Support Rhode island

Businesses During The Coronavirus Outbreak by Sam DaCosta As the United States and the rest of the world are taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, local businesses are at risk. While staying inside and social distancing are necessary to keep us healthy and safe, this is already affecting the Rhode Island businesses that make our state so special. While customers may not be visiting stores, gyms, studios, and restaurants, the bills are going to keep coming for these businesses. Federal and local governments are working on relief efforts but this may not be enough to help your favorite local businesses keep their doors open. These businesses and their employees need all the help they can get. Here are a few things that you can do to help support local businesses at a time when they desperately need it.

Buy a gift card. Purchasing a gift card is a great way to provide

a business with the money it needs when it needs it the most. You can spend it later when things go back to normal.

Ask about alternatives. Don’t just assume that the businesses

you love are closed or can’t provide you with the products and services you need. Contact them and find out if they are making small changes to stay in business. Maybe your favorite local craft store is offering deliveries, or maybe your favorite restaurant is still serving takeout.

Spread the word. If you see that a business is working hard to

make adjustments and stay open, let others know! Whether it’s by sharing posts on social media or by texting your friends, the free publicity could go a long way for these businesses. Even sharing local restaurant take out menus could make a big difference.

Buy Online, LOCALLY. If you’re looking to buy products while

avoiding the crowd, don’t just buy straight from large companies like Amazon. Check to see if any local stores are offering online orders first.

Don’t just assume that the businesses you love are closed or can’t provide you with the products and services you need.

Try not to cancel. If you have a membership, subscription, or pre-paid reservation, do your best not to cancel. Times are tough and we understand that this may not be an option for everyone. But, if you can afford it, try to continue paying for gym memberships or subscriptions - even if businesses can no longer provide services to you. These types of businesses depend on regular income to pay the bills and their employees. Show some love. If you can’t continue to pay for subscriptions,

leave positive reviews for the businesses you love on Google and Yelp. Unfortunately, some businesses will have to close temporarily but leaving positive reviews could help drive traffic to businesses once they open back up. At a time where a lot seems to be out of our control, there is so much we can do as a community to help our local businesses survive this pandemic. These businesses are working hard to stay afloat now it’s time to do your part! BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

TEST DRIVE

Flood Ford Invited Us To Drive The

2020 Ford Ranger Lariat Test Drive and Article by Mike Casale

When the Ford Ranger was first introduced in 1983, Ford made it clear that they wanted an alternative option to the higher priced, full-sized truck offerings. They also wanted a truck that would be practical and fun to drive. The Ranger kept in this mindset, and it lasted for three generations until Ford decided to halt production on the Ranger in 2012. During this time, Ford began to realize that the mid-size truck segment was growing rapidly. While many other automakers rushed to join the mid-size truck segment over the last 5 years, either through new model offerings, or complete redesigns, Ford did the opposite. They took their time, knowing that this truck would be willing to do things a little differently than the rest of the competition. After learning of the new features that the Ranger has to offer, I decided to take a journey down to Flood Ford of East Greenwich, and test one out for myself. As a previous Ford Ranger owner, I was aware of the history that this truck name would have to live up to. From the moment that I arrived at the dealership, I could see the enthusiasm that the Flood Ford team had for this all new truck. Sales Manager David Cathey introduced me to Robert Bell, a long-time Sales Consultant and Ford Enthusiast. Before I was even able to gather camera, Robert already had picked out a black Crew Cab Lariat, with the tan leather interior and the optional FX4 OffRoad Package. This was a night and day difference from any Ranger that I had ever seen in my past, and Robert certainly came prepared to explain to me the significant features about this truck, and what separates it from the competition. For starters, it is available with two cab configurations: extended cab with a 6-foot bed or a crew cab with a 5-foot bed. There are also three trim levels: XL, XLT and Lariat. All Rangers are equipped with an EcoBoost (turbocharged) 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine (270 hp, 310 pound-feet of torque) paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Now, for those of you that hear 4-cylinder in a mid-size truck, hang on for a moment. This is not your typical 4-cylinder engine. From the muscular grunt, to the pushback in your seat power, this truck feels like a motor that should be double its actual liter size. Even better, this Ranger is one of the segment leaders in towing capacity, at right around 7500 pounds. In terms of technology and features, the Lariat that I drove also included all of the XLT’s equipment plus 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, power-adjustable and heated front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch center touchscreen with Ford’s Sync 3 interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a sound system by Bang & Olufsen, which by the way, was as loud and crisp as any high end luxury car system that I have listed to in a long time.

10

BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

As far as handling and overall driving experience, this new Ranger was more than capable of on-road or off-road demands, but yet, always felt comfortable and easy to drive. If you are looking for a mid-size truck, and would like to look at a new innovative design, come check out the new 2020 Ranger at Flood Ford of East Greenwich or Narragansett.

