Jack Nicklaus plays the first official round at Pawleys Plantation. 1988

As “The Golden Bear,” the great Jack Nicklaus, completed work on his Lowcountry masterpiece at Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, the product of his philosophy and hard work from a quarter century ago remains well intact in the present day: “My basic philosophy is that golf is much more a game of precision than of power,” said Nicklaus in 1988. “The course at Pawleys Plantation is designed to reward the player who plays intelligently. This is a fun course with lots of variety and challenge for all levels of golfers.

The family of one visiting golfer, Tim Gavrich, was so taken by its introduction to the Pawleys Plantation experience that they’ve long since made it part of their everyday lives. Gavrich fondly shares his thoughts on what this historic design has come to mean to him and his family over the years.

“I designed Pawleys Plantation to capture the natural terrain and to complement and enhance the beauty of the saltmarsh and Lowcountry. In so doing, I believe we’ve created what will become one of the most memorable, and certainly one of the most photographed, courses in all of golf.

Official Grand Opening 1988

“I hope you will get much enjoyment and pleasure from playing the course. Play well!” Twenty-five glorious years and some 1 million rounds later, visiting golfers have taken Nicklaus’ advice to heart, and regularly made Pawleys Plantation a staple of their Grand Strand golf experience.

Marsh and Fairway: Growing Up Playing Pawleys Plantation By Tim Gavrich

I grew up in Connecticut, but much of my formative golf took place in the summer heat of South Carolina, at Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club. The course is 364 days older than I am, but we did not become acquainted until about 1998, when my family began spending most of our vacations in Pawleys Island. I hit the near-island 13th green with my tee shot the first time I confronted it, albeit from the Red Tail Hawk tee set up at 40 yards. A decade and a half later, Jack Nicklaus’ efforts at Pawleys Plantation still charm, beguile and bedevil me. I now live off the 15th tee and would estimate that I’ve played more than 400 rounds there, during which time my handicap has gone from 18 to +2.2. But one of Pawleys’ enduring features—the one I love most, even more than the picturesque marshside holes on the back nine—is that it is unconquerable. Many golf courses are fun to play a few times, but after a while you start to get the sense that they can be “had,” can be figured out. Pawleys Plantation is not that kind of golf course. Pawleys Plantation’s endless intrigue is thanks to designer Jack Nicklaus, whose golf courses always test one’s mental as well as physical golfing abilities. Not only are the shots that the player is asked to hit often challenging, there are few true “breather holes.” This makes Pawleys Plantation a course that seizes a player’s attention from the opening tee shot and does not relinquish it. Nothing short of Nicklaus-like concentration is required if players want to make birdies. In this way, my game has been shaped by so many

dozens of trips around this challenging course. I played golf competitively in high school and college and still play in tournaments today. Because Pawleys Plantation is such a complete golfing test, I never feel unprepared to play a certain course in competition, which is one of the things I love most about playing it. No two rounds are remotely the same, which is more than can be said of many area courses. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since we finished Pawleys Plantation. “The low coastal area in South Carolina and the Myrtle Beach area have always been among my favorites. With the golf course at Pawleys, each hole has its own individual personality. It’s a wonderful golf course that has stood the test of time. We’ve had great ratings. People have enjoyed playing it, and when they come to the Myrtle Beach area it’s a must. “I’m very proud to have been involved in Pawleys Plantation. It’s a golf course that has given me great pleasure when people have asked me about it through the years. I just hope the next 25 years is as enjoyable and successful as the last 25.” -Jack Nicklaus, 2013

