by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Kelly Anne White (mother) and Abigail Leigh White (daughter) have always been the best of friends, doing everything together. In 2018 they opened a franchise travel agency which was featured in an article in the 2019 November issue of Shop Local Rhody. Kelly and Abigail subsequently decided that they really wanted to specialize in helping mothers and daughters build their relationships through travel, while still supporting other travelers. Thus, they opened their own agency, Connecting Hearts Travel, by becoming an independent affiliate of Gifted Travel Network — a Virtuoso Member. Kelly and Abigail believe in modeling the way, so they travelled together on a combined business – educational road trip to the southwestern USA to inaugurate their business. Their trip planning began by exploring their goals and values, much the same way they are recommending that you plan your vacations. The trip started in Washington DC where Kelly represented all Rhode Island Travel Advisors at the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) Legislative Day in meetings with the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation. While meeting with the delegation they advocated for modifying government regulations to assist Travel Advisors rebound from the effects of COVID. As well as advocating for the American Traveler. This experience also afforded Kelly and Abigail the opportunity to discuss leadership and government while travelling to their next destination. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma ended up being the next destination. Originally, Kelly and Abigail intended to glance at the street art and murals which are powered by Google before heading to the Grand Canyon. They really enjoyed the city so much that they decided to be flexible and spent a few days viewing the city. Enroute to their next destination they discussed what makes modern art. Kelly and Abigail share an interest in music. Three musicals they both like have extensive references to Santa Fe. Thus, they wanted to see the architecture and landscape in Santa Fe while exploring the locales referred to in the musicals. They also enjoyed an amazing simultaneous sunset and moon rise on top of a mountain. They had plenty of time to sing together in the car as they headed towards their next destination. The turnaround point of their trip was Boulder, Colorado. Boulder was selected because of its proximity to Rocky Mountain Park for mother-daughter

hikes as well as visiting nearby Denver. They discussed nature’s beauty and the hiking experience while heading to their final stop. The final stop was St. Louis, Missouri selected because Kelly’s father shared his fascination with the city. Thus, they wanted to see it first hand and discuss their experiences with him upon returning home. In addition to seeing the beautiful country Abigail and Kelly had the opportunity to sing together in the car, discuss various cultures, religion, etc. prompted by everything they saw on their trip. Thus, their already strong relationship was further strengthened by the travel experience. Our mother – daughter team offers the following tips for great vacations:

The Tent

Having a dependable tent is always important when camping. Whether you are car-camping or hiking-in to a spot make sure you have a tent with a rainfly. You should also purchase a tent in preparation for the amount of people you will be with and choose a tent based on the season you plan to be camping during. The 3-season tent is most likely your best bet for purchase because it provides shelter from insects, can likely withstand rain and keep you dry and warm.

Sleeping Bag and Pad

The best buy for a great sleeping bag is always the zero degree bags. These bags are great for 3-season weather — or for the brave: snowy conditions. Nothing is worse than freezing all night when you are camping; even in the middle of summer you can catch a cold, rainy evening. Instead of lugging that old blow-up mattress around, try a light-weight sleeping pad that will keep you off the ground and comfortable. Sleeping pads are cost-effective and great for campers hiking-in to a spot as well because they are so light. You can manually blow them up and roll them up as you would a yoga mat.

Pack the Essentials

Regardless of where you are you are camping. Most likely you

will need at least one of these items. They are also essential when hiking or when your family is enjoying those great activities on the water. 1. 2.

Sunblock to protect against harmful rays. Bug spray to protect against harmful insects. Also, always check yourself for ticks after every hike and thoroughly when you return home from camping. 3. Extra clothing for hiking, especially if you are hiking larger mountains. Never wear cotton on a mountain range, instead wear synthetics that will dry fast. Always bring your rain gear, maybe even a hat and gloves for foul weather. 4. Headlamp or flashlight when you are hiking, even if you anticipate to return to your campsite early, you can always get lost. 5. Waterproof matches in the event you do not have a lighter and it is raining. 6. Extra food and a ton of water! Hydration is key when camping. 7. Map and compass 8. Pack a knife or utility tool for unexpected projects. 9. Baby wipes are great for refreshing and cleaning anything — especially for children! 10. First-aid Kit Including: Band-Aids, alcohol wipes, blister block, tweezers, Benadryl, aspirin, gauze and sport tape for sprains.

11. Always pack some rope and duct tape you never know when you will need to craft a laundry line or tape up a leak. 12. Don’t forget the toilet paper! Use an older Foldger’s coffee container to keep it dry.

The Fire

Be sure to follow camping guidelines when travelling out of state. Bringing wood that travels from one state to another is a big hazard to the natural environment because harmful bugs can travel making it even harder for environmental management to maintain their forests. Always pick up wood locally, where you are camping. To start a fire, fire starters are a great option or you can choose to make your own.

Lighting

The best lighting used for camping is truly a head lamp instead of a flashlight. These allow you to be mobile, hands-free in the event you are also doing something while you are moving around at night. Plus, they are really fun to use!

Entertainment

Bring the cards, a board game or embark on a photograph scavenger hunt. All of these are great for both children and adults keeping you and them entertained during downtime.

A Few Great Camping Hacks •

DIY fire starter: Fill dryer lint in a recycled toilet paper roll or egg carton. Coat with wax. Or soak cotton balls in alcohol or petroleum jelly, using a plastic bag for storage.

Natural repellant around the fire: Use dried sage or dried lavender to naturally repel bugs. Tie the herbs up and let them dry out. Bring them to your next fire and let them burn off to the side of your fire.

