Animals need ark royal

ANIMAL SANCTUARY Noah’s Ark has sent out an SOS to help raise money to move to a new home and continue its work offering a refuge to unwanted and abandoned exotic animals.

Currently based at a temporary home El Roal, Alicante, it is currently “bursting at the seams” and packed with animals brought to Spain as pets or rescued from circuses and other so-called attractions.

Now an ideal new site has been identified in the inland mountains surrounding Tibi but funds are needed to make the move.

Until three years ago Noah’s Ark was based in Guadalest and was a popular attraction but the sanctuary was forced to close and its menagerie of lions, tigers, pumas, jaguars, bears, monkeys, reptiles and a host of birds faced an uncertain future.

Fruitless protest

by Jack Troughton ANGRY PROTESTERS have been left with a sour taste in their mouths after the promised return of much-loved orange trees to a town centre failed to come to fruition.

The trees lined Calpe’s Avenida Gabriel Miro for over 30 years but were moved to allow the street to enjoy an upgrade including pavement widening as part of an EU regeneration project.

Months of work have ended but despite at least three petitions to the town hall from environmental groups the fruit trees have been replaced with 100 plane tree saplings.

The surviving Seville orange trees will be replanted in Calpe Old Town but residents say described the change as “a disgrace” and said the street had been robbed of its character.

Linda Morrell-Vessey, who lives in Avenida Gabriel Miro and works in the animal charity shop known as ‘the Dog Shop’, was one of the petitioners and said she was personally assured by the previous mayor the trees would be returned.

“The trees added a bit of colour to the street and tourists loved them, stopping to take pictures with them,” she told RTN. He said: “Our sanctuary for exotic animals is bursting at the seams. Our residents urgently need to move to a larger site that gives them the quality of life they deserve.

“Although these animals have been saved from imminent danger, they still face an uncertain future.”

“The new plane trees are just sticks at the moment, although I am told they grow very quickly. We already have them in other Calpe streets. They shed their leaves, make a mess and people slip on them.

“You can already see how they grow very tall and into the balconies of people’s apartments if they are not kept cut back. They are also home to a lot of bugs and some people are allergic to the trees.”

Linda added: “I am not happy at all but this is now a fait accompli – although it goes against people’s wishes – and replanting the orange trees in the Old Town was like rubbing salt into the wounds. This was a stupid and unnecessary move.”

She said she could envisage a string of accidents happening in the future if fallen leaves remained on the pavement because the road was so steep. “There could be a string of medical bills being taken to the town hall.”

Calpe Town Hall accepted the original idea was to return the orange trees but the architect had increased the number of trees in the street to create a shaded walk way and seating areas.

A spokesman pointed out that orange trees were up to six times more expensive than the replacements – and the New saplings surviving fruit trees were being used in other areas.

There are more than 100 animals at Noah’s Ark and amongst the three most recent arrivals are three tigers left abandoned at a landfill site by a circus.

“The sanctuary at the moment gets no official aid or government funding. We are

not allowed to welcome visitors – entrance fees that could help with running costs are forbidden,” said Raul.

“However, if we succeed in relocating, we can finally open our doors to the public and everyone can come and see the work we do and get to know our animals. These animals have been through so much.”

Raul, who also works to help domestic cats and dogs, said all the animals at Noah’s Ark deserved to be protected.

As an example, he said there was a Bengal Tiger formerly “enslaved” in a circus before being abandoned. “He is an innocent, helpless victim, who has surely earned the right to spend the rest of his

days in peace.”

But he said he believed the days of animals being forced to perform with circuses were limited as people’s attitudes changed – but it was happening too slowly.

He said Noah’s Ark would continue to save and protect animals considered “useless” by the travelling shows.

“The lives and future of many of these creatures depends on whether people want to help them move into a speciesappropriate new home,” he added.

Cyprus’ remedy no cure TROUBLED CYPRUS swallowed its bitter pill on Monday but savers across Europe fear their cash could be at risk in future bailouts as recession gloom mounts.

by Jack Troughton Financial markets were spooked over suggestions the controversial rescue deal for the beleaguered island could become a template for new intervention in the eurozone.

A raid on all savings had been proposed as part of the Cyprus deal – a proposed 6.75% tax on deposits of less than 100,000€ and 9.9% on those above that threshold.

However, an 11th hour agreement protected accounts in Cyprus of under 100,000€, although higher deposits are frozen and could be hit with a levy of at least 30%.

In an initial response to the highly controversial move to tax savings, Spain’s Economy Minister Luis de Guindos promised bank deposits under 100,000€ were “sacred”.

“The position of the Spanish government is that you have to respect deposits of under 100,000€, these deposits are sacred. Spanish savers should stay calm.”

And the politician said the turbulence in the financial markets triggered by the Cyprus emergency would soon calm down – underlining that Spain was now “on a positive track”.

But Madrid’s position will do little to ease

the growing suspicions that government is to tax offshore assets worth more than 50,000€ – including those held by expats classed as ‘tax residents’ in Spain.

People currently have to comply with an asset declaration by 30th April. Critics say the move could be the first steps towards a “cash grab” to fill government coffers.

Influential Spanish newspaper El Pais commented on the Cyprus emergency this week: “Is the cure worse than the illness?”

It pointed out overall EU public debt was rising because of bailouts yet the problems of the banks had not been solved and were creating “huge instability” while austerity policies were producing yet more recession and unemployment.

The newspaper said the moves to tax bank deposits in Cyprus was “one of the most effective ways of generating mistrust not only in the banks but in the whole system of authority that is supposedly coping with the crisis in the eurozone.”

It added that “to play with people’s savings is a very dangerous game, and not only in Cyprus” and called for a change in policies to allow the eurozone as a whole to climb out of crisis.

New destinations for Alicante’s El Altet Airport…

EL ALTET is to offer 15 new destinations from April representing a traffic increase of 500,000 passengers. It is hoped that the boost will help alleviate the loss of one million passengers in 2012 following the collapse of Spanair. 84% of the passenger traffic is comprised of foreign travellers – a symptom of the economic crisis in Spain. Traffic to Scandinavia and Russia has increased by 88%.

TOWN HALLS across the Costa Blanca have been represented at the Moscow International Travel and Tourism fair hoping to tempt more Russian visitors to Spain.

Calpe, Denia and Javea all took stands at the 20th annual event which was expected to attract 90,000 visitors to tour around the 3,000 exhibitors.

Tour operators believe Spain will benefit from a growth of around 35% in the number of Russian visitors in the coming year – holidaymakers seeking warm sunny beaches with modern and upmarket hotels and villa accommodation.

Island hop

by Jack Troughton DENIA HAS become an essential bridge between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands with the VIP opening of a 20 million euro passenger terminal.

Alberto Fabra, president of the Valencia Community, officially opened the new port facility – a key public-private investment that cost taxpayers just over 10 million euros.

The three floor facility, which houses the ferry company Balearia offices, shops, restaurants, and leisure facilities, was described as a model of sustainability and “a door to the islands”.

Mr Fabra concluded Denia was in a more

strategic position than the massive port of Valencia “from a tourist point of view” because it was closer to the island group.

And Ana Kringe, Mayor of Denia, underlined how the town was key to development of the whole of the Marina Alta. “Denia has established itself as a bridge between the mainland and the Balearic Islands”. She maintained the “big step” forward would not be finished until a rail link was established along the coast between Alicante and Valencia.

Innocent victims

By Jack Troughton Six puppies have been rescued after being dumped in a cardboard box next to rubbish bins in Calpe.

Residents of Calpe Park watched a vehicle stop at the bins and deposit the box containing the litter – the dogs believed to be less than a month old.

The pups have been rescued by council workers, given a clean bill of health, and it is now hoped to find them loving homes.

Testing the water!

SOON YOU will be able to check out the sea temperature in Benidorm without dipping your toe in the water! The city plans to test the temperature of the sea water with a probe in order to post the information on the internet

throughout the year. It is hoped that the information will promote tourism not only in summer but also in winter, “…when the sea is often warm enough to swim,” says Health Councillor Maria Angeles Valdivieso. The waters off the

coast of Benidorm have tested consistently at a 15º average in winter and 27º in summer.

The probe will be installed in the Playa del Mal Pas, “somewhere between Levante and Poniente” with website information yet to be advised.

Landmark buildings in cities all over the world shut off the lights including Moscow’s Kremlin; New York’s Empire State Building; the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame in Paris and The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower lights went off on time but were switched back on five minutes later due to ‘security issues’.

Isabelle Autissier, president of the World Wildlife Fund in France, said: “It is not just about saving a few kilowatts of energy - the message is about climate change and changing your way of life to conserve global energy.”

