CARRERA Y CARRERA’S JAZMIN COLLECTION Madrid-based jewellery brand Carrera y Carrera has launched a new collection of jewellery named Jazmín, inspired by the jasmine blossom that is an important part of Andalusian culture. It confirms that floral jewellery is an important trend this season, with similar approaches having been taken by Piaget, Dior, Chanel and De Beers. The jasmine motif takes the form of intricate sculpted patterns enclosed within the two asymmetric circles that form the basic design. In some versions, mother-of-pearl creates an evocative contrast with gold and evokes the scented purity of the flower's colour. Rings, pendants and earrings form coordinating sets, particularly beautiful in the version with white gold and diamonds. Carrera y Carrera, founded in 1970, works with almost 60 jewellers in their Madrid factory, and its distribution network covers over 40 countries. Their jewellery is hallmarked by matte effects and a bright finish on their metals. here’s a nascent, but growing, yachting culture in the world today. You can tell from the number of spiffy-looking boats moored in harbours and water bodies, that not only is yachting a great water sports option, it is also a viable one. That yachting is a passion for many is reflected by the fact that over 75 per cent of yachts for sale are custom built to suit the preferences of yacht buyers. Choosing a luxury yacht is not arduous, with the many varieties and brands up for grabs. Amongst these, is Riva, an iconic product of The Ferretti Group, a
using premium-quality materials, is incorporated into the craftsmanship, and this, along with 170 years of experience, ranks Riva yachts amongst the finest, worldwide. The nautical icon will be celebrating its 170th anniversary in July, 2012. In an exclusive Q&A with Lifestyle Living, Alberto Perrone da Zara, Managing Director, Riva, and Mauro Micheli, Head Designer, spoke eloquently about their product. LL: What is the USP of your product? Riva: From the 1950s to the present day, Riva has been associated with timeless glamour
and la dolce vita. Riva owners have included many notable personalities and movie stars over the years. From the past to today, Riva has retained its core values of classic design, inimitable style, luxury craftsmanship and rich heritage. world leader in the construction of motor yachts, with an unparalleled portfolio of exclusive and prestigious brands. From legendary wooden classics like the Aquarama and Tritone to the more contemporary Aquariva and the most recently launched Riva Iseo, Riva yachts are synonymous with elegance, beauty and luxury. They go a long way back, to the historic Riva shipyard, founded in 1842. Located in Sarnico, on Lake Iseo in Northern Italy, the yachts produced here are works of art, in wood, chrome and glass. LL: How is it different in terms of luxury, privacy and experience when compared with other luxury yachts? Riva: The historic Riva shipyard, founded in 1842, is one of the oldest in the world. Located in Sarnico, on Lake Iseo in northern Italy, it is a place where yachts are produced as works of art, moving sculptures in wood, chrome and glass. Every production detail—the selection of the most prestigious woods (mahogany and rigatino), the care taken over ensuring the even flow of the wood’s veining and the way in which the perfectly matured wood is sawn—is painstakingly considered. This special attentiveness to craftsmanship, along with 170 years of experience, enables
Riva to produce the finest yachts on water. LL: How large are your yachts? Riva: The yachts range in size from the 115foot Athena to the latest addition to the Riva family, the 27-foot runabout, Riva Iseo. LL: What facilities do you offer on your yachts? Riva: The recent launch of the Iseo is an important advancement for the celebrated nautical brand, due to its size and design, offering an innovative option suitable for day cruising in waters with high environmental value, such as lakes. The yacht is the first Riva to offer the option of a hybrid engine version with a Zero Emission Mode (ZEM) cruising option, and is the first hybrid boat after the launch of Ferretti’s award-winning Mochi Craft 23 Long Range Hybrid in 2008. Moreover, it is the first boat of its kind to be equipped with both infotainment and GPS charts built for the Apple platform for iPad. LL: Tell us about your crew. Do they all speak English? Riva: Riva is an international brand with a multi-lingual team. The dealer and service network extends through Europe, America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania; Riva representatives also attend the major international boat shows that occur throughout the year. LL: What are your future plans, if any? Riva: We will be launching the new Riva 63foot Virtus this summer, the largest open yacht produced by Riva, as part of the 170th anniversary celebrations. In addition, the 170th anniversary will also be celebrated with the launch of a new website, the publication of a book chronicling the brand’s history, and an Aquarama parade from St Tropez to Monte Carlo, to acknowledge the iconic yacht’s 50th anniversary. Of course, there are further ongoing projects, but it is our desire that Riva lovers discover them when the time is right— we don’t want to reveal all our future surprises! — SIMRAN MISHRA

