L’impegno di Cute Project comprende una residenza d’artista. Cute invita ogni anno un artista diverso al quale chiede di interpretare la missione e di ideare un tema sul quale lavorare. Quest’anno l’artista è Monica Carocci e il tema “sfatiamo i falsi miti”. Il progetto si è sviluppato attraverso i social network sui quali gli utenti facevano delle domande riguardanti la missione e la vita in Africa e noi ci impegnavamo a rispondere in tempo reale con dei video, ora pubblicati sul nostro canale YouTube e sul nostro sito, www.cute-Project.org. Questo libro ora vuole presentare la realtà africana proprio attraverso queste domande con l’intento di farvi conoscere l’Africa che abbiamo nel cuore e di farvi percepire la vicinanza, la normalità e la voglia di crescita che incontriamo. Cute Project includes in its missions the presence of an artist. Every year Cute invites an artist, always different, who is asked to interpret the mission according to a theme to focus on. This year the artist is Monica Carocci and the theme is “Let’s disprove some false myths!”. The project has been developed through social networks where followers made questions about the mission and life in Africa. We tried to answer as soon as possible with videos, which are now on line on our YouTube channel as well as on our website, www.cute-Project.org. This book wants to show the African world through these questions and our intention is to let you know our Africa, that is, the country we have in our hearts, which means people’s closeness as well as their wish to improve and live a normal life that we meet every day.

What is the story of Cute Project Onlus?

Cute è nata nel 2012 grazie a un gruppo molto eterogeneo di persone in cui confluiscono varie abilità: ci sono anche medici e infermieri, ma molti di noi fanno tutt’altro e questo ci rende davvero multitasking. L’obiettivo di Cute è la formazione teorica e pratica del personale sanitario dei paesi in via di sviluppo, nell’ambito della chirurgia plastica ricostruttiva, con indirizzo specifico rivolto alla cura delle ustioni e dei loro esiti.

Cute was born in 2012 thanks to a very heterogeneous group of people where you can find a variety of skills: there are also doctors and nurses but many of us do very different jobs and this allows us to be really multitasking. Cute has as its aim, theoretical and practical training of healthcare staff in developing countries, in the field of reconstructive plastic surgery, specifically addressed to the treatment of burns and their outcomes.

Cute Project persegue l’obiettivo mediante: . lo svolgimento di missioni umanitarie a carattere formativo con coinvolgimento diretto dei medici e delle altre figure sanitarie locali mediante lezioni teoriche e pratiche in sala operatoria per consentire l’autonomizzazione del personale sanitario del luogo; . l’istituzione di borse di studio in Italia, rivolte al personale sanitario dei paesi in via di sviluppo e finalizzate al completamento del processo di acquisizione delle competenze specialistiche; . lo svolgimento di attività sanitarie e didattiche a favore delle persone in difficoltà sul territorio nazionale e regionale (attivazione di nuovi ambulatori medici e corsi formativi).

Cute Project achieves its objectives as follows: . planning humanitarian missions aimed at training local staff, physicians and healthcare professionals through theoretical and practical lessons in operating room to help local healthcare staff to be autonomous; . granting scholarships to healthcare personnel from developing countries in order to study in Italy and complete their training to acquire specialized skills; . organizing healthcare and training activities addressed to people in need at national and local level (setting up new clinics of plastic surgery and training courses). Over the last years we have carried out a number of humanitarian missions in Africa with surgery, medical and physiotherapy activities as well as theoretical and practical lessons: diagnosis and treatment of burns and scars, bendages, how to use negative pressure devices to treat loss of substance, prevention of burns, rehabilitation techniques for patients with post-burn scars, Basic Life Support with manual defribillator, how to find peripheral venous access through ultrasound, medications in plastic surgery (burns, implants,surgical wounds) together with their operational protocols, surgical techniques in labiopalatoschisis. Every year in our missions we leave materials for medical treatments, medications, medical and surgical equipment, and we keep in touch with the local personnel who follow the patients already treated and continue to carry on the specific projects. Moreover, the Southafrican therapists Evanthia Pavli and Roxanne Wentzel have created a new programme of rehabilitation aimed at increasing the process of training of the local health personnel as well as the treatment of the patients in Benin and Uganda, especially as for the making of pressure garments for the treatment of burns, leaving on site the specific equipment and the materials to make them.

