CITY OF AMSTERDAM Where to begin?

By Dorien ter veld. That’s a good question! Amsterdam has so much to offer that it is impossible to see everything in a week, let alone in a weekend. To make things a little easier for you we have divided the city into nine easy-reference areas for you. In the one area you will mainly find the authentic Amsterdam with its real brown pubs (the Jordaan), in the next area you will find the most important art collections of the Netherlands Museum Quarter, large shops or on the contrary unusual specialist shops Centre, Nine Streets or nature combined with history (the Plantage). For those who want to go out, Amsterdam (Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein) is the place to be. Also modern architecture buffs can indulge themselves here (Eastern Docklands) and those who also want to see Amsterdam’s world-famous and typical side, now’s your chance (Red light district). See map on page 64-65.

OLD TOWN Anyone who has been in Amsterdam, will get inevitable questions about the Red Light district. In the Netherlands prostitution is legal. A tour through the Red Light district will certainly be an interesting experience. It can be combined well with a visit to and a good meal in adjacent ‘China Town’. CITY CENTRE A five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, you will get to Dam Square. Here you will find the Palace and the National Monument. The large dove population and street artists also attract the attention. From Dam Square you walk straight into the Walhalla for shopping fanatics. The major store chains are all represented here.

You could easily spend a day in each area, but luckily combining the areas is also easy. The areas link up well, public transport will take you everywhere. Should you be at a loss: Amsterdammers are helpful and practically everyone speaks English. Welkom en veel plezier! (Welcome and enjoy!)

REMBRANDTPLEIN Eating, drinking and dancing you do around Rembrandtplein. All year around this is the place to be for dazzling nightlife and in summer the outdoor cafés are crowded. There’s also enough to see and do in the area for people who enjoy the good life.

JORDAAN Enjoying authentic Amsterdam in a relaxed way that is what you do in the Jordaan. Inthe past labourers and craftsmen used to live in the crisscross of little streets. Now you get pleasantly lost among the local shops, antiquarian bookshops, galleries and (brown) pubs. This charming working class area is hot!

THE PLANTAGE You don’t feel a lot of enthusiasm for the still life works in the Museum Quarter and you don’t feel like shopping or sightseeing? With its 19th century architecture the Plantage is a greenand quiet part of Amsterdam where there is plenty to do.

9 STRAATJES Not far behind Dam Square, between the well-known ring of canals, you will find nine small streets full of small specialist shops, bou tiques and galleries. The three times three streets are situated neatly side to side and together they are a kilometre long, but make no mistake! You can easily lose yourself here for a day. FASHION & MUSEUM DISTRICT There are a number of things you cannot get round in Amsterdam. Culture enthusiasts cannot go home before they have admired a number of masterpieces in Holland’s most important museums with their own eyes.

LEIDSEPLEIN Amsterdam’s most famous, largest and most touristic entertainment area. There are countless restaurants with affordable day specials and outdoor cafés that even have heating when the weather is somewhat cold. Leidseplein is also the epicentre of all kinds of well-known theatres and concert podiums. THE DOCKLANDS In the past fifty years Amsterdam’s harbour activities have moved to the west of the city. As a result space to live opened up along the IJ lake. The architecture is striking and interesting, it is the architecture of Amsterdam in the future. ■

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF

Worldchristmascircus The 33rd Worldchristmascircus promises, as always, to be the family feast of the year with a line-up full excitement, beauty and sensation. The absolute cream of the crop of the circus world will be united at Royal Theatre Carré from December 21st until January 7th !

8 - CINQ

Clowns are an integral part of the fabric of the Worldchristmascircus. Throughout the years many ‘classic’ clowns made their way to Amsterdam, but in this 33rd year Europe’s most famous winter circus is proud to present a modern clown who has translated the classic tradition of clowning to the 21st century. Houschma-Housch doesn’t just bring contemporary humour to the circus, he amazes audiences with amazing interactions and beatbox breakdowns!

Besides innovating the ‘Wereldkerstcircus’ (as it is known in Dutch) is also a safe haven for rich circus traditions. It doesn’t surprise anyone then that the circus itself has become a tradition. Last year one of the ushers, who usually are students, told us “I’m 22 now but I saw my first Worldchristmascircus here in Carré when I was just 4 years old. My grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts all came to see the show and I will never forget the warm feeling I had that night! Wereldkerstcircus

From December 21st until January 7th at Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam. has become a yearly tradition that brings our family together. No matter where they live on the globe, we always make sure that we’re together for this special night. This year we’re coming again, of course with the whole family, 12 people!”

easily be described as circus royalty, Golden Clown winner Freddy Knie shines in this year’s show together with his stunning horses.

