Whalers The story of

Brewing Company

Something’s Brewing | BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

For us, we’ve seen such a huge support from the community, people wanting to drink local products, wanting to buy local products... it’s a really cool community to be a part of Whalers Brewing Company in South Kingstown has the sense of calm and permanence that generally accompanies a long-time establishment. The relaxed friendship between beer enthusiasts Josh Dunlap and Wes Staschke makes it easy to believe that the two are old friends collaborating on this business venture. Somehow, though, neither of these impressions are accurate; Whalers is only a few years old, and Dunlap and Staschke had only known each other for a short time before they began working together. Josh Dunlap started brewing beer in 2008, a hobby developed from watching his friends dabble in it when he was stateside from his deployment with the Marine Corps. When he returned home, he began working on a fishing boat out of Point Judith, the James and Matthew, where he started to brew on his own. Hobby became profession, and when it came time to make things more official and name the venture, “Whalers” paid homage to Josh’s nautical background and time on the water. Wes Staschke had his own brewery, Stone and Steel, in West Warwick before merging his company and equipment with Josh sometime around 2013. He explains that the culture in West Warwick wasn’t as receptive to the idea of a brewery as the South County area. This resistance prompted him to reach out to Josh, and he asked to join him at Whalers. Now, Josh and Wes work together to grow and develop the ever-changing selection of beers on tap (Wes focuses on developing sour ales, Josh specializes in high-gravity, high-ABV beers) and building the brand that is Whalers. The brand is showcased in what they call the tasting room, a space that is actually their third location, and which can comfortably hold between 200-300 people. Inside, native Rhode Islanders and URI students alike can

be found tossing around cornhole bean bags, attempting giant Jenga, and playing pool. People appreciate the laidback atmosphere, the fact that families are welcome until 6 (after that it’s 21+), that you can bring dogs and your own food, and that they close at 10pm to distinguish themselves from the normal bar scene, and focus on the beer tasting experience. Outside of the tasting room, Whalers beers can be found in about 350 restaurants in Rhode Island, and will soon break into Massachusetts as well. At the end of 2015, an investor joined, and the production grew out of what the tasting room alone could handle. When asked if they ever thought their brand would take off like this, the two are both quick to shake their heads, and Josh speaks first, “(We) strive to brew great beer and sell it locally… I never thought it would get this big, personally.” The team is now expanding the actual brewing process into the building next door. “It’s really cool to see it evolve to statewide, and multistate-wide by the end of the year,” Wes explains. “For us, we’ve seen such a huge support from the community, people wanting to drink local products, wanting to buy local products… it’s a really cool community to be a part of,” their marketing director Emily Sorlien explains. Their community involvement even goes beyond the taproom: Whalers has sponsored the Blessing of the Fleet in Narragansett, as well as PVD Fest in Providence this past summer. Their greatest accomplishment so far? Their American Pale Ale, Rise, won “Best Pale Ale” in the United States at the 2017 World Beer Awards. It’s their best seller and what they recommend to first-time Whalers visitors. Parting words to those who have yet to experience Whalers? “If you’ve never visited the taproom, you’re doing it wrong,” the guys laugh.

Lang’s Bo by Ellis Einhorn

For many Rhode Island residents, Lang’s Bowlarama is not just an entertainment venue, it’s a piece of local history. This family business has undergone major changes over the past several decades in order to continue bringing joy to Rhode Islanders young and old. The building, located at 225 Niantic Ave in Cranston has been in operation since 1960 and is currently run by third generation owners, Rich and Dave Lang. The two took over in 2012 and have implemented many updates, including the recently renovated Nelson Event Center. The longstanding Lang’s Bowlarama has seen a major overhaul in its facilities as the new ownership strives to transform the 60-year-old venue into a premium entertainment destination. With a new rental facility for any size and type of event, this deluxe space holds up to 125 people and is equipped with a new bar, kitchen, outside entrance, and lounge area.

