N Dear Reader,

ative New Yorker” – that was the name of the best-known song by the band Odyssey, which in the late ’70s became one of the anthems of the illustrious nightclub Studio 54. Studio 54 also represents the zenith of the disco era and is symbolic of an attitude towards life which many are, without doubt, still in search of today. The song is about a young woman who lives in New York City and travels across the metropolis on the subway or in a cab, in order to finally find herself, and love, through music

and dance. The place – today we would call it “the location” – epitomizes this feeling and way of experiencing the world. It is little wonder, then, that many nightclubs derive their names from a particular place. Studio 54 was located in a building in which music, movies and the famous Johnny Carson Show were produced. The club’s founders, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, the latter of whom is profiled in this edition, initially only wanted to call their club “Studio,” but then added the name of the street it was located on – West 54th. To this day, one of Germany’s most renowned nightclubs is called “P1,” in reference to its address in Munich, at Prinzregentenstraße 1. Beach clubs, too, are named after locations, among them one of the first and most famous: Club 55 on St Tropez’s Pampelonne beach, whose name indicates the year it opened, and hence refers to a particular place in time. “Buhne 16” on the northern shores of the municipality of Kampen on the island of Sylt, was named after the 16th of a large number of breakwaters which were built into the North Sea in order to protect the island’s precious sandy beaches from stormy seas. The most exciting locations usually also boast the best clubs in the world, whether in Ibiza, St. Barth, in New York City, on the Côte d’Azur, or – this year – on Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, where the soccer World Cup is sure to guarantee the biggest parties of the year. It is, therefore, no wonder that these locations usually denote the most desirable residential areas, in which the world’s most stunning pieces of residential real estate are located. Once again, you will also be able to find these in this edition of GG.

Ian Schrager, founder and creator of the legendary nightclub Studio 54, used to have spectacular theatrical backdrops made for his glamorous guests. To this day, he keeps surprising with his unusual boutique hotel concepts, frequently challenging the conventional industry. Zaha Hadid, the only woman in a male-dominated world of famous architects has made her mark with her organic designs, which are often conceived to be too avant-garde to build. The Stephens sisters have only just embarked on their career in jewelry design, but their label Anndra Neen has already attracted lots of attention and many fashionistas worldwide. The very personal journeys of all these individuals inspire because they have not followed a predetermined pattern. They might seem a bit chaotic, sometimes illogical even and do not follow a straight course. But in all their colorful and unusual demeanor, they lead to one place only: to success!

STEPHAN KOHL After completing vocational training as an engineering technician, Stephan Kohl left Germany and went abroad. In Italy, he worked in quality control and was in charge of customer deliveries for yacht builders. Then he switched gears and moved into active yacht brokerage and customer management at E & V. The experience he gained in the central Adriatic region and in Montenegro, a very promising new market, prompted Stephan Kohl to open a showroom with a yachting lounge in Tivat.

MIOK There’s no such thing as a “bad hair day” for this South Korean native. Miok’s motto: “Try out all kinds of styles, have fun – and feel amazing!” Throughout her career, the stylist has taken inspiration from Eugene Souleiman, editorial director at Vidal Sassoon. Miok moved from Long Island to live in New York, where she works with famous photographers and has done the hair of stars like Andie MacDowell and Alicia Keys. Her best job ever? Whatever she is is currently working on ….

TANJA PABELICK There’s not much Tanja Pabelick likes better than to set up her desk temporarily somewhere new. She is constantly drawn to wherever she sees new designs resulting from artisanal craftsmanship rather than from industrial production. Tanja earned her design degree in Laos and makes sure to travel to Southeast Asia at least once a year. Officially, she lives in Berlin, but she is also renting a small cottage in Dublin that she likes to withdraw to in order to write.

ASIA GEIGER A native of Poland, Asia Geiger worked as a model in England before she discovered, in Tokyo, how good she was at making people look great with just a little makeup and a new hairstyle. After 17 years as a make-up artist in L. A. she moved to New York, where she has been living for four years. In line with her motto “Beauty comes from within,” she gave us a tip for the summer: “Instead of foundation, apply some tinted moisturizer, a touch of rouge, lip gloss and waterproof mascara.”

Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub bounce great ideas off each other in their studio, and always work as a team. The Stuttgart-based designers consider their job akin to that of an actor: it is always about slipping into new roles. 1

You are very well known designers, among the most successful in Germany. You are sought-after internationally, too. What are the qualities necessary for this?

Successful double act: Markus Jehs (on the left) and Jürgen Laub met when they were still in college. In 1994 they founded the company Jehs + Laub in Stuttgart. Jürgen Laub: The question is how you define success. Does success mean earning large sums of money, being famous, or does it mean being happy? I cannot really say what accounts for our success. We are committed to making products that are not only stylish, but also useful to people. Products you can take pleasure in, and which do the job they were designed for, well. That is the foremost prerequisite, because a chair you cannot sit on is absolutely pointless. Markus Jehs: A designer has to be curious all the time, and we already learned to see the world diﬀerently when we were in college. To my mind, being a designer is primarily a question of attitude. You are not just a designer eight hours a day, you are a designer around the clock. This changes your perception and allows you to notice things which could be improved. What role does sustainability play in the designs you

Jürgen Laub: Sustainability is much more important to us than any kind of cult surrounding design. Things should have longevity. Ideally, the products are so good that I

will be able to pass them on to my children, who will enjoy using them because they will still be fully functional and not outdated visually. “Elm” is a new sofa you have just designed for Cor. What is special about it?

