With over 30 different rums to try, traditional and signature craft cocktails along with an island inspired food menu, no matter what day of the week you visit you’ll feel like you’re on island time. Article by Jessica Krawiec

Located in the heart of Providence, High Tides Island Grille and Tiki Bar offers something more than just food and drinks — it offers an escape. With over 30 different rums to try, traditional and signature craft cocktails along with an island inspired food menu, no matter what day of the week you visit you’ll feel like you’re on island time. For those of you who are rum enthusiasts, High Tides has endless combinations of rum flights to sample — and is continuing to add to their collection! This is a great way to sample rums from around the world! Here’s a few that we fell in love with: Mt. Gay Rum Punch (on tap - Barbados), Clement 10 year (Martinique), Thomas Tew (Rhode Island) and more! The founders’ goal sounds simple, but was a tricky one to pull off. They wanted to open a unique restaurant serving delicious island inspired food and drinks, as well as to create a place where guests of all ages — and dogs — could come together and experience unique flavors and art and culture of island living without having to leave Providence. What came to life was a truly unique dining experience — authentic food, a family-style dining experience in a bright, comfortable setting. In addition to the dining room, the new patio is open and ready for lounging in style!

If you’re looking for the island experience without traveling to the beach, this is the spot! When a few co-workers and I dined at High Tides, we lounged outside on the new patio surrounded by the buildings of Providence and fresh smells lingering from the kitchen. As a dog lover, I was pleasantly surprised to see people weren’t the only ones lounging on the patio — dogs were too! I ordered the Citrus Grilled Shrimp and Scallop Skewers, served with a fresh mango salsa, organic brown rice and chefs choice of vegetable. The food came out quickly and the flavor combinations were delicious. In addition to ordering food, we shared a Mt. Gay Rum Punch bowl with the table: Mt. Gay Eclipse Rum, Malibu, fresh lime, pineapple and orange juices. Refreshing and fruity, this was the perfect drink to share with friends and pair with this entree. This unique space is great for birthday celebrations, rehearsal dinners and office outings. Reserve space for a romantic dinner for two or book the entire restaurant for a party up to 150. Through the conveince of OpenTable, customers can reserve and manage their reservations, free and instantly — anytime, anywhere. For more information about High Tides Island Grille and Tiki Bar, visit www.high-tides.com. They are located at 373 Richmond Street in Providence. You can also book a reservation online, or call 401-441-6070.

Urban Greens After several years of grassroots development and planning, the board of the Urban Greens Co-op Market is thrilled to announce the opening of Providence’s only member-owned co-op grocery store. Urban Greens is open to all shoppers, whether they are members or not.

The grand opening celebration will feature free food samples from local vendors, live music, goodie bags, and dozens of special sales throughout the store. Urban Greens’ mission is to be open to all and support the health and well-being of our customers by offering nutritious, affordable food that is sustainably sourced, culturally inclusive, and supportive of local food production. All are welcome to stop in and experience their locally-owned, beautiful new grocery store. “We never would have gotten here without the support of a lot of people who believed in this project,” said board member Philip Trevvett. “The opening of Urban Greens increases our access to healthy and local foods, and we want to acknowledge that there is still a lot of work to expand that access. We are committed to continuing to grow access to healthy and local foods over time, both through programming within the store, and through community outreach, education and relationshipbuilding outside of our brick and mortar building.” Urban Greens is a full-service grocery store stocked with fresh organic produce, delicious prepared foods available to go, and

a significant selection of bulk items — such as granola, spices, and flour — that can be purchased at low prices with minimal packaging. In addition, the co-op strives to meet the needs of the diverse communities in Providence, so shoppers will find a mix of cooking oils, produce, and grains common to West African, South East Asian, and Latino diets, among others. Shoppers will also enjoy Urban Greens Basics, a budget line of 100 staple items throughout the store. A 356-square-foot community room will feature free and paid events, such as community cooking classes, workshops, and more. Urban Greens currently has more than 1,300 members. Membership costs between $10 and $160 per year, making it truly accessible to all. Qualified low-income members qualify for a 5% discount on all items. To become a member, visit https://urbangreens.com/membership/. The $2.2 million project is expected to generate 28 part-time and full-time jobs. The project received an investment from the Rhode Island Foundation, a Rebuild Rhode Island Tax Credit, a loan from RI Commerce, and a loan from The Cooperative Fund of New England. The project also received grants from the Rhode Island Foundation, LASA in conjunction with the RI Department of Environmental Management, and the Henry P. Kendall Foundation. All told, more than a third of the financing came from families and individuals, an indication of the community’s support for this new grocery store.

