Founders Club

This course has 18 unique holes, stunning visuals, as well as isolated teeing areas. It features wide, bowled-in fairways encircled with waste bunkering. Water comes into play on many of the holes, but aside from the epic carry on the 12th, can be avoided by most golfers. The greens are Emerald bermudagrass and the fairways are 419 Bermuda. Thomas Walker used elevated fairways and waste bunkers that run from tee to green in order to create contrast that appeals to the eye.

The bunkers do more than serve as a method of framing the fairways, the bunkers double as cart paths – the only pavement on the course surrounds the tees and greens – and combined with the elevated fairways, they also help provide Founders Club with excellent drainage. The result is carts riding the fairways 365 days per year. Guests come away with not only remembering their best shot, but every shot. River Club

River Club, a semi-private course, has proven Pawleys Island, SC to be one of the most challenging courses in the 11 Pine Circle Myrtle Beach area and features new Champion (866) 694-2456 Ultradwarf greens. This Tom Jackson signature PrimeTimeGolfDeals.com course is one of the premier “plantation” courses and a favorite among returning golfers. True to its Par: 72 Slope: 129 name, River Club features water on 15 of 18 holes, USGA Rating: 70.2 and over 50 sand traps and bunkers. Long hitters have some room off the tee, but approach shots Architect..............Tom Jackson need to be true. The dramatic par-5, 18th is unquestionably one of the finest finishing holes on the Grand Strand, a reachable par-5 with a peninsula fairway that, if reached successfully from the tee, leaves as little as a middle iron second shot to the green and an excellent eagle chance. . Landing areas are generous off the tee and over 60 large bunkers encourage strategic shot placement. Amoeba-shaped greens cause many approach shots to play appealingly different from one day to the next. Two of the 18 holes at the semi-private River Club are featured among “The 100 Greatest Holes Along the Grand Strand.” Awarded 4.5 Stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” in 2008.

Blackmoor

Blackmoor, Gary Player’s only Grand Strand sig- Murrells Inlet, SC nature course, is built on the historic site of Long- 6100 Longwood Drive wood Plantation, which parallels the Waccamaw (866) 694-2456 River. It provides many risk-reward Par: 72 Slope: 126 opportunities. It also gives you the option to USGA Rating: 70.1 play shots that you don’t normally play on most modern designs such as the bump and run. To Architect............. Gary Player play this course well, it’s important to understand the amount of risk that is out there on each hole, especially before you get too aggressive. This course is designed for golfers to hit every club in their bag. Many golfers use their drivers too often or their long irons in places where they could lay back and have a better chance for a low score, especially because the well-maintained greens at Blackmoor aren’t too undulating, and golfers can make putts from almost anywhere on the green. The best approach for this course is keeping your tee shots in between the tree lines and playing to the elbow of each dogleg. Play for accuracy and you will have a distinct advantage over everyone else in your group. When you couple the charm of this course with its truly hospitable staff and inviting facilities, Blackmoor becomes a “must-play” year after year. What’s Hot for 2014? Michelle Kempe, PGA, director of retail for National Golf Management (NGM) and the 2013 Carolinas PGA Section Public Merchandiser of the Year, checked in from the recent 2014 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla. to offer some insights on the hot trends in equipment and apparel. Here, she presents her top 5 selections in each of two major categories. Items are available for retail purchase at the golf shops of each of NGM’s 22 Prime Times Signature Courses, except where otherwise noted.

