People PAWS for animals THE ANIMALS cared for by Almeria charity owe a massive ‘thank you’ to big-hearted supporters who donated over 200kg of food. by Jack Troughton PAWS staged a gathering in Mojacar to offer advice on pet issues and was rewarded with 140kg of dog and puppy food and 62kg of cat and kitten food. The event was staged at the Re/Max Paraiso Estate Agents in Mojacar’s Parque Commercial after the company’s Marisela Reche offered the use of the premises. And a local vet was on hand to offer advice on pet care; especially in the summer months when temperatures soar. PAWS was able to sell merchandise to raise funds, recruit new members, and hand out issues of its new monthly newsletter. The bulletin is already available at all PAWS charity shops, veterinary surgeries in the area, garden centres, town halls, and a number of other suitable outlets. MP Arrested in Vega Baja Suspended Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk spent three nights in a Costa Blanca police cell after a violent row with his estranged wife at a house in Algorfa, in the Vega Baja. by Rhiannan Bell The 49-year-old Labour member, was led away in handcuffs by police on Saturday evening, while his wife Karen was taken to hospital. After appearing before the Violence Against Women Court in Orihuela on Tuesday, Danczuk was released when his former partner declined to press charges. Witnesses told The Sun, who initially broke the story, there had been an ‘almighty row’ punctuated by ‘banging and screaming’, before police arrived at the Algorfa apartment and led Danczuk away. Danczuk told the judge the argument was a personal matter and, though he admitted shouting, he denied there had been any physical abuse. His wife, a 33-year-old former councillor reportedly suffered cuts and bruises and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The controversial politician, who was a leading campaigner in the fight to expose historic child sex abuse allegations in Rochdale, is currently suspended from the Labour Party. He´s been accused of sending lewd text messages to a teenage girl looking for work experience.

ONE IN THREE vessels sailing off the coast this summer will be breaking strict maritime rules, according to the Guardia Civil maritime service SEMAR. More than 1,000 surprise inspections have been carried out and a third of boats were breaking the law – the safety campaign caught out pleasure craft, sports boats, fishing vessels and jet skis. The clampdown discovered boats without a valid technical inspection – similar to an MOT; lacking insurance; with excess people on board; and owners without the correct qualifications at the helm, in Spain a licence is needed to own vessels or even a jet ski. Figures released by SEMAR show that since the beginning of the year the maritime police has staged 1,143 inspections of vessels on the Mediterranean – 557 off the coast of Valencia, 374 off Castellon and 212 off Alicante. Alicante topped the list of offenders; officers issued penalties to 142 boat owners in the province, 106 in Valencia and 69 in Castellon. And since the beginning of July and the start of the high season on the coast there have been 156 inspections to recreational craft on the water in a bid to boost safety at sea. Penalties can be severe. A spokesman for SEMAR said as an example for exceeding the number of people allowed on board, a fine of 1,000€ could be imposed for each person above the specified limit. The Guardia Civil maritime service of Valencia currently has a strength of 140 officers. There are 51 stationed in Valencia, 51 in Alicante and 38 in Castellon. As well as policing Spanish territorial waters they are also involved in humanitarian work, rescuing migrants attempting to reach the mainland in frail craft. Town halls along the coast were dismayed at the figures and the lack of respect for regulations that were intended to keep people safe on the water – especially as the sea is such an attraction for visitors and residents. Politicians hope that publicity will be given to the issue to make boat owners aware of the problem, their need to comply with regulations, and the potential hazard of setting sail without the correct qualifications. Calpe Councillor Carole Saunders said: “Having a boat is like owning a car - the driver should be fully qualified and the vehicle should be fully roadworthy.” She added: “We believe there are so many boats in marinas along the coast that remain tied up and never move because the owners have not got a licence – they have been bought by people who have not spared a thought for the rules of the sea or the responsibility of owning a boat. “You simply cannot just take a boat out to without knowing what you are doing because it can be extremely dangerous – if you get into trouble the emergency services are forced to go out and it costs the tax payer an absolute fortune.”

New ‘mirador’ in view MOJACAR COUNCIL has given a green light to the 1.6 million Euro demolition of Plaza Nueva Mirador and its replacement with a modern building. by Jack Troughton An extraordinary meeting of the local authority also agreed the tender process for the work; a project prepared by the provincial government, the Diputacion de Almeria. The current building at Plaza Nueva will centralise the town hall – the mirador viewing point is on the roof - and was built in the seventies. However, since 2011 engineers have monitored its deterioration after cracks appeared in the structure. The meeting was held in a bid to get building started in October and finished in late March next year, ahead of the 2017 tourist season. And a spokesman for the council said: “The drafting team has planned the timing of the work to perfection and Plaza Nueva will be ready and avail-

able for Easter.” Access to the town centre is guaranteed at all times in coordination with local police with new temporary routes and diversions planned. The first phase of the work is the demolition of the existing building and the construction of new foundations. Mayor Rosemari Cano has already scheduled meetings with experts, residents and businesses to answer questions and clarify any doubts. The new building and its mirador will be fully accessible to anyone with disabilities by new stairs, ramps and a lift up from Avenida de Paris. The spokesman added: “The new town hall premises, located under Plaza Nueva, will end the current municipal services being scattered all around Mojacar. The new building will be more practical and convenient for the staff, as well as for those who need to visit to make arrangements or inquiries.”