Pregnant and well blessed ON SUNDAY the Archbishop of Valencia, Monsignor Carlos Osorio, held a blessing for pregnant women at the Catedral Basilica Metropolitana de Valencia. He also gave his blessing to children under age two who came with their families. The celebration was held to mark the Day of Life, this year held under the theme ‘Love the whole of life’.

Church bells in Monóvar drop a clanger

THE CLAPPER of the church bells of San Juan Bautista in Monóvar, weighing 10k – 15k, caused a stir when it fell off again on Palm Sunday. It fell 40 meters from the bell tower on the stroke of 11am, exactly 15 minutes before the blessing and the start of the procession. Fortunately no one was injured. The area was cordoned off so that technicians could examine the bell tower. The clapper bounced off the wall of the tower before crashing to the ground below. This is the second such incident – the clapper fell off the tower a couple of years ago onto the car bonnet of the parish priest.

by Jack Troughton DETERMINED PENSIONER Shirley Mulholland is fighting to cash in a valuable investment being managed by financial company Centurion Administration Services.

The Reading-based company holds around £13,000 of her capital but she says repeated requests for the repayment of the money have been met with failure.

This week Centurion admitted a flat market had meant any redemption payments to anyone had been put on ice to protect all investors – and apologised to its frustrated Costa Blanca client.

Shirley, who lives in Javea, bought into the Argent Fund about seven years ago and took an income option after a friend assured her it was a safe investment.

And for a time she would receive a “useful” premium every year. She said the fund bought up life insurance policies being surrendered early and made money by holding them until they matured – or sold them on in a competitive market.

“Two years the payments stopped. I contacted Centurion and asked for some money and they refused – apparently the company had paid out to buy some large investments and that had broke the bank – that does not appear to be good management to me,” she told RTN. “After a lot of badgering they did pay me £5,000 but after that there was nothing. The last communication I had from

them was the fund manager was not going to pay out more until they sold some investments or bonds or something.”

She added: “My overall investment is now £13,000, it is not a lot of money to a financial company and you would think they could pay out such a small sum.”

Shirley said she had constantly contacted Centurion. “I am very annoyed. I just want to nag them and let them know I have not forgotten and still want my money.

“But they just try and fob me off and say the manager has not made up his mind whether to release any funds. At one point they said I might get the money in five years but I might be dead by then. It is not a fortune but worth a lot to me.”

A spokesman for Centurion said it was hoped to release Shirley’s funds as soon as possible and she had already been labelled as an “exceptional case” highlighted to be given priority.

RTN was told the market was currently very slow and fund managers were “restricting” redemptions to protect all share holders but it was hoped to sell policies as soon as possible.

“We hope to receive some premium financing in order to pay out soon. I am aware of Shirley’s position and understand she is worried and she is one of the special cases being discussed by fund managers,” added the spokesman. “But it is a matter of timing and the market is not ideal right now and we do have to protect all our clients.”

Clunk-click campaign

By Jack Troughton DRIVERS AND passengers are being warned that seat belts save lives after a Costa Blanca study discovered in 8% of vehicles no restraints were used.

Wearing a seat belt is a basic element of road safety and cuts the death toll in traffic accidents by half.

Denia police mounted the research earlier

this month in an operation with road safety bodies and the traffic department and found in 8.23% no approved protection was used at all.

The worst offenders were drivers of private cars, 15.53%, and in goods vehicles just over 9% - yet every taxi driver was found to have belted up.

And the campaign found that all children in vehicles were correctly wearing suitable and approved restraints for their age and height.

The road safety campaign highlights the need to use seat belts and restraints on short and long journeys. It aims to get people to habitually clunk-click.

Drivers and passengers were also warned that airbags are designed to be used in tandem with a seat belt and in a frontal impact the chances of an unbelted back seat passenger killing someone in the front seat is eight times higher.

One rule omitted from the Highway Code WHEN I got to the age of 86, I thought that after living and working in 35 countries and on 18 different islands that I had done and seen everything… I was wrong.

One day I drove behind a UK registered car onto a roundabout when suddenly the car in front stopped. As I applied my brakes I saw a young lady get out of her car, leave the engine running and the door wide open and walk off the roundabout to the local bank on the corner, where I presume she drew out some money from the cash point.

I could, of course, have driven round the car but was so intrigued that I sat and watched what she was going to do next.

She walked back to the car, ignoring me completely, threw the handbag on to the front seat and drove away. I think there is one rule omitted from the Highway Code… Do not leave your vehicle running with the door wide open on a roundabout! Robert York

Energy Performance Certificate

DO YOU know anything about the new law coming into force in Spain 1st June this year that says everybody will need to have an Energy Performance Certificate on their home?

I have been trying to find out about it but there does not seem to be much information anywhere that gives all the answers. Would it be possible to find out what is going on and maybe print something about it? I have looked through some of the Spain forums and have found some information but if this really is going to be a new law then surely there should be more information about something that will affect so many people.

Who is the pauper of Europe?

RE RTN’s story concerned a Spanish worker who paid contributions for 10 years working in Spain and 5 years while working in Portugal: She applied and was granted a Spanish State Pension from the start of 2006.

The minimum entitlement for a contributory pension in Spain is 15 years.

Spanish social services took in her 10 years of payments in Spain but gave her a zero rate for her 5 years in Portugal.

This meant for her 10 years’ payment in Spain she received a reduced monthly State Pension of 337€. She demanded that her 5 years’ contributions paid in Portugal be included in the calculation – this would have increased her benefit to 864€.

Is there more to this story than readers are being told?

The way I and many more people read this story is that in Spain, for fifteen years of working, contributions from one’s wages, one (in this case a lady) is entitled to 864€ Spanish State Pension per month: that is approximately £750!

I do not know of one UK retired worker who receives that much monthly State Pension from the UK benefits system – especially having paid only 15 years’ contributions. For those male Brits over 65-years-old now, most had to work and pay for 44 years to qualify for State Pension! If they missed an annual contribution they had to make it up. Many worked for 50 years (48 years if they did national service) but received no extra for those contributions over and above 44 years. In the case of UK females who are now retired their situation is even worse!

If Spanish workers can receive monthly State Pensions of 864€ (£750) for 15 years of contributions, there cannot be many poor Spanish Pensioners.

On that basis it is the British state pensioner who, having worked and paid into the UK system for 44 years and who may receive a UK State Pension of approximately £650 (730€) per month who is the pauper of Europe?

A shade too subtle RE: TUBBY Tamworth: I fear that the humour of The Guardian is a shade too subtle for many and that includes both the good people of Tamworth and Paul Watts. In his ‘Watts in Britain’ article he castigates Sarah Boseley of that newspaper for singling out Tamworth in her piece about the obesity epidemic in UK. True, she could have chosen almost any town in Britain but how many of them have given their name to a famous breed of pig, the porcine variety that is. Did no one think that that was just a little too co-incidental? Ken Bethell, Puerto de Mazarron

Who are we to argue?

WITH REGARD to residents within Spain having now to declare assets from outside of Spain, i.e. UK as regards British nationals, my wife and I are in this category and whilst we enjoy our life here we don’t like what will happen.

If there is a chance that the Spanish authorities wish to change their laws who are we to argue? However, I noticed in one of your editions that a reader advised everyone to ignore what is about to happen, remarking: “They can’t send everyone to prison who refuses to comply, can they?”

Maybe not, but they can impose fines on everyone eventually! I suspect he is an immigrant that has not applied for residency as this is what is going to bring to light who is residing in Spain without declaring it.

Having done some checking online I found that there is a Dual Taxation Treaty between the UK & Spain. There is a possibility that on declaring your assets the HMRC will refund the income tax back to individuals if you have to pay in Spain. This can be done by going online to HMRC for the rel-

evant information/application forms.

Click on ‘income tax’. From there the relevant information can be found under the headings below: Double Taxation Treaties Income Tax when leaving the UK, 1/4 Heading UK double taxation treaties - countries with agreements 4/4 UK allowances for non-residents: full details Personal Allowances Applications and claims by non-residents under double taxation treaties 3/4 Under Spain, download application forms in English and a copy for the Hacienda (Spanish Tax Office) (There are 16 pages in all for the application forms).

This also applies to people who have companies within UK, even though they reside in Spain - there are application forms for this.

Feeding the hungry HARD WORKING charity volunteers caring for hungry families will get a 700€ boost thanks to the success of a fund-raising spring fair held last weekend.

by Jack Troughton The cash is being donated to the Harvest Store in Javea by the organisers of the ‘Spring into Summer’ health beauty fair at the Inn on the Green.

The event was organised by High Street Heaven’s Nicola Franklin who was determined to help the work of the Harvest Store’s founders Peter and Tricia Cox supporting more than 108 families - more than 350 adults and 150 children.

Nicola said the shop had been able to help a number of different charities during the four years it had been opened at the Inn on the Green by running a series of events such as fashion shows and fairs. “We always align ourselves with a charity so someone can benefit”.

