Block Island Ferry Wind Farm Tours Now through August 28, 2019

Old Harbor, Block Island, Rhode Island With about 45% of its area protected as conservation land, Block Island is a favorite place for those who live green. And now, even the blue sea surrounding us has turned green. Environmentally speaking, that is. Just 3.3 miles off the coast of the island is the Block Island Wind Farm, the country’s first offshore wind farm. You can view it in the distance from the lawn at the Southeast Lighthouse. But the best way to see it up close and hear its story told by a local guide and wind farm enthusiast is with a narrated cruise tour on Block Island Sound.

Wakefield Village Association 2019 RiverFire Wakefield, RI August 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd 5:00 -10:00 pm Stroll historic downtown Wakefield, listen to the sensational vibes of featured musicians, visit shops, restaurants and local artisans while sparkling bonfires are lit along the Saugatucket River. RiverFire will run every Thursday through Aug. 22, with volunteers lighting braziers along the river and a new band performing each week. There’s no cost to visitors, but non-perishable food donations will benefit the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale. Keep the flames burning and the pantry full! Learn more on the Wakefield Village Association Facebook page or wakefieldvillageassociation.com.

Compared to wind farms that dot other countries’ coastal regions, this one is considered on the small size, but it doesn’t look that way in person. Its five giant turbines span more than 600 feet above sea level, and use the power of offshore winds to create enough energy to provide power about 17,000 homes while keeping 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions out of the atmosphere. Impressive. The Block Island Wind Farm just spun to life, so this is your chance to be among the first wave of folks to view its awesome power. Group tours leave Old Harbor every Wednesday and Friday at 3:45 p.m. for a one-hour tour aboard Block Island Ferry’s newest high speed ferry, MV Islander. With two inside air conditioned cabins, ample outside viewing areas and an upper sun deck, you’ll find the perfect spot for a great view.

Children’s Fitness

Encouraging a healthy lifestyle by Kate Anderson Children’s fitness continues to be a major concern as the number of overweight children continues to climb. The obvious health risks associated with childhood obesity provokes fears that weigh heavily on the minds of both parents and loved ones. Unless significant changes in behavior and lifestyles are made the epidemic will only get worse.

The Importance of Fitness for Children

Encouraging a healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity

Some studies have shown that a child with even one obese parent has a 50 percent chance of being obese themselves.

and fitness is important to addressing issues associated with health problems and obesity. Physical activity and keeping weight off not only helps keep poor health conditions at bay, it also helps protect children from injuries that can occur when they are not accustomed to physical activity, movement and sports. Most injuries that plague children completing physical activities occur as a result of a lifestyle that lacks movement and activity that can provide balance, coordination and muscle memory necessary for a fit lifestyle.

Set an Example

One of the best ways parents and loved ones can encourage children to participate in fitness activities and embrace a healthy lifestyle is by adopting a similar lifestyle that promotes and values physical activity. Some studies have shown that a child with even one obese parent has a 50 percent chance of being obese themselves. A child with two obese parents have an 80 percent chance of following in their footsteps. Fitness should be a family affair that will have positive, long term implications for a healthy life. Aunt Carrie's

1240 Ocean Rd, Narragansett, Rhode Island Located in Narragansett Rhode Island Aunt Carrie’s is just a few short minutes from the local beaches and fishing spots, situated in the heart of Point Judith. For years, Aunt Carrie’s has been a place where locals, tourists, friends and families alike can relax and enjoy a taste of traditional Rhode Island seafood and homemade cooking while taking in the cool ocean breezes and wonderful views.

the more people who tasted them, the more she would have to make. Ulysses thought maybe they should try selling the clam cakes and chowder along with their lemonade.

Carrie Cooper and her husband Ulysses lived in Connecticut and enjoyed riding to Narragansett with their six children, cramped in a Model-T. They came to fish, swim, and camp-out on the beach. Ulysses talked about the fact that there was no place in Point Judith to get anything cold to drink.

A small stand was built down near where the Point Judith Lighthouse stands now. Ulysses bought the property where the restaurant is now located, and the restaurant was built in 1920. The counter area and front dining room is the original building, and over several years, the building grew. And how did Aunt Carrie’s get its name? Well, besides their six children, lots of nieces and nephews came along to the beach. Someone always seemed to be calling “Aunt Carrie!” It soon became known as Aunt Carrie’s.

Soon, the family started selling cold lemonade to the local fishermen and the nearby campers. Brought up on a farm, Carrie always made use of everything. The children would bring clams to her and she would make chowder. Her original corn fritter recipe soon became her clam cake recipe. Of course, the smell would travel to all the other campers and fishermen around. Every time she made some, someone would stop and ask her what she was making. And of course,

Over the years, many of Carrie’s relatives have worked there. The white haired lady most of you think of as Aunt Carrie was actually her daughter, Gertrude. Gertrude married William Foy, who worked at the restaurant while his family camped here in the summers. Gertrude and William took over the restaurant in 1953 when her father, Ulysses, died, and her mother retired. The kitchen was then expanded to its present size. In 1964, Aunt Carrie died. Take time to look around at some of the old pictures the next time to stop by. You may even find someone you know. If you are around very early in the morning, you will find our bakers busy peeling apples for pies and making homemade raisin bread! Content curtsy: Aunt Carrie’s.