Mojacar’s Legion diary MEMBERS OF the Mojacar Branch of the Royal British Legion meet on the first and third Thursday of the month in the town. The branch is based at the Centro de Usos Multiples, the artisan centre, at meetings start at 11.15am – everyone is welcome to attend and people do not have to have served with the Armed Forces to join. Counterfeit gang arrested by Caroline Tyszka GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested members of a criminal gang using counterfeit notes to make purchases across Spain. The police operation was carried out in Valencia, Murcia and Ciudad Real – where 200€ notes were being fraudulently produced and used on unsuspecting shop workers. Five members of the gang were arrested and charged with belonging to a criminal organization, counterfeiting, fraud and threatening behaviour. Officers estimate that the group used the illegal tender at least fifty times before being caught and that they were able to hire cars and spend the night in four star hotels. The gang would use large banknotes to pay for a low cost product,. Following the verification of a genuine note on a machine, the criminals used racist and threatening comments to shop workers And once the cashier was suitably distressed and distracted, the gang continued with the transaction…having replaced the note with a forgery. The five arrested, two men and three women aged between 18 and 33 years were all of Spanish nationality.

APASA’s sponsored walk

ANIMAL CHARITY APASA is staging its fourth annual sponsored Dog Walk on Sunday 18th September. The walk starts from Bar Mr Punch in Javea Park at 11am – registration costs 3€ at is open from 10am. Incognito at the chateau THE INGOGNITO Singers aim to bring a little ‘Ooh la la” to a special fund raising event in Mojacar on Saturday 3rd December to support animal charity PAWS. by Jack Troughton ‘An Afternoon with the Incognito Singers’ has a very French flavour – venue Casa Le Mena, on the mountain near The Puerto Marina Hotel, has even be renamed ‘Chateau Polansky’ for the occasion. There will be a variety of songs performed by the choir and in the second half a medley of songs from hit musical Les Miserables will be performed.

Tickets for the afternoon are 12€, which include a welcome drink and canapés, are now on sale. There will also be a cash bar, a dessert table, and a French-themed raffle. Fraudsters Caught Officers from the National Police have arrested six people in an investigation centred around a fictitious company which is alleged to have swindled 123,208€ from the Social Security. The gang of registered a hospitality company supposedly operating from a business address in El Ejido in March 2014 and over the months managed to obtain benefits for unemployment, sick leave and maternity leave for several ‘employees’. Investigators found the fraudsters took extreme care to set up the ‘business’ with the sole purpose of extracting financial benefits in the long term from the Social Security department and were prepared to wait the required length of time, sometimes several months, before claiming a particular benefit for a fictitious employee. The six members have been charged with alleged crimes of forgery and fraud against the Treasury and Social Security.

Driving Licence Points by Rhiannan Bell More than 4,000 drivers in Almeria have had to take a special course to recover lost points on their driving licences – imposed along with fines for offences on the road. The divide between men and women on these new statistics was staggering; 3,332 men lost their licences compared to a mere 207 of women drivers. The system of deducting points from the driving licence was introduced 10 years ago but despite 3,500 drivers in Almeria losing all of their designated points and having to attend a course to reinstate them, 1,897 of those continued to abuse the highway laws and lost all the points a second time! The test to recoup points consists of a theory exam and across the province of Almeria, 334 courses have been attended by 4,286 drivers hoping to regain points on their licence. The most notable offences for losing points were for excessive speed, not wearing a seat belt and for using a mobile phone whilst at the wheel. Over the last few years there has been a fall in drink driving offences which were once at the top of the list. Of the 384,524 drivers in the province, 72% have not lost any points and have not been fined, which implies an increased awareness in general behind the wheel.

Rescued at sea by Jack Troughton

THE CIVIL Guard has rescued 50 migrants in the waters off Almeria as they tried to cross to Spain from North Africa. The crew of the maritime service ‘Rio Mino’ which was deployed as part of Operation Indalo, part of the European humanitarian response ‘Frontex’ to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. The vessel intercepted two frail boats drifting off the coast, carrying 40 men and 10 women in total, all adults. The first rescue involved an inflatable boat drifting 23 nautical miles off the island of Alboran. There were six men on board, all thought to be Moroccans. And the second boat was intercepted close by. The second inflatable had 44 people on board including 10 women A spokesman for the Civil Guard said the migrants were in danger as sea conditions were worsening and officers used high-powered dinghies to ferry them to the ship. All were said to be in good health, apart from a woman who needed treatment for burns on her leg and was treated by the ship’s health team.

International car Sky TV thieves arrested for Spain GUARDIA CIVIL officers have dismantled a criminal gang dedicated to dealing with stolen vehicles and ‘ringing’ the cars with a fake identity. by Caroline Tyszka The Alicante Guardia arrested six people, all of Lithuanian nationality, who were operating between their home country and Spain – stealing vehicles and selling them on in Eastern Europe. The investigation, which was run in collaboration with Europol, took several months before the officers were able to swoop on the gang - where they discovered stolen and false documentation together with licence plate machinery. The gang stole paperwork from existing vehicles - the owner believing that they had lost the documents. They would steal a car of the same make, erase the chassis number and change the registration plates before the vehicle was taken to Lithuania for sale. Whilst the criminal gang operated in many areas apart from Alicante, such as Madrid and Murcia, they established a base between Guardamar del Segura and Pilar de la Horadada. The estimated value of the stolen vehicles has been put at 430,000 euros. During the raid the officers managed to

recover 14 cars. Of the six arrested – aged between 28 and 64 years old – five were immediately jailed as the operation continues into the possibility of others being involved.

THE TELEVISION giant Sky is planning a major expansion into the European market by launching its Now TV service in Spain, according to industry insiders. The online streaming service is set to challenge the company’s major competitors, particularly Netflix and Amazon. The Now TV is anticipated to be offered to Spanish households for a monthly fee of €10, although as with their competitors the service will rely on having a good internet provider. Spain is seen as attractive to subscription streaming providers partly because a relatively low proportion of households subscribe to traditional pay-TV. According to official figures, only 27 percent of Spanish homes have the service, compared with nearly two thirds of British households.