ant to design a car? You could, if you were cued into an automobile's basic function and its visual appeal. Some of the most famous car designers have mastered that tight-rope walk, churning out cars that grab eyeballs through their features as well as style. Famed Swedish car designer Sixten Sason began his career creating such household items as refrigerators, cameras and waffle irons, and went on to design what eventually became the Saab 92. And, Raymond Loewy got his start as a famed fashion illustrator for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Loewy was best known for his work as a car designer, particularly an iconic model of the 1950s, the Studebaker. Most recently, Victoria Beckham made waves as she designed and launched a special new limited edition ‘baby’ off-roader, the standard Range Rover Evoque. In between winning a prestigious award from the British Fashion Council, producing killer collections for her clothing line, and styling Harper, Beckham took time out to design Range Rover's new Evoque. Buyers will
have to shell out no less than £80,000 for the privilege of owning one of just 200 exclusive four-wheel drive vehicles created by the former Spice Girl, dubbed ‘Posh Spice’, who is married to international soccer star David Beckham. The special edition styling was created by Beckham in collaboration with Land Rover and the finished product was unveiled by her in Beijing, on the eve of the city’s Auto China
motor show, on 22 April, 2012. The car has attracted major luxury car firms from around the globe, from Rolls-Royce and Bentley to Ferrari and Lamborghini, to the world’s biggest and fastest growing car market. As the covers came off the new Range Rover Evoque which she styled, Beckham, stunningly clad in a close-fitting cream and brown dress with matching high-heeled, kneehigh boots from her own collection, proclaimed, “It’s a great honour... I want a car that reflects my personality. I’m really proud of this car.” Land Rover said the Beckham name is a significant ‘brand’ across the world and especially in booming new markets like China, India, Russia and Brazil, so they wanted to capitalise on her award-winning fashion and lifestyle prowess to capture new customers. Land Rover’s Design Director Gerry McGovern said, “Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example, at the first meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes

We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.” Accordingly, the off-roader is painted in a ‘stealth grey’ matt exterior paint which contrasts with the high-gloss piano-black exterior detailing. It has specially designed 20-inch gloss-black forged alloy wheels with discreet rose gold accents which make them appear to be spinning like four continuous, thin golden bands when the vehicle is in motion. The interiors showcase seats that are covered in soft, vintage tan leather, taking inspiration from a baseball glove and with baseball-style stitching, which is a subtle

reference to David Beckham’s sporty Californian lifestyle in the US. The dashboard features the exclusive rose gold-plated interior highlights, including on air-conditioning knobs. There is a bespoke four-piece Victoria Beckham leather luggage set, with her name on each of the zipper handles. It features new interior trim materials, including gloss black lacquers and veneers, textured aluminium and soft-feel black paint. A hand-sewn leather wallet for the owners’ manual is signed by Victoria Beckham. But, other than that, her name does not appear anywhere else. The Evoque off-roader is built at Jaguar Land Rover ’s Halewood factory on Merseyside, with the hand-crafted Beckham touches, hand-finished by the firm’s ‘Engineering to Order’ division. It is powered by a 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine linked to a 6-
speed automatic gearbox that propels it to a top speed of 135 mph and allows it to sprint from rest to 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds. It has an all-wheel drive and Terrain Response system which adapts to different road and off-road surfaces. At the launch in Beijing, Beckham said, “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I first started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars…I've stayed very true to myself. I've designed a car that I want to drive, a car that I think David wants to drive.” — INDIRA LAUL INSPIRATIONAL DESIGN IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY

outure is not only about what you wear anymore. It’s expanded to include hospitality as well. Fashion hotels are the newest buzz, with everyone, including Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfield checking into their own hotels. Fashion hotels span the globe, with Italy being the most popular country, which is hardly surprising, because of Milan, from where Italian designers kickstarted the idea of

getting their own hotels. Since 2000, more than a dozen designers have either partnered with a hospitality company to co-brand a new property or signed on to redesign the interiors of an existing hotel. When Hotel Missoni opened its doors in Edinburgh, Scotland, in early 2009, lovers of the Italian fashion house's signature zigzag prints had the good fortune to sleep on Missoni-initialed sheets, eat off
Missoni plates and even swig a cocktail at the Missoni bar. Says Lucian James, founder of Paris-based brand consultancy Agenda, “In the last five or ten years, fashion designers have begun to understand that the best way they can increase business is by recreating themselves as lifestyles brands. They have to find other ways to build revenue in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.” And,