She said people were charged 1€ entrance to the fair and also encouraged to buy raffle

tickets or have a go at a number of traditional attractions like tombola.

“I think I first heard of the Harvest Store because I was told of the good work Peter and Tricia were doing helping disadvantaged families in the area,” said Nicola. “I just thought ‘there for the grace of God go I’ and let’s do something to help.

“I didn’t realise that there were so many people unfortunate enough to maybe lose their jobs or lose their incomes and the fact there is no help available in Spain for most people.

“It means that these families are relying on other people’s good will and charity to feed them.”

The Harvest Store is based in Javea Port Market and has a number of collection boxes in the town where people can donate nonperishable food.

Whenever I first started in practice like most people I assumed the most common phobia I would treat would be either mice or spiders. However this was not the case.

The most common phobia that I would treat is Blushing (eureuthophobia ) where I would see quite a few people per day with this devastating phobia.

A phobia is a totally irrational fear of people, places, objects or a potential situation.

How a phobia can affect a person can vary greatly. It may be they prefer just to ignore it, to whereby in the phobic situation their heart starts beating very fast, perhaps a feeling of sickness, dryness of the mouth, tension, becoming breathless, to even a feeling of fainting.

For whatever reason a person develops a phobia it can completely take over their life.

They are constantly thinking about it and

will create scenarios in their mind on how to avoid the phobic situation. Even if they do have to face it, how are they going to react at that time, or will they make a complete fool out of themselves etc. The list is endless!

Put simply, a phobia is an outward projection of an internal anxiety. It can be created in many ways such as in severe stress, excessive anxiety caused by a recurring experience, or maybe by a past trauma.

There are various methods that can be used to overcome a phobia using hypnosis.

Regression therapy (not past life regression) The Client is regressed to try to locate the origin of their phobia and to understand what the circumstances were that created it, and then remove the anxiety associated with it. This can take quite a few sessions to try to achieve using standard Hypnotherapy, perhaps up to 15 sessions.

Fast Track Suggestion Therapy A method created by me where positive suggestions are implanted into the subconscious mind to counteract their fears and alter the perception of their particular phobia. I prefer to use the latter method, Fast Track Suggestion Therapy, as in my opinion it is the faster and a more effective way of dealing with any phobia.

When I am talking to a client for the first time I like to explain my Fast Track

Hypnosis method further. I would use the example of someone who watches a horror film on television, their conscious mind sees the image, and their subconscious mind reacts towards this image making the viewer become frightened. Obviously the image is totally unreal as it is only projected onto a piece of glass. In my view that is exactly how a phobia works!

The conscious mind sees an image (real or imagined) such as a spider, and the subconscious reacts towards the image taking it totally out of proportion causing a feeling of panic. Using the calming effects of the Fast Track Hypnosis method the subconscious mind is allowed see the phobia in a very funny way. The theory behind this is quite simple, by laughing at their phobia, they can not be frightened of it, and if they are not frightened of it, it goes away.

The process normally takes only 4 sessions depending on the response and commitment from the client as opposed to the “1000 hour analysis “ method used by psychologists , conventional Hypnotherapists, etc., however with the use of Fast Track Hypnosis it dramatically speeds up the whole process.

CDs are also provided to reinforce the ongoing results as the client progresses and finally they are taught self-hypnosis to give positive suggestions to themselves without the use of CDs. Many people want to overcome their

phobias, and after helping thousands of clients over the years to successfully conquer theirs, I decided to compile a list of as many phobias as I could and their technical name. This originally was a personal interest but the list just kept getting larger, and you can view the complete list on my web site alangilchrist.com.

As you will be able see from the list it becomes evident that people can suffer a phobia about almost anything, from the supposedly common ones such as spiders -arachnophobia to the totally unusual e.g. the fear of long words which is called Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (common in journalism). This in itself would give the poor phobic person another phobia Phobophobia, a phobia of having a phobia!

round the meal table, although I have accepted that if you really want to enjoy a meal in Spain you need six to share a variety of dishes.

Once you reach a ‘certain age’ you are inevitably going to attend more funerals than weddings, or christenings, and if you live an expat lifestyle in or around a retirement community it is only to be expected that there will be a higher than average number of funerals.

But I am not being flippant with the headline to this column: I can recall 14 funerals in the last six months and not one by natural causes - aka old age. Again it is to be expected that expats with existing medical conditions opt for the sunshine, but even taking those into account it is staggering how many funerals there have been.

Of course living in a marina with 60 plus bars, cafes and restaurants doesn’t help: nor does falling into the marina when drunk!

So the DGT want the Government to raise the speed limit to 130kph on motorways and reduce it to as low as 20kph on other roads. How stupid!

120kph is fast enough. I don’t believe that everyone is capable of driving at 130kph for sustained periods.

It takes more concentration and requires faster reaction times.

Surely if they are happy to have people drive at 130kph why not leave the speed limit at 120kph rather than tempt/encourage people to drive faster and just have a no fine policy up to 130kph?

And have you ever tried to drive at 20kph? It is virtually impossible to drive that slow and keep your eyes on the road. Try it if you don’t believe me. You are either continually changing gear or watching the speedometer to check your speed.

That can’t be safe?

And finally ... thanks for the emails regarding previous columns. To be honest I spend a lot of time driving through the void that is France so it is refreshing to know I am not writing into a void as well.

Groups were taken to Cala Llebeig – known as the Smuggler’s Cove – and the Marsh of Senillar to learn about the water cycle, the role of wetlands and how a diverse unique range of flora and fauna is supported by them.

She attended the last meeting of the branch at the Bolero Bar, Calpe, and staged a question and answer session about town hall and private matters affecting both the town and Spain in general.

The Calpe branch of the Legion meets every Friday at 11.30am in the Bolero Bar and Restaurant, La Fossa Beach.

Benidorm spruced up for Easter THE DEPARTMENT of the Urban Scene for Benidorm has begun a project that focuses on the image of the city in preparation for what is predicted will be yet another successful Easter trade.

200 trees have been planted in 16 of the city’s streets, along with hundreds of ornamental plants. In addition a number of buildings have received a facelift and the municipal gardeners are cleaning up several roundabouts and fountains.

Ambulance appeal cruises on A NEW state of the art ambulance should be delivered to the Red Cross in Alicante within weeks by generous Freemasons – the first fruit of an appeal by the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia for its 2014 festival.

by Jack Troughton On Monday the Charity Shop of Moraira and the Association of the Masonic Home of Valencia put another 2,500€ into the pot and the appeal total has now passed the 100,000€ milestone.

Stuart Macdonald, the Right Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master, told RTN said a deposit of 50,000€ had been paid on the first ambulance.

“It will cost around 80,000€ in total and it is a very special vehicle. It is an ambulance designed for transporting severely handicapped people and severely injured people,” he said.

“We hope to present it to the Red Cross in the next six to eight weeks and want to stage a special ceremony at Hercules Football Club in Alicante.”

Changes in the articles of association for the charity shop and the fund raising for a retirement home have allowed donations to be made to other charities and good causes.

In the last 12 months more than 28,000€ has been given to various causes. Including the ambulance appeal, money has been used to prevent two people going blind, to the Bay Radio appeal for the children at the Preventorio de Gandia, Teulada-Moraira social services, and the Friends of the children of EMAUS. Elche to provide social housing for needy families ELCHE COUNCIL plans to provide social housing, prioritising those who have lost their homes as a result of the economic crisis.

The Regional Director General of Public Works, Housing and Urban Projects, Vicente Dómine, announced on Tuesday that an

agreement between the city of Elche and the government will be signed shortly, launching a programme of social leasing on homes for needy families. It has been confirmed that during the first phase of the project enquiries have already begun

into individual case studies for applicants that qualify for housing under the new system and whether the accommodation should be given free of charge or for a nominal rent. As yet, however, no availability deadline has been given.

Can we have our helicopter back?

FIRE PROVINCIAL Fire Consortium has criticised the government’s withdrawing of the services of the province’s rescue helicopter, calling the decision “ineffective and inefficient.” At a meeting last Friday Fire Fighters pointed out that although helicopter services were available from the forest brigade and also a SAMU medical helicopter, neither aircraft are equipped with the aerial lift equipment that is vital for rescue services.

Línea Directa reports on driving in winter LÍNEA DIRECTA is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits.

Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions.

WITH RESPECT TO THE CAR: Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and brake fluid, antifreeze and oil levels.

Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres, including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm.

Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.

WITH RESPECT TO DRIVING: If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds.

If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding.

Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity.

