Run Around the Block September 7th, 2019
Old Center Road, Block Island, RI This may be the longest run around a block on record. That’s because the particular block in question is actually Block Island, a little piece of paradise just 7 miles long and 3 miles wide off the coast of Rhode Island. And you’ll see most of its beauty — rolling meadows, stone walls, sparkling ponds, towering cliffs —during the Run Around the Block, a 9.3 mile (15K) journey around this stunning island where more than 47% of the area is conservation land. The race starts at 11:45am on Saturday, September 7. For locals, September is their favorite time of year. The days are still long, the water is still warm, and the summer crowds have thinned out since Labor Day. Most island businesses will still be open, so you’ll find plenty of places to eat, drink, relax and shop before you make the trip back to the mainland. Run Around the Block has a fairly late starting time, so runners coming over that morning have plenty of time to catch a morning ferry and make it to the race on time. Free bus transportation will take you from ferry to race and back again. Registration costs $30 to $45 depending on when you register. Preregistration is available at www.active.com.

This is a special year for me, so I’d like to be the first torchbearer. This is my year of doing everything big Article by Carol Ann Donnelly
It is not uncommon for people who go through a lifethreatening illness to want to help others facing a similar situation. The desire to pay it forward seems like a necessary part of the healing process, and it is exactly what two women from two completely different backgrounds are doing to help others affected by cancer. The commonalities Monique Boyajian and Katy Bell share are the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation and they are both thriving. However, their stories are inimitable, as you will read. Katy Bell was 36 years old when she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in 2012. This young teacher spent the next 2-1/2 years going through cancer treatments and surgeries. She connected with the Foundation in the spring of 2014 and joined the Foundation’s Young Survivor group and became an active participant in other programs the Foundation offered. She also carried a torch in the annual Illuminations of Life Ceremony at the Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™ Weekend in October the following year, just a month after she said “I do” to her longtime boyfriend, in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by family and friends. She set a goal to raise $5,000 to carry the torch and she did it. The money Bell and the other 149 torchbearers raise is used for the operating expenses of the Hope Bus, a 38-foot long pink RV that travels throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts to bring education, support and programs to people who are unable to come to the Foundation’s Center. “I raise money for Gloria Gemma, because of all it’s done to make my life richer and more fulfilling,” Bell said. That fall and early winter couldn’t have gone better for Bell. She was healthy, she loved her job, and she was looking forward to spending the holidays with her husband and family. The New Year should have brought more of the same, but in January of 2016, she received the news that she had metastatic cancer.
Since then, Bell has challenged herself to increase her fundraising goals every year, and she has been the top fundraiser for the past four years. In addition to other perks, the top torch fundraiser also has the honor to carry the first torch and lead the procession to light the largest WaterFire of the season. “Being a torchbearer gives me purpose—something to focus on,” said Bell. This year, her goal is to raise $10,000 but she has some competition. Monique Boyajian has risen over $7,500 and she’s not done fundraising. For Boyajian, 2019 is a big year for milestones. This year marks 10 years that she has been cancer-free, and she is also celebrating her 40th wedding anniversary. In addition, she celebrated a milestone birthday, and this is the first year her family is coming in from all over the United States to help her celebrate at the Flames of Hope Weekend. “This is a special year for me, so I’d like to be the first torchbearer. This is my year of doing everything big,” said Boyajian. A friend told Boyajian about the Foundation after she had been diagnosed in 2009, and her initial meeting with the executive director lasted almost three hours. Boyajian has been actively involved with the Foundation ever since. She participates in the free programs offered by the Foundation, as well as volunteers and fundraises. Boyajian admits her favorite thing to do is give the pink ribbons out to all the torchbearers. “It’s such an honor to give each person the ribbon. I get to meet new people and see familiar faces,” Boyajian said. Although Katy Bell’s and Monique Boyajian’s stories are very different, they both state they are okay if they don’t win the top fundraising spot, because the money they raise is for a good cause. They both know firsthand how important the programs and support services offered by the Foundation are to people touched by cancer, and this is their way of lighting the way for others.