Canada Crossed Wheel or laughs at an unexpected joke, Worldchristmascircus proves more than ever that circus touches people from all walks of life.

It warms our heart to say that this isn’t just a single story. The Worldchristmascricus has become a place where the oldest live entertainment in the world brings people from all over the world together!

Another secret of the Worldchristmascircus is the inclusion of large troupes in the line-up, something that usually isn’t possible in a travelling show. This year 20 acrobats from China will pay homage to Tsjaikovsky’s immortal classic Swan Lake in a never before seen spectacle.

130 years after circus legend Oscar Carré staged his first show in the theatre Carré the 33rd edition of Worldchristmascricus will be an amazing combination of hair-raising stunts, breathtaking beauty and unforgettable laughs. So, ladies and gentlemen: Clear the arena, let the orchestra play and let the show begin!

Most circus artists come from circus families where knowledge is passed on from one generation to the next. One of our acts comes from a family that can

Besides impeccable presentation, emotion is at the core of Worldchristmascircus. Whether the audience witnesses acrobatic swans, a spectacular aerial act from

Dutch Design

CREATED ON DUTCH SOIL In the twentieth century, Dutch design has evolved. Besides, for instance, architecture and modern dance, design has become another area where the Netherlands excels internationally. As a result, current Dutch graphic design, fashion design, product design, interior design and furniture design are in the spotlight. From the lingerie of Marlies Dekkers, to the costumes of the Harry Potter movies and the interior pieces of Marcel Wanders; they have all been created on Dutch soil. TYPICAL DUTCH DESIGN Dutch design is characterised by simplicity and clarity. It is often described using terms such as down-to-earthness, sense of humour and perspective and surprising, smart design. These characteristics are the result of creativity in an open, tolerant society. Functionalism has long been the leading ideology behind Dutch design and worked well with the Calvinist attitude of the Dutch. At the start of the twentieth century, the Netherlands became famous by the works of the members of ‘De Stijl’ artistic movement, with artists such as Mondrian and Rietveld. In the nineties, a new artistic trend developed. Functionality of the product no longer came first; the concept behind the design took centre stage. Design became less of an artisanal and more of an artistic discipline. As part of this international trend, the emphasis shifted more towards artistic aspects such as concept and originality and away from production and user requirements. In the process, designers such as Tord Boontje and Viktor & Rolf shift with ease between commercial and artistic considerations. In this sense, Dutch design is at the forefront. AMSTERDAM From designer shopping to a glamorous fashion week, Amsterdam has a fashionable centre just waiting to be discovered. Amsterdam is a source of inspiration for stylish individuals. Even if your budget prevents you from shopping for exclusive high-end designs, there are plenty of more affordable ways to soak up Amsterdam’s fashionable vibe. A lot of the Dutch Designers have choosen Amsterdam, in the Fashion & Museum district you will find the Dutch Designers: Fred de la Bretonière, Pauw and The People of the Labyrinths. When you are interested in Haute Couture visit the designers Mart Visser en Frans Molenaar. You will find other Dutch Designers throughout of Amsterdam like the international well known Designers Viktor & Rolf , Mart Visser, Jan Jansen Shoes, Tony Cohen, Monique Collignon and Marlies Dekkers, young talented designers such as Edwin Oudshoorn, Dennis Diem and Dorhout Mees are also Amsterdam-based fashion houses. Dutch brands: G-Star RAW, Claudia Strater, Gaastra, Gsus Industries, Scotch & Soda and Supertrash. ■ CINQ - 11

AMSTERDAM: CITY OF CULTURE FINE ART & ANTIQUES Amsterdam offers a diverse array of world-class entertainment, as for centuries has been one of the leading centres of culture in Europe. High-quality culture spread across 65 theatres and concert halls, 42 museums and over 140 galleries. The multitude of theatres, galleries, museums and concert venues put Amsterdam at the very heart of arts and culture in the Netherlands.