I used Hersey with almonds because i love the taste and texture that the crunchy almonds give to this pie. You can use any chocolate bar you like and the recipe will work great. Some readers have used half milk chocolate and half a special dark.

Ashley Bendiksen is an internationally known professional speaker and consultant who helps people to achieve success no matter what adversity they may have encountered in life. She was born and raised in Massachusetts and is proud to be a Newport, Rhode Island resident. Ashley loves Newport for its architecture, history and beaches. As someone who also travels, she says the people are second to none. They are authentic, cool, friendly and say hello to everyone. While Ashley is widely sought after and admired by students and professionals alike, that was not always the case. At age 14, Ashley began to date. Unfortunately, this dating relationship became abusive. She did not tell anyone, and faced numerous struggles as a student. It also began a cycle of abusive relationships. Years later, an abusive boyfriend caused her to drop out of college. She was physically abused during an argument and decided to seek help from the criminal justice system at age 20. This marked the moment that life turned around for Ashley.

Ashley became very involved with community service. She applied to Salve Regina, including an outstanding resume and essay detailing her turn around, work ethic, dedication to community service and her aspirations. Much to her surprise, she was accepted. As a non-traditional Salve student Ashley: • Discovered she really loved learning. • Figured out how to learn and apply her abilities. • Focused on how to study “smart” to learn as well as pass exams. • Recorded lectures and replayed them while commuting. • Chose to set a big academic goal, and used this vision to keep her motivated. She graduated #1 in her class!!! Today, Ashley is a successful business woman and community leader. She built an accomplished career specializing in victim services, advocacy, prevention and communications. Now, she is self-employed pursuing her passions in her work every day.

Ashley Bendiksen

Inspirational Speaker

Ashley offers the following suggestions for everyone dealing with challenges in life: •

Look for opportunities when experiencing chaos and struggle. When life presents challenges, you can discover more about who you are and what you want. Seek help from others (including Ashley) if this would be of benefit to you. • Find the courage to take action if you want change to happen. • Know that your past or your present circumstances don’t define who you are. It is always within your power to become who you want to be, and to take ownership over your life. • Establish a strong social network. Be of help and support to others. Engage with something larger and volunteer. • Remember, you can find success on an unconventional path. Non-traditional students can be #1!!! Your career and your life can unfold in a number of ways, and never needs to fit any mold. Learn from Ashley by reading the articles and references she offers teens, parents, corporate executives and anyone needing encouragement on her website AshleyBendiksen.Com.

Invite Ashley to speak to your organization about: • • • •

Local Real E

over $170,00 “ Sherri Mercurio, Broker/Owner of The Mercurio Group Real Estate, had a mission to simply make a difference.” Breast cancer has claimed the lives of millions of innocent people. It is estimated that 1 in 8 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. The good news is that death rates have declined drastically over the years, due to the fundraising efforts made by incredible charities, and the generosity of millions of supporters. Sherri Mercurio, Broker/Owner of The Mercurio Group Real Estate, had a mission to simply make a difference. She wanted to create a Gala event to not only honor the amazing Survivors and Thrivers, but to fundraise in order to help make a difference even after the night was over. Bra’s for a Cause was the result. We had the pleasure of speaking with Sherri to learn more about this annual fundraising event:

Q: How did Bra’s For A Cause start? Sherri Mercurio, Broker/Owner of The Mercurio Group Real Estate

A: At the time I was the local President of the Women’s Council of Realtors, and thought it was a great opportunity to host a fundraiser to give back to our local community. My colleague Kerri Gemma, who is also a Realtor, teamed up with me and we took off running with this event. From the very start, I had a goal to raise at least $10,000 per year. We started off a little shaky but still raised $8,000 our first year. From there, it just got better. Going from $17,000 to $26,000 to $34,000 and in just 7 years, I can proudly say that the 2019 Bra’s for a Cause event raised $170,000 in just one night! Q: What is the Bra’s for a Cause event about?

Sherri Mercurio (right) and Kerri Gemma (left)

A: For the past 7 years, I have partnered up with local Real Estate professionals, Attorneys and Mortgage Professionals and business owners that strut their stuff down a runway at Twin River Casino to model a Bra that the audience bids on. The best part? The models that we choose are each escorted down the runway by 2 breast cancer survivors to cheer them on and get the crowd energized. Every year has a different theme, which determines how the bras are designed. There are tons of silent auction items to bid on that night as well as an abundance of appetizers and a full dinner. It is a night full of great company, many laughs and forever memories. Q: What efforts go into hosting this event every year? A: I spend the entire year planning this event, which takes place in November. When

we first started it was a challenge. I made all of the centerpieces and transported them to the venue. I found the talent, rehearsed with them, and put the entire show together. I begged business partners to make me stage props that we continue to use yearly. There are so many silent auction baskets that needed to be put together, taken to the venue and organized. You name it we did it. It is truly a full time job hosting an event this large. And with that being said, I’m so happy to say that Gloria Gemma has taken this event under their wings and offered all of their assistance. There is no doubt in my mind

14

Estate Broker Raises

00 towards Breast Cancer that this event will raise over $250,000 in the next few years. My original 10 year plan was to raise $100,000 and with the help of the amazing team at Gloria Gemma, we surpassed that and I am more then confident we can reach $250,000.