Top 5 Clubs, Bags and Accessories 1. TaylorMade SLDR Driver -

This year’s hot driver from TaylorMade, the SLDR was designed with a more forward center of gravity promoting a reduced spin rate and longer, more accurate ball flight. It has a 20 gram sliding weight in the sole of the club that can be set to 21 different positions to produce a draw or fade. The theme of their campaign is “Loft Up.” Since the COG has been moved forward, in order to gain maximum distance and accuracy, they are finding that the player must increase the loft of the club from what they are normally used to playing. For example, tour players, on average, are putting 10.5-degree drivers in their bags as opposed to 8.5-9-degree drivers. It is truly something you have not seen on tour before! Retail price: $399.00

yrtle Beach is home to more than 100 courses and attracts 500,000 golfers annually. Standing out amidst the game’s most popular and competitive market isn’t easy, but Legends Resort has long enjoyed a special place along the Grand Strand golf landscape. The Scottish inspired resort is home to three superb courses – Heathland, Moorland and Parkland –a worldclass practice facility, and of the area’s most recognizable brand names. Legends’ enduring popularity is rooted in its unwavering commitment to maximizing the value players receive. Every round of golf includes a hot breakfast and lunch and two draft beers, making Legends the most popular golf package destination – seriously – in America. Throw in renovated, onsite accommodations and the resort is better today than it was upon its 1991 opening. Loads of included value and first-rate accommodations are perfect perks, but golf is what people come for, and Legends, which launched the career of one of the game’s most respected architects, has delivered on that front as well.

Heathland #11

architecture stratosphere with the opening of Heathland, which is the 13th best layout in all of golf-rich South Carolina, according to Golf Magazine. Fairways wider than Myrtle’s expansive beaches encourage players to pound the driver at Heathland, but greenside pot bunkers can devour dreams of par and some of the largest putting surfaces in the area demand a precision iron game. The beauty of Heathland lies in the number of ways players can play the course. Open greens allow players to run the ball up, providing room for creativity that many modern designs lack. But the wispy heather grass that lines the undulating fairways must be avoided. The fairways on the Moorland course are nearly as wide (Lesson No. 1: make sure you are ready to hit driver at Legends!), but the layout is considerably different. Architect P.B. Dye used waste bunkers, elevation change and water to craft a course that is both visually stunning and fun to play. Moorland has a reputation for being difficult – Golf Digest rated it as America’s 37th hardest course – but

don’t be dissuaded by media hype. The layout is challenging, no doubt, but there is a lot of beauty and playability in this beast. There is no housing on the course, leaving golfers to enjoy Dye’s work and nature. A 4.5-star design, Moorland gives players a chance to score, provided they play smart.

await. It’s the type of hole you could play all day. Great as the 16th is, it’s arguably not the best short par 4 on the property. That distinction may belong to the ninth hole on the Parkland course. Playing 308 yards from the white tees, Parkland’s ninth isn’t reachable for everyone but it’s no less fun to play.

Intelligent golf often means playing to the middle of the course’s greens, which are always pristine and encompass a total of 4.2 acres of putting surface (Lesson No. 2: work on your lag putting on Legends’ one acre practice putting green). One hole where playing “smart” isn’t an option is the 313-yard, par 4 16th, otherwise known as Hell’s Half Acre. You could layup in the fairway, but let’s be real: it’s a reachable par 4 and you aren’t taking a golf vacation to play like a group of senior ladies in a Tuesday league match. You are going for the green – it’s only 223 yards from the white tees – and a possible eagle. If you make it, glory awaits. If you miss, an assortment of pot bunkers, waste areas, grass bunkers and pampas grass

Parkland #11

Parkland, as its name suggests, is a more traditional design, featuring tree-lined fairways and more than 100 bunkers. While Moorland has the reputation for being difficult, veterans at Legends will tell you that Parkland is the most challenging of the three layouts. A 4-star course, Parkland is the perfect complement to Heathland and Moorland, providing the diversity of challenge that players crave on a golf trip. Legends Golf Resort is nirvana for traveling golfers. Three outstanding courses, an unrivaled practice facility, restaurants and on-site accommodations are all located within a Dustin Johnson drive of each other.

he most humbling and human of all sporting pursuits, golf, teaches us patience, honesty, integrity, and persistence. Throughout the course of every round, we recognize the fleeting nature of success and the constant hard work required to sustain it. We learn to brush off disappointment, while vowing to do better the next time. We learn that we’re vulnerable to mistakes. We learn to project humility when victorious and to be gracious in defeat; each one a worthwhile trait our dads try to instill in us as we come of age.

