WELCOME

s the yachting industry becomes more dynamic, Engel & Völkers Yachting has expanded beyond Europe into the Americas. On both sides of the Atlantic we are seeing that a younger clientele is increasingly attracted to yachting. Ever more women are also pursuing a career in this field. At the helm of Engel & Völkers Yachting are Anissa Mediouni and Leeann Iacino, both playing major roles driving operations and expansion in Europe and the Americas respectively. Our cover story is dedicated to the motor yacht Altavita, a benchmark in luxury, elegance and true sophistication. Leni Mathews presents her yacht to us; she accommodates up to 12 guests in five beautifully appointed cabins. We also invite you to discover the Cyclades. These Greek islands are rich in history and among the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean. Charter Advisor Marina Donchenko gives advice on how to stay safe on board and Mark Evans, Managing Director of McConaghy Boats, talks about his experience in building yachts and the advantages of owning a yacht, especially in these times. A yachting vacation guarantees the utmost privacy. Clients who previously spent their holidays on board cruise ships or in luxury resorts may see private yacht charter as a safer alternative. Besides, with the wide range of amenities a yacht offers there is never a dull moment on board, making any vacation outstanding and unforgettable. We invite you now to let yourself get carried away with the spring edition of the GG Yachting magazine.

I

t is the dreams that move us. The longing for freedom and adventure, for independence and luxury. Cruising across the sea on an exclusive yacht comes very close to what we long for. Free from external constraints, you can explore unknown places and enjoy the sun, wind and waves with your family. Welcome aboard the superyacht Altavita, whose elegant ambience quickly makes you forget the stresses and strains of everyday life.

It took two years to develop the motor yacht Altavita. For the owner Leni Mathews, the interior design was a passion project.

Anchoring with a view of the famous Amalfi coast, from the aft deck one’s view wanders over to the picturesque houses built directly on the slope along the steep coastline. Later, perhaps a little detour to the incomparable island of Capri, the small town of Positano still shimmering in the sunlight. Tomorrow we’re off on a long trip to the Côte d’Azur, to St. Tropez and Monaco. Corsica is also within reach. The motor yacht Altavita will take you comfortably to locations in the Mediterranean that are worthy of a Hollywood movie. On board the superyacht, you can relax carefree with your family or closest friends, even during the coronavirus pandemic. “Yachting is really the best form of social distancing as it is mostly spent with close family and friends away from any crowds,” says Leni Mathews. “Although there are strict restrictions for travellers from some countries, clients from Europe still have the opportunity to charter the elegant yacht and its crew,” the owner of the Altavita continues. A tempting prospect, even if you look at the inner values of the Altavita. The 125foot yacht comes with a luxurious interior that leaves nothing to be desired. Elegant, contemporary design and the highest level of comfort in all areas, from the salon on the main deck to each of the generously proportioned cabins. It took two years to develop and build her, with all work carried out in close coordination between the owner and partners “Australia Superyachts” and the shipyard “Gulf Crafts” based in the United Arab Emirates. “The two teams guided and supported us through the whole build process. At times it was very difficult due to time zones, but

