MAGNETIC FLOATING BED This is one bed you’re not likely to find in your local mattress store. Dutch designer Janjaap Ruijssenaars created this cool magnetic bed using the power of permanent opposing industrial-strength magnets to enable it to float. This full-scale bed has enough magnets to keep 900 kilograms afloat in the air, while a smaller one-fifth scale platform can safely hold 80 kilogams. To make sure that the bed doesn't float away with a gust of wind or some outlandish movements, it's fastened firmly to the walls by four cables. The magnetic floating bed is up for grabs at a price of 1.2 million euros ($1.53 million. Any takers? FLOAT BY OKOOKO Launched at Furniture Fashion in May 2011, Float was voted by the public as the Best piece of bedroom furniture' in the New Zealand competition. Okooko, manufacturers and marketers of Your Bodyfit Sleep Systems throughout New Zealand, annually choose one designer to create a concept that challenges how we sleep. The brief challenges the designer to create a design that is both functional and fit for purpose. David Trubridge’s Float Bed was the design choice for 2011. Trubridge, whose designs grace Tokyo, Chicago, New York, Hanover, London, draws from the idea that the bed can be moved and used wherever required. The concept forms a cocooning space that gives a feeling of security and serves the purpose of sheltering sleep from the elements, creating a private sleep space within another space. Float is handcrafted from a water-resistant timber that requires little maintenance in its natural state. Acrylic fabric finished in Teflon encloses the base and canopy of Float. This fabric is a superior colour-fast fabric from Meridian, Italy, and designed for outdoor use. The open-cell foam core mattress structure is suitable for exterior use and promotes fast moisture transportation and evaporation. The operating mechanism is in stainless steel.

CUTTINGEDGE CRYSTALS Swarovski, the world-renowned maker of crystal jewellery, figurines and other products, has spanned three centuries, bringing joy to people worldwide

22

I

t says something for a brand when it is continually associated with excellence for over a century. That’s how it is with Swarovski. Forever identified with the highest ingenuity, beauty and technology, Swarovski has mastered precision-cutting and is reputed to be the world’s leading producer of cut crystal, authentic gemstones as well as created stones. Established in Wattens, Austria, towards the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has been a family business since its inception. Notwithstanding the premier quality of its products, Swarovski is known to innovate and produce inspired creative trends in such varied fields as jewellery, fashion, accessories, lighting and interior design, culture and industrial research and development. And, running through this rich tapestry is superb artistic expression, which the company has managed to weave, using central Europe’s cultural heritage and linking it with the arts, science and economics. By 1892, Swarovski produced a workable prototype machine and decided to patent his invention. So effective was this machine in cutting and creating precision and multi-faceted crystal glass, that he proceeded to set up his own company with

some other financiers, Weis and Kosman. Swarovski and his new partners, Armand Kosman and Franz Weis, set up the new company in Wattens, in the Austrian Alps, not far from Innsbruck. At the beginning of the 20th century, Swarovski’s sons ushered in streamlined production, creating the finest crystal products from then to now. Soon, Swarovski’s crystal jewellery became highly reputed; and when Swarovski experimented with the idea of inserting crystals within the fabric, couture designers like Schaparelli and Chanel responded favourably. Innovative technology in the form of a trace metal coating by grandson Manfred Swarovski led to a line of jewellery called the Aurora Borealis, because of its dream-like sparkle of rainbow colours. Animal figurines of crystal were created in 1976 and became popular souvenirs at Olympic Games at Innsbruck. A year later, the somewhat natural looking and sparkling Cubic Zirconia was created. It was synthetic, cheap and revolutionised the world of fashion and jewellery. In the 1980s, vividly coloured jewellery, fashion handbags and accessories were added to their growing portfolio. Its vantage point on a sweeping open plain, with a large waterhole in front, which is visible from any of the five luxury Villas and Main Facility deck, means the presence of abundant wildlife, at any point of time, within metres of the decks. Adds Steyn,"Photographic opportunities are endless and unique, as the proximity of wildlife to the viewing deck is very favourable for close-up shots and videos without the use of large-lensed cameras." One of the finest conservation areas in Africa, the sanctuary is host to the ‘Big 5’ and other fascinating creatures. Concludes Steyn,“The sheer unadulterated wilderness of the reserve is breathtaking as is the lodge, which ensures a very personal and exclusive safari experience.”

