Each of the festival’s six days begins at 5 pm outdoors on the Sunshine Stage. Four sets of music performed by solo artists and small acoustic ensembles provide the perfect ending to a day at the beach for visitors and locals alike. As the barbeque sizzles and the blender churns out frozen drinks, the audience slips easily into the mellow island atmosphere where flip-flops and bikini tops constitute proper attire. As the sun sets on Block Island, the festival moves indoors to the Main Stage where four more bands perform through 1 am. By week’s end, the Block Island Music Festival has played host to 48 diverse musical acts. Visit www.visitrhodeisland.com/events for more info. BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

We all have a lot less hair and we don’t wear spandex anymore, but we’re keeping the energy going doing what we love. For these professional musicians, the rock band circuit has come full circle….literally. The four members of the band “Full Circle” were playing music back in the pre-internet heyday of the 80s and 90s, when big crowds were the norm at local rock clubs Wednesday through Saturday nights, and musicians could make a living playing cover songs to adoring fans. “We’re seeing people our age coming back out to the clubs, now that their children are all grown up and they’re finding themselves empty nesters,” states Gary Ross, band founder and lead guitarist. “It’s not the same scene as it was in the 1980s but the vibe is still alive. We all have a lot less hair and we don’t wear spandex anymore, but we’re keeping the energy going doing what we love.” Full Circle is a hard-working rock cover band that’s been performing in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut since 1993. The four-member band of talented musicians, backed by a professional sound and light system, performs a variety of dance-able rock sets ranging from Adele and Alice in Chains to The Who and Led Zeppelin. The band is known for its versatility in playing virtually any genre of rock and “sounding just like the record.” Full Circle, which started out as a guitar duo act, used to play out every weekend on both Friday and Saturday nights, with a regular gig on a weeknight also. In 2007, Gary decided to expand it into a four-piece act adding drums and another singer. That year, lead singer and keyboardist Betty Galligan joined the band, bringing outstanding vocal talent, piano skills and 18 years of experience from being in her brother’s rock band. Over the years, band members have come and gone, but Gary and Betty are the mainstays with drummer/vocalist Mick Coste who joined in 2010 after a year’s worth of “fill in” drummers, and recently added bassist Dave Plante who has been with the band for the past four months. “It’s extraordinary to be able to play together all these years with talented musicians who are also your friends,” Betty notes. “We’re like siblings who all get along, have a great time, and play beautiful music together. The audience can tell if you’re not feeling it. We feel blessed to be able to do this every weekend.”
Everyone in the band has a demanding day job, and all have spouses who are supportive of their hobby. “If it weren’t for music, we’d go crazy,” Gary comments. “We look forward to doing this on the weekends to relieve stress from the week.” With thousands of gigs collectively under their belts, the band mates have seen a lot of change in the rock cover band circuit. Many places they’ve played in the past are no longer in business. The club owners today, however, are keeping the band circuit alive and Full Circle is so grateful for their support of live music. “The biggest change for me was when smoking was outlawed in bars and clubs – if it weren’t for that, I’d not be playing because the smoke negatively impacted my singing voice and health,” recalls Betty. “But maybe I’d be sounding a lot more like Janis Joplin! We’d see people put their coats on and leave during a gig and thought it was because they didn’t like what we were playing, but they are only going outside to have a cigarette.” People are generally busier nowadays with a lot more options for entertainment including staying home on their couch with Netflix. How does Full Circle compete? “In the old days, you had to go out for fun and socialization in order to meet people,” Betty adds. “In recent years, we have played gigs where you look out into the young crowd and see faces lit up with blue light because they’re looking down at their phones texting their friends standing right next to them. We’d play a bunch of songs from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm to hardly anyone because everyone would just be getting to the bar at midnight! There was also an era when kararoke was way more popular than live music. We’ve had to keep up with the times, learning new popular non-rock songs along the way like Poker Face and Katy Perry tunes to throw into the mix.” Full Circle continues to rock night clubs, restaurants and bars on the local scene including Escada Bar, Lou’s Café, Renegades, Twisted Hop, Broadway Lounge, and The Narragansett Cafe. Gary and Betty have a duo act called “Betty and G” which performs at Quinn’s Irish Pub and the Harmony Café. You can follow them on Facebook to catch their busy schedule. “We plan to play until we get really old and can’t do it any longer,” jokes Gary. “Rock and roll keeps us alive – just look at Keith Richards.”

