rom swinging himself into the saddle at the tender age of six to emerge as an excellent polo player; from setting his sight “on the target” to become a national record holder in skeet shooting; from fighting a decade-long legal battle for granting citizens the right to fly the Tricolour throughout the year to making his presence felt in political corridors as a parliamentarian,

steel tycoon Naveen Jindal has been a man on a mission. A visit to Jindal’s office in New Delhi reveals the many shades of his personality. While a glass case carrying an array of his shooting medals is bound to catch your attention, objects pertaining to polo, skeet shooting, models of aircrafts—some of which Jindal have piloted—are also pervasive in the office. At times, fitness freak Jindal doesn’t mind holding his

the show meetings perched on the saddle of an exercise machine installed very close to his chair. The never-say-die attitude of the 40-year-old industrialist has made him an iconic figure. Jindal’s passion for sports since early childhood started shaping up the professional inside him at an early stage. His unending love for polo and shooting made him acquire quick reflexes, as well as the power of decision making, which, in a way,

also prepared him to face business challenges. And, today, Jindal has indeed come a long way, with his Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) boasting a healthy consolidated sales of Rs 13.111 crore and over Rs 3,900 crore in profits. Of the three domains—sports, business and politics, it was the world of sports in which Jindal first proved his mettle. Born on March 9, 1970, in Haryana, Jindal became quite serious about his riding

lessons after his father and Congress leader, the late OP Jinda,l gifted him a horse on his sixth birthday. After becoming a seasoned rider, Jindal shifted his attention to polo. His devotion towards the game made him an integral part of the Indian polo circuit, particularly when he formed one of India’s finest polo teams—The Jindal Steel and Power polo. Jindal’s passion for polo can be gauged from the fact that his sprawling 30-acre farm is a training centre for as many as 40 of the finest horses and ponies. “From childhood, I was interested in horses…When I came to Delhi, I became a member of the President’s Estate Polo Club in 1987, and here, I tried my hand at polo. In no time, I was hooked. My own polo team happened in 1994. I guess it was a gradual progression: From being a rookie player to a passionate one, then to buying horses, hiring professionals to play with us and finally formalising a team,” recalls Jindal. He himself admits that at the sports grounds he acquired certain skills that shaped his character. “During my active years as a player, I learnt skills that would live with me for a lifetime. It has shaped my character as a team player and taught me to use horsepower with tact and patience…As a player, one learns to take risks, handle February 2012 | www.lifestyleliving.in

aggression and work in speed.” Jindal, an irrespressible polo enthusiast, has a piece of advice for making the game popular in India, where every sport comes after cricket—“People have been saying that polo, as a sport, requires greater corporate involvement, better state support, et al. Agreed. More companies should come forward as it not only helps the cause of the game and the players, it will also help them in building their corporate image. Nowadays, most brands sponsor tournaments. But, I strongly advocate they should come and sponsor teams instead. That way, tournaments will become more popular.” Like polo, Jindal has been equally passionate about shooting. After having armed himself with a rifle at the age of 15, Jindal extensively focussed on the sport, and won a number of national shooting championships besides

representing India at several international tournaments. A trained pilot, Jindal also made news in Feb 2011, for flying French Rafale—a fighter aircraft—as a copilot in Bangalore. Was Jindal anxious? Any fear of manoeuvres?“I have done the F-16 and F-18. When the Rafale opportunity came to me, I said this is going to be a different flight, let me take it… Not fear and anxiety, there’s confidence and excitement,’ Jindal replied, moments before taking the co-pilot seat. Jindal, who earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in the early 1990s, achieved the unique distinction of being the first alumni from India of an American varsity to have an educational institute named after him. Recognising Jindal’s achievements in the field of entrepreneurship and public service, UTD, a few months ago, named its school of management after the

parliamentarian, who represents Kurukshetra—his home district. Jindal’s involvement in politics dates back to his student days. While studying at UTD, Jindal was felicitated with Student Leader of the Year Award. As a business student at UTD, Jindal was exposed to the “flag culture” in America, where he noticed his American friends flaunting their country’s flag in one form or other. Inspired by frequent and proud displays of the US flag, Jindal returned to India and challenged India’s Flag Code, which had earlier allowed the display of the flag on public occasions only. Nearly a decade later, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Jindal. Jindal’s untiring efforts have transformed Kurukshetra from being a sleepy town to a modern, developed city, all set to become a major tourist destination. — ASIT SRIVASTAVA

THE HIND HOUSE, WARGRAVE, ENGLAND The Hind House is an interesting way to deal with overcrowding. The River Loddon runs alongside the home, so in floods, it’s inaccessible without taking a dip. That makes it all the more a reclusive hideaway, with guest, living and bedroom spaces in separate wings. The house is run by a computerised building management system that controls not just heating demands, but also lighting, solar control and audio-visual installations. The walls, floors and roofs are highly insulated using sheep’s wool insulation to create a highly efficient home. The house is a prime example of a building that uses natural materials that weather well, and an architecture that seeks out and embraces nature.