We have all been through the journey of purchasing Jewelry. As a husband and a father, I have had the joys of purchasing many jewelry items over the past 20 years or so. The experiences have been much different, to say the least. I tend to notice that when I shop at some of the larger chain retailers, the experience is more generic, and tends to be more about the person behind the counter making a fast sale, which I completely understand by the way, as I have worked in sales for many years myself. When I shop online, I tend to feel as though there is a 50/50 shot that the product is going to be exactly the one that I loved in the photo. Again, these methods may seem convenient, but they are not always the safest and most efficient way to shop either. Luckily, a few years back, I was introduced to a local, family owned and operated Jewelry store in Johnston, Rhode Island, called Ocean State Jewelry. One of my closest friends had recommended that I take a ride there, as I was at the time, looking for an anniversary gift for my wife. What caught my attention the most during my trip to the store was not just the good selection, and the high quality items that were available, but just as equally important was the one-on-one personal service. I feel as though that has become a lost art. Not enough customers appreciate the need for personalized service anymore. At Ocean State Jewelry, Veronica and Alicja pride themselves on the words Customized Service. They take the time to know you, and Veronica is even known by some as the Jewelry Therapist. Why, you might ask? Well, she takes the time to evaluate exactly what item will be a fit, an even better, she listens to your situation. With the help of Alicja, the dynamic duo is almost always able to pair a perfect match with the customers desires. In fact, Alicja’s skills are so well recognized in the industry, she is currently doing repairs and work for over 15 different jewelry stores nationwide. From appraisals, to custom watch repair, and even the special designs and sizings, the ladies at Ocean State Jewelry will cover your needs. So, how did this duo come to fruition? Well, just as many local businesses carry on, Veronica worked in Jewelry for her uncle for several years. He had formed the business in 1984. When it was time for her uncle to move away from the business, he wanted to make sure that the store that he had worked hard to create would be left in the best possible hands. Veronica’s business partner Alicja, who has over 30 years of experience in the industry, wanted to buy the business initially, but instead decided to ask Veronica to be her partner. Keeping with the family business atmosphere, personalized service was the most important thing that Veronica and Alicja needed to do. It doesn’t matter if the customer is going to spend $5 or $5,000, the same time and effort is given to each customer equally. So, as I said when I began this article, the thing that I loved most about my experience at Ocean State Jewelry was the ability to be myself, and actually feel appreciated for being in the store. Many times in my life, I tend to feel out of place when shopping for higher end items, and that was never the case in this experience. When I asked the ladies what their favorite thing about going to work is everyday, they both agreed making friends and close relationships with their customers. They want you to feel like family when you come to the store. Old Slater Mill 67 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, Rhode Island Recognized internationally as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, the museum celebrates innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit by engaging audiences in relevant cultural, historic, and artistic endeavors. In 1921, a group of visionary business leaders with ties to the textile industry convened to form the Old Slater Mill Association (OSMA), to prevent the mill’s demolition and to preserve the physical presence of the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. In the 1950s, OSMA opened a museum of industrial history at Slater Mill, and by the 1970s, the U.S. Department of the Interior recognized the campus, including its three historic structures and mill race, as a National Historic Landmark District. Nearly 100 years later, OSMA continues to fulfill and further this mission, and serves as an educational anchor and community champion in the Blackstone River Valley and statewide.
The mill is located at the Slater Mill Historic Site along with two other historic buildings, the 1810 Wilkinson Mill and the 1758 Sylvanus Brown House. The latter features a collection of textile artifacts such as a loom, a spinning wheel, and other tools used to weave and make cloth by hand. Later on, this manual process was replicated in the Slater Mill but with machinery, making this house a predecessor of the Slater Mill. It is also believed that Samuel Slater spent his first night in Pawtucket in this house. As an added point of interest, paranormal activity has been reported in all three historic buildings. Some visitors have heard children voices, particularly a boy voice and the staff have found items misplaced or found in a different location, especially in the Sylvanus Brown House. Slater Mill is currently visited by 10,000 school children each year, and 25,000 additional adult and family visitors who come for tours, events, festivals, to make research inquiries, and to experience a physical connection with American History. Photography and video are allowed inside the museums. Visitors can only tour the museums with a guided tour. The site is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m from March to November. The mill is a National Registered Historic Place, a National Historic Landmark, and belongs to the Blackstone River Valley National Historic Park.

As your Secretary of State, I believe it should be easier for Rhode Island’s small businesses to succeed and grow jobs. By visiting local companies and talking to entrepreneurs across the state, I’ve learned that a key way government can help businesses is by communicating clearly. In that spirit, I would like to remind Rhode Island limited liability companies (LLC’s) that your annual filing period is approaching at the start of September. I will also provide you with easy ways to avoid having your annual filing rejected by our Business Services Division and explain how you can help enhance commerce in our state by taking a short four question survey.
Filing an Annual Report for Your LLC
Each calendar year following the year of formation, your annual report is due. The period for limited liability companies (LLC’s) to file annual reports with our Business Services Division is September 1st through November 1st. You can easily file online by using our Business Portal at: http://sos.ri.gov/ divisions/business-portal. If you do not wish to file online, you must submit a paper form provided by our office. Screenshots of online filing forms will not be accepted as a paper filing. The filing fee is $50, with a late filing penalty of an additional $25 applied after December 1st. Please note that there is an online filing access fee of $2.50.

Annual reports allow the Business Services Division to collect basic data about entities and organizations doing business in Rhode Island. Much of today’s economy is fueled by data and information. As the Department of State works to empower and engage all Rhode Islanders and to enhance commerce across the state, it is useful for local businesses to have insight into economic trends and the types of businesses that call Rhode Island home. That is why, as part of the annual report process, we are
asking business corporations, limited liability companies and non-profit corporations to answer four short survey questions. The survey data that has been provided to our office has allowed us to create the RI Business Data Hub. This month marks 50 years since the Bowen’s Wharf Company was incorporated with the Secretary of State’s office. In that time the company, led by president Bart Dunbar, has done a remarkable job of evolving. For example, Bowen’s Wharf was on of the first harbor-front restoration projects in the United States.
