s the Chinese philosopher Confucius is reported to have said some 2,500 years ago: “They must often change who would be constant in happiness.” I have gone through many changes in my life as well. After training as a shipping agent in my home city of Hamburg, I studied business administration in Toronto, New York and Barcelona before starting my own business while still a young man. What began as a local brokerage in the riverside suburbs of Hamburg grew into a global real estate company that operates successfully in over 30 countries. Watching Engel & Völkers develop and observing changes in myself as the company expanded has filled me with a deep sense of joy and satisfaction. The decision to buy a piece of real estate is also a form of change and often marks the beginning of a new phase in life. We’ve seen many people fulfill a dream and buy a new property over the past year. Demand for real estate in the premium segment was particularly high: In 2021, Engel & Völkers recorded year-on-year growth of 97 percent in residential real estate transactions in the €5 million to €10 million segment. Top segment transactions of over €10 million also grew by 90 percent. But ultra-high-net-worth individuals aren’t interested primarily in a possible return on their investment. They’re looking for an increase in quality of life. For me, the one constant amid all the change is my family and close friends, some of whom have accompanied me for decades. Current events have once again made me keenly aware of how incredibly important they are in my life. Many conflicts around the world are tearing families apart and making people fear for their lives. I am very touched by the food and clothing, some people have welcomed refugees into their homes. Collective efforts like these cannot help but foster hope, which is a particular-

The Russian attack on Ukraine had just started as we were putting together the content, and so we were faced with a daunting challenge: how to create a lifestyle magazine that would still have relevance for you, dear reader, while we are surrounded by devastating war updates and heartbreaking images of endless suffering so close to home. We decided this issue should concentrate solely on personalities and topics that exude optimism. Features that allow us to take a breath and transport us into other worlds – if only for a moment. he Austrian capital draws millions of visitors each year. Built on the wealth of the nearly 600-year-old Habsburg monarchy, Vienna still looks like a city from a fairy tale, with horse-drawn carriages that clatter across the cobblestones, opulent palaces hung with glittering golden chandeliers and bright throngs of people going about their business in the narrow, winding streets. Extensive parks beckon on the banks of the Danube and the infrastructure is excellent. Small wonder, then, that the city has topped Mercer’s Quality of Living survey for ten years in a row. And that London-based news magazine The Economist has repeatedly named Vienna the world’s most livable city – ahead of Melbourne and Osaka. Vienna’s historic center is encircled by the Ringstraße, a grand boulevard lined with magnificent buildings, museums and concert halls. Towering over everything is the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral), a Gothic masterpiece complete with ornate towers and a colorful tiled roof. Walk up the 343 steps of the south tower and you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view of the Hof burg, a 13th century palace complex that contains the Spanish Riding School with its magnificent Lipizzan stallions, and the Hofburg Chapel, where the bright voices of the Vienna Boys’ Choir ring out at Sunday Mass. Baroque Belvedere Palace has a permanent collection of select works by Gustav Klimt, including “The Kiss.” In the white and gold Hall of Mirrors at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the young Wolfgang A madeus Mozart played for Empress Maria Theresa in 1762 when he was only 6. Immortal composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Mahler still feature regularly on Vienna’s

Karlskirche concert calendar, which boasts 15,000 musical events each year. Before the coronavirus pandemic, 10,000 people attended live performances of classical music every evening – something unheard of anywhere else. The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Wiener Konzerthaus and Burgtheater are among the top venues. But time hasn’t stood still either. The monolithic architecture and colorful Enzo lounge furniture that distinguish the M useumsQuartier (MQ), an ensemble located in the former imperial stables, set a contemporary tone. The Mumok Museum is dedicated to 20th century works – from Pop Art to Viennese Actionism, while the Albertina exhibits works by Anselm Kiefer, Egon Schiele and Albrecht Dürer. The city’s food scene is also very diverse. In Nook Vienna, guests are greeted by the smell of cinnamon, sugar and freshly baked bread. Habibi & Hawara, which serves Middle Eastern fare, is part of an independent immigrant integration program. Otto Bauer offers regional specialties with a twist, the Zum Schwarzen Kameel restaurant is a Viennese institution and Café Central and Café Korb are absolutely legendary. Plunge into art
Keeping boredom at bay is something New York-based designer Alex Proba is good at. Her abstract motifs turn furniture, carpets, cushions, walls – and increasingly, swimming pools – into bright, cheery works of art. Designing pool bottoms was a dream the German-born Proba had been fostering for a long time. In 2020, she realized her first pool project in the garden of a mid-century modern house by architect Donald Wexler near the desert in Palm Springs, California. The result of eight days spent hand-painting in the baking sun was an explosion of colors and organic shapes. The effect is even more stunning when there’s water in the pool, and the light refracts, changing the dimensions of the mural. The best way to enjoy this type of art is to jump in, dive beneath the surface or just let yourself float. So far, Proba has created colorful pool bottoms in two homes near Palm Springs and has designed two graphic pool decks, one in Manhattan and the other in Kansas City.

