Mumma Goose nests in Stratford Contemporary meets modern in Stratford’s new gift and home wares shop Mumma Goose. Run by mother-daughter duo Jenni and Caitlyn Murphy, Mumma Goose officially opened its doors on December 1 last year with great support from the local community. Located on the Princes Highway Stratford, Mumma Goose stands in prime position for local shoppers, as well as people passing through Victoria’s East Gippsland region. Whether you’re looking to spruce up a dull room, arouse your taste buds with Castlemaine Rock or select the perfect present, Mumma Goose packs a whole lot of love into a modest shop. The homely design allows the customer to envision the bright spotted cushions and one-of-a-kind artworks in their own home. The interior shelving is constructed from recycled garden branches, a wholesome change from traditional wrought iron layouts. For sale items include Ecoya candles, diffusers and hand creams, modernised hanging lamps, leather handbags and wallets, jewellery, baby and children’s clothing, original artwork sourced from local artists, succulent plants, gifts and home wares. “We’re trying to get as much Australian made and designed pieces as we can,” says Caitlyn. “We’ve got a couple of local artists and we’re trying to get more”.
Join us aboard the Rubeena as you travel from the Port Of Sale to the Historic Swing Bridge, cruising quietly observing the wildlife and discovering the history of Sale and surrounds.

Poowong Pickers Sat, 25th October, 9am to 2pm Poowong Pre School
CALL it a town garage sale, bargain hunting, recycling, or upcycling! It doesn’t matter, ‘pickers’ pick items from others junk and see value. It’s about environmental responsibility, community, lots of fun, and the thrill of the hunt! A large number of home owners and community groups have registered to hold simultaneous garage sales on Saturday 25th October between 9am and 2pm. This presents a prime opportunity for bargain hunters, collectors, renovators, sustainable consumers, recyclers, upcyclers, and more! Maps identifying the location of garage sales and the types of items you will find at each sale will be available from the 19th October (one week before the event). Maps can be picked up at various locations around town or obtained by emailing tammylogan@bigpond.com. Registered garage sales can be
identified on the day by signage and balloons of a specific colour.
This year the Pickers Festival is featuring a Suitcase Rummage. This is a great option for kids wanting to make a bit of cash from things they no longer want or if you have only clothing and small items that will fit in a suitcase. Registration for the suitcase rummage is $7 per suitcase (limit of 3 suitcases per person). You must sell your items from your suitcase – no clothes racks or other infrastructure allowed. Contact Tammy if you want to sell at the suitcase rummage. Don’t think you have anything to sell? Think again… Growing awareness of environmental responsibility and financial pressures means all sorts of people are looking for all sorts of things. Also think of artists, collectors, hobbyists, antique and relic hunters, recyclers; someone out there wants your stuff for the right price. If you take it seriously and with a bit of organisation you can
make some good money. On average, last year each sale had 40 plus visitors and 80% of people said they sold a large number of items. The average earnings for sellers was $275 with many people making between $400 to $900 for things they no longer want! There was no difference between those selling from home or from our central location. You’ll also find great food, cold beer, and a friendly atmosphere at the Poowong Hotel! Need a coffee between garage sales? Pick one up at the Poowong Milkbar and Takeaway and the Strzelecki Lions Club are selling BBQ breakfast and lunch from 9am to 2pm. The Poowong Pickers Festival raises funds for the Poowong Pre School to update the outdoor play spaces. For more information and to participate contact Tammy Logan on tammylogan@bigpond.com or 0409 400 156. www.facebook.com/ poowong.pickers.festival
Big Drift at the Prom Sun 21st September, 9.30am Stockyard Campsite carpark, near the Wilsons Promontory Park entrance
TROSP (Tidal River Open Space Project) is designed as a place for local and regional visitors to build community, appreciate and use the spaces that are on their doorstep and support healthy lifestyles. With the aim of optimising the value of existing assets and further cementing Tidal River as the hub of the Prom, members of TROSP (Tidal River Open Space Project) want to tell everyone about this month’s walk, Big Drift sand dunes, at the Prom. The walk starts at the Stockyard Campsite near the park entrance and follows the signposts to the northern flank of Big Drift, an extensive series of inland sand dunes. This walk, which is not very well known, is a 4km (return) ramble from the Stockyard campsite along management vehicle tracks which open onto gigantic sand dunes that would truly have you believe you’re in a desert. This is the perfect time of the year to walk to the Drift because the sand is firm under foot and that definitely makes exploration easier once you reach the dunes. Join the TROSP team for another of their monthly meanders and don’t forget that there will be a sumptuous morning tea when you make it back. Gold coin donation appreciated for the delicious morning tea Email: dana@danahughes.com.au Web: www.dana2688.wix.com/trosp# Right: The Big Drift sand dunes at Wilsons Prom.

