he season is here! And yes, we mean golf season. 120 days of the best golf of the year, from November through the end of March. Many area courses have undergone some major renovations and are eager to welcome the millions of golfers from across America. The Grand Strand’s temperate climate, variety of courses, and reasonable rates make the area the destination of choice for many avid golfers. Here at Golf Insider, we are thrilled to see the game of golf continue to grow. And despite what we may hear, the game of golf is growing. Golf is one of America’s most popular weekend activities. Whether we are on the course playing, or in our living room watching on TV, America loves golf! Granted, other sporting events may garner higher TV ratings, but how many 50 year olds are actually out playing football in their spare time? So here’s to you, fellow golfer! We hope you enjoy your rounds here at the beach and we hope this book serves you well during your stay. Sincerely, www.mbgolfinsider.com

Stewart # 5
The creation of Thistle Golf Club began with a beautiful piece of land and a talented course designer, Tim Cate. The skillful blending of natural elevation changes and wetlands with carefully carved bunkers and large greens is visually stunning. Recent work and renovations include revamped traps and reconstruction of numerous bulkheads. New greens are currently being installed, one nine at a time. The original Bentgrass greens proved difficult to maintain during the high heat and humidity of the summer months. The renovation of the greens, to TifEagle Bermuda, started with the MacKay nine (completed September 2014), and will be followed by the Cameron nine (May 2015), and will finish up with the Stewart nine (July
MacKay #8
2015). The conversion to TifEagle Bermuda will provide a more consistent surface year-round. Thistle is a luxury gated community, where custom designed homes offer unobstructed views of rolling fairways, shimmering lakes and acres of wildflowers. This course is one you will not want to miss.

Course designer Dan Maples has frequently referred to Willbrook Plantation as “One of my best,” and most golfers agree. The first hole is a challenging par-4 with a slight dog-leg right that requires a well placed tee shot over a former rice field to have a clear shot at the green for your second shot. The par 5 15th hole gives up very few birdies and demonstrates the many challenges of the wetlands, waterways and stately oaks used in this great design. ee shots are down hill just short of a creek, and then your second and third shots are back up hill to a well-protected green. For the sixth year in a row, Golf for Women has listed Willbrook on their list of “America’s 50 Best Courses,” (#25) and Golf Digest awarded it 4.5 Stars since 2006 in their “Places to Play.” Amenities: Golf Shop, Grill, Bar, Driving Range, Practice Area 14

Hole 18 is a true risk-reward chance, a 538-yard beauty that plays as a three-shotter for most but is reachable in two for the daring and accurate player. The first order of business is to thread a long, straight tee ball between a stand of trees on the left and a meandering creek on the right. This creek crosses the fairway some 330 yards off the back tee and feeds into a lake that runs down the remainder of the left side of the hole and protects the front, left and rear of the putting surface. The player who bails out too far to the right is likely to catch any of a number of bunkers, but a mighty second shot that matches the first can yield an eagle opportunity to close the round. Heron Point will not overpower players with its length, but rather it demands precise ball placement throughout the course. The greens are very well-defended by bunkers and grass hollows and water comes into play on ten holes. The most notable hole is the 5th, par four. Number five at Heron Point is a true 90-degree dogleg, bending sharply to the left. A cluster of three bunkers sit on the inside of the elbow-shaped curve in the fairway, tempting aggressive players off the tee, while simultaneously providing enough room to the right to allow for more conservative play, leaving a longer approach. Prestwick Country Club in Surfside Beach near Myrtle Beach, SC Myrtle Beach, has recently earned an overall 1001 Links Rd. rating of 8.1 from the reviewers at the Myrtle (843) 293-4100 Beach Golf Insider, garnering praise for course PrestwickCountryClub.com conditions, customer service, and overall experience. This Pete and P.B. Dye designed golf course Par: 72 Slope :138 features many elements of a classic Scottish style USGA Rating: 73.0 course, with berms and undulating mounds that make up the entire course layout. The most Architect....... Pete & P.B. Dye intriguing aspect of Prestwick’s 18-hole layout is that the front and back nine feel like two totally different courses. The front nine takes you through forest covered with trees, water and swales in the middle of greens. As you proceed to the back nine, it gives way to a more open, links feel, with narrow fairways but does not punish golfers for going too long. Golf Digest recognizes this course as “5 Best Kept Secret Courses in America.” The signature hole No. 14, a 451-yard, par 4, requires a shot over water to a narrow fairway guarded by a huge trench on its left side and a series of swales on the right. A masterpiece, Prestwick Country Club has already been recognized as one of the area’s finest golf courses. Amenities: Club Repair, Video Lessons, Practice Area, Golf Shop www.mbgolfinsider.com