Use frozen water jugs to keep food cold in a cooler for longer, then you can drink the water as it melts. Make a portable candle out of an Altoid tin using wax and a wick. Put 1 part tea tree oil and 2 parts water in a spray bottle for natural tick repellent. If cooking with egg whites, pour them in a recycled water bottle for easier transportation. Wrap your food in foil and place it over the fire for easy, mess-free cooking.

Summer Time Recipes Warm weather calls for no-fuss meals that are full of flavor. Whether you’re cooking with seasonal produce from the local farmers market or planning to fire up the grill for an al fresco family dinner, these recipes are sure to make mealtime easier.

Appetizer:

Arugula, Watermelon & Feta Salad Yields: 4 servings

Ingredients: - 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice - 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice - 1/4 cup minced shallots - 1 tbs honey - 1/2 cup good olive oil - 1 tsp kosher salt - 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

- 6 cups baby arugula, washed and spun dry - 1/8 seedless watermelon, rind removed, and cut in 1-in cubes - 12 oz good feta cheese, 1/2-in diced - 1 cup whole fresh mint leaves, julienned

Cooking Instructions: 1. Whisk together the orange juice, lemon juice, shallots, honey, salt, and pepper. Slowly pour in the olive oil, whisking constantly, to form an emulsion. If not using within an hour, store the vinaigrette covered in the refrigerator.

2. Place the arugula, watermelon, feta, and mint in a large bowl. Drizzle with enough vinaigrette to coat the greens lightly and toss well. Taste for seasonings and serve immediately.

- 12 lemons, halved

1. Fill a large steamer or pot with about 2 inches of water. Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the water, then add the lemon halves and 1 tablespoon sea salt to the pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

- Sea salt - 3 11/4-to-11/2-pound live lobsters - 1/3 cup mayonnaise - 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted - 6 top-split hot dog buns - 1/4 cup roughly chopped celery leaves - 1/4 teaspoon celery salt

2. Place the lobsters in the steamer basket or directly in the pot; cover and steam until the shells turn bright red, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the pot with tongs and rinse under cold water to cool slightly. 3. Remove the meat from the lobster shells: Twist off the claws, then break off the tail. Pull off the flippers. Insert your thumb into the flipper end of the tail and force out the meat. Crack the claws with the flat side of a knife or a lobster cracker; remove the meat. Roughly chop the lobster meat. Transfer to a bowl and chill 15 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, whisk the mayonnaise, 4 tablespoons melted butter and the juice of the remaining lemon in a large bowl. Add the lobster meat and toss to coat. Season with salt.

Grilled Peaches with Cinnamon Sugar Butter Total Time: 15 minutes | Yields: 4 servings

Ingredients: - 1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature - 1 tsp cinnamon sugar - 2 tbs granulated sugar

- Pinch salt - 4 ripe peaches, halved and pitted - Canola oil - Mint leaves, for garnish

Directions: 1. In a small bowl add the butter and stir until smooth. Add the cinnamon sugar, granulated sugar and salt and mix until combined. 2. Heat grill to high. Rocky Point 1 R o c k y P o i n t Av e n u e , W ar w i c k , R h o d e I s l an d Rocky Point State Park has been a beloved public attraction in Rhode Island since the mid-1800s. The property has been a location for many attractions including a clam shack, hotel, concerts, and most notably as The Rocky Point Amusement Park. The park operated from the late 1840s until its closing in 1994. During the 1950s to the 1990s, Rocky Point Amusement Park was a popular tourist destination in Rhode Island.

In the 1990s Rocky Point’s financial situation became unstable. This, unfortunately, led the park to close in 1994. However, in 1996, Rocky Point opened its doors one last time to say farewell to its loyal patrons. Although the amusement park is gone, Rocky Point still lives on in the memories and hearts of Rhode Island residents, through movies, books, social media and much more!

The park featured rides including the Log Flume, Corkscrew Loop Roller Coaster, Skyliner, and The Freefall, which would fall 13 stories at 55 miles per hour! The Shore Dinner Hall, which closed in 2000, was famous for its clam cakes, lobster, manhattan style clam chowder, and steamers. In addition to amusement rides, Rocky Point hosted concerts! Performances included Janis Joplin, AC/DC, Jane’s Addiction, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and much more!

In 2003, Rocky Point was purchased, and demolition began shortly after. 8 years later, it became a state park. When visiting, you can find the upper and lower stations for the Skyliner gondola ride, ruins of an old water tank, and an arch by the entrance. The amusement park may be gone, but its skeletons still remain. Rocky Point State Park is a great place to go on your next family walk, bike ride, or even to watch the beautiful sunrise! There is plenty of parking, and plenty of space to enjoy some quality time with your family and loved ones. There are even some special events in the park, such as movie nights, where a large screen and projector are brought in. These events are free and they are always fun for the whole family. In the 40’s and 50’s the company started to take off and became the most successful meat business in the region. In the 70’s, their youngest son Vlado Dukcevich joined the company and had very big dreams from his family’s business. He moved the family to Rhode Island and started up an Italian specialty meat business. At first Italian meats were a hard sell for Americans since they never heard of them before, but as the years went on and with grandsons Davide and Stefano Duhcevich joining the company, the business flourished. Now they sell specialty meats such as Prosciutto, Mortadella, Salame, and Pancetta to some of the finest delis and supermarkets throughout the country and even outsource to countries in Asia and Latin America.
