abouttheCOVER ‘Greening CHMSC’ is one among the biggest projects of the college in 2012, under administration of Pres. Renato M. Sorolla, aiming to make the college a green-oriented institution. As cool and as refreshing as the green concept of CHMSC’s recently implemented project, the revival of Lab School’s official publication opts to give the Lab Schoolers a breath of fresh air. With the fast-emerging changes in our college, The Junior Technopacer introduces to all, one of Lab School’s newest icons, Lab Skuleo; who, being a mighty lion, is competitive, alert, courageous, and strong, just as every Lab Schooler is.

“Education is the most powerful weapon one must have to change the world,” as quoted by Nelson Mandela. Most of us study hard at school to get good grades, then have a prosperous life. Education, from the word educate, means learning. Learning has three branches: learn, relearn, and unlearn. Like in reading a book, you’re given an hour to read a five-inch book. Well, it isn’t enough. Just to finish reading the book, we skip pages, absent-read or reading without understanding, or even find a summary of it. That’s not a healthy manner of learning. Because of doing so, we don’t fully understand things. Maya Angelou said that “When you know better, you do better.” This is where K+12 Education System enters. From ten years, after kindergarten, Philippines goes to 12 years. Doing better in drawing needs more time; thus, in education. The longer the time we have, the more we understand. It is truly because we have enough time to do the effort of full understanding. In this way of schooling, we’ll do well because we’ll get to have longer time to adjust in understanding, and this will eradicate the act of having a “hectic schedule”. In a foreign country, they start classes at 9:30am and ends at 3pm. As you can see, they’ll have much time for sleep and study. There are currently in K-12 curriculum. If we’ll have this class schedule, too, we wouldn’t be like zombies anymore. Because of having additional two years in secondary level, we get to have the chance to study in advance some of the subjects for college. Imagine how this new process would start. Otherwise to what I’ve been telling about, Tas, a grade seven student, lost his interest in schooling. This was after knowing he would have additional two years in high school. Well, he was a smart kid, but now, he starts to become lazy and irresponsible at school. It’s been his hobby to express his feelings by means of writing them in his blog. But now, due to the Republic Act No. 10175, also known as the Cyber Crime Prevention Act of 2012, he couldn’t do it anymore. He’s bothered by the thought that if he wrote something wrong, before knowing he did, he might get into a big trouble. Another thing is, he’s living far away from his school. Tas needs to travel 44.7 kilometers to get home. He always go home late and he only has limited hours of study. He has his chores and projects to work on. He’s planning to download tutorials online but he can’t because it will be a form of plagiarism. By downloading it, he could get to watch it without having his broadband credited for use. It will help him save money. He also needs to have a report about a certain topic. He surfed the net and found the best article. It was perfect, but he couldn’t copy it because the site doesn’t allow “copy-paste” method, instead he needed to download it. Again, he’s worried about the same issue – plagiarism. The Cyber Crime Prevention Act of 2012 obviously limits our freedom to speech. Speech, in the sense, doesn’t only mean to speak and be heard by making a sound. It can be otherwise because written language is more effective and soothing than spoken one. We have lots of things to research for school and we used to copy, paste, and print. Therefore, the Cyber Crime Prevention Act must be revised or amended so that people would consider it fully beneficial.

EDITOR’S NOTE Let us welcome with our warmest support and appreciation one of the newest members of our CHMSC family, Lab Skuleo, who from now on will be Lab School’s official mascot. Though last year’s attempt of reviving The Junior Technopacer ended up as what everybody never wanted and expected, here we are again as we come back with scorching redemption. Striving to make this resurgence worth the entire wait after all those years wasn’t merely a simple game of writing articles and taking of photos; especially for all the editors, as we had days and nights of information-verifications and series of editing with some scattered papers around us, just aiming to make one among the Laboratory School’s best products of creativity and talent in the world of publication. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the experience of holding such responsibility with all our dear companions. We owe our advisers and all the people who helped us in one way or another all throughout the process, especially for the non-member contributors who sent us their works for the literary page. Moreover, we would like to give special thanks to Ginoe C. Ojoy who selflessly lent us his helping hand and assisted us with the layout of this year’s issue of our official magazine. The long wait is over… …The Junior Technopacer in its renaissance has finally arrived.

