F Dear Reader,
rom the South of France to New York City – the demand for exclusive real estate in the world’s metropolises and most sought-after locations for second homes remains undiminished. Consequently, top real estate continues to fetch record prices in the international property market. An increasing number of people, especially affluent buyers from Eastern Europe, Asia and South America, are looking for high-value properties as secure capital investments. They are on the lookout for extraordinary properties in top locations. For our ranking of the world’s most exclusive resi-
dential areas we surveyed the most expensive streets, and once again found that top prices are being paid in vibrant metropolises, popular Mediterranean destinations, sought-after ski resorts and on the east and west coasts of the United States. The Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula occupies the top spot. Here, a villa with roughly 600 square meters of residential space was sold for 200,000 euros per square meter. Our clients appreciate the French Riviera because of its unique natural environment boasting numerous bays, and because of its Belle Époque elegance. Hong Kong remains one of the world’s priciest metropolises. Penthouses in the new Twelve Peaks development in the city’s The Peak neighborhood on Hong Kong Island, generated prices of 190,000 euros per square meter. On the East Coast of the U.S., buyers are prepared to pay top dollar, for example in the famous Hamptons on Long Island. An estate in East Hampton with a spacious residential building and a private lake was sold for roughly 169,000 euros per square meter. In London, a price of more than 150,000 euros per square meter was recorded for a duplex penthouse in the One Hyde Park residential complex. This is closely followed by New York City, which registered roughly 121,000 euros per square meter, while sophisticated Gstaad in Switzerland remains the most expensive ski resort in the world. Here, prices of 50,000 euros per square meter for first-class chalets are no rarity. The vacation island of Mallorca reported prices of up to 27,000 euros per square meter. Such prices demonstrate clearly that our clients are in search of unique properties which meet the highest standards of location, luxuriousness and amenities. I, myself, have fulfilled one of my life’s dreams by purchasing a small, historic carriage house in one of Hamburg’s western suburbs as my first home, and a 500-year-old finca in Mallorca as my second. In this edition of GG, we once again help you get closer to finding your dream house or condo by showcasing a selection of the most beautiful real estate, across various price ranges and from around the world. Sincerely

WELCOME
Spring at Last! There is nothing better than spending some days in the Caribbean after a long gray winter. Stepping off the island hopper can make you feel like you have jumped straight into a box of colored paints – as if someone had switched on the lights and turned up the color intensity. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why trips to the Caribbean have become so popular in recent years. Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife Dee Ocleppo like to reenergize in their lovely vacation home on the island of Mustique (page 38). A few sea miles away the exclusive Eden Rock on St. Barths is regarded as one of the world’s top 100 hotels. Turn to page 20 to find out why. Marlies Verhoeven and Daisy Peat are two young professionals who came up with a fresh, new idea. They started the first international art club The Cultivist with events taking place in London and New York or elsewhere on this planet. On page 48 we explain why Eileen Gray’s designs are suddenly celebrating a comeback, and present the interior of the elegant penthouse (now for sale) atop Hamburg’s new Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Just like a refreshing boost of energy, or a colorful bouquet of fresh-cut tulips, we very much hope you will

High contrast
BERNARD TOUILLON The interplay of light and shadow is important for Bernard Touillon, in his private and in his professional life. His penchant for blackand-white contrasts led him to architectural photography; and some of his work features in our Eileen Gray story (page 48). Touillon splits his time between Paris and the Mediterranean.
Quick and relaxed
KATE MARTIN Kate’s technique for taking powerful portraits? “Create an atmosphere in which the protagonist feels at ease. And be quick.” Martin grew up in New Zealand, moved to London at 17, and now takes photographs for fashion and architecture magazines. She enjoyed the shoot at the Hilfigers’ residence (page 38).

INKEN BECKER Indispensible: The Hamburg native has been with the GG publishing house for 16 years. She manages its real estate advertisements, magazine distribution, billing and the GG license partner support. After graduating, she worked for a TV station for a year and then trained at E&V, before coming to GG. She likes to go jogging around the Alster Lake, dancing and golfing.
SANDRA GERING “Everything that Eileen Gray did was fantastic; she is one of my role models,” says Sandra Gering about the pioneering architect and designer. Gering is the founder and president of Friends of E.1027, a non-profit foundation that works to preserve and protect the villa conceived by Gray: “It is a unique architectural and design experiment.” Gering also supports young artists in her influential gallery in New York City.

