The Global Miller blog is an online offshoot of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine. While the bi-monthly magazine covers milling technology issues in-depth, the Global Miller takes a lighter approach. Our columnists have a keen eye for the most interesting, relevant and (let’s face it) bizarre milling stories from across the world. Each weekday we scour the internet for top-notch news and package it for your perusal in one neat daily digest. The Global Millers are also massive fans of industry events and shows and can often be found out on the road. Here they share stories (and photos) from their travels and, being unable to keep a secret, share details of upcoming events. But the Global Miller is your space too; feel free to comment and share your views.

Leading Israeli agriculture company AGRIGO recently completed the establishment of an integrated pig farm in Belarus, a complex project with an investment scope of €17 million.

The project is a full integration which contains a farm of 1,200 sows that comprises all stages of pig breeding and fattening, a water treatment system for the treatment of wastewater and compost production, as well as a feed mill that provides feed for the integrated farm and all the adjusted formulas to the different ages and growing stages of the pigs. Full news available here... Speaking at a meeting organised by the East African Grain Council (EAGC) on Friday, Patricia Ejalu, deputy executive director, Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), announced that the East African Community (EAC) countries are to come up with harmonized grain standards to easily promote cross border trade in the region. “What we want are safety measures that all countries have to follow. We are going to meet and come up with general standards. We want to promote easy trade among our farmers and companies,” she said Full news available here... Specialist agricultural and business firm NWF, Cheshire, UK recently announced it has acquired Staffordshire based animal feed manufacturer SC Feeds in a UK£6.75m deal. 02/12/13: New HGCA wheat list offers greater choice to growers

News courtesy of the HGCA, the cereals and oilseeds division of the agriculture and horticulture development board (AHDB). New varieties on the 2014/15 HGCA Recommended Lists will help growers target specific markets and assist with pest and disease control. In total, 25 varieties have been added to the HGCA Recommended Lists, while 23 varieties have been removed. “The new varieties added to the Lists push yields forward but care has been taken to provide a good choice for growers looking for varieties with specific agronomic characteristics which can help maximise the potential of their farm,” says Dr Simon Oxley, HGCA, who manages the Recommended Lists. “Processors should also welcome one or two good new varieties for all the main markets,” he adds. An important change to the HGCA Wheat List this year is the testing of Group 1 bread-making wheats. Millers’ organisation nabim will now give new bread making wheat varieties a provisional nabim Group 1 rating (P) when each year’s Lists are published in December. This will be followed by testing of commercial quantities which will confirm the provisional Group 1 status. Final Group 1 classifications will be published in April each year. For more information, visit nabim’s website here.

16/12/13: Event: Livestock Myanmar 2014 Expo Highlighting opportunities for Asia’s next rising star

Analysis • Automation Products, Inc.

Myanmar has been described by the International Monetary Fund as “Asia’s next rising star”. It is strategically located for export markets, straddling the border between South Asia, Southeast Asia and China – home to more than 3.6 billion consumers. Furthermore, it is endowed with abundant natural resources including ample untapped arable land, oil and gas reserves, water, and corn – the major ingredient for livestock feed. To help all interested stakeholders to better understand the potential opportunities in Myanmar, particularly with the coming ASEAN Economic Community in 2015, Livestock Myanmar 2014 Expo - Myanmar’s first official feed, livestock & meat industry show will take place next year. What will Livestock Myanmar include? The expo is hosted by the Myanmar Livestock Federation and organised by global marketing and communications service UBM. According to Mr. M. Gandhi, managing director, UBM ASEAN Business, “the Expo will address changes and opportunities in the animal protein sectors, major issues and future trends, including regulations, sustainability, health and productivity. Products, solutions and know-how from leading ASEAN agribusiness companies will be showcased. We sincerely thank the Myanmar Livestock Federation and Ministry of Agriculture for their support and are confident that the Expo will foster valuable partnerships between Myanmar companies and international enterprises. A comprehensive series of free and informative seminars and conferences, featuring renowned local and international speakers will be a highlight of the show.”