Toyed and True
Fri 26 September to Tue 21st October East Gippsland Art Gallery, 2 Nicholson Street Bairnsdale
TOYED and True is about handmade toys – the things children used to play with before the invention of the manufactured toy.
For those who don’t – ask Mums or Dads, even better, Grandparents – what did they play with as children? Dolls, hobby horses, knuckles, tops, tin can stilts, billy carts, wooden pullalongs, cars and planes made from whatever could be found, doll houses and furniture, peg dolls, plaited dolls, blocks, string games, sock horses, handkerchief dolls, puppets – and there must be lots more.
For those of us who remember such a time – make that favourite toy and enter it in this exhibition.
Many nationalities have quite distinctive toys or it could be a toy you have seen while overseas or simply seen an image in a book. There are books on handmade toys to be found in secondhand shops with instructions for building some amazing creations. All newly handmade toys welcome. If you know of CWA groups, Men’s Sheds, Red Cross or any

Light the Night!
Fri 3rd October, 6pm until 9pm Guide Park, Wonthaggi
says Dr Ross Dickens, 2014 Light the Night Ambassador.
BLOOD cancer is a bigger problem than many people realise, there are more than 60,000 people living with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma in Australia today. These blood cancers can develop in anyone, at any age, at any time. They can’t be prevented and while research has improved survival, blood cancer claims more lives than breast cancer or melanoma.
Dr Dickens explains “research is the only way to create a brighter future where everyone with blood cancer can be cured. Money raised through Light the Night supports the Leukaemia Foundation’s National Research program, a multi-million dollar annual investment in the most promising work of Australia’s worldclass blood cancer researchers. We receive no ongoing government funding which is why fundraising is so important.”
With another 31 Australians diagnosed with blood cancer every day, the need to continue the search for cures has never been more urgent. Light the Night helps to fund globally significant breakthroughs. “The Leukaemia Foundation allows Australian researchers to invest heavily in important research questions that would be unachievable with government funding alone.”
Wonthaggi’s first official Light the Night being is on Friday the 3rd of October.

What other lenders are there besides banks? There are also non bank lenders or mortgage managers. IN the past, the only mortgage lenders were banks, credit unions or building societies. More recently, another home loan lender has emerged: the mortgage manager or non bank lender. Credit advisers and mortgage managers – what’s the difference? A credit adviser doesn’t actually lend you money. Their role is to facilitate a loan – helping you choose from a range of lenders.
A mortgage manager or non bank lender, on the other hand, does lend money. Non bank lenders go into the financial markets, obtain funds, and then offer those funds to borrowers at particular terms.
Some companies can be both credit advisers and mortgage managers. They can facilitate loans with traditional lenders like the banks, as well as offering loans where they act as non bank lenders – sourcing the funds themselves. To help find the right bank lender or non bank lender for you, contact your nearest MFAA member.

The Secrets of Nowa Nowa
Nowa Nowa
Magic Nowa Nowa... AT first glance you might think that Nowa Nowa was just another small town “on the way to somewhere else” but visitors are surprised that nothing could be further from the truth. Often a one day planned visit can stretch to a week or more. “What do people do in Nowa Nowa?” is often asked. Well the list is long, you’ll be spoilt for choice! The first obvious destination would be Lake Tyers. Less than 500 metres from the Princes Highway the pristine waterway offers an abundance of choices for holiday makers. Whether it be fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding there is easy access for all. Another little known fact is that swimmers can enjoy thermal pools in the lake (directly out from the boat ramp). For something a little more strenuous head to the Mountain Bike track on the edge of town which boasts 40km of cross country tracks – catering for all levels of cycling ability. Closer to town there is a BMX track and the East Gippsland Rail Trail meanders directly through town – the place is a veritable
cyclists dream. The Nowa Nowa gorge is another must see. This 360 million year old Devonian rock formation is a perfect place to sit and just take in the silence. Of course on a hot day you may just like to take a dip in the crystal waters. Nowa Nowa is one of the richest geological areas in Australia, and gem fossicking along the banks of the Boggy Creek can be a perfect way to spend an afternoon. You may even be lucky enough to find gold. The Stony Creek trestle bridge can be accessed by car, walking or bike and is the largest standing bridge of its type in the southern hemisphere. Built in 1916 and spanning 247 metres and standing 20 metres high you’ll be amazed at the skill of the builders of a bygone era. The Nowa Nowa sculpture walk takes you around the perimeter of the lake, and for the more adventurous the 9.5km Nowa Nowa walk, along the wetlands and via the trestle bridge is an option. Make sure you look out tor the wild orchids along the way.