11

with patience on both sides we were delivered the yacht of our dreams which was such a rewarding experience.” Leni Mathews looks back with pride on the successful development process. “In the end, we were able to come up with a unique yacht that reflected our Australian values and outdoor lifestyle.” In the cabins, abundant daylight and light-coloured floors contrast with the dark wood fixtures. Leni Mathews reveals: “The most challenging part of the development process was choosing the interiors and finishes.” Beds, wardrobes and seating – each of the elements have been thought through in detail and executed with the utmost care. A special highlight is the Master Cabin, which extends across the entire width of the boat. On the main deck, generous upholstered landscapes welcome guests; elegance and comfort come together in an extraordinary way in the modern yet timeless design. In the dining room, up to twelve passengers can enjoy the excellent meals served by the dedicated crew. The outdoor areas are also generously proportioned. The sky lounge on the upper deck is the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner, and in the morning a yoga session starts the day. Whether at anchor or during the quiet ride of the two 1900 hp Caterpillar engines, the sun deck with Jacuzzi invites you to spend relaxing hours. For a change of pace, jump from the hydraulic swim platform at the stern into the cooling waters of the Mediterranean. Two jet skis and the tender boat allow individual trips and shore excursions even in remote bays. A gazebo, beach umbrellas and picnic set-up are on board for a carefree beach stay. Stand-up paddle boards, a wakeboard, kneeboard, and snorkelling gear for children and adults support the urge to move and spend some hours on and in the water. For Leni Mathews, the Altavita has made her wish for freedom come true. “We love to travel with our family and friends, and arriving at new locations by motor yacht is a truly special way to explore.” A fulfilled dream built on an intensive process that requires the owner’s full attention even after the Altavita is finished. “Do your homework on what is involved in running a superyacht. Including crew needs and ongoing running costs,” she recommends to those who, after their first charter trip, are fascinated by travelling on a superyacht and are toying with the idea of owning one of their own.

DESTINATIONS

The Cyclades

Whitewashed houses on arid hills and red rocky outcrops; bright blue skies and azure seas: a cruise around the islands of the Cyclades combines picture-perfect scenery with traditional Greek country living and a vibrant nightlife. TEXT: Hans Oberländer ILLUSTRATION: Mong Ting Zhu

THE BEST ADDRESSES Lavrio

1. Lavrio

Around 36 km from Athens Airport, the modern marina in Lavrio is the port of departure and destination for many (charter) cruises to the Cyclades. The 56 islands are scattered across an area of some 100 by 120 nautical miles. Marinas are limited in number. So you have to up anchor to avoid being gone with the wind – as the strong Etesian winds of the Aegean are not to be underestimated.

FINE DINING:

6. Paros

Melōdeion

The island has long ceased to be a wellkept secret, but it isn’t overcrowded either. Two quaint ports draw you in: Parikia, protected by reefs and rocks, and Naousa to the north. Fishing boats bob away in the harbour, while narrow alleyways lead you past whitewashed houses and little churches with bright blue domes.

Syros

7. Ios

SHOPPING:

In circa 1860, Ermoupoli laid claim to the most important port in the whole of Greece. Still to this day, neo-classical villas, the Apollo Theatre modelled on Milan’s La Scala, and marble-panelled squares characterise the town’s image. A stroll through the Vaporia quarter will take you back to an elegant bygone era.

Homer’s tomb is said to be on Ios. Most islanders are not concerned with this however: they are young and live for the nightlife. The island has two very different sides. Arriving during the day, the Chora will feel deserted. At sunset though it slowly comes alive. Then the whole place turns into an open-air disco. Followed by peace and quiet when, for a few hours, the beautiful beaches are empty.

3. Delos

8. Santorini

2. Syros

According to legend, the god Apollo was born on Delos. The entire island is now an archaeological treasure trove and World Heritage Site. Day visitors come to marvel at ancient monuments like the Terrace of the Lions, with its five imposing marble lions. At the foot of Kynthos Mountain stands the Temple of Isis: the goddess of good fortune, the sea and travel, charged with watching over this and all voyages.

4. Mykonos

The chances of spotting stars on the beaches or in the gourmet restaurants and clubs of Mykonos is extremely high. The marina is some 2.5 km from the picturesque town with its charming windmills and Little Venice district. The shopping, posing and people-watching to be done on Matoyianni Street are great fun!

5. Naxos

Naxos is the largest and most diverse island in the Cyclades. Peaceful rural living and high-spirited nightlife – both are possible here in the space of the same day. Leaving the endless beaches behind, the road inland leads through craggy limestone rocks, fertile valleys, abandoned monasteries and mountain villages like Apeiranthos, where it feels as though time has stood still.

