The Big Draw Saturday 18 October, 10am to 2pm
THE Campaign for Drawing was launched in 2000 by the Guild of St George in the UK to commemorate its founder, the great Victorian writer, philosopher and artist John Ruskin, who believed that drawing helps us understand our world. The Campaign raises the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. Its long-term ambition is to change the way drawing is perceived by educationalists and the public. This has won support from leading practitioners in the creative industries and in art, architecture and design colleges, signalling an overdue realisation that drawing is fundamental to the training of students in these disciplines. The Campaign takes a wider view. It sees drawing as a basic human skill useful in all walks of life. The Campaign’s work will finish when the words ‘I can’t draw’ are dropped from our vocabulary.

Anglers smashing it at Lakes!! Your No.
1
Stop Fishing Shop!
ROSS the Fish Whisperer, at Riviera Bait Supplies in Lakes Entrance, was very excited when the Gippslander touched base at the start of October for his Lakes fishing report! The school holidays have been a very busy time and a tremendous success for anglers who were well rewarded for their trip to the region.
Summer is here said Ross with great enthusiasm and fishermen are smashing it at Lake Tyers for Bream and Flathead on Mop Mullet Lures, live prawn and fresh blue bait. The Tambo is producing nicely at Wheelers Flat, Rough Road and Johnsonville Boat Ramp and the Metung Jetty is seeing anglers land
Trevally, Bream and a few nice King George Whiting at the 1.5 kilo mark. The Sand Crabs are back at the jetties and at Bullock Island and unusually for this time of the year the wild prawn have already returned with 1 to 2 kilo catches being regularly reported. Eastern Beach, Lake Boga and Lake Tyers are all producing 2 to 2 and a half pound Salmon, and once again angers are smashing it. On the Saturday before we went to print 27 boats went out at Nine Mile Reef and had bagged their Snapper limit in 2 hours!
Live Bait, Sandworm, Shrimp, Rods, Reels, Tackle & Accessories
It looks like fishermen are in for a fabulous season if these results are any indication, and they very probably are! Left: The King George Whiting are biting at Metung. Top: Mop Mullet Segmented Plastic Fishing Lure 30g/14.2cm

Vintage Soul Rock THE band Cisco Caesar is what happens when lovers of blues, soul, vintage rock and alt-country get together, the Staples Singers meet the Rolling Stones. They are appearing at two locations in East Gippsland this October.
soul band Pornland. They realised that their powerful voices and shared love of soul were uncannily matched and formed Cisco Caesar.
James Cisco was born in Central Illinois and spent his childhood attending bluegrass festivals. As he grew older he took gigs across the USA until falling in love with an Australian which led him to our shores.
Finally add one Jacob Cole, the gifted guitar player from The Portraits, Kimber and the Rolling Wheel and you have a very unlikely group of musicians. The sound is unmistakable: a voice-driven, song writing band with powerful hooks in magic hands. Their debut album Burnt & Broken is the culmination of chance, talent, and years of hard work.
On frequenting pubs and clubs hosting open stages he met Paul ‘Caesar’ Slattery, the legendary frontman of Australia’s notorious disco
They then met Jason Torrens, an amazing drummer most notably in The Reefers and Bugdust.

Latrobe Shire News Program Ukulele workshops, concert, strum, food & fun. Tyers Hall. Friday October 24th & Saturday 25th
Fri-Sat 24-25th October Tyers Hall, Main Road, Tyers
FORMED in 1982, the Gippsland Acoustic Music Club is a Community organisation which aims to encourage acoustic music in the Gippsland region. Late October the GAMC is putting on their famed Uke Muster to cater for all things Ukulele. See the program on the breakout at right. The Club supports both the development of local musicians’ skills and provides concert opportunities. Acoustic music covers a broad spectrum of music and at the club you will hear everything from folksy guitar music to mellow blues, Acappella singing to jazz or music from other cultures – Celtic, Irish, African, Reggae. Australian ‘home grown’ music is welcome too and local musicians often perform their own compositions.
Cost: Day Ticket $25/$20 conc. Youth $10. Young players FREE.
PROGRAMS FRI 24TH Above: The Gippsland Acoustic Music Club’s Uke Muster promises the opportunity to learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Uke!
At the Club’s monthly club night, on the first Sunday of the month, acts from all over the world are invited to play. The range of styles and instruments played is extensive and local artists are encouraged to provide a 20 minute support act, giving them the opportunity of performance practice. In general, club nights cost $15 adult, $10 members/concession, children and U18/students free. At times, an extra special act is featured and the prices are adjusted accordingly. Supper is provided by club members, and held at intermission.
The general community is welcome to attend. You also can join the Vocal Nosh sessions which are held most months prior to the club night. They also hold music camps twice a year, in Winter and Summer, at local, easily accessible sites around the Latrobe Valley, with costs kept to a minimum. Families are welcome. Magical Marlo AS quoted by EJ Bradley many years ago ‘Marlo is one of these peaceful, out of the way places, where nerves and worries, and the disappointments of cities may be curbed or forgotten.’ This sentiment was certainly true back then, however, in this day and age of instant gratification it is perhaps more pertinent than ever. Marlo remains a small tranquil sea side town with just a necessary touch of habitation, and found at the gateway to the Wilderness Coast in Far East Gippsland, 386km from Melbourne at the mouth of the Snowy River. Boasting some of the most unspoilt waterways and beaches in Victoria, the sheltered estuary waters are a haven for fishermen, kayakers, paddle boarders and other water based activities. The Snowy River Estuary Walk in Marlo is a perfect opportunity to experience the local eco system, taking you from the elevated views of the wetlands, the estuary and river mouth, to the coastal rain forest, over the sand dunes and finishing at the wild coast line of Frenches Narrows. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident Lyre Birds and other inhabitants.