On your bike
Far left: Spectacular views of Bass Strait at Kilcunda.
WONTHAGGI’S scenic Bass Coast Rail meanders through farmland, coastal bushland, historic coal mining reserves and rugged coastline and offers a truly spectacular panorama of Bass Strait from the Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge at Kilcunda. The Trail also links to the George Bass Coastal Walk at Kilcunda, so it is possible to walk from the Punch Bowl in San Remo all the way to the centre of Wonthaggi. The Bass Coast Rail Trail has recently been extended to Woolamai Race Course from the end of the pre-existing track at Anderson roundabout. The new trail is around 5km’s each way.

The new section from Anderson travels down hill towards Woolamai and has great views looking out over the bay and the surrounding farmland. This brings the total of a return trip from Wonthaggi to about 45km’s.

Food filled with freshness and flavour, delicious coffee and an ever changing range of beautiful artisan products for gifts, or self indulgence. Neerim South – Town of the Month
Creativity celebrated at every turn
T
HE small town of Neerim South, located in the Baw Baw Shire was awarded a Regional Arts Victoria grant in May 2013 to transform the town through the arts, which shouldn’t be too difficult given the high number of quality artists and artisans that have already gravitated to the region. Regional Arts Victoria’s Small Town Transformations funds transformative arts projects that connect to community and place. The Neerim District Progress Association Inc. (NDPA) used the funding to develop the artistic concept “Inspired by Birds”, a striking roadside sculpture that will span the road at the southern entrance to Neerim South. The Bower represents an avenue of attraction, a refuge, and a sense of community and togetherness.

“Mating rituals of the Satin Bower Bird were the inspiration for the Neerim Bower design, developed by artists Phil Henshall, Christine Cochran and Keith Graham with the Progress Association.

The NDPA tendered out the construction of the sculpture earlier this year and awarded it to a local business, Quality Site Welding (QSW). Using a local business has further solidified the camaraderie and passion of the town to support local business and ensure a sustainable future for the district. The project could not have been completed without the support

and dedication of Saferoads who discounted their fees on the Wire Rope Safety Barrier and to Sure Constructions who donated the road works for the verge. Sure Constructions are an integral community business and also worked on the Tarago Gardens over 55’s village and the Tarago Rise Subdivision, two new developments that are happening in Neerim South. A celebration of the achievements of the town over the past year was recently highlighted at the inaugural Arts Festival which ran on Sunday the 26th August. The Festival showcased a year long journey of artistic collaboration, community involvement and artistic expression by locals and artists from further afield. For those who want to get involved in the town’s creative renaissance there are workshops coming up that will inspire your creative juices – ‘Ceramic Birds’ on the 14th of September and ‘Felted Flowers’ on the 19th October. The support and community involvement with the transformation over the past 12 months has been nothing short of amazing. The arts are not the only growth area in this energetic village as a new central focal point in the form of a wetlands precinct is taking shape thanks to a $596,000 grant from the Victorian Coalition Government. Premier Denis Napthine said when he visited the site in July last year that “This project will transform an
Neerim South Wetland Project Gippslanders are encouraged to check out the newly completed Neerim South Wetland on Railway Road in Neerim South. The Neerim South Wetland is a recently completed community-led project which has created a wetland with visitor facilities for the benefit of the community of Neerim South and surrounding districts. Originally developed as a solution for the establishment of a sustainable water supply for irrigating the Neerim South Recreation Reserve during dry periods, the wetland project has created numerous other benefits for the local community. The wetland project features three ponds and a large reservoir with a total water storage capacity of 1.5 million litres. With reinstated native vegetation and significant landscaping it has created a sanctuary in Neerim South. A 2.5 metre footpath surrounding the wetland has been developed for passive recreation purposes, ultimately linking to the town via a scenic path along Red Hill Creek. This project will give Neerim South residents and visitors a place to enjoy the natural environment within walking distance of the main street. The wetland also includes an amenities shelter with BBQ picnic facilities and a public toilet (currently under construction), as well as a boardwalk, bird hide and interpretive signage. The wetland is an $894,000 project. Baw Baw Shire Council contributed $100,000, the Victorian Government $596,000, the Neerim District Community Bank $85,000, Melbourne Water $50,000, while community members have contributed $63,000 through in-kind support.