When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

Semana Santa underway

2013 marks the twenty-ninth Anniversary of the Semana Santa celebration in Torrevieja and the ninth time that the International Los Costaleros, have carried their ‘Throne’ through the streets. Monday night was the ‘warm up’ for tomorrow’s Good Friday main event and all went well and to plan, although the pasos took almost an additional hour longer to complete the route, for no apparent reason. The weather on the night turned out to be very pleasant and an estimated 7,000 or so people took to the streets to applaud and cheer everyone on.

The International Cofradia carrying the Paso of Nuestro Padre Jesús en la Oración del Huerto de los Olivos (Jesus in the Garden of Olives) receive a huge amount of respect from the residents of Torrevieja because until the International Community banded together to form Los Costaleros, forming what was the first International Cofridia of its kind, the 1,600 kilos that the Throne weighs, was pushed through the streets, as it normally requires 100 strong men to lift it and walk with it for the five hours that the Good Friday procession generally takes. On Good Friday, all 15 Paseos take to the streets, starting at 7.30 pm and finishing after midnight, when an expected 10,000 spectators

are expected in the centre of town. This year, Los Costaleros celebrated the fact that they still have 15 members of the brotherhood who have carried in all processions and all of whom are looking forward to the milestone tenth anniversary.

On Friday the processions start at the Inmaculada Concepción Church and includes the participation of the major cofradías: ‘Convocatoria y Mujer Samaritana’, ‘Nuestro Padre Jesús en la Última y Sagrada Cena’, ‘Nuestro Padre Jesús en la Oración del Huerto de los Olivos’, ‘Santísimo Cristo de la Flagelación, Santísima Virgen de la Estrellas, Reina de los Ángeles; y San Judas Tadeo’, ‘San Pedro Arrepentido’, ‘Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo (El Nazareno)’, ‘Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Caida’, ‘Santa Mujer Verónica’, ‘Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza y de la Paz’, ‘Cristo Crucificado y María Santísima del Silencio’, ‘Nuestra Señora de la Piedad’, ‘Santo Sepulcro (Yacente)’, ‘San Juan Evangelista’ and ‘Nuestra Señora de los Dolores’. From the Church, this longest of routes follows the course of Plaza de la Constitución, Caballero de Rodas, Patricio Pérez, Ramón Gallud, Del Mar, Cabellero de Rodas, Plaza de la Constitución and finishes back at the Templo Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción.

Easter’s Torrevieja Cup 2013 begins today

By Keith Nicol THE YOUTH Football Tournament ‘The Torrevieja Cup’ returns to the ‘City of Salt’ this week. It’s an international football tournament, which seeks to combine football with tourism and entertainment, promote coexistence among the players and their families and to promote athletic endevour. The tournament will take place on 28, 29, 30 and 31 March with more than 1,200 players, 200 technicians and 80 people on hand organizing this event, which attracts more than 5,000 visitors daily.

Players pick up their welcome packs from Habaneras where they will also be a party with performances on Saturday at 7:00pm. The tournament kicks off on Thursday 28 March at 5:30pm, starting with a parade from the Plaza of the Constitution along the Vistalegre where all 23 teams are presented to the public, both male and female, in seven categories, prebenjamín, alevin, juvenile, infantile, cadet, Benjamin and women.

Competing teams are from Alicante: C.F. Torrevieja, Elche C.F., Promesas Elche C.F., Rafal-Estucados Real, C.F. La Coca de Aspe, Pablo Iglesias, Hércules Femenino, Elche C.F. Femenino, C.D. The new European law regarding declaration of your worldwide assets by

HAVING LISTENED with total shock to the saga of Cyprus, with all the implications of what the raid on people’s savings will do, I ask myself a question, along with I am sure, many others, what if it happened here in Spain? How frightening to think that our precious savings, which already have been taxed, can just be stolen by our governments to help support their particular economy, which is in desperate trouble along with some of their banks.

Absolutely amazing isn’t it, when the politicians and bankers make mistakes, and haven’t a clue how to resolve them, other than to increase the taxes or steal from us. We seem to be just pawns in a huge sea of men and woman with immense power. I fail to understand how by imposing more taxes on us until we have no spare cash to spend, can possibly help to extricate us from the ongoing crisis.

In Spain, many of you will have heard that one is now obliged to declare your worldwide assets - anything in excess of 50,000€, to include, investments, shares, deposits, property, etc. I understand this information has to be presented at the latest by 30th April. There is nothing to pay on this declaration tax wise; it is simply a check that the money laundering laws are being adhered to. All European countries have the same obligations to declare these funds, under EU law.

If you happen to have a larger amount you may be in serious trouble if you do not complete this declaration, as it may be considered fraud. It is in fact monitored worldwide by organisations like Interpol because it is

global. They are able at any stage to check if any money laundering is occurring and black money is deposited from organised crime, drugs etc which of course, as we mentioned above, is classed as fraud, which is a very serious offence and the fines can be extortionate.

That is why it is essential to complete this form, especially if you have funds above 120,000€ as the fine will be even larger. A Gestor will present these papers on your behalf at a very reasonable price.

Farewell Steve and Evie Suffield MEMBERS OF the Hondon Valley Branch of the Royal British Legion have said farewell to long serving members Steve and Evie Suffield.

by Jack Troughton Steve had carried the branch’s standard for many years and the couple is leaving the area to live nearer the coast.

Warrant Officer Neil Parvitt has agreed to take over Steve’s role as Standard Bearer and former naval diver Alan Reed will now carry the Union Jack at official engagements.

The next branch event is the Poppy Walk on 19th April.

The 10km walk starts from Restaurante Veintiocho at 10am and returns to the restaurant where a 13€ ‘menu del dia’ will be on offer.

Quiz provides charity answer

By Jack Troughton BRAIN TEASERS attracted more than 100 people to the now annual Teulada-Moraira Lions club quiz night after a flurry of ticket sales.

Last Friday’s event at the Gemisant Restaurant in Moraira saw club member Harold Lewis again take the role of quizmaster while the solutions were provided by his wife Viola – and an intriguing mix of questions and pictures to keep everyone both entertained and scratching their heads.

The night raised over 900€ towards Lion’s funds to be spent helping needy people in the local community – raffle ticket sales alone making 450€.

And pictured is Lion Frank Povey with the difficult task of keeping tabs on everyone’s scores on the night – not an easy job with 19 teams taking part.

The next Teulada-Moraira Lions event is a sixties and seventies themed dinner dance at the La Sella Marriott Hotel on 26th April. The crisis: it’s not all bad news!

SPAIN IS positively thriving when it comes to tourism Government statistics published September 2012 say 7.9 million tourists arrived during the peak vacation month of August, 5% up year-on-year compared to 2011 and around 200,000 more than in the previous record month, July. The largest jump in arrivals was from Russia, with a 47.5% increase, followed by neighbouring France at 17.5%. The biggest number of tourists—1.9 million, 24.1% of the market—came from Britain.

It would appear that in times of economic crisis most people are even more determined to have a holiday in order to offset the hard times they are experiencing in their home countries which is good news for everyone renting out their properties!

IT’S APRIL on Monday and at last frosts should be past for everyone so Spring gardening can begin in earnest for those with gardens and also those restricted to apartment terraces and balconies. And don’t let’s forget windowsills around the house and on the street for village houses.

Annuals can now be safely planted but do ensure you plant them in rich water retentive compost/soil mixes. The mixing in of a half teaspoon of TerraCottem gel-based soil improver will pay for itself in reduced watering needs and fewer plant losses. It is also a good time to sow the seeds of such annuals as Zinnias and Marigolds. If you have a veggie garden sow Zinnias as a large patch for cutting and a line of Marigolds to attract Blackfly and deter insects, especially Asparagus Beetle and White Fly. While on the subject of beneficial, companion planting a pot or patch of Basil plants can help deter flies, beetles and mosquitoes. Likewise

Mint plants can help deter ants, aphids, Cabbage Butterfly and mosquitoes.

Thinking of ants, remember our advice last year to dust natural yellow sulphur powder (azufre in Spanish) around nest entries and on lines of crawling ants. This is less expensive and safer than using ant killing chemicals products.

Perennial plants and shrubs can now be planted.

Although frost damage was little this past winter and early spring, do select plants for your normal minimum temperatures. Review the frost and drought resistances of possible plants in the plant lists in our book ‘Your Garden in Spain’. For convenience the list is divided into groups such as annuals, perennials, ground cover plants, flowering trees, climbers etc...

There is still time to plant flowering trees for their flowers, shade and the hiding of neighbouring houses . But do choose trees appropriate to the size of your garden. Some such as Caesalpinia gilliesii, the bird of paradise tree and Cercis, the ‘Judas’ or ‘Love Tree’, stay small... However trees such as Jacaranda and Acacia can grow as tall as a house!

By the way, to help you in the garden centres, Latin, English and Spanish names are included in our plant lists.