Holiday Road Deaths

Spain´s holiday weekend saw a total of 18 road accidents in the Murcia region resulting in two deaths and 28 people injured, three of whom were serious hurt and required hospitalisation. by Rhiannan Bell The first fatal accident occurred on Friday at 17:30, when a car skidded off the road at kilometre 1 of the A-91. The driver, aged 70, managed to get back onto the carriageway, however, he never fully gained control of his vehicle and crashed into a barrier, the impact of which killed him. The second fatal accident occurred on Saturday at 14:15 when a car veered off the RM-D14 killing the driver aged 64. Throughout the long weekend break, the Guardia Civil and Local Police conducted 4,631 breath tests, of which 142 read positive; a 2.84 percentage of the total. The A-30 and A-7 recorded some minor traffic jams but generally traffic was free flowing.

Drugs for Sale

The Guardia Civil surprised two people who were both selling drugs in different car parks of two nightclubs in Los Narejos, near Los Alcázares, during the early hours of

Monday morning. The arrests were carried out by officers working under campaign ‘Operation Summer 2016’, and they seized several individual packets of cocaine, ecstasy, speed, along with a substantial amount of cash. The two arrested are reported as being Spanish, 29 and Lithuanian, 22, living in Torrevieja and San Javier, respectively.

Have a cigar! CUBA’S REVOLUTIONARY leader Fidel Castro received a very special birthday present for his 90th birthday, a gigantic Havana cigar. by Jack Troughton Tobacconist Jose Castelar Cairo – better known as Cueto to his friends – rolled the 90m cigar to celebrate the birth of the communist former president who took power in 1959 and ruled for almost half a century. The cigar was part of Castro’s iconic – he was frequently pictured in military fatigues with one clamped between his teeth. Cueto hopes to break his own world record for rolling the world’s longest cigar for the sixth time. His team worked 12 hours a day over 12 days to create the monster, which is the width of a conventional cigar. The team worked on long tables in an old colonial fort overlooking Havana Harbour and the cigar’s length was verified by a British Embassy official who sent information to Guinness World Records requesting the title be recorded. In 2011, the tobacconist last entered the record book after creating a cigar that was 81.80m in length. Cueto said: “It is 90m long to commemorate 90 years of our comandante...He hasn’t smoked for years, but the gift we are offering him is the hard work we have done to commemorate his birthday.”

Controlling cat colonies by Jack Troughton CRUZ AZUL Murcia is busy helping keep the feral cat population of the region under control with a ‘trap-neuter-return’ programme. The charity, which also helps pet owners on limited incomes, successfully used its skills to aid residents of Sucina Golf Urbanisation near San Javier. Feral cats can be prolific breeders. A single female can produce an average of 12 kittens a year if not spayed – and a kitten can reach puberty at the age of between five or nine months and start having little ones of her own. The trap-neuter-return campaign involves cats being humanely trapped in their colony, taken to a local vet to be sterilised, ear-clipped, and vaccinated under anaesthetic, and returned to the site where they were caught. Last Christmas four young abandoned cats arrived at Sucina Golf. Residents began feeding them in the hope they would be

able to handle the felines and take them to a vet to be neutered but quite quickly seven kittens were born and people feared they would soon be overrun. Resident Denise Standen, a volunteer at the Cruz Azul Centre in San Javier, sought advice from Vice President Sue Thomason – and soon the charity was at work helping control the growing cat colony “without cruelty”. A spokesman said: “Cruz Azul Murcia is always happy to help local communities control their cat colonies. Cooperation between neighbours is the key to a successful campaign, raising funds for the operations, coordinating the trap-neuter-return campaign, following the guidelines Cruz Azul suggests. “Traps are available free of charge at the Cruz Azul Centre in San Javier and volunteers are happy to take everyone through the correct procedure.” To find out more call Sue Thomason on 693 017 616 or visit www.cruzazulmurcia.es.

Overcome by Fumes A Local Police officer was overcome by fumes while trying to help extinguish a house fire in Cieza on Sunday evening on the first floor of the property in calle Cortesía; the cause of which is as yet unknown. An ambulance was called but the officer´s colleagues transported him to hospital to receive urgent treatment before the emergency vehicle arrived at the scene. Fire crews managed extinguisah the flames just before 01:00 on Monday and no other injuries were sustained by occupants or rescue workers.

Perfect parking

by Jack Troughton Parking with the big boys at a Costa Blanca resort, one youngster scored a perfect 10 for placing his vehicle between the white lines. With driversâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tempers running short near the seafront in Javea at the height of the holiday season, it was an amusing example of how to get it right according to the rules of the road. However, the triumph was short-lived. A grumpy 4x4 owner soon moved the go-kart onto the pavement...to the annoyance of speeding cyclists, skateboarders, roller-skaters and (possibly) mums and dads with pushchairs, not to mention ordinary pedestrians.

THE NEW look charity singing group TAABS is ready to perform again and lend a helping hand as good causes look to raise funds. The Torrevieja Amateur Association of Balladier Singers has restructured and welcomed new faces. Now the group will take bookings to help charities. In the past, TAABS has helped raise thousands of Euros for charities and made return visits to give a helping hand year after year. The good causes it has supported include: Help at Home; Butterfly Children; Easy Horse Care; Maria and the Pink Ladies; Pets in Spain; Alzheimer’s; Reach Out; Elche Children’s Home; and the Samaritans. The group has also been “honoured” of singing at Orihuela Cathedral, The Boulevard La Zenia; the Royal British Legion Orihuela Costa; and La Siesta Church fund raising events. TAABS would be happy to hear from any charity and sing at an event. Currently the group has a 60’s programme but any theme is possible. All our yesterdays by Jack Troughton THE AUGUST holiday Antiques Fair at Teulada on Monday attracted dealers from along the coast and welcomed hundreds of members of the public. The fair at Salon Canor was busier than in previous years and provided an opportunity for people to get away from the sea and sand. Organiser Sue Horey told RTN: “This August fair is better than normal and once again there is a fabulous atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.” She said dealers from as far away as Murcia and Gandia travelled to the event and 78 tables in the hall were occupied by 55 vendors. Sue, who has been organising antiques fairs at the venue for 12 years, added: “the next event is in October, it is an extra day – we are becoming so popular we are now staging five fairs a year.” Salvador Martinez, who runs the ‘Temps Passats” antique shop in El Vergel, said the fair was “incredible” with the opportunity to buy as huge range of collectables at bargain prices. “Dealers are very interested in bringing good items to sell. It is very important there are so many beautiful things on offer and the prices are very good,” he added. Five injured in accident Five youths were hurt in a traffic accident on the A-7 in Nijar on Tuesday. Aged between 18 and 28 years, the males received injuries to varying degrees in the incident that occurred at the 481km mark of the A-7, in the direction of Cádiz. Their car skidded off the road. A call to 112 was made by a witness and once emergency services arrived at the scene, three of the injured were transported to El Toyo Hospital and the others were taken to the Torrecárdenas Hospital.