he Radcliffs had been making the annual pilgrimage to Myrtle Beach since Josh Radcliff was only six years old. Each summer Phillip, his father, would play in the National Father & Son Team Classic with his Uncle Pete. Josh always wanted to know if it was a Father & Son golf tournament, shouldn’t he be playing? Phillip made a promise to Josh that he could play in the tournament when he turned ten. It was at age ten that Josh, without hesitation, asked his Dad for his ticket. They have now played in the event ten times. Each year Phillip has watched his son’s golf game increase, and in July he was able to join him on that journey to success. Phillip and Josh Radcliff of Coppell, TX took top honors during the 2014 National Father & Son Team Classic. Phillip, who turned 51 while in Myrtle Beach, is a 4.2 handicap. Josh, 19, recently completed his freshman year on the University of Texas-Arlington golf team and is a plus-1. They shot a 6-

With their victory, the Radcliffs earn a trip to the European Father & Son Golf Championship in late October in Spain. The tournament will be in the midst of Josh’s fall college golf schedule, but he plans to make the necessary arrangements.

Fall 2014
2014 was the 17th annual Father & Son Team Classic with a field that consisted of more than 700 golfers from 43 states and 5 countries. The three-day tournament took place on eight golf courses along the Grand Strand. This was also the first year that the tournament has allowed for overall champions, both net and gross, to be awarded in three different divisions; National, Senior and Super Senior. As a the largest Father/Son event in the world, the Father & Son Team Classic has always placed an emphasis on family bonds and particularly those created through memorable events and fun competition, specifically, golf. Based upon the feedback from many participants over the years, there is a strong consensus of the need to include daughters. Therefore, the tournament committee for the Father & Son Team Classic has announced two additional golf tournaments to be held concurrently with the Father & Son Team Classic; (1) the Father & Daughter Team Classic and (2) the Mother & Daughter Team Classic. While the three-day Father & Son Team Classic will be held July 16 – 18, 2015, the Father & Daughter and Mother & Daughter Team Classics will be held
July 16 and 17, 2015 as a two-day competition. Participants for all three events will basically share the same schedule of events to include tournament registration, the Family Affair featuring Demo Alley and format of play for the first two rounds. The awards ceremony, however, will be held separately and immediately following the second round for the Father/Mother & Daughter tournament and following the third round for the Father & Son tournament. As for the format of play, all participants on day one will play Better Ball (using 80% of handicap); on day two will play Captain Choice (using 30% of total team handicap); on day three only the Father & Son tournament participants will play Alternate Shot (using 40% of total team handicap). Brad Greenstein, tournament director for the Father & Son Team Classic presented by PGA TOUR Superstore states, “So many times we have been asked, ‘Why aren’t the daughters included?’ We were hesitant because of the uncertainty of having enough to fill the tournament field. Now, as the Father & Son ramps up for its eighteenth year, it’s time to open the door for the entire family to enjoy the camaraderie, the bonding experience and the lifetime of memories created.”

utting accounts for approximately 40% or more of your total score in a round of golf! The four common ingredients among all good putters are as follows: 1) Touch 2) Ability to read greens 3) Aim 4) Ability to start the ball on the intended target line.
Touch is a skill that can be learned and acquired. The easiest way to develop touch is playing the forty foot game. To play this game, use five balls and hit forty foot putts with different variations. Hit up hill, down hill, right to left and left to right putts. Changing the terrain will challenge your pace, and this is the first requirement to developing touch. By having five balls, you should begin to develop the proper speed control for each condition. Teach yourself this ingredient first! Aim is our next big ingredient. I’m adamant about using the aim line on my golf ball but I know it is not for everyone. If the line on the ball does not work for you, use the spot alignment procedure. The target line is the most important line in all of golf, and it must be established from putt to drive. The
spot alignment procedure is a technique when you are trying to locate a spot no more than 6 inches in front of the ball at which you want to aim your putter face. Try to roll the ball over this spot on its journey to the hole. One technique, spot alignment or using the aim line, must be utilized in order to make putts. ” The final key ingredient is starting the ball on its intended line! Quiet hands, wrists, and forearms are essential. There should be absolutely no flipping of the wrists, and you should keep forearm rotation to a minimum. Be careful what you read in various golf publications concerning any opening and closing of the clubface in the putting motion. Strokes come in different sizes and shapes. The law of the machine states that a machine with the least moving parts is less likely to break down. Therefore, if you do not need to move it, do not move it, and if you do need to move it, move it as little as possible. The less hand, wrist, and forearm activity you have increases the chances of having your clubface square at impact. This is important to your ball starting on its intended line. Can you really roll it? Use 32 putts on 18 holes as your magical number and chase your dream.