We always see ladies, who carry charismatic smiles, chic appearances, undeniable intellect, unique talents, and that ‘I-want-to-be-a-titlist’ attitude, do their elegant walks on-stage. Most of the time, we see them compete in televisions, aired worldwide. When the breeze of September comes whooshing, all the sweet characteristics of all females mentioned are exuded during Talisay City’s Miss Teen Minulu-an. Here at CHMSC Lab School, a humble student of fourth year class had the opportunity to show these off in such competition. A girl who had always been seen dancing with her groupmates and ramping in every beauty searches in CHMSC, where she’d won several titles, Blessie Joy Escamilla, shares, “Mrs. Donesa, our class adviser, asked me to join the Miss Teen Minulu-an. Later on, she asked permission from my Mama Susana who readily agreed.” The YES of Blessie’s family and friends, who supported her all the way, pushed her to accept the challenge of representing the whole Zone-2 community in the said competition. She underwent and passed the screening at the New Talisay City Hall and had the chance to learn and bond as well with her co-candidates in various activities they joined in. “We attended the workshop where we were taught how to enhance our skills and confidence on-stage and how to apply make-up. We went to Bantud, Brgy. Concepcion for our tree-planting activity and ABS-CBN studio for our KWK guesting,” Blessie said. Staying late at night and waking up early in the morning were nothing but a few of Blessie’s preparations. She recalled, “I always practice my talent with Gerardo Rojas and if I have my free time, I read facts about Talisay City.” She really had a hard time on balancing her schedule since she was also attending her classes. But then, she managed it successfully, and that made her bring the three major awards in the pageant night. “I won as Best in Terno Attire, Camping Gear Attire, and Festival Costume.” As expected, all the people in Zone-2, including the CHMSC, Lab. School, hoped that Blessie would bring the crown home. Unluckily, she failed to win the title. She lost in the competition but no one dared to blame her because what’s more important was that she had victoriously shared to all the Talisaynons what she’d got: her incomparable talent, strong dedication, and pleasant personality. She might not be the crowned one, she will still be the best for she had developed something in her and had remained thankful and humble which made her a changed woman. “To all of my supporters, my ever-supporting family, and friends, thank you so much. Sa pulaw niyo… Indi ko ni mahimu kung wala ang bulig niyo. Thank you gid and may God blesses you all!” In every competition, there will always be losers but our very own Blessie Joy Escamilla was simply and will always be an exception. She deserves a bow for being a pride of CHMSC. - tin_tul-id

CHMSC-Laboratory School Excels Showing great excellence in the field of academics, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College Laboratory School was consecutively awarded in three years by the University of St. La Salle as one of the Best Performing School in Negros Occidental. Being ranked 2nd in Academic Year 2009-2010, CHMSC Laboratory School slid down a few spots from the top when it ranked 4th in the Academic Year 2010-2011 but climbed its way back on top again in the year 2011-2012, having the honor of being ranked 1st among the other schools in the province. - kj_buenaflor

Speech & Drama Club’s play for a cause

Cute little angels in their humble yet attractive getups owned the whole stage as their playground when the Speech and Drama Club, under the advisory of Ms. Vanezza T. Laza, showcased their talents in role-playing during a schoolwide stage play, held for a cause. Giving life to the characters of Lynx, Fox, Dogfish, Bear, Pike, Wolf, Mouse, and Wolverine, these young little pupils, though still raw in terms of age, never failed to offer the audience a candid representation of a famous Canadian folklore, entitled The Long Winter. The play had two parts: the first one being done between 2:30 and 3:00pm; and the second, which started soon after the previous and ended by 3:30pm at the Lab School viewing room. In search of heat for their freezing region down under the lower hemisphere of the earth, the characters found not just the heat to thaw their frozen land but also the heat of love for the needing as the proceeds of their activity went to Compostela Valley victims. The club officers, themselves, lent their selfless help to Bantay Bata on the 17th of December, last year, right after celebrating Lab School’s Christmas party. - rauljr_tuzon