On top of that, we deliver within one to two days and our packages are designed to delight. They arrive beautifully wrapped, with a bow and include several free samples. What’s your philosophy on using “green” products? LpvH: Here at Niche Beauty, our motto is that it is all in the mix. Of course we keep an eye on things like sustainably produced products and the use of high-quality ingredients. If something is good for the environment, it must be better for us, too. Chemistry mimics the natural world, but natural ingredients are not necessarily gentle. Some people even have allergic reactions to them. You have to test these things out for yourself. Sometimes you just want a face pack that will smooth out all your wrinkles for one evening … Can you let us in on some current trends? SvD: At the moment, berry red lips are all the rage. The important thing is to contrast them with some eye shadow; otherwise the overall look is somewhat unbalanced. Eyeliner is also big at the moment, not just in black, but in blue as well. Subtle glitter is back, too, for example in lipsticks that create metallic effects; and most importantly, so is lip-gloss. UA

Within just six months, The Cultivist has already attracted 400 members – despite the handsome annual fee of 2,700 euros. GG met Marlies Verhoeven for tea at Soho House in London. How do you explain your rapid rise to success? The art world is a sexy industry. We live in a time when a lot of things are overconsumed. Art remains one of the few things that enables you to stand out from the crowd. If you invite people to your house and there’s art hanging on the walls that you’ve got a personal connection with, that shows personality. My own and my husband’s parents are collectors from the Netherlands and Belgium. In the old days, when I went to art fairs or museums, I would go with my parents. You collected paintings by old masters and had to be able to understand the old symbols in order to appreciate the pictures properly. A lot of people don’t realize how complicated that can be, how much understanding and specialized know-how it takes. Personally, I still believe old masters are a much safer investment. But now that the art world is going for contemporary art in such a big way and today’s artists have acquired superstar status, things have changed entirely. After the art world had been veiled in secrecy for such a long time, this trend suddenly made it accessible to a much broader audience. And the fact that interest in art has become part of the zeitgeist rather than being restricted to experts and connoisseurs gave our idea impetus as well. How do you become a mem-

The iconic ‘Elbphilharmonie’ is the crowning glory of Hamburg’s HafenCity district. The former ‘Kaispeicher A’, an historic warehouse used to store cocoa, tea, coffee and tobacco as recently as the 1990s, formed the site for a collaboration of Europe’s top architects and designers: Herzog & de Meuron, Antonio Citterio and Kate Hume. The latter, a British designer based in Amsterdam, has furnished one of the luxury apartments with incredible results. Discover more over the page.

As early as 1978, the first Porsche Tennis Grand Prix took place in Stuttgart. Back then tennis complex owner Dieter Fischer approached Lars Schmidt, a member of the Porsche board at the time, about sponsoring the sporting event. Since 2002, Porsche has also been organizing the Grand Prix and is striving to make the tournament “a little better each year,” says Porsche Tennis Grand Prix tournament director Markus Günthardt. Since 2005, Günthardt has been in charge of organizing the tournament, which is steeped in tradition and takes place in the Porsche Arena. Angelique Kerber, who won the Australian Open this past January, putting her second in the WTA world rankings, won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in 2015. In 2016, the Porsche brand ambassador and player in the Porsche Team Germany is looking to defend her title against renowned opponents. Carpets bring warmth, comfort and character to a room. Those by CAP are absolute masterpieces with an exquisite elegance.
Wooden and stone floors may be very attractive to look at, but they don’t automatically make a home feel or look particularly homely. A carpet on the other hand can be a wonderful way of introducing structure to any room: a carpet is laid on the floor, on this carpet stands a sofa, next to the sofa a side table is placed and on it a lamp. The entire ensemble acts like an island in the room. There are many different ways of applying this principle of adapting a carpet to fit an interior space. Ulrike Broermann, owner of the Düsseldorf-based company CAP, combines classical elements found in oriental carpets with contemporary and minimalist influences in her designs. ugs are experiencing a renaissance.
The philosophy behind a carpet’s motif plays a key role for this interior designer, and one thing is also clear: a carpet is slow-growing. Row by row and centimetre for centimetre it develops, the pattern emerging gradually like the printed page from an inkjet printer. CAP carpets are made of 100 percent natural materials, 80 percent cotton and 20 percent pure wool. There is an anti-slip layer on the underside. The carpets, as robust as they are striking in their multiple designs, are produced in nine different sizes in Belgium. This “Made in Europe” pledge guarantees not only short delivery times but also quality of the highest standard. Learn more at www.carpets-plaids.com

BOOK TIP
Sixty pages, 26 objects and 26 captions – at first glance, it looks like there’s no more to it than that. After all, what could be more fun than when our logic is tricked by our sneaky imagination! So, look, listen and smile!
Living Photographs During World War I, American photographer Arthur Mole asked himself how many men were needed to ensure liberty. The “Human Statue of Liberty,” one of Mole’s living photographs that brought him international fame, required 18,000. f it’s spectacular architec-
ture you’re looking for, a Pritzker laureate is a good bet. French architect and urbanist Christian de Portzamparc, who won the prestigious award in 1994, is considered a genius at modeling and shaping his facades as if they were an arrangement of draped fabrics rather than a solid element of the architectural structure. The House of Dior, located in the stylish Gangnam shopping district of Seoul, Korea, is a vivid translation of Dior’s style that echoes the exquisite textiles and fashions of the Dior collections in the building’s envelope. For the facade, Portzamparc had twelve separate shells molded out of white fiberglass. They surround two sides of the building like billowing curtains, only opening occasionally to reveal glass-fronted apertures and an entrance. Inside, American interior designer Peter Marino has created a pastel-colored cosmos with monochrome tiled floors and mirrored walls where the French brand’s luxury goods are displayed amidst works of fine contemporary art and furniture. His inspiration for the interior came from Dior’s historic first boutique, the 1940s store on Avenue Montaigne in Paris. UA
