WELCOME TO SING!

6

Dear Friends, It is with so much excitement and celebration that we welcome you to Sing! 2021—whether you are joining us in Nashville or online. We would like to publicly thank the team who presented and all of you who supported the digital Sing! Global conference in 2020. How much we missed singing together in person last year and encouraging one another in that way! Thankfully, the singing did not stop, as singing is not just for the special occasion or even just when we are together. It is a gift for all of life that we each have a deepened gratitude for after these last months—words and melodies that give expression to the great faith we profess in Christ alone, to the struggles that we share, to the hope we cling to. We sing as we wake in the morning, as we drive to work, as we bring our needs to the Lord, as we make a meal, as we put our children to bed, as we go to sleep. But for these next days we bring all the fruit of these times to the feast we will share. The stories of God’s faithfulness, the reminders of what is truly important, the new plans we are making as local congregations going forward. What a critical opportunity we have been given: to help restore the voice of the congregation, to renew our commitment to the call of Christ, to reunite as God’s church here and around the world. Even as we enjoy the comfort of this rich time may it all be received with a ready mind and heart towards devotion and service to the Lord. The challenges we face are very real. Amy Carmichael writes, “So sing. Never be afraid of singing too much. We are much more likely to sing too little.” May the grace of Christ be with us all, Grace and peace,

Keith and Kristyn

SPECIAL THANKS: Keith and Kristyn would like to thank all the conference contributors and all the teams at Streamline Event Agency, CSI DMC Event Management, and Getty Music for your wonderful partnership in the SING! Initiative.

SPECIAL THANKS TO VOM

Getty Music would like to extend our deepest thanks to our Official Missions Partner, The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM). Because of their partnership, we have been able to expand the vision and reach of the Sing! movement beyond what we would have ever dreamed possible, resulting in the equipping of thousands of churches and leaders even amid a global pandemic. Their friendship and support have energized us during this season of ministry, and we could not be more thankful. The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) is a nonprofit, interdenominational missions organization that serves persecuted Christians around the world. Founded in 1967 by Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand, VOM is dedicated to inspiring believers to deepen their commitment to Christ and to fulfill his Great Commission — no matter the cost. As a special gift, every attendee will receive a free copy of Foxe: The Voices of the Martyrs from VOM. We highly encourage you to sign up for their free prayer calendar and magazine to know how you can better pray for and serve the persecuted church around the world.

In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone, Who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save Till on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For ev’ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the pow’r of Christ in me From life’s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand Till He returns or calls me home Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend ©2001 Thankyou Music (PRS) / Adm worldwide at CapitolCMGPublishing.com, excluding Europe which is adm by Integritymusic.com

VISION FOR SING! SING! is an initiative of Keith and Kristyn Getty to help individuals, families, and churches deepen their faith through singing. The core values of the SING! movement are: RICH THEOLOGY TIMELESS ARTISTRY VIBRANT SINGING IN THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, CHURCHES, AND COMMUNITIES Keith’s and Kristyn’s Sing! book was released in September 2017 at the inaugural SING! Conference. That first gathering, which commemorated the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, led to subsequent conferences on singing the Psalms (2018) and singing the life of Christ (2019). The movement grew to include events around the world with one-day city conferences and arena shows. Last year saw the introduction of Sing! Global, as believers from around the world participated in an innovative online event focused on Singing the Scriptures (2020), along with the development of SingGlobal.com, a new online learning portal to encourage leaders and equip churches 365 days a year.

12

The newest chapter in this story is Sing! 2021: In Christ Alone. As a hybrid event, we will gather in-person to sing our faith together, as well on the digital SingGlobal.com platform where like-minded believers from all over the world can participate together in this movement. The music this year will be heavily influenced by the great hymns of history. Sing! 2022 is entitled Christ Our Hope in Life and Death: Prayers and Confessions, with a particular emphasis on the importance of prayer and liturgy in our worship. We are launching seven weekend events in churches around the United States in 2022, each also entitled Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.

Artists help us to see, feel, experience and know in deep and meaningful ways. Those are critical skills for a life-giving, intimate relationship with God. The problem is that most Bible reading practices currently taught are solely cognitive approaches that often bypass the skills of the artist. This session will focus on giving participants experience in using the visual arts and imagination to provide space to encounter the voice and presence of God in Scripture. Our presenter will be Dr. Phil Collins, Executive Director of the Taylor University Center for Scripture Engagement.