W

hether it’s to do with couture or nail painting, the French seem to be in fastforward mode. Nail painting became fashionable in France after it was introduced by French makeup artist Michelle Ménard in the 1920s. It became trendy in the US with the introduction of automobile paint. Women sometimes tinted their nails with red oil or added gloss with tinted creams or powders. Around 1927, the beauty market was hit by two alternatives for nail paint—a rose coloured cream and a tube of white, chalky liquid to be applied under the nail tip. By the 1930s, a team of brothers invented a range of nail colours and founded the Revlon Company. A few years later, Max Factor created several dark colours to cover the nail. Fashionistas realised that accessorising the nail could be just as crucial as that killer scarf or the one-of-a-kind necklace. And, the key to nail beauty is clearly, nail polish, whether it’s matte or shiny or embellished with bling. Most women will tell you that there’s nothing more gratifying than wellmanicured hands with freshlylacquered nails. Here’s what you should expect from your nail polish. For starters, colour choice is of the utmost importance. Your nail colour should be in vogue for the season and fitting for the special event you might be heading out to. The colour in the bottle has to be exactly how it will look on your nails, plus it must dry super fast

32

and be chip-resistant. Take a look at some of these gems, which have stood the test of time. WET N WILD ROCK SOLID NAIL LACQUER Users gush about this polish, calling it a "hidden gem," because it dries "super fast," "looks great" and "the colour in the bottle is very true to the colour on your nails." Others have loved "the bottle with the crystal on top;" while another says it has "pretty colours, pretty packaging…and is a pretty good deal."

red colour, especially because "it’s rich and passionate." Some like it because the colours are pretty and there is no testing on animals. Another likes it because there is no yellowing.

MAYBELLINE NEW YORK EXPRESS FINISH 50 SECOND NAIL COLOR It’s exactly as it says on the bottle— the Maybelline Express Finish 50 second nail colour is a quick-dry nail colour that takes 50 seconds from wet to set. It has an anti-chip formula as well, and comes in vivid colours. Moreover, its unique Control-Flow brush dispenses only the required amount of nail colour for a smooth and even application. Users have also commented on its "good pigmentation” and "great colour selection."

LIPPMANN COLLECTION NAIL LACQUER Deborah Lippmann's luxury line of award-winning hand and foot care was created as a result of her workingwith some of the most iconic figures in fashion—from Cher to Sarah Jessica Parker, Zac Posen to Rodarte. Users agree that Lippman's nail lacquers are "polishes to pine for." One of their best attributes is the formula in the lacquer which allows it to be applied thinly, and the bottle/ brush design, which prevents the application process from getting messy. The bottle keeps for a long time without getting thick or “gloopy." Also, it doesn't have formaldehyde in it, which is great for the environment. Plus, its antifungal qualities allow you to share it at the nail salon. The high-quality nail polish is housed in a beautiful regency-style bottle, so you can quite proudly display them on your dresser.

REVLON NAIL ENAMEL Revlon Nail Enamel gives up to ten days of lasting colour and shine when worn with Revlon Base and Top Coat. It delivers gorgeously smooth, chip-resistant colour to nails. People who swear by Revlon products also love the nail polish because, "Revlon polish is rich, the colour is vibrant and I really like how sheer they are." Many love the

ESSIE NAIL POLISH Many customers say that they like the thinness and the evenness of Essie nail polish. It spreads evenly over the nails, giving you a nice and easy job. However, you have to get the application instructions and procedure right if you are to have a great time with this cool nail polish. It does not matter whether you spend your day in

water or in the office, but one thing that you will love about the Essie nail polish is its endurance. This nail polish can stay on your fingers forever without showing cracks or chippings. The packaging is superb. You will love the shape of the bottles and the applicator as well. The polish is user-friendly. Made with high-quality formulas and ingredients, it is supposed to bring out the innate goodness of your fingernails to the core. There is also amazing variety in the colours, with something for everyone. CHINA GLAZE NAIL LACQUER WITH HARDENERS With this nail polish, you only need one coat to cover your nails, because the colours are opaque. The brush is top-quality, for easy application. Your nails will dry fast, the polish is not so thick, and it does not chip for a few days. There are also many colours to choose from. Most users love the coveted ‘For Audrey,’ which was actually a throwback colour that was released by China Glaze back in 2007, but still sells like hotcakes till this date! This creamy turquoise is the closest polish to Tiffany blue you’ll find. — LL BUREAU