Perfect for bush walking, spotting one on the hundreds of bird or animal species and if you are here in October or November you may just spot a Humpback Whale or two. Leongatha Rose Festival
Popular roses spectacular TO celebrate its 43rd year, the Leongatha Rose Spectacular is flourishing into a weekend event! The Spectacular is expanding in new directions – still within its traditional venue, the historic Memorial Hall, and out to the scenic, former town of Mt. Eccles. Here, for the first time, events will extend into Sunday. This years feature rose, ‘Monty’s Rose’ (White Ensign) has a local story and has led to this years theme of Heritage Roses.

William Montgomery, known as ‘Monty’ throughout most of his long life, lived and worked in Leongatha from about 1920 until his death in 1979, at the age of 92.

An extra feature rose for this year is ‘Red Cross’. In the late nineties Ross Roses were asked by the Australian Red Cross for a suitable rose and they suggested a Meilland they were trialling. The bloom was originally registered as a Grandiflora, but its classification was later changed to Hybrid Tea. ‘Red Cross’ is also featured to celebrate the Centenary of its namesake organisation and in honour of the local ladies who have provided refreshments at the show since its inception, as a fundraising activity.

Rail Trails About Grand Ridge
Mirboo North to Boolarra THE Grand Ridge Rail Trail, traversing beautiful mountain countryside with a gentle trail grade between Mirboo North and Boolarra, winds 13 picturesque kilometres through the Strzelecki Ranges.
Uniquely, this trail runs continuously along the site of the old railway track. It takes 3 hours to complete on foot – one way. Use a two car shuffle by parking at each end, it’s approximately 20 minutes
by car between the two towns.
The Grand Ridge Rail Trail follows the former branch line from Mirboo North to Morwell which opened in 1885. South of Boolarra, the hilly country required many large cuttings, embankments and bridges, all constructed by hand. The railway carried timber, dairy produce and passengers. In its latter years, the railway was used mainly for passengers. A rail motor service commenced after WWII
and continued until the line was closed in 1974. The Rail Trail, which opened in the late 1990s, was effectively closed for some time following the Grand Ridge bushfires of February 2009. It has since been restored with some great new improvements. Starting the trail from Mirboo North, behind the Grand Ridge Brewery, you’ll pass over the top of some massive embankments.
Midway between Mirboo North and Boolarra is the Darlimurla station site with a shelter and trail map. From here the trail continues with a gentle descent to Boolarra. This is the part of the trail that has rebounded beautifully from the damage caused by the 2009 fires, the Darlimurla to Mirboo North section remains as verdant as ever. Tw o n e w a r c h bridges are a great new addition to this section. They are on the original gradient and replace difficult to access low level bridges that were burnt out.