INTRODUCING

THE

Getty Music FOUNDATION

The Getty Music Foundation has been established with a mission to educate churches, families and individuals across the globe in a Biblical view of theology, artistry, and mission in congregational singing.

36

We live in the most exciting time to be Christians. There are more professing Christians than at any point in human history, more churches planting, and the Bible is in more languages than at any point in human history. Yet the challenges are more fierce than at any point and the global church - a great multitude from all tribes and peoples and languages, bound together in Christ - needs more support than ever before. Deep believers need encouragement to sing together of the incomparable riches of His grace. Since the Sing! conference began we have been investing time and financial resources in ensuring the conference was available in other languages and we have been able to offer travel grants (with free passes) to Christian leaders around the world. Now through the newly-founded Foundation, we are translating this year’s Sing! Global conference sessions into at least 10 languages (Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish), making them freely available through networks across the globe throughout the fall.

2022

In addition to this, in 2022 we intend to bring over 100 musicians and church leaders from around the world to be part of the conference, to help resource, inspire and learn from the communities from which they came.

2023

2023 sees the inaugural International Sing! conference, in addition to the annual event in Nashville. We are planning for these to rotate round the continents in four-year patterns, with 2023 being “Sing! Europe” in Belfast, to which we aim to bring over 100 leaders from many different countries in Europe to be part of the multi-day event.

2024

In 2024 and beyond we also look forward to working in partnership with the Sing! Hymnal to continue our mission to educate the global church with this new opportunity.

The Foundation is registered with the IRS as a non-profit with 501c3 status. Operating with a separate Board and separate staff team, it has a single-minded focus on its charitable mission. The Foundation began with a tithe of royalties and income from the Getty Music Group and we are now inviting others to contribute. If you wish to support our mission to equip, educate and encourage the global church, please find out more at GettyMusicFoundation.org

Christ Our Hope in Life and Death: Behind the Song The pandemic has reminded us that life is fragile. There is so much about the future we do not know. Yet, we do know that all of us will face death. Unless Jesus returns first, it is the one certainty we can count on. The historic creeds and catechisms of the church are honest about this reality. The Heidelberg Catechism of 1563 begins, "What is your only comfort in life and in death?" The answer is profound: "That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him." These are truths we must sing. That is why, in the providence of God, I am excited that I have been able to teach my four daughters a new song this year. It is a song that is honest about death, and that’s why I think it is a song that can remind us of our unshakeable hope.

40

This song took over two years to complete. A couple friends and fellow songwriters, Jordan Kauflin and Matt Merker, brought me an idea for a hymn of hope. Little did we know that the other two writers on our team, Matt Boswell and Matt Papa, were trying to write a song based on the first article of the Heidelberg Catechism, quoted above. We brought the two ideas together, and around the piano at our home in Northern Ireland, a new song was born: “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.” Christianity that ignores the reality of death is utterly inauthentic. We need songs that are honest about the grave, for we have real hope to offer our troubled world. Though many believers may be singing at home, unable to gather with their churches as usual, we can still sing with confidence, because we know the One who conquered the grave by his resurrection. We need not approach death crippled by fear. As this song reminds us, we can sing “Hallelujah”—because Christ himself is our hope in life and death. —KEITH GETTY

S ING ! G LOBAL C ON V E RSAT IO NS A series of vital interviews with thought leaders in the arts, music, and Christian culture JOHN MACARTHUR – The Deity of Christ in a Pluralistic Age Our age is defined by pluralism, relativism, and a rejection of truth. No wonder many believers struggle to understand and articulate the deity of Christ in conversations with friends, family, and neighbors. Yet we need not lose confidence: the Word of God equips us to take a bold stand for proclaiming and singing of Christ alone as the only hope for a lost world. This vital conversation will be invaluable to anyone seeking to share their faith with those who have challenging questions at this unique cultural moment. John MacArthur is the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, as well as an author, conference speaker, chancellor of The Master’s University and Seminary, and featured teacher with the Grace to You media ministry.