Comprehensive Dental Care For

Children P E D I AT R I C D E N TA L C A R E O F R I

Article by Jessica Krawiec Pediatric Dental Care of RI is dedicated to providing the highest quality and comprehensive dental care to children from birth to 18 years old throughout Southern New England. Meet Dr. Jason Hencler! Born and raised in Rhode Island, he earned his DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. After which, he completed a 2 year residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Providence, RI where he earned an Advance Education in Pediatric Dentistry certificate. After starting Pediatric Dental Care in 2014, Dr. Hencler resides in Warwick with his wife Kathie, sons William and Benjamin, and daughter Emma. He was recognized and honored by receiving the Rhode Island Monthly Top Dentist Award in 2018. Dr. Hencler is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry which is a pediatric dentist whose credentials have been verified, has successfully completed voluntary examinations, and demonstrates specialized knowledge and skill. A Diplomate is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care through a voluntary commitment to lifelong learning, which Dr. Hencler and his staff have been dedicated to providing since opening in 2014. Along with his caring staff, Dr. Hencler creates a fun and friendly environment that will help your child feel at ease during their visit. Prevention is their top priority, so its important to educate patients about oral hygiene, nutrition, and other factors that play a crucial role in cavity prevention and establishing life long healthy habits. Childhood caries are the #1 chronic illness in the US, and PDCRI is constantly looking for ways to reduce this rate through education and early prevention. Dental caries (also known as tooth decay) is 4x more common than asthma in children and 100% preventable. The PDCRI goal is to lower these rates through education and prevention. They frequently make local visits to preschools, daycares, and elementary schools to perform activities, read books, and show children the dentist can be fun. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends every child establish a dental home by age 1. A dental home should provide age specific comprehensive oral health care and include all aspects of oral care delivery in an easily accessible, coordinated, and family oriented manner. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventative and routine oral health care. Make Pediatric Dental Care of Rhode Island your child’s dental home. The office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 8-5 pm, Friday 8-1 pm, and the last Saturday of the month during the school year 8-1 pm. Contact our front desk at (401) 825-6062. Preschools and Daycares that are interested in a free dental lesson may contact our office for request.

Crescent Park Carousel 700 Bullocks Point Ave, Riverside, Rhode Island The Crescent Park Carousel was built in 1895 by Charles I.D. Looff, one of the earliest and foremost carousel designers. It is nationally recognized as a true masterpiece of wood sculpture. The carousel contains 62 beautifully hand carved figures and four fanciful chariots. Elaborate embellishments of decorative panels, beveled mirrors, faceted glass jewels, electric lights, colored sandwich glass windows and its original band organ music surround flying steeds to create Looff’s “Total Carousel Experience.”

Saved in the 1970’s by a handful of residents, the Crescent Park Carousel was placed on the National Register of Historic sites and places in 1976. In 1985, the Rhode Island General Assembly proclaimed the carousel as the State Jewel of American Folk Art and in 1987, the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, designated the carousel as a National Historic Landmark. In the 116 years of operation, the ride rotated enough times to have gone around the Earth 33 times! With an annual average ridership of 100,000, the Crescent Park Carousel has had 11.6 million riders, and still counting. Their goal has always been and remains — to keep the carousel alive for generations to come. The Crescent Park Carousel Preservation Association is dedicated to the continued restoration of the historic carousel, located at 700 Bullocks Point Avenue in Riverside, Rhode Island. The preservation is a 501c3 non-profit organization without the support and generosity of the community, this would not be possible. Donations can be sent to: Crescent Park Carousel Preservation Association, 145 Taunton Avenue, East Providence RI 02914.

FIGHT BREAST CANCER Supporting Elvira Protano’s Gift for Hope Foundation

Since her breast cancer diagnosis several years ago, Elvira Protano of Woonsocket has waged a fierce onewoman battle against the disease. Instead of feeling sorry for herself and thinking there was nothing that she could do to make a difference, Protano not only beat back cancer, but started a non-profit group devoted to aiding anyone else dealing with this disease. Five years ago, she began “Elvira’s Gift for Hope Foundation” not only as a coping mechanism for herself, but to show others that someone is fighting for them also. Her mission differs from others in that the money she raises does not go toward research. She puts her

money into paying off bills and other necessities for these impacted families. Protano knows first-hand the hardships that happen when doctors inform patients of a cancer diagnosis. “It’s not just the person who is affected by the cancer; the entire family is as well,” said Protano, herself a Stage 2 Breast Cancer survivor. She underwent a double mastectomy, several months of chemo and reconstructive surgery before doctors told her she is in remission. “When someone in the family has this, their spouse of other family member may also have to time off from work to take them to their appointments or pick up their medications. When