T

he haute couture world is a creative fantasy land, one in which innovation is k e y , and this season, the level of workmanship from the ateliers did not disappoint. This spring, couture’s strongest message had to do with freshness and youth. A younger and young-minded couture clientele is on the rise, and designers are stepping up to woo them in disparate and daring ways. For Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, experimentation was the operative word, especially when it came to staging his shows. Lagerfeld invited guests onboard a makeshift jetliner inside the Grand Palais, and with moving images of clouds outside the plane’s windows, he presented countless shades of blue in an edgy but elegant display. The demure, sky-blue wool crepe ’60sinspired dress that opened the show soon gave way to a barrage

of eclectic looks in a variety of lengths, with flowing, sheer long skirts and several wild, wind-blown updos giving the feeling of flight. While Armani went green with his Armani Privé offering, Givenchy’s 10-piece static presentation included opulent nose rings, beaded jackets covered in collages of studs and crocodile scales. Amy Winehouse was the perfect muse for Jean Paul Gaultier, whose entire collection was inspired by Winehouse’s spirit. From classically tailored pieces to tough chic pieces, like colourful python corsets and a black leather motorcycle cape, to a glitzy purple sequin tux jacket and a turquoise-sequined pencil skirt, the show was a mad mix of sensibilities that somehow all jelled. The Paris Spring Couture Collection 2012 threw up countless chic contributions, of which here are some showstoppers. — LL BUREAU

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

Gaultier’s collection was a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. The beehive, the eye makeup, the beauty spot, the clothes with their tarty fifties flavour,—all these were present on Gaultier's couture catwalk. Gaultier managed to turn his couture presentation into both a celebratory send-off for Winehouse and a colourful addition to his gallery. The polo shirt was sexed up and changed into a back-buttoning dress with a ‘G ‘where the Fred Perry logo would be. Amy's tiny waist and penchant for pencil skirts shaped the silhouette, with a lot of help from London's corsetry wizard, Mr Pearl. There was also a dishabille edge, with necklines draping asymmetrically, jackets slipping off shoulders, and accented bosoms. However, the couture spirit of JPG managed to assert itself with pieces like the pinstripe suit jacket that fell away into a shawl on one side, or a languidly decadent satin peignoir over jet-beaded pants, or a corset-backed gray silk parka that flipped open to reveal a lining of pink sequins. At the finale, the models paraded in veils, while four men performed the ‘doo-wop’ versions of Winehouse's songs throughout. March 2012 | www.lifestyleliving.in

CHRISTIAN DIOR

Dior's Spring 2012 Couture collection went beyond one’s imagination. The runway was dominated by elegant girls wearing pleated skirts, sheer tops, wrapped jackets, long evening dresses in ivory, purple, black and grey colours, sporting floral patterns. Bill Gaytten did Dior proud with his collection. Sheer layers exposed the underlying construction of garments. The black floral designs that were picked out on a flaring white skirt were superb. On one dress, black crocodile scales were randomly picked out in patent. On another, ostrich had been dissected into paillettes of skin, like a body map. On yet another, sequins traced a grid, like a patternmaker's directives. The mood carried all the way through to evening wear, where a oneshouldered black gown featured tone-ontone embroidery and a random splatter of sequins. The same effect could be seen fulsomely with a galleon of a dress in Dior grey, with exaggerated billows of tulle.

ALEXIS MABILLE

Quoting from Marcel Proust—"It is only women who do not know how to dress that are afraid of colours"— Alexis Mabille spoke about "the science of colour" and energy as therapy, as his show promoted a fearless approach to colour blocking. Each outfit was monochrome, from brightest red to palest blue, and each model's face was painted the same shade as the enormous tissue flower mounted on her head. But, the real inspiration for the show was more to do with aesthetics than with science. Mabille was apparently inspired by a photograph of iconic model Lisa Fonssagrives on a beach, her face suffused with pink from the sunlight coming through her umbrella. Thus, the models’ faces were coloured in shades equivalent to the garments worn by them. Each look had a bold and uniform color palette, from blazing pink to icy blue. However, the really interesting part of this collection was the over-sized crepe hats that were replicas of flowers and in every imaginable colour. The hats also drew attention to the accentuated waists and full skirts. Aside from the rainbow of colours that Mabille chose for the gowns, he used one metallic dress to complete the collection that was neither silver nor gold but a little of both.