Expats Inheritance in Spain. Validity of Spanish Wills previous to the Regulation 650/2012 In today’s article we would like to comment on the recent resolution of the General Directorate of Registries and Notaries in Spain, on 15th June 2016, of an appeal against the decision of the Land Property Registrar of Orihuela (Alicante). The case concerned the inheritance of a British person, permanently resident in Spain at the date of death, who passed away after the entry into force of Regulation 650/2012, i.e. after the 17th of August 2015. Their Spanish Will was signed in 2003 before a public Spanish notary leaving all assets and properties to his wife, which is very common in the Anglo-Saxon legal tradition. In that Will, the testator had not chosen which country’s law to be the one to govern the succession. European Regulation 650/2012 is applicable in Spain to all inheritances, regardless of the nationality of the deceased. The Land registrar apparently understood that since the testator had not expressly chosen which national law to govern the succession ( professio juris ) then Spanish law, as the country of the deceased’s habitual residence, should be applied. Thus, the wife could not inherit everything, and the children of the deceased were entitled to their share of the inheritance (forced heirship) as indicated in the Spanish Civil Code. But his conclusion was wrong! Since the Will was granted prior to August 17, 2015, the application of Article 83 of Regulation 650/2012 applies, where in its point 4 states: 4. If a Will disposition is granted before 17th of August 2015, in accordance with the law which the deceased could have chosen, ..it shall be deemed that the law has been chosen as the law applicable to the succession. Thus, it should be understood that although not expressly said on the Will, the testator at the time of making his will wanted it in accordance with his own national law, and therefore it should be understood that he/she opted for such, meaning English law should govern the inheritance, making it was completely possible for the spouse to inherit the whole estate. Negative bank rates have arrived When the European Central Bank introduced a negative interest rate on lenders’ deposits two years ago, few thought things would ever go this far. This week, a German cooperative savings said it’ll start charging retail customers to hold their cash. From September, for savings in excess of 100,000 euros , the community’s Raiffeisen bank will take back 0.4 percent. That’s a direct pass through of the current level of the ECB’s negative deposit rate. “With our business clients there’s been a negative rate for quite some time, so why should it be any different for private individuals with big balances?,” Josef Paul, a board member of the bank, said by phone on Thursday. For those of you with money in other European countries including the UK , watch out whilst you are currently not being charged to hold your cash, by leaving it languishing in a bank account, happy to get a measly interest rate you are in fact losing money . With the recent rate cut in the UK most probably not the last, banks and building societies immediately cut the rate they are giving to savers with the average savings account in the UK paying just 0.53% according to Moneyfacts. This means millions of UK savers are now losing money following the latest rise in the cost of living. Official UK figures published on Tuesday showed CPI inflation crept up to 0.6 per cent in the year and RPI 1.29%. It’s a similar story in the EU where you are lucky if you can get 0.25% as an average on deposit account. So what’s the best course of action, firstly we all need to where possible keep some money in an easy access account to cover emergencies, then you need to seriously think about investing , even with market volatility it offers the only possibility of you making a reasonable return on your cash in the next five years . Spain banks offer an investment account similar to the UK ISA, the amount you can invest is small €5,000 per person and it has to be invested for 5 years but it has to be at least 85% capital guaranteed. Next there are investments in the stocks markets, there are many out there, but with the right advice you can find one that is right for you, they are very tax efficient here in Spain from and income tax and inheritance tax perspective and any money you invest is automatically reported so no need to fill in the dreaded Modelo 720. Sheer harp attack

MUSIC FANS are in for a treat when some of Spain’s best blues harmonica players battle it out in the Costa Blanca Blues’ second annual showdown called ‘Harp Attack’. The event will be staged on Sunday 18th September and will mark the return of a number of musicians who featured in last year’s Teulada gig plus some new faces. And organisers CBBlues - now launching its fifth year of supporting, celebrating, and promoting the blues - believes it will be the largest gathering of ‘harp’ players on one stage in Spain; duelling together and attempting to blow the roof off the Grand Salon at Teulada’s Bar Mediterraneo. Harmonica player Peter Murphy is looking forward to his second year of the festival of fun which will include Danny Boy Sanchez and Buddy Paul. Peter was aged nine when he caught the blues bug from his elder sister, who was a big fan of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and was also influenced by her favourite singers Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. He was 18 when he discovered the master of blues harmonica Sonny Boy Williamson and knew his own destiny was to play the harp – he even saw Sonny Boy playing live at the Black Prince, Bexley, in 1963 as a surprise guest of the legendary Yardbirds. BLUES FAMILY Peter and his wife Carol started coming to the Costa Blanca on holiday a few years ago, discovered CBBlues, and are now part of its big blues family. “In the Valencian blues scene, Danny Boy Sanchez really shines,” said the British bluesman. “Danny Boy’s technique and variety of styles not only equals Sonny Boy Williamson but I think he surpasses Sonny Boy. Another great harp player on the local scene that stands out for me is Buddy Paul.” Peter is already excited about taking part in the second Harp Attack and promises there will be a huge contrast in style as each musician brings their own skills to the fore to encourage and challenge each other. “It was an honour and a pleasure to play with them all last year...and I’m really looking forward to 18th September and the opportunity to join them all again,” he said. “All the performers were more than willing to pass on their advice and techniques, so any wannabe blues harp players should come along and enjoy this year’s event.” Pictured in Danny Boy Sanchez on stage – for more information go to www.cbblues.com.