Belgium-based Rezidor Hotel Group, one of the fastest growing hotel companies in the world, opened Hotel Missoni Kuwait, which has the fashion house’s signature elements of vibrant patterns and bold colour. The Rezidor group signed up with Missoni because of the brand’s established customer loyalty and the glamour associated with it. Fashion houses seem to be entering the hospitality business
quite rapidly. In 2005, Giorgio Armani extended his lifestyle brand into a chain of luxury hotels, resorts and condominiums, backed by Dubai-based property developers, Emaar. Armani Hotel, the first hotel in the chain, is housed in Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa. Fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld signed up with Dubaibased investment company Dubai Infinity, to design a hotel and 80 residential villas as a part of the futuristic Isla Moda in Dubai, dubbed
the "world's first fashion island." Fashion hotels fill an emerging niche—that of people who crave something more than conventional Ritz or Four Seasons (FS) hotels. Robert Barnard, a partner at the global consultancy firm, PKF, explains that the emergence of such "lifestyle" destinations is a result of increasing segmentation in the hospitality business. “Customers are interested in collecting
experiences,” he says. The latest trend among fashion titans is that they are branching out into the “experience” business, by lending their design style and brands to top-of-the-line hotels and resorts around the world. So, if you love wearing Bvlgari, Armani, Missoni, Versace, or Moschino, you can now wear it in surroundings created by the same designers. — INDIRA LAUL

Hotel le Bellechasse

Located near the Musée d’Orsay and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Hotel le Bellechasse is entirely designed by noted couturier, Christian Lacroix. The hotel presents stylish and arty accommodation veering on the flamboyant. The 34 hotel rooms are full of character and colour and are based on seven design themes that reflect the local area, including Saint-Germain, Tuileries, Quai d’Orsay and Jeu de Paume. Bizarre subjects and figures reflect both Bohemia and neo-classicism, such as the curious 19th-century gentlemen with butterfly wings, giant playing cards as well as Italian-style and astrological frescoes. Using primary colours, contrasting textures—mock fur, leather, alligator skin, hammered metal sheeting, ceramic tiles, etc, and highly inventive wallpapers with composite images of giant butterflies, winged dandies, Lacroix has transformed a workaday Left-Bank hotel with box-like rooms into something distinctive to stay in. Armani Hotel Dubai Milanese fashion designer Giorgio Armani couldn’t have chosen a more dramatic venue than Dubai’s opulent Burj Al Khalifa to tout his debut in the hotel business. In comparison to its surroundings, the Armani Hotel is sophisticated and amazingly discreet. Every detail in the hotel bears the Armani signature, right from the Eramosa stone floors to the zebra-wood panels, bespoke furnishings and personally designed hotel amenities. In a world of minimalist elegance, sophisticated colours, clean lines and unique textures blend together seamlessly with the tower’s stunning architecture and natural light to create an atmosphere of calm serenity. The lobby is cool and shadowy and dominated by a tubular arch construction. The colour scheme ranges from beige to tan to grey to charcoal. The public spaces and 160 guest rooms and suites are located mostly on the first eight floors of the tower, plus floors 38 and 39, with 144 Armani-designed shortstay apartments on floors 9 through 16. /RANGE ROVER Located on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic—near a choice residential community that’s home to such notables as Oscar de la Renta, eminent Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, and celebrated ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov—the exclusive, 15,000-acre Tortuga Bay resort is tucked away in an intimate zone of the Puntacana Resort & Club. The property, which is part of Puntacana Resort & Club, has itself gained a prestigious designation—it’s the only AAA Five Diamond Awarded hotel in the Dominican Republic. Designed by the renowned Oscar de la Renta and a member of Leading Hotels of the World, Tortuga Bay includes 13 luxurious beachfront villas offering unrivalled luxury, privacy, security and five-star service for guests who expect the ultimate in luxury and service. The designer’s good taste is on ample display in Tortuga Bay, which is now the chief attraction at Puntacana. Expains de la Renta, “We wanted a small jewel of a hotel. We wanted something that would be unbelievably comfortable, that people would come back to and would tell their friends about. We want to make Tortuga Bay the most exclusive place in the Caribbean.” The ‘small jewel’ is actually a collection of 15 villas strung along two miles of beach, with a gourmet restaurant, reception rooms and a gym. Most of the hotel’s facilities, including its restaurant, are within a two- or three-minute walk of one another. Each villa

