Oscar Anton Izquierdo

DYNAMIC LOCAL politician Oscar Anton Izquierdo has been kicked out of his party by an ‘ad hoc’ disciplinary panel over allegations he conspired with rivals. The expulsion of the popular serving councillor from Nueva Javea has sent shockwaves through the party faithful in the Marina Alta town. Oscar continues to deny he ever met with the Partido Popular to discuss possible alliances – and was the victim of a partisan committee backing NJ President Ana Vasbinder. And founder members from the expat community – the party was formed to represent Javea’s international population – believe his only sin was to relay the growing feeling at grass roots there should be a change in leadership. In a case of shooting the messenger, Oscar, a lawyer by profession, was first suspended and finally expelled – reducing the NJ pres-

ence at Javea Town Hall to three. This week RTN met Oscar and supporters as the affair hit the headlines in the Spanish press. Insiders acknowledged Ana Vasbinder was a hard working councillor and politician but said there was growing evidence she was “not popular” and questioning her leadership skills. RTN was told the numbers of volunteers ready to work for the party was dropping off and it became apparent the problem was the president. “That is why there was a question whether Ana was the right leader to go into the next elections,” said one member. Oscar, as a Spanish councillor attracting Spanish votes, was chosen to relay the mood to his leader – explaining the best way forward. “I did not want to start a civil war and I spoke with Ana personally – she told me she understood everything but she was going to be president and if anyone wanted to take that away there must be an AGM,” he said.
