How did you get started in the Real Estate business?

Can you tell us a little about your agents?

I was introduced into this business at such a young age. My parents owned a Real Estate office when I was 8 years old, therefore I grew up in the business. When I used to leave Jr High School, I went directly to the office to learn everything I could.

I have such a great team of agents that assist me with my business. I have trained them to have full transparency with our clients and be the best representation of our office that they can be. First and foremost I like for my agents to create a relationship with the client and get to know them. We have standards in place to ensure calls are on time, the transaction is on track and the client is not waiting for an update. That is what makes a strong relationship between a good agent and their clients. I want all of our clients to have the same experience, and want to refer us to their friends and family.

How long have you been in Real Estate? I have been in the Real Estate industry for 18 years. I started with just residential sales, and then quickly fell in love with short sales, foreclosures and flipping properties.

What is the best thing about being in business for so long? Thankfully the majority of my business is repeat business from past clients. It’s an amazing feeling when my past client’s children reach out to me for their Real Estate needs. It makes me know I had left an amazing impression on my client.

Do you keep in touch with your past clients and if so, how do you do it? I always keep in touch with my clients. They are the backbone of my business, and most of them I consider part of my family. I love to send out cards, gifts and newsletters to my clients. What I love the most is the client appreciation parties. Sadly due to Covid we have not had many, but I have some fun ideas up my sleeve for the near future.

by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Aaron Usher is a commercial photographer specializing in architectural and interiors photography. His typical clients include architects, interior designers, general contractors and restauranteurs. One of his clients, architect David Andreozzi of Barrington was identified as one of the top 50 traditional architects in the world by the Institute of Traditional Architecture for “consistently producing designs that are beautiful, practical, and respectful of their settings.” Aaron is especially proud that his photos are an integral part of the portfolio David submitted for this as well as numerous other awards. Some of these photos accompany this article. Aaron is a lifelong Rhode Islander, currently residing in Pawtucket, who traces his roots back to ancestors who arrived in America on the Mayflower. Aaron and his wife, Lynn, met in sixth grade (though Aaron thinks that the two of them were actually in the same hospital nursery as they were born just days apart). Lynn is an art teacher, who also does editing and lots of other behind the scenes work to support Aaron’s business. While Aaron and Lynn have always lived in Rhode Island, they have visited 49 of the 50 states and many countries. They hope to visit Hawaii in a few years. Kaitlyn, his older daughter, is a fashion designer in New York City. Cali, his younger daughter, is an aerospace engineer in Denver. Aaron shared these ideas to make beautiful photographs: • Use a camera, not a phone, for higher quality images and photos where you want to show more detail. Phone cameras are advantageous because they are always with you and they tend to be perfect for recording life’s little moments. They are perfect for documenting a point in time. • Move close to your subject when making photos. There is an old photography joke about the difference between a professional photographer and an amateur. The answer is about 10 feet. The pro will move closer to delineate their main subject, while an amateur photo includes everything that happens to be

in the frame from where the camera happens to be positioned. A professional will move close to their subject and frame the photo to include what they want to feature. Be aware of and control the “negative space,” in your photos. Everything within the frame should be considered. By moving yourself, your subject or controlling the depth of field setting on your camera, you can keep the emphasis on your reason for making the photo. Try settings such as F 4 or F 5.6. You do not want to have a tree appear to be growing out of someone’s head! Use a tripod rather than hand holding your camera whenever possible. Set up the camera then view all elements of the photo, move the camera, your subject or objects in the photo to achieve the look that you want. Create an image rather than merely documenting an event. Consider converting your photo to black and white to emphasis shapes and forms. Clouds and snow scenes can be quite dramatic in b/w.

St. Patrick’s Day Recipes St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. Whether you are Irish or not, these dishes will have you feeling like you are! Here are some traditional delicious recipes that will make you want to “Kiss the Irish” for their scrumptious, hearty dishes.

Appetizer:

Irish Oxtail Soup Total Time: 30 minutes | Yields: 4

Ingredients: - 2 1/2 pounds of oxtails (beef or veal)

- 1 large onion (sliced) - 2 medium carrots (cut into 1-inch pieces) - 2 stalks of celery (cut into 1-inch pieces) - 2 tablespoons fresh flat parsley (minced)

- 1 bay leaf - 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns - 4 cups beef stock - 1 cup dark beer (a stout works very well) - 2 cups Russet potatoes (diced) - 1 teaspoon Kosher salt - 2 tablespoons fresh flat parsley (chopped)

Cooking Instructions: 1. In a large saucepan, combine the oxtails, onion, half of the carrots, one third of the celery, the parsley sprigs, broth and beer.

Make the Meat Filling.