Yahoo has a “block sender” option, which stops emails from certain email addresses coming into your account. Open or select an email from the sender you want to block. Click More | Block. Select “Send all future emails to Spam,” “Delete all existing emails,” or select both. Click OK. Or mark that email as Spam, and get Yahoos to investigate and block the source. Select the email you’re reporting. Click Spam. Spam button The message will be sent to your Spam folder. But many people say that the best way to stop getting Spam in Yahoo is to quit Yahoo and move to Gmail,, who seem to be more proactive in Anti Spam measures.

“I worked at the Greene King brewery in Bury St. Edmunds for 30 years,” says Mick Baldwin from Risby, just down the road from where we stay at The Highwayman’s.

“In the old days you could pack in your old job on a Friday and start a new one on the Monday. That’s what I did on a number of occasions. I started off working in a hospital and had a series of jobs until I ended up at Greene King, a stone’s throw from Risby. There wasn’t really an interview. A number of my relatives worked for them and that was good enough. I started off on the ground floor and then worked my way up to become a beer tester; a job I enjoyed for 20 years. I had to ensure that the beer was brewed correctly and had the right amount of alcohol in it for Customs. In the early days there were great perks including a beer a day. At that time the managing director knew the names of all staff regardless of their position. It was a great family run business and you felt the management cared. When my wife and I married we even had a free bar. Guests told me it was the greatest party they had been to but we didn’t see it because we had to leave at 9pm to go on our honeymoon.” Eventually Mick applied for redundancy and took early retirement. “I didn’t like how the process was being automated,” he recalls. Founded in 1799, today Greene King is the UK’s largest pub retailer and brewer owning 1,600 pubs nearly all selling cask conditioned beer. A major Suffolk employer the company is listed on the London Stock Exchange. While I was familiar with this business I wasn’t expecting to bump into a past employee with such a fascinating tale to tell. We stay at the Highwaymans, which, in the 18th century, was a favourite haunt of notorious highwaymen. You can imagine

them settling down to a good night’s sleep after robbing some poor unsuspecting soul. Later it was the spot of a vineyard and in fact during our visit we spy some young vines that have been successfully planted. Today, The Highwayman’s is owned and run by Juliet Fisher and her five children. When our daughters Harriett (5) and Heidi (3) play outside on the bikes and pedal cars we bump into Meralina (5) and her brother Noah (9). It’s great to see that the four of them instantly hit it off and start talking about school and their interests. Meralina quickly notices that she has the same shoes as Harriett. As Meralina hares around on her bike she stops to say: “I learnt to ride this when I was four.” Noah, a keen footballer, chips in that there’s a holiday cottage, various rooms, and caravans can even stay for £10 a night on the eight acre site. We stay in a family room, which really does have the wow factor. Large windows let in lots of light to the master bedroom and the accompanying window sills cry out to be sat on, I find; an ideal spot to sit and make notes. Wildlife paintings on the walls and antique furniture help to make a stay here a great occasion. It reminds us of a plush hotel

but with the added family appeal. The girls have their own separate bedroom complete with bunk bed, which can be shut off from ours. As is often the case the first night is never great because Harriett and Heidi take time to adjust and so they keep getting up to mess about. Anyway, bleary eyed we pray that the second night gets better. Thankfully it certainly is. We all enjoy their 12 hours sleep. My wife, Caroline even grabs a few hours more than she is used to but not enough of course because of little Henry’s (4mths) teething, which has seen him develop a nasty cough. When he wakes up at 1am he insists on clinging to mummy and nobody else. The beds are comfortable and there is peace and quiet, when our children finally get to sleep. For business travellers there is wi-fi. The Highwayman’s is not just a place to rest your weary head, there are regular events. “We have clay pigeon shooting every two weeks, regular yoga classes and even art exhibitions,” says Juliet. In fact the current exhibition features selected professional artists from Creative Coverage including Clare Blois, Gerry Defries, Susie Lidstone and Clive Meredith. Rockeries can withstand long droughts well

Rockeries can be usefully included in the design of both small and large gardens. Thoughtfully located, designed and planted up they can look pleasing at all times of year and most importantly can require little watering even during the hottest summer months. They can look good as round oval or irregular islands, long strips on top of and on the face of dry stone terraces, surrounds to ponds, earth retaining slopes surrounding above ground swimming pools, an enhancement of a natural hillside, and as mini ones in large containers or on a growing table. If starting a new garden they are a good way of hiding piles of builder’s rubbish. Some success factors 1. Have a clear view of the type of rockery you wish to develop before you start. 2. Weed the area well before you start. Avoid weed killers as residual chemicals could kill off your new plants. 3. Build up the rockery from the lowest point, plant by plant and rock by rock. Be sure that each rock is stable before you add the next. 4. Plant with the roots of plants covered by rocks to provide shade and areas of residual moisture even during dry spells. 5. Use a rich water retaining sandy or gritty soil under and between rocks. 6. Mulch around plants with small rocks or fine volcanic rock. 7. Stand back after each group of plants to view the whole to see how the overall rockery is evolving. 8. Aim to have a plant in each hole between rocks. Useful types of plants Short and limited spread. E.g. Succulants, dwarf irises, thyme and gazanias. Short and spreading. E.g. Creeping trhyme, verbena, , messems, and oregano. Medium height and limited spread. E.g. Cactii, sage, succulents and ajania. Medium height and spreading. E.g. Short rock roses, creeping rosemary, dwarf junipers, arctotis, cacti, freesias and grevillias. Taller but limited spread. E.g. Taller rock roses, irises,

sages, aeoniums, rue dwarf conifers and alliums. Taller but spreading. E.g. Lavender, lantanas, agaves and brooms. Maintenance required 1. Seasonal deadheading. 2. Annual cut back to keep plants to allotted space. 3. Remove plants that have become too large and dominating or upset the balance of the rockery.