Exotic shrubs such as Bougainvilleas, Lantana Datura and Hibiscus can be planted now but recognise they could be caught by air frosts during April. If this has happened before, plant in the sunniest and most sheltered spots in the garden. Against the south- facing house or boundary walls helps.

Before we run out of space, now is the time to sow vegetables such as carrots parsnips squashes and radishes and plant some more lettuce plantlets. In coastal areas tomatoes and peppers can be planted but it is best to wait until May inland. A full list to choose from with indicated seasonal sowing planting out and harvesting times will be found in ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’.

Benitachell Arts Centre hosted the event which boasted reflexology, reiki, palm, tarot and angel card readings as well as stands selling cakes, wooden flowers, home goods, dresses and fabrics, gifts, make-up, jewellery and eyebrow threading.

Guardian Angels President Tricia Barr said the fair was a great success and the money raised exceeded expectations but would help the charity’s “important work”.

“A huge thanks to all the wonderful helpers and stallholders, including Ann and Mike Martin of the Benitachell Arts Centre for their continued support of Guardian Angels,” she said.

“Also to Lesley Ellis for helping me organise the event and to Tammy Ablitt who donated pretty ribbon bracelets with angels, which were very popular.

Cyprus rescue: The model for all rescues going forward - savers beware THE €10BN CYPRIOT rescue marks how the Eurozone deals with failing banks, with European leaders now committed to ‘pushing back the risks’ of paying for bank bailouts from taxpayers to private investors, the chairman of the group of Eurozone finance ministers warned, as reported in Reuters and the FT. JEROEN DIJSSEBLOEM, the president of the Eurogroup, said the relative market calm in recent months, coupled with the lack of market panic following the decision to force private investors and depositors to pay for the entire bailout of two large Cypriot banks, allowed the Eurozone to go after private money more aggressively when banks fail.

It now appears that Cyprus was the testing ground for this new policy, which can now be rolled out across the EU if any country requests a bailout, or already has had a bailout agreed, Uninsured deposits in Cyprus - those accounts have over 100,000€ - face losses of €4.2 billion.

Illegal wills

I HAVE been advised by our solicitor that a Will raised in Spain will soon become illegal unless a certain codicil is added, due to the Government altering the law for foreigners (extranjeros). Is that correct as per Spanish Wills and Probate Law? IT IS not correct to say that the old Spanish Wills granted by foreigners (English, Irish, Scottish, American, etc.) in Spain will become illegal.

The situation it is that as per the European Regulation No 650/2012, the applicable law to the Succession / Inheritance will be the law of the country where the deceased had his/her habitual residence at the time of death. Also, as per its article 22 the testator /testatrix can opt expressly at the time of making the Will or at time of Death, for his/her national Law. This Regulation, shall apply to successions of person who die on or after 17th August 2015.

To give an example, if you are English and living in Spain, and you die on or after 17/08/2015, your succession will be governed by Spanish Inheritance

Law, unless you have opted for your national law. This is important, since a succession governed by Spanish Law includes forced heirs, i.e: descendents who must inherit at least 2/3 of the estate, whereas English Law does not have forced heirs and you can leave, generally, everything to whomever you want.

If you have children but in your Spanish Will you left everything to your wife, this will only be possible if English Law applies, so you need to make sure that on your Spanish Will, you opt for your national law (English Law).

Therefore, it is not that the Wills will become illegal, rather the wording of the Will would only be fulfilled if it is in line with the applicable law: Also that the Will could be contested.

In the case that your Will’s provisions are not possible under Spanish Law but only under your

national law, we advise you to sign a new one opting for your national law, if you haven’t already done so. We also advise you sign a new Will rather than a codicil. The costs are similar, but it is better, clearer, and there will be only one document to administrate, etc. Sometimes, it is not relevant which law applies to your Will and Inheritance. For example if you have neither children nor parents and you leave everything to your wife, it will be possible under both the English and Spanish legal systems, therefore you would not need to change your Will.

YOU’VE FLOWN over to Spain. Your flight was delayed on the tarmac to clear ice off the wings. You land in Alicante still clutching your overcoat and wearing your thermals to be greeted by 24º and clear blue skies. Is it any wonder that at this time of year there’s a flurry of interest in buying a property in Spain?

Estate agents’ Windows offer plenty of bargains tempting not only the holiday maker escaping winter conditions in spring but those already living here who are still renting.

With the sun shining and Spain on parade, dreaming of your own home in Spain is almost inevitable. But how do you buy here safely?

To begin the process we recommend that you use the services of a reputable and independent lawyer who is qualified and specialises in Spanish property law. You need to be able to communicate clearly with them and they need to be present before you sign or part with any money.

After that, your lawyer should guide the process. At Ábaco we’ve given our conveyancing website a bit of a spring-clean and here we outline the 12 steps your lawyer should follow to ensure the safe purchase of a property in Spain: BEFORE YOU PURCHASE Step 1 - Check that the seller of the property is the legal owner. Nowadays many bargain properties are owned by Spanish banks. Where this is the case, very thorough checks must be made into the property’s debt history including utilities and community fees.

Step 2 - Check whether there are any debts held against the property or any other problems that could affect the sale Step 3 - Make sure that the property has all the necessary licences and authorisations Step 4 - Ensure that the rights of the buyer are protected

within the contract. The buyer should never sign any document or pay a deposit without confirmation that steps 1, 2 and 3 have been taken.

DURING THE PURCHASE Step 5 - Register the buyer with the Spanish Tax Authorities obtaining the NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros) Step 6 - Arrange a mortgage or liaise with the bank to coordinate the signing of the mortgage deed Step 7 - Make the final arrangements for the purchase and ensure that everything is to the buyer’s satisfaction Step 8 - Prepare documentation for the signing of the public title deed and arrange appointments Step 9 - Accompany the buyer to the notary and verbally translate all legal documents Step 10 - Arrange for the payment of fees and taxes and for the title deed to be inscribed in the local land registry STEPS FOLLOWING THE PURCHASE Step 11 - Make sure that all utilities are transferred into the buyer’s name Step 12 - Ensure that arrangements have been made to enable the buyer to pay the obligatory annual taxes related to property ownership It sounds like a lot of steps, but it’s your lawyer who will have to take most of them and is responsible for steering you in the right direction. Although you may be in a rush to secure your slice of sunny Spain, don’t be tempted to cut corners.

Russians favour Alicante

ALICANTE AND its surrounding area looks to be the chosen destination for Russians wanting to own a second home in Spain.

The province has received the most residential and visa applications from the Russian Federation. The Russian visitor profiles were examined during a meeting between Joaquín Albaladejo, the Deputy of the Provincial Tourism Board, and the Consul General of Spain in Moscow, Miguel Bauza. Plans are in place to fast-track the processing time of visas for Russians from the current average of five days down to 2-3 days. Also, three Russian investment groups have shown interest in commercial properties in the Valencia area - representatives met with Spain’s Minister of Economy, Maximum Buch, in Moscow this week.

Age Concern need what you don’t

By Keith Nicol THE FINANCIAL crisis is hitting many other areas of our community that you may at first, not even think of. And some of those feeling the pinch are local charities. Yes, even Charities are feeling the pressure and one in particular. Age Concern said “ In 15 years on the Costa Blanca we have never encountered such hard times. We are finding it very hard to cover all our costs and to make sure our beneficiaries are receiving the excellent care they are used to. Our shops in Torrevieja and Los Montesinos need your help with donations of clothes, bric-abrac, bedding and small items of furniture. Please think of us as you do your spring-cleaning and bring any items to either of our shops or to the Day Centre in La Siesta.”

If you have any unwanted items, Age Concern would be delighted to take them off your hands for you. Age Concern opened their first Charity shop, on C/Carino, almost 15 years

ago and opened their new shop, close to Torrevieja’s bus station, on the corner of C/ Patricio Zamat and Concordia in 2005. A lot has changed over the last eight years, from the heady times of the property boom years through to today.

Their Torrevieja shop was custom designed with special display areas, making it easy to navigate and find items, with an area out back for storage, steam cleaning and ironing of clothes, plus typical office duties and bookkeeping.

Speaking of bookkeeping, Age Concern still have to pay rent for their premises, power, water, security, phones plus IVA of 21% on everything sold. They try to keep their prices as competitive as possible but until these basic costs are met, they cannot put ‘profits’ back into their valuable work. There is good reasoning behind their Torrevieja location as it is very popular with International clients, especially the Spanish, South Americans, Russians and

East Europeans while in Los Montesinos, there tends to be a slightly different selection of goods as the majority of visitors are expatriates.

Age Concern shops are always seeking volunteers who can give them just four hours of their time each week to help out. The shops are in great need of clothing, bric-a-brac, small items of furniture, records, DVD’s books and almost anything you don’t need. Once a month, at the Age Concern HQ in La Siesta, they hold an electrical goods sale on the first Wednesday while on the last Tuesday, they have a special 1€ day, with everything on sale for just an euro! Don’t worry if you can’t get to any of the shops or the drop-in centre as Age Concern can also collect; just phone 966 786 887. Every little bit helps and don’t forget, that we all get a little bit older every day, so you may be glad of the support of Age Concern yourself one day.