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS (SEE ALSO PAGE 36) Exhibitions and cultural events are being organised in the va-rious towns and villages in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England that are of importance for the life and work of the artist. For the first time, museums like Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and institutions that actively contribute to conser-ving Van Gogh’s heritage are working together on a large scale. The Kröller-Müller Museum is a second home to Vincent van Gogh. The museum boasts almost 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings, making it the second largest collection of Van Goghs in the world. In addition, the Museum is home to top works by modern masters including Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. MUSEUMS Throughout the centuries, the Dutch gave the world most famous painters as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh, who until today provoke our admiration. This tradition continued in the 20th Century with Mondrian and later with the Cobra group abstract artists. Amsterdam art museums have not only unparalleled collection of the most famous, but also many lesser known amazing Dutch masters of all epochs. The State Museum called in Dutch Rijksmuseum, and a wonderful collection of modern art from Europe and America at The City Museum called in Dutch Stedelijk Museum are a must to visit. The principal collection of the world’s beloved painter at the Van Gogh Museum and a rich division of the Russian Hermitage Museum are also not to be mis-

SPIEGELKWARTIER the art & antique district

If you collect antiques or modern art, the Spiegelkwartier is the place to go. Just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum you will find this historical neighbourhood with its typical old Dutch houses. This area has been the heart of the national art and antiques trade for the past eighty years and has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such a stunning choice of art and antiques. HISTORY Today one finds fine art and antiques dealers in almost every house in the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and on the Spiegelgracht. This is the result of a historical development of almost 120 years. Without the building of the renown Rijksmuseum the neighbourhood would surely have looked very different. Before the Rijksmuseum was built (1877/1885) there used to be a large windmill on that spot. The existing small business like watchmakers, carpenters, furniture repair shops etc, slowly changed into art and antique dealers. ARTS & ANTIQUES (MINI MUSEUMS) In a cluster of historic houses, you can find a rich treasure-trove of art and antiques,mini-museums that invite you not only to admire, but give you the opportunity to buy. The shops and galleries of the Spiegelkwartier offer some of the finest art and antiques you’re likely to find anywhere in the world, from Roman glass to Dutch Old Masters, from Delftware to tribal art, contemporary sculpture to Art Deco jewellery, centuries-old furniture to a painting finished yesterday. The Spiegelkwartier has been at the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for more than a hundred years. Over 70 specialised dealers offer not only top-quality collections, but considerable expertise. And they gladly share there expertise with you. RIJKSMUSEUM According to old address books the first antique dealer started in 1900 in de Kerkstraat nr 219. In 1910 there are already seven antique shops mentioned. After the war the number of galleries and shops really extended. If one looks at the objects bought by the Rijksmuseum in the Spiegelkwartier one notices that it mainly concerns objects like furniture, glass, textile and earthenware.

This is not surprising since the shops were specialized in these antiquities. The proof of a historically grown connection with the Rijksmuseum is the exhibition in 1985 of a selection of objects bought in the Spiegelkwartier. FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS TO SOUVENIRS The Art and Antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archeological finds to 17th century furniture, glass and Dutch Delftware, from oriental art to Art Nouveau, from tribal art to contemporary art, from medieval statues and antique clocks to jewellery and, last but not at least paintings from the COBRA period or finished yesterday. And you don’t have to break the plastic, also for little money you can buy an unique ‘souvenir’. FOOD & DRINKS & SHOPPING Tucked in between these Aladdin’s caves are cafés and restaurants perfect for a little time out, whether you feel like a bowl of healthy soup, or coffee and cake; a light lunch or dinner with singing staff. You can pick up nifty vintage clothes at knock-down prices, or pre-loved designer wear. Then there are shoes and bags from famed Dutch designers and gifts aplently, from stylish Dutch contemporary object to toys for the kids back home. MUSEUMS A visit to the Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to one of many museums in the area. At walking distance you will find the Rijksmuseum, Vincent van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, FOAM and the Allard Pierson museum. A fun way to get to the Spiegelkwartier and the nearby Rijksmuseum, is with the CANAL-BUS. WWW.SPIEGELKWARTIER.AMSTERDAM

DANCING WITH THE ENEMY

This autumn EYE is organizing a major exhibition on the work of two prominent film artists: Apichatpong Weerasethakul (1970) and Cao Guimarães (1965). Their acclaimed work evokes a world that blends dream, sensory experience and reality, inviting visitors to momentarily step out of their rationally structured lives

The exhibition Dancing with the Enemy recalls an extraordinary life marked by love, betrayal, and fierce determination. The visitor experiences the impressive story of Roosie through many photographs and films she made before and after the war. Dancing with the Enemy tells the gripping story of Roosie Glaser (1914-2000). Rosie was an emancipated woman who defied convention, she toured Western Europe teaching ballroom dancing to high acclaim. Kröller-Müller Museum a most serene museum In the heart of the Netherlands, situated in De Hoge Veluwe National Park, is where you will find the museum and sculpture garden that goes by the name Kröller-Müller Museum. Namend after its founder and art collector Helene Kröller-Müller, the museum opened in 1938 and gained a considerabele international reputation since, primarily due to having the second-largest Van Gogh-collection in the world and the impressive sculpture garden that blends culture and nature beautifully. “A novelty that inspired other museums to do the same”, says curator Jannet de Goede about the sculpture garden. Sporting works by Auguste Rodin, Richard Serra, Jean Dubuffet, Joep van Lieshout, Pierre Huyghe and many others. The garden was designed with a landscape architect and artists were given bit of spae the needed to have their creations come to live. “It’s one of the main reasons why we see so many visitors come to our museum, just like the Van Gogh Collection with Overblown Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, Bridge at Arles and Terrace of a Café at Night as the biggest crowd pullers. Helene Kröller-Müller was quick to recognise Van Gogh’s brilliance and it’s her passion for collection that made our museum what is is today”. 52 - CINQ 40 amsterdamjournal.nl