The expo will also feature the Myanmar Livestock Federation’s 14th Annual Meeting. “We are expecting more than 500 members to attend” commented Dr. Mya Han, chairman Myanmar Livestock Federation. “As Myanmar’s peak livestock organisation we have more than 13,000 members representing all states and divisions. The Federation covers the entire livestock industry with stakeholders including farmers, breeders, hatcheries, feed millers, domestic distributors of feed, animal health and feed additives and equipment, and traders involved in the export and import of animals and animal products. Our 14th Annual Meeting will include presentations from the seven states on the challenges of livestock production in their region.” Myanmar has a wealth of natural resources that could support products from farm to fork and create business opportunities to share knowledge and technology and create partnerships to fastrack the development of the local feed, livestock and meat industries, and contribute to Myanmar’s economic growth and prosperity. Livestock Myanmar is being jointly held with FPP-Myanmar - a one-stop event for food from farm to fork. The shows will take place under one roof, offering gateway to the quality, efficiency and sustainability of the food value chain. Because food production starts on the farm, livestock management is a huge factor in food quality and safety. It is hoped this partnership will add to the practical appeal of both shows. Dr. Khin Zaw, Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department deputy general director said the government was pleased to strongly support Livestock Myanmar 2014 Expo and thanked UBM and all participants for contributing to the ongoing development of Myanmar’s livestock and allied industries. “Being a comprehensive and international trade show that covers the entire value chain from farm to fork, it is the ideal platform to stimulate interest in business opportunities and technology transfer in Myanmar. We encourage cooperation and investment to contribute to accelerating our economic and social development. Myanmar has the potential to become a regional force in agriculture – the best is yet to come” he said. When/where is Livestock Myanmar? FEFANA and the Association of Manufacturers and Formulators of Enzyme Products (AMFEP) have recently responded to the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) public consultation on the updated safety guidance on the assessment of the toxigenic potential of Bacillus (a type of bacteria that produces toxins) species used in animal nutrition. The Bacillus species have been widely used for decades as microbial feed additives (probiotics and silage inoculant) and as production organisms for enzymes and other fermentation products for feed and food use.

silos

However FEFANA and AMFEP have strong concerns about the approach used by EFSA in their new draft Bacillus guidance document. EFSA questions the safety of Bacillus strains with an established, long history of safe use, based on their potential to produce lipopeptides. Recent literature shows that the traditional Japanese food and health product natto contains strong lipopeptide-producing Bacillus spp.

The feed additive and enzyme industry welcome EFSA’s wish to secure safety and harmonise the safety assessment criteria, based on scientific sound methods. livestock

THE GLOBAL MILLER | December 2013

Natto has been consumed without any adverse effects upon daily intake for centuries in Asia. It is also known from the scientific literature cited by EFSA that toxic effects seen in in vitro cell tests is not related to an in vivo toxicity. Therefore EFSA’s concern about lipopeptides is most likely unfounded. As there is no international recognised in vitro assay developed for measurement of lipopeptides, EFSA suggests using assays developed for other purposes. We believe that these assays may lead to wrong conclusions on the potential risk of Bacillus strains and the present test may leave some uncertainties on how they should be performed and interpreted. This could impact the already authorised additives with known effect as well as limiting the development of new products based on Bacillus strains. View EFSA’s guidance document here...

18/12/13: Growers show interest in HGCA Monitor Farms

News courtesy of HGCA, the cereals and oilseeds division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). HGCA’s recent call for new Monitor Farms has prompted an enthusiastic response from cereals and oilseeds growers. In November, HGCA began a search for a further eight Monitor Farms, to complement the six currently running in Scotland and Yorkshire. Over the following month HGCA Regional Managers received expressions of interest from more than 130 growers who were keen to participate in the programme. “The interest been phenomenal,” said Richard Laverick, who leads the HGCA Monitor Farm programme. “I am confident that we will be able to announce the eight new HGCA Monitor Farms early in 2014, and we will also be able to pencil in some of the next wave of Monitor Farms, to start later in 2014/2015. “The programme is not just about making individual Monitor Farms more profitable, but also sharing best practice with local growers and further afield. This has also been a great opportunity for HGCA Regional Managers to make contact with growers, and to explain how HGCA’s work could benefit their businesses. “The essence of an HGCA Monitor Farm is that it is farmer-led, dealing with real time on-farm issues to drive improvements in technical performance, bottom-line profitability and long-term sustainability. Through open days, specialist talks and updates on the HGCA website, the Monitor Farms reach out to growers in the local community and beyond, helping to build sector resilience.” Although the number of HGCA Monitor Farms is limited, HGCA is keen to stress that there are opportunities for growers to benefit from other initiatives such as Arable Business Groups, where local growers share business information to better manage their production costs and to improve their crop pricing and sales strategies.