Self-Help! Every day, spiritual coach Laura Malina Seiler inspires tens of thousands of people. Her podcast has been downloaded 33 million times.
Toward the end of February, you spontaneously announced a Global Peace Meditation, which 16,000 people participated in live on YouTube. What was the most powerful thing about it? That so many people were focusing their attention simultaneously on creating a space for peace. I find it fascinating how the worst crises can bring out the best in humanity. A crisis always also contains moments of hope and possibilities for change.
You and your family live in Berlin, but spend several months in Maui each year. What can we learn from the Hawaiian attitude toward life? There’s a special life force in the islands, where aloha – love and affection – really flourishes. People treat each other and the earth with a lot of respect. In the Hawaiian philosophy, some words are particularly important. O hana stands for family and community and conveys that we can only be strong if we stick together. Pono means doing the right thing – intuitively knowing the difference between right and wrong. How can each of us contribute to making the world a happier place? By being happy and fulfilled ourselves, and thinking positive thoughts. We can each ask ourselves: How can I perform a good deed today? It doesn’t matter how small.

Viva la vida: The appeal of the Mexican lifestyle to property buyers
B
efore the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico in the 16th century, the region had been culturally influenced by the Maya and the Aztecs, both highly developed civilizations, since 400 CE. The Chichén Itzá Pyramid, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site today, provides striking evidence of this. In 2020, Mexico was the most frequented of any Latin American country, and the number three destination worldwide after Italy and France, according to the International Tourism Organization. When I was in Mexico earlier this year, I was seduced all over again. The combination of Mexico’s rich history, breathtaking scenery, gorgeous beaches and an incredibly positive vibe is what makes the country such a magical place for me. Many property buyers are also drawn to the authentic Mexican lifestyle. The increased flexibility that comes with working remotely makes the idea of a second residence in sunny, southern climes even more attractive than ever. Under such circumstances, a second home can be enjoyed more frequently and for longer periods of time. An absolute hot spot is Los Cabos, a natural wonderland in the southernmost part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, where the deep blue Pacific Ocean meets the sandy desert dotted with green cactuses. Famed Hollywood personalities such as Jennifer Aniston and top model Cindy Crawford both love the area’s unique flair. Los Cabos is only a two-hour flight from Los Angeles, which is easy to reach by air from many parts of the world. Warm temperatures, picturesque beaches and
the stunning properties there make Los Cabos a world-class destination for those looking to buy. We’ve been observing this trend in our Engel & Völkers Shop in Los Cabos as well. In 2021, a record year for our team, sales nearly tripled compared with the previous year. The majority of buyers (roughly 70 percent) came from the nearby U.S., followed by about 20 percent from Canada. The remaining 10 percent of buyers were from Mexico itself as well as Europe, Asia and Australia. Los Cabos is just as popular with individuals, couples and families with children as it is with investors. The region’s increasingly cosmopolitan character has led many people to regard Los Cabos as a good place to live year round. The large expat community and the excellent infrastructure have pursuaded more and more of our customers to move to the Mexican peninsula. The most sought-after locations in Los Cabos include Palmilla, Puerto Los Cabos, Querencia and Pedregal. The latter has retained its traditional Mexican charm and enjoys particular popularity for this very reason. The average price of a luxury property in Los Cabos is 3.1 million dollars. Whereas single-family homes cost 4.3 million on average, an exclusive condo or apartment will only set you back around 1.5 million. Prices for very special properties can be considerably higher. Together at last! After taking place almost entirely online in 2021, this year’s EVX, organized by Engel & Völkers Americas, was a fantastic event. I was there in Las Vegas from March 6–8, and still can’t get over the enthusiasm with which the roughly 1,300 participants and members of the Engel & Völkers network engaged in discussion, exchanged ideas and sought information about all the current trends. Don’t worry, be happy! No symbol is better at boosting your spirits and lightening your mood than the iconic yellow smiley face. It first appeared in the French magazine France Soir in 1972 beside a goodnews column written by Franklin Loufrani. Loufrani went on to patent the happy face and establish The Smiley Company, which has been spreading happiness and positivity around the world ever since. Do you sometimes also feel that other people’s lives are much more perfect than your own? In a society that tends to value perfection over authenticity, it’s easy to get lost in feelings of self-doubt or caught up in endless cycles of self-optimization. er style is the opposite of Bauhaus. For more than 20 years, India Mahdavi has been using unusual color effects, a touch of humor and a passion for ornamentation to transform interiors into joyful, choreographed spaces. Today, she is regarded as something of a superstar. Silke Bender met the French-Iranian architect and designer in Paris, where she lives and works. What’s the color of your mood today? I just got back from London, where I was redesigning the new Sketch Gallery in these new, very warm colors, and that’s how I feel. I still feel the glow of Sketch: gold, yellow and champagne. But I could also answer that I feel blue and yellow because of Ukraine: the new colors for freedom and peace.