The Freshmen Sphinx proved that “age doesn’t matter” as they topped over their three elder contenders during the Laboratory School’s first ever Cheer Dance Competition. The Freshmen Sphinx, Sophomore Thunders, Junior Incredibulls, and Supreme Seniors Centaurs, in their green, yellow, red, and blue jersey suits, respectively, participated in the said competition, bringing their different themes, styles, highlights, and stunts on the dance floor. Next to the Freshmen Sphinx in the ranking was their eldest competitor: the Supreme Seniors Centaurs. In the other hand, Sophomore Thunders got 3rd place and the last but not the least, the Junior Incredibulls. Still fresh from their victory, the Sphinx couldn’t believe what they had achieved as what one of their members quoted, “Naspeechless gid ko ya!” Mrs. Cabadon, their adviser, said with a smile, “Happy gid ko ya kag proud sa ila” when asked about the result of the competition. - tin_tul-id

Having everything they have in pink from their T-shirts they wore to their props and banner, the Pink Team got the title as the first-ever champion of the 2012-2012 Mass Dance Competition, Elementary Level. Composed of combined students from Grades 1 to 6, Pink Team performed a clean dance that made them win over its two other competitors: the Violet Team which ranked next to them, and the Orange Team, which ranked 3rd. - tin_tul-id

Interview: “What can you say about the experience you had during the ESS Tree Planting?” Hyacinth Garcia: “Base sa experience. Sadya kag nami sa feeling. Haha. Kahit papano, makabulig ka maski sa gamay lang nga bagay ang pag tanum puno. Ara bala nga mahambal mo sa kaugalingon mo nga excited kana makita magdako imo nga gintanom nga puno.” Ylric Marc Jalando-on: “Sadya sadya gid kaayo!!!” Camille Cachero: “Sadya… damo na experience magtanom puno! Hahaha” Theresse Santarin: “Hmmm. No words can explain how much I enjoyed the tree planting. Haha. Kanami sang pag-welcome sang nag guide kag nagbulig samon para maging successful ang Tree Planting. Pero one thing, tani dason mabitbit na pagkaon para sa mga bata kay kaluoy man nga ga tree planting ta kag gapakasadya pero sila ara sa higad, gapangita pagkaon. Christmas na daan. Haha. Basta great experience kay last year na namon sng seniors nga ESS kag first time namon magkadto sa Bantud.” Reggie Anne Abellar: “Brgy. Bantud was just the right place to plant some trees. When I saw the place, because it’s my first time to go there, I was really amazed. It’s so peaceful and the workers there welcomed us warmly. They introduced the place and lead us to the site where we’ll plant mahoganies. I just came up to think that we selected the right place to plant those little mahoganies. I know that they’ll never abandon those because I saw how they really cared for the environment. It was such a great honor to be part of the ESS Tree Planting activity because somehow, I contributed in saving Mother Earth through planting trees.”