Clean T U M B L E T O W N 2 L A U N D R O M AT Article by Andrew Pavia
With over a decade of experience keeping customers satisfied, John Chmura opened Tumbletown 2 laundromat with the goal of making things easier for his customers. “We noticed that a lot of customers had to come to us,” he said speaking of his first location. “But we wanted to make the experience more convenient for our customers.” In addition to Chmura’s decision to open another brick and mortar laundromat to meet the needs of the community, he noticed another need that he wanted to meet ... childcare. “We find that if we put a kids section in the laundromat kids find their own way there,” he said. The “Kid Zone” is an area with televisions, a pinball machine, crayons, toys and games designed to allow parents and guardians the ability to do laundry without having to simultaneously entertain children. “A lot of other laundromats don’t have a kids section.” Even with a kids section in mind, Chmura made sure that his adult customers wouldn’t feel left out either. With free wifi, charging stations and multiple televisions, customers will also not want for entertainment as they complete the chore of washing, drying and folding laundry. In addition to being entertained, customers can rely on the 100 pound washers, laundry soap vending machine and clean space to provide a comfortable atmosphere to do their laundry. Don’t think that the staff at Tumbletown 2 forgot about those who don’t have the time to do laundry themselves. With wash, dry and fold services that include pickup and delivery, the business caters to customers who don’t have time to sit and wait. “We accept cash, credit and EBT cards,” Chmura said. He went on to discuss a brand new rewards system that is being implement soon. These promotions would be a monthly occurrence with a different reward being highlighted each month. For instance, one promotion Chmura mentioned was giving one free cycle on a washing machine of any size after a customer completes 10 washes at regular price. When discussing helping the community and ensuring that Tumbletown 2 remains a good neighbor he said, “I just want the reputation of the store to be strong. I want people to be happy as they come through the door.” BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Dave’s Coffee Syrup You’ve got to have some good coffee syrup — and a lot of guts — to crack the market in coffee-crazed Rhode Island. Dave’s has done just that. We locals were indoctrinated into the coffee cult at an early age, usually by a parent or grandparent who showed us how to achieve the perfect ratio of syrup to milk. Dave’s uses the same care in their syrups that goes into their well-sourced coffees. They use only natural ingredients. There is no high fructose corn syrup here, just tremendous flavor. The vanilla version is a hit with our nephews and we love the mocha. You will get that unique authentic flavor that will lead more generations to love our state drink.

For almost a 100 years now, Yacht Club Soda has been making cola in its Centerdale location. It has become, quite literally, an institution. It’s the official soda of the state of Rhode Island, and they feature around 30 flavors. It is another product that eschews high fructose corn syrup in favor of the more costly sugar. Classic cola and diet cola are featured alongside the old-school classics birch beer and cream soda. They are cleantasting because of the lack of additives. You can purchase it at local supermarkets such East Side Marketplace or at great local spots like Nick’s on Broadway. Cyberattacks are on the rise, with industries and organizations reporting rampant increases in phishing or business email compromise and a majority of Americans having personally experienced a major data breach. To address the heavy risk and cost of a breach in a company’s operations, Pannone Lopes Devereaux & O’Gara LLC (PLDO) and full-service assurance, tax, and business advisory firm, Citrin Cooperman have teamed up to produce a series of original podcasts dubbed “Cyber Crooks and Crime,” featuring PLDO Partner Brian J. Lamoureux, a leading voice and frequent commentator on social media and digital law and cybersecurity legal issues, and Kevin Ricci, CISA, CRISC, MCSE, QSA, a leader in the cybersecurity practice at Citrin Cooperman. The podcasts take a deep dive into the cybersecurity landscape, how hackers behave, and how best to make informed decisions to safeguard and protect an organization’s customers, employees, and brand. “Cybersecurity is not set it and forget it,” said Attorney Lamoureux. “The entire ecosystem of how we live is connected one way or another, from our mobile devices to our refrigerators to our checking accounts and our cars. This seamless digital interconnectedness has its benefits, but if hacked or infiltrated by cyber criminals, it can wreak havoc.” Episodes of the podcast series cover topics including “Know the Cyber Criminal Landscape,” “Cybersecurity Breach Response and Preparedness in the 21st Century,” “Taming and Reforming the “Wild West” of Information in the Digital Age and Protecting Privacy Rights” and “Meet “Your” Hacker – Who Are the Bad Guys.” Listeners will learn how to avoid falling prey to spoofing and phishing emails, factors to consider when conducting cybersecurity training, the real cost of a cyber incident to a company’s bottom line, the components of a cybersecurity plan and its importance to reducing the risk of litigation following a breach, legal issues regarding privacy rights and data protection, best practices when considering outsourcing cybersecurity and why cyber crooks are growing in numbers and how social media has given rise to the acceleration of cybercrime. Each month a new podcast will be released along with collateral material and other updates. To access the podcasts and resources, visit Cyber Crooks and Crime.