Prestwick Country Club in Surfside Beach near Myrtle Beach, SC Myrtle Beach, has recently earned an overall 1001 Links Rd. rating of 8.1 from the reviewers at the Myrtle (843) 293-4100 Beach Golf Insider, garnering praise for course PrestwickCountryClub.com conditions, customer service, and overall experience. This Pete and P.B. Dye designed golf course Par: 72 Slope :138 features many elements of a classic Scottish style USGA Rating: 73.0 course, with berms and undulating mounds that make up the entire course layout. The most Architect....... Pete & P.B. Dye intriguing aspect of Prestwick’s 18-hole layout is that the front and back nine feel like two totally different courses. The front nine takes you through forest covered with trees, water and swales in the middle of greens. As you proceed to the back nine, it gives way to a more open, links feel, with narrow fairways but does not punish golfers for going too long. Golf Digest recognizes this course as “5 Best Kept Secret Courses in America.” The signature hole No. 14, a 451-yard, par 4, requires a shot over water to a narrow fairway guarded by a huge trench on its left side and a series of swales on the right. A masterpiece, Prestwick Country Club has already been recognized as one of the area’s finest golf courses. Amenities: Club Repair, Video Lessons, Practice Area, Golf Shop www.mbgolfinsider.com

New Speed Pocket Delivers Extraordinary Distance, Performance and Forgiveness TaylorMade Golf has introduced SpeedBlade™ – a game-improvement iron that launches the ball exceptionally high and far. The key performance feature that separates SpeedBlade from the pack is the Speed Pocket™, a handle-bar shaped slot in the sole of the 3-7 irons that enables a large area of the face to flex and rebound at impact, resulting in faster ball speed, higher launch and better feel. “The Speed Pocket performs where golfers need it most,” said Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s director of iron, wedge and putters development. “Our research indicates that 72% of shots by 5-25 handicap golfers are impacted below the center of the face. That typically results in low-launching shots of inconsistent distance. The Speed Pocket helps you launch those low-impact shots on a consistently higher, longer carrying and softer-landing flight.” The improved Speed Pocket has been widened and lengthened, giving golfers more face area toward the toe and heel that promotes a high launch angle, strong ball flight and a steep, quick stopping descent angle. The Speed Pocket also features a cut through slot internally, which allows for more flex and rebound on the bottom part of the face, making the SpeedBlade iron set the fastest face TaylorMade has ever created, measuring right up to USGA COR limit. SpeedBlade irons are available in 8-piece sets and priced at $799 steel, $899 graphite. Learn more at TaylorMadeGolf.com

My favorite hole, however, was #17. It

Rees Jones Visits His “Baby,”

Arcadian Shores

Legendary golf course architect Rees Jones - who has had a hand in designing or remodeling hundreds of layouts worldwide, including 11 U.S. Open venues - paid a recent visit to the home of his very first effort as a solo designer: Arcadian Shores Golf Club in Myrtle Beach.

Rees Jones

46

It was during this special visit that Mr. Jones shared his first-hand impressions of Arcadian Shores as it sits today compared to when it opened in 1974 and earned plenty of national acclaim not long after. What was it like to build your first solo design in Myrtle Beach where your father, legendary course architect Robert Trent Jones, also made his mark? When I got the opportunity to build Arcadian Shores in the early ‘70s - a course adjacent to the Dunes Club that my father had already built - it was a really exciting prospect for me. We built a golf course that was very well received and made all the top 100 lists, so it joined the Dunes Club in terms of reputation for a while … I just really love Myrtle Beach. I’ve been here a lot - my wife’s family spends the summers here … this is very much a part of my life being here in Myrtle Beach. That’s what was more important to me, that I became a part of the whole Myrtle Beach golf family and was able to get a wonderful piece of property from the Burroughs brothers (to build Arcadian Shores).

Golf Insider - Myrtle Beach

Fall 2013

Describe your impressions as you toured the grounds at Arcadian Shores, some 38 years after this course was first built? What’s fascinating about Arcadian Shores is that my footprint is still here, much like the footprint at Bethpage Black was still there when we re-did that (in preparation for the 2002 U.S. Open). As we restored Bethpage Black, I think we can easily restore Arcadian Shores back to its prominence because nothing (about the course layout) has basically changed ... There’s some elasticity to this golf course where if we want to add a bit of length here and there on a couple of the par 5’s, we have the opportunity to get this golf course over 7,000 yards so the young bombers have a place to play but not make it overly long. It’s a lot like what (course architect) A.W. Tillinghast said about Bethpage Black: “I designed it for today, but put in the elasticity so Rees Jones can bring it back into prominence” - which is what Rees Jones is hoping to do at his own baby, Arcadian Shores, in the near future.