is also provided with a golf cart for those who want to go farther afield, to the golf course, for instance, or to the several other restaurants in the Puntacana complex. The iconic designer’s style fundamental is simple. His design for Tortuga Bay reflects the area’s uncluttered—and unhurried— landscape. “I wanted to make it extremely simple,” he says, “and to add to the peace of the surroundings.” He does that by using subdued colours—whites and beiges and quiet yellows, greens and salmons. Nature is the star in de la Renta’s show. Therefore, he uses a muted palette so that nothing is in competition with the beauty of the outdoors. Moreover, everything is sustainable. de la Renta has designed furniture—even patio and beach lounge chairs—that can not only be manufactured in the Dominican Republic, but can also be made from local woods and fabrics. Beds are constructed of wicker, for example, and chairs of sea grass. “ The materials are very simple and fresh,” says de la Renta. The walls are embellished with pictures of tropical flowers and plants. At Tortuga Bay, nature is inside as well as out. Guests of Tortuga Bay have complete access to the first-class amenities available at Puntacana Resort & Club, including three miles of white sand beaches, 45-holes of championship golf, eight restaurants, a Six Senses Spa, and a 1,500-acre ecological reserve. In December 2011, de la Renta opened a new boutique in Tortuga Bay that carries a wide range of items, from clothing to accessories.

A cosmopolitan city renowned for its lush parks, liberal attitudes and strong belief in environmentalism, Copenhagen is a city where modern Scandinavian design blends comfortably with centuries-old churches and castles. Here are some of the many reasons why you should choose Copenhagen as your summer escape. While in Copenhagen, do as the Danes do, which is to enjoy the outdoors to the hilt. Hop on to a city bike, just like fifty per cent of the denizens do, and explore the city. Enjoy the sun and fresh air of this ‘bike city’ as you follow Copenhagen’s most famous road as it meanders through the city’s historic core. As
Europe’s longest pedestrianised shopping street, the Strøget will take you from the Radhus (city hall) to the charming picturepostcard harbour of Nyhavn. Once there, enjoy scenic Copenhagen at its best, with a drink or meal in one of the many vibrant bars and restaurants that line the water. Just 15 minutes by bike, away from the city centre, is AmagerStrandpark, a five-kilometre long public beach, where you can enjoy the clean water and the beautiful coastline of Sweden. You can also swim in the harbour, just a few minutes’ walk from the City Hall Square. Take a trip to the popular Freetown Christiania, a special area in the city, with around 100 inhabitants and marvel at the mixture of creatively built houses, workshops,
galleries, music venues, cheap eateries and beautiful nature. Enjoy a canal tour and admire Copenhagen’s exquisite buildings, including the Opera House, Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace, New Harbour, and, of course, The Little Mermaid. Copenhagen is a gastronomic delight, with Noma being voted the world’s best restaurant for three consecutive years; in 2012, the Michelin Guide awarded Copenhagen’s restaurants with no less than 14 Michelin stars; visit Torvehallerne, a not-to-be-missed food Mecca. Summer’s also a good time to enjoy the famous Copenhagen Jazz Festival, in the beginning of July, which has over 250.00 participants.

ark Twain’s somewhat cynical observation about clothes making the man has more or less put the stamp on gentlemen’s attire being a statement about status and social position. While cultural icons and economic conditions have influenced changes in men's formal wear, the purpose of dress has remained the same—to strike a sophisticated and debonair look. The tuxedo is surely among the more foolproof dress uniforms ever devised. Yet, for some reason, few manage to get it right. The most recent sartorial blunders that were committed happened during the Academy Awards. Brad Pitt wore his trousers too long; Robert De Niro wore his routine four-in-hand tie knots and not the requisite bow tie. Others turned up in suits that seemed as if they were borrowed from Dad. According to fashion designer, Giorgio Armani, who has dressed the actor for years, Clooney wears his tux with an easy and understated elegance. Designer Tom Ford proclaims that men’s tailoring comes from uniforms, which look great, and the language of which varies very little. By definition, a classic tuxedo is simply a suit of black or midnight-blue wool with a lapel of satin or grosgrain, the collar preferably peaked to distinguish it from the notch style favoured for business wear. Traditionally, a tuxedo is worn with trousers banded at the outer seam with a single braid of silk or satin, a black silk bow tie that matches the lapel facing, black dress socks of silk or fine wool and black dress shoes. Vests, or else the cummerbund, that originated in the military dress uniform of British India, are traditional accessories to formal wear, although these elements have been disregarded of late. Fashion designers often flout tradition, as Ford does while tailoring suits for Colin Firth and Brad Pitt. Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer, Burberry, rates clean details, defined lines and strict shoulders as hallmarks of a good tux. Michael Hainey, Deputy Editor, GQ magazine, feels that fit is where most men go wrong when buying evening clothes or suits. Hainey says that the formal wear departments of most high-end stores have skilled tailors who are still a man’s best friend. Admittedly, looking great in evening clothes is a matter of getting the basics right—a simple black suit with a grosgrain notch collar, a point collar white shirt, a tie, neither too fat nor too thin, and a well-buffed pair of black calf shoes. Check out these top tuxedo designers to see how they excel in their craft.

