Shakespeare rebooted In B

Fri 8th August, 8pm

IN an incredibly exciting new production of Henry V, Damien Ryan directs a contemporary version of this play inspired by a true story. For 57 consecutive nights during the Blitz in 1941, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed plays including the works of Shakespeare and would perform them for others in the shelter. Told through the prism of boys caught in a modern conflict, Bell Shakespeare’s production will expose, in equal measure, the stirring heights and troubling depths of Henry

V. On a broader level, it will be an unflinching examination of political spin, patriotism, religion, class, brotherhood and leaders of men.

Looking Through a World class fare Glass Onion BOOKING FLOATING Dragon Dockside Restaurant in Lakes Entrance has been awarded Trip Advisors’ Certificate of Excellence for 2014.

Sat 30th August, 7.30pm Forge Theatre, Bairnsdale

Cost: Adults: $55.00, Concession: $50.00 (Seniors/ Pensioners), Students: $50.00

In 1992, John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta took to the small stage at the Tilbury Hotel, Woolloomooloo, Sydney with their debut production of “Looking Through A Glass Onion”. What was initially a one week booking quickly sold out and extended into a six week, sell out season. Thus the original seed of “Looking Through A Glass Onion” was born. Fast forward, after a massive 137-date tour in 2010/2011/2012, John and Stewart are returning with their “up close and personal” 2 man show in 2014 whilst gearing up toward launching the production Off Broadway in New York. The show is not a cut-and paste biography of Lennon or an emulation of the original recordings. On stage, with shadows from the lighting

with Lennon. He shies away from imitating the artist, but so emotive is his performance, it lulls the audience into believing anything is possible. It’s part concert and part biography, though it doesn’t seek to tell the full story of Lennon’s life. “It’s clear that Looking Through a Glass Onion has stood the test of time and can be called now a classic piece of Australian repertoire”. This is the second consecutive year that the restaurant has received this award from the renowned travel website. In 2013 Floating Dragon won Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence Award as a four star restaurant. This year Floating Dragon’s reviews on the website lifted the restaurant into the category of 4 ½ stars out of 5, making it, according to Trip Advisor, the No.1 restaurant in Lakes Entrance and a top 10 restaurant in Gippsland. “We are extremely delighted to be the recipient of Trip Advisors’ Certificate of Excellence Award for two consecutive years” said Ms. Sheenie Hwang, Manager of Floating Dragon. “Our staff work exceptionally hard to provide excellent customer service and this reward is our assurance that our efforts are well received by our customers”. Floating Dragon’s accolades continue to impress, having recently been featured in the new edition of the Lonely Planet Australia Travel Guide. Proprietor of Floating Dragon, Mr. Kohn Kyriakou said “The inclusion of our restaurant into the Lonely Planet guide is extremely pleasing given that our restaurant has only been established for 2 years. “The review process carried out by Lonely Planet is undertaken by anonymous reviewers who do not receive incentives from the business owner.

Left: Floating Dragon’s renowned Peking Duck

Despite Floating Dragon’s recent accolades, both Ms. Hwang and Mr. Kyriakou agree that the best award they can receive is seeing their customers enjoying themselves with friends. “When food brings people together and they engage with one another, that is when our job as hosts is truly done.” Kohn says. Floating Dragon serves dinner seven nights a week and runs a yum cha style lunch on the first Sunday of every month from noon. Its’ unique waterfront position coupled with great food and service makes this a restaurant well worth booking ahead for. With seven albums under their belt, they have built the reputation of being one of Australia’s hottest bluegrass acts. Australian Country Music Award winners in 2009, 2010 and 2012, Hamish and Lachlan Davidson are “the best young bluegrass pickers we have seen for a long while in Australia and a very exciting live act. They appeared on the Ryman in Nashville at the 2010 International Bluegrass Music Awards as presenters and showcased at IBMA’s World of Bluegrass in 2004 and 2009 and the 2011 European World of Bluegrass in the Netherlands. They are also winners of multiple Australian

