Masters of LXRY

an anniversary edition

Masters of LXRY celebrates the 15th anniversary of Europe’s biggest luxury fair The very first edition of Masters of LXRY took place in the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam in 2002. In the years that followed it would become Europe’s biggest luxury fair and an imposing and unique event. Today, fifteen years later, the event is still as impressive and prestigious as it was all those years ago. Masters of LXRY is the fair at which the greatest names in art, interior design, gastronomy, jewellery, watches, travel, boats and cars come together. The audience will be able to enjoy delicious food & drinks in many wonderful restaurants and bars, exceptional live entertainment on different stages, unique new releases & collections and art & fashion shows by top designers. All of this will be set against a backdrop of beautifully designed stands. For the first time ever, the modern Elicium Centre will provide a beautiful and stately entrance to the fair. The Masters of LXRY brand evolved as quality, craftsmanship and innovation became affordable for more and more people. Leading international brands choose this podium to present their newly released products to the public. Taking part in Masters of LXRY has become a benchmark for quality, real luxury and authenticity. The latest trends and developments in international art and (interior) design can be found at Masters of LXRY which will welcome more than 45,000 visitors over the course of five days. All of the biggest luxury car brands will showcase their most spectacular cars and the world’s greatest art galleries will be represented. Masters of LXRY is the only event at which Gassan will present Europe’s biggest watch collection. The different concepts or “worlds” into which the fair is divided make it incredibly varied. One of these concepts, which will be new to this year’s fair, is Classic Car Park, where you will find the most beautiful classic cars. Art Avenue, Masters of LXRY’s art concept, has become a place where quality and big names set the tone. You will find the latest innovations in the field of beauty and health at Beauty Boulevard. The most exclusive brands, unique limiteds and the absolute must-haves will be presented in the 640 square metre House of Limiteds. The Gallery will showcase exclusive projects in the fields of interior design, gadgets, fashion and lifestyle. Enterprising Masters will demonstrate what new luxury is at The Market. These companies are passionate about craftsmanship and quality. As the name implies, Fashion World is the most fashion conscious concept at Masters of LXRY whereas World of Travel & Leisure takes you to the most exclusive resorts, hotels, cruises, spas, helicopter ski trips, holiday villas and sporting events.

Exclusive new releases at Masters of LXRY Last year, Gassan built the biggest stand in Masters of LXRY’s history. This year, this phenomenal Dutch family firm has once again outdone itself by presenting the most beautiful brands of watches and jewellery on a stand measuring more than 1100 square metres. As usual, Gassan will release a large number of exciting new products. Masters of LXRY is the only event at which Gassan will present Europe’s biggest watch collection. It will feature unique timepieces by world-renowned makers such as Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre and OMEGA. Wanrooij Gallery will present a new collection of artworks by Mr Brainwash entitled ‘Amsterdam is Beautiful’. This will be the first time a series of artworks by this world famous artist will be on display in Amsterdam. There will be many more exclusive new releases at this year’s fair. Land Rover’s revolutionary new cars will once again feature prominently. Lexus will use Masters of LXRY to release their brand new Lexus LC 500h to the public. This is the first car in the world to be equipped with the state-of-the-art Multi Stage Hybrid drivetrain. And there is still more; the famous European artist Marco Mehn will put his art collection on display in Amsterdam. The new Porsche Panamera combines the power of a sports car with the comfort of a limousine and will have its first presentation to the general public during the fair Make sure you are part of Masters of LXRY 2016. As the name implies, the companies are the “Masters” and “LXRY” is their playing field as it has been for the last 15 years. JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

CITY OF AMSTERDAM Where to begin?