Australia, and in France’s Rhone Valley. The aromas and flavours of wild black fruit, with overtones of black pepper spice characterise this wine. The abundance of fruit sensations is often complemented by warm alcohol and gripping tannins. The Shiraz variety gives hearty, spicy reds. While Shiraz is used to produce many average wines it can produce some of the world’s finest, deepest, and darkest reds with intense flavours and excellent longevity. Merlot is easy to drink. Its softness has made it an "introducing" wine for new redwine drinkers. A key player in the Bordeaux blend, Merlot is also found in Italy, Romania, California, Washington State, Chile, Australia, etc. It is the fourth wine grape variety in terms of coverage, worldwide (after Sultanine Blanche, Airen Blanc and Grenache Noir). Typical scents include blackcherry, plums and herbal flavours. The texture is round but a middle palate gap is common. The Merlot type of wine is less tannic (rough) than Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon is widely accepted as one of the world’s best varieties. It is often blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot and usually undergoes oak treatment. It is found in the northern fringes, such as Germany. It is part of the great red Médoc wines of France, and among the finest reds in Australia, California and Chile. It is full-bodied, but firm and gripping when young. Malbec has its

origins in the French Bordeaux region and is grown in the Loire Valley in France, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and in the cooler regions of California. Generally, it produces an easy-drinking style, and is a well coloured wine that tastes of plums, berries, and spice. Pinot Noir is one of the noblest red wine grapes. It is difficult to grow, rarely blended, with no roughness. Found in Burgundy, France, Austria, California, Oregon, and New Zealand. The structure is delicate and fresh. The tannins are very soft; this is related to the low level of polyphenols. The aromatics are very fruity (cherry, strawberry, plum), often with notes of tea-leaf, damp earth, or worn leather. Sangiovese is produced in Italy’s Tuscany region and lately, in California. The primary style is medium-bodied with fresh berry and plum flavours. Barbera has similar attributes to Merlot and is of Italian origin, but also found in California. Typical taste is of juicy black cherry and plum fruit, a silky texture and excellent acidity.

What's the perfect scent to wear for a Valentine’s Day date? We help you set the scene for romance, with our favourite Valentine’s Day perfumes LA PRAIRIE SILVER RAIN The first fragrance from the top-of-the-line Swiss cosmetics brand, La Prairie Silver Rain creators were inspired by the phenomenon that takes place in spring in the mountains of the Alps. Rain is transformed into ice crystals of breathtaking beauty. During spring , these crystals melt and fall from a height of 1000 feet. This is called “ silver rain”. This fragrance includes rare ingredients from all over the world. Top notes include spicy green apple, citrusy-floral accord of Verbena Blossom from the South of France, dewy red fruits, anise oil from Thailand and bergamot from Calabria. At its heart, Moroccan red rose petals meet Chinese star magnolia, tropical Agarwood and night-blooming Indian jasmine, leaving a trail of warm red sandalwood, creamy Tonka bean from Venezuela, heliotrope, vanilla from Madagascar and a mix of different musks.

COME CLEAN

One of the best ways to relax after a hard day's work is under the shower. You can bring luxury into your bath experience by using some of the best luxury soaps available.

C

hanel fragrances for women can be found in their soap line as well. Choose from No 5, Coco, Madamoiselle, Allure or No 19. The Chanel No.5 bath soap is a creamy, longlasting, hard-milled soap with Vitamin E. It provides a gentle cleansing action, as it helps soothe and protect the skin. The soap leaves the skin lightly scented, with the now-and-forever fragrance of N°5, and it is gentle enough for the most delicate skin. At the turn of the century, Guerlain soaps were highly regarded. The sapoceti were made from whale fat (obviously no longer used) and scented with Guerlain’s various perfumes. Today, Guerlain is known for its soaps from the Habit Rougeand Shalimar range. Equally popular is the L'instant soap for women. L'instant soap is destined to become a classic by Guerlain. Feminine and sensual, L'instant is smooth and a sophisticated blend of citrus honey, magnolia and amber. This long lasting aroma is perfect for a romantic evening. Guerlain Shalimar Perfumed Soap cleanses your skin with a sumptuously rich lather. Deeply cleansing, softening and smoothing, this perfumed soap leaves skin looking feeling and smelling incredible. With spellbinding notes of jasmine, vanilla and opoponax, this addictive and sensual scent is an intimate symphony of