In questi anni abbiamo realizzato diverse missioni formative in Africa con attività chirurgica, medica, fisioterapica e lezioni teoriche e pratiche: diagnosi e terapia di ustioni e cicatrici, bendaggi, utilizzo di apparecchiature a pressione negativa per il trattamento delle perdite di sostanza, prevenzione delle ustioni, tecniche di riabilitazione nei pazienti con cicatrici post-ustione, Basic Life Support con defibrillatore manuale, ricerca dell’accesso venoso periferico mediante l’ecografia, medicazioni in chirurgia plastica (ustioni, innesti, ferite chirurgiche) con consegna di protocolli operativi, tecniche chirurgiche della labiopalatoschisi. Nelle varie missioni ogni anno lasciamo in loco materiale da medicazione, farmaci, strumentario chirurgico e medico, e rimaniamo in contatto con il personale locale che segue i pazienti trattati e che continua a portare avanti progetti specifici dedicati. Inoltre le terapiste sudafricane Evanthia Pavli e Roxanne Wentzel hanno creato un nuovo programma di riabilitazione, per incrementare ulteriormente il percorso di formazione del personale sul posto e la cura dei pazienti trattati in Benin e in Uganda, in particolare per la costruzione di indumenti elasto compressivi per gli ustionati, lasciando in loco lo strumentario e i materiali specifici per crearli. 7

Ma dove lo trovate il tempo?

Se poi si vede che, con una buona organizzazione, non solo si può donare del tempo agli altri ma si possono migliorare anche le nostre vite, cambiando le nostre priorità, allora il volontariato si può fare. Questo è un modo di fare volontariato tra professionisti, con il proprio lavoro e le proprie competenze ma che come organizzano i propri impegni giornalieri inseriscono le attività no profit. Nel moderno approccio agli altri si dice oggi che impegnarsi per il prossimo è “win-win”. È vincente per le nostre vite, per le stesse persone che si dedicano ad un progetto sociale. Cresciamo in competenze e sicuramente diventiamo persone migliori. Ma è anche “win” per la società stessa e questo lo vediamo tutto l’anno nei volti dei nostri pazienti, nella gratitudine di tutti colleghi che abbiamo formato e, non ultimo, nelle famiglie coinvolte dal nostro elefantino Cuty Firephant. La risposta quindi è, non abbiate paura di farvi coinvolgere in un progetto di volontariato. Il tempo è una risorsa se usato bene, una scusa se c’è poca organizzazione. Il coinvolgimento è la chiave di tutto… noi abbiamo creato e organizzato Cute Project come la rosa e la volpe del Piccolo Principe… ora ne siamo responsabili e questo anche grazie al tempo che ci abbiamo dedicato.

Cute Project ONLUS, nata nel 2012, in 6 anni è cresciuta rapidamente, puntando sulla concretezza dei progetti. Ci rendiamo conto che la mole di attività che svolgiamo tutto l’anno possa fare impressione, vista dall’esterno. Un gruppo parte, un medico africano arriva, gli ambulatori del Sermig vanno avanti tutto l’anno, i laboratori di Cuty Firephant coinvolgono molti bambini durante l’anno scolastico, il corso per infermieri, un altro gruppo che riparte e tante altre attività ci vedono attivi protagonisti La nostra quotidiana vita frenetica ci fa sembrare che il tempo sia sempre poco, ma ne siamo sicuri? But where do you find time?

Then, if we see that we can give some time to other people and at the same time also improve our lives, somehow changing our priorities, that means that voluntary work can be done. This is voluntary work done by professionals through their work and their skills. As well as they organise their work, they also organise their no-profit activities. In a new approach towards helping other people, nowadays we say that it is “win-win”. It means that it is winning for our lives, for the ones who commit themselves to a social project. We gain extra skills and we also become better people. But it is also “win” for our society and we can really realise that when we see the faces of our patients, the gratitude of all the colleagues we have trained and, last but not least, the families of the children involved in the activities of Cuty Firephant. So the answer is, don’t be afraid of getting involved in a voluntary project. Time is a resource if you use it well, an excuse if you aren’t organised enough. Getting involved is the key, we have created and organised Cute project like the rose and the fox in “Le Petit Prince”... now we are responsible for it and all this thanks to the time we have devoted to it.

Le Petit Prince Antoine de Saint-Exupéry It is the most frequent question. Cute Project ONLUS, born in 2012, has developed rapidly in 6 years, relying on its concrete projects. We realise that the number of activities we carry out over a year may seem impressive, if seen from the outside. A group leaves, an African doctor comes, the clinics at Sermig go on over the whole year, the Cuty Firephant workshops get many children involved during the school year, the course for nurses, another group leaves again and more extra activities see us involved actively. Our frantic daily life gives us the impression that time is never enough, but is it really that way? Here is our advice, the first sound advice by Cute Project to the ones who are around us: organise your time.

Arte e volontariato?

Art and volunteering?