Rustic drive-in
1195 Eddie Dowling Highway, North Smithfield, Rhode Island Ah, the Drive-In’s. Built 1951, this three screen DriveIn Theatre is the last operating Drive-In in the state, showing movies from late April to early October every year. In 1958 there were 4,063 of Drive-In’s nationwide. Now, there are only a little more than 400. During the “golden age of the automobile”, drive-in theaters and other car-oriented concepts could be found everywhere. Through the 60s and 70s, DriveIns suffered closures and general stagnation. Some
turned to other sources of income, or other types of movies that had a guaranteed draw. Local tourist traps started sprouted up along major thoroughfares to get people out of their cars and into shops to spend money. Route 146 was one of these roads, especially before Route 95 was completed in 1969. Despite hard times for Drive-In owners, Beverly and Clem Desmarais bought the Rustic in 1986 and turned what had been an all-year single-screen “adults only” operation, into a three-screen seasonal family-oriented theater. In addition to introducing radio broadcast for the movies’ audio. After their passing in 2001, their daughter took over the operations. The Desmarais family sold the drive-in to the Boston Culinary Group in April, 2008, who continues to operate the facility. The company’s theatre division owns and operates 23 theaters throughout the northeast managing all aspects of theatre operations, including the projection booth, concessions stands and box offices. RIBSTF HAS HELPING RHODE ISLAND ON THE BRAIN A Q&A Session with The Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation
The Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation (RIBSTF) was established in February of 2008, due to a rise of concern that Rhode Island patients and their families receive too little support when facing the daunting task of navigating the news of a potential brain or spine tumor of themselves or a loved one. We asked some questions to find out all of the ways the RIBSTF is helping Rhode Island families. Q. What is the main objective of the RIBSTF? A. The RIBSTF’s mission is to increase brain and spine tumor awareness and to provide support to patients, families and providers through education and research.

Paper Business Brings G reetings
to
M iddletown N eighborhood
by Diane Fournaris Three sisters – well, one cousin and two sisters – who have been best friends since childhood made their dream a reality by starting a greeting card and paper products company in 2012. From its humble beginnings where Ali Flippin, one of the founders, made cards out of a tiny office, they have built a million-dollar business and global brand. The trio came to Josh Daly at the RISBDC in 2017 with the crazy dream of buying an unusual building (formerly a garage) in Middletown for their business, a dream that was realized in early 2018. “We are now the proud owners of truly the ugliest structure in Middletown,” said owner Jenni Laundon shortly after the purchase, “but with the loan, we were able to secure [with the help of RISBDC] we have the funds to renovate it and make it a very cool landmark. We feel we are in an awesome position to improve the neighborhood for all the kids who walk by every day [to and from school] and provide great, updated spaces for two other small businesses in town.” Through their hard work, the owners have achieved steady sales growth and expanded their market reach, and are
poised for even more significant growth in the near future. But more importantly – and it is clear every time you speak with them – they have built a company rooted in family values; spreading love, gratitude, and kindness. It is not just the charitable giving and community support the owners offer, but the joy in how they do business and view their responsibilities as business owners. After receiving an SBA 504 loan to purchase the building, the owners have continued to work with the RISBDC on financial management and strategic planning, and have participated in the RISBDC pilot Economic Gardening program. All of these efforts have put them on a path to sustained growth, not just of their business but their community as well. Learn more about E. THE RI BUSINESS DATA HUB IS HERE TO HELP LOCAL BUSINESSES GROW AND SUCCEED by Secretary Of State Nellie M. Gorbea
Small businesses and entrepreneurs are the backbone of Rhode Island’s economy. As your Secretary of State, I am committed to providing you the tools and resources you need to succeed. That’s why I am so excited to announce the launch of the RI Business Data Hub, an interactive resource available to the public on the Department of State’s website at http://sos.ri.gov/. The RI Business Data Hub allows you to quickly and easily create a customized snapshot of the business landscape across Rhode Island and in each city and town. The information displayed is based on entities that file with the Department of State’s Business Services Division.
Tapping into Technology
At the Department of State, our most valuable resource is information.

