Christmas Greetings! Christmas Greetings! Dear Fellow Carolers, Welcome to Sing an Irish Christmas. Thank you for sharing one of your Yuletide evenings with us as we sing carols together. This year the Lord added another little daughter to our family! We have marveled once again at the sweet wonder and breathtaking vulnerability of a little baby growing in the womb and first blinking in the light. Psalm 139 tells us that as we have been getting to know her she, like each of us, is completely known by the Lord. Every fiber of her being, her thoughts, her words, her steps. Our steps have brought us here tonight with all our joys and sorrows. He has known every word we will sing. He knows our thoughts as we consider once again the story He unfolded - the coming of the baby in a manger, the promised King, the Savior of the world. From the unfathomable heights of a star-jeweled sky to the hidden depths of a tiny heart beating with life all the vastness of God’s creation whispers the glory of His name and the beauty of His truth. What a privilege it is for us to sing of these glorious things and to ponder them in our hearts.

“O come let us adore Him!”

Keith & Kristyn For those who would like to find out more about the meaning of Christmas and about the Christian Faith we have a couple of complimentary books available to you in the lobby – please just ask! ABOUT

Keith & Kristyn Getty

Keith and Kristyn Getty occupy a unique space in the world of music as preeminent modern hymn writers. In re-inventing and popularizing the traditional hymn form, the Gettys are championing a catalogue of songs that teach Christian doctrine and cross musical genres. Their hymns are sung throughout the world, with “In Christ Alone” (penned by Keith and Stuart Townend) anchoring their canon of globally-sung songs that includes more than seventy titles listed by CCLI in its US and UK top 2000 lists. The couple also tours internationally - their Christmas show plays annually at Carnegie Hall and is the feature of PBS & BBC television broadcasts, while their hymn tours have visited from church communities throughout North America to Royal Albert Hall in London and performances for presidents, prime ministers, and the

Now a seasoned touring musician nearing her mid-20s, Hull has delivered her most inspired, accomplished, and mature recorded work to date; no small feat. Weighted Mind is a landmark achievement, not just in Sierra Hull’s career, but in the world of folk-pop, bluegrass, and acoustic music overall. With instrumentation comprised largely of mandolin, bass, and vocals, this is genre-transcending music at its best, with production by Béla Fleck and special harmony vocal guests Alison Krauss, Abigail Washburn, and Rhiannon Giddens adding to the luster. Hull speaks eloquently, in her challenging and sensitive originals, her heartfelt vocals, and once again breaks new ground on the mandolin. Béla Fleck special guests on banjo on two tracks and duo partner, Ethan Jodziewicz, not only anchors the record on bass, but introduces us to a major new instrumental voice.

The History of Irish Christmas Our first collaboration as a married couple in 2004 was a collection of Christmas songs based around John 1, and every year we’ve tried to write new carols and songs for the church to sing. Irish Christmas has become a wonderful opportunity to share this music as it has evolved and changed over the years.

2010

December

As with many creative ventures, it begins with a phone call. For Joy—An Irish Christmas (the initial title of this Christmas tour), the call was an invitation from Tom Bledsoe to be part of a special Christmas celebration in 2010 with George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows (with Billy Graham speaking on the first evening). The 30 minutes of music we prepared for that first night was expanded to a fuller evening of music subsequently presented to a number of churches that year.

2011 December After a trip to Ireland to record the Joy—An Irish Christmas studio album (called after our first daughter, Eliza Joy), the first official tour kicked off with 18 performances and finished with a sell-out performance at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

2012 December The second year of the tour played to more than 30,000 people over 18 performances combining church concerts and numerous concert halls, again finishing at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. In addition, there were two special Grand Ole Opry performances at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS

2014

November/December

After taking a year hiatus due to the birth of Charlotte Juliana, the third year of the tour was attended by an estimated 50,000 people at 18 performances. With a combination of box office sell-outs and standing-room-only general admission concerts, the tour premiered in Ontario and was recorded by the BBC. The tour featured a return to the Grand Ole Opry, our sold-out premiere at Carnegie Hall with special guest Ricky Skaggs, and again finishing with a sold out evening at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

2015

November/December

In 2015, Joy—An Irish Christmas was presented in more than 20 cities, to an estimated 60,000 people across North America and in several prestigious concert halls with sold out performances including Carnegie Hall (New York), The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.), Roy Thomson Hall (Toronto), and The Fox Theatre (Atlanta). A live performance was also released on CD and DVD and broadcast across America on Public Television stations during the Christmas season.

2016

December

With both a deepening desire to clearly tell the Christmas story and a growing emphasis on carol singing, we developed the second half “lessons in carols” format akin to the traditional service from King’s College, Cambridge. We had four pieces of art commissioned, to represent the four songs of Christmas as told in Luke. We developed the Concert Hall Series with Alistair Begg at each event and new special guests including Heather Headley, David Kim, Blair Linne, Andrew Nemr, and Laura Story, as well as welcome returns from John Patitucci and Ricky Skaggs.

2017

December

Following the launch of the Sing! conference initiative, the focus deepened toward congregational singing and the celebration of carols in particular. This tour featured some of the greatest memories in the history of Irish Christmas from Joni Eareckson Tada doing the readings at Carnegie Hall and sharing what Christmas means to her 50 years on from her accident, as well as Vice President and Second Lady Pence attending the Kennedy Center show and hosting the band to a private performance in their home. Kristyn was pregnant with their fourth child, Tahlia, and new special guests included David Kim (concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra) performing Winter from the Four Seasons, and our friend David Platt sharing a Christmas message at two of the events.