HI AUNTY - hoping you can help: My laptop is now some two years old running Windows 7. From day one I have had a problem with Windows office starter (English) 2010. When using Windows Word the program persistently stops responding. A window pops up informing that the program will attempt to retrieve the document, and it normally does, but it is a pain in the proverbial as this can happen numerous times whilst trying to write a letter. Robert Aunty says: Usually Word stop responding when there is a ‘3rd party add-in’ that is causing a conflict. In the ‘Word Options’ you have the option to stop, or uninstall these addins: 1. Open Word.

2. Click the Microsoft Office Button: click Word Options, and then click Add-Ins. 3. In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable or disable and note the Add-in type located in the Type column.

4. Select the Add-in type in the Manage box and then click ‘Go’.

5. Select or clear the check box for the Addin that you want enable or disable and then click ‘OK’.

Failing that you could always forget MS Office, and download and use OPENOFFICE. It is free and does everything and more that MS Office does - and is also able to use MS office file formats!

Mysterious yellow line

DEAR AUNTY: Would you be able to help me with a mystery? About two months back, there appeared on the left of my screen a bright thin yellow line from top to bottom.

It’s not impairing any functions on my laptop but it is there when I open up in the mornings, until I close at night. Many thanks, Tom Calpe Aunty says: The thin line down the screen will be a physical issue with the screen. It is nothing that can be sorted out via settings or software.

MP3 error message

MY LAPTOP runs Windows 7 and when I download albums from my media centre to my MP3s they come back with a message reading ‘format error’. I never had a problem with my last laptop running XP. Can you help? Chris, Mazarron

Aunty says: There are many formats for Media files, and it may be that the one you are using to RIP music is not an MP3, but another file format. And so in Windows Media Player Rip settings it may help if you change the rip format to MP3.

The Royal Celebrations at British Legion celebrates St Michael’s in Javea! George’s Day ON 20TH MARCH Michael celebrated the fact that he opened his first Michael’s shop in Javea exactly 30 years ago - with a huge bottle of champagne!

MICHAEL IS looking forward to his retirement so he can spend more time with his family, but can’t find anybody to take over the business: “I am still looking for that enthusiastic person willing to continue the business for another 30 years – at least!”

At the moment the three shops run themselves thanks to the fantastic staff doing such a great job - enabling Michael to work only half time.

He is a little absent minded and is fond of a tipple so it is feared he may have disappeared up his own cassock whilst trying to locate his script for the up-coming production by The Actors Studio of ‘Charitable Acts’! Anybody knowing his whereabouts is encouraged to get him to the San Miguel Casa de Cultura for the two performances at 7.30pm on Thurs and Friday 11th and 12th April. There is obviously going to be a rush for tickets and it is hoped that the vicar will bless each and everyone attending as their support will of course help the AFA Alzheimer’s of Torrevieja.

The Actors Studio’s next show ‘Charitable Acts’ is nearing the performance date and consists of two original one act comedies, once again penned by the director David Whitney. David again has been fraught with the usual struggles of getting the show together and after over 50 years with Amateur Theatre is still treading the boards himself as well as directing and writing all the material. For David, it’s a labour of love. The group was set up in 2008 by David and his wife Lorraine and has a very dedicated fan base so it is hoped this new show will attract the same amount of people as the last one ‘Funny Business’, which was very well received.

Their aim is to raise funds for the AFA Alzheimer’s Association Torrevieja so if you fancy an evening of laughter and mirth then come along to their next show. Life Showbiz Goss Kids’ Stuff: But it’s not!

IT IS with immense pleasure that I bring you a story that, when I read it, took me on a trip back in time to the early 80s when I used to do everything I could to get myself in front of the telly on midweek afternoons and crank on Thames TV, then schlapp on my laughing gear in readiness for the next exciting episode of ‘Danger Mouse’. One of the big shows on TV in the late 70s – 80s was ‘Danger Man’ starring Patrick McGoohan, and with James Bond movies as ever bringing in big audiences, having a show that featured a mouse living in the human world who doubled as a spy seemed like an obvious plot idea to put together … ‘Course it does!.

The show began in 1981 and ran through to spring 1992, and incredibly within two years had amassed 22 million regular viewers, and although it was a kid’s show, and a good

one at that, it was an awful lot more. One of the producer’s masterstrokes was to cast David Jason as the voice of Danger Mouse and the late Terry Scott as his sidekick Penfold, and with their head of operations being called Colonel K, whose nickname was ‘Special K’ due to having previously been in the Special Branch, the tongue in cheek storylines became irresistible.

The immense pleasure part I mentioned earlier is to do with news that after CITV put out a show back in January called ‘Old Skool’ that was packed with classic old kids shows, ‘Danger Mouse’ is now being lined up to make a return to the station. Having been the first UK-produced comic cartoon to break big in America, I´m sure the shows legion of fans over there, who still have big get-together’s to this day, will, like me, be beside themselves with the news that superhero ‘Danger Mouse’ will soon be back in town and that we can all now sleep safely in our beds.

TODAY’S ALL-MALE cast now brings us to both The Voice and the X Factory, but just in case you think I´m going down the usual route, stay tuned, as what I have for you today is the stuff of an out –and-out war on Twitter.

I will never change my views about both of these awful programmes by the way, but it really is great sport when the famous faces from these shows start playing a game of handbags at ten paces. An article in last week’s Daily Mirror told us that ‘The Voice’ coach Danny Donoghue said, when asked about X Factory winner James Arthur, “never heard of him…” Sadly this childish remark was then repeated by Will.I.am, another of ´The Voice coaches, but he might’ve got away with it as he changed it to “Who’s James Arthur?”

It’s all very sad, pathetic stuff in truth, but the day was gloriously won by James Arthur when he Tweeted back “I’m the one that kept you off the top spot in the charts.” … Touché mais oui! … (Del Boy … circa 1981)

Coogan is cookin’

THE THEME of new TV shows continues and this time features a comic actor with a pedigree that includes Alan Partridge from the hugely funny ‘Knowing me Knowing You’, then the same character turning up as an innately rambling DJ on a small radio station in Norwich. The new TV show I´m referring to is that the word coming out of Hollywood is that Steve Coogan, the creator and performer of Alan Partridge, has been offered to play the lead role in ‘Doubt’, the next big project from David Shore, the man behind Hugh Laurie’s hugely successful ‘House’.

Coogan was reportedly chosen for the role in the pilot episode following quite a lengthy casting search, and will play a policeman-turned-lawyer called Vincent, who divides his time between working the system for clients and trying to reconcile with his ex-wife. The man from Manchester said, “The character I will be playing is ‘handsome, quick-witted and extremely smart…” Sounds like a dab of Alan Partridge has crept in already!

Steve Coogan has quite rightly received many plaudits over the years for his work as both a writer and actor, and to now see it all clicking into gear for the boy is great news indeed …

by Joanna Baldwin’s new choir ‘Music Unlimited’ on Saturday 30th March.

The group is singing its mix of madrigals and motets, anthems and spirituals, traditional and modern, at the Teatro del Sol in La Nucia.

Music Unlimited’s debut concerts were greeted with positive comments such as “a wonderful blend of voices”

and “sent a tingle down my spine”.

And concert proceeds enabled the choir to make donations to the village churches of Alcalali and Rafol d’Almunia, animal charity SCAN, and Jalon Valley HELP. Joanna – pictured handing a cheque to SCAN’s Mervyn Spencer - admitted she was “thrilled, proud and excited” to be leading such a talented group of singers.

The Easter Saturday concert will feature a slightly adapted programme

but again include work by composers such as Morley, Tallis, Gibbons, Mozart, Vivaldi, Stanford, Bruckner, Holst and Gershwin, and include solo and duet work by Joanna and guest singer Jan Dewland.

La Nucia Craft Market worth a visit THERE WILL be no craft market weekly craft market in front of La Nucia Town Hall on the Easter weekend but the weekly markets will continue on Sunday 7th of April and then every Sunday morning till the Medieval Market at the beginning of July. Opening times are from 11am to 2pm and at 11, 12 and 1 o’clock there are guided tours (the guide speaks English) of La Nucia old town.

The market itself consists of just ten or twelve stalls with well-made pieces by people who try to make a living from their craft.

