SHORT AND SWEET The one pager on Berlin in winter in the January 2010 issue was crisp, evocative and gripping. I have been to the place several times during winter, and could easily relate to the description. Berlin is grey, cold and windy during winter. Daytime temperatures tend to hover just above, or below, freezing point and the snow turns to dirty slush within hours. –Anuradha Bagchi, Kolkata ○

ROAD’S THE WAY TO GO I read your road-trip story with interest (Who’s for the road? January 2010) perhaps because I love travelling by road. Me and my family have been on several long road journeys. Once we travelled from Mumbai to Bengaluru. It was truly a great experience. I definitely think that travelling by road in your own vehicle is the best way to see a place. You can stop at will, see unusual sights on the way and stop and chat with the local people if you wish to. Would it be possible for your magazine to feature a regular story on road journeys (India and abroad), along with maps, what to see, where to eat, etc? –Vishnu Tyagi, Mumbai

MANALI CALLING The Mall Road offers an informal cluster of shops, hotels, restaurants and travel agents. The main shopping areas are Thai Market, Hong Kong Market, Dragon Shopping Complex, Tibetan Market, Lama Underground, Shopping Complex, Shangrila Shopping Complex, New NAC Market and Snow Lion Underground Market. Musical instruments, prayer wheels, rosaries, amulets, masks and thangkas are a favourite with tourists. The Mall has a wide collection of beautifully-woven shawls at the Kullu-Kashmir Shawl Emporium–a cooperative run by local women for shawls– and the government-run Boutico Emporium. Wooded forests, snow-covered slopes, green, open valleys and the fast-flowing Beas make Manali an ideal destination for idyllic strolls. It’s also a favoured destination for mountain adventure sports and those who want to experience the snow. Adventure sports is Manali's forte. Its scenic location is ideal for outdoor activities, such as paragliding, trekking, skiing, mountaineering, rock climbing, angling, ice skating and jeep safaris. Some great excursions can be planned to Arjun Gufa (four kilometres), Club house (two kilometres), Hidimba Devi Temple (2.5 kilometres), Jagatsukh (six kilometres), Kothi (12 kilometres), Manu Temple (three kilometres), Mountaineering Institute (three kilometres), Nehru Kund (five kilometres), Rahala Waterfalls (16 kilometres), Rohtang Pass (51 kilometres), Solang Valley (13 kilometres), Tibetan monasteries and Vashisht hot water springs and temples (three kilometres).
HOW TO REACH Rail: The nearest railheads are at Chandigarh and Pathankot. Manali is around 284 kilometres from Chandigarh, and approximately 318 kilometres from Pathankot. BOND WITH BONN Immortalised by Beethoven–Germany’s greatest composer was born here–Boon lies on the river Rhine, some 20 kilometres south of Cologne in Germany. The city was the erstwhile capital of the Federal Republic of Germany and cherishes a history of more than 2,000 years. Today, Bonn is a cultural centre of Germany and the headquarters of several United Nations’ organizations. Besides the Beethoven House, tourists can also visit the Old Town Hall and the Poppelsdorf Palace. The Kaiserpassage Mall and the centre of Bad Godesberg are great places to shop. The brew-pubs and beer gardens, the wine taverns along the banks of the Rhine and the pavement cafés beneath the shady trees appeal to those who believe in enjoying life to the fullest. Bonn is within easy reach of Cologne Bonn, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt airports. It has direct rail links with many German and European cities, excellent motorways, passenger boat services and a well-knit system of local transport.

HURRAH FOR CHOCOLATE! It’s amazing how many benefits chocolate brings with it, whether you eat it or use it on the skin. When it’s eaten, it has large amounts of potassium, zinc, magnesium and iron. Magnesium is highly beneficial to muscles and is one vitamin that is regularly recommended by massage therapists to their clients. A deficiency in magnesium is thought to be one of the reasons why premenstrual women crave for chocolate. Chocolate shows low cholesterol levels and is thought to prevent memory loss. It is a mood-enhancer, reduces depression, reduces hunger and increases libido. The flavanoids in chocolate could stimulate insulin production and prevent ageing. Your skin loves chocolate–in Europe, chocolate massage is ministered using chocolate thinned with warm massage oil. A chocolate massage is sometimes combined with a chocolate body wrap and chocolate facial for a complete package. A chocolate massage induces relaxation, increases blood flow and stimulates the lymphatic and digestive systems.