Q: Why do you do it? A: I do it because I can. I do it because I’m healthy and my close friends need these

programs that Gloria Gemma organizes. Without funding these local programs can not last. When you get involved with an organization such as this, you will quickly see that you are not just part of an organization, you are a part of a family. Seeing women and men my age go through the terrible fight of breast cancer, or any kind of cancer, is gut-wrenching. And so I strive every year to do better. It is so incredible to see this event in person. We have cancer survivors on the stage with their friends that are currently stage 4 thrivers. We have many women that were a part of the show in the past that are watching from above cheering us on. The bond these women have is the most amazing thing one could experience. If this event can get these women and men out of the house for a fun night out to forget about the world for a day, then sign me up for another year! It means the world to them and gives them hope. When I see the smile on their faces strutting the runway, I know I did my job.

Q: What does all the money you have raised go towards? A: The #1 reason why I do so much for The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation is because I know that for every dollar donated, 90 cents of that goes directly back into the local programs. These programs include Gloria’s Angels Meal program which provides a healthy meal delivery service to those who can not leave their home. They offer comfort care bags to newly diagnosed patients, oncology massage for patients after treatment, support groups, arts and crafts, education, and so much more. Q: Who has been apart of making this event possible? A: This event would not exist without the many sponsors, emcees, attendees, volunteers and the hundreds who have helped out tremendously throughout the years. My partner in crime Kerri Gemma is a angel. This gal is the master of donations, sponsorship’s, handling all of the silent auction items, live bidding the night of the event and way too much for one paragraph. Lucy, Ethel and Bryan from GG rock my world. Life without them would be boring. The models are a pure joy to watch strut down the runway every year! I could not thank the entire Gloria Gemma family enough for taking our event under their wing. It takes a village. I’m so excited for things to come! 2020 planning is underway. If you are interested in supporting this amazing cause, or interested in being a sponsor, contact Sherri Mercurio today at 401-699-6666 to see how you can be a part of this event! Together we can fight the fight and find a cure!

Home Improvement Projects To Tackle While Stuck Indoors | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Home Improvement Projects TO TACKLE While Stuck Indoors As everyone is stuck inside to protect themselves and others, this could be an ideal time to tackle some of those home improvement and maintenance projects. You don’t need to spend a fortune on these projects!

Don’t know where to start? Here are a few simple projects to get you motivated... Caulk your bathtub or shower

Over time, the seal around your tub or shower can wear and crack, allowing moisture to pool inside, which creates a perfect environment for mold. Caulk any areas you see this happening.

Patch any holes

Making Government Work Better for Small Businesses: Resources for a Challenging Time By Nick Domings First and foremost, I want to thank Rhode Island’s small business community for coming together to do what is necessary to protect the health and safety of Rhode Islanders amid the COVID-19 pandemic. These are unprecedented times, and the resilience of Rhode Islanders has been evident these past few weeks. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy – that’s why we’re feeling the effects so acutely with many forced to close or operate in a limited capacity right now. In times like this, it’s all the more important for government to be there to help. I want to thank my incredible Business Services staff for continuing to take appointments by phone and coming up with ways to safely process your important business filings, like setting up a drop box outside our offices in Providence. These challenging times have really tested the systems we have developed since I came into office. I am pleased to report that so far, we are seamlessly continuing to serve Rhode Island’s business community. A lot of that service is now coming through our completely overhauled Business Services website at sos.ri.gov. The newly designed website has streamlined content that you will find is relevant and user-friendly. The website also reduces the need for people to come into our offices in person. In fact, many common business interactions with my office can now be done entirely online. This helps more Rhode Islanders do their part in maintaining responsible social distancing to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