scent for languorous interludes. Guerlain Habit Rouge is a refreshing, oriental fragrance. It is a very masculine fragrance, with a blend of fresh citrus, lemon and mandarin, to which spices, bergamot, rosewood and basil are added. The fragrance is lifted with the addition of carnation, leather and vanilla. Guerlain Habit Rouge aftershave is a warm, sensual and daring fragrance for men and is perfect for use everyday. Amouage is one of the newest entries on the luxury beauty niche-but one of the best available. It's because the lines are made without any budget restraints and using the best of everything. The result is awesome-Dia, Gold, Reflection, Jubilation. Feel like royalty! Amouage Gold Soap is a perfumed soap that incorporates natural vegetable oils to maintain the balance essential for soft and healthy skin. Gold scent features top notes of rose, jasmine and lily of the valley, heart notes of myrrh patchouli orris and sandalwood, and bottom notes of ambergris, civet and musk. Amouage Jubilation Soap is a fragrant soap that captures the magic of timeless eternity with rich top notes of rose and ylang ylang in which myth and reality are expressed, using the finest frankincense from Oman. It appeals to the elegant, enigmatic and sophisticated woman who lives her life as an art form - evoking the

time, place and cultures she inhabits with the mystical allure of amber, musk, vetiver, myrrh, frankincense and patchouli. Amouage Reflection Soap has a lush green freshness reminiscent of morning dew in the spring time. A sophisticated bouquet of white flowers crowns the fragrance with richness and depth while embracing musks and woods wrapped with warm amber notes, and conferring a magic aura to the skin. Pure, radiant and intriguing, Reflection for Woman is a soap that expresses the inner self. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER Choose from one of the richest collections of Couture Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011-2012.Go Gaultier! A spectacle in every sense of the word, Gaultier's couture collection brashly sidetracked the feel-good sixties revival that characterised Chanel or the delicate, ethereal creations of Elie Saab or Valentino, and jumped into the punk era head on. Gaultier's collection is a blend of the iconic Parisian Cancan and London punk rebellion. The accent is on contemporary and rock. The silhouette is slim and tapered with the exception of hourglass dresses, which are slightly flared at the bottom. The black sheath dress is embellished with crystals, the classic pinstripe suit becomes contemporary thanks to super-slim leggings and the trench is transformed into a one -shoulder robe manteau. The multi-coloured punk headgears are gorgeous.

DOLCE AND GABBANA Look hot and stunning in one of Dolce and Gabbana’s ensembles. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana took a trip back to southern Italy in the 1950s and imprinted colourful vegetables onto models' dresses (think eggplants, hot peppers, zucchinis, and tomatoes.) There were also ‘floaty’ dresses (a D&G speciality in their 2011-2012 SS collection), bandeau tops baring midriffs, crochet shifts, corsets, and skirt suits. There was vibrant colour all over the place, but everything seemed to match and worked well together, from the sandals to the garlic clove earrings. And, the entire show was set to the beat of Sophia Loren's Mambo Italiano.

BETSEY JOHNSON Be irreverent and vivacious, like Betsey Johnson’s (New York) Fall 2011 collection. Her up-market Black Tag collection, as well as her Pink Patch collection showcased bright florals and prints. There were peplum jackets and skintight pants in black and white leopard prints. Red rompers over shiny red leopard tights were seen. Red plaid tartan bustiers were worn over long fuchsia skirts. While the collection on the runway was great on the models, the individual pieces were wearable for non-model types, too. Johnson’s clothes are edgy, colourful. Equally, the black lace-trimmed dresses, shoes and neck chokers are eminently wearable, as also are the draped hoods and skirts.