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI

This designer’s show was pure fairytale. There's an almost magical lightness to the way Giambattista Valli cuts and drapes; lightness was the key, and his finale of vast puffs of chiffon ball gowns looked eminently comfortable. Gorgeous items unveiled in intimate, gold-leaf interiors to an admiring crowd, amongst who were Salma Hayek and Diane Kruger. Held in a salon at the Hôtel de Crillon, in Paris, the collection comprised pristine ball gowns and cocktail dresses.Raspberry, cream and salmon pink lace, floods of crystals and clusters of beaded flowers on sheer tops, reawakened every young girl’s dream of being a princess. The delicate, youthful mood was reinforced by draped tops, some folded into giant knots; polka dot muslin dresses and a pleated A-line skirt with a touch of Alice in Wonderland. As for the floral accessories—the belts, necklaces and headpieces were all jewellery pieces cut out of pure sheets of silver, courtesy Luigi Scialanga, and effortlessly worn over clothes. This surrealist sprinkle, à la Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, only enriched the fairytale, timeless aspect of the collection. “This is going back to the basics of couture, of atelier practice,” Giambattista Valli reported backstage after the show, “and it’s giving work to dying professions.

KARL LAGERFIELD FOR CHANEL

One hundred fifty shades of blue—the vision presented by the Chanel show was streamlined, upbeat, and forward-looking, and in complete contrast with the decadent Raj-drowned-world, and scorched-earth scenarios that Lagerfeld arranged around his most recent collections."No '50s, no '60s, no '70s—just what I like," Karl Lagerfeld said of his Spring 2012 Couture Collection for Chanel. Presented in an Air Chanel jumbo jet—built in the Grand Palais specifically for the occasion and complete with Chanel logo carpet, skylights, and airplane seats— the collection was a "monochrome rainbow" of blues, blacks, and creams, in straightforward silhouettes that moved easily from day to night. Suits, dresses and jackets were structured and clean, with dropped waists, puffed sleeves, low pockets, and wide, stand-away necklines. For the evening, there were tiered gowns and organza trapeze cocktail dresses glimmering with crystals, beads, sequins, and highshine PVC. The Chanel show is generally the pièce de résistance of the Paris Fashion Week schedule, as much for the star-studded front row as for Karl Lagerfeld's runway spectaculars. The catwalk abounded in ladylike tweeds and fringing, along with a palette of delicate water colours. Some of the celebs who added their star power to Chanel's S/S 2012 presentation were Alexa Chung, Uma Thurman, Clémence Poésy and Poppy Delevingne.

LADY MILLION PACO RABANNE Vibrant and sensual, Lady Million is like a voluptuous nectar of flowers. Powerfully seductive, the sparkle of bitter orange and a hint of raspberry reveals the fragrance's first breath, followed by smooth and bright notes, and a burst of nerolis. Then, heady orange blossom slips out of its sheath. Its narcotic sweetness then reveals itself, bewitching and demanding all attention. Joining with sambac jasmine and underlined by gardenia, the blend soars into something more carnal, yet ever subtle. Now, a dominant note of patchouli enters the fray, pacifying notes of honey with an addictive and supremely tempting sweetness. Amber end notes become allenveloping, floating around like a ray of light on a diamond.

LANCOME TRESOR For its 20 years, Lancome revisits the legendary Tresor perfume for a very limited edition-a series of 20 numbered bottles. An amber flask, a neck adorned with black, deep crystals... Lancome Tresor becomes the black diamond for the privileged few. To mark the 20th birthday of Trésor, Lancôme launched an exclusive, limited edition named Trésor Diamant Noir. The most precious stone of them all, the black diamond, was the inspiration for this anniversary bottle, which looks like a faceted and polished black diamond which hides the amber-coloured liquid inside. The bottle neck is decorated with a ring of crystal and ebony black hematite. The box is pitch black and engraved. The fragrance inside remains the same.

