Meet Bri Duffy
Local RI Woman COMPETES FOR MAXIM MAGAZINE COVERGIRL CONTEST Providence, Rhode Island’s very own Bri Duffy, believes that everyone’s body is beautiful and that social media creates an unrealistic beauty standard for women to live up to. Unfortunately, this misleading image can cause body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and eating disorders among many women. When girls compare their bodies to what is seen in the media, it causes them to have a poor body image. Female celebrities are constantly photoshopped to make their bodies look perfect and clear up any flaws they might have, such as making their waist thinner or making their breasts larger. Bri is bringing awareness to this issue as a contestant in the 2019

Maxim Covergirl Competition which benefits the Homes for Wounded Warriors Foundation. This years winner will receive a $25,000 cash prize and a lavish photo shoot with world famous photographer, Giles Bensimon, which will appear on the cover of Maxim Magazine. When Bri isn’t modeling, or crafting cocktails at The Gentleman Cigar Lounge in Cranston, you can find her playing with her newly adopted pup, Sadie, cooking up an Italian feast with her family, laughing hysterically with her friends, or trying to take over the world one Instagram post at a time. Bri has advanced to the third round of the competition and cannot do it without your help! While his top priority is, of course, delicious food, Josh’s vision for HG80 encompasses the entire dining experience. He entertains guests with music and a screen showing puppy and kitten videos, fun facts, and trivia questions. Article by Amit Basnet
After more than 15 years as a bartender/mixologist, Josh Berner traded in his bottle openers and wine keys for tongs and a spatula to open HG80, a food truck based in Providence, RI. HG80 serves untraditional tacos, potato chips, and sodas. Never doing anything the “traditional” way, Josh has always had an independent streak, which drove his motivation to open his own business. For many years, Josh worked in some of the finest restaurants and cocktail bars in the country, inventing original cocktail recipes. The experience of working alongside and learning from award-winning chefs gave him the confidence to turn the focus of his creativity from cocktails to solid food. Eschewing traditional taco ingredients, Josh’s tacos are inspired by dishes and flavors from international cuisines, resulting in tacos reminiscent of Chicken Parmesan, Indian curry and Rueben sandwiches, among others. He sources many ingredients from local farms and makes almost everything from scratch – even the sodas! While his top priority is, of course, delicious food, Josh’s vision for HG80 encompasses the entire dining experience. He entertains guests with music and a screen showing puppy and kitten videos, fun facts, and trivia questions. HG80 isn’t the first successful project Josh has helmed. As a student at Northwestern University, he founded Boomshaka, a percussion and dance troupe that is still flourishing more than 20 years later. Even so, when it came to starting his business, he knew he
needed help. He felt comfortable with the “restaurant” part of the restaurant business, but he wasn’t as confident with the “business” part. So he contacted Amit Basnet of RISBDC for help, and it was one of the best decisions he’s made. Amit provided tools, advice, and contacts that helped him gain confidence and motivation. Josh’s untraditional menu differentiates his business, but he knows it can be a hard sell. He’s comforted by Amit’s advice about having working capital available as the business grows towards selfsustainability. Every day, after his first sale, he smiles and says, “Didn’t make nothing!” This past year Josh was able to expand his business enough to hire three part time employees and is looking forward to what is to come next for HG80. Learn more about HG80 by visiting their website at HG80food.com. If you’re ready to start writing your business success story, attend one of our upcoming workshops or set up a free one-on-one counseling session today. Register at RISBDC.org today. The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center at URI is part of a national network of nearly 1,000 business assistance centers that provide counseling and training to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Partially funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, we help businesses to succeed from start-up to maturity. Photography provided by Kevin Ginestet.

Koteshin-Ryu
KOTESHIN-RYU
“Train for a better you” MARTIAL ARTS
Article by Sarah Day
I am sure everyone can agree, life is so unpredictable. Growing up, my sister and I were always forced by our parents into taking self-defense classes. We never understood the point of them, and we often overlooked these skills, thinking something bad would never happen to us and we would never need to put these skills to use. Brutal attacks only happen in movies, right? In reality, attacks happen every single day and can happen to anyone. Especially young women and children. Koteshin-Ryu is a martial arts studio in the city of Warwick, offering many different types of classes for all ages. Some of the classes offered are Kenpo, Kali, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense. The instructors at Koteshin-Ryu teach techniques, which not only are meant to train your mental and physical health, but also prepare you for any unexpected situations that may arise. I have been lucky enough to partake in a handful of the self-defense classes offered at Koteshin-Ryu, and I can honestly say my confidence level has turned me into an overall better person. Even though I am just 5’4“ tall, I know the proper techniques and motions that can get me out of a dangerous situation and I
strongly believe everyone could benefit from them. Between the training and practicing, I have also felt better physically. It’s more tiring than you’d think! Whether you are a parent wanting to sign your child up for a sport this year, a real estate agent wanting to be able to protect yourself while having an open house, or a teenager that is dealing with the bullying epidemic in school, I would recommend these classes to anyone! By learning the basics of self-defense, you help prepare yourself for unforeseen, real-world circumstances. For more information about Koteshin-Ryu, visit their website at www.ksrwarwick.com or give them a call at 401-738-0750 to find out more information on their classes!