underutilised part of Neerim South into a natural sanctuary with native plant life, bird watching stations and new interactive signage.” “The wetlands will feature four pools with a combined water storage capacity of 1.5 million litres and the potential to supply at least 7.5 million litres annually to the local community. “One of the most important aspects of the Neerim and District Community Plan is its capacity to strengthen community bonds by creating much-needed open space for residents to meet, relax and enjoy the natural environment,” he said. The project will also include a one kilometre of cycling and walking paths, a community barbeque facilities and seating, educational displays and car parking
“Neerim South is a strong community that is also growing at a rate of nearly 3 per cent per year,” Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood said during last year’s site visit. Local Warragul business Habitat Creations were involved in the landscape design of the wetlands, growing the plants and installing close to 27,000 of them as well as supplying and helping the local community install close to 12,000. Plant species were of local provenance and designed to provide valuable habitat for frogs, birds and aquatic invertebrate, improve water quality by natural bio-filtering processes and enhancing the aesthetic value. Local native aquatic plants are vital for the successful function of
an urban wetland and make up a large part of the wetland system. Wetland vegetation otherwise known as the macrophyte zone supports a complex array of algal and safe bacterial microscopic organisms, known as biofilms that grow on the surface of plants. This zone traps finer sediments and soluble pollutants. The plants use up passing nutrients to grow and help with soil stabilisation to reduce the effects of soil movement. A wellestablished wetland, as this one will be in 12-18 months, allows native plants to reproduce and become a self-sustaining ecosystem. The next time you visit Neerim South you might not recognise the place! The town’s achievements are a testimony to the drive and creative energy that seems to be abundant in this small village.

THE quality of life in Neerim South just keeps getting better. It’s become a creative mecca for the arts, foodies and the environment. One savvy developer is aware of this and is creating a way for locals to retire in style and still maintain their connection to community. Tarago Gardens is the name of the development and it’s unique in that all land and homes are owned by the purchaser as strata titled freehold properties, providing security to sell in the future with no hidden management fees, charges or costs. The township, known for its friendly community and excellent range of facilities, activities and clubs, is just a short distance from Tarago Gardens and has a range of shops and cafes, arts and sporting opportunities and excellent medical facilities including the Neerim District Soldiers Memorial Hospital, a Nursing Home and Medical Centre all close by. It’s a fabulous new option for those ready to downsize. To find out more visit taragogardens.com.au

Finance & Business
Eight steps to website success
Build a quality website to find new customers and boost business Make your website stand out from the crowd by following the steps below to make the right decisions. 1. Get planning Planning will help you create a website for your business that meets your needs and the needs of your customers. You should: ● utilise your business and marketing plans, particularly when budgeting
3. Research website building platforms Ask around and check online forums such as Whirlpool. If necessary, find and choose a high quality website hosting provider. Make sure you: ● have a hosting plan with a Service Level Agreement (SLA) ● avoid hosting with your website designer in case the relationship sours
● set a firm budget and allow for contingencies (minimum $1,000)
● test the customer support channels before purchasing a hosting plan
● choose a great top-level domain name and try to get the .com and .com.au.
The next step is to find and choose a high quality website building platform or Content Management System (CMS). Many hosting providers also offer a CMS. Make sure you test the building platform’s features with your current and potential website, and marketing requirements outlined in your marketing plan.
2. Choose the build You have three options to go with when choosing the design and build of your website, they are: ● hire a web designer: most designers will ask you to fill in a briefing document to help understand your needs ● choose a hosted website building platform: this will lead you through the process of designing your website for a subscription. Make sure it has the functionality you need ● Do-It-Yourself: you’ll have to choose a hosting provider and software platform (content management system) to build your website.
Consider using your website to help streamline your sales process. Think about how your website can capture important information from potential customers or process sales transactions. Fill in a website design brief, even if you’re doing it yourself to make sure you’ve considered everything. You should:
5. Map out your content Writing for the web is very different. You need to map out what content will be needed and what your audience will be looking for in the future. For help on writing for the web check out our tips on write a content marketing plan.
● have navigation that’s usable and consistently placed e.g. an About us link on every page
6. Website optimisation
● avoid Flash and gimmicks that take your customer’s attention away from your content
● works in most browsers e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome
● create an HTML sitemap (a representation of your website’s architecture) ● check your website’s compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
Make sure your website is standards-compliant and:
● is easy-to-read on mobile platforms such as tablets and smartphones ● is fast to load by checking Google’s page speed tools
● is using XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). You can check it’s built correctly using a CSS Validator and XHTML Validator. 7. Engage customers with online marketing A newsletter or email list is often the best way to get people engaged with your web content regularly. Your website should be part of your marketing plan which means considering promoting via: ● the use of online channels such as LinkedIn and Facebook ● the use of offline channels such as groups you belong to or press releases.
Make sure you set up website analytics (Google Analytics is free) so you can test and measure your website marketing efforts. 8. Be secure If you don’t update and protect your website platform you are leaving yourself open to hackers. Some preventative steps include: ● using high-level usernames and passwords (not ‘admin’ and ‘password123’) ● keep your platform software and any plugins/modules up to date ● consider an external security monitoring software above and beyond your website hosting providers. *Source Business Victoria.