BY DORIEN TER VELD. That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s worldfamous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). SEE MAP ON PAGE 64-65. You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, boutiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT (see page 20) There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large

dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here. REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life. THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sight-seeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do. LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

Dutch Design

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Monique Collignon and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Edwin Oudshoorn, Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdam-based fashion houses. Dutch brands: G-Star RAW, Claudia Strater, Gaastra, Gsus Industries, Scotch & Soda and Supertrash. ■ CINQ - 11

The third design, an equally impressive automatic, shares the same shiny case and bezel and houses a Seiko NH35 movement with an exclusive Geneva pattern rotor. The PVD black-coated executions again come with a matt sandblasted finish. The stunning collection is set off by a choice of either a premium quality, exclusive vintage inspired leather strap with bold stitching detail, or equally impressive steel Milanese bracelet for which no tools are needed to shorten the bracelet. All leather strap models feature the popular and practical Capsa/ Quick Change Construction. The icing on the sport heritage cake for the Maverick Collection comes in the form of double-layered sandwich dials on all leather strap models, bringing the digits and indexes into sharp focus and giving head turning depth and feel to the brand new collection. “Just over ten years ago, we began our company by launching an iconic timepiece collection that shook up the market and established us as a bold new attitude in the watchmaking world,” states Jordy Cobelens, CEO and co-owner of TW Steel. “Now ten years on it’s only appropriate that we shake the market up again with the launch of a new design icon.” TW Steel Chief Design Officer and co-owner, Ton Cobelens adds: ”Of course our new designs still carry our trademark attitude and boldness, but take a new direction,

perfectly blending our TW Steel style with vintage appeal from the Sport Heritage world. We really enjoyed working with Roderick to bring the Son of Time to life, smashing two worlds together! There we found inspiration to make our Maverick Collection a reality, bringing TW Steel’s unique style and emotion to a new audience.”

This tradition continued in the 20th Century with Mondrian and later with the Cobra group abstract artists. Amsterdam art museums have not only unparalleled collection of the most famous, but also many lesser known amazing Dutch masters of all epochs. The State Museum called in Dutch Rijksmuseum, and a wonderful collection of modern art from Europe and America at The City Museum called in Dutch Stedelijk Museum are a must to visit. The principal collection of the world’s beloved painter at the Van Gogh Museum and a rich division of the Russian Hermitage Museum are also not to be missed, even if you are in the Dutch capital for a brief visit.

These specialists offer a wide range of objects, ranging from Egyptian antiquities which are 6,000 years old to seventeenth-century Delft ware, from antique Chinese porcelain to abstract modern art. You name it, it is for sale in the Spiegelkwartier. This makes the Spiegelkwartier a must-see quarter for those with an eye for the unique, rare and beautiful. ›

SPIEGELKWARTIER the art & antique district

If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area has been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. Over seventy specialised art and antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from medieval statues and antique clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. And you don’t have to break the plastic, also for little money you can buy an unique ‘souvenir’. Tucked in between these Aladdin’s caves are cafés and restaurants perfect for a little time out, whether you feel like a bowl of healthy soup, or coffee and cake; a light lunch or dinner with singing staff. You can pick up nifty vintage clothes at knock-down prices, or pre-loved designer wear. Then there are shoes and bags from famed Dutch designers and gifts aplently, from stylish Dutch contemporary object to toys for the kids back home. Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighbourhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on

30 - CINQ

that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware. This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. The first acquisition dates back to 1914 but the museum still buys from dealers in the Spiegelkwartier. A visit to the Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to one of many museums in the area. At walking distance you will find the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, FOAM and the Allard Pierson museum. A fun way to get to the Spiegelkwartier and the nearby Rijksmuseum, is with the CANAL-BUS. WWW.SPIEGELKWARTIER.NL

A diamond ring rotates around some 18krt golden rings when the hand moves and a necklace contains a hidden message written with pearls: just a few examples of her innovative designs. “People are surprised about new designs like this, but design never stops.” In her gallery in Amsterdam’s Spiegelkwartier, Van der Laag exhibits and sells not only MOYA designs, but also custom jewellery designs and the works of other talented international craftsmen and -women. Her pieces are sheer craftsmanship and are pure pleasure for the eye. Her gallery is the place where you’ll find the one-of-a-kind-piece you’ve been looking for.