The Sketch Gallery’s famous pink interior is gone. What can you tell us about the new atmosphere that you’ve created? The pink was so strong, I didn’t want to say: Oh, I’m just redoing it in another color. So I began working with the African artist Yinka Shonibari on different textures: the beautiful Senegalese fabrics produced by famous textile designer Aissa Dione, the woven wall lights by Inès Bressand from Ghana, the shining m etal w allpaper from Gournay that reflects the light in a champagne color, the natural raffia and wicker details – and the ceiling painted in my color, Mandarine au lait. The overall result of these textures and yellow tones is warmth. Warmth is the new color of Sketch. It’s about togetherness, the joy of touching. It’s more about being human, less about the image.

Was it hard for you to say good-bye to one of your most iconic and most Instagrammed interior designs? It was a bit difficult in the beginning, but I now feel very comfortable with it because the t iming was perfect. The pink room belonged to pre-COVID times. Now we’re in a new era. Before COVID, the world, our minds, were lighter. The pandemic closed a chapter and we all entered into this digital kind of life. We were not able to be together, and we were sharing our lives through screens. The pink room was a fantastic space but a lot of its success was also all about its image in social media. I think the experience of touching and texture, and the joy of being together, have

become more important now. But there’s another way in which the old Sketch is still present... The whole idea of Sketch was that the interior changes every two or three years. The pink room remained for seven years because it was so successful. And because it was such an iconic room, I made a volumetric miniature of it. The model, at a scale of 1:10, is present right now in the restaurant. It’s a way of preserving the old space. It’s an archive and an object in it’s own right, and you can actually still enter it with your camera. It’s beautiful and fun! Why do you sometimes work with mass market brands such as Monoprix or H&M? In working with H&M, I saw an opportunity to democratize my work, to break the boundaries between high- and low-end markets. Breaking down barriers is what I brought to this profession – bouncing from one discipline to another. With this collection, H&M has offered me the opportunity to spread a joyful palette of colors on an international scale. What’s behind the blurred chessboard pattern in the H&M Home collection? The collection was conceived during the pandemic like a wind of needed optimism in a world of uncertainty, thus the out-of-focus graphic elements and blurry colors melting into each other. How often do you give the interior of your own home a makeover? Not often enough (she laughs). I’ve been living in my home for 25 years because it’s just around the corner from my office. Recently, I renovated a huge part of the apartment and it felt like moving, but now I feel that I should r eally move somewhere else. I bought a big house in Arles that I have been working on for two years to make it my new space. T herefore, I would like to scale down in Paris and have something a bit smaller and more concentrated. What style and what colors predominate in your Paris home? It’s not that colorful, it’s more quiet. It’s a home that evolved more naturally as the layers of my life were added, one after the other. Colors come mostly from my artworks on the walls. My bedroom is in off-pink, the kitchen is colorful, yes. The furniture is a mixture of my prototypes and objects by Ettore Sottsass or Gio Ponti, mostly Italian designers. But I’ve put a lot of colors into my new house in Arles!

You are known for creating interiors that make people feel good. Are you a happy person by nature or do you use color as a form of therapy? My attraction to color has always been within me. And it’s something that I’ve always enjoyed doing: playing with colors in a very natural way. So for a long time, I didn’t even realize it had anything to do with talent. I often dress in dark blue because I need to be in a neutral position to be able to juggle colors all day long. Colors came to me during my childhood years in the U.S. where I first watched color TV: the cartoons of Walt Disney or Tex Avery. The mid-60s in America were really crazy when it came to colors. Just think about the Hollywood movies in Technicolor! And my father liked to show me books about his homeland Iran, and I was deeply impressed by the colorful mosque of Esfahan. Consciously or unconsciously, colors became the material of my emotions. Can colors make us happier? Definitely! They give us energy and have a strong impact on our mood. I really believe that the environment we live in affects the way we feel in an important way. What are the ingredients of a joyful interior? View colors as your friends. And don’t be scared of mixing them. Think about your home as a
dinner party: It might be boring if you just invite people of the same age and profession. Also invite foreigners who have new stories to tell and get more interesting conversations started. Is there a color combination that you would never use? I would never say never, because color never comes alone. It depends on materials and textures and is always part of a context. I could tell you that I’m not crazy about very contrasting colors, like black and yellow. But I love them on a bee. So, no rules. Stay open-minded. You worked for seven years with Christian Liaigre – the French master of sleek and contemporary French style who focused on neutral tones. What made you f lip your style 180 degrees when you founded your own agency in 1999? I don’t think I changed my style. When I was working for Christian, I adopted his vocabulary. It was all about proportions, about a certain richness of materials, because he had this obsession with beautiful natural materials, and crafts. It was very easy for me to adopt that language. I remember though, that I was always the one adding color (she laughs). But he always said that he only does what he knows how to do. When I struck out on my own, I did exactly the same. And I was lucky that my first project was the Townhouse Hotel in Miami. Why? Miami is such a different environment: “Sea, Sex and Sun.” How to express that in three dimensions? So I started playing around with all the spectrums of colors. This was very unusual at that time and gave the hotel a very strong identity. The roof terrace, for example, was all in red, with waterbeds. It was often photographed because it was so photogenic. That was the first of a number of hotels, the last was the L’Apogée in Courchevel, completed in 2013. What made you stop doing hotel interiors? When I started in 2000, the hotel business was very interesting for designers. There was this new idea of finding home away from home and connecting people all over the planet. Then it became an industry. Most of the offers I received left me no freedom whatsoever. Everything was already planned down to the last detail, and they just wanted me to do the colors and brand the hotel with my name. But I am an architect and a designer, I can’t just decorate something. Luckily, I’m in a position today to be able to take on only projects that I am really passionate about.