More than 40 artesans take turns, some coming every three weeks or once a month, others only every so now and then. This way, the fair offers every week something different. WHAT ARE CATARACTS AND WHY DO THEY OCCUR? CATARACTS ARISE when there is a loss of transparency of the eye’s natural lens, whose function, together with the cornea, is to sharp focus light on the retina. This progressive lens opacification hinders the passage of light and causes deterioration of vision.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS SUFFERED BY A PATIENT WITH CATARACTS? At first, when the cataract is not very dense, it causes a clouding of the vision. Also, lights can cause more glare than usual. Chicken Tagine A NORTH African theme this week, combining succulent chicken with subtle spices and dried fruits. Ideally it should be served with cous cous, but plain boiled rice would be almost as good.

4 skinless chicken thighs, boned and cut into bite sized chunks 1 medium onion, roughly chopped 8 dried apricots, quartered A handful of seedless raisins 1 large tomato cut into wedges ½ tsp cumin seeds, crushed 1 tsp mild paprika ½ tsp turmeric 150ml chicken stock Olive oil

FOR THE COUS COUS • 125g cous cous • 125ml chicken stock • About 1 tbls each of finely diced onion, red pepper and green pepper • 1 tbls chopped parsley • A knob of butter 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. 2. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken and onion together over medium heat for 5-6 minutes. Stir in the cumin, paprika and turmeric then add the apricots and raisins together with the chicken stock. Transfer to an ovenproof casserole, cover and place in the oven for 30 minutes.

3. Remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the tomato pieces. Return the casserole to the oven, uncovered, and cook for a further 15 minutes.

4. As the casserole is cooking, prepare the cous cous. Gently fry the diced onion and pepper until soft then set aside. In a large saucepan, bring the stock to a rapid boil then add the cous cous, butter, diced vegetables and parsley. Remove from the heat, cover with a lid and leave to stand for about 2 minutes then gently reheat, stirring constantly until steaming.

Serve immediately with the tagine.

Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes

The ‘Churches Together’ event meets on the beach between Javea Port and the Parador Hotel, near La Siesta Restaurant, for the unique service as dawn breaks over the sea.

RTN was told the first recorded Easter sunrise Service took place in 1732 in a Moravian congregation in Saxony. Originally all night vigils were held in churches and people would go outside as the sun rose to greet Easter morning.

And across the world Christians meet at churches, lakesides, mountain tops and on beaches to hold a sunrise service.

Javea International Baptist Church will be serving a continental breakfast at the Church Centre, Carrer Favara 8, Javea Pueblo, after the Sunrise Service. Anyone wishing to enjoy the meal should call Marianne on 965 065 604 or 678 369 503 to book.

NOW WE’VE started on the theme of subjunctives, we’re going to go through to the end.

NOTICE I missed out the word “bitter” because subjunctives are “sweet”, once you get to know them. Although there is some truth in the statement that as non-native Spanish speakers we can get away without using them and be perfectly well understood, it is also true that they are an integral part of structure of language and are also closely linked to forms of courtesy, which is something that does tend to concern us when we are communicating.

Anyway, this article is devoted exclusively to mechanics, that is, to the conjugation of the present subjunctive, before we turn back again to where and how it is used. As I have mentioned before, we base the conjugation of the present subjunctive on the first person singular of the present tense. With most standard verbs this is a simple procedure. Here are examples of –ar, –er and –ir verbs.

Hablar (first person singular “hablo” – final letter change – “hable”) hable hablemos hables habléis hable hablen Beber (first person singular “bebo” – final letter change – “beba”) beba bebamos bebas bebáis beba beban Vivir (first person singular “vivo” – final letter change – “viva”) viva vivamos vivas viváis viva vivan

You may be wondering why I have specifically mentioned the “first person singular” as the basis of these conjugations. This is because it is important when dealing with odd forms, such as “tengo”, “digo”, “oigo”, “salgo”, “veo”, “vengo”, “conduzco”, “conozco” and so on. So, for example the present subjunctive of “tener” goes: tenga, tengas, tenga, tengamos, tengáis, tengan. What about oír – first personal singular oigo, present subjunctive oiga, oigas, oiga, oigamos, oigáis, oigan. Let’s do one more – “ver” based on “veo” – vea, veas, vea, veamos, veáis, vean.

There are six irregulars, already mentioned: (ir – vaya; ser – sea; dar – dé; haber – haya; estar – esté; saber – sepa) and finally there are just a couple of things to know about root-changing verbs that don’t fall into the category above of having odd first person singulars. This is what happens to them. Those that split sounds (o – ue and e – ie) return to the single sound in the first and second persons plural.

My overall thought is that I wish Mr Crowley had been my history teacher at school back in the dinosaur days – I might have listened more.

Make sure that your message is taken seriously and then acted upon because in the dreamy energy of Pisces things can fall by the wayside; and there can be no more run arounds, especially seeing as completion and verification is now just around the corner.

Pluto is on board and there when Mercury takes a stab at helping in the lack of communication that currently shelves what sounds like a good deal. SO MANY of us have psychic energies within us, and they can be so much a part of us that we do not realise when we are using them. Hunches, feelings, gut reactions are all part of a psychic process that many have locked within. Maybe there are many who haven’t analysed this distinct form of awareness, and the highly indicative energy that does whatever it can to bring things to our attention.

If something doesn’t feel right we can have strong feelings in our stomachs, or other places, which tell us to be careful or to be aware. To ignore these reactions wouldn’t be right, but they are part of the autonomic psychic energy we all have on board. This pre warning has saved lives and helped people get the help they need, and it is something worth always bearing in mind.

I do not use any skills that are unique. The entire psychic process is within us and it is up to all of us, as individuals to acknowledge and accept and tune into those energies, if indeed we want to. Some people, even today, are very scared of their gut reactions and feelings. These talented people are scared that this could be the “curse” of something spooky or weird. Often they will also feel that the warning that they receive may actually serve to bring on bad energies, and so too many fear that this pre warning is something they do not like to see, hear or feel. I have met very talented people who would have developed into superb Clairvoyants and Mediums; but who have feared their abilities greatly, and not trusted themselves to give the right messages, though they know that they have received them.

If it’s your birthday this week

call back to the surgery and vaguely walked around El Corte Ingles all afternoon preoccupied for the success of the procedure. At 17.10 I heard a clear message whispered to me to return to the surgery, and I knew that my dog had passed on. As the vet opened the door he was amazed when I told him that I knew, and the time of death was logged at 17.10. Who whispered in my ear I do not know, but it prepared me for what was the very worst outcome that day.

Many people have this onboard psychic power that alerts them in times of need. My Mother knew her Father was dead when she woke up one day. There was no other warning whatsoever and as she put on her best dress and combed her hair, her Mother came into her room to tell her the news she already knew. As a ten year old she showed a highly psychic energy which sadly never developed, but as an actress she did get good parts, and she always knew, instinctively, what I was up to, as well.

Good or bad news travels fast. Messages sent, sensations felt and actions taken are so much about us in our everyday lives. I personally like it when people talk of their gifts, and love to hear tales of what good use they have been put to.

However the silent, and the scared do not speak of their psychic connections in any way. This is an enlightened era whereby Spiritualism is becoming more and more popular and more attractive to many. Use your senses and you will be using the gift sent to you for good reason. There is nothing bad about innermost feelings and sensitivity which are the noble part of the process of divination. If something bugs you it is for a reason and rather than hide away emotions and reactions, or worry that you are wrong in any way; share them for the good of those who may need the benefit of your heightened skills in the greater spiritual scheme of things!

No matter what you have done Cheryl you cannot continue to torture yourself in this way. You write with remorse and are not begging for forgiveness, but you have to start a dialogue with Spirit. None of us are perfect, all of us have done wrong things and however bad the acts we did you have to realise that so too is there forgiveness. You are entitled to share your misdemeanour with Spirit, and they will only judge you on how you feel about the wrong that you did. They are only concerned of your own conscious and the way you feel about the truth of what happened. That is all that matters. It is those who have no feelings or that do not care about the things that they did that may be waiting to move on for some time when the time comes. You made a mistake, and I am concerned that you now minimalise your stress and trauma. One day you will enter into the Spirit World when the time comes with an open heart and receive the forgiveness you deserve to have.

Don’t let history repeat itself when there are signs of change and betterment all around. Yes you can take the rough with the smooth, but why have cotton if you could have silk?

400 kilometres across Cuba for charity!

PAMELA MCCARTHY, a popular and active Member of Mieke Meulman’s thriving Tennis Group at Sol Park in Moraira, is to cycle 400 kilometres across Cuba from 11th to 16th October, undertaking this arduous and ambitious project in aid of a number of worthwhile charities under the auspices of ‘Action for Charity’.

This particular fund-raising challenge is for ‘Women V Cancer’, supporting: ‘Breast Cancer Care’, ‘Ovarian Cancer Action’ and ‘Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust’. Pamela has already raised £2,775 of her £2,900 target and she and her husband Robert are currently preparing for the Paris Marathon on 7th April!