KAREN PENCE – In Christ Alone: Personal Reflections on Christianity, Culture, and Arts Education Karen Pence, as former Second Lady of the United States, holds a unique vantage point into culture both here in America and around the world through her service alongside former Vice President Mike Pence. Kristyn and Keith first met Karen and Mike just before Mike became Governor of Indiana, and they have always been inspired by the Pences’ love for the Lord as well as Karen’s passion for art therapy, creativity, and the power of beauty... and of course the fact that they’re Irish! In this conversation, we hear Karen’s reflections on the role of the arts for believers and society at large. Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, is a mother, educator, and award-winning watercolor artist. As Second Lady of the United States, Mrs. Pence worked to bring attention to art therapy and to the sacrifices made by military service members and their families. Mrs. Pence dedicated 25 years in the classroom as an elementary school teacher before becoming the First Lady of Indiana in 2013. As Second Lady of the United States, Mrs. Pence committed to raising awareness and educating the public about the mental health profession of art therapy in the United States and around the world. In October 2017, Mrs. Pence launched her art therapy initiative, Healing with the HeART. Mrs. Pence and Vice President Mike Pence have been married since 1985 and are proud parents of three adult children.

MIKE COSPER – Leadership, Celebrity Culture, and Hope for the Future The last two years have seen many crippling scandals from Christian leaders. In this reflective conversation, we ask Mike Cosper, who created the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast, how believers can recover from the devastation of these disappointments. . We also chat about how to shepherd, care for, and encourage musicians at the local church level in light of the importance of character and humility. Mike Cosper is a writer and podcaster. He’s the Director of Podcasting for Christianity Today, where he hosts The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill and Cultivated: A Podcast about Faith and Work. He’s also the author of several books, including Recapturing the Wonder: Transcendent Faith in a Disenchanted World (Intervarsity Press). . His other books include Faith Among The Faithless (Thomas Nelson), Rhythms of Grace and The Stories We Tell (both published by Crossway). Mike also served as one of the founding pastors at Sojourn Church in . Louisville, Kentucky, from which he launched Sojourn Music – a collective of musicians writing songs for . the church. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife, Sarah, and their daughters Dorothy and Maggie.

JOHN RUTTER – A Vision for Choirs Today (Even During COVID!)

The last two years have been devastating for many of us who have been involved in choirs – adults, children, schools, churches, and communities. John Rutter, the most accomplished choral composer of the last 100 years, offered to share some of his thoughts on how choirs foster community and why we should prioritize choral music in our plans for the future, whatever your church or musical background. This talk is as vital for choir leaders as it is for choir members, and indeed as it is for others who are curious as to how choirs can become an integral part of their lives and ministries. John Rutter was born in London and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. He first came to notice as a composer during his student years; much of his early work consisted of church music and other choral pieces including Christmas carols. From 1975–79 he was Director of Music at his alma mater, Clare College, and directed the college chapel choir in various recordings and broadcasts. Since 1979 he has divided his time between composition and conducting. Today his compositions, including such concert-length works as Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, The Gift of Life, and Visions are performed around the world. His music has featured in a number of British royal occasions, including the two most recent royal weddings. He edits the Oxford Choral Classics series, and, with Sir David Willcocks, co-edited four volumes of Carols for Choirs. In 1983 he formed his own choir the Cambridge Singers, with whom he has made numerous recordings, and he appears regularly in several countries as guest conductor and choral ambassador. He holds a Lambeth Doctorate in Music, and in 2007 was awarded a CBE for services to music.

PHIL WICKHAM – Creativity, Hymns, and a Living Hope Phil Wickham is arguably one of the most prolific worship songwriters over the last five years, with songs such as “Living Hope” serving contemporary churches as well as more conservative and traditional churches. In this conversation, Phil shares his compositional and creative process in ways that are deeply valuable to anyone who wants to write songs, as well as to those who simply appreciate beautiful hymns that enrich our devotion to Christ. Join us as we chat about why Phil’s favorite songs are those about the cross of Jesus. Since his self-titled debut in 2006, Phil Wickham has emerged as a leader in the modern worship movement, penning countless songs sung in churches around the world including “This Is Amazing Grace” and “Living Hope.” His latest project, Hymn of Heaven, was written during a year when the family of God couldn’t physically gather in houses of worship around the world. “Hymn of Heaven is full of praise and thankfulness, just lifting up the name of Jesus and speaking what we really know the reality is even though we don’t see it,” he says. Wickham’s music has received hundreds of millions of streams across his catalog and platforms, with his discography including eight full-length projects, multiple Christmas releases, and a series of popular Singalong records that capture Wickham’s songs doing what they were always meant to do—giving people language to sing to God.