4. Occasional weeding. 5. Clearing out of accumulated debris between rocks. 6. Occasional topping up of mulching material. 7. Removal and replacement of dead plants. 8. Dreambeach Success by Jack Troughton The Dreambeach festival held on the beach at Villaricos came to a close last Sunday after another successful year of intense dancing to some outstanding performances by artists including 50 Cent, Die Antwoord, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Oscar Mulero and Jeff Mills. The festival continued for four days, one more than in previous years, but the crowds didn’t dwindle and the move to the new site, closer to the camping area and the beach, proved popular with an estimated 160,000 visitors partying under the spectacular light displays and the notable sound improvements on previous events. Local businesses have also profited from the fiesta; the camp site was fully booked from the previous Wednesday with a total of 30,000 people staying there and hotel occupancy in the area reached 100%. It is estimated that Dreambeach has brought around €6 million to the local economy.

Run to support ALS research ENTRANTS IN the San Miguel de Salinas Popular Race next month will help support people suffering from ALS – the neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It is the sixth year of this annual event and organiser CD Correbike hopes runners will pay a ‘solidarity’ registration fee – slightly higher than the standard registration - to help fund research into a condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spine; it causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately respiratory failure. Awareness of ALS has risen thanks to the global success of the ‘ice bucket challenge’, where people – including celebrities around the globe – dumped freezing water over themselves to raise cash for research. The San Miguel run takes place on Saturday 10th September from 8.30pm. The start is in Plaza de la Libertad and the course is 7km. There is also a children’s race at 7pm. The organisers believe sport is “essential” to teach youngsters “the values and benefits of sport”. Entrance is 10€, the ‘solidarity’ registration is 12€. Go to www.cronoevento.es. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// If you´ve ever wondered what 1,000 people covering David Bowie’s hit ´Rebel Rebel´ sounded like, you’re in luck as I´ve found a video of a stadium full of musicians paying tribute to the late star, and the 70´s expression ´it will blow your mind´ fits extremely well. Last week Rockin’ 1000, who describe themselves as the world’s biggest rock band, performed the song at Orogel Stadium in Cesena, Italy, and the 1000-strong band included singers, drummers, guitarists and even a handful of bagpipe players. What’s interesting about this project is that anyone can volunteer to join Rockin’ 1000 via their official website, so go check it out. So what is it that you´re up to Zayn? Zayn Malik has landed a major role in Hollywood, but unlike his two One Direction buddies Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson who´ve got themselves acting work, Zayn will be working behind the camera.

According to The Sun Zayn has been given the role of executive producer in upcoming USTV series ´The Premise´ … and what is the show about I hear you ask? Would you believe behind-the-scenes of a successful boy band! The show will follow the rise of a fictional group, albeit that they can all sing and play, and we will see them as they land a record label and subsequently become a massive success, and I´m sure the underlying plan is for the group to go from fictional to real, and, hey presto, yet another boy band! Zayn told Elle UK, “I started acting when I was in school with theatre studies and then music came after that, but I completely stopped when I joined One Direction, but I’d definitely be interested if I was given the right role!” So not entirely behind the camera then Zayn!!

It’s quite remarkable how technically clever folks are when it comes to mixing music and film for our entertainment. There’s some great end-of-line zingers from The Lion King’s Scar screaming ‘DENIAL’ and Nick Cage’s terrible cry of ‘BEES’ in the Wicker Man remake even getting a showcase. If you´re like me and sometimes wonder what it´s like behind the scenes of a soap opera, of, say for example ´Emmerdale´ then you are in luck! Following the popularity of the annual village tours, fans can now buy tickets to visit the former interior sets. Housed at Burley Road in Leeds, where the soap was filmed until recently, The Emmerdale Studio Experience offers viewers a guided tour around locations such as the Dingle home and the Woolpack interior while also sharing backstage secrets and explaining how the episodes are pieced together. This dizzie delight ends with the ultimate souvenir of a photograph of you behind the bar at The Woolpack. The first tours begin on Saturday 3rd September with tickets available from now. It’s never difficult to find a tale or three every week about Madonna, a lady who has been there and done it and got several tee-shirts! However this time around it’s the most bizarre story of idiotic bureaucracy, and for once I´m kind of siding with the 57 year old from Bay City, Michigan ... Kind of! She has a $7.3 million home in Harperley Hall co-op, a ritzy building located at West 64th Street and Central Park West, and our material girl is currently suing the board for trying to enforce a rule that requires her to be “in residence” at the apartment when any members of her family or staff are staying there! The problem stems from Madonna having taken two years to file the lawsuit against the building, saying she was unaware of the rule ... Silly Silly Madge!

She constantly interferes Since the birth of our baby daughter, my mother in law constantly interferes. She will say, ‘that’s not the way we used to do it’. I know it annoys my husband too, but he hasn’t said anything to her yet. It’s getting worse, and she wrote down all her ‘tips’ the other day and gave me a list of dos and don’ts. I am coming to the end of my tether, and feel I will snap if something isn’t said, but I do feel it my husband’s place to say something. It might be your husband’s place to say something, but up to now, he hasn’t. You could ask him to have a quiet, calm word with his Mum, or next time she offers her opinion, rather than say nothing, thank her and say that her suggestions have been taken on board, but you’d like to try our own way right now. Some of her suggestions might even be good ones, and it may help for you to take her advice every now and again to diffuse the situation. It’s all about give and take.

