The Magic Flute Thur 11th September, 7.30pm Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre, Sale

THE Magic Flute sees Mozart’s imagination runs wild in a theatrical playground on the path to enlightenment, brought to life with spellbinding costumes and effects from Julie Taymor, director of Broadway sensation Disney’s The Lion King. Presented by Gippsland Regional Arts Society, the Opera Australia Oz Opera production is truly enchanting. This new, fully-staged show

complete with fabulous 1930s costumes, a chamber orchestra and a vibrant cast of singers portrays a ripping yarn for the whole family. The ancient tombs of the Pharaohs hide many secrets. Will Tamino the daring archaeologist find them? Will it be Papageno, the zany ornithologist? Or will the forces of evil crack the code, find the treasure and get the girl? If in danger, just follow the sound of the flute. No, it’s not Disney – this is opera! The production will be sung in English, children are encouraged to come along.

Tickets Cost: Adult $59.00 Senior $55.00 Concession $51.00 Member $49.00 Group $49.00 Child $35.00

But Wait... There’s More Fri, 29th August, 7.30pm Sat, 30th August, 1pm & 7.30pm West Gippsland Arts Centre, Cnr Smith & Albert Streets, Warragul

FOLLOWING an action-packed national tour crossing Arnhem Land, a Sydney Big Top season, then a smash-hit international tour across America to Montreal, Circus Oz rockets into Warragul with their brand spanking new show, ‘But Wait…There’s More’. Cooked up in their custom-built secret circus laboratory in the heart of Collingwood, Melbourne, and performed within a spectacular largescale set inspired by an abandoned

theatre in tatters, But Wait…There’s More will be a punchy, exciting and funny vaudeville-inspired show for humans of all ages. With an astonishing mix of stuntjumping acrobatics, cutting-edge juggling, virtuosic unicycling, elegant flying trapeze, the exciting Rou Cyr rim, cheeky impersonations, ridiculous knockabout and multiskilled human physical exuberance, But Wait…There’s More uses circus to satirise the rising tide of information, speed, consumerism, visual pollution, television, the ‘net and today’s manic fast-paced lifestyles. All of this is entwined within original music

performed by Circus Oz’s live and physically acrobatic band. Circus Oz was founded in 1978 as an amalgamation of two already successful Australian groups, Soapbox Circus and the New Circus. The principles that were the heart of the original Circus Oz philosophy are still reflected in their performances today: collective ownership and creation, gender equity, a uniquely Australian signature and team-work. Circus Oz shows are co-created from the inspiration, ideas and energy derived from the unique skills of each member of the extremely diverse ensemble that are then woven into the core concept of the show like layers of a collage. For 2014 an extensive casting process was undertaken across Australia’s vibrant circus community looking for recruits to add to the Circus Oz ensemble,

structured around an equal number of men and women with various backgrounds, skills and bodies. Eight new performers are making their Circus Oz debut in 2014, joining four returning Circus Oz artists. “With so many new artists joining

our ensemble, we are excited about the explosion of ideas and creativity that will emerge through the collaborative process” explained Mike Finch, Circus Oz Artistic Director. It’s a fabulous show that will keep the whole family mesmerised.

z Lakes Fishing Report... ROSS, our Gippsland Lakes Fish Whisperer, tells us its pretty quiet down their way at this time of year but the locals can still take advantage of some good fishing spots.

Apparently the Post Office Jetty is providing Trevally, Luderick and Bream and the unnamed jetty next to Ferrymans is producing Mullet catches. Anglers in Lake Tyers are landing some nice sized Bream at 39cm and the Eastern Beach is still good for Salmon.

Lake Tyers: Top end of the Nowa Nowa Arm is producing good size flatties, taking prawn. Bream from Black Snake Bight up to Devil’s Hole, using lures and soft plastics for best results. Surf for Salmon on pilchard.

Mitchell River: Local prawn, worm and spider crab are best baits for Bream and Mullet from the “The Cut” at Eagle Point and up to Eastwood Bridge, plus the backwaters are worth a look.