CHRISTIAN DIOR Enchant your partner in a John Galliano, old school full-skirted ball gown. Take a trip back to the era of the debutantes, when women wore cupcakes and acted like the pretty princesses they really were. Also from Galliano’s SS 2011 collection comes a sensual sixties’ sensibility in the form of skintight pencil skirts, gloves, and cinched blouses. Go along with the complete picture-blood red painted lips, perfectly coiffed hair, for a sophisticated and sexy look. Though the Dior couture woman is ultra-feminine, she is also bold and always in control. This is mirrored in the blood red silks, tucked, folded and bundled into strong, angular shapes and accessorised with black or red lurex gloves and some conceptual millinery. The reason why one adores Dior or any other couture, season after season, is not merely because it is the zenith in terms of luxury, but because it represents clothes in their true sartorial form-handmade, with specific women in mind, by old fashioned craft, rather than mass produced. With couture, it's all in the detail. All this is evident in Galiano’s work. The intricate beadwork cascading down the front of a heavy taffeta dress, hand-tooled tulle with softly frayed edges at every seam, nothing is without careful consideration. The evening wear showcases twisted taffeta, handembroidered with Swarovski crystals and feathers in cupcake pinks, soft periwinkles and mint greens. In this collection, Galliano played on the traditional silhouettes of the big time ball gown, adding a boucle with ostrich detail at the bust, and an asymmetrical gathered slit. Each one of his gowns is more breathtaking than the next.

BOOKISH ART Book sculpture is a new art statement and artists in this genre have excelled, either in turning books into spectacular fine art pieces or infusing them with pop-up art

J

USTIN ROWE The term ‘pop-up book’ is often applied to any threedimensional or movable book. It is synonymous with children’s books, but has great appeal for the inner child in most of us. British sculptor Justin Rowe creates magical sculptures and images from hand-cut books, with the help of just a touch of gum arabic and 24 carat gold or palladium leaf. Some of Rowe’s creations are very much in the realm of fairy stories, where his skill brings the book’s own illustrations to life. His images are half pop-up book, half sculpture, so it comes as no surprise that he’s currently in talks with Hodder/Hachette children’s books to develop a pop-up version of his Twelve Days of Christmas series, which were previously Cambridge University Press’s Christmas 2011 window display. Rowe’s works include Royal Little Red Riding Hood, Still No Soul Appeared Upon Her Decks, Forest of Dreams, Eleven Pipers Piping, Partridge in a Pear Tree, amongst others. NICHOLAS JONES If you thought books are only meant for reading, think again.

58

Melbourne-based artist Nicholas Jones, 38, takes you to an altogether different world of books, where they may not be read, but are appreciated for their transformation into eyecatching, fantastical objects. By his painstaking acts of tearing, dissecting and sewing, Jones sculpts books into an array of spectacular works of art. Potent enough to bring alive even the dullest of surroundings, Jones’ unique creations can be mounted on walls, occupy centre space on a table, or a shelf, for attaining that perfect visual flourish. So, if you want to bring a makeover to your pale, yellowcoloured old books, and transform them into figures resembling waves in an ocean, a whale, rolling hills, forking paths in a garden, or just mould them according to your creative imagination, Jones is your man. Besides the artful creasing and the delicate pleating of papers, Jones’ choice of books used for his novel creations makes his ingenious one-off pieces of work more powerful and demanding. For his every project, Jones strictly confines himself to old books, particularly those gathering dust, or sequestered away in dusty libraries. And, to get the“perfect”set of books, Jones doesn’t even hesitate to lay INSPIRATIONAL DESIGN IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY

/BOOK his hands on bins at different libraries and varsities. By and large, the books used by Jones for his unique creations are picked from the bins of the University of Melbourne library. “My artwork is intimate sculptural work made entirely from second-hand books,” emphasises Jones. “I address each book individually and attempt to create unique sculptural objects which highlight the poetic nature of the book as form. The viewer is confronted with a book, which has been cut, torn, folded or had some sort of operation performed on it,’ elaborates Jones. After going through Jones’ pieces of fine art, instead of considering the book as a vehicle for narrative or ideas, you will be confronted by the abstract quality of the book’s shape, whose original text remains almost irrelevant to the final sculptural form, except as a fragmented pattern that peers out from beneath the finished folds or cuts. Jones renews the physical form of the book, divesting it of its original intent, and allowing the viewer to “read” it in an entirely different way. This new-age sculptor spends hours giving interesting shapes to books and wishes to have a vast collection of books at his disposal for his dream project—creation of a 12th century church or an 18th century French palace by arranging the pages in a unique manner. Born in 1974 in England, Jones completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of Arts in 1997, and later, enrolled himself for Master of Fine Arts at the RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) University. Jones completed his MFA in 2001. On the verge of finishing his BFA, Jones started experimenting with a number of non-traditional sculptural materials for giving shape to his imagination and ideas. And, it was during that period that he