GIPPSLAND VEHICLE COLLECTION MOTOR MUSEUM The Gippsland Vehicle Collection was formed following visits to Maffra by several Grand Prix rallies over recent years. Those events served to uncover an enormous number of noteworthy vehicles and the basis of a significant Motor Museum was discovered. Word spread quickly to other car clubs and interested bodies and the Museum soon came to life. The massive WW2 building that houses the museum is an iconic backdrop to the displays that are changed two to three times a year, such is the interest and the depth of the collection. The displays reflect motoring and transport history from horse drawn carriages up to modern racers. Right: The award winning Port Albert Maritime Museum. The old bank vault houses a display on Gippsland Gold Discovery. Just a few of the highlights include: the story of the Bass Strait lighthouses told in a display on “The Mailmen of Bass Strait” and the growth and decline of Port Albert’s fishing fleet is outlined in “The Sharkers of Port Albert”. Information boards explain the findings of a recent archaeological dig at the site of the 19th century Chinese fish curing industry at Port Albert and outdoor exhibits in the lovely gardens include the Cliffy Island lighthouse work boat and the immersive “Talking Boat”.

Trafalgar – Town of the Month
For many of the towns organisations this it’s their best opportunity to raise funds to keep them operating for another year, so The Battle of Trafalgar Festival has become very important for anyone who has a stake in the town and everyone pulls together to make is a fabulous event. The Trafalgar Chamber of Commerce, who represent local business, are also currently running their annual Try Traf First campaign, with the aim of encouraging residents to look for services and products locally as a first port of call. The benefits of shopping locally are well known, the major one being that all money spent locally directly boosts the local economy. Supporting local business also helps the local community because they are way more likely to give back to their community in the form of sponsorships, not to mention jobs. There is a lot of energy in Traf, so drop in and say hello, maybe even head to one of the many events running in The Battle of Trafalgar Festival.

Maffra Ag on Show Sat 25th October
THE Maffra Show Committee works hard to create a truly Agricultural Show which has been running since 1887. It’s a big affair and also features all manner of entertainments and creative displays. Some of the great stuff featuring this year is chainsaw carving, a steam engine display, the ever popular animal nursery, a Pet Parade, the Food and Wine Court and International Food Festival and roving entertainment. There is an extensive program for Equestrian competitors including a full 2 day program for show jumping held on a purpose built arena which is well watered and topped with sand annually. There are two new Equestrian events this year, namely the Supreme Ridden Championship and Supreme Led Championship. Livestock entries are received every year for dairy cattle, beef cattle, dairy goats and poultry. Organiser Dennis Proud says “in another first for 2014 the dairy section will host a Jersey breed feature, so it will be a great spectacle for the crowd.” And don’t forget to check out the Junior Calf Competition. Farm kids from across the district have been encouraged to rear calves for the Show’s calf competition. Taking place at 10am on the Saturday, the
aim is to reward general husbandry and stockmanship rather than the finer points of the calf. “Children must have genuinely looked after the calf, they will be asked questions and must be able to lead the calf” says Dennis. The Arts & Crafts section also forms a large component of the Show. Entries are displayed in 2 Pavilions and include open classes, secondary and primary student classes, senior citizens work and the CWA. On display will be flowers, floral art, plants, fruit and veg, cookery (including the highly creative Maffra’s Chocolate Cake With a Twist), jams, sauces, beading, handmade cards, painting drawing, graphic design, woodwork, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking and photography. There was over 2,000 entries in 2013 so this to be promises an amazing display of talent. Heading into the night carnival and the Dog High Jump, Woodchop Competition, “The Maffra Mile” and Brian Daly’s Memorial Smash Up Derby are all programmed along with a lot of fun novelty events. The evening’s entertainment will culminate in a Spectacular Fireworks Display. After a break for three years, the Smash Up Derby, named in honour of its original organiser and Past

President, the late Brian Daly, is now organised by Tim Daly. Tim says the aim is to have at least six vehicles for the event. “We have a number of rules which need to be adhered to regarding the modification of the cars so any local businesses or individuals who would like to take part, I ask that they get in touch with me so we can help them” Brian Daly first had the idea of a smash up derby for the Maffra show after seeing a similar event at the Bega show in the early 1990’s. “Dad was a ‘can do’ man and for years the derby was a highlight of the carnival.’ said Tim. Show schedules and entry forms are now available at various businesses throughout the district or visit www. maffrashow.org.au

An Architect or an Architectural Draftsman?
Damian Anderson Drafting & Design
If you’re planning on building a large commercial project, you should definitely hire an architect. If you’re constructing a house or extension, a talented architectural draftsman could be the right choice. They can do the job equally well and cost less. It depends on how complicated the project is, the design and your budget. When it come time to find an architect or architectural draftsman, get quotes and check credentials. Determining
Professional Service at a Realistic Price. Architectural Drafting, Town Planning Applications, Bushfire Assessments & 6 Star Energy Ratings.
if they have the relevant experience and qualifications is the aim here. Previous work portfolios can be very helpful and ask lots of questions about what is included in the quotes. Architects and drafters can charge hourly rates, but often they will charge a percentage of the total project cost. An architectural draftsman can offer you the same level of expertise and service at a lower price, so it’s really worth asking the questions.
October in the Vegie Patch AS the weather warms up this month there is a lot more things that can be prepared for or planted. Unless you are wanting a crop for preserving, such as tomatoes, smaller plantings at regular intervals is the best option. This will ensure a more consistent supply and spare you from a glut of produce.