PARO AIRPORT, BHUTAN A tightly-cropped valley surrounded by 16,500foot-high Himalayan peaks makes landing on this strip an arduous task. A tricky manoeuvre is needed as you race past the jagged mountains. Once you’ve gone past the peaks, your pilot has to glide through the treecovered valleys and control the aircraft as it hits vicious winds whipping round the mountains.

PRINCESS JULIANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ST. MAARTEN Wide-bodied jets like Boeing 747s and Airbus A340s that fly into this airport in the Eastern Caribbean descent dangerously close to the sunbathers on Maho Beach and skim just over the perimeter fence of the airport. The beach bums have to deal with the terrifying sound of jet engines. Although warning signs try to dissuade bathers from lying on the runway flight path, it is not feasible considering the width of the aircraft and the distance to the tarmac.
BARRA AIRPORT, SCOTLAND The airport on the tiny Outer Hebridean Island of Barra is the only one in the world that uses a wide, shallow bay as the runway. Flight timings are determined according to the tides. The beach is set out with three runways, marked by wooden poles at their ends. This allows the Twin Otters, which serve the airport, to almost always land into the wind.

JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, NEW YORK Pilots flying into this airport have to avoid interfering with flights into New York's two other close-by airports–LaGuardia and Newark. This compels them to have a 457-metre ceiling and an eightkilometre visibility before lining up with runway 13L and the waters of Jamaica Bay.
GIBRALTAR AIRPORT, GIBRALTAR Pinched in by the Mediterranean on its eastern flank and the Bay of Algeciras on its western side, the airport's truncated runway stretches just 1,828 metres (5,997 feet) and requires pinpoint precision on the part of the pilots.

MADEIRA AIRPORT, FUNCHAL, MADEIRA, PORTUGAL Sitting between mountains and the torrid Atlantic Ocean, pilots have to first aim their aircraft at the mountains, and then break a hard right to meet the runway. Besides the shift of direction, the warm winds coming off the ocean meet the cooler mountain dry air, which in-turn produces massive turbulence and mega storms. Although the runway has been extended, the new landing strip is held up by pillars.
JUANCHO E. YRAUSQUIN AIRPORT, SABA, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES The only airport on the Caribbean island of Saba, in the Netherlands Antilles, poses immense danger to the aircraft due to its physical position. It is located on a part of the island that is prone to gale winds, thus forcing the pilots to battle with the winds in order to achieve a landing. The runway is not even 400 metres (1,300 feet) long, and each end of the runway ends over a cliff. This creates the possibility that an airplane might overshoot the runway during landing, or take-off, and end up in the sea, or on the cliffs.
COURCHEVEL AIRPORT, FRANCE The tiny airport not only has 1,722 feet of runway and a gradient of 18.5 per cent to play with, there is also a vertical drop at the end of the tarmac. The airport has a dangerous approach, through deep valleys, which can only be tackled by especially-certified pilots. As it is in the French Alps, pilots also have to deal with heavy snow and freezing conditions. Courchevel Airport can easily be listed as one of the hardest landings on earth.

TODAY'S TRAVELLER | FEBRUARY 2010
BRACING FOR DANGER Other notable scariest runways are: • Toncontín International Airport, Tegucigalpa, Honduras: A rough mountainous terrain, one of the world’s shortest runways (7,096 feet), a dramatic 45-degree manoeuvring just prior to landing and a series of last-minute banks make the touchdown here an uphill task. • Reagan National Airport, Washington, DC: Winds from the Potomac River, important government buildings nearby and restricted airspace make it tough for pilots to land and take off. • Matekane Air Strip, Lesotho: The small, 1,312-feet runway is perched perilously on the edge of a 7,550-feet drop. The plane drops down the face of a 2,000-feet cliff as soon as it leaves the tarmac. Then it starts to fly. • Quito Airport, Ecuador: The tricky conditions and location make it a ‘high danger airport’. The pilots even have to content with a ‘hump’ in the middle of the runway, which gives the plane that extra, treacherous bounce. • Wellington International Airport, New Zealand: Landing a plane in windy Wellington is not a cakewalk by any means. The aircraft flies between the hills, with the ocean waiting on both sides of the runway. The battering winds can shake your aircraft beyond control. No wonder the airport has the slogan “Wild at Heart”. • Narsarsuaq Airport, Greenland: Once you’ve dodged the air pockets and the unpredictable wind shear, you need to handle towering icebergs on the flight path, which on a cloudy day appear as fluffy clouds on the horizon. FLYING PHOBIAS Many people suffer from aerophobia, or the fear of flying, and avoid getting onto an aircraft for various reasons. The most common reasons are: • Some avoid flying due to the fear of a mid-air crash 35,000 feet up in the air. But aircraft at that height are an optical illusion as each fly down the middle of a private highway in the sky, some 10 miles wide, with no other plane allowed in that space. • Thunderstorms should not be a cause for concern as all passenger aircraft avoid storm clouds by some 20 nautical miles. • There are back-up systems to take care of in an aircraft, in case of any failure whatsoever. • Turbulence in the air is also a factor for avoiding flying. Today’s commercial aircraft easily flies through 2G without any issues and are actually built to withstand 6G or 7G.

