Apocalypse Haiti Tens of thousands of people are feared dead in the catastrophic devastation of the Haiti earthquake as an international rescue operation gets underway. by Jack Troughton IN SCENES described as “Armageddon”, bodies of the dead and injured were lying in the debris of Port-auPrince, the densely populated capital of this desperately poor Caribbean country. The quake – the worst for more than 120 years and measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale - struck the island at 5pm local time on Tuesday, flattening homes, schools, hospitals, slums, as well as the presidential palace and government buildings. Spain has joined Britain and other European countries in sending rescue teams and pledged millions in much needed aid to Haiti. Relief began arriving on the stricken island’s still usable airport within hours. Continued on page 4