he process of installing new greens doesn’t happen overnight. The whole course (or at least nine holes) must be closed for several weeks or months. Carolina National has been progressing through the renovation process of their 27 holes, since May 2013 and disruptions have been minimal. The Egret Nine was the first to get a makeover, followed by Heron, and the Ibis Nine was recently completed in August of 2014. Tom Derrick, the golf course superintendent at Carolina National, is delighted with the outcome. The course plays differently with the new greens, according to Tom. The new greens are harder and faster, and those who play regularly at Carolina National have had to learn new techniques. “Lob wedges have become very popular here,” said Tom. “Until they adjust, our golfers

may find themselves over the green on their approach shots.” Champion Bermuda grass is not as soft as the previous Bent grass and has a tendency to be much faster. Bermuda grass thrives in heat and humidity. Most golf courses in our area have Bermuda grass in the fairways and rough, and many have converted to Bermuda for their greens also. Bermuda goes dormant in the winter and loses its color so many courses overseed greens, fairways and rough with rye each fall because tourists do not want to come to the “Golf Capital of the World” and play on brown grass. Carolina National will not be overseeding, instead they will be painted so that they look green during the dormant months. Superintendents have found overseed-

The fairways and rough usually respond to the change easily, but greens can be a problem during the transition. “We kept our new greens cut low and fast during the summer months,” Tom said. “As the growth rate slows down during the fall, we’ve let them get a little longer and will keep them that way during the winter so they’ll winter well.” Carolina National is an Audubon Certified Golf Course. Birds and other wildlife abound with wild grasses and flowers thriving with the minimal use of chemicals.

I
have been on the LPGA Tour for 13 years, and I’m excited to be back here in South Carolina. Myrtle Beach is somewhere I used to vacation with my family when I was younger.
Morning yoga on beautiful Litchfield Beach.

I like to go to the beach as often as possible. A perfect day for me would be to get up and do something active in the morning like yoga, running or walking on the beach, or paddleboarding. What’s cool about paddleboarding is that it’s becoming more popular, and you can paddleboard in almost as many places as you can play golf now. The Myrtle Beach area is certainly no exception – especially around Pawleys Island, with all the wildlife and the great saltwater marsh areas I got to see while Golf Insider - Myrtle Beach

Why I Love Myrtle Beach by Natalie Gulbis
paddleboarding there recently. It’s just really, really pretty. One of the coolest places to stop is the Hammock Shops in Pawleys Island, where I got to see and make an original Pawleys Island hammock. I love the eclectic, fun feel of it with the local artists and jewelers you come across there. I’ve been able to travel all over the world, but it’s fun for me to have some things to bring back home that have a local feel. At the Hammock Shops, I got to learn about the Pawleys shell, and I like to have little pieces of the places where I get to visit and vacation. I have played golf all over the world, and playing in Myrtle Beach is really special because you can get a variety
of different types of golf courses. Going to River Club was great; it was different than the other courses

I’d been to on my last visit. I liked that it was a traditional golf course that didn’t have the different aspects of the saltwater marsh like Pawleys Plantation, and it was just a solid, tee-to-green design. River Club was in fantastic shape, and I’m looking forward to going back to play there again! Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club is one of my favorite courses – especially with the par-3 holes at 13 and 17, which are spectacular. Just to be able to experience two really tough signature holes in such a beautiful, native marsh setting

was an absolute treat. Jack Nicklaus gave the Grand Strand something really special when he designed Pawleys Plantation. Willbrook Plantation was another one of my favorite courses here in Myrtle Beach. Its Lowcountry feel is just so beautiful. Surrounded by moss-draped oaks and all the history of the old rice plantation there, I really felt like I was in another world while I enjoyed a relaxing golf experience.
What I love about Myrtle Beach is that it has everything that you would want in a vacation. You can play golf. You can go to the beach. There are great restaurants and shops, and plenty of other fun activities. It’s a complete destination vacation place to come to, and I encourage everyone to go check it out. I know they’ll love it as much as I do!