Salmon Patties with Homemade Tartar Sauce September has arrived, BUT there are still many warm summer days to come… I would like to introduce you to a fresh and healthy seafood meal, which is inexpensive and delicious. My problem always was that one cannot buy anywhere fresh salmon patties for making a good salmon burger. If you know of a place, please fill me in because fresh patties are far better than any frozen ones or even canned salmon…CAN you imagine? You start this recipe with fresh store bought salmon, then you grind it down in a food processor, season, fry and top it with a refreshing tartar sauce and there you have a wonderful source of a healthy and flavorful protein.

1 lb Salmon
Serves 4
Cooking Instructions: Process the salmon in the food processor until it is minced. Then, in a small bowl combine salmon, onion, parsley, lemon juice and pepper. Stir in sour cream, egg and bread crumbs. Shape into 4 of 4in diameter patties. It helps if you press the mixture into e.g. a cookie cutter to better hold it together. Heat oil in skillet over medium heat and cook patties about 4 minutes on each side, or until lightly browned, turning gently.
Tartar Sauce
Ingredients: ½ cup low fat mayonnaise
1 tsp coarse ground mustard
1/8 cup relish
Salt and pepper
1 tbsp white wine vinegar Mix ingredients altogether and serve on the side. Enjoy! Submitted by Holly Specht, My Chef Lara LLC

With Breast Cancer awareness month right around the corner the community is coming together to host events to raise recognition and funds to help find a cure. Breast cancer has touched many individuals, including Carl DeRosa, Lang’s Bowlarama general manager. In April of 2009, Carl lost his mother, Carol, to a long fight of breast cancer. Carol adored her family, you could often find her cooking amazing meals for her beloved husband, Carlo, her four children, and grandchildren. Women in
Business Retreat COMING TO PROVIDENCE THREE-DAY EVENT FOCUSES ON EMPOWERMENT, FAITH AND TEAM BUILDING. Many people who either start a new company or look for an opportunity are often beset by numerous challenges. They may be unaware of the resources available to them, such as local networking groups, Chambers of Commerce or business agencies that can direct them to other sources. Those who are not connected can fall behind and/or feel overwhelmed by the sheer effort it can take to make such dreams real. Women might be limited in their quests to excel because they lack the contact or know where to look for help. While there are many ways to obtain information (such as the activities mentioned above or contacting state agencies for details), they could feel alone and without a direction—until now. The 2019 Unleash Business and Leadership Retreat takes place from October 18-20, 2019, at the Providence Marriott on 1 Orms St. The event features networking, faith and worship services, guest speakers and attendees sharing their stories of how they succeeded in their respective industries. Event Organizer Nicole Dias said the idea stemmed from wanting to help other women become empowered. Her events have been done in cities throughout the country, and the response at each venue has been positive, Dias said. “We are getting people to share their stories regarding how they turned their struggles and issues into something to be modeled after,” said Dias, who is also the Founder/CEO of Visionary Networking Group that will sponsor the Retreat. “These events are gaining widespread interest because of the messages of perseverance and overcoming obstacles to achieve. That’s why people are trying to attach themselves to other successful people. My hope is making that happen and seeing where these new partnerships go.” The Unleash Business and Leadership Retreat brings together bright minds from various areas of industry and corporate/faith leadership to a new destination annually. The purpose of the Unleash Business and Leadership Retreat is helping women succeed in living life to their fullest potential. Visionary Network Group’s mission is to educate, motivate and inspire women who are on a mission to excel in business, personal development and spiritual development. The Unleash Retreat focuses on empowering women to take action by providing essential KEYS in the areas of Entrepreneurship/Career, Faith, and Self-Worth. Dias said attendees will be empowered by a dynamic panel of speakers and topics.