new record has been set in the art world. Norwegian artist Edvard Munch’s disturbing painting, “The Scream,” one of the most visible paintings ever, went under the hammer at Sotheby's for a whopping $120 million. It was the highest price ever paid for a work of art at any auction, overriding Pablo Picasso's “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” which was bought for $106.5 million at a Christie's auction in 2010. Seen as a pulsating anguish of modernity, the painting depicts the image of a man holding his head and his mouth wide open. This version of the painting includes a note from his diary, where Munch described his inspiration for the image thus: "I was walking along a path with two friends—the sun was setting—suddenly, the sky turned blood red—I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence—there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city. My friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety—and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature." Cut to a nineteenth century-hamlet near Oslo, which is Munch’s birth place. The artist’s morbid occupation with death stems from his childhood experiences with death and sickness—both his mother and sister died of tuberculosis. This, along with his father's fanatic beliefs led Munch to view his life as dominated by the "twin black angels of insanity and disease." Munch studied engineering, but gave it up to pursue art. He joined the school of painters who sought to depict their subjects as realistically as possible, and his paintings at this time created subjective content through artistic realism. For instance, his “Sick Child,” which is a tribute to his dead sister, uses the medium of colour to convey depression. However, Munch then turned to a more mainstream style as seen in his work, “Spring,” which earned him state support to study in France. After studying briefly at a Parisian art school, Munch began to be influenced by the French post-Impressionists. At this time, his father’s death caused some amount of trauma, which was mirrored in “Night in St. Cloud.” Munch aptly described

his style as, "I paint not what I see, but what I saw," identifying his paintings as, “Symbolism: nature viewed through a temperament.” Both statements reflect the transformation of nature as experienced by the artist. Towards the latter part of the nineteenth century, Munch was invited to exhibit his paintings in Berlin, by the Berlin Artists’ Association, but his paintings went unappreciated in the German capital and the exhibition was closed. The artist then arranged other exhibitions to sell his paintings. Munch’s art prospered and he stayed on in Germany, working on a series of paintings later entitled, “Frieze of Life,” which dwelt on the themes of love, anxiety and death. In his later years, it seemed as if Munch’s ghosts had come to haunt him. Suffering a nervous breakdown, he finally returned to Norway to lead a secluded life. His paintings now took on the motifs of the Norwegian
landscape and the people of the soil. The paintings during the World War 1 years also depicted his earlier themes of love and death. Simultaneously, symbolic paintings with stylised studies of landscapes and nudes made an appearance. During his last years, Munch was plagued by partial blindness and he never completed the illustrations of Ibsen’s plays that he had begun. His time was spent editing the diaries he had penned in his youth. Death came to this beleaguered artist in Ekely, outside Oslo, in January 1944. In terms of intense colour, semi-abstraction and esoteric subject matter, Munch’s work came closest to that of Paul Gaugin’s. Munch was one of the most controversial and renowned artists among a new generation of European Expressionist and Symbolist painters. He came into his own during the first decade of the 20th century, when the Art Nouveau

movement was at its peak. While his art definitely imbibed some of the motifs of this form, it mirrored his own subjective vision of a disturbed, tormented soul. Munch had a deep effect on subsequent painters in Europe and the United States, even as his particular style dated quickly after the First World War. Pioneering German Expressionist painters such as Kirchner, Kandinsky, Beckmann, and others concerned with expressing individual psychology through intense colour and semiabstraction, found considerable inspiration in Munch's melancholy yet strident canvases. On his death, it was learnt that Munch had bequeathed his remaining work to the city of Oslo. Numbering about 1,100 paintings, 4,500 drawings, and 18,000 prints, the collection was provided its own museum in 1963, where it serves as a testament to Munch's lasting legacy. — LL BUREAU