FAN DI FENDI Fan di Fendi is a sensationally energising perfume of fruity nature and gorgeous aroma. The fragrance comprises delicious extracts of pear, tangerine, Calabria mandarin, black currant, Indian tuberose, Damascus rose, yellow jasmine, associated with other rose tones and patchouli. DIOR HYPNOTIC POISON EAU SENSUELLE Dior presents its new composition, Hypnotic Poison Eau Sensuelle, which gives a whole new meaning to aroma. Velvety-soft petals of vanilla orchid surrounded with fruity aromas revive the scent of vanilla and add a lively frame, which is not complete without Damascus rose. Ylang-ylang extract, while orange blossom absolute adds a full and gorgeous sensual note. To create an impression of tasty fruit notes, this composition uses tuberose and vanilla, while green leaves and stem carry the scent of freshness. A base of Hypnotic Poison Eau Sensuelle incorporates a creamy trace of sandalwood and musk, which are in perfect harmony. Sweet and gentle vanilla takes one back to beautiful childhood memories, but it is also a true volcano of passion which triggers a storm of feelings. The new flacon presents a completely new approach to Dior's poisons, with a transparent ruby-red glass, which symbolises a light and sophisticated beauty who enchants with her powers.

S

ometimes called the “Lady Gaga of design” and sometimes the next Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders is really quite his own person. With longish, swept-back greying hair, bespoke tailoring, and signature necklaces, Wanders is a veritable walking advertisement for his own company, Wanders Inc. He is arguably among the world’s best and most holistic designers. Design, in his lexicon, extends beyond making products to the total experience of his brand, something he does his best to control to the last detail. Today, he is at the centre of a multiarmed empire that includes deals with Puma, the upscale-furniture company B&B Italia, and a new partnership with Yoo, the new $10-billion international realestate-development firm built by John Hitchcox and Philippe Starck, for which Wanders will design residential properties. Wanders’ design capabilities are mind-boggling. Picture this— A steel chair getting transformed into a throne straight out of a fairy tale, with a woollen, felt-like textile, legs hanging loose as if floating above the ground; utensils carrying chiselled features of beautiful women; egg-shaped vases deriving their sensuous ovoid bulges from hard-boiled eggs stuffed in condoms; a handheld lamp modelled on the classic, age-old candles, which “switches” on or off with a blow; porcelain washbasins resembling a soap bar—Wanders’ list of creations seems to be just endless. From furniture, jewellery, tableware to the architectural projects of Kameha Grand Hotel in Bonn, the Mondrian South Beach Hotel in Miami, and private residences in Amsterdam, Mallorca and Jakarta, Wanders handles virtually everything with February 2012 | www.lifestyleliving.in

his exuberant creativity. By breathing life into the lifeless, Wanders, indeed brings fantasy to the real world, with his unusual designs, which defy the conventional idea of beauty. “I think design needs to be warmed up a bit and connected to real people. I want to see more from the heart, less from the brain,’’ says the 48-year-old Wanders, who drums up vision for some of the world’s finest designing firms like Boffi, Cappellini, Drrog Design, Flos, Mandarina Duck and Maglis. Internationally renowned for deftly fusing technology and artistry, with his love for the bizarre, Wanders, born in 1963, Boxtel (the Netherlands), describes the making of his works as: “I’m here to create an environment of love, live with passion, and make my most exciting dreams come true.”Almost in every one of his creations, Wanders projects the perfect blend of technology, art with a tinge of bizarreness. Be it the Egg Vase, made by a collection of three playful porcelain vases, latex condoms, and hard-boiled eggs; the Sponge Vase, crafted without using plaster moulds, by taking a natural sponge, and burning it in a ceramic oven for giving it the coarse look and feel; Antelope II, the extravagant, multicoloured, tiled car, or the Knotted Chair, which catapulted Wanders to star status-Wanders’ forte lies in his effortless ability to experiment and transform the bizarre into the real. Wanders, who graduated from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988, drew international recognition for the first time in 1996, with his Knotted Chair, which was made out of ropes, soaked in glue. Knotted Chair was designed by Wanders for the Dutch design group Droog Design. The chair, which resembled a fishing net, took the entire design world by storm with its gravity-defying work,