More Fishing Reports from the Lakes Entrance Visitor Information Centre Published by www.lakesentrance.com Lakes Entrance: The Slipway’s jetty is producing Trevally, bait of choice being small pieces of blue bait. Ferryman’s jetty for Luderick and Bream, best bait is weed and prawn. Bunga and Eastern Beaches for Salmon on poppers and pilchard. Offshore for Pinkies and Morwong on pilchards.

Tambo River: From the power lines, rough road and Punt House Point for Bream. Bait of choice being spider crab, local and cured worm.

Nicholson: The Bream competition was held recently and the fishing was good with big Bream. From the “Tyres” and up to the “Poplars” are the best spots, using vibes.

wonderland NEAR the township of Buchan, lies a honeycomb of caves full of spectacular limestone formations. The caves were formed by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock. The formations are created by rain water seeping through cracks and dissolving some of the limestone. As each droplet comes through the roof it deposits calcite which crystallises in a small ring. In time, stalactites are formed on the roof of the cave, and stalagmites build up from droplets which fall to the floor.

Cave Tours Professionally guided tours of either the beautiful calcite-rimmed pools of Royal Cave or the elaborate stalactites and stalagmites of Fairy Cave operate daily (except on Christmas Day). Both caves are lit and have walkways. Royal Cave has calcite-rimmed pools, and in Fairy Cave you will see elaborate stalactites and stalagmites. Tours to ‘wild’ unlit caves can also be arranged for small groups. The caves are a constant 17 degrees Celsius making the tour a comfortable temperature all year round.

Long Tan Day

Mon 18th August, from 10.30am Vietnam Veterans Museum, Philip Island

THE Vietnam Veterans Museum at Philip Island evolved, rather than was planned and without wishing to focus on individuals, it must be said that John Methven and his wife Krishna drove a Land Rover and trailer full of personal memorabilia around Australia in what was regarded as an embryonic mobile museum. The fuel for this effort was paid for by Department of Veterans Affairs in an effort to reach many veterans who had ‘gone bush’ and to make them aware that there was a body formed (Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia) to lobby for recognition and improved welfare and conditions.

NEW BRAND NEW WEBSITE NEW MUSEUM Visit the NVVM at Phillip Island www.vietnamvetsmuseum.org 5956 6400

Photos and stories were added to the collection both during and following this tour. The need for space arose and when the Methvens returned to San Remo a garage was arranged and this became the first Museum open to the public. The garage became increasingly crowded as more donations arrived and space became an issue. In 1999 The Methvens took the plunge and arranged for a site which was previously 5 shops and from that point on the museum flourished and took on a greater significance. Open to the public 7 days per week, the museum was run and manned by volunteers and came under the auspices of the Patriotic Trust Fund (set up after the Second World War by the Victorian Government) and as a consequence, the books of account are audited annually. This enables all donations to the Museum to be tax deductible. By late 2003, the museum was again running short of space and at the same time the building was sold and the new owners wanted possession. With the need to relocate, various options were considered. The Melbourne metropolitan area was regarded as too expensive. Geelong district was also considered but,

there was no clear advantage. The current region gets about 3.2 million tourists per year and is a destination in its own right. Phillip Island is essentially a nature park, but it also hosts the International Super Bikes, the Moto Grand Prix and the V8 Super Cars. It was felt that Phillip Island was affordable with enough activities to encourage interested parties to visit the Museum and to stay awhile.

This time the location needed to be owned by the Museum for the sake of permanency. With the concurrence of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, they to purchased 1¼ acres next to the Phillip Island airstrip. Terms and conditions were very favorable (no interest) and the museum will own the property outright in 10 years.

About Long Tan Day The 18th of August is the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, now synonymous with Vietnam Veterans Day. At the museum, a special commemoration event will be held to remember the sacrifice and service of Vietnam veterans and to especially remember those who fell. In 2014, the museum will host several activities on Monday the 18th. A commemorative ceremony, open to the public, will be conducted, with a special guest speaker, Ode and Last Post. For the first time, the event will be held in the museum’s new Remembrance and Valour Gallery. In addition, commemorative plaques designed for the Museum’s Garden of Reflection, will be unveiled – one to commemorate C Company 6 RAR, one to commemorate the service of the Australian Red Cross and another to the 8th Field Ambulance. After refreshments have been served, the Red Cross will open its commemorative garden bed near the Garden of Reflection. The growth of the Vietenam Veterans Museum and the continued work that is being done to strengthen its presence and relevance to the whole community is a credit to all involved throughout the years.