“The owners have made some major improvements to make it a better place to visit for all guests,” said Kayla Girard, Lang’s Sales and Events Manager. “Not only do we have the Nelson Event Center, we’re a huge supporter of the community and love to give back.” The once traditional bowling center has seen a tremendous resurgence of interest from eager Rhode Islanders to relive their childhood memories or help their kids make their own. Girard attributes this success to the management’s goal of creating an enjoyable, upscale environment not only to visit but to work at. “It’s not just pub style food that people think of when they think of a typical bowling center. We can cook up anything from chicken wings to prime rib dinners,” Girard said. “The staff here isn’t just in it to get paid, we actually enjoy our charity events and helping people put on their fundraisers. We like to give back just as much as we like to be a business and make money for ourselves.” Last year, Lang’s held multiple charity events to benefit the

9 1 0 2 E H T G IN REVIEW by Mike Casale

It still amazes me how far we have come in the automotive industry in the past 20 years. If you had told me when I was a kid, growing up in the 80’s, that the two most popular styles of vehicle would be SUV’s and Pickup Trucks, and almost every home in America would have at least one in their driveway, I would have thought it was crazy. But it is not crazy anymore, it is reality. When the idea was fully conceived in the mid 1990’s that SUV’s were the wave of the future, automakers from around the world had to re-tool their mindset to accommodate the concept of less cars. For most of us, SUV’s just make more sense than cars. Why sacrifice space and practicality? How nice is it to have allwheel drive as a standard option? And as for our concerns of past SUV’s, drive comfort and fuel-efficiency are no longer major reasons to re-consider purchasing an SUV. Most of today’s SUV’s ride on unibody platforms. Unlike truck-based body-on-frame builds, these modern platforms are mostly car like in their design, providing you with similar ride comfort to the sedan and station wagons that you always enjoyed. And with modern high powered 4 cylinder options, sacrificing gas mileage is no longer a requirement. When Toyota first introduced the RAV4 in 1996, we were able to see a different kind of SUV. The unibody, compact car like structure was revolutionary. It told us that we can have the best of convenience and practicality, but in a small package.

18

BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Through 5 generations now, the RAV4 has grown, and in the process, has become a favorite amongst families looking for a smaller, more practical solution. For 2019, the RAV4 is completely redesigned. It now shares its platform with such larger models as the Camry and the Avalon. Perhaps the biggest difference from the increased size this year, is the new available torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system complete with a multi terrain knob featuring mud/ sand and rocks/dirt settings. This provides buyers with a greater off-road touch, while still maintaining its compact crossover appeal. Mechanically, this vehicle is similar to the previous generation model. Power is still made through a standard 2.5 liter inline-4, now paired with an 8-speed Direct Shift Automatic, which increases horsepower by up to 15% on gasoline models (non-hybrid). A 7-inch multi-touch screen is available and Entune 3.0 is available with Apple Carplay,

Amazon Alexa, JBL Audio System and a WIFI Hotspot. The new RAV4 also has QI Wireless Charging, as well as Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. I currently own a 2018 Tacoma, and I have to tell you, the wireless charging and safety features are more useful than I could have ever imagined. After reading more about the new RAV4, I was able to make a stop down to my local Toyota dealer of choice, Tarbox Toyota, to take a 2019 RAV4 Adventure for a test drive. Between my wife and I, we have owned two Highlanders, a RAV4, a Camry, and now a Tacoma. Tarbox has been there every step of the way, through my excellent purchase experiences, all the way through their reliable and convenient service options. I chose to test drive the new Adventure model, not only for the multi terrain AWD options, but for the more rugged and sporty looks that it provided.

After about 20 miles of driving, I was fully convinced. This model feels like the best of both worlds. Not only do you get a rugged, off-road SUV appeal, but you don’t have to sacrifice the car like handling aspect either. To sum it up, this crossover drives and handles like a car, but appeals to the buyer looking for much more of an edge. With such stiff competition in the industry, and so many automakers now producing strong options, I feel as though Toyota really stepped up their game. The interior detail felt more like a luxury sedan than a typical SUV. Ride height felt good, and interior room felt comparable to that of my Tacoma, which is a midsize truck. Power and acceleration were definitely improved, as well as responsiveness from the new 8-speed transmission. I could barely even feel the vehicle shift, and power was delivered strongly at all speeds. Toyota knew they had a chance to really take a leap forward with this RAV4, and they did just that! When looking for a new RAV4, I would highly recommend visiting Tarbox Toyota. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they still believe in the personal touch. Personally, I have gotten to know much of the staff at Tarbox, from the Service team all the way to their General Manager Ray Clements. At Tarbox, they take the time to know their customers, and fit their needs to the best possible vehicle. This new 2019 RAV4 might be sportiest crossover I have seen in some time, and with a wide variety of packages and inventory options at Tarbox Toyota, finding your right RAV4 will be made simple. For more information, feel free to stop in to Tarbox Toyota today, and take one for test drive. BUYaLOCAL, SHOP LOCAL 19