You spent a year living in Germany. How did that inf luence you?
We came to Europe in May 1968 and wanted to live in Paris. But there was chaos because of the student revolt, and we ended up in H eidelberg. My life went from Technicolor to black and white. Everything was gray to me, the sky, the buildings, the people. I had the trauma of losing colors. I have this memory of walking down the shopping street with my father, like in a black-and-white movie, and suddenly, I see a pair of bright-orange shoes that were all shiny and glowing in the window, and my father bought them for me. Then we moved to the south of France and the sun came back. Were you never drawn to Bauhaus or inspired by its ideas like so many other interior designers? I really love Bauhaus. It was a fantastic movement! Conceptual and radical – that’s fabulous. To think that way and to go to that extreme – I guess I’m just not able to do it. I’m not precise enough. My background is different, it’s more cinematographic: I want to be more like a filmmaker, telling stories, putting characters into my creations and developing a plot. Can you give an example? When Ladurée asked me to design its interiors, I said: Look, you have a muse, MarieAntoinette. Versailles. Think about the beautiful garden of Versailles. Imagine Ladurée like a garden of sweetness. What would happen to Marie-Antoinette if you took her to Geneva, Beverly Hills or Tokyo? Then I started creating and everything came together: the colors, the shapes – like the round, macaron-like lamps. Is designing private homes any different? Of course. For residences, my work is more about portraiture. You have to think more like a photographer. You have to capture the identity of the people. Help them to find themselves at ease, in the best light and angle. I don’t like overdoing homes because people should still be able to take possession of their places afterwards. In public spaces, where people spend just a few hours, I like to express myself more boldly. In people’s homes, I don’t want to be too present. Is there a project or an assignment that you still dream of completing? There are several: I would love to design a train, work with mobility. A car could be interesting as well. And I would like to shoot a movie, a big story in big pictures. The last one that blew me away was “The Last Duel” directed by Ridley Scott. Would you like to know more?

ome places stay with you even when you’ve left them behind. This nostalgic sentiment makes people return time and again to the Waldhaus luxury hotel in Sils Maria, Switzerland – a stronghold standing above two mountain lakes at over 1,800 meters. Wide corridors, thick carpets, rocking chairs beside tall windows, books to win a bibliophile’s heart and a 100-year-old Steinway grand. People have been unwinding here since before the concept even existed. Tea and scones are served in the afternoons while live music plays in the background. Otherwise, it’s extraordinarily peaceful, apart from the muted sound of conversation and the rustling of myriad newspapers. Very little has changed here in the mountains since the hotel first opened its doors in June 1908. The Waldhaus has been remodeled countless times since then, but always – and this is the genius of it – in a way that is virtually unnoticeable. Owned by the same family from the beginning, it is currently run by the fifth generation, who personally greet and bid their guests farewell just like their ancestors before them. The share of regular guests is 80 percent. More than other establishments perhaps, the Waldhaus has always drawn intellectuals: publishers, writers, philosophers, directors, composers. Industrialists. Nobel Prize winners. Back then, people often stayed for several months, as evidenced by the five-door closets. This summer, the Waldhaus is opening for its 115th season. A path leads down through the cool forest to the yoga deck on Silsersee Lake. You can sail or surf on Silvaplanersee Lake, or rent a kayak or canoe. And those who aren’t too timid are welcome to take a dip in the icy water. The days pass pleasantly in this way, interrupted only by a game of tennis or golf, a horseback trail ride or a trip into the mountains. Electric mountain bikes are available for guests who would otherwise be daunted by the hilly terrain. You can also just look out of the window and enjoy the green of the fir trees and meadows, the blue of the water and the white of the glaciers – a color combination that never loses its appeal. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the Waldhaus started opening in the winter season too. “The hotel was originally designed for the summer, you can still tell in a way. It really comes into its own in the summer,” say Urs Kienberger, who ran the hotel for many years and whose great-grandparents established it. “Summer has an extra dimension because of the colors, which are missing in the winter.” Tourism in the Engadin began when it started to become popular to leave the city during the summer and retreat into the country. Friedrich Nietzsche spent seven summers in Sils in the 1880s, walking along the lake shore every day with his red parasol. St. Moritz, a mere 10 kilometers away, was already well-known worldwide as a spa. During the summer months, it drew mainly aristocrats and wealthy English, who, after an arduous journey, often stayed until the fall. That people starting going in the winter was the result of a wager, which attained legendary status. In 1864, Johannes Badrutt, founder of the Kulm Hotel, (a relatively new establishment at the time), promised a few of his English guests that if they returned in the winter, they could sit in the sun in their shirtsleeves. Should this not be the case, he would reimburse their travel expenses. His guests took up the wager, returned to St. Moritz and went back to London with a tan. Imitators followed suit and the result was a winter season that outperformed everything else.