High-end fashion designers including Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel were often spotted wearing costume jewellery. Chanel reasoned that “to ask a woman to wear real jewellery only is like asking her to cover herself with real flowers instead of floral silk prints. She’d look faded in a few hours.” Aside from costume jewellery, the Droomfabriek has an eclectic mix of antiques, objets trouvés, vintage handbags (Chanel, Gucci, Judith Leiber), Hermès scarfs and ties. Françoise NIELLY, born and raised in France, has reached international success with her expressive paintings that exhibit a brute force, a fascinating vital energy. Oil and knife combine to sculpt her images from a material that is, at the same time, biting and incisive, carnal and sensual. Whether she paints the human body or portraits, the artist takes a risk: her painting is sexual, her colors free, exuberant, surprising, even explosive, the cut of her knife incisive, her colour pallet dazzling.

The award winning British photographer Nick VEASEY creates astonishing X-ray photos of all kinds of objects. He uses an industrial X-ray machine to capture multiple exposures of each object, and digitally combines the exposures to create the final image. His subjects range from small objects like teddy bears to sports cars and even airplanes. Nick Veasy´s art reveals everything from the inside out, allowing us to appreciate the real beauty of things and what they are made of truly. FROM 15 OCTOBER Five nationally known chefs accepted the challenge the Dutch Resistance Museum gave them: create a dish with ingredients that were available during the occupation years. Starring Pierre Wind, Bobby Rust, Angélique Schmeinck, Edwin Florès and Julius Jaspers. What did they come up with, and what did we eat during those five years of occupation? Was it more unhealthy, or was it not that bad? The new exhibition Food in wartime offers a new and surprising perspective on this period. In addition, also other aspects around food and eating during the Second World War are covered in the exhibition, told through personal stories.

20 UNTIL 27 NOVEMBER The fair of today for art, antiques and design. Every year more than 45,000 art lovers are inspired and tempted by the many thousands of works of art. TILL 7 DECEMBER AKINCI is proud to announce the first museum solo exhibition at FOAM of Melanie Bonajo, who holds a unique position in contemporary art. She has become an unconventional artist working in different disciplines including photography, video, installations, publications, performance and music. An interesting feature is her anarchist approach and her dynamic ability to constantly escape social conventions. Melanie Bonajo portrays this in an enthused, graceful and sometimes absurdist way and is not afraid to include herself. Foam premieres the third and final part of the trilogy, Nocturnal Gardening. The videos are presented in an installation in which the visitor is submerged.

TILL 15 NOVEMBER Reflex Gallery is delighted to announce a major exhibition of the work of Donald Baechler this September. This will be the first extensive exhibition in the Netherlands for the worldfamous American artist. One of the few continuously active members of the 1980s New York art scene, Baechler is an internationally acclaimed artist with a remarkable pedigree. In addition to his paintings, Baechler is known also for his large-scale sculptural work. His famous 30ft aluminium “Walking Figure”, situated in Westhampton, NY, is a dynamic cartoon-like strolling woman, caught as if in a freeze-frame, energising her surroundings.

1 OCTOBER - FEBRUARY 5 In the year that she would have turned 90, De Nieuwe Kerk will reflect on a great style icon: Marilyn Monroe. From October 1 until February 5 2017, the exhibition about her life and legacy, including numerous personal items from her house at 5th Helena Drive in Brentwood, California, can be visited.

TILL 8 OCTOBER, 2016 AKINCI will open the season with Counterpoint, an exhibtion in which the transformation of fact, alternative histories, and subjectivity are apparent themes. Roger Cremers (NL) steps up as the curator of his own show, presenting carefully selected work by befriended artists Mark Aerial Waller (UK) and Runa Islam (BD/UK) next to his new series of paintings. Though very different in approach, the artists share a deep interest in challenging the course of chronology through visual language, historic research, and scientific fact, which all three of them use as the main material for their work. In effect, the conjunction of their voices hit a striking conceptual counterpoint.

