Back-to-School Tips for 2020
With the COVID-19 outbreak, this school year is likely to look a lot different for students. While this may be an exciting time for some kids after a summer of social distancing, it will be important for them to keep these tips in mind as they start their school years.
Mask Up There may be times where students are allowed to remove their masks, but it is important to teach students how to wear their mask the right way when required. Make sure that when the student in your life is wearing their mask, the bands are secured around their ears and their mouth and nose are completely covered. It is also a good idea to have younger children practice wearing their masks so they can get used to wearing it without feeling uncomfortable.
Make sure they’re practicing good hygiene All of the hand-washing lessons and hygiene tips that students are learning in health class are more important than ever. Make sure your kids are washing their hands after using the bathroom, before they leave home, and right when they return home. Keep any bad hygiene habits like nail-biting in check!
Teach safe socialization After a summer with much less social interaction, some kids may be very excited to see their friends, while others may need a little help getting back into the swing of things from a social perspective. Be ready to support your child if they are feeling a little shy. On the other side, make sure that your child keeps hygiene and safety in mind while spending time with other kids if your child is excited to socialize.
Be open and ready for questions Kids are likely going to have lots of questions about the rules and guidelines in their classes. It will be important to answer their questions while being supportive of those guidelines. The CDC has an excellent guide on talking to children about the coronavirus at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-lifecoping/talking-with-children.html
Be ready for possible cancellations Have a backup plan in case in-person classes are canceled. Make sure your child has space at home to attend online classes if needed. If you are unable to watch your child during the day, have a plan for supervision, whether it’s by daycare or a sitter.

by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Paula Pecora Cardi created Cardi’s Custom Creations to help others create beautiful crafts with pre-made kits in a workshop or in their own homes. One of her favorite crafting projects is making Gnomes. Paula’s Gnomes range from 3 to 4 feet tall, made of fabric and faux fur. The Gnomes are designed so they can be redecorated rather than replaced for each holiday and each season by bringing the Gnome back to class to give them a fun “MAKEOVER”. Paula also has the same “Makeover” concept built into her other craft classes such as wreaths and other home decor items.
Paula points out that marketing and selling crafts is not high stress, unlike selling some commercial products, and crafting itself is joy. When she is not crafting, Paula (a 27 year resident of Rhode Island) enjoys spending time with her husband, three children, two dogs and grandson.
Beautiful Crafts
Paula shared these ideas about crafting: • You Can Craft. Even if you think that you cannot, with the • •
•
•
Paula also combines her love of crafting beautiful things with her sales training and experience to show others how to make crafts, sell them and establish their own crafts business. She does this through both online and in-person programs. While Paula will market and sell crafts and crafting events for others, she prefers to show people how to do their own sales and marketing. Showing people how to market and sell themselves saves client’s money and makes Paula happy. As an experienced and talented crafts person Paula enjoys and takes pride in showing people how to make beautiful things. Some of her clients are local and some come from as far away as Florida and Indiana. Some clients come to Paula to learn to craft, others to learn to sell and market and others come to learn the entire process from purchasing supplies to delivering beautiful crafts to their clients.