Having undergone several major refits over recent years to nearly every aspect of her machinery, interior and exterior, she finds herself in immaculate condition and can attest to more unparalleled credentials than ever. Antara is listed exclusively with Engel & Völkers Yachting for sale, and is represented by Yacht Advisor Benjamin Barker. “In terms of enhancements to onboard luxury and enjoyment, she now boasts an extended flybridge for enjoying the sunshine in superb comfort, a large Jacuzzi with sun cushions for lounging, an aft swim platform for easy access to the sea for swimming, and an extensive collection of toys. Her technology and performance upgrades are equally comprehensive. The

multi-million-dollar overhaul has included a mechanical refit and completion of her 30-year ABS survey. She has never been in better shape,” reveals Benjamin Barker. A full list of all the upgrades is available upon request. Her entire main deck and dining area are bright and airy, with a contemporary feel complementing the classic flair of the rich honey-coloured teak wood of the walls, floors and fittings, finished in satin varnish. Antara can accommodate eight guests in four double en suite staterooms, with removable Pullman berths allowing for up to 10 guests in total if so desired. The master suite aft on the lower deck is full beam. All her staterooms and other interiors are now fitted with state-of-the-art entertainment and AV systems. “Antara treats those on board to exhilarating sailing, but also the utmost comfort and sophistication,” Benjamin Barker adds.

istinguished by the renowned naval architecture of Studio Arnaboldi and delivered by AB Yachts in 2009, Musa’s stunning design by Guido De Groot saw her listed as a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards 2010. Indeed, the impact and aura of her streamlined form makes it easy to see how she is always the centre of attention. And yet her renown as a worldclass motoryacht rests equally too on her high-speed performance and luxury credentials. Musa is now on sale, for the first time since her launch, listed exclusively with Engel & Völkers Yachting, and represented by Yacht Advisor and Head of Sales Sebastiano Pitasi. “Aboard Musa, guests are taken into another realm of contrasting joys: There is the invigorating rush as one speeds across the waves, swiftly en route to the next marina. And then there’s the calm and tranquillity that awaits in one’s spacious private quarters,” he says. “Meanwhile, Musa’s impressive deck is ideal for socialising and entertaining with family and friends. And if fun and action are in order, there is a diverse array of towable toys

and snorkelling equipment on board. Barbara Tognon is the mastermind behind the beautiful interior furnishings. Light woods are juxtaposed with clean, bright tones, enhanced by a layout synonymous with sophistication. The light-filled main saloon features an airy and open plan lounge area with an entertainment centre. There is also an elegant dining space with seating for up to ten guests. Outdoor living and dining in unrivalled style can be enjoyed on the panoramic aft deck, with a large dining area and comfortable sun pads, while yet more openair seating and sun pads await on the flybridge. She can welcome up to nine guests in five spacious and contemporary cabins – including a full-beam master stateroom with a walk-in closet and private lounge, two double suites, one twin cabin and a single, each with full en suite facilities. “Her exquisite quality standards rival that of any motor yacht on the world seas today. She is also available for charter, posing another tantalizing prospect to experience her quite legendary capabilities and comforts,” Sebastiano Pitasi adds.

INTERVIEW

Pure Passion for Boats Mark Evans, Group Managing Director of McConaghy, oversees the production of moths, racing yachts and luxury performance catamarans.

What first got you into boat building and what do you love most about this career?  I was very fortunate to be brought up on a waterfront property in Sydney. And as soon as I was big enough to pull-start my 4.5 Mercury outboard, nothing could drag me off the water, whether I was out in a sailing dinghy, a motor dinghy or anything else. It really just became my true passion from a young age. I just love creating customised, complex and beautifully structured yachts from scratch. Over the last 50 years, McConaghy has built a wide variety of yachts. What do they have in common?  They are all custom or semi-custom, all lightweight and high-performance, built with a quality standard and a passion for everything we do. Where are the boats built?  We have shipbuilding facilities based both in Hong Kong, China, and Sydney, Australia. Who’s responsible for the design?  We hire naval architects from all over the world, and then we have our own in-house engineers, designers and draftsmen who take care of all the detail furniture, system, deck layout and drawings.