TILL 1 JANUARY 2017 The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam kicks off the cultural season by opening a large-scale presentation of contemporary design with 26 participants active in the field of ‘social design’. These designers dream aloud about a better world and are committed to finding answers to today’s problems. They experiment with new technologies, seek solutions for humanitarian or ecological disasters, use fiction to make the inconceivable conceivable, or challenge our consumer culture with designs that can be repaired or upcycled.

FROM 24 - 27 NOVEMBER Our capital will be the centre of the international art world. This year, the fifth edition of this unique event will take place - with more participants than ever before. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the best of what the art world has to offer. For art lovers, the Amsterdam Art Weekend is a genuine 360° experience, from early in the morning until late at night. In addition to numerous exhibitions, this year’s edition will feature lectures, film showings, artist talks, performances, gallery tours, thematic routes and informal gatherings.

This biographical exhibition opens up Marilyn’s world; the successful and glamorous external appearance as well as her often lonely inner world, full of setbacks, as well as her witty, creative and progressive personality.

8 TILL 15 OCTOBER 5 TILL 13 NOVEMBER Dutch National Ballet is dancing La Bayadère in the highly acclaimed version first created for the prestigious American Ballet Theatre by former Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova, based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa, from 1877. Although the Mariinsky Ballet (then still the Kirov Ballet) danced the famous second act of La Bayadère in London and Paris in 1961, Makarova was the first to introduce the complete ballet to the West in 1980. Since then, there have been several interpretations by other choreographers, but Makarova’s production is still regarded internationally as the most beautiful and poetic La Bayadère.

10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 AND 31 OCTOBER Hope and illusion of a tragic heroine. This new production of Manon Lescaut shifts the emphasis. Manon herself, sung by Eva Maria Westbroek, looks back on her life, instead of Manon’s lover.

The First: Roméo et Juliette by William Shakespeare In Verona, an old rivalry opposes the Capulet and Montaigu families. When Romeo Montaigu and Juliet Capulet fall for each other, they know their love is meant to be eternal. However they already sense its tragic ending…

38 - CINQ

IN SHORT Manon does not fit in the prudish society that surrounds her. She comes to grief through the conflict between her feelings for the poor student Des Grieux and her desire to climb the social ladder. Puccini said, ‘I love those souls who feel like we do, who are composed of hope and illusion, and who are laughing with joy one minute and weeping with despair the next’.

8, 9, 10 DECEMBER Spiritwalking (2014) is an exceptional and exclusive evening entirely devoted to the work of house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. This site-specific choreography will be performed on the Westergasfabriek terrain in Amsterdam and is shown in a newly developed version. Spiritwalking takes the audience out of the traditional theatre space and into the gashouder, a former gasworks in Amsterdam. The ballet is accompanied by music that was especially composed for this piece by Philip Glass, which will be performed live by the Ragazze Kwartet.

10 - 12 OCTOBER To kick off the new season, Stage One gives the NDT audience an insight into the more risk-taking choreographers in the field today. It presents two world premieres and Thin Skin by NDT’s associate choreographer Marco Goecke, which was labelled “Original, dynamic and stunningly his own” by newspaper de Volkskrant when it premiered in 2015. Ranging from the feverishly quick and pulsating movements of Thin Skin to the haunting dreamscapes of Medhi Walerksi and the compelling club-scene inspired works by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, Stage One offers an evening full of surprising and innovative choreography and dance. Here, NDT proves once again that the company stands for creativity at SEPT. the highest level.

FROM 9 OCT. 29 DEC The Castle in the Air (‘Le 66!’) short comical opera by Jacques Offenbach (no language barrier) Jacques Offenbach wrote ‘No. 66!’ (The castle in the air) in 1856 for his own small theatre, a wooden auction hall at the ChampsElysées in Paris. Now, this unknown opéracomique can be seen in a former blacksmith’s - the theatre of the Amsterdam Marionette Theatre.

10 AND 11 NOVEMBER This NDT 2 programme offers a tryptic of ballets that is inspired by Bosch’s art and extensive use of symbolism. Giving a creative opportunity to a young new voice, chorographer Ji í Pokorný is invited to create a piece for the second company. In his young career, Pokorný has already become known for creating elaborate dream worlds. The programme will also show Some Other Time (2014) by house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot with black decor pieces seemingly floating across the stage. Out of Breath (2002) by guest choreographer Johan Inger concludes the evening with a strong symbolic piece centered around a curved white wall as a fortress arising from the ground.