My hope is making people feel a little better about themselves and giving them a smile during their time of stress. Breast Cancer had no idea who they would be dealing with when I got diagnosed. It’s messing with the wrong woman! both spouses are not working, that creates a situation where people fall behind on their payments and other problems happen as a result.” Protano said she was fortunate in that she worked at home as a CPA/Accountant when she learned of the news. Had she commuted to work, then she might have had to quit her job because she would have missed time at work. Most people are not as lucky in that regard—their jobs might not be there when they get back from treatments. Elvira’s Gift for Hope Foundation recently received its 501 (c) (3) non-profit designation, which Protano said took a year to complete. She said how thrilled she is getting this distinction because it shows companies and individuals that her cause as “legit” when she requests help. Protano has used the money she generated to buy groceries, clothes and toys during the holidays; made car, rent, utility and/or mortgage payments—often for people where were close to losing their possessions—and other expenses to keep the focus on the people she helps get better. The Foundation has given dozens of area families throughout Blackstone Valley the assistance they needed— often without fanfare or hype. She wants to help out in her own way—because she knows what these families are going through—but said she does not need the spotlight to feel like she makes a difference. “My hope is making people feel a little better about themselves and giving them a smile during their time of stress,” she concluded. “Breast Cancer had no idea who they would be dealing with when I got diagnosed. It’s messing with the wrong woman!” More details about the event and contributing to the Elvira’s Gift For Hope Foundation can be obtained by contacting Elvira Protano at (401) 787-5638 or by email at: elvirasgiftforhope.15@gmail.com. Nantucket Bound® is a New England based company founded in 1997 by Chris Degnan. The company began producing a line of off-shore sport fishing tackle bags and boating accessories which continues to grow to this day. In 2010, Chris’ passion for all things coastal led the company into the home décor industry with a line of coastal-inspired pillows and home goods. Many of the products feature Sunbrella® fabrics which are known for their durability, color choices, and incredible quality. In addition they add their own unique artistry through colorful embroidery; capturing the coastal essence. Door draft stoppers, all purpose totes, and firewood carriers are among the company’s other products, all of which you can view and order on their website or shop in retail shops throughout New England. Sea Glass Boutique Rhode Island is known as The Ocean State, so it stands to reason talented artists would rise to the forefront to create jewelry out of sea glass from the coastal areas. Sea glass is broken pieces of glass washed up from the ocean. Many pieces of sea glass have been smoothed and polished by years of surf and sand before they ever hit the beach. They’re as beautiful as gemstones and look stunning when made into earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and more which is exactly Sea Glass Boutique does. In addition to Flori Nelon owning her own shop in the iconic seaside resort town, Newport, she operates an Etsy store called Sea Glass Boutique. There you’ll see beautiful pieces of sea glass jewelry, each ready to be shipped directly to you or the doorstep of your gift recipient. www.etsy.com/shop/seaglassboutique

The Tent

Having a dependable tent is always important when camping. Whether you are car-camping or hiking-in to a spot make sure you have a tent with a rainfly. You should also purchase a tent in preparation for the amount of people you will be with and choose a tent based on the season you plan to be camping during. The 3-season tent is most likely your best bet for purchase because it provides shelter from insects, can likely withstand rain and keep you dry and warm.

Sleeping Bag and Pad

The best buy for a great sleeping bag is always the zero degree bags. These bags are great for 3-season weather — or for the brave: snowy conditions. Nothing is worse than freezing all night when you are camping; even in the middle of summer you can catch a cold, rainy evening. Instead of lugging that old blow-up mattress around, try a light-weight sleeping pad that will keep you off the ground and comfortable. Sleeping pads are cost-effective and great for campers hiking-in to a spot as well because they are so light. You can manually blow them up and roll them up as you would a yoga mat.

Pack the Essentials

Regardless of where you are you are camping. Most likely you

26

will need at least one of these items. They are also essential when hiking or when your family is enjoying those great activities on the water. 1. Sunblock to protect against harmful rays. 2. Bug spray to protect against harmful insects. Also, always check yourself for ticks after every hike and thoroughly when you return home from camping. 3. Extra clothing for hiking, especially if you are hiking larger mountains. Never wear cotton on a mountain range, instead wear synthetics that will dry fast. Always bring your rain gear, maybe even a hat and gloves for foul weather. 4. Headlamp or flashlight when you are hiking, even if you anticipate to return to your campsite early, you can always get lost. 5. Waterproof matches in the event you do not have a lighter and it is raining. 6. Extra food and a ton of water! Hydration is key when camping. 7. Map and compass 8. Pack a knife or utility tool for unexpected projects. 9. Baby wipes are great for refreshing and cleaning anything — especially for children! 10. First-aid Kit Including: Band-Aids, alcohol wipes, blister block, tweezers, Benadryl, aspirin, gauze and sport tape for sprains.