TIGER 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010
A lucky year awaits–plan and time your actions carefully to make the most of it. Your love life will be good, but singles should be cautious about unsuitable alliances in the first quarter. Professionally, you’ll be ambitious and resilient; don’t be too aggressive and your hard work will pay off. The year will start well financially, but guard against risk and extravagance in the last quarter.
DRAGON 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000
RABBIT 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999
You’ll explore spiritual or philosophical questions this year. If you communicate openly with your partner, you’ll enjoy a healthy love life. Singles can look forward to an important encounter at the end of the year. Initial frustrations in the office will be followed by a golden opportunity which you would do well to grab. Be extra vigilant against financial loss in the third quarter.

You’ll need to exercise patience this year, and your efforts will be rewarded. Couples will live through a difficult-buttemporary period at the beginning of the year. Don’t be too critical of your partner. You’ll derive great satisfaction from work, and rational and honest behaviour will bring you success. Beware of useless purchases and look out for financial opportunities in the last quarter.

1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002
Use this year to take stock of what you want in life and how to get it. If you can avoid flirtations, you’ll build on a solid relationship. Singles will enjoy a sociable year and possibly find love at the end of it. Your professional life will become much more dynamic. For a positive outcome, be assertive and realistic. The end of the year is a good time to make financial investments.
There’ll be real warmth in your relationships this year. However, you’ll need to navigate between routine and the temptation of an affair in the second quarter. Singles will have an erratic year, but lasting romance awaits. You’ll be more committed at work, turning challenges to your advantage, and may earn a promotion or pay rise. Avoid investments or rearranging your finances in the third quarter.
GOAT 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003
This year, you’ll develop personal interests, nurture friendships and experience fresh starts. Those with partners should resist a fling. Singles will have several chances to meet someone special. Consider workplace decisions carefully, as a seemingly good opportunity may bring problems, and wait until the second half of the year to take on new challenges. New job opportunities may arise at the end of the year.
MONKEY 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004
You’ll be full of charisma this year–decisiveness and action will bring various positive changes. You’ll be lucky in love, but restless. Be rational, and a relationship will blossom. Singles may find romance at the workplace, but should be wary if this happens in the third quarter. Business will go well if you match opportunities with initiative. You may find funds for a special project.

Competition, benefits from decisions and a full social calendar are in store. Your love life will improve tremendously. The first quarter favours pursuing professional training. There’s a chance of rapid career progress, earn more autonomy, by following the rules. A hobby or informal project may yield unexpected income. Resist impulsive spending and don’t make speculative investments in the third quarter.
You’ll want to assert independence this year– just don’t act too brashly! Work on your romantic relationship to foster trust and sensuality. Singles will be sociable, but should be wary of illusions in the third quarter. Work will go well if you control your lack of respect for authority. Some competition and changes in the third quarter will be to your advantage. The second quarter is an excellent time to make investments.
2010 brings luck–resist your sentimental instincts to make the most of it. You may have relationship problems, but you’ll resolve them. Despite intriguing encounters, singles should value stability in the second quarter. You’ll be motivated at work and develop good relationships. Overexcitement in the second quarter is a danger. Your finances will improve, but you must curb spending in the second quarter, and should not take any risks in the third.