Mark Evans has been with McConaghy since 1995, a shipbuilder synonymous with high-tech racing yachts. 2020 saw the unveiling of the Makara sailing superyacht series (right).

We have a very unusual situation right now with the pandemic. What kind of boats are people looking for at the moment?  From my point of view, people are going to be on the look-out for luxury, high-performance cruising yachts. What are the advantages of owning a boat, especially in these times we live in?  You can see the world in a luxury environment, isolated from the pandemic that is gripping the globe.

INTERVIEW: UTA ABENDROTH

Which boat that you’ve built is your favourite and why?  It’s hard to pin down one, as I have several favourites. If we’re talking about racing yachts, it would be Wild Oats, as it has won the Sydney – Hobart race, with line honours 9 times. When it comes to a luxury yacht, the one that stands out and the most iconic for me would be Adastra, a 142 ft. power tri. The why? It is cool.

ADVISE

Enjoy the Journey!

Charter Advisor Marina Donchenko shares her ideas: Things to do on board to have fun while making the most of one’s privacy, safety and health. Things to do on board  One of the most special aspects of a yacht charter holiday is stepping aboard and immediately feeling pampered and cared for by the crew. The yacht becomes your floating villa, ready to change direction on a whim, depending on guests’ wishes and the captain’s expertise. Just imagine: one evening you are cruising along the charming Amalfi coast and the next morning your yacht is already approaching Porto Cervo; or you fall asleep after enjoying a magical sunset, the fading sunrays blinking on the columns of the Poseidon Temple on Cape Sounio, and the next morning you find yourself in the middle of the legendary Caldera of Santorini Island. While on board you can enjoy a yoga or pilates session on the deck, take a nap in a hammock or on one of the sun pads, or enjoy a happy hour while basking in the evening sun. You can cook together with the onboard chef and even pick up a trick or two. Watch movies under the stars or choose a yacht with an indoor cinema equipped with the very latest devices and comforts. Another recommendation is to expand your radius whenever possible: You can snorkel, paddleboard, go for a swim, dive, and even explore shipwrecks at sea. Plus: You can visit the bays and underwater cities that are rarely reached by others; learn to use new water toys and practice your flyboarding skills. Marina Donchenko is Charter Advisor at Engel & Völkers Yachting in Athens and an expert on the Mediterranean.

Going on vacation is good for your health   Nuffield Health, the UK’s

largest healthcare charity, and tour operator Kuoni conducted a study* in 2013 and discovered that there are significant detrimental effects to not going on holiday. They found that those who didn’t go away for a break had higher levels of stress. Travelling makes us feel so much better in fact that it even has a stabilizing effect on our blood pressure. Amazingly, even three days of vacation make travellers feel well rested, less anxious, and in a better overall mood. What we’ve long known anecdotally has now been proven through authoritative research: travel has a positive impact on our health, our relationships, business performance and the well-being of communities. Maximum privacy  Going on vacation has become one of the prime opportunities for us to connect with our loved ones. To convene with all generations of the family on one trip and spend quality time together. We all care about our mode of travel being secure, with health and safety topping the list of priorities. On board a yacht there is far greater flexibility and seating and spacing options, allowing, for instance, for safer physical distancing between guests than anywhere else while dining out. Safety first  During the pandemic, a daily crew health check is mandatory in order to ensure that all health concerns are thoroughly monitored. P.P.E (masks, gloves and hand sanitisers) is provided to all guests and crew, as required according to each destination’s regulations (since the handling of tests and masks can vary, it is best to follow current instructions). Cabins are customarily cleaned and sanitised three times a day, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene. The crew is highly trained to utilise international best practices in sanitation, ensuring that guests’ stay on board is the most pleasant, relaxing and unforgettable it can possibly be. *www.kuoni.co.uk