Camping Tips Summer 2019

11. Always pack some rope and duct tape you never know when you will need to craft a laundry line or tape up a leak. 12. Don’t forget the toilet paper! Use an older Foldger’s coffee container to keep it dry.

The Fire

Be sure to follow camping guidelines when travelling out of state. Bringing wood that travels from one state to another is a big hazard to the natural environment because harmful bugs can travel making it even harder for environmental management to maintain their forests. Always pick up wood locally, where you are camping. To start a fire, fire starters are a great option or you can choose to make your own.

Lighting

The best lighting used for camping is truly a head lamp instead of a flashlight. These allow you to be mobile, hands-free in the event you are also doing something while you are moving around at night. Plus, they are really fun to use!

Entertainment

Bring the cards, a board game or embark on a photograph scavenger hunt. All of these are great for both children and adults keeping you and them entertained during downtime.

A Few Great Camping Hacks •

DIY fire starter: Fill dryer lint in a recycled toilet paper roll or egg carton. Coat with wax. Or soak cotton balls in alcohol or petroleum jelly, using a plastic bag for storage.

Natural repellant around the fire: Use dried sage or dried lavender to naturally repel bugs. Tie the herbs up and let them dry out. Bring them to your next fire and let them burn off to the side of your fire.

Use frozen water jugs to keep food cold in a cooler for longer, then you can drink the water as it melts. Make a portable candle out of an Altoid tin using wax and a wick. Put 1 part tea tree oil and 2 parts water in a spray bottle for natural tick repellent. If cooking with egg whites, pour them in a recycled water bottle for easier transportation. Wrap your food in foil and place it over the fire for easy, mess-free cooking.

Softw are For Your Business

by Bryan B Mason In this issue, I want to make some suggestions to help you select and implement a new software solution for your business.

Technology Plan

A technology plan is a document that describes the basic approach to using technology to support a company in meeting its business objectives. It includes a description of the processes, workflows and functions at the company that need to be supported by technology. The plan should include a description of the systems that need to be in place to provide this functionality and chart the information flow between systems that is required. It may also describe the architectural components and infrastructure needed to support the required systems. The development of a technology plan is most often a good place to start before commencing any major technology

projects. The plan will outline all of the work required so that it can be viewed at one time. A technology plan identifies the target end state and lays out the steps to get there. Having one minimizes the transition costs as work proceeds in a logical and deliberate process. It also minimizes misdirection as the end state is already defined. This way the business can set priorities and avoid implementing systems that in the long run will not fit in. Once you have a technology plan, you will have already identified what type of software you need first and you are ready to proceed.

Identify Goals and Requirements

The first step in identifying software is to make a list of business goals you want to achieve and articulate how those goals can be supported by the software you are going to be looking for. For example, if you are looking for a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, your goals may be to close more sales, increase the effectiveness of the

The development of a technology plan is most often a good place to start before commencing any major technology projects. sales force, improve the customer experience and streamline operations. The next step is to create a detailed list of specific functionality you want. Again, if you are looking for a CRM, you might list being able to enter contacts, companies, leads, opportunities and information on your interactions with these contacts and leads, etc. For each function you identify, describe the features you want, such as integration with email so you don’t have to add so much information manually. Finally, rate each feature as Mush Have, Want or Optional. This will be important in trading off software solutions that don’t have all the features you are looking for.

Research Solutions

When gathering information about specific software packages, look for the functionality and features you want. Think about your business workflow and try to visualize how

your workflow would work in the software you are looking at. Gather prices, ask about support, and discuss converting your data (from paper records or a prior system). Ask about set up including configuration, parameters, template set up, customizations, etc. Create a spreadsheet comparing each software package to your prioritized requirements and features.

How to Have a Successful Implementation

Successful implementations begin with planning. Identify the staff from your company that will be available to work on the implementation. Estimate time frames. Develop as complete a set of requirements of what you need as you can. Gather specifics for configuration and customizations. Determine how your data will get converted. Determine which staff will need to be trained. Mr. Mason founded the Apollo Consulting Group in 2008 to help small and mid-sized companies in solving their challenges.