Winter exhibition: 100th anniversary of ‘De Stijl’ and its co-founder Bart van der Leck 14 October 2017 – 2 April 2018 Naturally the Kröller-Müller Museum offers much more than just the garden and the works of Van Gogh. The seasonal exhibitions touch on many different subjects and eras with the winter exhibition a surprisingly one. In 2017 it is hundred years since the founding of De Stijl. With masterpieces by Mondrian, Van Doesburg and Van der Leck among others, the Kröller-Müller Museum is one of the treasure troves of De Stijl. In this thematic year Mondrian to Dutch Design, 100 years of shaping the world, the museum presents The patron and the ‘house painter’: Helene Kröller-Müller and Bart van der Leck. Bart van der Leck, De kat - The cat, 1914

OUTSIDE AMSTERDAM

This exhibition presents a selection from the 42 and approximately 400 drawings in the museum’s collection. Between 1912 and 1918 Van der Leck received an annual allowance from Helene KröllerMüller. Thus she became Van der Leck’s patron and in 1914 the artist was employed by the firm Wm H. Müller & Co. Van der Leck created posters, a large stained glass window for the headquarters in The Hague, mosaics for the office in London and colour designs for the interiors of the family’s residences. “Bart van der Leck had somewhat of a complex relationship with his patron. That created a tense dynamic between Helene’s vision and Bart as the artist who suddenly had no worries about money anymore. Based on the many letters she wrote him, we follow her train of thought and see how Van der Leck’s new work relates to the rest of her collection”, explains curator Jannet de Goede. The works of Van der Leck on display also showing how he developed his style in the space of two years that eventually defined what we now know as De Stijl being the first who opted to narrow his pallet to red, yellow and blue. Taste the authentic flavours of

Indonesia

We invite you to enjoy the enormous diversity that the Indonesian kitchen has to offer. In our restaurants in Utrecht and Amsterdam we use pure ingredients to serve you tradition, with a wide range of flavours and preparation methods, but always with our own touch. Fish, vegetarian, or meat, a comprehensive rijsttafel of various rice-based dishes and side dishes, or a dish authentic to one of the many islands: come and enjoy the many flavours that Indonesia has to offer.

West Java The capital of West-Java is Bandung. This old colonial city used to be the centre of the Dutch government in 1920. Nowadays Bandung is a blooming city inhabiting students from all over Indonesia. Bandung is a lively and chaotic city. If you’re looking for a refreshing drink, you should definitely try Cendol. They sell Cendol on every streetcorner in Bandung

Sate Kambing It’s an Indonesian tradition to roast thin-sliced goat meat over a charcoal fire and serve it with sweet soy sauce and shredded onion. Our kambing is marinated for a whole night to get an intense flavor. We only grill the Kambing for a very brief time so the meat stays nice and tender. Sate Kambing is our signature dish!

Cendol The tropical weather of Indonesia asks for the necessary cooling off which can only be taken care of by a refreshing drink. One of the most famous is Cendol: a mix of coconut milk, palm sugar, ice cream and green dyed strings of rice flour. It may sound like a curious combination, but the result is delicious! The tropical flavour of coconut, cold ice cream and the sweetness of palm sugar makes this one of Indonesia’s most popular refreshments.

Indonesia

The country of Indonesia has a wide variety when it comes down to the ways of preparing a dish.

Soto Ayam Take the Soto Ayam for instance. You can order Soto Ayam in almost every part of Indonesia, but in every region they have their own specific way of making it. Our recipe of the Soto Ayam with chicken, bean sprouts and egg is most similar to the soto from Betawi. Betawi is the area around Jakarta. This Soto has a yellow colour because of the turmeric we put in the broth.

West Sumatra

Bali

North Sulawesi

Are you looking to spice things up? Be ready for a trip through West-Sumatra and beyond, like Lake Toba. Lake Toba is known for its huge crater. Lake Toba is the biggest and deepest crater lake in the world.