By Jack Troughton THE ICONIC and romantic Scottish image of Eilean Donan Castle triggered some hectic bidding when a watercolour was sold at a Javea Caledonian Society celebration.

The painting by talented artist and society member John Button sold for 275€ on Burns Night and made up part of the recent 900€

donation made to Cancer Care Javea.

The historic castle stands on an island in Loch Duich in the Western Highlands – where three huge sea lochs meet - and was built in the 13th Century but destroyed by the Royal Navy following the Jacobite Rebellion. Nearly 200 years later, it was restored in the 20th Century to become a major tourist attraction.

WHEN STUDYING the facts about those who own and drive motor vehicles, one point stands out and that is so many think nothing of ignoring the laws.

ONE EU law is that even though a vehicle is in another EU country it must still be legal as if it was in the original country - for UK vehicles they must have a current MOT and the VED must be current and paid with the original receipt in the windscreen. I often see offers in the local English Press for VED receipts and ‘genuine’ MOT certificates which must be fraudulent as the MOT must be physically done in the UK, as we all know, and the original carried and displayed in the vehicle.

For those who have not bothered to transfer registration there are, as I have previously reported, more problems now where older,

polluting vehicles (most) are being refused importation unless they are genuine ‘historic vehicles’, that is 25 years plus old, with the re-registering here being for this classification which can cost as much as 1,000€.

And expect usage limitations on such old vehicles soon, as in Germany.

The latest now is the use of fraudulent disability badges and nearly 70,000 have been cancelled in the UK, which means most likely that some (a lot) are being used here, and the holders gave to apply for such badges again.

The new badges have a hologram which is impossible to copy we are told. The computer

systems that allow all authorities in the EU to check at the roadside the legality of all vehicles including foreign EU ones means that the police and courts will be able to get ‘safely’ tough. As in the UK, a vehicle on the road which is not currently legally, been taxed or a SORN applied for (which means that it must still be in the UK and not used on the roads anywhere) in the time periods allowed, will be seized and crushed.

I guess many of us justify such actions although they financially penalise those of us who follow the rules.

We make it harder than we need to NOEL’S WORLD OF GOLF

RTN GOLF Club arranged for TaylorMade Golf to take the first of the year’s fitting tour events to Alicante Golf last Thursday so that our members and the general public could test all the latest golf clubs from one of the leading manufacturers.

THE RESPONSE we had was incredible and we will repeat the event at Alicante Golf on 30th April so that more golfers can see the best way to make golf as easy as it can be.

There is absolutely no way to make golf simple but we certainly do not make it easy for ourselves when we have golf clubs that are too old and/or unsuitable for us.

On Thursday I saw a 70-year-old man with a swing speed of 65mph using stiff steel shafts in his irons and stiff graphite shafts in his woods. This was a combination completely unsuitable for someone with this swing speed. The client had fallen out of love with golf because he could no longer score to his handicap and had sought the advice of several professionals in the area; sadly none of whom had checked the suitability of his golf clubs. His maximum distance with his 5 wood was just over one hundred yards. After fitting the correct shafts and clubhead to suit him his swing speed increased by sixteen miles per hour and he was comfortably hitting his seven iron where he

was hitting his five wood.

This client was not alone but was the biggest example of what many of us do wrong by going into a golf shop and buying on impulse a set of clubs that we like the look of without a thought of whether they will suit us. Another client was using her husband’s old Ping clubs that were custom fitted for him. He is six feet two inches; she is five feet three inches and considerably smaller in build. Until she was properly fitted with clubs to suit her what chance had she of really enjoying golf?

Any sport is more fun if you play it well and golf is certainly no exception but we can do things in golf that will make things as easy as they can be by using the knowledge of people who care about those whom they are serving and not just selling purely for profit.

Technology is readily available nowadays to be able to get a custom fitted set of golf clubs easily that actually cost no more than an off-the-shelf set so why not make use of the situation and get the correct clubs for you?

RTN GOLF Club members turned out at Alicante Golf again last Tuesday to test their skills on the golf course designed by Seve Ballesteros and the golf course was again the winner as only one player played to his handicap.

Peter Hasell scored 36 Stableford points to take home his first Ashworth golf shirt of the year presented each week to our winners. Peter was also the only winner of our twos completion in the last three weeks and promised to enter his winnings on his tax returns at the end of the year.

We will assemble at Alicante Golf again next Tuesday with the ambition of beating the golf course again and will welcome all golfers who wish to joins us for the challenge of returning the best score of the day.

In the closing stages of last week’s Malaysian Grand Prix, world champion Sebastian Vettel defied team orders and took the chequered flag when he was supposed to allow stable mate Mark Webber the win. Now I don’t watch a great deal of Formula 1, but as a person who takes a general interest in most sports, the whole saga doesn’t sit well with me at all and, for what it’s worth, I’m Team Vettel in this case.

The fact that the German has been accused of poor sportsmanship is ridiculous to me. Vettel is the youngest ever driver to win three world titles in a row and you don’t get to that level in any sport without having a ruthless streak. Over-taking Webber when the opportunity presented itself was, in my opinion, his professional natural instinct and, if anything, I’d be more surprised if he’d followed his team’s orders rather than ignore them.

Not only that but had Vettel stepped aside for Webber as instructed, how does that not constitute race-fixing? Surely such shenanigans only reduce an internationally celebrated sport to a billionaire’s play-thing!?

And would it even be legal? Fixing the race for the supposed benefit of the team is one thing but what if one of these Asian betting syndicates we hear so much about was found to have placed millions on a Webber victory and Team Red Bull facilitated that?

There would be questions to answer I’m sure! It’s too much of a grey area for me so

I’d prefer to see drivers fight to win the race rather than play puppet to the whim of their team bosses.

The Europa League quarter-finals get underway on Thursday and it’s looking quite good from an English point of view. Yes it’s been a poor year in terms of the Champions League but Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle are still flying the flag in Europe’s secondary competition. There are of course some football fans who only like to see their team succeed but, as an Englishman, I’ll be rooting for one of the aforementioned clubs to lift the trophy.

Although Chelsea and Spurs play at home in the first legs, I still fancy them both to progress over Rubin Kazan and FC Basel respectively. Newcastle however have a real test on their hands and need to overcome former European heavyweight Benfica if they’re to book a place in the semi-finals.

Alan Pardew’s side have been a real box of chocolates this season, you just don’t know what you’re going to get. They were always going to struggle to replicate the heroics of the last campaign but, domestically, I’m sure Toon fans would have expected better. They may have flirted with relegation at times, but I really don’t see them going down because not only do I think they’ve got some good players, there are definitely three worse teams in the division.

Campus of Champions begins registration

By Keith Nicol JULY MAY seem like a long way away, but twelve weeks will soon fly by and it will be time for the fifth Campus of Champions for local youth footballers. The Olímpico Escuela de Tecnificación who developed last summer’s football campuses ‘Iker Casillas’, is again behind this year’s event, in collaboration with the Department of Sports. There are two sessions, from 1 to 7 July and the second one from 8 to 14 July. Players are welcome to attend both. The Campus of Champions activities will be focused on the improvement and enhancement of the qualities of the players, no matter what their level.

The price per session is 220€ for those that go home for lunch and meals (from 10:15 to 12:30pm and 5:30pm to 7:00pm) and 320€ for the complete program, which includes food and other activities (10:15am to 7:00pm).

THIS WEEK was the 5th round of the Coast Rider Challenge Trophy and was held on the Eden Canal stretch of the Rio Segura. As Terry has said in his report, the river was up and running; well it had risen even higher and was flowing even more strongly when we arrived. (Terry´s match was the day before). However, on the day everybody caught fish (A first for this year I think) with one specimen being landed and one lost at the net.

Tony Price caught and landed a carp of 4.60 kilos (in old money 10.12lbs).

Stan Roberts hooked and managed to get it to his net to find the net was not big enough - his estimate of the fish was around 20lb (not a fisherman’s tale I hasten to add). Looks now the only time to fish the river is when it is in flood!

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied

by Terry Screen This week we were again fishing the Eden Canal for the eleventh and final round in the Abbey Angling Cup on the 19th March; perhaps now that the weather seems to be improving we will soon be able to fish the other venues.

I paid a visit to the Murcia town water last Sunday, and the water was just receding off the footpath which has left about four inches of silt on there. The flood water has now reached the Eden Canal with the excess water overflowing in to the old river bed, the water on the match length is controlled by sluice gates which regulate the flow, but the water was still rising throughout the match and was running quite fast. Although conditions are not good by any means most anglers caught fish.

This being the last match of the series the points was close right up to the end as only eight of the eleven matches points count which means dropping the three lowest points.

Anglers Together THE OBJECTIVE of Anglers Together was to introduce anglers to each other, who otherwise had no one to fish with or didn’t know where to fish.