TWISTED PIZZERIA AND RESTAURANT

A New Twist To Your Dining Experience by Jessica Krawiec

In the Ocean State we have many dining experiences available, however on the local level, some restaurants tend to be over looked — Twisted Pizza should not be one of those. I recently visited one of the restaurants in Rhode Island that has been catching some buzz - Twisted Pizza in Coventry. The restaurant had plenty of outdoor seating and comfy booths accompanied with a fully stocked bar inside. I’ve been there twice before, each time visiting, the staff was very welcoming and friendly. This time in particular, I was able to sample a few of their dishes and new drink options. Lucky enough, I was able to try theirapple house made sangria with a cinnamon sugar rim — just one of the few sangria flavors they have at Twisted. These popular, fruity and refreshing based cocktails are crafted in house and developed with a variation of seasonal twists such fruits, fresh herbs and the ultimate wine pairing. Twisted is well known for preparing delicious family style meals with a twist; there’s options for everyone. Their menu can satisfy any customer — weather it may be vegetarian, gluten free options, or comfort food. In this case, I got to experience a true Rhode Island dish, the fish tacos. Three flour tortillas with fresh beer battered haddock which was moist and flavorful, topped with our fresh house made slaw and signature boom boom sauce - delicious! Besides the food, Twisted Pizza is family owned has been in business for over 50 years, ultimately leading to the expansion to six different locations in Rhode Island and eager to expand. With it’s roots grounded in Rhode Island, community involvement is essential to this restaurant. Whether it be sponsoring youth teams or providing pizza for schools and local churches — Twisted is always looking for ways to get involved locally. In addition, ordering is as easy as eating pizza! For your convenience, Twisted offers dine in, pick up and delivery services at all six Rhode Island locations. With the online app you can order your favorite food online! While many people ultimately fail to keep those resolutions intact, one Cranston-based company not only wants people to succeed, but they also have ways of ensuring healthier minds and bodies. Co-Owners David Piatek and Johnna Pitochelli of The Nutrition Station, located on 935 Park Ave., have numerous healthy shakes and teas that are designed to help people feel better without feeling hungry. Since their doors opened on July 8, 2017, they have witnessed increased growth, according to Piatek. They are happy with their current numbers—seeing between 75-100 customers daily—but are encouraged by its potential growth. “We are a relationship-based company,” Piatek said, who has been involved with health and wellness for several years. “We

don’t want to become some place where we pass out 300 shakes and have no connection with the customers. Our 2019 goal would be to serve between 150 and 175 people daily. We take the time to get to know our clients and that goes a long way toward them returning.” Their shakes and teas can aid individuals looking for a new start, groups looking for an alternative to what they have tried and other groups who are interested in trying something new. For local sports teams looking to gain a competitive edge, their sports nutrition line of products never use any substances that are banned by sports governing bodies at the local, state, regional, national and international levels. Piatek said the business will be undergoing an internal facelift. They are redoing the bar area, their current menu, which is now posted on a chalkboard, will have a new look with magnetic signs for all of the flavors they serve, and offering other amenities that will be announced soon, according to Piatek.