The mountains were now synonymous with snowy pistes and extravagant parties. For a long time, people seemed to have forgotten that the Alps in the summer were perhaps even more beautiful than in the winter. Walking in the mountains appeared to be something only retired people did. But that began to change even before the epidemic started. Those who owned a chalet in the mountains withdrew there during lockdown, and ended up staying. Others realized, perhaps for the first time, how beautiful their own country was. Maybe they even noticed that the mountains were at least as restorative as the beach. And that to find happiness, you didn’t have to travel halfway around the world. The power of the mountains. Their tranquility pervades us and makes us strong. Gazing at the majestic peaks, we feel our day-to-day problems fall away. Seeing the big picture helps to put things into perspective. Conquering the mountain is intoxicating, it makes every fiber of our being come alive. To switch off in the mountains is to concentrate on what is important, one step at a time. During the summer months, the Gstaad Palace hotel in Berner Oberland, Switzerland, rents out a jewel of a mountain hut dating from 1783: the Walig Hütte, which represents a completely new type of luxury. There’s nothing to see except the spectacular panorama. Reservations for the Walig, which Condé Nast Traveller designated “Best Wilderness Hotel,” fill up quickly, although there is no shower and only an outhouse rather than a spa area. For this back-to-basics experience, Palace guests spend 1,800 Swiss francs a night for two. There may be no internet, but there’s plenty of privacy – along with meadows redolent of wild flowers, and cows that wake you at the break of day. Andrea Scherz, the Palace owner, says: “Slowly and steadily, the summer trend has been growing over the years.” His guests are looking for intact nature. Some seek the added thrill of paragliding or white-water rafting, while others are eager to show their children where milk and cheese come from. “We’re also seeing more youthful guests. After going to Saint-Tropez, Ibiza or Mallorca, some come to us from mid-August onward for a rest from all the partying.” An absolute hit: the 50-meter outdoor pool with its view of the mountains, which was built almost 100 years ago. Last year, a pool bar was added to the PISCINE area that serves everything you could possibly wish for, and there’s a DJ playing on the weekends. Climate change has also helped to create the year-round Alpine season. When relying on snow became increasingly unfeasible, municipalities began to think up new ways of drawing visitors. They opened the lifts – otherwise closed in the summer – to mountain bikers and hikers, established music festivals, golf tournaments and vintage car rallies. According to a property market expert in Kitzbühel, the summer plays an important role for people who are thinking about buying a house: “Many viewings are in the summertime.” Most property buyers still want to spend Christmas in their own chalet, “but for city people, escaping their scorching penthouse apartments in the summer is an added incentive.” Even people from North Germany are increasingly moving their primary residence to Tyrol. “Because even the Hamburg-based entrepreneur thinks: I can commute, and give my family and myself the chance to enjoy an Alpine lifestyle.” Would you like to know more?

e returned to West Africa, to his place of birth in Gando. Could hardly wait to give the tiny village in Burkina Faso what it so badly needed – it’s own school. At the young age of 7, he had had to leave his parents, his siblings and his home when his father sent him, his eldest son, to stay with relatives and attend school in the city. The schoolhouse there was close and stifling, like a furnace. Burkina Faso is one of the world’s poorest countries, ranking 182 of 189 on the United Nations Human Development Index.