60

listened to his inner self and decided to use books for his abstract creations. Why only books?“I came to the realisation that artists made work with, or about things which they truly loved…I looked at myself and my life and decided that one thing which had influenced me, and that I surrounded myself with, was books, therefore, I began to start

folding and tearing books and looking for innovative ways to reuse discarded material,’’ reasons Jones. For Jones, who had extensively studied the work of Arte Povera (a modern art movement), artists like Jannis Jounellis, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Giuseppe Penone and Mario Merz proved quite inspirational...Their use of

“poor materials” was inspiring and confounding to me, coming from being trained in steel and bronze sculptural fabrication.” Before picking up any book to transmute it into an object of beauty, Jones always has to look for certain signifiers to make his work attractive. “It is difficult to pinpoint one book which is my favourite... but there are particular signifiers which I look for in a book. The quality of paper, binding, typography, colour and many other things.I made a work for my Masters, which was the combining of two copies of “The Story of San Michel”, by Axel Munthe. Both had the same cover, but were in two different languages: English and German. I folded these books together, and, in a way, created a cross cultural conversation which was back to front and upside down.” Jones, who has held a number of solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, has been featured in a number of publications, including, Crafts Unbound (Craftsman House) and The World of the Book (University of Melbourne Press), and also serves as a guest faculty at several institutions like, Monash University, RMIT Interior Design School and The Melbourne Athenaeum. “I work in the studio five or six days a week, usually from 10 am until late, depending on what needs to be done.”And, when not at the studio, Jones prefers exploring secondhand book shops to get the right pick for his creations. For all those aspiring artists waiting to create a niche for themselves, Jones suggests, “Keep going. Meet as many people as you can, but understand the multitiered nature of the art world and that hard work pays off. There can only be a few people who succeed quickly, for the rest of us it is all about persistence. Never give up.” — ASIT SRIVASTAVA

Fashion’s coolest

CLOTHESHORSE Superstar of the fashion world, Kate Moss rules because of her distinctive looks and style

T

ime magazine rated her as one of 100 Most Influential People in the World for having "the face that has never gone out of style." And, that after nearly two decades in the fashion industry, "Moss remains, hip, really hip, a first responder in the advance guard of style…Her kind of prolonged cool takes not just hard work and great bones but also an infallible chic-tracking system." Katherine Moss, or Kate Moss, has emerged as one of the most visible and highest paid supermodels. Born in Croydon, Surrey, England, on January16, 1974. Kate's affair with the fashion industry began in 1988, when she and her family were in JFK Airport on their way back from a vacation in the Bahamas. The then 14-yearold Kate caught the eye of Sarah Ducas of Storm Agency, a Londonbased modelling bureau. This chance encounter became the launching pad for Moss’ hugely successful career. Moss’ accidental discovery was prompted in no small measure by her distinctive appeal. No conventional beauty, her waiflike charm and chiselled face exudes an eye-rivetting appeal. Legendary fashion designer Calvin Clein, who catapulted Moss to fame, explained his choice of Moss as “someone who was natural,” but also, admittedly, “always thin.” Moss’ early success was largely due to the Calvin Klein ads of the

70

early '90s, where her exposure was phenomenal. She popularised the famous Twiggy look of the sixties and made skinny and frail the body image that women aspired to achieve. Though controversy often dogged her, Moss’ extreme popularity made it seem that being underweight was the standard of beauty. Her credentials are impressive, having worked with companies like Chanel, Narciso Rodriguez, Sephora.com, Cerruti 1881, Banana Republic, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry. Moss frequently grabbed

headlines, when she was engaged to Johnny Depp; and when she posed nude while being pregnant with daughter Lila Grace, in 2002. Her life-sized portrait called "Naked Portrait 2002," was painted by artist Lucian Freud, and fetched a whopping £3.9 million after a furious bidding battle. Moss’ rock-style fashion sense has earned her several awards, such as the Council of Fashion Designers of America for influence; and she made it to Vanity Fair’s international best-dressed list in 2006. The same year, she became the spokesmodel for Nikon’s Coolpix S6 camera. According to the 2011 Sunday Times’