- 2 tbsp. olive oil - 1 cup chopped yellow onion - 1 lb. 90% lean ground beef -or ground lamb - 2 tsp. dried parsley leaves - 1 tsp. dried rosemary leaves - 1 tsp. dried thyme leaves - 1/2 tsp. salt - 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper - 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce - 2 garlic cloves -minced - 2 tbsp. all purpose flour - 2 tbsp. tomato paste - 1 cup beef broth - 1 cup frozen mixed peas & carrots*

1. Add oil to a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat. Add the onions. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Add the ground beef (or ground lamb) to the skillet and break it apart. Add the parsley, rosemary, thyme, salt, and and pepper. Stir well. Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the meat is browned, stirring occasionally. 3. Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Stir to combine. Cook for 1 minute. 4. Add the flour and tomato paste. Stir until well incorporated and no clumps of tomato paste remain. 5. Add the broth, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen corn. Bring to a boil then reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes.

- 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels Potato Topping: 1 1/2 - 2 lb. russet potatoes - cut into 1 inch cubes - 8 tbsp. unsalted butter -1 stick - 1/3 cup half & half - 1/2 tsp. garlic powder - 1/2 tsp. salt - 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper - 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

2. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat to low. 3. Simmer for 3 hours, or until the meat is falling off the bones. 4. Remove the oxtails setting them aside on a plate. 5. Strain the broth and return it to the saucepan, and skim fat. 6. Add the remaining carrots and celery, and the potatoes. 7. Simmer for 10 or 15 minutes, or until the veggies are tender. 8. Returning the oxtails, remove the meat from the bones. 9. Discard the bones (or give ‘em to the dogs), and add the meat and salt to the saucepan. 10. Cook until heated through, and remove from the heat. 11. If you wish, add the chopped parsley.

6. Set the meat mixture aside. Preheat oven to 400°F. Make the potato topping. 1. Boil potatoes in a large pot with water. Cook until potatoes are fork tender, 10-15 minutes.

2. Drain the potatoes and return the potatoes to the pot. 3. Add butter, half & half, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes and stir until all the ingredients are mixed together. 4. Add the parmesan cheese to the potatoes. Stir until well combined.

Guinness Milkshake

Assemble the casserole.

- 3 1/2 cups chocolate ice cream

- 2 curls bittersweet chocolate

1. Pour the meat mixture into a 9x9 (or 7x11) inch baking dish. Spread it out into an even layer. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the meat. Carefully spread into an even layer. 2. If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet so that the filling doesn’t bubble over into your oven. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.

- 1 (14.9 ounce) can stout beer (recommended: Guinness)

- 2 store-bought praline cookies

Total Time: 5 minutes | Serves: 2

The Towers

3 5 O c e an R oad , Nar r ag an s e t t , R h o d e I s l an d The Towers is a historic structure located in Narragansett, Rhode Island. It is the only remnant of the Narragansett Pier Casino built in the 1880s. This casino was the center of social life in Narragansett during the late 19th century. The Casino rivaled the Newport Casino’s popularity as a resort for the social elite until it burned down in 1900. The Narragansett Casino was a great example of Victorian Shingle style architecture, designed by McKim, Mead, and White. The Casino offered a variety of sports, including boating, tennis, billiards, bowling, cards, and shooting,

restaurants, stores, reading rooms a theatre, a bandstand, a ballroom, and of course a beautiful beach. The Casino burned down during the Great Fire of September 12, 1900. That horrible day, a fire broke out in the neighboring Rockingham Hotel. The flames spread quickly to the Casino, leaving only the granite walls of The Towers standing. More recently, Hurricane Sandy has uncovered the foundation and part of the old boardwalk belonging to the old casino that had been buried by sand. Today, these famous Towers have survived numerous fires, nor’easters and hurricanes, yet they still remain standing.They symbolize an almost magical reputation for indestructibility, Narragansett’s good luck symbol. The Towers currently host weddings, dances, dinners, plays, and fashion showers. It is an incredible venue for any social event! After 40 years as a nail technician, Anita Barbera took a leap into entrepreneurship and opening her own salon. Though her timing, perhaps, couldn’t have been worse, she’s risen to the challenge in style. Barbera purchased a building in Cranston and opened the doors to Kismet Salon just one day before all salons were ordered to close in the Covid-19 pandemic. Undeterred, Barbera used that time wisely to strengthen her business plan for long-term growth and remodel the building with her husband. Today, she has reopened under new guidelines and is seeing a steady stream of clients. She employs a small group of hair stylists with plans for expanding her team in the future. Barbera connected with central region director Amit Basnet when she sought support from the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center to finance the property. Basnet assisted her with understanding the loan process and preparing her loan package. Barbera eventually settled on using private funds and a commercial mortgage to purchase the property for her beauty salon. She is now

working with RISBDC on marketing, including using social media to spread the word about her nail and hair services. “I love owning a business,” Barbera says proudly. “It feels great. I am very fortunate. Myself and the other stylists are like a little family and care about one another,” said Barbera.