We take the time to get to know our clients and that goes a long way toward them returning Another benefit Piatek and Pitochelli are unveiling: callahead ordering. Piatek said he received feedback from area companies looking for ways to get their drinks on the go. Piatek noted that it could bring in new business by creating a new option to coming into the store. “As lunch time only lasts 30 minutes in most cases, it’s important for people to not only have something, but consume something healthy,” he said. Piatek pointed out the numerous drinks they offer. The Station’s “Drinkologists” can concoct specialty drinks on request. He said power teas and healthy energy drinks are among The Nutrition Station’s biggest sellers. Athletes and those who are active love the fact there are no additives, sugars or other bad ingredients that other well-known energy drinks have, he added. “Our biggest selling point is that we make all of our drinks the same way,” he said. “We are big on consistency so customers do not have to ask for a certain person to make their drinks. We are unlike anyplace else in that regard. We hear comments from people all the time about how drinks at other places can be really good one visit and bland the next time. Their drinks can vary in taste and in the personnel (making them).” Once springtime comes, Piatek and Pitochelli plan to add monthly health and wellness-related classes, fitness camps, community-based programs and weight-loss challenges. They are also planning to hire additional staff to keep up with increasing demand. When they opened in 2017, the store employed four people. The Nutrition Station has since doubled their staff to eight with hopes of adding at least two more people. Piatek noted they had to keep at least two people behind the counter because it can get really busy for just one person to handle the orders. “We are looking for people who are either looking to make a little extra money doing something part-time or potentially as a full-time endeavor,” Piatek said. “We are looking for those interested in helping others, are willing to learn and are outgoing, friendly and proactive. This would be a great opportunity for either students, health enthusiasts or anyone looking to start fresh.” The Nutrition Station is open weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays. Piatek said they hope to have Sunday morning hours soon. They are available on several social media channels, including Instagram and Facebook, where they post special deals and contests. They are also accepting reviews on Google and Yelp. Customers Part Two by Bryan B Mason

In last month’s article, I discussed how to develop solid and effective business and marketing strategies and their importance. This month, I will discuss how to identify appropriate marketing channels and how to develop a marketing plan.

Identifying Appropriate Marketing Channels

To be successful at getting more customers, you will need to identify which marketing channels will work for your company. Start by making a list of the approaches or channels you can think of that might help you get more customers. Examples are blogs, email marketing, search engine optimization, etc. Then for each channel, you need to brainstorm and come up with at least one idea on how you would use that channel. If you need some ideas, call me at the number below and I will send you a white paper discussing 19 different marketing channels, what they are, how you can use them, and in what situations they are likely to work.

Next, go through and select what you think are the three best ideas (channels). Devise a cheap, easy and fast way to test to see if this will work for each idea. You need at least 3 ideas to test because you don’t want to take too long to determine the best channel for you. If you do one at a time, you greatly increase the time it takes to get to the most effective channel. You want to be able to answer the following three questions for each idea at the end of the tests: 1. What is the cost to get a single customer using the channel? 2. How many customers are in this channel? 3. Are the customers you can get in this channel the kind of customers you want? Remember, the test itself will not likely get the volume of business you need but you want the test to validate the approach. If all of the channels worked, take those and proceed to develop a Marketing Plan. If some or all of them did not work out, take the lessons learned from the effort and select

After a while however, your growth will likely level off. This is because your company is much larger now, and you have diminishing returns on the channels you used.

is to identify the events that trigger a prospective customer to need or consider a product or service. The second step is to identify where a potential customer will reach out for information or recommendations about the item they are considering (e.g. internet search, recommenders such as a doctor, relative or celebrity, social media, friends, etc.). The third step is to identify how to provide the information needed and how to influence the recommenders. The actions need to be put into priority order (potential impact, cost, ease, timeframes for effectiveness, etc.) and then elaborated into detailed actions and marketing channels to be used, the sequencing, and the people/resources needed with their assigned responsibilities. Finally you need to identify the metrics of success for each action so you can tell if that action is working.

more channels to evaluate and run more tests, etc. Keep in mind that once you have identified the best channels to use and put them into practice this will take your company to the next level. After a while however, your growth will likely level off. This is because your company is much larger now, and you have diminishing returns on the channels you used. You will need to start again to identify the next most promising channel, and so on.

Developing a Marketing Plan

A Marketing Plan is where you identify what specific actions you are going to take to get more customers. Specifically, who is going to do what, when and how. As a consultant, I usually prepare a marketing plan in three steps. The first
