WELCOME
P
eople come for the winter and stay for the summer. This is a phrase the inhabitants of premier ski towns know all too well. It’s a mantra that has only magnified and manifested in the last two years. Never before has the ski town experience held greater allure — all year long.
While skiing may be the “sizzle” and the initial attraction that brings millions of people into the hearts of resort communities, ski-goers then find themselves immersed in an international social scene, worldclass shopping and a laid-back vibe that they want to experience more regularly than just a few weeks of the year. Add the fact that many of these locations boast award-winning golf courses, hiking trails, fly fishing and cultural amenities. Locations such as Park City, Utah, are seeing the summer rental market actually exceed its winter market. With Engel & Völkers shops in some of the most renowned ski locations not only in the Americas, but around the globe, our clients are attracted to and benefit from the unique and collaborative ski culture our brand lives through our real estate advisors. Along with that passion come the personalities and properties that we are proud to represent. Every ski town has its own unique charm, but they all kindle the special bonds and feelings that surround the sport of skiing. You never forget where you learned to ski, the time spent with family and friends, the simple and uninterrupted conversations you had on the chair lift or nestled in the lodge. There is a desire to pass down those experiences to generations to come — a simple yet priceless luxury. With an influx of primary residents, change is on the horizon as these real estate havens work to sustain their communities and adapt their infrastructure to accommodate new needs associated with growth. In areas where location is everything, there is a cost associated with resort town living, and there’s no question: The allure will remain. Sincerely,
Anthony Hitt

INTERVIEW
The mountains are calling
The real estate market in ski areas is booming. Rob Boyd, Olympic alpine skier and Engel & Völkers advisor in Whistler, Canada, explains why. The purchase prices for real estate in ski areas in Europe are climbing by double-digit percentages. Prices are also rising in the U.S. and Canada. What’s fueling this development? Whistler has seen an incredible upswing in home purchases. There have never been so few active listings on the sales market as there are currently, and demand continues to rise. With the ongoing pandemic, people have taken a step back from their busy city lives and are now realizing that they can be just as productive working from a chalet in the mountains. No wonder: You step out the door for some fresh air on skis, bike or on foot, invigorate your mind and when you return, you get more done than before.
same beauty that drew us here decades ago is now drawing more newcomers than ever. There’s a whole new buzz in town.
Why are ski areas like Whistler suitable as a year-round residence? Whistler has all the infrastructure you need. From highspeed communications to high-end restaurants and rental shops for skis, snowboards or electric bikes. It has outstanding medical clinics, a heliport and, thanks to the 2010 Olympics, there’s an international airport only a two-hour drive away on a fantastic new highway. Many people frequented the lakes, bike parks and provincial parks in and around Whistler this past summer. The
You live in Whistler, can look back on a World Cup ski racing career and have coached ski champions at the Whistler Mountain Ski Club. How does this experience benefit you as a real estate advisor? The same tools are easily adapted to real estate: communication, critical thinking, reflection and problem solving. And the leap of faith you need as an elite athlete could be compared to saying “yes” to investing in a new home. People trusted in my decisions as a racer, then as a coach; now they trust me as a real estate advisor.

INTERVIEW: CHRISTINA LIBUDA
Whistler has been ranked the most exclusive ski area in Canada, while Aspen tops the list in the U.S. Which ski areas do you think are still undervalued? There are a few right here in British Columbia: Red Mountain in Rossland shows promise with challenging mountains and a vibrant mountain culture. Then there’s the mid-mountain village Silver Star in Vernon – my home mountain before moving to Whistler. Lastly, Smithers is also worth exploring.

Snow covers the wooded expanses of the Rocky Mountains like a delicate layer of icing sugar. The forest runs are especially popular.

American Powder
For many winter sports fans, skiing in the Rocky Mountains is the dream. And renowned resorts like Aspen, Vail and Park City are by no means the only ski hotspots in North America. Canada’s slopes are just as popular with the international ski community. TEXT: Christina Libuda PHOTOS: Aerin Lauder, The Little Nell, Christy Ferer