The new Business Services website was developed through collaboration between the Rhode Island Department of State, private businesses, non-profit organizations and constituents. Involving all of these stakeholders at multiple levels ensured that the Business Services website was re-designed with the user in mind. So, whether you’re a business that still needs to file annual reports or someone interested in starting a non-profit to help people in this difficult time, I’m proud to say that our new Business Services website can help make the process a lot easier. All of the content on the site is available in English and Spanish, and has direct links to groups that provide technical assistance. As your Secretary of State, I’ve made sure that we not only implement new ideas and programs, but that we fundamentally change the way government works. Restructuring our office and its services is helping us meet your needs in this currently difficult time. Looking beyond into the future, I also hope the new Business Services website will provide a starting point for our next generation of business owners and entrepreneurs to succeed when Rhode Island can return to business as usual. And we will get there, together. Until then, my team will be ready and willing to help however we can. We are here for you. Just call (401-2223040) or send us an email (corporations@sos.ri.gov). Stay safe and stay healthy, Rhode Island. Nick Domings, Public Information Officer at the Rhode Island Department of State

Catanzaro Food Products was established out of the love for cooking and baking. Steve’s desire for cooking pasta sauce (gravy) and Kristen’s desire for baking started many years ago. Together with their experience and authentic recipes from their families, Catanzaro Food Products was born. Their White Wine Biscuits are from a recipe that is over 100 years old that has been handed down through generations of Catanzaro’s. The original shape, texture, and taste have not changed over the years and we still make them by hand without the assistance of modern machinery. These unique biscuits are baked to be on the crunchy side and are best enjoyed with coffee, tea, milk, wine, or just as a healthy snack! www.catanzarofoodproducts.com | (401) 255-1700

Ocean State Pepper Co. Founded in October of 2017, Ocean State Pepper Co. has been hard at work developing new flavors and blends to keep on-trend in the food industry. Dave Conner, an executive chef by trade and alumni of Johnson and Wales University, came to Rhode Island following his passion for cooking. Together with Katie Evans the two have been working tirelessly to gain traction with their web-based store, and most recently have been coordinating with local boutique vendors, as well as working hand-in-hand with local restaurateurs, spreading our love of food, cooking, and spices throughout the Ocean State. Dave is now full-time pepper...and you will be seeing a lot of him every week at numerous Farmer’s Markets throughout Mass, Connecticut, and of course, Lil’ Rhody. www.rhodypepper.com | (401) 316-7096

Article by Amit Basnet

Rhode Island business owners Paige and Jonathan Voccia have always dreamed of owning their own business. And now the married couple, who share a commitment to helping those in their community with speech, communication, and cognitive difficulties, are already celebrating the fast-paced success of their speech therapy business. “We were drawn to creating something of our own, building it from the ground up and working as a team to make that happen,” says trained speech-language pathologist Paige. Upon recognizing a growing need for outpatient speech therapy services, the couple finally took a leap into entrepreneurship. Voccia found a Cranston location for her business and worked on getting a website and logo off the ground. However, she needed some help with developing a marketing plan to attract new business. She requested assistance from the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center Director, which paired her with Marketing Counselor Julie Loffredi. Voccia says the RISBDC was a great resource. “From our first meeting, [Julie] helped me to set clear and achievable goals to help grow our business and better understand how to market and brand our practice. She provided wonderful resources and ideas to help us grow our brand, connect with the community, and reach individuals and families seeking speech therapy for themselves or their loved ones.”

Aunt Carries 1 2 4 0 O c e an R OAd , Narragans e t t , R hode Isl and Aunt Carrie’s, a famous seafood shack on the shore of our beautiful Ocean State, has a long history of serving up the most delicious seafood, and more recently, tasty baked goodies, such as breads, and pies. It is probably best known as the birthplace of the clam cake, which has become a classic Rhode Island treat. Aunt Carrie’s was built over 100 years ago. While the business has grown tremendously since then, the original counter area and front dining room still remains. The roots of Aunt Carrie’s old fashioned homemade style restaurant came simply from selling lemonade and homemade clam chowder.

Carrie Cooper and her husband Ulysses realized that there was no place around Point Judith for a cold drink. This brought them to start selling cold lemonade to the local fishermen and campers. They then decided to start cooking for the fishermen and came up with an incredible clam cake and chowder recipe. Little did they know this would turn into something much bigger... Carrie and her husband purchased the property where the restaurant is now located. Since opening, Carrie’s relatives have carried on the legacy working at the restaurant. Carrie’s daughter, Gertrude, took over the family run business for her mother who passed in 1964. If it weren’t for the family, Aunt Carrie’s wouldn’t be where they are today! How did Aunt Carrie’s get its name? Well, between Carrie’s six children and many nieces and nephews, someone was always yelling “Aunt Carrie!” And there you have it. Four generations later, Elsie is still running the restaurant we all love today. As the weather starts to warm up, head down to the shore to experience the rich history and their delicious clam chowder. The recipes have lasted this long for a reason! Aunt Carrie’s is the place for excellent seafood, great views, and a staff that makes everyone feel at home. To see what else they have on their menu visit auntcarriesri.com.