Four among the seniors’ contenders surpassed this year’s battle of the brains during CHMSC Laboratory School’s first ever Quiz Bowl which was held as an academic event of the annual Intramural Meet. Eight teams competed for victory, each of which was composed of four members. Every year level had two teams to represent their class but only one group would be declared as the champion of the match. The group of Raul Tuzon JR, Edward Diva, Renzo Hisona, and Booker John Capadocia JR reigned supreme with their wit and teamwork. “The match was quite hard since most of the teams were really competitive; nonetheless, I had much fun,” one participant said. - josh_guanco & bea_cordero

Before the 2012 Intramurals finally rolled its curtain, the Unit I had once again bagged this year’s championship title for earning a total of 391 points, edging the opposing unit (Unit II) by only 6. The champion earned its winning points from the indoor games (Badminton and Table Tennis) by having a total of 35 points against the Unit II’s 26. Meanwhile, Unit II, finishing only as second place in this year’s competition, somehow proved themselves as tough contenders after earning a massive 140 points on the Track and Field events, showing a comfortable win against this year’s title holder who only scored 102 points. Bringing home the title of Most Valuable Player in their respective sports were Glenmar Señeres and Justine Gumacal for Basketball; Jose Ian Godfrey Tavera and Abigail Dubduban for Volleyball; Maurex Nicole Dinaga and Carmela Gaviola for Tchoukball; Alther Ray Dioso and Chelo Marie Hodges for Football. - micko_alminiana

Was it a one-to-one function? Or maybe a many-to-one? It could also be a relation; What a problem to ponder upon. So we strived to find a solution, We made a table and a graph; We used function notations And also arrow maps. We also used an equation Where we used f(x) But the equation wasn’t satisfied Everyone’s head was in a mess! Suddenly the teacher spoke out While everyone was in a haze, “Class there’s an error with the relation; Proceed to number eight.”

THE WELL OF LIFE by Ma. Isabel B. Nacionales Once upon a time in a faraway island, there was a small well which was the only source of drinking water of the people living there. It never got dry and its water tasted so sweet. All the people were healthy because of the water from that well. Every night when the people were asleep, tiny dwarfs would come out of the well. They water all the trees in the forest and all the crops in the island. Before morning, they would be done with their work and would just disappear into the well. The trees in the forest became bigger and taller, while the people always plentiful harvest. One day, a big ship came to the island. The big men in the ship noticed the big tall trees and so they approached the people offering them a big sum of money in exchange for the trees that they would cut and bring home with them. The people agreed, and the big men immediately brought out their powerful equipment and started cutting the trees as fast as they could. That night when the tiny dwarfs came out of the well, they saw the many fallen trees. They became angry and instead of watering the crops as they usually do, they sprinkled magic dust which made the crops dry and useless. When the people woke up the next morning, they saw what happened to their crops, and they wondered why. They went to the well to drink and discovered that the water did not taste good anymore. Then there came an old woman who was a stranger in the island. She told them that they were being punished by the tiny dwarfs of the well because they allowed the big men to cut the trees. The people were sorry for what they have done and so when the big men returned to cut more trees, they told them to go away. The big men became mad and attacked the people. The people fought back and threw stones at them. The tiny dwarfs saw what the people had done and helped them to win over the big men. The big men hurriedly packed their things and sailed away. Using the money given to them by the big men, the people bought seedlings from a nearby island and replanted the forest. This made the tiny dwarfs happy; and so one night, they used their magic water to help the trees grow faster and the crops to produce good harvest again. BULLYING

B

‘ ullying is childish and having days and nights of brainstorming to resolve it is simply stupidity!’ That’s what others may say, not excluding those who believe that they are never concerned with such social issue. The fear of being bullied is responsible for the 15 percent of all students who do not show up to school. Furthermore, there are 71 percent of students that report bullying as an on-going problem. Along that same vein, about one out of 10 students drops out or changes schools because of repeated bullying. (www. bullyingstatistics.org) Whether you’re a bully or the one being bullied or let’s just say you’re none of the above, such matter like bullying is something to pay attention to or at least to recognize because it has been a perfect example of what we consider a silent yet widespread problem in our society today; thus affecting anyone of us in one way or another. Many groups and organizations all over the world have been endlessly fighting against bullying, one of which is where I am currently a member of. Their efforts to solve the issue and rescue the victims of bullying are undoubtedly evident with all their activities regarding their goals and visions. Notwithstanding this, bullying seems to be unstoppable and persistent. What then is the key to the solution of this problem? Aren’t the organizations and