FLOWER lovers and horticultural enthusiasts are in for a real treat with the 58th annual Daffodil Festival in Leongatha, late August. The largest daffodil show in Victoria, the event heralds Spring and garden clubs from across the country come to South Gippsland to participate. It’s not just about the Daffodil either, other activities include a display by the Historical Society, Flowers in Praise, a gemstone display and Faith and Fabric. Another festival tradition is the

‘Story Book’ shop window displays taking place this year at the New beginnings Christian Bookshop, South Coast Christian College, the ‘Gatha foodstore, St Laurence’s Primary School, A.W. Smith & Sons, Woorayl CWA, Kelvin Johns Bedding and the Leongatha Children’s Centre. Check them out. South Gippsland is an excellent climate for growing daffodils so there are quite a few growers and breeders in the area including Hancocks Daffodils who will have a display and also be taking orders for bulbs.

Visitors to the show may be surprised at the range of colours that are now available in daffodils including pink, orange, red and even green in different combinations. There is also a large camellia section with some exhibitors travelling from Melbourne – most years see over 200 entries in this category. The local orchid group will be mounting a display for the first time and the Australian Plant Society will again create a spectacular display. Other beautiful exhibits will

feature cut flowers, shrubs and trees, pot plants, Australian plants with some very unusual varieties to be discovered. The Floral Art sections are always a highlight and attract a very high standard of entries plus the children’s sections will be both interesting and fun. Victorian majesty in Bairnsdale The Riversleigh, a Victorian gem in the heart of Barinsdale, was once two family homes, Heatherlea located at 25 Riverine Street and Riversleigh located at 1-3 Nicholson Street. These two gracious residences were built around 1884 by R.P. Vincent Jnr. for Dr. James Duncan and Mr. Ben Johnson, a grocer. Heatherlea was designed by “a local gentleman”, Mr. Swann and constructed at a cost of ₤2,300. It was originally known

as “Wharoonga” whilst Dr. Duncan lived there, in company with his three children, Daphne, Belladonna, and Eucalyptus. Dr. Duncan with Dr. Morgan were foundation members of the medical staff of the Bairnsdale Hospital. When several owners later, it was acquired by the Heath family Wharoonga was re-named “Heatherlea”. Although the central staircase of “Heatherlea” has been removed,

much of the original Victorian design elements remain, including the cast-iron balcony, terrazzo paving on the front veranda, the etched glass surrounding many of the doors and the magnificent rubyglass windows which originally lit the top of the staircase. Next-door “Riversleigh”, was also built with many of the extravagances of the Victorian era. The knobs which embellished the façade are gone but two ram’s heads remain on either side of a face on the dividing section which

About Your Home Loan options WHETHER you are a first home buyer, an existing home owner or an investor there is a seemingly endless choice of loan options – introductory rates, standard variable rates, fixed rates, line of credit loans, interest only loans, the list goes on, but with choice comes confusion. How do you work out whether a home loan is suitable for you? 1 Set your financial goals, determine how much you can afford and for how long you will be paying it off. You can do this yourself or with

your financial advisor or accountant. 2 Ensure the person you are working with is a member of the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA). MFAA members are professionals who adhere to a code of practice, principles, values, standards and rules of behaviour. 3 Research the loans available to you so that you can explore all the options with your mortgage provider.

Making the most of open house inspections IF you’re looking to purchase a property, chances are you’ll be attending a great many open house inspections in the coming months! Having a systematic approach to check the tangible and practical aspects of each property you visit can help you make the most of your time. Here’s some practical tips to help you be successful with open house inspections. Make a list When looking for the perfect home or investment property purchase, it pays to have a checklist of things that are important to you. Firstly, it will help you with your search – so you don’t

waste time inspecting properties that don’t offer what you require. But it will also save you time when actually making your inspections. Create your checklist when you choose a property to view from an advertisement or from your research online. Include all the things you’re looking for in a house – the number of bedrooms, quality and size of the kitchen, number of bathrooms, toilets and so on. You should also include less tangible aspects of the home on your checklist too - things like location, local amenities, schools, access to public transport, is it a quiet street - any other criteria that affect the general value of the house.

