Issue 4/20
WELCOME
s the yachting industry enters a new decade, the future of the ultimate luxury sector has us wondering what it has in store for us. One subject we cannot ignore this year is how challenging it has been for everyone amid COVID-19. Just like many others, we have had to select our marketing activities carefully. And in order to continue the GG Yachting magazine we decided to go digital. We felt strongly that it was the best decision, as it saves resources that printing consumes, which seemed fitting for this edition’s theme. As we look ahead to the future, it becomes impossible to ignore one of the most critical challenges facing our market: the future of our oceans and the well-being of our environment. The idea behind dedicating this edition of GG Yachting to sustainability within the yachting industry was to get the correct information into the hands of the right audience – to help us all make the best choices where possible. This edition, we also welcome the Water Revolution Foundation, which co-authored the article ‘A Matter of Healthy Oceans’. Filled with insights into the current reality of marine life, what the organisation stands for, what projects they are involved in and what we can all do to be more ecologically aware. In this edition’s Yachting Advice column, our own Bert Meynen, Business Development, shares his expertise in sustainable yachting and answers frequently asked questions about the topic. Last, but by no means least, we’re delighted to be featuring S/Y Black Pearl as the cover story. She leads the way for what the future of sustainable yacht design should entail, as the very first in her class. PHOTO: CARIN VERBRUGGEN

Rethinking Yachting Great ideas are born when the familiar is questioned. In yachting: How can luxury and ecology be a good match? The team at Swiss Sustainable Yachts has found a radical answer in the form of “AQUON One”. A catamaran with a new self-evident luxury and extraordinary standards of ecology and sustainability. The true highlight of “AQUON One” is her sophisticated energy system with hydrogen fuel cells at its core. These provide energy for the electric propulsion and cover all on-board energy usage. The hydrogen required is either ob-
tained directly on board from solar energy or refuelled from sustainable production. The electrical energy obtained from solar panels is converted into hydrogen, which is stored compressed in lightweight carbon tanks or in lithium-ion batteries for short-term use. A positive side effect of this is that the propulsion system operates with zero emissions and reduces noise pollution. In addition to the low weight of the hydrogen compared to fossil fuels, the hull shape, which mimics biological design models from nature, further
4
extends the cruising range. By producing energy on board, “AQUON One” even has the potential to explore with unlimited range. Natural and renewable materials like cork and recycled leather are dominant throughout the interior design. The materials, which are still unusual in the maritime sector, underline this claim of an interplay between luxury and sustainability. Conceived with esprit and understatement in Switzerland and developed and built in Europe, “AQUON One” will enter the market in late 2021.

Sustainable sail: Thanks to the DynaRig and slim hull, Black Pearl cruises the oceans highly efficiently using wind power alone.
Powered by Sustainability
The wind as the driving force, the sailing system pure high-tech and the slim hull trimmed for speed – with Black Pearl, environmental awareness and luxury come together impressively. TEXT: JÜrg Zimmermann

“Since the launch of Black Pearl, there has been a growing interest in sustainability for superyachts.” PARIS BALOUMIS
The 109-metre long motor yacht Bravo Eugenia was also optimised by Oceanco with regard to her environmental compatibility, with the help of the LIFE concept.

The DynaRig of Black Pearl is reminiscent in its appearance of old square sails. However, thanks to modern control technology and high-tech materials, the sail system is highly efficient. The DynaRig can be operated by one single person using a handy controller. In just a few minutes the sails are automatically unfurled and aligned to form one closed, cohesive overall surface.