13

motorcycle

/TRIUMPH combining high-tech materials with the homely charms of macramé. For the delicate, yet sturdy, and durable chair, cords composed of Aramid fibres (heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibres) were twisted around a carbon core, and knotted together before being draped over a mould. The resulting soft net was then soaked in an adhesive and later dried for hardening in order to set the chair’s shape. Two years later, after his first international project, Wanders formed his own Amsterdam-based company, Wanders Holdings. Ever since its inception, the company has grown by leaps and bounds. Presently, the company has transformed into an umbrella group encompassing four divisions: Wanders’ partnership in a Dutch hotel company (Lute Suites); real estate ventures in Amsterdam; higher-end Marcel Wanders studio, and mass-market home-and-office design company `Moooi’. Yes, the design company with an extra `O’. Why? Wanders explains, “The name comes from the Dutch word for beautiful, but with an extra `O’ for extra beautiful.” He says the main objective behind co-founding Moooi in 2001 was to provide a platform for aspiring designers, who, in spite of having brilliant ideas, were

14

not able to make their presence felt in the design world. Elaborating more on the mission behind setting up Moooi, Wanders says, “I started the firm as a place to experiment the constraints imposed upon designers by the logistics of the manufacturing industry. But, it is a business company, too. Moooi aims at exploring precisely the zone between individuality and mass production.’ At Moooi, Wanders generates an annual revenue of around $ 30 million, working in close co-ordination with aspiring artists and big names, including, Jurgen Bey, Joep Van Liehot, Ross Lovegroove, Jasper Morrison, and Bertjan Pot. Having prominently featured in several newspapers and magazines of international repute, Wanders has won a number of awards, including the Elle Decoration International Design Awards Designer (2006) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s modern design collaborative award. Moreover, several of his designs have also been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions in the world, like the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Central Museum in Utrecht. — LL BUREAU

REBEL WITH A CAUSE A remarkable designer, Robert Majkut has successfully translated his unconventional ideas into functional, aesthetic design

O

ne of Europe’s most prolific designers, Robert Majkut has earned a credible reputation as a designer extraordinaire, on account of his consistency in design and his ability to think out of the box. It’s no wonder that he is popular, not only in his native Poland, but in countries outside Europe as well. Born in Szczecin, Poland, in 1971, Majkut graduated with honours in furniture design as well as architecture. Since 1988, he has shown proficiency in the realm of art as graphic artist,

48

painter and creator of installations. A radical from the start, Majkut dons many hats, but he is a designer at heart, always looking towards changing the landscape around him—always for the better. Majkut’s style is a conscious blend of formal design and the latest technologies, into which he infuses natural, cultural, humanistic and economic aspects. He is sensitive to forms, which are humanoid, oblong, round, and close to nature, and these are present like a leitmotif in his works. Majkut seeks inspiration for his work from the real world around him and transforms it to represent “a specified, meaningful, good purpose.” His mantra has for long been, “The future is tomorrow, invented today.” The iconic designer’s world has its own identity and a

Not only does Whaletone possess the natural sound of the classic grand piano, it also offers the complexity of programmed tones of vintage models from the 1960s and 1980s, different sound variations, and the possibility of creating new sounds. Apart from the snow-white and classic black, W h a l e t o n e’s

colour palette also includes intensive, lively colours for those who want it. Pink, orange, violet is available for the avant garde set, while blue, creamy or chocolategray hues are the more sober choices. As a thank you gesture to the muse that helped him to create Whaletone, Majkut and his team support a programme for the protection of the endangered whale species. One per cent from the total sale value will be dedicated to an organisation campaigning for whale protection. — INDIRA LAUL

WHALETONE The concept for the design was born in a dream, in which Majkut saw a grand piano that challenged the classic notion of the instrument. A professional musical instrument, W h a l e t o n e’s beautiful twocolour, black and

hen John Galliano, the son of a plumber, enrolled himself at the London-based Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in 1981, little did the college staff or the students know that the lightly-built, shy youth among them would be making an indelible impact on the fashion world. Galliano’s fashion prowess was first revealed with his graduation collection—`Les Incroyables’. Inspired by the French

Revolution, `Les Incroyables’ took the entire fashion world by storm and made nothing short of history—Joan Burstein, owner of Browns, loved Galliano’s graduation collection so much that she purchased it in its entirety and showcased it in the window of her prestigious London boutique. Born November 28, 1960, in Gibraltar, the iconic fashion designer made several such remarkable splashes after graduating, before he reached the pinnacle of the fashion world.