In 2001, while still a student of architecture at the Technical University in Berlin, Diébédo Francis Kéré set off for Africa. He went to build a school so that the children in his village would finally have a place to learn to read and write – an elementary school where they wouldn’t fall asleep in the searing spring and autumn heat nor be swept away by the torrential summer rains. It didn’t take that much at all: three flatroofed structures made of red bricks covered by a single tin roof that curved into the airstream like an airplane wing and, held up only by thin metal rods, appeared to be floating. Looking at it, some might recognize an affinity with the buildings of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, whose Neue Nationalgalerie museum is just a short distance from the university classrooms and studios in Berlin. But the primary school in Gando is much airier than that classic example of international modernism – it’s more economical and thus more suited to our time. “Those are very cheap rods you see under the roof,” explains Kéré. “They’re reinforcing bars, the ones that usually disappear inside concrete to strengthen it.” The construction still manages to channel the wind, which passes across the masonry roofs, cooling the classrooms to a downright luxurious temperature. And it does so entirely without air conditioning, without electricity out of the wall. So the architect who won the Aga Khan Prize in 2004 completed his first project before he’d even earned his degree. “Ultimately, I began studying architecture because I wanted to learn how to build,” he once said in an interview with the broadcaster Deutsche Welle. “But I was lucky to have such good professors in Berlin.” Professors like Peter Herrle or Ingrid Goetz who urged him to finish his studies and earn a degree. Later, he became a sought-after teacher himself: at the Technical University in Munich, at Harvard, Yale and the Swiss Architecture Academy in Mendrisio. Francis Kéré (as he is generally known), was born in 1965. He is a slender, elegant man who

moves with ease and deliberation; his features are relaxed. When he gives talks – and he often gets up on a podium to describe his work – he captivates audiences with his charming, friendly manner. He likes to tell the story of the women in his village who used to fumble a few coins from the folds of their dresses when he set off for the town again as a small boy. Or that of the seven or eight laborers from Gando who joined him in jumping up and down like children on a brick masonry arch to demonstrate its strength despite the fragility of it construction. There’s even a photo, and all of them are laughing. Moments like this give a fine intimation of Kéré’s high energy and sense of purpose. In March, the Hyatt Foundation in Chicago awarded him the coveted Pritzker Prize, a kind of Nobel prize for intelligent and innovative architecture and design. The distinction put Kéré in the same league as S ANAA, Herzog & de Meuron, Sir Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Tadao Ando. In a statement full of respect but also resonating with sheer amazement, the jury wrote: “He knows from within that architecture is not about the object, but the objective; not the product, but the process.” In any case, the primary school in Gando was just the beginning. It would be followed by teachers’ housing, an extension several years later and a school library in 2019. A secondary school for older students is currently under construction too. According to Kéré, 80 percent of the inhabitants in his village used to be illiterate, including his own father. But the number of students has meanwhile grown from 120 to 700. It’s difficult to express architectural success more strongly. And it was a community effort right from the start. The people in his village understood what the prodigal was offering. While still in Berlin, and with the help of his fellow students, Kéré used crowdfunding to raise the necessary money; only a modest sum was needed for this transformational project. And if any of the villagers were still unsure about the architect’s intentions, Kéré, the

orator, put their doubts at rest. After all, he was the son of the village elder, and the first to be sent to an unfamiliar place in order to attend school. Lined up in procession, men, women and children helped to haul the clay, mix it with cement and fire it into bricks; they compacted the ground to the rhythm of their tradition, all working together, using wooden tampers and their feet, brushing it smooth and polishing it with stones until it was a soft as a baby’s bottom. Kéré, his shirt casually untucked, takes a few dance steps in demonstration: That’s how they compacted the earth. As if taking part in a festive celebration. The choice of building material was self-evident: Gando’s bare, sparse surroundings provide nothing but clay and red sand. And perhaps some tough eucalyptus wood. Kéré made it into a principle: Location determines material. Local quarry stone for the Startup L ions Campus (2021) on Lake Turkana in K enya, cast clay for the Burkina Institute of Technology (2020) in Koudougou. For the Tippet Rise Art Center in the northwestern state of Montana in the U.S., the architect used slices of timber that foresters had discarded, in other words scrap wood, to build the Xylem pavilion (2019), a meditation and gathering space whose design references and is modeled on traditional structures in Dogon culture in Mali, West Africa – and whose building material grew within sight of the pavilion. “No healthy tree was felled or otherwise damaged for this project,” Kéré stated. At the same time: Austerity doesn’t just teach pragmatism. It cultivates respect. This is the dual message that Kéré formulates in all of his projects, be it a shelter at the head of a trail in the Rocky Mountains or a parliament building in his home country, the monumental structure of which palpably conveys to his fellow citizens what it means to participate in a democratic process: our parliament, our country, our future. Regardless of where his buildings are located – in Mali or Mozambique, Montana or Miami, London or Weil am Rhein in Germany, and regardless whether a structure was built to provide temporary protection and shade to festivalgoers in California or ensure longterm medical care in a bitterly poor country, the message is always the same: Architecture arises from within a community and its purpose is to serve it. Also: Architecture has a responsibility to preserve the balance in nature, the sustainability of resources and the future of our climate. Producing cement already causes eight percent of global emissions of greenhouse gases. Aesthetics follow function. And thoughtful consideration.