T
heir sight is breathtaking: sailing yachts embody sport and adventure, stand for dynamics and pure elegance. But who thinks of sustainability when it comes to the sleek boats with high-rising masts and shining sails? The owner of Black Pearl does. After intensive development work, the superyacht is now cruising the oceans, driven by the wind with environmentally friendly technology. And has the future already built in.
Paris Baloumis, Marketing Director at Oceanco, is proud of how successfully the core team at Oceanco has collaborated with its innovative specialist partners.
Sustainability and luxury yachting? Two categories that, at first, seem strange to one another, but do offer many options when combined. A superyacht that is not only perfectly designed in terms of space, equipment and comfort, but also implements the desire for ecological solutions in terms of propulsion and boat technology – with Black Pearl, this vision has become reality. The briefing to the Oceanco boat builders was demanding. Environmental protection and sustainability were to be the focus of the development and construction of Black Pearl, using future-oriented technologies as far as possible. As an engineer, he has a natural inclination and a pronounced curiosity for new systems and innovative techniques, the Russian owner can be quoted as saying. It took four years to implement the requirements of the impressive super sailing yacht, from the initial ideas to the launch in 2018. A sleek luxury yacht, driven solely by the power of the wind. For the boat builders, however, the owner’s dream represented a real challenge. “In order to be able to offer our clients optimal solutions, we always complement our own core team with the most innovative experts in their respective fields,” says Paris Baloumis, explaining Oceanco’s approach to work. Black Pearl was designed by Ken Freivokh of Ken Freivokh Design, whose primary task was to integrate the sailing system into both the interior and exterior. The responsible engineers finally realised a “DynaRig” for the 106.7-metre long yacht, an automated sailing system with freely rotating masts, whose square sails form a closed surface. The special sail arrangement is formally reminiscent of the great sailors of yes-
11
teryear, but in its implementation for Black Pearl it is pure high-tech. As early as the 1960s, Hamburg-based naval architect Wilhelm Prölss developed the DynaRig as an efficient sailing system for cargo ships. Using state-of-the-art materials and components such as masts made of carbon fibre, the engineers cooperating with Oceanco have optimised the sail system to fit Black Pearl perfectly. Using a handy controller, the sails can be precisely steered by just one person. Marketing Director Paris Baloumis: “It only takes six or seven minutes to set all the sails optimally. The resulting wind power is sufficient to cross the Atlantic without motor assistance. Boat propulsion today could hardly be more ecological.” In addition, the future was also taken into account when designing the system. “Currently, the development of solar sails is making significant progress,” Baloumis explains. “Black Pearl’s DynaRig is already designed in such a way that conventional sails can be replaced by solar sails as manufacturing technology advances.” Then the energy balance of the luxury yacht will improve even further. The sails will provide the propulsion power and, at the same time, contribute a significant share to the yacht’s power supply. Until then, the energy supply on board will be provided by an engine, which is considerably smaller than comparable superyachts, only takes up space on the lower deck and thus provides an additional 100 square metres of space for the passengers. Oceanco and the engineers from Lateral Naval Architects are achieving this with the help of the comprehensive LIFE design concept, which places various aspects of construction and equipment in a holistic context, taking into account ecological and efficiency criteria. Environmental awareness is also increasingly on the agenda for motor yachts. As, for example, with the superyacht Bravo Eugenia, which continues the LIFE concept of combining sustainability, elegance and luxury. The lengthened hull requires less propulsion power and helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent. The engine operates with reduced noise, and in port the yacht manoeuvres in whisper mode. Nevertheless, high speeds remain possible due to the slim shape. Black Pearl has brought the subject of sustainability into focus anew in the world of superyachts. Even though no direct successor is yet in sight, the level of interest in sailing yachts in this category has increased significantly.

A Statement of Intent
Whether in remote Nordic fjords or in southern waters, Arksen’s vessels are designed to meet the requirements of safety and sustainability in any maritime situation. At the same time, there is absolutely no need to forgo any of the comforts and luxury on board when exploring the world’s oceans with the family.
Heading off on an adventure trip with the family, discovering maritime worlds and sharing experiences with like-minded people – the Arksen vessels, ranging from 45ft to 100ft+ long, are not a status symbol but rather a statement of intent. At the heart of this is the Explorers’ Club, a community which shares an enthusiasm for life on the water and gives both individually and syndicate-owned vessels access to tailor-made experiences in unique destinations. The shared ownership allows the syndicate members to use Arksen explorer vessels with a crew and extensive equipment for several weeks a year at affordable costs. Besides their use by this owner community, the ships are also available for the purpose of maritime research during certain periods. The Arksen Foundation is responsible for coordinating this. To ensure that this ambitious approach remains successful in the long term, the vessels are designed with sustainability in mind. From design through to construction, and from use to end-of-life recyclability, Arksen Founder Jasper Smith has the entire life cycle in mind when developing his vision.

he Water Revolution Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to driving and accelerating sustainability in the superyacht industry. With the International Maritime Organization directing the maritime industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050, from 2008 levels, as well as the ongoing increase in protected marine areas, the time for the superyacht industry to act is now. “Sustainability can no longer be regarded as something optional. But, more importantly, our industry is well-positioned to take the lead with a smart and affluent clientele and our unique connection with the ocean,” said Robert van Tol, Executive Director of the Water Revolution Foundation. “Our foundation is open to all industry companies. Sustainability is not a competitive advantage; it is a responsibility, a minimum standard that we need to improve upon collectively on a continuous basis.” There is already support from anchor partners including Abeking & Rasmussen, Alexseal, Amels | Damen, Benetti, Feadship, Heesen, Lürssen, the MB92 Group and Rybovich. These forward-thinking companies have not only recognised the urgency of reducing the industry’s ecological footprint, but have pledged a substantial multi-year commitment and financial contributions. Together, these companies have made a bold statement about what the future of superyachting will look like. “This leadership is exactly what the superyacht industry urgently needs to accelerate sustainability efforts,” said Mr. van Tol. “Reducing our footprint is a collective challenge and requires real cooperation. I’d like
15
to thank our anchor partners for sharing this vision, making it possible to start this ambitious programme, and would call on other companies to join this revolution too.” Moving forward, the Water Revolution Foundation’s activities will have three areas of focus: promoting new technology and empowering innovation; proactively creating the industry’s own sustainability agenda, going beyond legislative requirements, and re-investing in ocean conservation. The foundation will also be developing an assessment tool that is capable of measuring the impact of design and build choices along with the footprint of existing yachts and the effectiveness of technical solutions. The first industry-tailored sustainability management course, part of an educational programme for the industry, will also be launched. Additionally, a database for verified sustainable solutions will be initiated as well, facilitating designers, builders and refitters with the specialist knowledge they require to accelerate this crucial shift towards sustainability.

