Her favourite colours are black and white. Yet award-winning photographer Marina Vernicos definitely knows how to masterfully orchestrate the blues. For nothing says “Greece” louder and clearer than the crisp images she captures. One can almost taste the crystal saltwater and feel the stubbornly strong wind just by gazing into them. thens-based photographer Marina Vernicos studied Communications and Photography at Emerson College in Boston, and Business Administration at Harvard University, before diving into artistic photography head on. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, from Paris to New York, Qatar and Korea. Forever wild at heart, she is an avid world traveller, with a track record of 133 countries. That hasn’t stopped her from publishing four coffee table books, while providing assistance to the local community as the founder and President of CREAID – a non-profit organisation with a humanitarian mandate, served through art. But when asked who she is, she will undoubtedly say, “A daughter and a mother, a wife and a friend, a photographer and a traveller – but most of all, a Hellene, born and baptised in the Aegean Sea”. She firmly believes that Greece stands out. It’s that light and the diversity of each of the thousands of islands with their eternal turquoise waters and breathtaking gulfs – the largest coastline in Europe. This small country is steeped in history, stretching back thousands of years. “And, let’s not forget the overwhelming hospitality of the people, or the gastronomical wealth, incomparable across the globe. Greece truly is a mirror image of its people, as well as the forces of nature: raw, delicate and kind, absolutely beautiful. Heaven on earth,” she adds. She could be based anywhere in the world. But to her, not opting to live in Athens seems unthinkable. “Imagine having the first espresso of each day across from the tranquil and majestic Acropolis. We could never get enough of it. Which is why we chose this spot at Lycabettus to build our home on, with the precious help of the star architect Dimitris Tsigos. Our house lies in the threshold between the city and the natural environment of the hill.” When asked about her relationship with the sea, almost like a love affair, she laughs. As a child, she used to spend all summer with her grandparents on the island of Sifnos. Where her great grandfather had built a small hotel, right on the beach. And that’s where she would stay.

“My grandfather would wake me up early every morning to go for a two-hour swim. All my memories are soaked in saltwater. So, the sea is part of who I am.” And it becomes obvious she gets extreme pleasure from even just looking at her, whether she is calm or not. But her greatest dream is to defy all photographic barriers and shatter her own limits, as well as record, by traveling to all existing countries and sailing all seas she hasn’t yet dived into. Nevertheless, when in Athens, it’s quite possible to bump into her. In summer her favourite place to enjoy a cocktail is “Island”. Just 27 kilometres from the vibrant city centre, being there feels rather like being on a remote island. During the rest of the year, she opts for the emblematic restaurant “Athénée” (it first opened back in 1939, hosting legendary personalities of the last century like Odysseas Elytis, Manos Hatzidakis, Melina Mercouri, Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn). And “Balthazar”, also downtown. Or strolling through the Acropolis Museum (designed by Bernard Schumi). “I love the way the rays of light play with the timeless statues and geometry of space. And I can’t wait to visit the renovated National Gallery, showcasing treasures never before exhibited.

His insatiable restlessness is notorious. And so is his sense of humour and humbleness. Chef Angelos Lantos is a tireless ambassador for the renaissance of modern French cuisine, reinterpreted through the purity of Mediterranean products, at two-star Michelin restaurant “Spondi”. Bridging two different worlds together, so close to the iconic Kallimarmaro Stadium in Athens. His first dishes were far less sophisticated however, and genuinely modest. He learned them by watching closely as his father cooked. And it was in those moments that he realised his calling. Still, the greatest lesson of all was that respect is earned, not given. When asked how he would introduce Greece to someone who has never been here before in a culinary way, he chooses the traditional path, without hesitating for even a second. “I would prepare a juicy horiatiki salad, followed by a traditional, aromatic phyllo-dough pie with greens, pan-fried red mullets with lemon, and roasted lamb with garlic and fresh herbs. And I would end with a beloved dessert, the delicate Greek custard pie known as “Galaktoboureko”, made from semolina, wrapped in sheets of phyllo and soaked in syrup,” he adds, smiling. That said, the Greek gastronomic scene is in the process of reinventing itself. The ingredients remain the same, following age-old traditions, but boundaries are being expanded with new scientific approaches, in pursuit of a balance between artistry and flavour. “In Mediterranean cuisine, the purity of all the ingredients used is what constitutes luxury. It’s seasonality, sustainability and inventiveness that set the rules on how to satisfy your senses.”
To him, food is pleasure, memory, communication and culture. And his favourite dish is fresh crayfish with caviar and grapefruit. But when asked of the one ingredient he would never use, the first Greek chef to be awarded two Michelin stars, Angelos Lantos, laughs. “It would be like trying to write a novel without using a certain letter from the alphabet. Impossible!”

The Talented Mr. Schwab Coming full circle, half-Greek, half-Austrian Marios Schwab has now returned to Athens as Creative Director of the upscale brand Zeus+Dione. And is now proving that the most fascinating collections are indeed the product of creative synergies.
What is the concept behind your first work for Zeus+Dione? It’s a collection of beautifully crafted elements inspired by the Revolution of 1821 (for example, the exquisite embroideries reminding one of the distinctive Evzoni uniforms) and my personal interpretation of the modern Greek dress code. I’m inspired by the chiaroscuro of the landscape, from the authenticity of remote rural corners to the concentrated urban life of Greek cities. How can a brand be revolutionary nowadays? It’s a matter of ethics and sustainability, of respecting the environment as well as the raw materials used, while treasuring tradition. It’s the enemy of extensive seasonal industrial production, in a hugely competitive business. All of which are rooted in the brand identity of Zeus+Dione. It’s what constitutes luxury, really.

Your clients treasure your clothes. They feel just how precious they are. It’s not just about the purity and rarity of materials used, or even of the artisanal craftsmanship. When I create clothes, I have a conceptual approach. There is storytelling. This in turn creates an emotional connection. Who is the Zeus+Dione woman? She is empowered. Far more important than the clothes she is wearing, but they elevate her personality, like a second skin. She is a jetsetter who does not follow trends. She is timeless, like her choices. It’s been a year now since you returned to Athens. And all memories of my childhood automatically resurfaced. I’m surrounded by the love of family and friends, by the kindness of strangers. I’m honoured to be back in such a versatile, vibrant and charismatic city. It’s an attractive chaos. And this light!