Quando mi è stato chiesto di scrivere su questa nuova avventura con Cute Project e Monica Carocci, mi sono chiesto qual è il filo conduttore che ci lega; l’Arte ci ha fatto conoscere ma non basta, è stata la scintilla, il pretesto, ma non è certo il vero motivo. Cute Project è un’organizzazione non lucrativa di utilità sociale che opera prevalentemente in paesi in via di sviluppo con carattere formativo e con il coinvolgimento diretto di medici e figure sanitarie locali. Collezionissima è invece una associazione nata in un incubatore virtuale con l’obiettivo di sostenere, valorizzare e divulgare l’arte vissuta e vista dalla parte del collezionista ma con gli occhi degli artisti. Monica Carocci vive la sua arte creando universi onirici fatti di piccoli frammenti analogici in bianco e nero, portandoci in una dimensione spazio-temporale in continuo mutamento e costringendoci ad annullare e ridefinire luoghi e personaggi dei suoi scatti. Tre situazioni diverse che mirano a ridefinire il rapporto con se stessi e con gli altri, tutte e tre caratterizzate da una profonda volontà di… dare più che ricevere. Ecco forse è questo il vero motivo che ci spinge a continuare a credere nelle residenze di artista con Cute Project: dare ad altri, qui da noi e nel nostro quotidiano, la possibilità di riflettere su queste sofferenze per quanto alleviate dai nostri medici e filtrate dalla sensibilità di un artista. Siamo fieri di aver contribuito e grati a Monica di aver creduto in questo progetto.

When I was told to write about this new adventure with Cute Project and Monica Carocci, I wondered about the link between us; Art has been the spark which let us get together but this is not the real reason, for sure! Cute Project is a non-profit organisation which operates in the social field mainly in developing countries and whose aim is training of local health staff. Collezionissima is instead an association, born in a virtual environment, whose aim is to support, value and spread living art from the point of view of collectors but through artists’ eyes. Monica Carocci experiences her art creating dream worlds made of small analogue fragments in black and white. She takes us into a space-temporal dimension which is always changing so that we are obliged to cancel and redefine the places and characters in her shots. Three different situations which aim at redefining the relatioship with ourselves and the others, all of them characterised by a deep interest in ...giving more than receiving. That’s it! This is probably the real reason which keeps us believing in the role of artists together with Cute Project: giving to others, here in our country and in our daily life, the opportunity to think about those sufferings even if releaved by our doctors and filtered by the artist’s perception. Many children we treat surgically are not orphans and have their families, who love and take care of them. We have also treated children who werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t with their parents but they were lovingly taken care by adults. Unfortunately, there are orphans, too, who are still waiting for a family and live in orphanages. In order to adopt them, we have to follow the standard procedures of international adoption.

Molti dei bimbi che operiamo non sono orfani e sono seguiti e amati dalle loro famiglie. Ci Ă¨ capitato di seguire anche bimbi che non avevano la loro famiglia di origine, ma erano stati affidati ad adulti che se ne prendevano cura molto bene. Purtroppo perĂ˛ ci sono anche orfani che non hanno ancora una collocazione definitiva e vivono in orfanatrofi e per adottarli bisogna seguire le regolari procedure di adozione internazionale.

We don‘t come back tanned, although the sun is shining there, since we start our activities very early in the morning and finish very late in the evening. Normally, at four p.m. we have already done about ten operations and we go on until, at least, eight p.m. So, when we finish the sun has set. Actually, we don‘t go on a mission to take advantage of the sun in the sky but to try to make the eyes of out patients shine again... and that makes our heart warm.

Non torniamo abbronzati, nonostante un sole splendente, in quanto iniziamo l’attività al mattino molto presto e finiamo alla sera molto tardi. Alle quattro del pomeriggio in media abbiamo già effettuato una decina di interventi e andiamo avanti fino alle otto di sera, se va bene, e pertanto quando usciamo il sole è già tramontato. Del resto non veniamo qui per il sole nel cielo, ma per cercare di far splendere di nuovo il sole negli occhi dei nostri pazienti... e con quel sole ci scaldiamo il cuore.

At the moment they aren’t. There are no civil wars going on in Benin or Uganda, so I can answer immediately. Besides, safety of the team who leave on a mission is basic for Cute Project and the places where we have decided to be present, are countries we go back annually because we find collaboration, hospitality and political stability. In 2017 I had the opportunity to participate to both missions and the most “dangerous” event I experienced was the crossing of the road because of the heavy traffic and the “dangerous” driving on dirt roads. The population is friendly and I never felt in danger.

Attualmente no. In Benin e in Uganda non sono in atto guerre civili dunque la risposta mi viene spontanea. Inoltre la sicurezza dell’equipe che parte per le missioni è fondamentale per Cute Project, e quindi le realtà dove abbiamo scelto di poter operare sono paesi in cui torniamo ogni anno perché troviamo collaborazione, ospitalità e stabilità politica. Nel 2017 ho avuto la possibilità di partecipare ad entrambe le missioni e la cosa più “pericolosa” che ho riscontrato è l’attraversamento pedonale a causa del traffico intenso e della guida “spericolata” su strade per lo più dissestate. La popolazione è pacifica e non mi sono mai sentita in pericolo.
