SAIL
Amsterdam 2015 THE LARGEST SAIL EVER
The nautical event SAIL Amsterdam 2015 promises to be the most impressive edition so far, with a record number of Tall Ships – 50 – including 13 first-timers and a 12-kilometer long SAIL In Parade. SAIL Amsterdam 2015 has charted a new course with a substantial expansion of the event grounds, now divided up into thematic ‘oceans’. A new element is the SAIL Music Marina with a stage on the northern bank of the River IJ. The concept and programming are also more focused on appealing to a younger public. A national debate will be held on the SAIL theme ‘From the Golden Age to a Golden Future’. Lots of inspiring activities will be organised for families and for children. The exclusive SAIL Village is the point of departure for thousands of hospitality arrangements. It goes without saying that the programme again includes traditional and popular ceremonies and activities such as the Saluut Protocollair, the Fleet Review, skûtsjesilen (traditional Frisian sailing) on the IJ River, breathtaking firework displays and the Crew Parade.
First-ever Tall Ships to attend During this ninth edition of SAIL Amsterdam, numerous Tall Ships will be calling on the capital city for the first time. For instance, the Young Endeavour is sailing into port all the way from Australia. The coming of this magnificent vessel is a unique event for SAIL Amsterdam and for the Netherlands. From Spain, we welcome a replica of the legendary Nao Victoria: the original 16th-century ship was the first Tall Ship to successfully circumnavigate the globe, between 1519 and 1522. La Grace is a charming replica from the Czech Republic, and will also be calling in to Amsterdam for the first time. Another first-ever is the coming of Guayas from Ecuador. This ship, too, was coveted by many previous SAIL editions and will now be putting in its first appearance. The Half Moon recently arrived in the Netherlands from the United States and will also be on show. Another newcomer to SAIL Amsterdam is the Chilean vessel Esmeralda. Tall Ships popular with the public, such as the Kruzenshtern, the Christian Radich and the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, will again be part of the event.
nautically relevant historical sites and museums. Between the Orange and Red Oceans we have the business-oriented Blue Ocean, with the National Maritime Museum as one of the main meeting spots for the corporate world during SAIL. The creative and innovative Green Ocean is located on the northern bank of the River IJ, at the NDSM wharf, as is the White Ocean with its very diverse programme that will appeal especially to the younger crowd.” SAIL Amsterdam 2015 takes place from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 August. SAIL was first held in 1975 and has since then grown into the largest free event in the Netherlands. SAIL Amsterdam 2015 is organised by Stichting SAIL Amsterdam (SSA) and SAIL Event Partners (SEP). More information is available at www.sail. nl, via Facebook (facebook.com/sail.nl), Twitter (@sailamsterdam, #SAIL2015) or Instagram (sailamsterdam2015, #SAIL2015). ■
Five ‘Oceans’ with separate themes SAIL Amsterdam 2015 will not just take place around the IJhaven (temporarily renamed as Oranjehaven). More than in previous editions, the rest of Amsterdam will also be involved in the activities. To this end, SAIL has set up five different ‘Oceans’, each with its own colour and theme. “Oranjehaven with the Tall Ships and the main stages, including the new SAIL Music Marina, will be part of the Orange Ocean. The city centre is designated as the cultural Red Ocean, where various tours will be offered of Photo: Nico Koster

City of Amsterdam WHERE TO BEGIN?
BY DORIEN TER VELD. That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s worldfamous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). SEE MAP ON PAGE 64-65. You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)
JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot! 9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, bou tiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT (see page 20) There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes. OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you
will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here. REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life. THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sight-seeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do. LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

DORHOUT MEES
WWW.DORHOUT-MEES.COM Dorhout Mees is distinctive in its elegant style. It is feminine and conceptual, but wearability is always an important element. Organic forms contrasted sharp next to constructual forms. The base of all collections are prints, silk, wool and delicate knits. Combined with the use of wearable unconventional materials. Fasinaction of the constant connection between body and material, covering and uncovering of the female body is always the starting point. Contradictions in structures, silhouette and textures are the essence of the collections.
CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL 10 - CINQ
Dutch Design In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Sheila de Vries and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdam-based fashion houses. Dutch brands: G-Star RAW, Claudia Strater, Gaastra, Gsus Industries, Scotch & Soda and Supertrash. ■

CODA Museum puts on grand display - CODA Paper Art 2015 Paper and cardboard are relatively simple and fairly cheap materials that, combined with traditional and modern techniques and the artist’s inspiration, show their endless possibilities and expressive power in staggering and dynamic but sometimes also moving and subtle ways. After a highly successful edition in 2013, CODA Museum Apeldoorn presents CODA Paper Art 2015, an exhibition that provides ample space – both literally and figuratively – for the installations, spatial works and specially selected jewellery of 36 artists from the Netherlands and abroad whose work is centred around paper and cardboard. Poster Paper Art 2015 The mysterious tree-patterned mask Behind the Gates by American artist Phillip Valdez does not only grace the poster of this edition of Paper Art, but is also part of this exhibition, along with a number of other masks representing death. Valdez has also made a new mask for CODA Paper Art 2015.