Most importantly, Golf Academy of America students and graduates, more than 12,000 of them, have volunteered their time and energy to promote the game of golf to juniors through lessons, clinics, and tournament assistance including events like the John Monroe Holliday Junior Championship, a very large Junior event held annually in Myrtle Beach.

Through Little Linksters’ popular Best Pee Wee Golf Swing in the World contest, youth have received great prizes as well as the thrill of having golf celebrities such as Annika Sorenstam, Hank Haney and Paula Creamer judge their swings. “We recognize that junior golfers are the future of golf, and developing the next generation of golfers has always been a priority for us,” said Golf Academy of America President Jim Hart. At Golf Academy of America’s five campuses throughout the country, students receive training on providing instruction and guidance to junior golfers.

Brendon Elliott, Little Linksters Founder

“How as an industry do we ever think that we can compete with other popular sports if we don’t start children at the same ages they do?” said Elliott, the 2013 recipient of the North Florida PGA Junior Golf Leader Award. Elliott’s answer was a Little Linksters Golf Academy, Little Linksters mobile programs throughout Florida and Little Linksters Tour events. Interest

Clubs Fore Christmas Last Christmas, Golf Academy of America collected more than 800 golf clubs to donate to junior golfers in its second-annual Clubs Fore Christmas campaign. Students of the two-year golf college, who learn club building and fitting as part of the curriculum, clean, re-grip and re-shaft those clubs in order to prepare them to benefit the children of the Lorena Ochoa Golf Foundation and the First Tee of Phoenix. In exchange for bringing used clubs to campuses in Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Dallas, Phoenix and San Diego, contributors received complimentary half-hour lessons with Golf Academy of America students and expert instructors.

A Legend Among Us

Nine months after receiving the Legend of the PGA award, Mann was asked how the notoriety has affected his life and career. In true humble spirit, he was quick to remove the focus from himself. Instead he spoke of his accomplishments and achievements as a way of shinning a bright light on that which he holds near and dear to his heart, the program to which he is so dedicated at Coastal Carolina. The Wall College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, the premier accrediting body for business colleges and is recognized both nationally and internationally. The PGA Golf Management Program at CCU is also one of only nineteen programs in the nation accredited by the PGA of America

TEAM CLASSIC

FatherSonGolf.com The most humbling and human of all sporting pursuits, golf teaches us patience, honesty, integrity, and persistence. Throughout the course of every round, we recognize the fleeting nature of success and the constant hard work required to sustain it. We learn to brush off disappointment, while vowing to do better the next time. We learn that we’re vulnerable to mistakes. We learn to project humility when victorious and to be gracious in defeat; each one a worthwhile trait our dads try to instill in us as we come of age. Each year in July, fathers and sons from around the world gather in Myrtle Beach to take part in a three-day tournament that has become the largest father-son golf event in the world. Last year’s 54-hole competition drew over 900 players from 46 states and 7 foreign countries - 24 flights in all. Eligibility for the tournament is open to fathers and sons; grandfathers and grandsons; stepfathers and stepsons; fathers and sons in law; and uncles and nephews. However, the motto at the Father & Son event is; any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad. The tournament allows any combination of players on a team as long as there is a generation gap between them, they do not need to be related. This year’s 2013 Father & Son Team Classic had a “down to the wire” finish filled with clutch shots and holed