Historically, we’ve served as a filing cabinet. Over the last few years I have been transforming that filing cabinet into a hub that makes important information easily available to the public. The Business Services Division maintains Rhode Island’s state business registry. The agency tracks new business formation, types of business activity conducted, business locations, and business closings in Rhode Island. This results in mountains of data on the state’s business landscape. Our team has processed and analyzed this data to turn it into something relevant and accessible for people looking to start or grow their business.
The Power of Data
Let’s say you own a bakery in Cranston, and you’re looking to expand to a second location in a nearby city or town. Using the RI Business Data Hub, you can quickly and easily look at surrounding communities to see how many bakeries they have, and how long those bakeries have been in business. You can also explore and compare economic indicators in those communities, such as median household income and education level. Using this customized data set, entrepreneurs and business owners can make informed decisions that can help set their business on a path to success. More Resources The RI Business Data Hub is the latest resource for small businesses on the Department of State’s website. Other tools include the Business Basics page, which helps entrepreneurs educate themselves on terms and
topics they need to know before starting a business. The Business Assistant is an interactive page that guides potential business owners through a series of questions to provide a checklist of agencies they’ll need to contact, licenses they might require, and the potential costs associated with starting their business. These tools are available in English and Spanish, as well as other languages using Google Translate. Users can also review our Business and Economic Report, an analysis of Rhode Island’s business climate and economic trends from 2008 to 2017 that was conducted in partnership with Roger Williams University’s Mario J. Gabelli School of Business.

Customer Relationship Management System (CRM)
by Bryan B Mason A customer relationship management system (CRM) is a software package that allows a company to enter information about their customers and prospective customers and to keep notes and capture interactions such as emails back and forth. So why do you want one?
Provide Excellent Customer Service A key component of consistently providing excellent customer service is the ability to provide all staff that interacts with customers a complete view of the customer’s needs, prior interactions, preferences, status, commitments, next steps, follow up reminders, etc. This way, a customer can get the service they need from any staff member they interact with and not be dependent on a single person. The larger the organization or the larger the number of transactions, the more difficult this becomes without specialized software. Customer relationship management (CRM) software has been created specifically to meet this need.

With a CRM, if a member of your staff is out sick or on vacation, someone else can easily pick up where that person left off and provide seamless service to your customers. Having a 360 degree view of your customer interactions is extremely valuable to providing exemplary customer service.
Organize Sales Activities CRMs are often used to organize the sales activities of a company. In its most basic form, prospect information is entered in the system and reminders are set to follow up. Information will include the usual, name, title, company name, phone, email, mailing address, etc. Information about what the customer is looking for (the opportunity), who are the decision makers, what the time line is for a sale, the probability of close and the customer’s budget is also entered. Many CRM’s allow you to get reports that show projected sales by month. Understanding the various stages of a sale and assigning prospects to the correct sales stage for tracking purposes is key. This is important because you need to

Having a 360 degree view of your customer interactions is extremely valuable to providing exemplary customer service. provide information along the entire sales cycle and the types and frequency of information often follows patterns for each sales cycle stage. Important in getting the most productivity out of your sales staff is having them spend only the time needed to nurture a sale and no more along the entire sales process. Generally this means that basic information is provided at the outset, and then more detailed information as the process progresses up to the time you may meet with the prospective customer in person, etc. Being able to track if emails you have sent out are being read for example, help you determine a prospective customer’s interest. The more they read, the more information you want to send and the more attention you want to give them.
Don’t Lose Track of Your Sales Pipeline If a Salesperson Leaves If a salesperson leaves your company, a new person can immediately take over and continue the sales cycle with every lead using the information in your CRM. With a full history of interaction and information on opportunities, your company will not lose sales momentum.
Manage Sales Team Productivity and Effectiveness Besides providing transparency to management about their sales pipeline, a good CRM will allow management to measure the effectiveness of each sales person, determine if the sales staff is using their time wisely, is following company processes, etc. It also allows you to replace a sales person and have the new person pick right up with each prospect where the last person left off with them. Many CRMs have a lot of other features such as allowing the creation of estimates or proposals, allowing a estimate to be converted to an order, and so on. I have tried to outline some of the key reasons that a CRM can help your company. It mostly comes down to getting more customers, providing good service, and managing the effectiveness of your sales team.