SAILORS FROM cruising group SAMM and their ‘famous five’ yachts enjoyed a summer adventure out of the Mar Menor and across to the Balearics. Each boat was carried supplies for two weeks and 18 crew set sail for first Calpe and a ‘flotilla’ journey across to Ibiza and Formentera, Plans went awry at Calpe – two yachts had problems that cost another day – but the remaining three crossed to the islands; a memorable highlight for all was being in the midst of a pod of some 30 dolphins, the aquatic mammals performing around the boats for around 20 minutes. The remaining yachts caught up the following day and the entire fleet enjoyed independently exploring the many coves and bays – meeting up in San Antonio to celebrate one skipper’s birthday. The crews enjoyed some great sailing and adventures before the yachts independently crossed back to the mainland; encountering very different weather conditions but everyone made it safely. Animal magic party PETS IN Spain is holding a Pool Party and Barbeque on Monday 12th September at The Posh Club on La Marina Urbanisation. Estar in the past This article is one of a short series on the uses of “ser” and “estar” in two of the most common past tenses. Another way of saying the same thing is that the articles are about the translation of the word “was”, although as I have already explained, any attempts at direct translation can lead us down a number of blind alleys. Last week we talked about the use of “ser” in a general way in both past tenses, so this week we have to look at examples of the use of “estar” in the past. However much I nag about these two verbs, (and believe me, I can nag) I still find people clinging to the belief that the difference between them is connected to the ideas of “temporary” and “permanent”. This explanation may help us initially, but as soon as we start to explore the use of the two verbs, it creates more problems than it solves. The basic problem is that this concept of the two verbs relies on an idea related to “time”. Once we start changing the time scale, i.e. by putting “ser” and “estar” into past or future tenses, we are losing any meaningful concept of “temporary” and “permanent”. I talked about this last week, so I won’t go on. Instead I will start by referring back to my imperfect, but much more useful, definition of “estar”, as referring to “how” or “where”. I think it is quite clear that we can talk about “how” or “where” things were in the past. Here are some examples: “estuve en su casa ayer” (I was at his - her or their -house yesterday). “Estaba en su casa ayer cuando vino el cartero” (I was at his - her or their - house yesterday when the postman came). Don’t forget, my mission at the moment is not to explain why the first sentence uses “estuve” and the second uses “estaba”, I am simply giving examples of when this particular verb is used (and not “ser”) to express the idea of “where”. Now here are some examples of “how” in the past tense: “Yo estaba enferma cuando me vino a visitar” (I was ill when he came to see me). “Estuve muy enfadado con él por su comportamiento ” (I was very angry with him because of his behaviour). Both of these examples describe “how”, that is in what “state” someone was in, in the past, in this case ill and angry,

although they don’t have to be negative states! As you may realize I am treading very carefully on stepping stones here, and probably raising as many questions as I am answering, but the idea is that each point regarding verbs and tenses will be covered step by step if you just stay with me for a few more weeks! One other use of “estar” which I have not yet mentioned is that it can combine with other verbs to form a continuous tense. In the present we can say, for example, “estoy aprendiendo español” or “estamos escuchando música” (I am learning Spanish. We are listening to music). This formation can also be used in the past – “estaba aprendiendo español” and “estábamos escuchando música”. Again, this leads to other questions about the meanings of tenses, but really all I am trying to do at the moment is illustrate three uses of the verb estar, namely – where, how and as part of some compound tenses. Many years ago during my hitchhiking wanderings I pitched up at Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens. There was a 20 piece orchestra playing & singing with them was the unannounced Mr. Tormé - who was brilliant. The reason I mention it - have you come across anyone famous, unheralded, in unlikely places? My earliest memory of sharing the same oxygen as a star was in Woebegone Worthing’s Sainsburys where ‘The Girl With The Giggle In Her Voice’ – Alma Cogan draped in a fur coat was buying fish cakes. When this awkward 11¾ year old asked for her autograph, she unladylike told me to –albeit with a giggle in her voice - “Bugger off!” Didn’t like her daft records anyway–’Never Do A Tango With an Eskimo’ (UK #6 1955) for heavens sake. Come with me to a back street Lancastrian pub in Ramsbottom where I met in the loo, by happenstance, Allan Clarke (not the late rumbustious politico diarist) the lead singer with The Hollies. This was a great thrill for me – hold fire, bearing in mind the location I’ll rephrase that. He’s always been one of my favourite warblers from that era & what a nice bloke - also there was mutual empathy. He has a wonky eye like mine – shared with Robert Mitchum & Bobby Darin. To be brutally honest, with the aforementioned, you ladies would simper “Oooh! Bedroom eyes, one two unbuckle my shoe.” With me one eye is looking at the mantelpiece, the other’s looking up the chimney – attractive huh? Flying from Alicante to the UK recently I sat next to a vaguely familiar chap in his mid 60’s. We got into a conversation for no other reason than to distract us from the brats behind kicking our seats. Turned out he’d just been playing a shifty character in the TV show ‘Benidorm’-all rise for Robin Askwith of Confessions From A Holiday Camp/ Window Cleaner/Driving Instructor/Pop Performer fame. A forlorn franchise that made ‘On The Buses’ & ‘Carry On’ capers look like an Ingmar Bergman tour de force. Chicken and chorizo paella Ingredients 85g chorizo sausage, diced 1 tbsp olive oil 350g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into 2.5cm chunks 1 large onion, chopped 2 celery sticks, diced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 1 green pepper, deseeded and diced 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced 250g Camargue red rice 4 tomatoes, finely diced 2 bay leaves 2 sprigs of fresh thyme 750ml boiling water 200g frozen peas 200g frozen sweetcorn 15g fresh parsley, chopped Method Prep:25min â&#x20AC;ş Cook:45min â&#x20AC;ş Ready in:1hr10min 1. Dry-fry the chorizo in a large, heavy-based saucepan or flameproof casserole over a medium heat for