t’s the age for kooky fashion and jewellery. At the London Fashion Week runway show earlier during the year, Israeli designer Inbar Spector, known for her avant garde creations, sent her models down the ramp in exotic, colourful face masks by Lara Jensen. The glittering, Gothic masquerade featured billowy, romantic tulle bottoms and intricate, ruffled tops, which were made all the more dramatic by the sparkly facial accessories. This couture-esque jewellery gas mask is possibly the shape of things to come as far as global fashions go, proving more than ever that fashion is constantly reinventing itself. Artistic geniuses enter the fray time and again and make sure that fashion will always create an utterly new and unsurpassed experience for its audience and clientele. Meet one such genius, Joji Kojima, a Japan-based jewellery designer, who shows how over-the-top macabre glamour can be aesthetic. Born in California, Kojima started learning to make accessories at the tender age of 15, then majored in graphic design,
photography and typography at Tama Art University, Tokyo. At college, Kojima honed his talents while assisting the couture brand, Yoshiko Creation Paris. The label made fashion news when Lady Gaga made a guest appearance on Music Japan wearing Yoshiko's black umbrella headpiece entitled "B612" (from the Le Petite Prince collection). Later, when Kojima introduced his custom brand, Hotel Gluttony, Lady Gaga helped catapult it into a fashion sensation when she wore his chain mail mask on the cover of her Fame Monster album. Kojima's latest A/W 2010-2011 collection turns death into design with a suspended skull ring (based on the designer's own head) that gracefully dangles several inches above the finger. Standout pieces also include a skull mask with a working hinged jaw piece, and a fashionable accessory to violence—a diamondstudded knuckle duster. The rings in Kojima's Fall 2012 collection, Utopia, are reincarnated as various animals— that is, elephant, flamingo, horse, lizard—that are more like pieces of wearable art. Having are

/RANGE ROVER more like pieces of wearable art. Having established his brand in July 2010 (earlier, known as Rupert Kojima of Hotel Gluttony), Kojima is a newcomer, but already with a hugely established fan base. Though it’s somewhat difficult to classify Kojima’s work as art or jewellery—his work can be worn and it is certainly not a costume—it is still not entirely practical. But, whatever the genre, whether it’s to do with the slightly loose chains rattling or the skull ring bobbing menacingly up and down on its stem-like stand, Kojima’s jewellery has an impact far beyond its static form. In a recent interview with Fashion Installation, the online platform for fashion and the arts, Kojima speaks, amongst several other things, about his latest collection, entitled Utopia, which was shown recently during the Tokyo Fashion Week. Asked why his collection, based on a selection of precious, sculptural rings in animal shapes, all made by leather, crystals, gold, metal and feathers in a wide variety of colours, is based only on rings, Kojima explains that whenever he works on a collection, the theme is something he takes interest in. “This time,” says Kojima, I had an opportunity to see Japanese and Thai dancing, which made me focus on the delicate movement of the fingers. Also, I had always been interested in beautiful forms of animals. Then, I thought it best to put the two together as a ring on a finger.” Kojima views confinement as being more creative than complete freedom; he respects and admires Lady Gaga, and it excites him tremendously to think of designing for people with vivid personalities, such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Björk, and Marilyn Manson. Though the Japanese are a tad reticent towards avant garde, Kojima says Parisian and New York audiences have embraced his style. The problem with Tokyo, explains Kojima, is that Japanese audiences find it difficult to identify his work with traditional genres. As to future plans, Kojima opines that though his work is mostly in the realm of jewellery, he is flexible enough to expressing his art in other ways. “Actually,” says Kojima, “I work as a producer and art director, too. I am currently interested in perfume, alcoholic beverages and hotels. What is most important in creating a work is neither knowledge nor skills, but aesthetic sense at the core.” — LL BUREAU