Take your time In most cases, you will have very few opportunities to visit a property before you make an offer to purchase it. That’s why it’s important to take your time and inspect everything carefully when attending an open house inspection. Use your checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything that’s important to you. When we say ‘inspect’ we mean take the time to do a bit more than just take a quick look at things! Check that the appliances work – check the cooker and air conditioning unit, how old are they? In the bathroom, turn on the taps to check the water pressure and how long it takes for the hot water to reach the faucet. A bad result could mean the plumbing and hot water heater need work. Take the time to look past the gorgeous décor and pretty landscaping! Vendors dress the house to sell and this can often distract you from looking

properly at the house itself. Clever furniture placement can make rooms seem larger and hide a multitude of sins. Take the time to measure rooms, open cupboard doors to check storage space, look behind the couch and fixtures to see if the walls are OK. Check that window and door locks are adequate, take a good look at external factors like the state of the fences, gardens and roof. Make notes Using your phone to take pictures is a great way to remember the properties you visit. But after a while, it can still be difficult to differentiate one from another. Make notes about all the things you like and don’t like about a property. When you get home you can go over your notes objectively and more easily decide which properties deserve a second viewing. If you fall in love with a house, it’s more important than ever to make a list of anything that might not be up to scratch. Your defects list can give you bargaining power on price, so it’s important to keep a level head and look for anything you can use to give you an edge during the negotiations. Ask questions Take the time to talk with the real estate agent and ask as many questions as you can. (Remember to keep notes on the answers!). This could not only help you to make more informed choices when you decide to buy a property, it could also give you an advantage when negotiating on price. Here’s some questions you might like to consider: ● Have you had any offers on the property?

● Has the vendor rejected any offers? ● How long has the house been on the market? ● Has there been a building inspection/pest inspection report done? May I have a copy? ● Why are the owners selling? (If it’s a divorce or deceased estate, you could get a bargain) ● Are there any costs of ownership/ fees? (Particularly important if it’s an apartment or unit.) ● When was the house last renovated? ● How old are the appliances – water heater/cooker? Leave your details with the agent Many people visit open house inspections and deliberately avoid leaving their details with the real estate agent. This is a missed opportunity to enlist a property expert in helping you locate the house or investment you’ve been looking for. If you visit a property and it’s not for you, just tell the real estate agent that you are definitely not interested in pursuing this opportunity but you would be interested in hearing about other properties in the area that might be suitable. That way the agent will call you to let you know about new listings and that might place you ahead of the pack when it comes to finding your dream home. Another great way to cut down on the number of open house inspections you need to attend is to decide exactly how much you can afford to spend on the property before you start looking. Talk to us about your financial circumstances and budget before you begin – that way you won’t waste time and energy on properties that are beyond your reach. Contact us on 0351750411

Brides Guide

GigPig

WHERE do you go in Gippsland to catch a great gig? If you love your live music but are not sure where to start, we here at Gigpig would like to share some of our favourites. Once you start you will realise that there’s a whole other world out there and you may have been missing out. And we’re not paid by any of these venues so we’re not just saying it. In Central Gippsland, we’re keen on the West Gippsland Arts Centre (WGAC’ www.wgac.com.au) and the O&H Bar and Bistro (find them on Facebook), the former for its highcalibre live music, theatre and dance offerings, the latter for its old-style Aussie pub rock and courteous staff. In the Latrobe Valley we like Old Gippstown – it has a real eclectic mix, from alternative events featuring original music by Gippsland musicians and run by promoters such as The Dancing Banana, to album launches to drumming circles. We’ve found it easiest to find out what’s on by checking out the Facebook page rather than the website. It’s good to see the old Merton Rush, rebranded as the Latrobe Valley Hotel Morwell, bringing an incredible array of live acts to Morwell. Karavana Flamenca, The Strzelecki Stringbusters, Agents of Rock and Molly McGuires are among recent performances that demonstrate the diversity of Gippsland music. There’s also Traralgon’s Spirit Bar. We like the setting (an old church), the