An exhibition devoted to Rembrandt’s extraordinary choice for paper from Japan. It has long been known that Rembrandt made prints on this kind of paper, but it remained unclear from which region it originated. Recently researchers in Japan and in The Netherlands (Rijksmuseum) have started research on whether the paper originated from Japan and more particularly from the region of Echizen, located in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Rembrandt was even a pioneer in the use of such valuable and exotic papers, starting around 1647. The only etched portrait of his son Titus was exclusively printed on Japanese paper. Dramatic comparisons with prints on western paper will reveal the effect of Rembrandt’s striking choice..

TILL NOVEMBER 8 2015 A story in four scenes Our story begins in 1807. Napoleon and Joséphine were seeing very little of each other, because of the many wars that Napoleon was waging across the European continent. Joséphine was on her own in their love nest, Château de Malmaison, just outside Paris. That year, Napoleon and the tsar concluded the Treaty of Tilsit, establishing a coalition for peace intended to change the political constellation in Europe and Asia. In the process, they formed a friendship that seemed genuine and enduring. After fifteen days, they said farewell, and in the years that followed they exchanged many diplomatic gifts.
On 29 July 2015 it will be exactly 125 years since Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) died. In the Van Gogh Year the Kröller-Müller Museum presents the exhibition Van Gogh & Co. Criss-crossing the collection. Still lifes, nature themes, cityscapes and the human figure by Vincent van Gogh are compared to works by his contemporaries in the same genres. More than fifty paintings and drawings by Van Gogh will be shown, along with an equal number of works by other artists, such as François Bonvin, Jan Toorop, Henri Fantin-Latour, Jean-BaptisteCamille Corot, Paul Cézanne, Adolphe Monticelli and Bart van der Leck. Summer presentation For the Van Gogh & Co exhibition, the works of Vincent van Gogh have temporarily vacated their usual spot in the Van Gogh Gallery. This has created room for a special Summer presentation, which places extra emphasis on cubism, futurism, De Stijl and constructivism.
Vincent and Helene The Kröller-Müller is Vincent van Gogh’s second home. With nearly 90 paintings and over 180 drawings, the museum boasts the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. The museum is the life work of Helene Kröller-Müller. She acquired almost 11,500 works of art between 1907 and 1922. Helene first discovered his work in the summer of 1905 when she began taking lessons in art history from the art historian H.P. Bremmer. She became completely fascinated by art and began collecting. Van Gogh was her personal favourite and his works formed the core of her collection from the outset. An extraordinary combination: art, architecture and nature A visit to the museum is an experience in itself. Visitors are free to walk around or borrow one of the white bicycles to discover the natural beauty of the Netherlands’ most breath-taking treasure trove. The Museum has one of the largest sculpture gardens in Europe. An outdoor gallery 25 hectares in which modern sculpture finds a natural setting. The garden is open all year round. The combination of the art collection, glorious sculpture garden and the beautiful landscapes is totally unique.p.