SPRING has arrived and at its first meeting for the new season, the Reserve Bank of Australia has announced that it will keep the official cash rate on hold at 2.5 per cent for yet another month. The decision was widely expected by analysts and all indications are that the RBA will continue with its policy of keeping the cash rate at its current low level for the remainder of 2014 and possibly into 2015. The winter property market has been unusually busy across all capital cities. Traditionally, auction numbers and clearance rates slow down during the cooler
months, but this year, auction numbers have remained high and national clearance rates have remained at approximately 72%.
The increased winter activity in our property markets has occurred as a direct result of the low interest rate environment. Lenders are offering some of the most competitive rates on record and there are plenty of excellent loan options available for first home buyers, property investors and those looking to refinance. It looks like we can all look forward to a very busy spring property market ahead! So why
not get ready by talking to us now about your financing? If you’re an investor, we can help you assess your equity position so you’ll be ready to take advantage of the next opportunity. We can also help you with your loan options if you’re a first home buyer or simply looking to refinance. With a very competitive spring selling season ahead of us, there has never been a better time to get your finances organised. Why not give us a call on 03 5175 0411 or refer your family and friends so we can help them with their plans too.

What is CAD?
Damian Anderson Drafting & Design
CAD stands for Computer-aided design and is used in architectural drafting to generate perspective drawings. Today the vast majority of technical drawings of all kinds are made using CAD. Instead of drawing lines on paper, the computer records equivalent information electronically. There are many advantages to this system: repetition is reduced because complex elements can be copied, duplicated and stored for re-use. Errors can be deleted, and the speed of drafting allows many permutations to be tried before the design is finalised.
Professional Service at a Realistic Price. Architectural Drafting, Town Planning Applications, Bushfire Assessments & 6 Star Energy Ratings.
Professional CAD software such as AutoCAD is complex and requires both training and experience before the operator becomes fully productive. CAD is used to create all kinds of drawings, from working drawings to photorealistic perspective views. Architectural renderings (also called visualisations) are made by creating a three-dimensional model using CAD. The model can be viewed from any direction to find the most useful viewpoints.
September in the garden FURTHER NOTES
Spring has officially arrived and with it some very welcome sunny days. As the weather is still unpredictable it is still wise to wait until October before planting summer crops such as tomatoes, beans, pumpkins, etc.
Carrots and parsnips need soil that is well-prepared and fine to get good roots. They do not like fresh manure and will produce ‘forked’ roots if there is too much manure or it is fresh. The only thing wrong with forked roots is that they are more difficult to prepare for eating, otherwise ‘any carrot is better than no carrot’. If you only have shallow soil or are growing carrots in containers try baby ‘carrots’ or the small round varieties.
The soil doesn’t really warm up until mid October but that doesn’t mean you may not have a warm, sheltered spot where you may be able to plant a tomato or two. At least you can start growing your own tomato seedlings in small pots or egg cartons ready to plant out when. Summer crops planted in cold soil will not thrive and will be no further ahead in November than those planted in mid October. Soil thermometers are an inexpensive investment and you will be able to check your soil temperature for the optimum 17°C for planting.
1st WEEK
Ants love carrot seed and many failures with carrot seed ‘germination’ can be attributed to ants taking the seed. Mix pepper with the seed before you plant or sprinkle it along the row after you have sown the seed. This will deter them. Another challenge with germinating carrots is to keep the seed moist as well as the new seedlings when they emerge. This can be helped by placing a damp piece of sacking, an old towel or even a board along the row. Check the row each day and remove the sacking or board when the seedlings emerge. Pay attention to watering of all new seedlings as a warm day or drying wind can dehydrate them easily.
2nd WEEK
Potatoes can be planted right through up until early into the new year. Virus-free ‘seed’ potatoes are best but any potatoes that have started to sprout can be used. I have even had a good crop of ‘spuds’ from potato peelings that were buried in the garden.