right instructor you can!!!
Share What You Enjoy. Make beautiful things and share
them with others. You will save money if you craft rather than buying gifts. Open a Business. Crafting presents a great business opportunity for stay-at-home parents. You won’t succeed unless you try. Learn the process from an expert and you will succeed. Crafting Is Perfect When Homeschooling. If you are home schooling include an opportunity for your students to craft during the school day. Writing the procedure followed to make the crafts is a great writing exercise. Buy On Sale And Repurpose. After holidays stores drastically reduce the prices on holiday merchandise. Look at each of the items on sale and decide how you can repurpose them. For example buying a wooden holiday sign after a holiday and repainting it may be a lot less expensive than buying a blank sign. Be An Environmentalist. Rather than buying new decorations and either storing or discarding the old ones, update what you have to look fresh every season by giving the item a Makeover. Rather than using wrapping paper think about wrapping gifts in a new scarf, towel or other reusable item.
Shop Local Rhody readers are encouraged to refer to Paula’s FaceBook page for some design ideas as well as information about her upcoming offerings (FaceBook.com/ cardiscustomcreations). Autumn Recipes September is the “unofficial” start of apple season so here are some new recipes for you to try with your family.
Appetizer
Caramel Apple & Brie Skewers Total Time: 10 minutes | Yields: 6 skewers
Ingredients: 2 medium apples, cubed 1 log (6 ounces) Brie cheese, cubed 1/2 cup hot caramel ice cream topping 1/2 cup finely chopped macadamia nuts 2 tablespoons dried cranberries
Cooking Instructions: On each of 6 appetizer skewers, alternately thread apple and cheese cubes; place on a serving plate. Drizzle with caramel topping; sprinkle with macadamia nuts and cranberries.
Main Entree
Roasted Pork Loin Filet with Apples and Fennel Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes | Yields: 6
Ingredients:
Cooking Instructions:
1.75 lb Smithfield Applewood Smoked Bacon Marinated Fresh Pork Loin Filet
1. Preheat the oven to 450˚F. 2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, aluminum foil or use a Silpat silicone baking mat. 3. Trim the stalks of the fennel off and discard (or save for soup stock). Trim bottom off and slice lengthwise in half and then each half into 1/2” pieces. Trim ends off carrots and slice apple into 8-10 pieces. Toss all in a bowl with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and salt and pepper. 4. Transfer to baking sheet and roast until tender and caramelized, about 25 minutes. 5. While vegetables roast: In a large skillet with an oven proof handle, heat remaining 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the tenderloin and cook, turning frequently, until brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Transfer to the oven and roast for 12 minutes. (See Note 1) 6. Remove pork from the pan and allow to rest 3-5 minutes. Cut the tenderloin into thick 1” slices. 7. When vegetables are done, drizzle with balsamic vinegar and honey and toss to coat evenly. Taste and season with kosher salt if necessary and serve alongside sliced Pork Loin Filet.
2 tbsp olive oil (separated) 1 lb rainbow carrots 1 large fennel bulb 1 large apple of choice pinch of salt pinch of black pepper 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Use your freshly picked apples to make these fun and tasty dishes!
Note 1. Don’t overcook your pork, keep it nice and moist, not dried out. Internal temp should be between 145°-160°F and allow meat to rest at least 3-5 minutes.
Dessert
Apple Dumplings Prep time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes | Yields: 8
Ingredients: 2 granny smith apples 2 cans crescent dough 3/4 c. (1 1/2 sticks) butter, plus more for pan 1 c. brown sugar 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract Pinch kosher salt 8 oz. lemon-lime soda
Cooking Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350° and grease a large baking dish with butter. Peel and core apples then cut each apple into eighths. 2. Separate crescent dough into triangles. Starting at the wider end, roll one apple slice up in a crescent triangle. Repeat with remaining apple slices and crescents. Place into prepared pan. 3. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt together. Pour mixture over apples. 4. Pour soda around edge of pan, trying to avoid pouring on top of dumplings. Bake dumplings until golden, 30 minutes. 5. Serve warm with ice cream and spoon sauce from pan over dumplings. Don’t forget to indulge on some fresh seafood at some of the best restaurants while you’re there! Experience Block Island one last time before winter is here!
With various restrictions lifted this month, golf courses have been able to reopen provided they distance tee times and follow other social distancing regulations. Out of state guests are also allowed to golf now as long as their 14-day self-quarantine is over. You will have to reserve a tee time over the phone, but that’s a small price to pay for a round of golf in Rhode Isalnd before winter comes around.