That’s a surprisingly self-effacing attitude for a top-league architect – but it’s one that also points the way forward for the future of the trade. Humility as opposed to monumental pomp, commitment to community rather than gestures of triumph. And a sense of responsibility toward form, which for far too long has reflected personal pride instead of serving a collective need. Kéré spends a good portion of his time surrounded by computer screens and cardboard architectural models in the light-filled rooms of his office in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district. His face bears the ritual scars from cuts performed on his skin as a child. He came to Germany as a young man of 20 to learn the cabinetmaking trade in 1985, started university ten years later and ten years after that, in 2005, opened his own architecture firm in what used to be a workshop in a rear courtyard building – right here at Arndtstraße 34. These days, Kéré has a good dozen employees. For years, he has been a dual citizen of Germany as well as Burkina Faso. He pulls out a photograph. It shows a large group of perhaps 40 or 50 people beneath a large tree somewhere in Africa. They’re wearing loose, colorful robes, their heads wrapped in scarves. Many of them have come by bicycle. They sit close together in the long shadow of the afternoon. Explaining the ancient principle, Kéré says: “You come together and sit down to discuss the affairs of the community. That’s the beginning of true democracy.” What a model for architecture! In the summer of 2017, this same kind of tree emerged amid the greenery of Kensington Gardens – an enormous structure with a shining crown of steel and wood and transparent panels that protected those beneath it from the rain, provided shade from the sun and let in the light just like regular foliage. And since London is not in Africa, the architect surrounded his temporary Serpentine Gallery pavilion with four segments of protective wall, as dark blue in color as the African night but open enough to make the gathering space accessible from all sides. The National Assembly building for the capital Ouagadougou was a similar project, one where every visitor would experience his or her own share of the community. During the “Black Spring” of 2014, when the people of Burkina Faso rose up against their corrupt political elite, the old French colonial building burned to the ground. Kéré took advantage of the moment and the empty space to design a huge pyramid with views over the surrounding countryside. It had terraces covered with greenery, exhibition spaces and market stands, and was accessible to all. This design may still e xist only on
“Everyone deserves quality,” the architect insists, “everyone deserves luxury, everyone deserves comfort.” That’s precisely why he punctuated the roof of the school library in Gando with circular openings, rings cut from clay pots that belonged to village residents. These pots without bottoms or lids provide agreeable light from above and allow the air to circulate – as well as creating a visible connection to everyday village life. This is also why the Lycée Schorge Secondary School, located on the outskirts of Koudougou, is built like a kraal around an open yet protected gathering place. And why Kéré based the structure of the Surgical Clinic and Health Center in Léo on a traditional village of clay houses. Defining one’s own center is the intention behind it. And the National Assembly building that is currently under construction in Porto-Novo, the capital of neighboring Republic of Benin, is based on its role model – the giant African Palaver tree. The Pritzker Prize has been conferred on an outstanding architect or architect duo every year since 1979. As incredible as it may sound, Diébédo Francis Kéré is the first African architect to be honored with this distinction. And not only that: He is the only living architect in Germany to have been granted the prestigious award. Would you like to know more?

paper, but with this project, the architect evertheless grabbed the opportunity to build n a new political culture in the poor and so often humiliated country of his birth. “I hope to bring about a paradigm shift,” he says, “and encourage p eople to dream and take risks.” Kéré is a fighter. Perhaps it was his collaboration with the late German theater director and performance artist Christoph Schlingensief that led Kéré to the realization that even the most carefully considered sensitivity to local conditions and global dangers requires a degree of orchestration if you want to convince audiences, users and the general public of your intentions in this respect. Until his early death in 2010, Schlingensief was committed to the project they were working on together: an opera village some 30 kilometers from Ouagadougou, the capital, a village where everything would come together: fine art and health care, architecture and literacy programs, African film and sustainable agriculture, classical opera and the first cries of a newborn child. The opera house itself still hasn’t been completed, but other houses and studios around it are already filled with life. It’s a culture center without a center, but still a place in which to forge something like an identity, to take pride in one’s roots, even as a citizen of a country that ranks 182 on the global prosperity index.