INTERVIEW
Truly Visionary
An interview with Marco Casiraghi and Bernard d’Alessandri about a sustainable future for yachting.
INTERVIEW: MAXIMILIENNE ACQUARONE; PHOTOS: LUCAS BUTTO (1), MESI (1), CARLO BORLENGHI
Above: Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco (right), and Marco Casiraghi, Founder of the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge, discuss how the YCM and the Principality are committing to a sustainable yachting future. Left and below: The Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge’s goal is to develop alternative propulsion systems, using only clean energy sources to power the yachts of tomorrow.
What was the vision behind the YCM’s sustainable design? The YCM is part of a heritage we need to preserve. It enables us to fulfil our public service mission, enhance our representative role in promoting the Principality’s international appeal, and provide a lively venue so our members feel at home. The YCM implements a sustainability policy that aims to meet the needs of today’s generations while protecting future ones. A range of eco-responsible measures was incorporated into the YCM, setting new sustainability standards in line with Monaco’s environmental ambitions. Built to comply with France’s green building HQE [Haute Qualité Environnementale] standards, all the wood used in the construction is certified by the FSC [Forest Stewardship Council ensuring sustainable forestry]. The YCM Marina is equipped to collect waste water from yachts that is then sent to Monaco’s water treatment plant. Rapid charging stations delivering alternating or direct current were installed for electric boats, a first in the Mediterranean! In addition, solar panels behind the pool supply more than 60% of hot water used by the Sports Section. Can you tell us about the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge? The YCM’s Solar & Energy Challenge event presents the best opportunity to demonstrate eco-friendly technologies applied to pleasure navigation. This enables future engineers to showcase their capabilities in a fun race and gives them the chance to network with the shipyard industry. For the seventh edition, we wanted to support all the hard work already put in by the teams and to find a solution to keep the competition open while fully respecting health measures amid COVID-19. As a result, we now have all the tools enabling us to review the way we organise events and communicate. We decided to go virtual, where students will compete by video for three different prizes; Innovation, Eco Concept and Spirit. I hope that future events will be done globally, inspiring new generations and improving consumers’ knowledge of eco-friendly navigation possibilities. How do you envision the future of eco-friendly yachting? Developing an eco-responsible yachting sector is one of the major challenges of our time, and the YCM is deeply committed to it. As part of our project and ambition to position Monaco as the capital of yachting, we must help build its future.

Eco-Friendly Luxury
Bert Meynen, Business Development at Engel & Völkers Yachting, provides some answers regarding eco-friendly yachting and talks about what we can all do to help keep our oceans clean and healthy. Are there any eco-friendly standards in the yachting industry? There are currently no environmental standards universally set by the yachting industry as a whole. However, all yachts meet the environmental legislation developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). For yachts that are already built, there are ways to measure and improve their impact. Some organisations are developing assessment tools to determine how eco-friendly a yacht is. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has formed working groups to create standards that go beyond the regulations. Are there any misconceptions when people use the term eco-friendly in the yachting industry? It is a myth that there is no awareness. Many industry players offer eco-friendly solutions and clients are becoming increasingly interested in these options, in new build projects or when refitting an existing yacht.

Convinced sustainability in yachting has a bright future: Bert Meynen, Business Development at Engel & Völkers Yachting.
What do you need to know when considering buying an eco-friendly yacht? I’d recommend going for a new build project as that gives more options to achieve the optimum design for an individual client. The key to improving environ-
mental impact is assessing the life cycle assessment (LCA). Always request information about all three phases of a yacht’s life cycle: the build, operation and end of life, as well as any refits. Optimise choices for all three stages, otherwise it won’t be sustainable. Other essential factors to consider are the propulsion of the yacht and the “hotel load” that often requires the most energy overall. Installing sufficient power rather than overpowering and using ways of regenerating energy. Integrating the use of hydrogen as it can be stored, which eliminates the need for large batteries. And it runs without direct carbon emissions. When selecting the materials, choose sustainably-sourced raw materials that can be recycled, and incorporate previously recycled materials where possible. What can you do as an owner or charterer to be more environmentally aware? Anchoring in sandy areas avoids the risk of disrupting the seagrass and should be a priority. There are alternative methods to assist you where it’s not possible. Sunscreen is something we all use, but studies have revealed that ingredients found in most sunscreens, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, are incredibly toxic. They have noticeably adverse effects like damaging coral DNA and larvae. Cleaning products should be bio-friendly, and you should limit the amount of freshwater used for cleaning that differs from seawater and ends up there. Air conditioning is the highest consumer of energy on board. Divide it throughout the day, so that you only need one instead of two generators. When it comes to water toys, choose electric toys made from green materials. Many water toys like jet skis, flyboards, and submarines are available with electric propulsion. What do you hope to see in the future for eco-friendly yachting? I hope to see Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology implemented in upcoming yachts. We all have the power to make a change. Let’s drive this together!