These simplified tree motifs are reflections on the Genesis creation narrative of given things, recorded in chapter one. They are a type of elementary shorthand , yet each one carries high symbolic significance. Each tree silhouette contains an active spectrum of colouring indicating the growth cycle of seasonal life, the input patterns parallel the direction purposed by the giving Creator. Trees are by nature obedient, obedient in being, they do not deviate, they are faithfully rooted and grow daily into their reflective purpose and praise.

PAJAMAS

OR

PEW?

BOB KAUFLIN

HOW TO GET YOUR PEOPLE SINGING AGAIN No one will quickly forget the effect that Covid-19 has had on the church. Activities we took for granted—singing together, seeing smiling faces, experiencing physical care, sharing the Lord’s Supper, sitting together under the preaching of God’s word—were taken away in an instant. Sanctuaries, crowds, and pews were replaced by screens, couches, and pajamas. Initially, most of us scrambled to livestream our Sunday service (with varying degrees of success). And as weeks turned into months, people started asking questions.

Do the benefits of gathering together really outweigh the conveniences of staying home? Is livestreaming here to stay? Is “remote attendance” the new normal for church services? In a word, no. And it never will be. Ever since God spoke to the Israelites out of the cloud and fire at Mt. Sinai (Exod. 19:16-18), he has been calling his people to gather physically in one place to hear his Word, celebrate his saving acts, sing his praises, and enjoy his presence. The pandemic may not yet be over, particularly in certain parts of the world, so some churches may deem it wise to wait to gather as normal. Still, gathering is the heartbeat of God’s people, and we should pray for the day to come soon when all churches can meet safely. As we remind our people of the glories of gathering together again, here are at least five reasons to highlight.

EXALTATION EDIFICATION

EXHORTATION 66

When I sing to the Lord alone it might be no less sincere and passionate as when I sing with my church. But hearing those around me sing makes me realize God is much bigger than whatever he happens to be doing in my life. That’s one reason King David often said things like, “I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you” (Ps. 35:18). My personal times of Bible reading, prayer, and worship in song can never replace what I do every Sunday with the church. That’s because we’re living stones, not random bricks, being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (1 Pet. 2:4; Eph. 2:22). On Sundays, the loud praises of those around me remind me I’m not alone in my struggles and that God is supremely worthy of my trust. I benefit from spiritual gifts like administration, mercy, leadership, and teaching. At the same time, God uses my unique gifts to build up those around me. I can’t do this on my own. You can’t either. Why not forgo the Sunday service and use that time to bless our neighborhoods, feed the poor, and share the gospel? Because corporate worship is meant to fuel and direct the way we serve others for the glory of God. We meet to stir up “one another to love and good works” (Heb. 10:25). Each time we gather, God realigns our priorities, refocuses our hearts on what is ultimate, and then sends us out into the world as his ambassadors.

ENCOUNTER

EVANGELISM BRINGING IT HOME

It’s no coincidence that in Ephesians 5, Paul connects singing with being filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18–19). Nor is it surprising that in 1 Corinthians 14:26–33, singing finds a home among many other gifts that the Spirit manifests in our midst. What a privilege and delight to encounter the presence of God when the church gathers. God loves to reveal himself when his people are next to each other, lifting their hearts and voices in praise to him. Even in times of social distancing, we can share the good news of the gospel with friends and neighbors. What we can’t do is bring them to a meeting where they see others reflecting the same humility, joy, and passion for Christ they see in us. Corporate worship gives non-Christians a broader and better picture of what Jesus looks like (1 Cor. 14:24-25). Leaders in the church have the privilege of reminding our congregations of these truths. Of course, many won’t need any reminders as they’ve been starving for fellowship all year! But we might need to encourage others who have grown accustomed to the oxymoron known as “solo church.” Here are some ways we can motivate them: Make provision in your services for those with legitimate health concerns. Highlight congregational participation each Sunday through testimonies, Scripture readings, prayers, etc. Teach on the priority, privilege, and blessing of meeting with the saints. If you decide to continue a livestream (and I’d even encourage you to consider ending it!), teach your church members who are able to attend that the stream isn’t really meant for them. Sundays are for gathering – not watching. Throughout the centuries, churches have been unable to meet due to persecution, geography, pandemics, or other limitations. God wasn’t worried then, and he’s not worried now. His plans will not be thwarted or undone. Because God made the church to gather. And one day, for one last time, Jesus will return to gather his people from every tribe, language, people, and nation to worship him forever (Rev. 7:9–10). Until then, let’s take full advantage of every opportunity God gives us to get ready.