Each year in July, fathers and sons from around the world gather in Myrtle Beach to take part in a three-day tournament that has become the largest father-son golf event in the world. This year the National Father and Son Team Classic will be hosted by eight course along the Grand Strand, including Indian Wells Golf Club. What courses are our reviewers telling us are “hot” entering the 2014 spring season? The ones atop their leaderboard should come as no surprise, as South Strand gems Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, True Blue Plantation and Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club – along with prominent neighbors King’s North at Myrtle Beach National and the Dye Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf to the north – have for many years been “go-to” names in visiting golfers’ itineraries. But of particular note are the two courses that cracked the top 5 of the spring 2014 Golf Insider “Hot List,” Dunes Golf & Beach Club and Resort Club at Grande Dunes, that will co-host the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship in June. If the feedback we’re getting from recent Golf Insider reviewers is any indication, each of these stellar designs is primed and ready to provide a stellar spring golf experience for the pros and recreational golfers alike.

Dunes Golf & Beach Club (9.0) Clay (Lewis Center, OH) Played November 2013: “What a great facility, top notch all the way. Over-seeding was the only drawback, but this was expected. ivers Edge has been described as one of the most scenic courses along the Grand Strand. The natural beauty of this Arnold Palmer design is a favorite among Myrtle Beach golfers and the game’s elite. Located between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, Rivers Edge is the perfect course to schedule the first or last round of your golf vacation, particularly for those traveling from the north to the Grand Strand. Consistently ranked among North Carolina’s best layouts, it does not take long to see why. From the fifth tee box you will be amazed by the views of the Shallotte River and surrounding marshland. This type of layout does not come without its challenges. Water from the salty river has been known to affect the irrigation making it difficult to maintain the greens. Management chose to eliminate any inconsistency in the layout’s greens’ by installing Seadwarf Pasplaum grass. Paspalum has a high tolerance for sodium, making it ideal for a layout drawing water from the saltmarsh.

this to be too intimidating, the fairways are fairly generous, just be mindful of the rough. The rough often comes in the form of sawgrass. For those that do not boast a strong drive, Rivers Edge is perfect for players not looking to overextend themselves. With smaller greens, an accurate approach is a must. Once on the dance floor, extreme undulations are not a concern but with subtle breaks, speed can be a huge factor. Offering an excellent practice facility and a clubhouse that overlooks the 9th and 18th greens, it is an ideal setting for lunch or post round snack.

The Lesson Tee

The Grip is Your Foundation Jeff Diehl, PGA Head Golf Professional The Dye Club

H

olding the handle correctly is your foundation to a solid golf swing. Like the foundation of a house....if it’s off the slightest bit then the doors and windows won’t shut right and the roof will probably leak. All great players have good hands, and that’s why it’s so crucial to develop a proper grip. First, should you use an interlocking or overlapping grip? Someone with large hands probably should use an overlapping grip. Small hands, an interlocking grip. Overlapping

Interlocking

Next, comes grip balance within the confines of each hand. The weight of the shaft should be balanced so you always have control throughout the swing. Another important element is the position of your left thumb on the shaft. Players who extend their thumbs hit the ball high and straight. Those who shorten the length of the thumb are likely to hit the ball low and left. These are all preferences that you need to figure out on your own but are essential to building a solid golf swing. Shortened

Extended

Grip pressure is another checkpoint and one of the most critical. 75 percent of all my students came to me holding the handle way too tight. Try holding the club as tightly as you can, then hold it loosely. The correct pressure is somewhere in between. Finally, see how many knuckles are showing on your left hand. If you see most of them, you’ll likely hit a hook or draw. Fewer, and the ball will go high and right. The standard would be to see two knuckles when you look at your left hand at address. Look down with your eyes only... don’t move your head to look. Experiment with these basics and you’ll find a grip that’s best for your hands. Hook or Draw