Rich List, Kate Moss is believed to be worth £48 million. And, between May 2010 and May 2011, she has earned well over $13.5 million from a lucrative design deal with UK’s TopShop. Moss also added more than $5 million to her earnings over the last year, thanks to new deals with the likes of Dior, Vogue Eyewear and Cidade Jardim. Other endorsements include Rimmel, Burberry, Longchamp, David Yurman, Cerruti 1881, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, L'Oreal and YSL. Moss has also made her way onto the small and big screens. She appeared as herself in several episodes of the British comedy series French and Saunders in 1996, as well as in movies like Isaac Mizrahi's Unzipped (1995), Catwalk (1996), Beautopia (1998), and Original Copies (1999). In 1999, she appeared as Maid Marian/Queen Marian in Blackadder Back & Forth. For her wedding on July 2011, Moss (who married guitarist Jamie Hince) looked stunning in a vintage-style cream dress and matching floor-length veil, designed by close friend John Galliano. "I've lived in his dresses for years, and they just make me feel so comfortable. Manolo Blahnik designed a special pair of wedding shoes that included a blue insole as Kate's 'something blue'( in keeping with tradition, that dictates a bride should wear something old, borrowed, new and blue when they walk down the aisle). — LL BUREAU

KM STYLE QUOTIENT 1.Do denim edgily. For Moss, jeans are a major style statement, and often, making the biggest statement means choosing a style no one else is wearing. 2. Make it look effortless. Moss never looks like she's trying too hard which makes it all look effortless, cool and fun. 3. Go for quality. 4. Be a dress-code rebel. Moss disregards the dress code and yet somehow manages to make everyone else feel like they're the ones who got it wrong. 5. Keep prints timeless.Moss keeps her prints simple and classic. She rarely wears a designer's print of the season, or unusual or stylised modern patterns. This is the key to her timeless style. 6. Wear it tight to the torso. Moss regularly has clothes altered that do not fit her signature ribcage-hugging silhouette-a simple, yet effective device to make clothes always look as if they were made for her 7. Go for authenticity. 8. Focus on clothes. For Moss, getting dressed has never been about fashion. It has only ever been about clothes. 9. Mix and mismatch. 10. When in doubt, buy diamonds. From the 19th-century diamond drop earrings depicting flowers growing in a pot, to the simple set of diamond, sapphire and ruby bangles she was given by Donatella Versace, Moss knows that nothing brightens up a simple outfit like some serious bling.

This year's red carpet threw up a mixed bag of sartorial statements-there were some unexpected hits and some disappointing losers, but a few clear trends.

Hollywood’s glamorous power couple, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were, as always, the cynosure of all eyes. Jolie was mesmerising in a body-hugging white satin, strapless gown with a flash of red at the bust line by Atelier Versace, and was accessorised to perfection with a knockout scarlet pout; while Pitt was attired in a classic, bow-tie tuxedo by Salvatore Ferragamo. Together, they were the buzz of the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton, setting a high bar for style. Said stylist Mary Alice Stephenson, “There is mystery

your eyes off her.” Jolie was a first amongst stylish, seasoned veterans, who are mothers, moguls and perhaps, some of the best models around. Many stars seemed to shy away from colour, stepping out instead in pale, cool and snow-inspired hues for a series of white hot looks. Charlize Theron wore one of the

most dramatic dresses of the evening. The 36-year-old actress made an incredible entry in a plunging Dior couture gown, which boasted a thigh high split, a flowing train and an oversized bow detail wrapped around her waist, and set the tone for the plethora of stars stepping out in lightcoloured ensembles. Kate Beckinsale wore a strapless Roberto Cavalli gown with delicate sequin embellishment and chiffon pleat detail around her skirt. The strapless gown showed off her

figure to perfection and she accessorised the dress with a series of chunky metallic cuffs stacked up her arm. Kate Winslet stepped out in a black and white Jenny Packham gown; Stacy Keibler, George Clooney’s current date, matched the carpet in her dress. Heidi Klum was in a plunging-back, blushtone gown by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein. She accented her look with a huge turquoise necklace. Hal Rubenstein, fashion director for InStyle, noted the prevailing sophistication and elegance. "It's a very pretty night," he said. "Everybody wanted to look pretty and grown up. There wasn't a slashed skirt. There was an understanding that fashion isn't about being outrageous. "Among his favorites were Julianna Margulies in a purple caviarbeaded gown by Naeem Khan that showed off an open back.

Williams' biggest style statement, however, was her diamond garland headband by Fred Leighton for Forevermark. The blue gown that turned some heads was the Vera Wang worn by Sofia Vergara, Colombian actress, comedian, television hostess and model.