From releasing his own label in 1984 to winning the British Designer of the Year Award in 1987, 1994 and 1995, Galliano, with his perseverance and dedication, even achieved the unique distinction of being the first Englishman to head a French couture house—Givenchy—in 1995. Impressed by his exceptional skills to blend historical influence and contemporary trends in clothes, the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, which owned Givenchy, transferred Galliano to Christian Dior less than two years later. Galliano, whose couture was often influenced by different cultures, their textiles, markets and way of life, created some of the industry’s most popular collections, including the Blanche Dubois in October 2008 (inspired by the 1951 film, A Streetcar Named Desire), the Napoleon and Josephine collection in March 1992 (inspired by the love story of the two), and the Princess Lucretia collection in Oct 1993 (inspired by

the Russian princess). Popular for his daring reinvention of romantic themes and delicately, superbly tailored garments, Galliano is also known for his own dramatic final-bowcostumes, concluding shows with his fantastical get-ups, inspired by the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte and the US astronauts. It would not be wrong to say that Galliano was exposed to the nitty-gritty of style and fashion by his Spanish mother. At the age of six, Galliano and his family moved to South London from Gibraltar. Deeply influenced by the Spanish culture, Galliano’s mother made sure that her son wore elaborate outfits every time he stepped out of the house. A Flamenco teacher, she instilled in him a bold and

creative sensibility that made him stand out amongst his English schoolmates. He was often mocked by his school friends for his immaculate dress sense. Galliano’s Spanish heritage, plus the first six years of his life spent in Gibraltar, amidst Mediterranean colour and swirling, woven textiles, became an integral part of his life. As Galliano grew up, his sense of dress also underwent a progression, and he started looking for ways to vent his March 2012 | www.lifestyleliving.in

creative ideas. It was not until he reached design school and was around people more like himself that he came into his own. The iconic designer enrolled at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 1981, and also started working as a parttime dresser for Britain’s National Theatre, the eminent company in London. And, it was Galliano’s work with the theatre that, in a way, catapulted him to stardom. Galliano’s history-making graduation collection—`Les Incroyables’—was, in fact, from his part-time work at the Theatre Production. The collection executed novel ideas such as upside-down military jackets. The entire collection was snapped up by `the fairytale mother of fashion designers,’ Joan Burstein. Galliano has said that he still loves his first collection and that to this day, it still “haunts” him. Soon after the success of his debut collection, Galliano received financial backing for his own line in 1984, and started working for the collection, which was meant to be a static show at the London Fashion Week. Even as Galliano

continued to make waves in the fashion world, his success was not matched by major financial success. He lost his financial backers and did not have adequate money to arrange shows for his collections. It was then that the frustrated designer opted to quit London for Paris. However, the decision did not greatly help Galliano, who continued to struggle for money. In 1990, Galliano went bankrupt. However, with the support of American Vogue Editorin-chief, Anna Wintour, and Vogue’s Creative Director, Andre Leon, Galliano revived his fortunes, and soon returned to the fashion world with a bang. Wintour and Leon— the two high-powered connectors—introduced him to the Portuguese fashion patron Saõ Schlumberger, who loaned Galliano his house for a fashion show, and several top models worked for free. Soon, Galliano started receiving new financers, and paved his way for the coveted post of head designer of Givenchy in 1995. In less than two years’ time, Galliano moved to Christian Dior. — ASIT SRIVASTAVA INSPIRATIONAL DESIGN IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY

GOODBYE WHITNEY Singer Whitney Houston was laid to rest in a private burial service in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, New Jersey. She was buried next to her father, John Russell Houston, who died in 2003. The burial followed a nearly four-hour "home going" ceremony at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. Houston's mother Cissy Houston and her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, were joined by mourners at the invitation-only service. There were musical tributes from some of the biggest names in the industry, including Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. A distraught Mariah Carey, who attended Whitney's funeral, described the ceremony as "gorgeous." The Bodyguard co-star and close friend, Kevin Costner, delivered a touching speech at her funeral. During the emotional service, which included moving speeches from friends and loved ones, Stevie Wonder took to the piano at one point and shared memories of the late artist. The guest list included, amongst others, Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that President Obama was an admirer of Whitney’s “immense talent,” and that his thoughts and prayers were with her family, especially her daughter. OBAMA BELTS OUT BLUES The US President just couldn't say no: Mick Jagger held out a microphone almost by way of command, and soon, Barack Obama was belting out the blues with the best of them. The East Room of the White House was transformed into an intimate blues club for a concert featuring blues’ all-stars of the past, present and future —and the President himself. The surprise performance by Obama came at the end of the playlist when the blues ensemble was singing Sweet Home Chicago, the blues anthem of Obama's home town. "Come on, baby don't you want to go," the President sang out twice, handing the mike to BB King—American blues guitarist and singer-song writer—momentarily, and then taking it back to tack on Sweet Home Chicago at the end. That was how Obama ended the night. He began it by saying there are downsides to being the President. “You can't just go for a walk, for example.”And then, there are the times that more than make up for all those frustrations, he said, like when Jagger, King, Jeff Beck and other musical giants came by the house to sing the blues. KATE MIDDLETON TO GET WAXED FOUR TIMES OVER The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, will be immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds, not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times! Such is the popularity of the Duchess and her fashion, that the waxwork attraction has decided to make four faux Kates, three of which will be unveiled April 4. Madame Tussauds will sculpt Kate replicas in a stunning, sheer Jenny Packham dress; the iconic blue Issa engagement dress in London; the lilac Alexander McQueen frock from the BAFTA gala in Los Angeles and the black lace Temperley gown she wore to the premiere of War Horse. "It is

the first time that we have had a member of the royal family make their debut in multiple locations," a rep for Madame Tussauds told People. “All four designers have been involved in making the dresses and the Duke and Duchess have been kept informed at every stage of the creation process." Fun fact: The first royal family member to be immortalised in wax was William IV, who was monarch when Madame Tussauds first opened in London ... in 1835! PARIS HILTON CELEBRATES 31ST BIRTHDAY IN LAS VEGAS Hotel heiress Paris Hilton rang in her 31st birthday in style on Friday, and judging by the events of that night in Las Vegas, one could hazard a guess as to what she might have wished for as she blew out all her candles: a date with Lady Luck. Later that night, Hilton took time out from celebrating to announce on Twitter that she'd won $30,000 while playing blackjack. It seems that some girls have all the luck. And the money. AMITABH BACHCHAN ALL SET TO RECOVER The iconic star, who was operated upon recently, says he will convalesce at home. Amitabh Bachchan revealed that despite his improving condition, his full recovery could even take months. The Big B was admitted to the Seven Hills Hospital on February 11. He underwent two abdominal surgeries, following which he complained of acute pain. Doctors decided to keep him under observation and his condition seems to be improving now. His post-surgery pain has reduced and doctors, satisfied with his progress, have allowed him to take a shower and have better food. “Getting independent gradually…a careful shower, avoiding the cuts and needles and ‘kites’…pretty dexterous exercise,” wrote Bachchan, referring to the medical tubes as “kites”. Confined to the hospital bed for 10 days, the megastar is glad he is being allowed a little mobility. “Wonderful to see all your faculties coming back in use…those that lose them permanently, however do they manage,” he added. Big B’s health condition stems from his near-fatal accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982. On the big screen, the 69-year-old was last seen in Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan in 2011. But, he was active on the small screen, where he hosted the grand fifth season of the reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati. CELEBRITIES JOIN DANCERS AT RIO CARNIVAL The Carnival parade has been attracting top celebrities for much of its 80 years. Many are brought in by attention-hungry Brazilian advertisers hoping to share some of the glow of the world's biggest party. This year, beer company Brahma was promoting Jennifer Lopez, while hair-care company Head and Shoulders hosted American singer, Fergie. Neither planned to actually parade in the allnight-long event, but Lopez waved to the crowd from the VIP seats at the Sambadrome as 13 samba schools joined in a fierce, sweaty competition before a tens-of-thousands-strong audience. The numbers of top-tier celebrities in attendance has grown as Brazil's star has risen—particularly since the South American giant was chosen to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 summer Olympics. Recent guests at the two-day-long parade have included Madonna, Beyoncé, Jude Law, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Kevin Spacey.