Royal Theatre Carré Amstel 115-125 Booking: www.carre.nl 0900 - 25 25 255 (€0.45 p/m)

A performance for both adults and children (min. 6 yrs.) of approx. 1 1/2 uur (a short interval included). The performance will be performed in Dutch, but because of the musical and visual character of the performance, there is no serious barrier of language.

1 AND 2 DECEMBER The program consists of three works by American choreographers: Pond Way by Merce Cunningham, Approximate Sonata by William Forsythe and Shahrazad by Jonah Bokaer. Last season, the Ballet of Flanders of artistic director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and his assistant, Tamas Moricz, performed in the Royal Theatre Carré for the first time, with the successful program Van Manen/Cherkaoui. In December, the lead company returns with the triptych West, which shows the work of two great names in the dance world, Merce Cunningham and William Forsythe, and the rising talent Jonah Bokaer. Three American choreographers, each with their own vision, identity and unique language of movement. CINQ - 39

RESTAURANTS | CAFÉS As one might expect from a cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam not only offers the possibility of enjoying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restaurants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours.

JORDAAN The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. REMBRANDTPLEIN Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior. UTRECHTSESTRAAT AREA This narrow street has a special atmosphere and is known for its gift shops and international restaurants. Before dining, you can unwind with a drink on a terrace on Rembrandtplein. REGULIERSDWARSSTRAAT As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. LEIDSEPLEIN Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here.

DINNER | CLUBS Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to groove. In Amsterdam you can party all night long, nearly every night of the week! Have a look at the listings below - whether you’re into techno, drum & bass, top 40, hip-hop or anything in between, you’ll find a club to match your mood. ■

Located in four 17th century buildings within the historic NH Barbizon Palace, Restaurant Vermeer is bursting with history and character.

The two Michelin star restaurant is seated on the first floor. Moshik translates his emotions and inspiration, gained at his journeys around the world, into culinary creations. Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.

“Using the magic of food to transform lives” At Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen we train our apprentices to become the professional chefs of the future. Come by for an amazing dinner.

Restaurant Vermeer offers a superb dining experience that has ensured the elite of the Dutch capital return again and again. Head Chef Christopher Naylor has created a menu that has delighted critics and led to the restaurant being awarded a Michelin star. Stylish and graceful, the restaurant would have appealed to its namesake, Johannes Vermeer, who, much like the restaurant, was well known for his skill and precision in his craft.

At &samhoud places you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’.

Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen is established in an old warehouse with great atmosphere. In 2015 we celebrate our tenth anniversary. You will find 15 motivated apprentices in our kitchen who get the chance to change their life forever. On our menu you will find local, sustainably produced ingredients of the highest quality.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ESSENTIAL INFORMATION AND USEFUL TIPS Amsterdam has so much to offer. There are the canals, full of character in every kind of weather. You can take a canal cruise boat and view the seventeenth century houses from the water, or just take a walk. Then there are the museums. Amsterdam is the place to be for Rembrandts, Van Goghs and modern art. The theatres present shows mainly in Dutch off course, but opera and ballet are universal languages. The Spiegelkwartier and P.C. Hooftstraat are rich shopping grounds for fashion, jewellery and antiques. When it comes to food and drink, Amsterdam offers the wide range you would expect of a big city: from little fast food stalls to Michelin-star gourmet restaurants and bars and nightclubs in all sorts and sizes. Whatever your liking, Amsterdam is an exciting city for everyone. We give you some handy facts, figures and customs to make you enjoy your stay even more. LANGUAGE Just about everyone speaks English in Amsterdam. Many people speak German and French too but not as well. A common misconception is that Dutch is similar to German. In truth they are not: Dutch people have to learn German at school, and they generally speak better English than German. The German and Dutch languages are similar in the way that French and Italian are. WEATHER Typically, Dutch weather ranges from slight freezing in the dead of winter, usually with little snow, to pleasantly sunny days of 20 to 30ºC in the summer. Spring and autumn are pleasant. TIME Amsterdam time is one hour ahead of GMT; when daylight saving time is in operation the sun is at its highest point at around 1.40pm (which makes for long evenings: since Amsterdam is very far West in its time zone, a midsummer sky can be light as late as 11 o’clock in the evening). Amsterdam is a late city: many shops don’t open until 10am and bars and cafés stay open till 2am and some even longer.