hand and then give a soft watering. Tomatoes are also very easy to grow from cuttings. We will get to that in later notes. Prepare places for planting tomatoes.
2nd WEEK
Sow seed of pumpkins, zucchinis and cucumbers in small pots or the bottom tray of an egg carton. Put one or two seed per pot or space. Keep the pots inside or in a warm, sheltered spot outside and protect from possible late frosts. This will give you a head start when the weather is a bit warmer. Pumpkins, etc. resent any root disturbance so transplant carefully. If you are using egg cartons just separate and plant the whole cell. As with all seed/seedlings make sure that the soil in the containers does not dry out. Tomatoes and capsicums can also be raised the same way. They can be sown singly in egg cartons or a number of seeds in a larger pot. Sow the seed so the plants will be about 25mm (1”) apart when they grow. Just sow the seed on top of the soil mix and cover with a thin layer of mix. Press down with your
Nancy’s Notes Howdy Folks! Spring has certainly sprung hasn’t it? A little bit of sun and rain and we are all excited by our gardens again! If you are looking for inspiration, what about a few open gardens this month? We’d love to mention a few that are opening on the 18th and 19th from 10am till 4.30pm: Charlie’s Run – 203 Licola Rd, Heyfield. This picturesque two acre garden surrounds a 100 year old farmhouse, mature trees, lovely lawns, raised perennial beds, bursting with blooms, formal rose gardens and a large dam will have you sitting, relaxing and enjoying the refreshments that are available. Plants are for sale too. The Bee Garden – 14 back Maffra road, Sale. ‘Bee’ amazed at what can be grown in only 7 years! Beautiful beds of old fashioned roses, massed shrubs, rare and unusual perennials fill this garden with a rich variety of colour and fragrance. On a practical note, there is a great orchard and vegetable garden. For fun there are sculptures made from recycled materials. You will leave this 1 ¼ acre garden with a joyous smile on your face. Peta’s Garden – 19 Harpley Crt, Longford. Showcasing Australian plants, this stunning garden is a work of art. Designed to enhance the landscape and embrace the best in Australian natives, there is something of interest all through the year. The lovely waterhole helps create a haven for wildlife. You will see some beautiful sculptures; plant sales and morning/afternoon teas will be available. You will be surprised by the great depth and variety of colour and texture. Sale Botanic Gardens – established in 1860, this Gippsland treasure was influenced by Guilfoyle and Von Mueller. It comprises of 5.5ha adjoining Lake Guthridge. With BBQ facilities, a playground and so much to see, you could spend the day there. So there you go! After seeing these beautiful and distinctively different gardens, you will surely be inspired to get those gloves on and get gardening! Cheers, Nancy
Your local nursery or garden centre will normally carry a good range of seeds, seedlings and ‘certified’ seed potatoes at this time of the year. There are many varieties of tomatoes available: some for small spaces and some for large, some are bushy or ‘clumping’ and some need stakes or a place to run, some are ideal for fresh eating and some are good for preserving. Read the labels and then if you’re still not sure, ask for advice.
MONTHLY JOBS Sow seed of carrots and parsnips, lettuce, peas and spring onions. Carrot seed is very fine and is loved by ants. To stop ants pirating seed mix it with some pepper before you sow it. Mixing some sand with the seed will make it easier to sow the seed more thinly. Plant seedlings of cabbage, silver beet, lettuce. Prepare a spot for your first sowing of beans.

FURTHER NOTES
3rd WEEK
Sow seed of peas and lettuce. Bush beans, sweet corn can be sown in warmer areas of Gippsland. Plant early varieties of tomato if all danger of frost has passed.
4th WEEK
Plant seed potatoes. ‘Certified’ seed potatoes are best as they are certified to be free of diseases that affect potatoes. If you are unable to get ‘certified’ seed you can use pieces of ordinary potatoes. Make sure they have 3-4 ‘eyes’ on them. To reduce the risk of diseases building up in your soil do not plant a new crop of the same thing in the same spot for at least two seasons. Prepare any available areas for later plantings.