mezzanine floor and the great mix of music by local regulars and those with some notoriety – The Beards, Diesel and Pete Murray are among those who have performed in recent times. We’re excited to see the Bundalaguah Myretlebank Hall (www. bundyhall.org.au/ or on Facebook Live at the Bundy) come alive. The Black Sorrows played sold-out shows at the hall in June and there’s plenty of excitement about what’s coming up for the rest of the year. (We have been told to keep an ear out for Geoff Achison and the Soul Diggers.) In Sale, the Wellington Entertainment Centre (www.ebbwec.com.au) has similar offerings to the WGAC – look out for the Van Morrison tribute show

on August 23. In South Gippsland, we get blown away by what the Lyrebird Arts Council is up to (lyrebirdartscouncil. com.au). High-quality, boutique acts - such as Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, appearing in September – regularly grace the stage at the Meeniyan Town Hall. And it would be wrong not to mention the Westernport Hotel (thewesternport. com.au) at San Remo, where local musicians, regular blues sessions and artists recognised nationally and beyond all come out to play. * Tell us about your favourite venue: jump on the Gigpig Facebook page at Gigpig.gipps or email cherry@gigpig. com.au We’d love to share your story.

Bonjah

Thurs, 7th Aug, Spirit Bar, Traralgon. Tix: $21 www. oztix.com.au

Formed in 2006 and since having played sold-out shows around the world, rocking four-piece outfit Bonjah return to Traralgon to promote the band’s third studio album Beautiful Wild and show Gippsland punters what all the fuss is about. For a high-energy, bluesy rock rush, we suggest you shake off the winter sulking and step out. Supported by Tully on Tully and local boys Lobes of Julia.

BY RENEE RICCI AND it all starts by hiring a professional Make-Up artist! Achieving the right look can be a little overwhelming but it’s a small investment on your day that has amazing results. We interviewed Make-up Artist Melissa Maier about her professional tips, trends and recommendations.

Puzzle Lovers

How did you come to be in this industry Melissa? I came to professional makeup after five years as a model. Throughout my modelling career I learned the art of makeup and how to use different colours and styles to completely change my appearance. I was intrigued by makeup’s power and was drawn by its physical and psychological benefits. Having had bad skin myself, I know how it feels to lack confidence in your looks and I understand the use of makeup to cover insecurities. I have since developed the skills needed to teach others how to apply cosmetics, still look natural and feel amazing. I believe that your face and makeup are an extension of who you are and like to create looks that draw attention to a person’s best features. It was during my time modelling for the Australian Bridal Company that I developed a passion for bridal makeup in particular, which I now specialise in.

Rock diva Marcia Hines is set to demonstrate why, after 40 years in the business, she is considered one of Australia’s music industry greats. Showcasing hits from throughout her career and promoting her latest album Amazing, we’re betting Hines and her six-piece band will live up to the album’s moniker. The only “ouch” is that this is a Tuesday night performance, but no doubt worth the bleary eyes come Wednesday morning.

What’s Trending in Bridal Makeup? The cat-eye style is very elegant. It’s had a massive comeback of late and has remained a strong trend since 2013. This look allows the use of strong bold colour on the lips without looking too over done and “drag queenie”. It’s great styled with a classic vintage inspired wedding dress and finished off with big vintage earrings.

Marcia Hines is coming to West Gippsland this month.

Lashes!! Gone are the days of natural lashes coated in fine mascara. We want longer, fuller lashes to enhance that wedding day “twinkle” in the eye. I tend to use individual lashes and build the lash where needed. Whilst there are bar lashes out there in the market I feel that individual lashes still give the eyelashes volume and length without the weight of gluing a bar lash to the eye. They look a lot more natural in photographs too!

Sat, 16th August, Premiere Function Centre, Traralgon. Tix: $35, phone 0419 375 268 or 0409 436 551.

Every brides want’s to look & feel beautiful on her wedding day!

Dance your self silly to the music of the 80s with rocking cover band Plush and support local efforts to raise money for the Peter Mac Cancer Centre. You may even wish to don the flouro socks, shoulder pads and flicked hair (or other applicable 80s attire) for the evening. All in all, this has got fun, fun, fun written all over it.