SINGING OF THE STEADFAST SAVIOR

THE LOVE OF CHRIST IN A MOMENT OF BROKENNESS JIM THOMAS

For most of us, the last year has been a surreal year of church ministry. Covid-19 is not the first or even the worst pandemic in human history. But it is the one we have had to struggle through; the one that took some of our loved ones; the one that shut so many of our church doors for a time, and closed some of them permanently. The impact has been ubiquitous and many analysts predicted that whenever we re-opened, every church would be like a start-up church again. The pandemic has reminded us that humankind is fragile. A virus too small to see with the naked eye has brought nations and economies to their knees. Through it all, many congregations wondered how they would survive. What was God up to? What should be our response as local church leaders? At The Village Chapel, we prayed that God would transform us and pour His glory through these struggles. We prayed that God would lead us beyond survival and to revival. We prayed that we would be shaped more by leaning deeper into Christ and reminding ourselves of the greater realities of the Gospel than we were by the unavoidable acrimony of a contentious election year or the suffering we were experiencing because of the pandemic. We realized this season would mean we would be forced to navigate a great deal of turbulence and experience a pruning back of sorts. Through it all, we were reminded that while the road to revival is at times arduous, it always leads us back to Jesus. And that is always a good thing. Why? Because Jesus is the bread of life, the light of the world and the doorway to God’s salvation. He is the Good Shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth and the life. He is the ultimate and unique Savior and Redeemer of the world! As we see in Revelation 5, he is the only one able to open the scroll and bring about the end of this age, because he is the Lamb who was slain to ransom God’s people. That means that no virus, no pandemic, and no contentious year can thwart his power and purposes. And yet, this mighty Lord of history is also full of mercy and gentleness. We see his love on full display in Matthew 8:1-17. There we read that Jesus healed an outcast, an outsider, and an obsolete (someone who may have felt that their life was useless). Jesus lovingly embraced and healed a diseased leper. Jesus responded with generosity to the request of a Gentile Centurion who asked for healing on behalf of his beloved sick servant. And Jesus restored Peter’s mother-in-law to health—an older woman who lay sick in bed. The compassion of Christ is love in motion towards those on the margins, those in need of hope. Jesus did not turn anyone away nor did he turn away himself; he met each of them right at their point of need. It is the presence and power of Christ that made the difference in each of these cases. It is the presence and power of Christ among us that can shatter the darkness and despair of this past year. And this is why we feel so compelled to sing!

78

Our collective voices may have been isolated, muffled, and muted in some ways, but as we gather for Sing! 2021 our hearts are bursting with irrepressible ardor. We long to sing, even after the pain of the previous year, because Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We may still have questions and uncertainty. We may still long for healing for the wounds we have felt in the past year. But we bring these yearnings to Christ. We have tasted and we have seen that he is good. He displayed his presence and power, most completely, in the cross and the empty tomb. Since Christ is risen, we know that no power of hell and no fear of man can ever pluck us from his hand. So, no matter where you have come from or what you have had to endure, as we collect ourselves from every corner of the globe, whether you are joining us here in Nashville or online, let us lift up our hearts. With full-throated, Christ-centered worship, may the Lord release a mighty river of praise and glory flowing through each and every song we sing together. And may the Lord be enthroned upon the praises of His people. Jim Thomas is the Senior Pastor at The Village Chapel, Nashville, TN, celebrating 20 years as a worshiping community. Jim has the honor of being a local church pastor in a congregation overflowing with creatives in one of the fastest growing cities in North America. Jim and his wife of 43 years, Kim, share deep connections with Sing! Conference and Getty Music as the Gettys and about half the Getty band attend TVC.