TURKISH DELIGHT
JJ Valaya’s inspiration for the WIFW Fall Winter 2012 collection stems from the incredible design and sublime royalty of Turkey’s Ottoman Empire

ndia’s royal era may have been the stuff that dreams are made of, with shades of luxury, opulence, grandeur and extravaganza. However, it is not a thing of the past. Many have taken inspiration from that time and made it a part of their philosophy today. Take the case of designer JJ Valaya, who has epitomised Ottoman royalty in his Fall/Winter Collection 2012, creating awe-inspiring designs from his Turkish inspiration. He is,

perhaps, one of the few Indian designers who knows what a 'royal' garment means, and who strives to recreate it to the hilt. The year 2012 is also special for JJ Valaya as it marks the completion of two decades in the world of Indian luxury for the brand. Several celebrations are lined up through the year, but this, the very first one, is indeed special as it put together an all new line of ready-to-wear and showcased it as the Grand Finale for the WIFW Fall Winter 2012.
The Turkish Empire was recreated on the ramp. The famous grand bazaar of Istanbul with sights of Turkish harmony played a perfect backdrop as the veteran designer presented his collection. Actress Kangna Ranaut walked as the showstopper at the grand finale of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. Among the human montages stood a magnificent structure reflecting the architecture of the multi-cultural city of Istanbul. The show, which opened with a musical act by international

artist Volga Tunca playing the darbuka (goblet drum), was divided into four sections, with some scintillating performances showcasing different crafts of the Ottoman empire. Said Valaya,“ The show was divided into four different parts of the Ottoman empire. So, from wood, leather, fabric and then to ceramics, there were various crafts inspiring the collection which you saw on the ramp. The fabric that Kangna is wearing is a special fabric hand-woven in Turkey.” The show was titled Azrak, which, in Turkish, means ‘rare and uncommon,’ a befitting title for this collection, as it stands inspired by some exceptional and unrivalled arts from the Ottoman Empire. Primarily based on art forms on ceramic, fabric, paper, leather and wood, the collection takes one on a journey of a rich and perhaps forgotten era, though in a modern and crisp manner. JJ Valaya, as often before, reignites his love for the past and goes back to a host of Topkapi archives to put together a collection which sets itself apart by interestingly combining history with key elements of a classic urban wardrobe. “Celebratory, modern, nostalgic,” are his own words for a collection that sidesteps the predictable in favour of a mildly quirky yet vastly acceptable range of
contemporary separates. Starting with a monochromatic palate in ivory and black, the collection gradually worked its way into colour, while incorporating unusual art and craft-based forms such as mother-of-pearl inlay, Turkish miniatures, Iznik ceramics, dramatic weaves of the Sultan’s robes, exotic birds and graphic calligraphy. Jackets in quilted modern numbers with traditional detailing were paired with breeches and custom print leggings. Denim also made an appearance, though not in its usual avatar, but more as details in harmony, with lush velvets and gossamer silks. Specially created prints ruled supreme, with accents of the famed Valaya embroideries and fine details, which truly position this collection as ‘The Couture of Pret’. Though the prints blended well with the season’s take on ethnic chic, the patterns projected a gracious mix of history with the contemporary. The collection included a range of jackets, tunics, dresses, skirts, lehengas as well as saris, and the iconic designer chose to showcase 12 showstoppers, including Kangna, who have long been the designer’s friends. Among the showstoppers, some of the well-known names were Rohit Bal, Suneet Varma, Sikh dancer
Navtej Johar, Jamie Stewart, Nafisa Ali’s son, Ajit Sodhi, and Navin Ansal. “The idea was to get real people and show clothes on people who have a sense of character,” said Valaya. Kangna sported a long, white dress along with a long embroidered jacket, accompanied by heavy jewellery. Valaya said that the actress’ unique sense of style enabled her to carry off the outfit with élan and that the dress “was reminiscent of the era we were very inspired by.” The choreography of the grand finale was complemented by Gaurav Raina of Midival Punditz. The show saw some amazing performances by belly dancer Ekaterina, along with Ziya, who brought the house down with her non-stop spins. A similar theme of the Turkish Ottoman empire was adopted by designer Tarun Tahiliani in his off-site fashion show during this edition of WIFW. Commented Valaya about his collection, “After two decades, I’m not trying to run a race to fit in with what’s going on. I am simply doing what I really have always wanted to do…luxuriously nurture our brand whilst pampering my loyalists with (in)credible design and sublime quality to back it with…this collection honors that belief perfectly.”