Meeniyan on Fire and 19th of July, of the iconic town hall, famous for hosting many international music acts through the auspices of the LyreBird Arts Council. The hall was built in July 1939 to replace its predecessor, which burnt down and has excellent acoustics and an unrivalled dance floor made from 28mm thick Jarrah with a roof structure that was a unique construction in its time. On the Friday there will be an old fashioned film night with oldie but goodies such as Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy. During the festival there will be an exhibition of hall memorabilia in the foyer and in the evening the southern grass “McCrackens” band will get the blood pumping. This year Meeniyan on Fire also includes a Healing Fair in the gardens of pickers paradise the Antique Shuffle. Stalls will feature Bowen therapy, Reiki, seated massage, beauty therapy, Tarot and Palmistry readings and craft stalls showcasing fabulous quilts, dream catchers and felted Alpaca products. Make sure you take advantage of a little

pampering while your taking in Meeniyan’s celebrations. Inspired by the festival, the Meeniyan Art Gallery is also getting in on the act with a special ‘Fired Up’ exhibition that features interpretations of the term ‘fired up’ by artists from South Gippsland and beyond. Last year’s event was a smashing success so get the family down to Meeniyan mid July and let the townsfolk turn your winter frown upside down! A big thank you to the sponsors. Walhalla Mon 1st to Sun 31st August

THE perfectly preserved town of Walhalla is a great spot to visit, it was once one of Australia’s richest towns and home to over 4000 gold seekers. Now this sleepy mountainside village is frozen in time and home to only 20 residents. Everything in Walhalla has a story to tell. The lovingly restored town centre is full of heritage buildings from the hamlet’s boom time after the discovery of Cohen’s Reef, a three kilometre vein of gold running

through the area, in 1863. The village plays host to thousands of visitors each year and one of the major drawcards is the annual Vinter Ljusfest, a Swedish tradition to bring in the winter. Walhalla celebrates the dark and cold by illuminating itself with light, moving vision and sound. The town will be lit up each night from the 1st – 31st of August from 6.30pm and this year’s theme is China. The Chinese made an important contribution to the town’s development as they did elsewhere during Victoria’s goldrush history.

One of this year’s festival attractions is a fascinating lantern tour back in time to uncover how the Chinese community influenced Walhalla and made such an impact on daily life. You can also see some recently unearthed relics in the Chinese Gardens and other sites that are normally unseen by the general public. Other experiences this year include the Light Train, a luminescent night time view of Stringers Gorge travelling along the Walhalla to

Thomson line, the Gold Mine Tours – a lantern tour deep underground, and the Walhalla Vinter Ljusfest Photography Nights and of course

the town’s light show is a sight to behold plus there’ll be plenty of special food and accommodation offerings to try out.

Finance & Business

Saving your first deposit THE path to home ownership starts with saving for your first home deposit. For many, it requires a new attitude to financial responsibility and learning some new financial techniques to make your savings grow. Here’s some tips for making that lump sum grow quicker. Work out a budget Managing your money is a lot easier if you create a comprehensive budget. To create one, work out your living expenses every month. Include everything – rent, food, morning coffee, utilities, petrol or public transport costs – everything you are spending your money on. The trick is to think carefully and include all of your actual expenses. Once these have all been deducted from your monthly income, what’s left over is your potential monthly savings amount. It’s that simple! The next step is to look at areas where you can spend less. Decide how much money you want to save every month and find ways to cut your spending to achieve that goal. For most people, just being aware of your casual spending habits can be a big help. Do you really need to buy a coffee on your way to and from work every day? Could you save an extra $50 a week by bringing your lunch instead of buying it?

The next step is to look at your bank account at the end of every month and put away what’s left over. If you’ve ever said something like “Oh look – I’ve got $200 left over this month, I’m going shopping!” then saving for your deposit is also going to require a bit of a mental shift. Remember that ‘extra’ money is destined for your savings account – don’t be tempted to spend it on anything you don’t really need. There are some additional benefits to planning a regular budget and training yourself to stick to it! If you have an established savings routine and a strong history of growing your savings balance, it may place you in a better position when it comes time to apply for your home loan. It could even mean you have more choices and can obtain a better interest rate. Make your money work for you Once you’ve worked out a budget and have established a monthly savings routine, you’ll want to consider other areas where you can save money. You can start by cutting back the costs on your everyday transaction account. To do this, you can consider paying your bills with automatic debiting as this is usually a fee free service. You can also save money by being careful where and when you make withdrawals – use EFTPOS when shopping if you must

withdraw cash as there is no extra charge and avoid using other bank’s ATMs as these attract higher fees. Every day transaction accounts usually do not pay interest, so you’ll want to consider opening a savings account so your money works harder for you. Keeping your savings in your transaction account also makes it very accessible – putting your money away in a savings account will help to remove the temptation to splurge. Shop around for your savings account and try and choose one that pays interest daily if possible. The more frequently interest is paid on your savings account, the more quickly the interest will add up. Some savings accounts just pay interest on the monthly balance, which really means you get interest calculated on your minimum monthly balance and these are the ones to avoid. In addition to the interest rate and how it is calculated, there are other factors to consider like account keeping fees and transaction costs. These can really add up. Look for an account that’s free of charges and allows a few fee free withdrawals every month. Some accounts even offer an interest bonus if you make no withdrawals at all, so it does pay to shop around!