Markus Jehs: We are well known for the high-quality woodwork we produce, but since the wooden structure of the sofa is on the inside, it is hidden from view. With “Elm” we reversed this principle, removed the cover and made the framework visible. Hiding everything connected to the structure under a leathery surface is an idea that was developed by Charles Eames – the so-called elephant design. A chair is the complete opposite of this approach. It is structured like an insect: you can see every joint. How would you describe your style? Jürgen Laub: That is diﬃcult for us to say. Maybe our style is really more of an attitude, one which is reflected in the products we design. When we are approached by companies who we think will not be a fit for us, we turn down the job. Decisions like these are based on life experience, on gut feeling. It is like meeting a woman: either the chemistry is right or it isn’t. And in the 10 latter case it’s better not to get involved . At the time, there was a sort of war going on in New York City, which the press was stoking up – between Donald Trump, who was one of the new generation of hoteliers, and Harry Helmsley, who represented the old guard. I stood in the middle and thought: Boy, I should do that! back then?

What you did then was completely “out of the box” – nobody had ever thought of creating anything like boutique hotels.

I once recreated Studio 54 for one night for a friend of mine, and took along my daughters. They are 19, 17, 16 and 15, and they loved it! That was when I thought maybe it’s time for real dance clubs again. That’s why I will open some in our hotels. alive”?

It sounds like you get bored easily, as soon as you find out that an idea is working. Do you then quickly have to find another challenge?

Of course! When I started off, hotels were generic and very similar to each other. Everything was based on a mass-market model. People thought: OK – this works. Let’s roll the concept out from New York and take it to London, Paris and California. But that’s not how it works. I’m not interested in going to Paris only to eat at McDonald’s. I always try to create something innovative and provocative. That’s how I came to take over the Gramercy Park Hotel that was more or less bankrupt at the time. It was not my personal style, but we wanted to do something different. Maybe it was more of an intellectual effort.

Yes, in my beautiful apartment with all my kids. One day I woke up and thought that I always invest all my energy into my work in these great hotels, never into my own place. Some of my friends already had really spectacular apartments back then, so I thought I needed to create a nice home, too. I managed to create a beautiful apartment, with some help from Christian Liaigre and John Pawson. Do you collect art? I like Anish Kapoor, Andy Warhol, Julian Schnabel and all those artists from the ’80s. I also have a couple of Picasso drawings. But I am not one of those captains of industry who collects art just to show off their success. If I see something I love, I buy it. Do you primarily collect artists that you know personally? Yes, exactly. Some of them even gave me pieces of art as presents. Andy Warhol, for example, used to come to Studio 54 and give me things all the time. Thank God, I saved them... (laughs). City?

Schrager’s Hotels 1984 – THE MORGANS The boutique hotel on New York’s Madison Avenue was the first in the Morgans Hotel Group. Andrée Putman redesigned the building, constructed in 1927, using checkered carpets to create a club feel.

1994 – THE DELANO Built in 1947, the art deco style Delano hotel today features on the list of “America’s Favorite Architecture.” Philippe Starck revamped the classic building in Miami Beach in white with dashes of color.

2000 – THE HUDSON Philippe Starck strikes again – this time near Central Park. The bar of the hotel with its signature yellow glass floor provides the perfect backdrop for New York City-based TV shows such as Gossip Girl and Sex & The City.

2000 – THE SANDERSON Philippe Starck’s style transformed this 1960s building in London’s West End – cool! On the ceiling above each bed, there is a reproduction of the picture “The Cloud” by Swedish painter Prinz Eugen.

1988 – THE ROYALTON Located near Times Square and designed by Philippe Starck in 1988, the hotel was revamped once more in 2007. The attractive centerpiece of the building is the lobby with its warm color scheme.

1996 – THE CLIFT Now 101 years old, the Clift in San Francisco was substantially reimagined by Philippe Starck, who took care to preserve the legendary “Redwood Room” in all its wood-paneled glory.

Set the Sails

of hundreds of taut sails cloaks the King Fahd National Library in Riyadh, and elegantly plays with the visual aspects of concealing and revealing. The squareshaped new building designed by Dortmund-based architecture firm Gerber Architekten integrates the library’s old 1980s structure in an unusual way: the cruciform building, which is topped by a dome, is hidden inside, behind the light-weight frontage. The graceful steel cable construction was inspired by the region’s tent designs and fabric folding screens. It allows views into and out of the building, and acts as a sunshade while affording a maximum of light and transparency. “Our aim as architects is to create a built environment which touches people and inspires a longing in them. An environment that they like to frequent and enjoy being in,” says Eckhard Gerber. “We would like to add to the attractiveness of the urban landscape with our buildings. They are beautiful in their simplicity, but also offer an exciting use of space.” The new King Fahd National Library is located right in the middle of a city park and acts as a focal point for an area in the prestigious Olaya business disUA trict, whose prominence is set to further increase in the next few years.