Almost six years later more than a million visitors in over twenty-three countries have seen the show. An adrenaline rush with a twist of West Side Story-like ‘boy meets girl’ street romance. Breath taking, beautiful and simply poetic. It’s an extraordinary experience to see iD in Carré. joying classical French cuisine, but since a few decades the city has also abounded in - sometimes surprisingly good - Greek, Italian, Moroccan, Turkish, Chinese, Korean and even Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants. This fact has caused the extensive, daily public market in Albert Cuypstraat to adapt its range to the purchasing requirements of these restau rants. For a quick cheap lunchtime bite try the sandwich shops, the chips stands or herring stalls. Eating maatjes (‘mates’) herring is quite possibly the only important culinary tradition of our otherwise in this respect poorly endowed country. Amsterdam is also a city with many bars and cafés, some 1,500 in all. Each of the areas mentioned below has something to offer, from friendly and relaxed brown cafés, stylish grand cafés to crowded designer bars. The cafés and bars vary greatly and have their own special attraction: a wide range of beers, jenever (Dutch gin), live music, canal-side terraces, board games, pool tables or just good old fun. Jordaan The most easy-going area of the city hosts a great number of outstanding restaurants and bars, from classical French cuisine, Thai food to Tapas bars. Something can be found to everyone’s taste. Rembrandtplein Observed by the cast-iron statue of Amsterdam’s most famous painter lies Rembrandtplein. This place is bustling with places to eat and drink. Some of the most beautiful grand cafés are located here, like Schiller withits marvellous art deco interior.
Reguliersdwarsstraat As far as gay nightlife is concerned, without a doubt, the Reguliersdwarsstraat is the hippest street in town. However, some of the best restaurants are located here. Leidseplein Leidseplein is Amsterdam’s centre of entertainment, with its many bars, nightclubs, theatres, music halls and hotels. Of course there are many different types of restaurants here. BARS | LIVE MUSIC Amsterdam has some great small bars where you enter for free and or a small fee to listen to live music. Singer-songwriters, jazz, pop, folk or even classical music. You just have to know where to go. COCKTAILS | DINNER The Venice of the North, Amsterdam’s attractions are considerable. Besides the famed red-light areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to hundreds of great bars and clubs: style bars, cocktail bars, bistros, restaurants and casinos, and the famous brown cafes where you can linger long over a beer and watch the people of Amsterdam go about their business. Once you’ve visited the museum quarter and taken a tour of the canals, you can hit the town. A night out in the many bars of Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein should see you into the small hours. Located in four 17th century buildings within the historic NH Barbizon Palace, Restaurant Vermeer is bursting with history and character.
The only two-starred Michelin restaurant in Amsterdam, Ciel Bleu mixes stunning views with delicious dishes to create one of Amsterdam’s finest eateries.
The two Michelin star restaurant is seated on the first floor. Moshik translates his emotions and inspiration, gained at his journeys around the world, into culinary creations. Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.
Restaurant Vermeer offers a superb dining experience that has ensured the elite of the Dutch capital return again and again. Head Chef Christopher Naylor has created a menu that has delighted critics and led to the restaurant being awarded a Michelin star. Stylish and graceful, the restaurant would have appealed to its namesake, Johannes Vermeer, who, much like the restaurant, was well known for his skill and precision in his craft.
Located on the 23rd floor of the delightful Hotel Okura, the restaurant offers sumptuous fare among elegant surroundings. Chefs Onno Kokmeijer and Arjan Speelman use fresh, locally produced ingredients to create gastronomic masterpieces. Combined with impeccable service, the food on offer is likely to be one of the highlights of your holiday, but remember to book ahead; the restaurant’s popularity means that reservations need to be made well in advance
Indeed, the interior design still has touches of the restaurant’s former life, including the original ovens. Head Chef Dennis Kuipers has created a delightful menu of delicate French cuisine that flirts between classic and contemporary. Many of the city’s elite head to Vinkeles to enjoy the fabulous views over the Keizersgracht, while sampling the fine food on offer.
At &samhoud places you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’. CINQ - 51

Bridges, INSPIRED BY RON BLAUW
BRIDGES WAS HERALDED AS ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN THE NETHERLANDS. The legendary location, which served as the canteen of the former Town Hall, is now a place where gourmands can savor the culinary skills of Chef de Cuisine Bobby Rust. The style can best be described as a bridge between Dutch and French culinary traditions: fresh fish from Holland, prepared with a French twist. In Bridges, guests can savor the delights of the Restaurant, the Raw Bar, Le Petit Bistro, the Vinothèque and the completely restyled inner garden. Needless to say, the restaurant also caters for vegetarians and people who fancy meat from local Dutch produce. It is a perennial favorite among Amsterdam residents, international (hotel) guests, politicians, business executives and celebrities. Since 2013, Bridges and Michelinstarred chef Ron Blaauw enjoy a unique culinary collaboration. Using innovative international infl uences, Blaauw intends to raise the restaurant to an even higher level in a contemporary manner. The interior design is inspired by the colors and shapes of the original mural, created by the Dutch artist Karel Appel, which graces the entrance and is delightfully open, comfortable and accessible. Service is an integral part of the experience. The sommelier tastes, selects and serves ranges of wine and vintage champagnes he himself has selected in the Vinothèque. The wines and champagnes are stored in a phenomenal wine cellar, which is lovingly and meticulously maintained. Most wines can be ordered per glass. More French infl uences can be found in the grandiose selection of cheese and the opportunity to wine and dine in complete privacy in the Private Dining, which provides pleasant views of the Vinothèque and the historic canal. ■ BRIDGES RESTAURANT Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197, 1012 EX Amsterdam +31 (0) 20 555 3560 info@bridgesrestaurant.nl www.bridgesrestaurant.nl