I
t’s five in the morning and the streets of New York are nearly empty as Lewis Miller rumbles up Sixth Avenue in his truck. The lights turn green for him at every intersection, which pleases him: This has to be a good sign. Soon, Miller will be bringing chaos to the order around him. But what kind of rules forbid you from sending jolts of joy through other people at the break of day?
Contrasts, a crazy sense of humor, playfulness and boundless energy are what drive flower artist Lewis Miller.
The floral designer and expert creator of extravagant flower arrangements for celebrations and parties and feels a small surge of adrenaline run through him on this morning in Manhattan. The back of his truck is piled high with thousands of amber yellow and deep red dahlias – flowers that had graced a glittering gala event just the evening before. Very soon, Miller will find a new place to put them: a graffiti covered house wall, a trash can, maybe even a construction-site fence or the entrance to a subway – and in a matter of minutes, the gray new day will explode in an orgy of bright, blooming color. No one commissioned this job, nor does Miller have a permit. A few joggers pass by in search of early morning exercise. Miller calls his floral invasion of public space a “flower flash,” and the colorful arrays couldn’t be more suited for Instagram. Brilliant blue hydrangeas, brazenly pink carnations, lilies, gladiolas, roses and delphiniums. And not just a few, either, but at least as many as you can hold in your arms. Usually more. And whatever the California-raised floral designer can get his hands on. His truck is equipped for delivering flowers to important events like weddings, balls or fashion shows. One night in October in 2016 it struck him – the contrast between the glorious, lush beauty of his bouquets and table decorations and the dismal urban canyons of the surrounding city. So the flower guerilla went to work. Sometimes he’ll decorate an equestrian statue, other times a mailbox or a traffic island. Miller’s impulsive, artistic act of letting flowers loose upon the world is at the same time an attack on the conventions of art history. For centuries, flowers symbolized human emotions. The intimate delicacy of a waterlily pond by Claude Monet – lovely to behold; the unabashed lasciviousness of a blooming orchid in a Georgia O’Keeffe painting, pistil and stamins naked, their intention explicit; or the timid indication of a poisonous plant in the portrait of
a hated despot: Entire libraries are dedicated to the subtle and not-so-subtle intricacies of floral symbolism. A s ingle pansy is weighed down with attributed meaning, as are funeral lilies, yellow roses and the fragile anemone. In Japan, competing schools of the ikebana art of flower arranging make the heaviness of the whole world appear to be floating: in a budding branch, in two blades of grass, in a lotus flower. Miller prefers to help himself to the lot. When he buries a bus stop beneath luminous sunflowers, it’s a Vincent van Gogh, except in short pants. The floral arrangements by this New York flower artist celebrate both sides of the baroque – the voluptuousness and the transience. And he’s hardly the only one doing it. From London to Los Angeles, from Antwerp to rural Somerset in England, virtuoso designers like Eric Buterbaugh and Georgie Newbery are discovering – and celebrating! – natural luxury with fresh, audacious displays. The list goes on: Eric Chauvin in Paris, Makoto Azuma in Tokyo, Victoria Brotherson, Olivier Giugni, Mark Colle – and always, at the peak of their beauty, the luxurious blooms already hint at decay. Abundance, says Lewis Miller. Contrasts, playfulness, a bit of crazy humor. Above all, boundless energy – that’s what drives him. “I’m in the fantasy business,” he says with a directness that is perhaps found only in this city. “I transform moments into memories.” And with all due respect to his paying customers, whose significant moments he festoons with magnificent floral arrangements, the real fun begins the day after the big event, that’s what gives him a kick. When passersby stop in surprise, unable to believe what they’re seeing, perhaps reach for their phone and take a picture – and break out in a joyful smile. That’s what makes the whole endeavor worth it. Like the evening several years ago when the designer left his studio with a large bouquet of peonies in his arms. The blossoms had already opened, perhaps too far for them to be sold as a promise of something still to come: They had reached their prime, a moment of truth filled with anticipation. What better time to reach out and grab life with both hands... Walking down the street, Miller felt the eyes of everyone who approached him, recognized the hunger in their gaze – for beauty, color, temptation. A hunger for now! And that’s exactly what flowers are for. It’s the reason why nature puts on a display of such luxurious, wasteful profusion in the first place. In a world dominated by economics, speculation and waiting, an explosion of hydrangeas, roses and gladiolas is like a peek of paradise. Would you like to know more?

Vietnam’s arguably most colorful theater complex occupies 2,000 square meters in the basement of a shopping mall in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon. A cinematic space conceived by Vietnamese design studio Module K, it is dominated by flamingo pink, ocean green and bright orange. For the striking interior, where geometric shapes have transformed the original lines of the building, the architects took inspiration from iconic places in old Saigon, and pay homage to well-known landmarks in Vietnam’s largest city. The ticket counter is based on the Ben Thanh Market while the turquoise dome recalls the Central Post Office dating from colonial times. A circular seating area in the strong blue of the Beta logo references the facade of the Municipal Opera House. Even the city’s ubiquitous pigeons are present in the shape of specially produced pendant lights hanging from the ceiling. Asymmetrical pink arches recall Tan Dinh Church and the decorative floor tiles feature an Asian design. The individual rooms are visually linked by different blocks of color while the corridor to the entrance hall boasts all the colors of the rainbow. Seven theaters provide seating for 1,000 people. Unlike traditional theaters, where the interior furnishings are usually dark, these are dominated by strong hues: Backlit reliefs in nuances of orange and lemon contrast starkly with the turquoise-colored seats, and the psychedelic graphics that decorate the bathrooms vie for attention with the blockbuster screenings themselves. For the Beta Media chain, which operates several cinemas in northern Vietnam, this project is an initial foray into the south. Module K’s expressive designs were chosen over those submitted by 30 other design firms. The hope is that the urbane look with its Instagrammable elements will attract young people in particular, lure them away from their laptops and become a place to meet, get together and hang out – in addition to watching films.