Stash your money away from temptation A savings account is a great way to get started on saving your deposit. But once you have a few thousand dollars saved, you may find it beneficial to put it away in a term deposit account. With a term deposit account, you put your money away for a fixed period of time. It’s a great way to remove the temptation of spending it on luxuries or things you don’t really need. Additionally, term deposit accounts offer a better rate of interest than regular savings accounts. The interest rate on term deposits is usually determined by the length of time you agree to leave your money in there without touching it. Generally, the

longer the term the higher the interest rate – and your interest rate will be fixed for the agreed term. There are also often penalties for withdrawing funds from a term deposit early – which is a good incentive to leave it sitting in there earning extra interest! Find a band for your next function

Left: The Bubstone band dishes up heaving rock from the Foo Fighters, Grinspoon and the like.

BY CHERRY PRIOR LOOKING for a band for your engagement, wedding or work function? Finding the right entertainment is not an easy ask. The band – not just its music, but its professionalism – can make or break your event. Gigpig.com.au has information on local bands in the book a band section, so you can source free information there on whose about and what they offer. Shane Ambrosini, bass player for The Rhythm Junkies, a Latrobe Valley cover band that plays regular pub gigs as well as footy club dos and weddings, says it’s also good to get recommendations from a friend or acquaintance. But finding out who is around is just your starting point. “You really need to get along to a gig and see whether their sound is what you want,” Shane says. “Even if you like their style, have a chat with the musicians to see what they can deliver. You may want a specific song or songs, you may want a chilled environment or you may want to ramp things up. “Most cover bands, if you like their style, will be able to tailor something to suit your needs.” South Gippsland covers band

Bubstone is one band doing the rounds. It dishes up heaving rock from the Foo Fighters, Grinspoon and the like, and its offerings suit a real party atmosphere. It’s a rock band with attitude. Covers duo Duality, on the other hand, provides an easy-listening option for weddings and quieter events while Smokin’ Dog Johnson is a cool, blues rock band that will bring groove to any occasion.

Once you’ve established that you like the sound of a band, it’s also important to check how many sets the band will play and for how long, what sort of a break they take between sets, transitions between songs, interaction with the audience and immeasurable elements such as charisma and personality.

Smile it’s your wedding day!

TODAY’S couples generally start planning their wedding over a year out, but find the day goes by in a flash! Waking up after the wedding you want fabulous photos to remember it by. It’s important that your wedding photographer captures your big day in a way that reflects your wedding and personal style. Photography can cost up to 12 per cent of your wedding budget, depending how lavish the album, and it’s worth the expense considering you may see your photographer for 15 hours and they then spend 30 to 40 hours producing your album. Keep in mind you’re paying for their style, experience, qualifications and expertise as well as time, materials and overheads. However, we can’t all afford an expensive photographer and you’ll still want quality and style, choose to reduce the hours and book a smaller package deal that suits your budget better. When searching for a wedding photographer Bass Coast Bride consulted Jess Lane of Jess Lane Photography for her professional opinion on capturing your special day. Jess explains “after working with wedding photography clients since 2005 and during the growth of my own photography business over the past year and a half I’ve fielded many a question from the clients themselves and other industry professionals as well. “The first thing I would say is that with the great variety of Wedding Photographers to choose from it’s really important to work out what makes them unique from other photographers and if their style suits you and your fiances. “My advice for brides is to really get to know and research your photographers shooting style. Follow them on social 5 9 media and browse their website for recent work. Look at other portfolio sessions to make 7 sure there is a consistency 6 in their style” she says. 6 2 Here’s some trending style ideas from Jess to help you 9 aspect of your wedding clarify what you want from the style day photo shoot.

photographer – the pure observational photographer that blends in. ● Using a fashion sensibility where the couple and bridal party are posed traditionally. ● Modern style which is a blend of storytelling and documentary combined with formally posed wedding photography.