putts. Bryan and Bryce Kendrick of Knoxville, Tenn. nipped two - time winners Gary Carpenter Sr. and Jr. by a stroke to the take the overall Gross Championship. The Kendricks shot 65 in Thursdays Texas Scramble format, 66 in Fridays Best Ball Format, and 64 in Saturdays Captain’s Choice Format. For the first time in the tournament’s history – a National Senior Division was established. This years National Senior Champion went to the team of Donnie and Kris Blanks. The Blanks’ are no strangers to this annual event. The Blanks’ won the first two Father & Son Team Classic events, 16 years ago. This was their first trip back to the tournament since 1999. Due to Kris’ PGA TOUR medical exemption for 2013, his usually busy schedule allowed he and his father to come back and compete. This year’s tournament benefited the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that gives back to the families of our brave military. Over twelve thousand dollars was raised in this event alone. The Lesson Tee with

Mel Sole

After a playing career on the South African PGA Tour, Mel turned his focus to teaching under the tutelage of Phil Ritson back in the 70’s. Phil had been coach to Mel and several other Pros, including the renown Gary Player, who were playing the SA PGA Tour. Mel found the teaching side of golf to be hugely rewarding, and his coaching of Junior Golf Teams in South Africa produced 2 National Champions and several Junior Champions. In 1984, Mel moved to Toronto, Canada, where he opened the Canadian Golf Academy, an indoor/outdoor teaching facility. In 1988 his long-time friend and mentor, Phil Ritson–now based in Floridainvited Mel to head up the Phil Ritson Golf Studio in Myrtle Beach, SC. The golf school relocated to Pawleys Island, SC in 1991 as the Phil Ritson – Mel Sole Golf School, and has had great success at beautiful Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club for 15 years. The school was renamed Mel Sole Golf School in 2013. ‘TOP 25 USA Golf Schools’ . . . . . . . GOLF Magazine since 1999 Certificate of Excellence Award . . . . . TIME is On Your SIDE with This Pitching Tip! Most golfers struggle with pitch shots inside 50 yards because they have trouble gauging how much swing produces how much distance. • Practice hitting pitch shots while imagining you have a large clock face in front of you. Learn to swing your arms and stop at various ‘hours of the clock.’ Using significant wrist cock to help deliver a slightly downward blow, stop at the hour of 7 o’clock and then follow through the shot with your body weight on your front foot. Hit several shots to determine the distance the ball travels from your 7 o’clock shot. • Next, hit pitch shots swinging your arm to 8 o’clock. When you’ve consistently hit to a certain distance, you’ve got your 8 o’clock shot distance nailed down. • Then, swing your arm and stop at 9 o’clock. Note the distance achieved. • Now you’ve got a reliable arsenal of pitch shots for different distances. Finally, remember to keep your weight on the front foot (even at top of backswing), keep your pace consistent throughout the swing (like the pendulum of a clock), and follow through completely, as seen in the pictures. www.mbgolfinsider.com

BIG TIME ARCHITECTS BRING ELITE COURSES TO THE GRAND STRAND

E

veryone knows the Grand Strand has a massive quantity of golf courses, with over 100 ranging from Pawleys Island to North Myrtle Beach. However, within that quantity are gems of sparkling quality, with courses designed by some of the most prestigious architects in the game.

If rustic beauty carved out of the lowcountry environment is your style, then you’ll be blown away by TRUE BLUE GOLf PLANTATION (hole #7 pictured above). Visionary architect Mike Strantz designed this jewel on the grounds of a former rice plantation. Known for his expertise in incorporating the natural landscape into course design, Strantz utilized the undulating terrain, native grasses and sandy areas to transform the landscape into a challenging 18-hole layout. With a wink, this course garnered the nickname “Golfer’s Heaven and Hell,” referencing its abundance of expansive waste bunkers and length (measuring 7,126 yards from the tips). Since 2000, its features have been softened a bit, giving a more “heavenly” feel to the course. With five par-5’s, five par-3’s and wide fairways, the course can be enjoyed by both casual golfers and low handicappers alike. Traveling up the coast to North Myrtle Beach, you will find another sterling set of courses sure to delight any golfer. Barefoot Resort features four championshipquality courses from four of the biggest names in golf: Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Tom fazio and Pete Dye.