/JAKARTA /J J VALAYA FASHION AND FOOD FESTIVAL
The Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival is an exciting insight into Indonesia’s fashion fare and culinary delights
Jakarta was upbeat with a food, fashion and cultural extravaganza, complete with Betawi puppets, dragon dancers and fireworks, plus a bonanza food and fashion fest, at the ninth edition of the Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival (JFF), which took place at the Summarecon, Kelapa Gading Center, North Jakarta, from 12 to 27 May, 2012. Soegianto Nagaria, the event’s Chairman, said that the festival was “initiated to raise our national dignity by presenting Indonesian creative culture in fashion and food to the world.” The festival kickstarted with a night carnival featuring more than 600 dancers, fashion models and performers. The parade commenced with a street parade which featured ondel-ondel (large Betawi puppets) performers, models dressed in hand-woven textiles and an 80-metre decorated dragon steered by dancers from West Kalimantan. The evening culminated with thousands of firecrackers lighting up the Jakarta skies. The Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival (JFF) organised a series of fashion shows, including some by top-tier Indonesian designers featuring both haute couture and ready-to-wear collections. Two of the nation’s biggest fashion organisations, the Indonesian Fashion Designers Association (APPMI) and the Indonesian Fashion Designers Council (IPMI), presented a series of thematic shows.
A show was organised by Cita Tenun Indonesia, an association of traditional textile lovers, who presented hand-woven fabrics from Lombok, Bali and Sambas in West Kalimantan. Ten senior designers also held solo shows featuring their latest pret-a-porter collections, one of them being Musa Widyatmodjo, who highlighted bright and colourful hand-woven textiles from the province of East Nusa Tenggara. For those who were not so clued into fashion, there was an extensive gastronomical spread in La Piazza, an al fresco dining area inside the mall, which offered a large variety of Indonesia’s culinary delights. In a historical throwback, the dining space was transformed to resemble old Batavia, as Jakarta was known during the colonial era. Semi-permanent structures resembled Museum Fatahillah and Beos train station, old colonial buildings in Central Jakarta. Visitors were treated to some mouth-watering Batavian snacks, such as Klappertaart (coconut pudding), Bitterballen (savoury meat-based snack) and Poffertjes (Dutch pancakes), during the festival. The feast also included traditional dishes from all over Indonesia, including Empal Gentong (beef in creamy coconut soup) from Cirebon, West Java; Nasi Gudeg from Yogyakarta; and Kue Putu Bambu (traditional cake) from Medan.

The Life Ball, celebrated at Vienna’s Gothic city hall, is marking its 20th anniversary this year under the motto, ‘Fight the Flames of Ignorance’. The live entertainment, fine food and fashion show is organised by the non-profit Aids Life group, who made a profit of 2 million Euros in 2011 to help fund AIDS treatment, research and prevention efforts. A charter jet arrived from New York carrying celebrities for the event, including actor Antonio Banderas, singers Randy Crawford, Cheyenne Jackson, Quincy Brown, Brigitte Nielsen, and others. Seats at the gala event cost 2,500 Euros each, and proceeds from the concert went to the Clinton Health Access Initiative. Former US President Bill Clinton was in Vienna to thank the crowd for its support. PRISCILLA CHAN WEDDING DRESS While Mark Zuckerberg was making Facebook public, his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan was quietly putting the final touches on her wedding gown. In a surprise relationship status update, Zuckerberg and Chan were married on May19, 2012, in a small, unannounced ceremony at their home in Palo Alto, California. The bride looked stunning in Los Angeles-based designer Claire Pettibone’s “Sky Between the Branches”gown, an ivory laser-cut floral dress with matte sequins lined in silk. The gown featured subtle cutouts in the overlay, plus an illusion jewel neckline, sheer back and chapel-length train. Chan's dress retails for $4,700. Guests thought they were merely coming over for a surprise party to celebrate Chan’s graduation from medical school at the University of California. However, the couple, who met at Harvard more than nine years ago, had been planning the low-key wedding for more than four months. A company spokeswoman said Zuckerberg designed the wedding ring for Priscilla Chan himself, and it featured "a very simple ruby." Zuckerberg made it official and public by, of course, changing his status on Facebook from "In a Relationship" to "Married."

The cover ensemble, a printed silk dress by Burberry Prorsum, is at once studious and soft, but also sensuous, with a deep décolletage. “Chitrangada represents a delicious dichotomy,” explains Vogue India editor, Priya Tanna.“She struck us all with her earthy sensuality when she first appeared on the screen…and then, she surprised us again by blazing across Bollywood in an avatar of high-octane glamour.