ELECTRICITY The electricity voltage in the Netherlands was 220 volts, and then moved up at a rate of 1 volt per year to the European standard of 230 volts. TELEPHONING When dialling from abroad, prefix any number you find in this site with +31 (for Holland) and the area code (Except the 0). For example, if you find a number (020) 123 45 67, from abroad you dial 0 20 123 45 67. MONEY There are several different outlets where you can change money in Amsterdam. The best rates are usually offered by the Various GWK offices. Changing money at your hotel is normally more expensive. CREDIT CARDS Credit cards are not as widely accepted here as in many other countries yet, but the situation is improving steadily. Always inquire first if you intend to pay by credit card. You can use Cirrus and Maestro cards to withdraw cash from cash dispensers.

Fredy Knie Jr. presents his magical horse carousel with 25 horses, which was awarded the Golden Clown at the Monte Carlo Circus Festival

32st World Christmas Circus Carré THE GREATEST PROGRAMME EVER! From december 22th till january 8th. Nowhere is circus better than in Carré. The Greatest Programme ever, with world records from the world’s top artistes. The 32nd World Christmas Circus, which the Royal Theater Carré is hosting from 22 December to 8 January 2017, is raising the bar this year in terms of the number of artistes. For the first time in 32 years, 120 people will be involved in this mega production, justifying the slogan “The greatest programme ever”. This year, the World Christmas Circus, one of the best according to circus lovers, presents another world record show with acts performing their record stunts in the ring. The programme is also proudly celebrating the return, the seventieth birthday and the 65th anniversary of circus icon FREDY KNIE JR., director-owner of the Swiss National Circus Knie. Fredy’s motto in life is: ‘A day without horses is a lost day’, and now he is making his Acomeback with one of the “crown jewels” of international circus history: his magical horse carousel with 25 horses in the ring at the same time. In Monte Carlo, this act was rightly awarded the Golden Clown, the Oscar of the circus world. But more gold is glittering in and above the ring! With 26 artistes, the Great Chinese State Circus from Beijing presents its two best Golden Clown winners: the beautiful Diabolo girls in a ballet style presentation and a brand new hoop number featuring a world record jump of three metres high. The National Circus of Pyongyang (North Korea) also has a world record act: a Russian swing with flying artistes whose twenty 66 - CINQ

metre jump is the longest in circus history. This act was also awarded Gold in Monte Carlo, but the current jump breaks the former record of 18 metres by another 2 metres!! Nearly all the acts have received awards at the international circus festivals in Moscow, Monte Carlo, Paris, Wuqiao and Sochi. In Sochi in 2015, for example, the Russian swing act by Alexander Skokov was voted the very best act in the world during the Master Awards, a sort of Oscars for the top acts. The Skokov group is the only Russian Swing act which is only performed by young women. The same applies to the Pas de Deux on horseback performed by the young and very talented circus couple of today, Joszef Richter and Merrylu Casselli, who met in the ring and got married earlier this year. Their Pas de Deux on two horses is an ode to classic circus. Another award went to the sensual tango in the air by the beautiful Ambra and her husband Yves. Their act is a true dance of love above the ring. Other prize winners are the clown Rob Torres who, after a season with Circus Knie, is now making his debut in Carré, giving his own style and interpretation to classic reprises. So this 32nd World Christmas Circus not only offers a record number of artistes, but also a programme in which classic circus joins the new style circus in that magical and now Golden Carré circle, called the ring!