the tactics made by the government enough to eradicate the bullies and finally put an end to the never-ending cases of bullying featured in televisions, radios, social networking sites and blogs? We should understand that bullying follows a give-and-take process; just as lying or trickery. No liar will ever exist if no one will ever tolerate others to trick him. Bullies may be the one who holds superiority but the other party or the one being bullied still has all the reason and power to fight back, not in a violent or unlawful way, but by asking for a sufficient help from the ones whom they know can help them to survive the challenge and fear brought by being bullied. Bullycide is one interesting product of bullying. There is a strong connection between bullying, being bullied, and suicide according to a new study from the Yale University. Obviously, a large part of the bully victims feel a common feeling of shame of sharing their not-so-nice experiences, making them decide to hide the hurting with themselves which sometimes leads to this so-called bullycide. We cannot always blame the parents after all, because even from them, other bully victims tend to keep their problems which are supposed to be paid attention with. What then can the parents or the teachers do to prevent their children from being engaged in bullying? For me, trust, understanding, and open communication leads to a harmonious living within a home or a classroom. Children, who are commonly the ones being engaged in bullying, are actually easy to please once

you’ve gained their trust in sharing their experiences, problems, and anxieties with you. It is noticeable that most of the cases of bullying happen in schools where there are large numbers of students, as we may realize that teachers of such schools cannot manage to get close enough with all their students. Don’t take it wrong that I am defending the side of the bully and putting all the blame to the victim for being so weak and for not telling what is happening with him. Bullies are definitely not the good ones because it is them who are doing evil to their fellows. Bullies want superiority. They demand power over their peers. They want to be frightened of by the public. Sometimes, they just want attention, trying to show off what they’ve got. What they don’t understand is that they’re making a fool out of them for violence should not be the sole basis of man’s trust in overcoming challenges, failures, or insecurities. Bullies enjoy seeing crybabies and the more you cry or get pissed off with these hobgoblins, all the more that they’ll make fun of you. Children, due to their young age, may not have the proper thinking to cope up with the problems brought about by bullying, unless being guided by the parents, guardians, teachers, and counselors.

arcasm had been a part of our daily life. It’s our natural weapon against stupidity. Like, if your car is stuck in the mud and someone came near to ask, “Is your car stuck in the mud?” Well, instead of saying, “Are you blind” or “Can’t you see” or other words that might offend or embarrass him, we tend to make a sarcastic answer: “No, no, of course not! I’m only practicing how to spray mud using my tires.” Sarcasm is a witty language used to convey insults or scorn without looking rude. It is often an ironic remark intended to wound a person but still has the best comedic value.

It had been common that if we want to insult a person by looking like much of a joker and not a mean one, we use sarcasm. For instance, Jana lives in a world where no one thinks she’s pretty enough. People would say, “I am busy right now, so can I ignore your face some other time?” Well, she will laugh because it’s a form of a joke and lighter to feel than being insulted directly. “I feel so miserable without you coz it’s almost like having you here.” She will laugh again. “If you find it hard to laugh at yourself, I would be happy to do it for you.” Perhaps she’ll just smile. “I never forgot a face, but in your case, I’ll be glad to make an exception.” “Mirrors can’t talk; lucky for you, they can’t laugh either.” “I’ve had a perfectly wonderful night, but this wasn’t like it.” “I would have an excellent time if you go missing.” She can still smile but it’ll give her a sharp pain inside her. You wouldn’t know how upset she had been when people told her those jokes. Yes, those are jokes and it works to make people happy which it did. The question is, “Is everyone happy?” What about Jana? What about her Mom and Dad? What would you feel when you were in her shoes? You don’t need to step on a person to make people happy. Sarcasm had been much influencing. Lots of people do it because it’s fun. Some do it for popularity. Some do it to look cool – better than a hipster. Actually, the true meaning of sarcasm is to make a person happy instead of telling him how much of being and idiot he had been. Sarcasm is used to make a person laugh instead of being dismayed. Before, sarcasm is a means of insulting people without them realizing it, which is a better way of mocking people. At first it was good. It was of much help. But nowadays, I don’t think so. Sarcasm has been a form of bullying than a form of joke. It had been worse than stereotypes. Note: (You) Please keep talking. I always yawn when I’m interested. <teehee>