Top spots to catch a gig BY CHERRY PRIOR

The Smokey eye is what most of my brides are after as it is a timeless look and one that most girls can wear. The Smokey colour tones have changed for 2014 to a brown/aubergine colour base rather than a charcoal/black base, which can be quite cold and less natural. The blending techniques are critical and finished off with a brown/black eye liner to bring the eye forward and create the big eye look.

glow to any brides face. Be careful when choosing the correct red shade of lipstick, it can be a little tricky; best to consultant your make up artist when selecting this bold look. What style of Makeup do you recommend to Brides/Bridal party? This is a tricky question as the make up should work around the whole look and feel of the wedding you are planning. The time of year, time of day, style of dress, colour of bridesmaid dresses, indoor wedding or outdoor wedding all play a HUGE part in deciding what is right for you and your bridal party. Different skin tone and skin texture also play a big role. This is why a trial is an absolute must. During a trial the make up artist should be asking you about the wedding day plan in order to achieve the best look possible for you. And remember you can mix it up too, natural lips for the day time ceremony and 8 the night time celebrations. 3 then rich sultry lips for

Natural hues of peachy/pink lips: Most brides want their eyes to feature, and I think that the lips should complement the eyes and not compete with them. Lipsticks and gloss colours in warm berry tones or dolly pinks are still going to allow the lips to stand out and go perfectly with the eyes all the while bringing in the pretty hues from their wedding bouquets.

Gippsland’s Great Alpine Road WITH a bumper snow season still in progress it could be a good time to get in on the action and hit the slopes this August. Luckily for Gippsland snow bunnies we have the benefit of taking what is considered the alternate route to the high plains.

Gippslanders’ have the luxury of jumping onto the Princess Highway to Bairnsdale and then heading north towards Omeo and straight on to Mount Hotham and Dinner Plain. It couldn’t be easier and we have the added bonus that this leg of the Great Alpine Road is the most reliable route to our snowfields.

shut and is a more relaxing way to arrive at the snow fields when compared to the more congested route via Bright. We can avoid the madding crowds and take advantage of some good old country hospitality along the way. From Bairnsdale you embark on an unforgettable journey along the

first half of the Great Alpine Road which takes you directly into the high country, along Australia’s highest yearround accessible sealed road at 1825m above sea level. There are plenty of interesting places to break your trip along the way too, they’re all on the banks of the Tambo River and well worth a visit. Bruthen, 24 minutes from Bairnsdale, is a cute little town with heaps of natural attractions and the famous Bullant Brewery and Ensay, at the base of the Nunniong High Plains,

Digital Business

Leading the Digital revolution THE Digital Disruption Revolution has begun and is gaining momentum. Be prepared and become a leader of the revolution and not its victim.

you can look at in your business in relation to this oncoming digital Tsunami. If you can’t beat them join them, become a revolutionary yourself with these simple steps.

Digital Disruption has being doing the rounds in the corporate consulting world for the last few years which is why you are starting to see these new online insurance services and the big retailers have stopped complaining about the Internet trade and are actually embracing their own online presence. This trend has now moved into the Small to Medium business sector with a momentum that is catching many by surprise. What has happened to all those great local model shops and other niche retail stores we used to have?

Your Costs – Look at your Administration tools and possible Cloud solutions for back end systems, automated support and delivery systems and mobility applications for efficiency gains. Think outside the box and instead of seeing where to cut costs, look at how you can apply digital technology to make yourself more efficient. It’s amazing what efficiencies can be achieved just by moving to a cloud based bookkeeping system for example.

So what is the Digital Disruption Revolution in layman’s terms? It’s all about those digital toys your kids play with – smartphones, cloud computing and mobility tools, because the kids have grown up as Digital Consumers. These are the consumers that are used to interacting with a digital business more and more. These are your customers.

Your Revenue – Examine your current revenue streams. Are they still valid in the new digital economy? Look at what your competitors are doing, or better still find new offerings and more efficient ways to deliver your service using these new digital technologies. The more you explore this, the more you can innovate and find new business streams you never thought possible.

38% of all Australian Small to Medium Businesses will have a medium to large impact to their bottom line in the next two years as a result of this digital disruption revolution. That’s a BIG number, and it’s a scary number. Retail, ICT, Finance, Professional Services, The Arts, and now even Real Estate are in this group and clearly in the target scope. Question is how fast will the bomb go off and is your business ready?