After a long day surfing at the beach of Kuta, there is nothing better than to relax at one of Kuta’s many beach clubs. However, Bali has to offer much more than just beaches and sun. Like beautiful rice fields for instance.

Daging Rendang

Sate lilit

It may be the most famous dish from Indonesia and according to CNN the most tasteful dish in the world! Originally this dish comes from Padang, West-Sumatra. It is tradition to eat Rendang at parties and festivities.

On the island of Bali, the sate lilit is a must-try. The preparation is quite different than you might expect from a sate. First they first grind meat or fish and mix it with coconut and spices. Then, it’s rolled into a sausage shaped portion that they put on a bamboo stick for roasting. In our restaurant we make our Aneka Laut Lilit from Kingcrab and shrimps and serve it on a straw of lemongrass. The lemongrass provides the sate with a fresh bite.

The capital of North Sulawesi is Manado. This city has a lot to offer when it comes to culture and nature. There is a national park where you can find the most beautiful coral of Indonesia. On Sulawesi they have the tendency of eating extraordinary animals like dogs, rats or bats. You will not find any of those on our menu. We do serve a lovely dish of mackerel from the North of Sulawesi.

Daging Blado The most spicy food can be found on Sumatra. Daging Blado is made by first braising the beef. they flatten the beef by hammering it. Then it’s fried for a short time to get a crisp crust and tender, slow cooked meat inside. The sauce of the Blado contains red peppers, onion and garlic.

Ikan Kembung Sulawesi is known for using many spices in the kitchen like ginger and lemongrass. Compared to other parts of Indonesia, like Java, the dishes in Sulawesi are significantly less sweet. Our take on Sulawesi is the Ikan Kembung; a steamed mackerel filet served in a fresh and spicy sauce with candle nuts, chili pepper, lemongrass and lemon leaves.

Spectacular in the design is the use of glass: guests have a view over the oldest part of Amsterdam and they can look straight into the kitchen to fully experience Moshik his world.

Located in a 75-year-old greenhouse that once The unique setting and sleek interior design give the restaurant a wonderfully natural ambiance, enhanced by the light that pours through the glass ceiling. Fresh greens and herbs are grown in the restaurant’s own surrounding farm, and the ever-changing Mediterranean menu consists of a starter selection, main course and dessert. One of the places to see and be seen in Amsterdam, De Kas is located next to the beautiful Park Frankendael, a former 17th century country estate.

Restaurant Vermeer offers a superb dining experience that has ensured the elite of the Dutch capital return again and again. Head Chef Christopher Naylor has created a menu that has delighted critics and led to the restaurant being awarded a Michelin star. Stylish and graceful, the restaurant would have appealed to its namesake, Johannes Vermeer, who, much like the restaurant, was well known for his skill and precision in his craft.

At &samhoud places you’ll have a special companion: children in SOS Children’s Villages eat along with the restaurant guests. With our donation approximately 100,000 meals can be handed out to children in SOS Children’s Villages. We call this initiative ‘eat and share’.

The only two-starred Michelin restaurant in Amsterdam, Ciel Bleu mixes stunning views with delicious dishes to create one of Amsterdam’s finest eateries.

Housed within one of the city’s swankiest hotels, La Rive’s clientele is similar to that of InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam: rock stars, royalty and dignitaries. Getting a table at this restaurant may not be the easiest task in the world but your patience will be rewarded. Chef De Cuisine Rogér Rassin, Maitre d’ Ronald Opten and Sommelier Ted Bunnik work together to create a perfect dining experience for elite travelers; expect a delectable menu of Mediterranean and French cuisine, a wine list that includes generous vintages to complement any dish, and impeccable service from staff.

A restaurant named in honor of a Dutch painter, the Michelin-starred Vinkeles is located in The Dylan hotel that was once a Catholic bakery.

Located on the 23rd floor of the delightful Hotel Okura, the restaurant offers sumptuous fare among elegant surroundings. Chefs Onno Kokmeijer and Arjan Speelman use fresh, locally produced ingredients to create gastronomic masterpieces. Combined with impeccable service, the food on offer is likely to be one of the highlights of your holiday, but remember to book ahead; the restaurant’s popularity means that reservations need to be made well in advance

Indeed, the interior design still has touches of the restaurant’s former life, including the original ovens. Head Chef Dennis Kuipers has created a delightful menu of delicate French cuisine that flirts between classic and contemporary. Many of the city’s elite head to Vinkeles to enjoy the fabulous views over the Keizersgracht, while sampling the fine food on offer.