Ten Christmas Carols Everyone Should Know BY

Keith Getty

Two years ago, during the Christmas tour, we were interviewed on national radio about the peculiarity of our Christmas show as a public television broadcast focusing on Christmas carols, when they claimed only one of the top thirty carols in America is actually Christian. The longer we thought about it, the more we became convinced as hymnwriters, one of our main jobs with this event is to introduce people to some of the greatest hymns of the Christian faith – the greatest Christmas carols. This year we’ve included an article as an introduction to the program sheet music so you can enjoy singing in harmony and taking them home to share with family and friends. We hope you enjoy singing them and that they become a well-loved part of your Christmas season.

It’s all too easy to look up at the end of December and—poof—realize the opportunity for meaningful reflection has passed, vacuumed up or packed away for next year, like another decoration. So this Christmas, how can we truly be present and not just buy presents? We find the answer in the most fundamental (and perhaps surprising) of places—in singing traditional carols together. Redemption drew a baby breath that first chilly Christmas night, offering hope to a forlorn world dying to be rescued. But even before Jesus lay in the manger,

32

his miraculous story was already being told in song. Mary sang about him in the Magnificat (Luke 1:46–51). Zechariah sang about him in the Benedictus (Luke 1:68–79). And of course, on the night of his birth, the skies over the shepherds’ field became a vertical stage for hosts of choiring angels. We have each been created, compelled, and commanded to sing. It’s thus no surprise that the oldest Christmas traditions are the masterpieces of the carols. Our annual Christmas event—Sing! An Irish Christmas Tour—features 10 timeless hymns none of us should ever forget.

Joy to the World BY

Matt Boswell

One of my favorite memories as a boy was singing with our church family on Christmas Eve. As the service would near its conclusion, the deacons would distribute candles around the congregation while the lights grew dark. As we sang our final hymn of the evening, the room would flood with candlelight as voices announced the message of Christmas,“Joy to the World, the Lord is come, let earth receive her king.” I felt a foot taller while singing with full voice among my friends and neighbors thinking about the truth and mystery of the incarnation.

The song that I sang as a boy has now been sung for over three hundred years as a beloved Christmas carol. “Joy to the World” was written by Isaac Watts (16741748), who is heralded as the ‘father of English hymnody’. While the hymn is often featured during the Christmas season,

68

it was originally written to be sung year round as a metrical version of Psalm 98:4. “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.” From the first time this hymn was published in 1709, to the pews of our churches today, its powerful call to “repeat the sounding joy” continues. The joyful theme we hear in this hymn is a two-fold: it is a joy that looks back on the incarnation and one that also looks forward to the second coming of Christ.

Joy Looking Back Isaac Watts understood all of Scripture as pointing to Jesus Christ, (Luke 24:44) so when it comes to his version of Psalm 98, he wants to ‘make David sing like a Christian’ by showing how Christ is the fulfillment of the passage. One of themes we see in verses one and two explore nuances of the story of the birth of Christ. In the line ‘let every heart prepare him room’, we hear an echo of the innkeeper who had no room for the mother of Christ while labor was nearing. (Luke 2:7) We rightly sing this lyric to our own hearts and sing it to others as an invitation to prepare room in each of us for the good news of the Savior’s birth. The second verse is replete with the reminder that the praise of God is commanded to be in our hearts and on our lips. We are to employ our songs of the Savior and his rule and reign. The Gospel of Luke records four specific songs that each provide a unique contribution to the songs of the savior’s birth. Mary magnifies and rejoices in the mercy of God (Luke 1:46-55),

SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS

Zechariah sings a song of prophecy that Jesus would fulfill God’s promise (Luke 1:6879). The angels “sing” the pronouncement of the coming of Christ (Luke 2:14), and Simeon sings a prayer confessing he can depart in peace now that his eyes have seen the coming of the Christ (Luke 2:29-32). Each of these accounts show the resounding joy of singing the gospel of Christ.

Joy Looking Forward The third verse of this text is often passed over because of its imagery of the curse, but without the presence of the curse (Gen. 3:16-19), the promise of deliverance loses its power. (Gen. 3:15) These lines rightly point us to the day that will come when God’s blessing (Gen. 3:17) flows as far as the curse is found. We rejoice looking back on the faithfulness of God, and we also rejoice looking forward to what God has promised in the future. We sing between what is and what will be; the already and the not yet of our faith. With this glorious vision in sight, we see all of the earth is called to come and make a joyful noise of praise to God. While the sting of sin is great, there is a hope that is greater: Jesus Christ who rules the world with truth and grace. It is this grace that causes hearts dead in sin to come alive in Christ. (Eph. 2:89) The final two lines of our hymn do not tie up our story neatly with the end of a story, but with a call to continue marveling in

The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love.

Let’s be a people who love and sing and wonder with this kind of unshakable joy! (Phil. 4:4) We rejoice in Christ by always looking back and remembering his great faithfulness and love. We rejoice by looking forward to his coming again where on the shores of forever there is an even greater joy to come.

discusses modern hymns in It Was Good: Making Music to the Glory of God

The three It Was Good books seek to answer the question “What does it mean to be a creative individual who is a follower of the creative God?” The series addresses the visual arts, music, and the performing arts. The essays in each book offer theoretical and practical insights into glorifying God through the arts. Some of the contributors to the series include: Tim Keller, Shai Linne, William Edgar, Sandra McCracken, John Patitucci, Makoto Fujimura, Stephen Nichols, Brian Godawa, Charlie Peacock, and Alissa Wilkinson.

E M A I S PROUD T O SUPPORT KEITH A N D KRISTYN GETTY!

Every Time, Remember... In his teaching on communion in 1 Corinthians 11:24, the Apostle Paul quoted Christ by saying, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” The importance of this commandment should not be understated. We are to gather regularly and remember the sacrifice and atonement that was made for us. That is why we take communion seriously, and offer a complete selection of resources to help your church with communion, and each time you do this... remember.