www.mbgolfinsider.com

82

The Dye Course is semi-private, and is widely considered the most difficult of the four Barefoot courses. The white sands of its bunkers contrast strikingly with the lush greenery throughout. Golfers will have to navigate many pitfalls in order to tame this challenge, but the reward is well worth the work. The Dye course is also famous for annually hosting the Hootie and the Blowfish Monday after the Masters Tournament. The FAZIo Course features both natural and man-made lakes in its design, with water on all but 3 holes. The course has some European aspects (you don’t return to the clubhouse after nine holes), but retains a Coastal Carolina feel with live oaks and pines featured prominently. Natural elevation changes and waste bunkers require strategy and offer a dazzling visual display. The LoVe Course has four holes centered on the recreated ruins of a 19th century plantation. It’s clear that SC native Davis Love III designed this course with the natural environment in mind, showcasing lowcountry aspects Love experienced while golfing along the coast.

The NorMAN Course utilizes its location on the Intracoastal Waterway with seven holes waterfront, making it one of the most scenic courses in the area. Norman designed the course around area characteristics such as natural wild grasses and gently rolling terrain. Because of this, golfers will find that bump-and-run shots often come in to play.

Of course, it will take more than a day to experience all these marvelous courses. Luckily, Myrtle Beach Golf Central offers you tee times and spectacular accommodations at both True Blue Resort and Barefoot Resort for you and your golf group. From two bedroom condos to luxurious four bedroom tower suites, we ensure that your Myrtle Beach excursion is an experience that you’ll want to repeat year after year. Keep It In The

Fa i r w a y

Jay Smith Head Golf Professional Prestwick Country Club

Golf Tournament

Planning and Execution Prestwick Country Club conducts numerous tournaments during the course of a year. The majority of our tournaments are member events. We also conduct some Section Events, as well as charitable fundraisers. We try to give back to the community as much as possible, whether it is hosting an event, playing in an event at another course, or donating gift certificates.

Many tournaments are generated by Golf Associations or Country Clubs for their membership, while other tournaments in Myrtle Beach are fundraisers. Many of the fundraisers are for a good cause and generate money for organizations such as The Heart Association, Community Kitchen, etc. These events take hard work and dedication for all participants to have a fun and enjoyable time. There are many determining factors when planning and administering a tournament. A tournament committee is needed to make crucial decisions. The first objective is to secure a course, time, and date for the tournament, as well as the price. The tournament committee must negotiate with a course that they feel will be a good fit for the tournament. One major objective of the tournament committee is to obtain a signed, detailed contract with all responsibilities of the parties involved. Country Clubs with a membership obtain this data at least six months in advance. Once the sight of the tournament is secured, a tournament committee needs to meet and assign each member of the committee certain responsibilities.

94

These responsibilities include: 1. Determine format, rules, and cost for the tournament. 2. Create a flyer with all of the information about the tournament. 3. A committee member will need to be in charge of sponsorships as well as prizes for the tournament. This individual will need to compose a letter to present to businesses they will be soliciting for donations. 4. Volunteers are needed at every tournament to help out with all tasks at hand. 5. Once the player list is compiled, the administrator of the tournament needs to give all the information to the host course. There, the staff at the host course will prepare cart signs, scorecards, rules sheets and scoreboards for the event. The administrator of the tournament will be there to make sure registration is fulfilled, all monies are collected, and the host course is paid in a timely manner. 6. Once the event has been completed, the tournament income will be dispersed as needed. For example, if the tournament was a fund raiser, the income would be donated to that particular charity. To conduct a golf tournament of any kind properly and efficiently, the administrator of the tournament needs to be committed to the tournament and willing to go the extra mile.