houldn’t it be Wi-Fi (Wireless -Fidelity) and not Waay-Fi (Waay-Fidelity)? Seriously, trying to connect with Wi-Fi in this campus is like doing a broadband advertisement with a theme, ‘Slow Internet Connec-tion.’ What’s the use of being a Wi-Fi zone if the campus is already in Waay-Fidelity state? It is a bit rough for students and teachers who really need internet, most of the time, to finish certain tasks? After all, there is but a financial differ-ence in using Wi-Fi here than internet cafés. Putting up modems and routers will do no good if things won’t just work out… “AND YOU KNOW WHAT I’M SAYING.” It would be better if there‘s someone who would check the routers and modem all over the campus once in a while if they have gone crappy, broken or if they are still working well. All I’m saying is that, if the modems were turned on, one should check the Wi-Fi’s state; if it is connected, not connected or in of-fline mode. After all, it’s a waste of good money if you’re just going to turn the modems and routers on without knowing if something has gone wrong. It’s just that, the campus is paying for internet connection and allowing Wi-Fi to keep on in crappy state would really just be a waste. Another, the payment for internet is already decided and would never change even if no one would use the net. I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints lately from Adams and Eves out there saying, “Nano mani man wala naman internet. May WiFi man, wala lang gid ya galing naka-connect sa

net…” Here’s more, wherever I roam inside the campus I always find myself hearing com-plaints that are even worse than what’s written here like: p@#$ this connection ,&*&*^ , and*&%$$!. But oops, sorry, I’ve gotta cut the crap ‘cause it might complicate things more. Surfing the net is irritating especially when internet connectivity is low. It even makes you go out of your own senses when it drops down to OFFLINE MODE. It whacks the PAGE LOAD ERROR out of you so your SERVER would NOT be FOUND. You’ll run out of WEBPAGES and poof! NOT AVAILABLE. Surfing the net in low connectivity state will be like this: PPPPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEE AAAAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVVVVVVOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDDDD TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS MMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEE. Irritating isn’t it? But surfing the net with no connectivity state will be like ………….. crrck-crrrck-crrriiickk, BANG! There’s not even a connection to begin with. Come to think of it, I also experienced it; not once but many times. Not just low net connection but also no net connection. I always thought that it’d better to surrender, but I haven’t given up my flag yet. To tell you the truth, there were many bad

instances happened to me back then: One time, I was downloading some video, a musicale, for our opera for PEHM. I was in a hurry back then so I gotta fasten things up. I was in the peek of my success but it just turned out that luck isn’t on my side. The connection just turned offline. I don’t know what to do. I thought that I only have two op-tions. To do it again or to freak out. Another time, I was on my way home but I want to take a little detour. I decided to stop by in the canteen. I figured out that there still was work for me to do. I opened my laptop thinking that there’s connection. I con-nected using Wi-Fi and it did have connection. But on second thought it didn’t even reached the net. So again, goodbye cruel world for me. Some time this year, I have to patch things up for my project. At first ‘twas fast but as I continue, the situation had gotten worse so I was forced to go home. The fact is, many people, including me, rely on internet for in-formation and comfort it gives. It might not be much, but it’s enough to complete many tasks a day. Doing projects, having detailed infor-mation for your presen-tation, doing research, having friends and fol-lowers, downloading videos and the like would mean both pas-time and living. My point is, I’m just concerned in what is happening so I wrote this.