How do you tell the difference and work out which Photographers Style suits you? Jess advises you to ask them about their shooting and post production editing style. Do they aim for a vintage look, grainy, low opacity or sharp and bright? What do they look for while composing an image? Do they shoot in automatic mode or manual mode? How do they work with Light? Jess says “for example while I am shooting or changing locations I am always looking at the light, where it is coming from and how best to utilise light in the scene I am about to capture. “I do a quick survey of light in every location I move to, manually expose when lighting allows and if lighting is poor, affected by artificial light or a fast exposure speed is required I shoot with a flash to create the most natural result. “Also look at how they compose and frame an image in their portfolio. Is their composition off beat or traditional rule of thirds? (is everything centred, or off centre in the cropping) . “I am always looking at composition of subjects in my viewfinder” she says. “Personally I like both composition and cropping styles in my work. I look for details and moments and what framing/ composition works best for each images story in post production.” 4 8 9 To get more in-depth tips from Jess Lane Photograpy visit 5 7 1 4 www.basscoastbride.com.au/blog.

Snow Season

A howling good time... Sat 9th & Sun 10th August Dinner Plain

UP in our high country in the Victorian snowfields the arrival of first snow at the picturesque Alpine village of Dinner Plain signals to the Altitude 5000 Sled Dog Group that it’s time to step up their preparations for this years spectacular Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge! Celebrating 21 years of successful sled dog racing at Dinner Plain the 2014 race is to be held across the weekend of the 9th and 10th of August. This annual event showcases the top dogs of sled dog racing in Australia and is unique in being the first Australian snow-based race of its kind. More than 75 Mushers (dog team drivers) and in excess of 350 sled dogs are expected to compete at this year’s event. The race is held over two days and teams who have successfully completed the course with the best times are judged the winners.

This year, spectators will see standard 2, 3, 4 and 6 dog teams supplemented by the exhilarating 8 dog team class. If your plans are to attend this popular weekend you are definitely in for a unique experience. Expect to see and hear plenty of howling and energized sled dog teams. Witness the amazing pulling power and speed of the awesome 8 dog teams whilst manoeuvring through spectators and media for the best photographic vantage points.

Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are the most common breeds of dogs raced. Both breeds are visually and physically powerful competitors given snow is a part of their natural habitat. Siberian Huskies are extremely quick on their paws, while the Alaskan Malamutes are known for their endurance over long distances. In recent years, more unusual breeds have also competed including Labradors, Hounds and Shepamutes (a cross between

German Shepherds and Malamutes). Spectators are welcome to wander through the “Sled Dog Park” (race pits) – where all dog teams are housed, get up close with dog sleds and equipment, chat to Mushers and with permission pat or grab a photo with their favourite dog team. Other planned activities include a Snow-BBQ, a 21 year photographic history of the race, together with refreshments and merchandise stands. All this makes for an exciting and exhilarating high country event exclusive to Dinner Plain. Dinner Plain is the first Australian Alpine Resort where sled dogs are allowed to race and then it is only for this weekend under strict permit conditions. Spectators are most welcome, but it is stressed that dogs not competing be left at home. Race Start times: Saturday 9am to 1pm - followed by lunch Sunday 9am to 12.30pm – followed by awards

Rethinking Latrobe Valley ‘Re-Activate’ is an initiative taking place in the Latrobe Valley as a phase of the ‘Transiting Cities Low Carbon Futures’ research project run by a OUTR (Office of Urban Transformations Research) and a committee of local business owners, artists and arts management professionals, designers and council members.

The overall aim is to produce strategies for an adaptive and resilient regional centre, which can respond to the variable scales and conditions of change that affect life in the Latrobe City; enhancing the existing and future qualities of this urban environment, the rehabilitated mines and associated infrastructures, and define opportunities for growth.

Outcomes of OUTR’s research will propose and is already demonstrating a range of design strategies through a range of time frames – from short term to long term, temporary to permanent, and staged growth cycles – for transiting cities, such as Latrobe City which is currently shifting to a low carbon future.

Transiting Cities: ReActivate focuses on the potential for creative practices to become agents for cultural, environmental, and political change within an increasingly complex world. The intention is to utilise and bolster existing qualities rather than inventing everything anew.

Latrobe Valley has, and is, undergoing significant economic change as it makes these shifts from traditional forms of manufacturing to new forms of economic activity. Action is needed to enable cities like Morwell successfully transform into alternative modes of existence.