It’s all about the journey when looking for a car. The purchase of the car took maybe 2 hours, but the hunt took forever. Article by Mike Casale
When I journey out to car shows, the one thing that I have always loved is the passion for certain makes and models. There are so many enthusiasts that showcase their loyalty, and it is amazing to see their collections. Sometimes you find a rare gem that you haven’t seen in 30-40 years. This is the case when I met with Michael Packard and his 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. This car was bought brand new out on Route 44 in East Providence back in 1979. The car has been in Rhode Island it’s whole life. The Trans Am is very loved and makes people happy whenever they see it out and about. It is definitely a good conversation piece. Michael acquired the car by searching through Craigslist. He had been on the hunt for one of these for some years. After looking the car over, Michael made the deal and took the car home shortly after. As Michael said best, “it’s all about the journey when looking for a car. The purchase of the car took maybe 2 hours, but the hunt took forever”. For the car itself, the specs are mostly stock from 1979. It has a Big Block 403 Oldsmobile motor, automatic transmission, 373 gears, original paint and the original interior. Michael is a GM enthusiast. He has several other GM vehicles, including classics and newer vehicles in his personal collection. When I asked him why he is such a GM enthusiast, his response was that “in the late 70’s and early 80’s, it was hard to like anything that Ford was producing, and unless you were a fan of the Chrysler K-Cars, you really only had GM to rely on for making nice looking and well-performing products”. Michael always loved the lines and the decal packages of the Trans Am. In his collection, Michael also has two 1980 Corvette’s and a 1980 Cadillac Seville that has been completely restored. He also has a 2019 C8 Corvette as his new muscle/performance toy. Michael goes to some of the car shows, but he is not interested in the trophies. He mainly uses the cars just to cruise around, have a good time, and chat about
being an enthusiast with some of the other great enthusiasts out there. Michael likes seeing so many people get pure joy out of seeing his cars. As Michael said, even with the Cadillac Seville, “Some people had not seen that car since maybe their uncle or grandfather had one almost 40 years ago”. That brings joy and pleasure to see them reminisce about the past. Michael is currently a member of the Corvette club in Rhode Island. As far as the ride quality, Michael has made it very clear that this car rides even better than some of the new luxury cars, including his own personal Lexus. It is just very tough to replicate that kind of ride quality today. From the finest details of the Trans Am, to the overall build quality, Michael truly enjoys every aspect of this car. The team at Xtreme Restorations has always been very helpful to Michael. He highly recommends their work. They are extremely knowledgeable about the Trans Am’s and the F-Bodies in general. When Michael brought this Trans Am in to Xtreme Restorations, there was not an extreme amount of work that was needed, as the car was all original. It was more touch up work, including some paint on the fenders, suspension work, new carpet, and some minor details that needed to be tweaked. Getting parts for this car was somewhat tough, but that is what makes the team at Xtreme so good. Along with Michael’s research and passion, they were able to work together to acquire exactly what was needed. The only major issue was that this car had a custom car stereo in it when Michael acquired the vehicle. To get that out was a bit of a pain, especially since he wanted to restore to original specs. But they were able to work around that, and remove the aftermarket stereo. What was so unique about this Trans Am was that you see lots of Black Trans Am’s out there, but not too many with the Camel Interior, which goes really well with the Gold wheels and the Phoenix graphics on the car. It it just another element that makes this car so unique.

Casey Farm
2 3 2 5 B o s t on Nec k R oad , S aunde r s t o w n , R ho de Is l and Casey Farm, located in Saunderstown, Rhode Island covered over 300 acres of land and was a mid-eighteenth century homestead overlooking beautiful Narragansett Bay. It was the center of a plantation that produced food for local and foreign markets. The farm was purchased by Joseph Morey of Jamestown on March 30, 1702. Prior to him purchasing Casey Farm, the land had been involved in a dispute between Connecticut and Rhode Island, dating back to its “sale to a group of English colonists from both colonies by the Narragansetts in 1659.
Soon after Joseph purchased the farm, he gifted it to his loving daughter, Mary and her husband Daniel Coggeshall. After Mary died, the land was passed on to their son, Daniel Coggeshall Jr. Around 1750, Daniel Coggeshall Jr. and his wife built the mansion house that is still standing today. It was in fact, a prominent landmark for sailors along the western passage of the Narragansett Bay because it stands 135 feet above sea level. The Coggeshalls had 7 children who lived very fashionably on the farm. Since the farm was so close to Newport, which was one of the largest ports in New England, they were able to rent their land to farmers who could provide produce. Crops included corn, wheat, rye, barley and apples for cider. An important product was Narragansett cheese, which was sold in large quantities in the southern colonies. You could even find sheep on the farm! Because of the burning of Newport during the Revolutionary War, the farm settled into a pattern of absentee ownership. In 1955 the farm and Casey family papers were donated to the preservation organization Historic New England. Next time you stop by Casey Farm, be sure to tour the farmyard and cemetery, where six generations of Caseys are buried! Getting in the Game
Q U O N N I E

Article by Josh Daly
All Pete Silva wanted was to get in the game. As the owner of Quonnie Bait & Tackle, Silva was seeking a loan that would enable him to purchase the property the business had been leasing. Owning the property outright would open new doors for the development of the outdoor and sporting goods company, and create exciting new opportunities for future expansion. Silva sought the support of the RISBDC to learn about financing opportunities and prepare an attractive loan package. According to Silva, advisor Josh Daly walked him through the lending process, provided trusted counsel that helped him obtain the needed financing, and genuinely celebrated his success. Out of all the assistance his business has received, Silva states the best has been the no-cost business counseling and resources provided by the RISBDC.