Your Strategy – Review your assets in relation to your revenue and costs. Are they generating value? Should you be investing in assets better aligned to bringing greater value and return on investment to your business? Can you identify new growth opportunities harnessing the digital technologies? Maybe even have a complete re-look of your entire business model.

So what does that mean to you if you do not act? It means your digital competitor can offer the same service you offer – cheaper, quicker, and more efficiently than you can and literally steal your clients from under your feet leaving you with less foot traffic through your doors. Sound scary? Well it should as it has already started, and is growing at an unprecedented rate. Putting your head in the sand and using the old lines about customer service, quality and the good old days, just do not and will not cut it with Gen-Y consumers. They want immediate satisfaction and they want it now! So before you panic, here are some really simple things

Using a Drafting Service

Damian Anderson Drafting & Design

BEFORE building or renovating, you’ll need a set of plans to keep your project running smoothly. An experienced draftsman knows the ins and outs of the planning process and your council requirements and can help you incorporate your preferences and budget.

Professional Service at a Realistic Price. Architectural Drafting, Town Planning Applications, Bushfire Assessments & 6 Star Energy Ratings.

How to Work with a Drafter? The most important factor as with any design project is communication. Do you feel the draftsman understands your vision? Have they got experience on similar projects? Can their past clients offer recommendations? Your draftsman should be happy to make amendments until you have the design just right. This is a crucial stage and it’s got to be spot on before breaking ground ry ina m Finally don’t forget about about qualifications and i l e Pr licenses, including professional indemnity insurance which must also be in place.

Why do you need a Drafting Service? Professional and detailed plans are required by council to ry obtain permits these days and the building process runs na imi same more smoothly if everyone is working fromrelthe P page. Well thought out plans can save you money and heartache in the long run. How do Drafters Work? Most Drafters use CAD (Computer Aided Design) to create a 3D visual plan of your home, which makes it much easier to visualise what the technical drawings represent. A draftsman will often charge a percentage of the total cost of building works. Some may offer a flat fee, commonly with smaller properties. Hourly rates vary from between $50 to $100.

as a north facing verandah you will most likely be wasting your time. They will not thrive until the soil temperature is around 17C. Sunny days are tempting but use any time you have to do other things in the garden. The soil would generally have warmed up enough by early November. Local experience of other gardeners is valuable.

Nancy’s Notes Howdy Folks! Here it is August already, and although it’s very cold today you can feel the promise of spring. The other day at the radio, we were speaking of the poisonous plants in our gardens. Lots of you have been in since then concerned, not so much about humans, but our furry friends. Because there have been so many queries, we thought we might mention a few that we have had experience with over the years. Remember though, that if you hauled out everything that could be toxic, there wouldn’t be much garden left... The Tradescantias include about 50 species. There are several common names including Spiderwort and Wandering Jew. One upright form, T. Andersoniana has, the clearest blue flower you can imagine. Growing to 45cm high, the flowers can reach 60cm. The one we refer to as Wandering Jew, T. Fluminensis is a woodland perennial groundcover with shiny green leaves on top, purple underneath and tiny white flowers – it can be invasive. If eaten, your pet may have about of diarrhoea or vomiting. I met two dogs who were ‘cured’ of an itchy rash, when their vet had their owner remove all the plants. We all know the Loquat (Eriobotrya), that beautiful tough tree with the glorious yellow to orange fruit. Each fruit has several large seeds that are slimy and shiny brown to black. Dr Glowinski says they remind him of shiny gall stones! They are highly toxic to your pet if eaten! Contact your vet immediately. As there are over 100 varieties of Kalanchoe, odds are pretty good that most of us have at least one somewhere in the garden. These handy succulents can be large or small and have 4 pedalled flowers in orange, red or yellow. Once again, if your furry friend eats this, you should rinse its mouth and contact your vet quickly. So there you go, that is 3 of the many plants that are dangerous to our pets, but thankfully they don’t seem to bother most of them. There is a good book available. It is written by Nicole O’Kane and is called ‘Poisonous2Pets.’ The ISBN number is 9780980634808, it would be a handy book for your library. Well I’m off to plant some roses – the selection is too good to resist! Happy Gardening Cheers, Nancy
