A hearty welcome to Amsterdam, our capital and largest city and the financial and cultural centre of The Netherlands. Amsterdam has more then 10 million visitors a year and with reason! Amsterdam has so much to offer. There are the canals, full of character in every kind of weather. Amsterdam Fashion Week from 26 until 29 january (page 40) Keukenhof showcase in the space of eight weeks what the Dutch floricultural sector has to offer. The focus in the park is on the 7 million spring-flowering bulbs, in more than 20 flower shows, 500 flower growers present an enormous variety of cut flowers and pot

plants. Keukenhof opens from 23 march till 21 may 2017. In the city of Haarlem the centre of the tulip trade in the 17th century, you can take the Tulpominia Tour, the fascinating story of Tulipmania in the Golden Age. This tour takes you through the historical centre of Haarlem and the spring garden Keukenhof But also in the gardens of museums, private homes and city institutions in Amsterdam you will see a lot of Flowerbulbs blooming in March and April. For the Kids, you travel to the nearby town of Utrecht by train or car (30 minutes) to see: Harry Potter: The Exhibition in CineMec, Leidsche Rijn. Shopping; For Arts and Antiques you go to the Spiegelkwartier (page 30-36). P.C. Where to begin?

By Dorien ter veld. That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). See map on page 64-65. You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! 9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, bou tiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. \>>>

FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT (see page 20) There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes.

THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sightseeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do.

OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’.

LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums.

CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here.

THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life.

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. The Maverick Collection features a total of 42 different executions with each model offered in both 45mm and 48mm size. Each Maverick timepiece design comes in three versions. The first, a super-clean three-hand, comes with a Miyota 2417 movement and brushed case and bezel; the second, a chrono, is powered by a big calibre 6S21 movement and stands out with two chrono eyes and shiny case and bezel. Except for the PVD black coated executions, which come with a matt sandblasted finish. The third design, an equally impressive automatic, shares the same shiny case and bezel and houses a Seiko NH35 movement with an exclusive Geneva pattern rotor. If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area has been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. HISTORY Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighbourhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. ARTS & ANTIQUES (MINI MUSEUMS) In a cluster of historic houses, you can find a rich treasure-trove of art and antiques,mini-museums that invite you not only to admire, but give you the opportunity to buy. The shops and galleries of the Spiegelkwartier offer some of the finest art and antiques you’re likely to find anywhere in the world, from Roman glass to Dutch Old Masters, from Delftware to tribal art, contemporary sculpture to Art Deco jewellery, centuries-old furniture to a painting finished yesterday. The Spiegelkwartier has been at the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for more than a hundred years. Over 70 specialised dealers offer not only top-quality collections, but considerable expertise. And they gladly share there expertise with you. RIJKSMUSEUM According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware.

This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS TO SOUVENIRS The Art and Antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from medieval statues and antique clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. And you don’t have to break the plastic, also for little money you can buy an unique ‘souvenir’. Sonic Acts is a thematic festival with a focus on developments in art, music and science; this edition, titled The Noise of Being, explores what it means to be human. The festival includes a conference, performances, film programme, workshops, masterclasses and club nights at Paradiso, Stedelijk Museum, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Bimhuis, De Brakke Grond and OT301, with an exhibition running from 1 to 26 February at Arti et Amicitiae. Sonic Acts has also commissioned a series of new audiovisual works and sound installations.

Amsterdam, 29 September 2016 - Swiss artist Jean Tinguely (1925– 1991) is famous for his playful, boldly kinetic machines and explosive performances. Everything had to be different, everything had to move. Precisely twenty-five years after his death, the Stedelijk opens the largest Tinguely retro-spective to be mounted in a Dutch museum and the most comprehensive internationally in thirty years. With over a hundred machine sculptures, most of which are in working order, paired with films, photos, drawings, and archive materials, the presentation takes the public on a chronological and thematic journey of Tinguely’s artistic development and ideas.

The ‘Drive’ exhibition reveals 350 impressive pieces from the 100-year-old collection of The National Maritime Museum What do a life jacket from the Costa Concordia, a letter written by Michiel de Ruyter dating from 1657, Mesdag’s masterpiece from 1898, and a globe from 1613 have in common? The retrospective features 22 iconic photos of Parisians dating back to the 1950s from the photography collection of the famous French magazine Paris Match, including some shots from photographer Emanuele Scorcelletti. The contemporary aspect features 10 winning photos from the contest La Parisienne. The traveling photo exhibit La Parisienne by Sofitel embodies a key Sofitel pillar: culture. As an ambassador of French elegance around the world, Sofitel makes it a point of honor to celebrate its French heritage via numerous cultural events linked to literature, fashion and art.

The exhibition tells the story of Schiphol – all the way from a muddy field to a high-tech airport. On 19 September 1916, precisely one hundred years ago, an aeroplane first landed on a piece of farmland in the Haarlemmermeer. As well as looking back at the airport’s origins, the exhibition considers Schiphol’s future. Visit the exhibition and take a virtual ride on the luggage carousel, marvel at a specially built model of an air-traffic control tower, see the first ever key to Schiphol, look at a Second World War bomb, and view historical stewardess uniforms.

In her work, Solinas attempts to materialise abstract concepts such as identity or the spiritual in a systematic and factual manner. She employs photography as a part of a diverse array of research methods – alongside language, video and installation. The research process is central to her practice; by collaborating with experts from various disciplines Solinas investigates the shared role of the artist, the scientist and the medium as moderators of reality.

It shows how at the start of his career, Vincent van Gogh teaches himself to translate his view of the world into images. The emphasis in the exhibition is on drawings, which are rarely shown due to their sensitivity to light. The works in the exhibition are commented upon by Van Gogh himself with quotations from his letters. Writer Auke van der Woud is guest curator of the exhibition. In the exhibition texts and with the addition of photographs by Henri Berssenbrugge (1873-1959), he places Van Gogh’s unusual choice for his fellow man in the working-class districts in the context of the late nineteenth century.

In Made in Amsterdam, the company will be dancing new ballets by David Dawson, Ernst Meisner and Juanjo Arqués. The programme also includes five existing ballets created recently for Dutch National Ballet by the leading choreographers Hans van Manen, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, Ton Simons and Krzysztof Pastor. These five ballets are now counted among the highlights of the company’s repertoire. The story is about Jeannot and Jeannette, who are on their way to Paris. They earn their living with dance and song. Six puppeteers manipulate the large, wooden marionettes. Nestly on the former Zuiderzee, roughly 30 km north of Amsterdam, is the historic city of Hoorn. From Amsterdam, the city is easily accessible by car (theA-7 motorway) and train. Whether you arrive by car, train or even boat, the main square of the city, the Roode Steen, is only a distance of ten minutes. The square is dominated by the Westfries Museum and is the perfect starting point to explore the city and walk to the historic harbour. Its seems as if time has stood still.

WESTFRIES MUSEUM Hovering above the historic square lined with outdoor cafes is the imposing façade of the Westfries Museum. The building is constructed in 1632 and dates from the time that Hoorn was one of the largest and most prosperous cities of Holland. The building and its twenty-seven rooms are in their own right, worth a visit. But then there is also the magnificent collection of seventeenth century masters, which are the icing on the cake. And in the Marble-room the museum presents special expositions.

ORPHANS OF THE VOC From this autumn the unique exposition ‘Vêrlander Weeskinderen van de VOC (Orphans of the VOC)’ can be admired on four continents. The Westfries Museum in Hoorn is responsible for the European edition. From December 17 2016 until April 10 2017, 30 portraits by the Amsterdam photographer Geert Snoeijer can be seen in Hoorn.
