Do: Stroll along La Rambla, which is a mile-long road bustling with tourists, artists, human statues, fortune-tellers, musicians, dancers and cafes; do some high-street shopping in areas of Centro, Eixample and Diagonal; cruise miles of beachfront

boardwalk starting from Barceloneta; attend a flamenco dance show, which is a must-see on a Barcelona trip; and hike the Montjuik hill, which has a national gallery, the Olympic stadium and the Joan Miro Foundation. Relish: Barcelona truly showcases the great Catalan recipes. Some typical dishes include Butifarra Amb Mongetes (white beans with Catalan pork sausage), Escudella and Carn D’olla (hearty casseroles) and the famous Pa Amb Tomaquet (country bread with tomato and olive oil). Satiate your sweet tooth by trying out popular desserts, including Crema Catalana (similar to Crème Brulee). What to wear: Being a very cosmopolitan city, casual wear is acceptable in Barcelona. If you want to blend into the local culture, choose muted, autumnal colours. Also, don’t dress scantily while visiting a church.

SOLO WOMEN TRAVEL MYTHS DEBUNKED! In today’s time, solo women make up a large percentage of travellers. But, those planning to travel alone hear many false stories that can put off their plans. Here are some solo travel myths accompanied by the truth. Myth1: Travelling alone is dangerous. Truth: Unless you are travelling to a region which is announced as the most unsafe, travelling alone is an experience in itself. However, you do have to take care of certain things, like being confident, taking care of your belongings and not going to abandoned places, despite the destination you are travelling to. Myth2: I will be lonely. Truth: Instant companions can be found by joining a guided tour. Moreover, solo travellers are more likely to meet new people. So, enjoy the opportunity to experience new places, meeting like-minded people and interacting with locals. Myth3: I can’t plan a trip by myself. Truth: There are numerous Internet travel sites and forums from where you can take tips as well as learn from other travellers’ experiences. Myth4: I will have to face unwanted attention from men. Truth: If you are concerned with the attention, do some research about cultural differences—in some countries, it is perfectly acceptable for strangers to invite you for a drink. You never know, you might make a new friend.

INDIA POST ICONIC SERVICE PROVIDER

S India Post has come a long way from being just a postal service—it offers a host of financial and premium services and caters to a wide cross-section of consumers >> Indira Laul

ince the dawn of civilization, man has felt the need to rely on various forms of communication in order to confer with one of his own species. In India, the earliest references to transmission can be traced to the ancient scriptures of India—in the Atharva Veda, and later, in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which mention the transmission of messages. Today, communication has transcended the borders of messaging and entered realms that would have been unimaginable earlier. Postal services have pushed the borders of communication, proving that an efficient and reliable communication network is the backbone of a country and plays a pivotal role in its unification and socio-economic development. This is especially true for India,

february 2012 | www.todaystraveller.com

where, for nearly a century and a half, the postal system has been the mainstay of the communication infrastructure of the country. From the erstwhile bare-footed mail runners to the unconventional bullock mail carts and the innovative air mail of 1911, the road that has been traversed until the present-day e-post, has been a much lauded historic journey. EARLY HISTORY It was the traders of early India who felt the need for a regular message service, as the royal mail was deemed the prerogative of the rulers alone. In the 17th century, several postal systems under the patronage of various rulers and traders were in vogue, and the East India Company first used these services for exchange of mail between their trading centres in India. The Company decided to establish their own postal service—the

‘Company Dawk’—for trade requirements as well as for garnering intelligence. Accordingly, in 1688, the first post offices of the Company Post were set up at Bombay and Madras. In 1835, a Committee was set up for the unification of customs and postal system of all the presidencies. The result was the first Indian Post Office Act of 1837. It not only provided for uniform rates and routes, but for the uniform designs and other specifications of the postmarks for each category of post office. Under the provisions of the Post Office Act of 1854, the monopoly of carrying mail to all areas under the British empire in India were granted to the Indian Post office, and the office of the Director General of Post Offices of India was established. After its initiation more than a century ago, the most significant milestones were the birth of the Post Card in 1879; the Money Order in 1880; the first official Airmail in 1911; the Indian Postal Order in 1935; the use of the Pincode in 1972; the Speed Post in 1986; and E-Post service in 2004, followed by the Instant Money Order, Electronic Money Order, etc. Today, The Department of Posts, which functions under the brand name of ‘India Post,’ has evolved to play a major role in the growth of commerce and ensured a seamless flow of ideas and information. The iconic institution boasts a staggering 1, 55, 333 post offices, it handles 2.25 crore pieces of mail on a daily basis, while three dedicated freighter aircraft provide unhindered connectivity for the entire country; additionally, India Post has its own 1,000-strong fleet of dedicated vehicles for mail delivery. Or aliens from a sci-fi movie? Meet Wenlock and Mandeville, the strangely endearing mascots of London Olympics 2012. vastly different from the likes of some of their popular predecessors, like Waldi the dachshund from the 1972 Munich games and Misha the bear from the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The pair are based on a short story by children's author Michael Morpurgo, that tells how they were fashioned from droplets of the steel used to build the Olympic stadium. However, the duo need some amount of explanation in order to be

Mandeville's name is derived from Stoke Mandeville, in Buckinghamshire, home to Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In the 1940s, Dr Ludwig Guttmann came to the hospital to set up a spinal unit. Looking for ways to inspire the soldiers in his care, he established

the Stoke Mandeville Games, widely recognised as a forerunner to the modern Paralympics. Apparently, the characters have been created from the last drops of steel left over from the final support girder of the Olympic stadium in Stratford, East London. The duo have been given their own story, written by author Michael Morpurgo which has been turned into an animated film. The organisers feel that, if linked together, the mascots could provide a powerful story that people could respond to. Conceived by London design agency Iris, the story behind the mascots is also designed to help make the Olympics relevant to the whole nation. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said they were a 'solid coalition.' Finally, the acid test of appreciation came from some primary school children who were present at the launch. "They remind you of aliens, which is really weird and cool," said one 10-year-old. Said another, "It reminds you of the Olympics, which is worldwide, so it's something you'll want to remember forever."