Each ski resort has a charm of its own, yet they all set the scene for unforgettable memories.
I
t is said that the greatest snow on earth can be found in Utah. Known as powder, the crystal-like snowflakes here are incredibly dry, light and fluffy. And it gets better: The high altitude of the ski resorts guarantees excellent snow conditions well into spring.
Aspen’s fascinating past and legendary status is documented in the exclusive coffee table book “Aspen Style”. Assouline, $95.
This is also true of Park City, where a handful of Hollywood stars own homes. The town first sprung up on the map in the 19th century, when the silver mines attracted adventurers and emigrants from Europe. Much later, in the 1960s, the first ski slopes were created up in the forests, starting close to the top of the almost 10,000 ft mountain peaks. Park City soon evolved into a first-class resort. A ski lift transports skiers directly from the main shopping thoroughfare, Main Street, up to the slopes. 155 miles of pistes await, making it the largest ski region in North America. Unlike the Alps with its rugged peaks and steep runs, the terrain here has more gradual inclines, with undulating hillsides and slopes lined by dense forest. The snow in Aspen is known as “Champagne Powder”. Eight inches of fresh snow fall here on a typical winter night. One of the wealthiest cities in the US, Aspen attracts a wide range of visitors. Originally a mining community during the Colorado Silver Boom, it has long grown into a travel destination and place of residence for the international elite. A third of all US private jets are said to regularly land at the small airport here in the mountains of Colorado. There is a celebrity vibe and cosmopolitan feel in the air, yet this remains an idyllic place. Aspen Mountain, or “Ajax” as the locals call it, is famous for its wooded downhill runs. Advanced skiers get to push their limits too, on the steeper routes and mogul slopes. Every ski resort has a distinct character of its own. Vail, for instance, just a two-hour drive from Denver, Colorado, combines urban life with outdoor fun on the slopes. In the heart of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 8,150 ft, timeless elegance is met with a lifestyle reminiscent of the Old West. The town is closed off to cars, and has 250 shops. Vail Ski Resort is one of the country’s largest, with some 145 miles of slopes and 25 lifts. Those looking for off-piste action will be in their element in southwestern Colorado, in the vast deep-snow terrain of Telluride. 41 percent of the 127 slopes here are black runs. The piste classifications are more varied elsewhere in Colorado, like in the Beaver Creek Resort, the largest US winter sports resort in the Vail Valley. It lies at an altitude of over 11,000 ft, in the quieter part of the
9
valley, and draws families and professionals alike with its 146 ski runs. The centerpiece is “Birds Of Prey”, the downhill ski course designed for the World Ski Championships in 1999. The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming’s largest ski area, is much more rugged by comparison. “Steep and deep” is the name of the game here. The region offers ample terrain for free-riders, with its notorious Rendezvous Mountain and the Casper Bowl, a 180-degree cirque of cliff-littered chutes. Après-ski also awaits in abundance in the small town of Jackson, with many bars styled in an original Wild West theme. The first real winter sports resort to emerge in the US was Sun Valley in Idaho, established in the late 1930s. Chairlifts were first installed at Dollar Mountain. The area’s central peak, Bald Mountain, is close to the town of Ketchum at 9,150 ft. A mix of rustic skiing and laid-back Californian living can be found in Lake Tahoe. The local ski resort, known as Heavenly and one of the highest in North America at 10,000 ft, traverses the Nevada-California border. Also in the Golden State is the Truckee region, which boasts eight ski areas including the Northstar California Resort and Tahoe Donner. According to statistics from the National Ski Areas Association, New York is the state with the most ski areas in the US – with 51 in total. One is Lake Placid, a world-famous epicenter of winter sports. The Winter Olympics were held here both in 1932 and 1980. The small town in the Adirondack Mountains is a popular destination in all seasons. The Canadian town of Whistler has a slightly more European feel. Some 60 years ago, four businessmen laid the foundations in this remote corner of British Columbia for what would become the largest ski resort in North America. Whistler Mountain owes its name to the whistling sounds of marmots who inhabit this terrain. Regarded as the Canadian equivalent to Aspen, Whistler attracts millions of tourists annually. Chic accommodations, restaurants and shops are found just next to the ski lifts, while over 8,100 acres of slopes offer challenges to skiers of every ability. There are also several ski resorts in the region around Kamloops. Less than 40 miles to the northeast is Sun Peaks Resort, British Columbia’s second largest ski area. Harper Mountain is just 15 miles away. Meanwhile, Mount Norquay in Banff is yet another winter sports paradise. Reaching an altitude of 7,000 ft, it ranks among the 15 highest ski areas in Canada. Another region more than worthy of mention is Mont-Tremblant in Québec. Like other ski resorts around the world, this cozy little town and its surrounding countryside have grown into a popular year-round destination. Visitors flock both for the guaranteed snowfall in winter and the glorious mountain weather in the summertime.