Johnny D’s owner, John Daskalis, has been a restaurateur for more than 30 years, he also owns Coney Island restaurant near Conway. Johnny D’s is located in the former Nibils Restaurant, which relocated to the current site in 2011. Daskalis’ daughter, Jamie Saunders, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, is the executive chef. Specializing in baking, she’ll oversee prep work, baked goods and desserts. But don’t be surprised to see Jamie in the front of the house greeting customers while her husband Michael, oversees the cook line in the kitchen. When Johnny Daskalis bought Nibil’s, he also bought the right to use their signature recipes. The lengthy menu includes many Nibil’s specialties including seafood salad, crab cake sandwich, sea scallops, as well as crab cake Benedict and seafood omelet made with shrimp, crab, Swiss cheese. New specialties have also been added to the expanded menu. Chef Jamie emphasizes fresh food, from handbreaded chicken tenders and fried green beans to homemade salad dressings, salsa and southwest eggrolls

.Huevos Rancheros

Breakfast is a culinary treat with luscious thick homemade waffles in flavors like red velvet and cinnamon roll drizzled with cream cheese icing, and homemade Challah bread French toast, dipped in vanilla custard topped with icing and strawberry compote. Breakfast choices include pound cake French toast; Johnny D’s skillet with scrambled eggs, hot Italian sausage, peppers, onions, shredded cheese, home fries and an English muffin. Lunch guests will see a dish that will be familiar to natives of New York or New Jersey, “disco fries.” These crispy fries are topped with melted mozzarella and brown gravy. There are portabello mushrooms stuffed with jumbo lump crab meat, several sandwiches like country ham and corned beef and wraps including chipotle chicken; and triple decker club sandwiches.

Also, specializing in custom cakes and baked goods, don’t miss the chance to try one of Chef Jamie’s many flavors of creamy cheesecakes, from keylime to chocolate, and mini cupcakes topped with light and airy frosting. Keep It In The

Fa i r w a y Robert Harper, PGA

Past President of the Carolinas PGA

F

or many South Carolina residents, golf is more than a weekend activity, league play or something we look forward to upon retirement. Golf plays a significant role in the lives of hundreds of residents because it is the source of their livelihood; some aspect of golf is their job and personal income. From a historical perspective, in 1786 Charleston, South Carolina became the home to the first golf course ever built in America. Today, there are more than 350 golf courses around the state in settings that vary from views of the ocean, creeks, marshes, rivers and mountains. Golf Digest even ranks South Carolina among the nation’s top golf destinations. Financially, golf generates more income than any other single entertainment or recreational activity in South Carolina. When you take into consideration almost $3 billion in sales which creates approximately 35,000 jobs, you can understand why employees in the golf business account for almost $800 million in personal income. For the state of South Carolina, green fees and club membership dues generate more than one third of state admissions tax collections. South Carolina can also boast that it is home to two regions – Myrtle Beach and

94

Hilton Head - ranking among the top 10 golf travel markets. In fact, for all travel regions (except the west coast) Myrtle Beach ranks higher on a national scale than other popular areas like Orlando, FL; Pinehurst, NC or Las Vegas, NV. Although golf packages, member rounds and daily fees remain the core source of revenue for golf facilities, tournament operations are a relative strength for the overall success of any golf facility. Tournament operations reflect almost 25% of total golf rounds. Specifically for Myrtle Beach, the Father & Son Team Classic and the Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday World Amateur attract more than 5,000 players each year and utilize more than 50+ golf courses, which contribute to their sales, productivity and success. For example, the economic impact from these golf tournaments contributes greatly to the individual golf courses and the Grand Strand as a whole. The Father & Son Team Classic can account for more than $4.5 million and 160 jobs. Additionally, the World Am contributes an additional $7.2 million and 200 jobs. As a resident of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and one who depends on the golf industry as a means of personal welfare, I extend a hand of gratitude to you, our visiting guests and local players. For those who choose our state and, particularly, the Myrtle Beach area as your golf destination of choice, you are the ones who allow this discretionary luxury to hold strong and continue to positively impact the personal lives of thousands of homes and families.