This means the project is currently concerned with small places and brief spans of time. Temporary occupation can then provide alternative visions for urban planning, that does not leave development to government regulatory bodies and the unpredictable economy alone, instead it will explore innovative forms of

appropriation for the Latrobe Valley. The quintessential landscape which is Latrobe Valley offers a unique opportunity for creative industries, events, and activities to exist and activate spaces in transit, vacant sites, and redundant infrastructures, simultaneously bolstering existing conditions whilst organising and enhancing possible futures for this regional center. The Re-Activation phase of this work aims to ReConnect, ReMake and Revive Latrobe Valley through community based building strategies that will explore the creative economies as the primary catalyst for re-activation whilst at the same time aiming to intensify town centers, strengthen the community and micro

Do I need a council permit for a deck or pergola? Council permits for decking Organising a permit is the right way to go to make sure your decking is built safely.

visual appearance and boundary regulations, while a building permit covers things like compliance with safety regulations and construction details.

Make sure you have approval from your local council. Others may tell you that you don’t need a permit but they won’t be paying the fine or having to take down the structure if you do.

There are many aspects of your construction which will probably require a permit. Such as:

Individual councils have their own regulations in relation to decks, pergolas and other extensions. These rules cover things like structural integrity, materials you can use and minimum construction standards. What kinds of permits are required? There are two kinds of permits that could be required. A planning permit covers points such as

● Closed roofed structures like steel or acrylic roof pergolas (shade cloth and sails will likely not require a permit, but just make sure first). ● Footing depth and construction and ability to cope with the load of the deck or pergola roof. ● Any structures attached to the house. ● Structures located up high where may need a fence or rail to prevent falling.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE 6 STAR ENERGY RATINGS TOWN PLANNING APLICATIONS WILL BEAT ANY PRICE MELBOURNE TO MALLACOOTA

ANY TIME THIS MONTH The variety of vegetables that can be planted this month is still fairly limited. Spend some time adding old manure or compost into your garden beds. You could also think about what you want to grow for the coming growing season.

RHUBARB is a good yielder while asparagus does not yield very highly for the space it takes up. Rhubarb ‘crowns’ can be purchased at this time of the year from nurseries and garden centres. If you already have a plant or know someone that has one you can divide the crown with a sharp knife or spade. To grow well throughout the year it needs a sunny spot with a good supply of water but will still produce well in the summer if it is planted in a shadier spot. Ensure that there is a growing bud and a good piece of root on each division and plant the root with the bud just level with the soil. Rhubarb is harvested by holding the stem low down and pulling with a twisting motion. ASPARAGUS is grown from crowns planted at this time of the year. It needs good, well drained soil and a sunny position for best results. Crowns are planted in a trench with the roots laid out flat and lightly covered with soil. As the plant starts to grow in the spring the trenches should be gradually filled in. The spears should appear in early spring but no spears should be cut for the first two seasons. In the third year the spears can be cut up until mid December then the plant should be left to form ‘ferny’ heads to replenish the plant. Cut the tops off in June and mulch or compost them. Old manure or compost then needs to be worked in before the spears start appearing in early spring.

Nancy’s Notes Howdy Folks! Like a friend said on the net, “you know it’s cold when you go outside an it’s cold!” We have had quite a few folks wondering which of the 8 gazillion preventative spray programs they should be using on their deciduous fruit trees and roses. I don’t know! However, for what it’s worth, this is what we use on ours: In the autumn, when the leaves have fallen, we spray with White Oil to run-off point so it penetrates all the crevices and cracks in the bark and hopefully smothering any critters waiting for spring. (Some years we change and apply this spray in the middle of winter – why? Because we can.) Anyway, two or three weeks later we begin to treat for disease. This year we will use copper oxychloride. Next year it will be copper hydroxideor lime sulphur because fungal diseases hate change. We will also add about 3 mls of White Oil per litre to the spray to better enable it to stick to the trunk and branches. We repeat this spray every two or three weeks until just prior to bud burst because we don’t want to burn the young foliage. If any trees have had a disease such as an apricot with ‘freckle’ that gradually covers the fruit with dark spots, we continue to spray through spring but change to Mancozeb or Zineb (this one is so expensive!) again adding a tad of White Oil. Repeat every three or so weeks until about 7-9 weeks before harvest. Oh yea, just because we love it, we add a bit of Maxi-crop to all sprays just to add vigor. I also must admit that some of our fruit trees are so happy that they only get a seaweed (Maxi-crop or Seasol) spray once a fortnight throughout the year – sort of, “Why take Panadol if you don’t have a headache?” Like I said earlier, this program suits us, you could probably choose a better one – in fact let us know what you do! It is cold, but if that is any indication the cherries should be super this year! I was going to plant some Broad Beans and Peas today, but have decided to stay by the nice cozy fire – you stay warm too! Happy Gardening Cheers, Nancy