This year’s theme will focus on how the great hymns of the faith help our children think Biblically about the difficult issues facing them such as life, death, eternity, and hope in Christ during unsettling times. This special post-conference session will be broadcast at 5:00pm CT on Thursday, September 16 and remain available to view afterwards on-demand at singglobal.com.

SINGING THE LORD’S SONG IN A STRANGE LAND

CONRAD MBEWE

WHY MARGINALIZATION BRINGS OPPORTUNITY FOR THE GREAT COMMISSION When Paul and Silas found themselves in prison in Philippi, they could have easily held a pity party. What wrong had they done? Where was God in the midst of their trials? Was this not a victory on the part of God’s enemies? Many such questions could have filled their minds. Yet the Bible tells us a different story: “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25). No pity party here. Instead, these men were praising God in the worst of circumstances. In due season, this witness of singing amidst suffering led to the conversion of the jailer and his family. The scene of Paul and Silas singing to the Lord in the innermost prison, with their feet fastened to stocks, reminds us of the time the Israelites were asked to sing songs to their God while they were in captivity: “By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion. On the willows there we hung up our lyres. For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion!’ How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a foreign land?” (Psalm 137:1–4). For God’s people, songs of joy made a lot more sense when they were approaching the Lord’s house with tambourine and dancing. The songs of Zion were songs of victory, yet they were in captivity and the temple lay in ruins. They could not sing with joy in their current state. Fast forward to Paul and Silas several centuries later. We find a totally different story there. Now, the exile in Babylon is over. The promised Messiah has come. Jesus laid down his life for our salvation and conquered the grave. No wonder these two men gladly sing of their hope in Christ even though they were sojourners and strangers, awaiting their true home. It has been that way right across the ages since Pentecost. The Christian church has been a singing people even while marginalized and persecuted by the world. How can Christians express such joy in song when they are foreigners in this strange land? Part of the answer is found in the words written to the Hebrew believers in Hebrews 10:34, “For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.” The reality of our citizenship in heaven motivates us to sing.

92

Many years after Paul’s experience in the Philippian prison, he wrote a letter to the church in Ephesus. He wrote it from prison. Again, Paul was not feeling sorry for himself while in that prison. Instead, he opened the letter with probably the longest sentence in the whole of the New Testament (Ephesians 1:3–14). It was full of praise to the triune God for his election, love, predestination, adoption, redemption, pardon, indwelling, and ultimate glorification, based solely on divine grace. None of these spiritual blessings is dependent on outward circumstances. They are all permanently secured “in Christ.” Therefore, no matter how fierce the opposition we face in this life, our hymns of praise will not be silenced. When we consider all the many blessings listed in Ephesians 1, how can we keep from singing! In God’s surprising wisdom, marginalization offers a wonderful opportunity for witness. The world and the devil will try to thwart our attempts to testify about Christ. And yet, by God’s grace, the singing of the church turns those feeble efforts upside down. By continuing to praise the wonders of our Lord even when this world rejects us, we demonstrate the supernatural source for our hope. We express our love for the God who has loved us with “love divine, all loves excelling.” As we sing, the promises of God’s faithfulness in our hymns help us to endure amidst opposition. This is especially the case when the spiritual songs are saturated with deep theological truth. Thus, the hope of the church militant is rekindled amidst a hostile world. And, as believers sing, we beckon the world to hear the call: “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8). Conrad Mbewe has served as pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church since 1987. He is a graduate of the University of Zambia, the Cape Town Baptist Seminary, and the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Missions. He is the founding Chancellor of the African Christian University. He is a blogger and an author. His latest book is God’s Design for the Church (Crossway, 2020). He is also the editor of the Reformation Zambia magazine. He is married to Felistas and they have 6 adult children, and 4 grandchildren.

PraiseCharts is your go-to source for praise and worship sheet music and tracks and features a large, online sheet music catalog of popular praise and worship songs offering lyrics, chords, vocal chart arrangements, orchestrations, plus multitracks and patches, all ready to download and play. Go into services feeling confident in the song resources at hand, knowing the band will sound great, and you will make the most of your limited time and budget. Explore these excellent church music resources at www.praisecharts.com. World News Group produces sound journalism, grounded in facts and biblical truth. Through print magazines, online articles, and podcast programs, our trained journalists report on current events both global and national so that readers and listeners can see how God is at work in the world, no matter the headlines.
