Voice Portraits

An exhibition of poets’ voices turned into spectrograms

I believe poets’ voices must be preserved and this is why I created a library of voices on a map: The Poetry Sound Library. Voice is unique. When we speak we leave an aerial and indelible footprint in the world around us. By preserving the voice, we preserve the uniqueness of each one of us. The series “Voice Portraits” is a collection of poets’ voices turned into spectrograms and art. A spectrogram, or sonogram, is a visual representation of the spectrum of frequencies in a sound. Spectrograms are sometimes called spectral waterfalls, voiceprints, or voicegrams. Spectrograms can be used to identify spoken words phonetically, and to analyse the various calls of animals. The “Voice Portraits” collection is a series of spectrograms of poets from the past, living authors and local poets. You can listen to the poems on the Poetry Sound Library and enjoy the unicity of the voice portraits while visiting the exhibition.