Farmer’s Markets Are Making a Big Impact by Rachel Pelisson, RI

As American’s become more disenfranchised with processed and industrialized food, it seems like farmer’s markets are popping up all over Rhode Island. What’s all the buzz about? To start, heading to the farmer’s market can be a fun outing for couples, friends, or families. Many markets have live music, demonstrations, samples for tasting, and some have animals. It’s a great way to get out and support local small businesses. Most of us would rather put our $10 in the pocket of Farmer John from the next town over than the pocket of the CEO of Kraft Foods. Farmer’s markets help us connect with the local people that grow our food. They support our communities both socially and economically. They also support our community environmentally. Local food utilizes far less fossil fuel for harvesting and shipping and gets to your plate much more quickly. Consider the amount of time and fuel required to ship strawberries across the country from Mexico. Odds are your local farmer’s market strawberries were picked yesterday or this morning and took a quick drive from Little Compton to Providence. Our local small farmers don’t use genetically modified (GMO) seeds and are likely to use far

less pesticides than industrial farmers. That means your food is cleaner and more healthful. In addition to being ‘cleaner’, local produce is likely to have better nutritional value. As soon as a fruit or vegetable is picked from the plant, the nutritional value starts to decline. This doesn’t mean that older produce has no nutritional value, far from the truth. Fruits & vegetables in any form are the most nutritious foods on the planet, but fresh produce will have higher vitamin and antioxidant content. You can also find unique heirloom varieties of produce, like watermelon radishes or purple carrots.

Do you need to buy organic at the Farmer’s market?

The answer is no! The benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption far outweigh any potential risks from pesticides. If you have the option and the financial ability to buy organic, then do so by all means, but it is not necessary. Fruit and vegetable intake in any form (conventional or organic) is associated with a lower risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. A simple rinse under cool water is all you need to remove a good portion of pesticide residues. No special fruit & veggie wash is necessary, just plain old H20 will do the trick.

How do you find your local farmer’s market?

Your best bet is to check out FarmFreshRI.org. Not only can you find farmer’s markets and local produce stands, but you can also find out what produce is in season, ‘pick-your-own’ farms, community supported agriculture (CSAs), and farm-totable restaurants that purchase fresh, local products. You can even search for a specialty item you’re looking for, like duck eggs, local yogurt, or goat’s milk. FarmFreshRI.org is a great place to start to find the freshest food in Rhode Island.

What’s in season this August?

Leafy greens and herbs are available all summer and fall. There will be berries, peaches, nectarines, plums, and melons. The first apples will start to be available in late August. There will also be corn, cucumbers, carrots, eggplant, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and more. You’ll find some of the widest variety this time of year. If you haven’t checked out your local farmer’s market or produce stand yet, this is a great time to start. Along with a team of researchers at the University of Rhode Island and Brown University, Michael Godfrin developed a new technology for high-powered microscopes, which will enable faster development of drugs and other new and innovative nanomaterials. Armed with this technology, but with little experience in business, Michael was referred to the RISBDC, and began meeting with Josh Daly to develop a plan to secure funding and commercialize that technology. “Since 2016,” Mike recalled, “I’ve had many meetings and discussions with Josh, and his insight and experience has helped to translate our team’s vision into a business model and strategy.” Josh introduced Mike to lean start-up tools – like the Lean Canvas, customer development, and Disciplined Entrepreneurship – that set a foundation for Mike to engage potential customers and successfully start and scale the business.

Succession Challenges

by Bryan B Mason Lots of small businesses are family run businesses, many that have been around for a long time and are still run by the descendents of the founders. There can be a lot of challenges to integrate the youngest generation into the operation. There is the classic route of having that person start out at the lowest level and learn each aspect of the business, slowly working their way up. This way, each possible successor can be vetted, coached and groomed to take over when needed. Other times, some of the children want to go off on their own and don’t want, at least initially, to be part of the business. Another challenge can be the potential rivalry between siblings or other family members. All of these challenges need to be managed well. However, when none of the potential successors show interest or the necessary aptitude to be able to take over the

business, there can be a crisis. Then the main challenge is to determine whether to bring in a management team from outside or to sell the company. If you are lucky, someone already working for the company shows the potential you are looking for. In this case, you can work with the person to be sure they have the opportunities to grow their skills and learn the important aspects of the business. If this person continues to meet your expectations and is on a trajectory to lead the organization, I might recommend you incentive that person to stay by offering them stock, a partial ownership stake or at a minimum, a cash bonus sufficient to keep their attention. A second approach is to recruit someone from the outside into middle management with the skills, intelligence and attitude to become the next leader of the company. You can then evaluate them and nurture them as described above.

A lot of business owners have their hand in everything and believe that this hands-on approach is the key to the business’s success. Of course, this approach almost guarantees that the business will not be successful without the current owner. In both of these options, you have to face the challenge a number of years before you want to hand over the business. The great benefit of these approaches is that you can see if that person is going to work out and change course with enough time to identify and groom another candidate. Another key aspect of both grooming and retaining a potential successor and putting the company in a position to successfully operate without the owner is delegation of authority. A lot of business owners have their hand in everything and believe that this hands-on approach is the key to the business’s success. Of course, this approach almost guarantees that the business will not be successful without the current owner. It also does not send the right message or properly reward the hard work of your identified successor candidate which can lead them to become frustrated and take their skills to another company where they expect to be appreciated.

One of the most important aspects of selling a business for the most money or having a successful transition to new management is having a business that can prosper without the current owner. That means that authority has been properly delegated to the appropriate levels of management throughout the organization. It also means that processes have been written down, technology provides transparency to operations, business records are correct and very importantly, key business relationships with vendors and customers are captured in a customer relationship management system. These are critical to a successful transition.