about 2 minutes, stirring continuously. Add the oil and chicken and increase the heat slightly, then cook for about 5 minutes until coloured all over, stirring occasionally. Remove the chicken and chorizo from the pan using a draining spoon and set aside. 2. Add the onion, celery, garlic and peppers to the oil remaining in the pan. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened slightly. Stir in the rice, tomatoes, bay leaves and thyme, then replace the chicken and chorizo and pour in the water. Bring back to the boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low, cover and cook gently for 25 minutes. 3. Add the peas and sweetcorn, forking them lightly into the rice mixture. Our guests were many today, and they were Derek Lindley, Richard Lindley, Martin Livesey, Richard Morris, Chris Andersen, Simon Waldren and Ian Sharp. All were The competition today was a “Texas Scramble Team Competition” and with the course and the greens returned to their normal pristine condition, the scene was set for an exciting tournament In the main part of the competition, the results were as follows Texas Scramble Results 1st Place Score:- 60.8 was the team of David O’Connor, Terry Langley, Donna Green and Peter Cornes 2nd Place Score:- 61.2 was the team of Martin Livesey, ian Sharp, Iain Campbell, and Roger Brown 3rd Place Score:- 61.6 was the team of Dave Collins, Derek Lindley, Richard Lindley and Paul Singh All very tight with only 0.8 between the first three team, so

well played to all, especially our guests for the day. There were three 2’s today, and they were by John Guest, David O’Connor, and Brian Barden. The “Balls in the Water” prize numbered 98 balls in the water and that was won by Brian Barden. Golf tournament is new pin up by Jack Troughton THE FIRST ‘Torneo Villa Mojacar’ attracted 90 golfers to the town’s Marina Golf Course and a successful introduction to the province’s summer sport calendar. Sponsored by Bridgestone and organised by Mojacar Town Hall with the host club, the competitors enjoyed an excellent morning’s golf and “very respectable” score cards were returned to the clubhouse. The awards in the individual ‘stableford’ were divided into two categories and there was a reward for the best round according to handicap. The winner of the first group was John Graves and second was Gustavo Renno; the second group was won by Juan Lopez Saez with Francisco Gonzalez Garcia, playing

on his home course was second. The scratch award went to Javier Abellan Berruezo, also playing at home. Prizes were presented by Mojacar’s Councillor for Sport Ana Garcia who declared the inaugural tournament “a great success” and confirmed the competition would return next year. She invited players and their families to return and enjoy the golf and the town’s beaches and many attractions – the competition has already been included in the official Lorca Golf Club circuit. And the day ended with players enjoying a cocktail and the eagerly awaited prize draw for Bridgestone golf equipment. Billy’s birthday bash To celebrate reaching the ripe old age of 70 our treasurer sponsored this month’s fun day, and a lot of fun was had by all and with glamour, treats and shot’s being provided by Bills wife Monica, and Carol our hostess from Rayz bar all was set for a great day. It all started with our sponsor being the first to tee off, with a great

audience watching and a loud cheer Bill proceeded to drive his first shot into the bushes before disappearing down the fairway with balloons and bunting flying. The competition for the day was a two ball scramble and with the course in great condition and the weather fair everyone enjoyed the day. The heat and the increasing hours of sunshine are the main causes for sleep deprivation in summer The heat and the longer hours of sunshine are the main causes for sleep deprivation. For that reason many people turn to sleeping with air conditioning, open windows or use fans. According to Dr. Gonzalo Pin, coordinator of the Sleep Unit for Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, in summer there are four circumstances that could affect our sleep, “if the temperature is greater than 22 degrees the onset of sleep is difficult therefore more movements and night time awakenings. Also the increased noise levels from outside when we open windows, more people on the street, the noise form the air conditioning machine etc. Our hearing is in “waking activity” hindering the depth and continuity of our sleep.” The second cause that affects our sleep in the summer is the duration of light-dark natural cycle: as the daylight hours increase, night time falls later and this affects our internal biological clock “its set time” depending on the light we receive spontaneously depends on our bedtime. Our biological night in summer is somewhat shorter than in winter. Another reason is the change in our daily habits, says Dr. Pin, “we get up later, eat and drink differently, we extend our leisure time and we lose the routine from the beginning to the end of our sleep patterns sleeping more irregular

hours. Sleep is a habit that requires external elements to perform properly and consistency between these elements is critical. “ The logical answer to all of this is practicing a healthy summertime habit of having an afternoon nap which improve our intellectual activity and our mood. But you must have an adequate duration of about half an hour and we should avoid naps very late in the day because they contribute to further delay of sleeping at night. Tips for better sleep in summer The experts recommend that we follow these tips to achieve better sleep during this time of year, like ventilating the room hours before bedtime, eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated. According to Dr. Esteban Vicente, a specialist in neurophysiology of the Sleep Unit of Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “to have restful sleep during the summer period it is very useful to have clear strategies to maintain proper sleep hygiene.” Some of the practical aspects to improve sleep in summer are: Breathe properly: With a simple technique you can get it, you must be laid face up and in a comfortable position, close your eyes and relax your muscles, breathing slowly three times without forcing the breath and the end

of the third breath hold without breathing in air. It is important that the breathing is not forced, repeat the cycle six to eight times. Adequate food: It is very important to eat a balanced diet and keep well hydrated. Do not smoke close to bed time and drink moderate consumption of coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks from noon onwards. Go to bed half an hour after eating normally and at least 2 hours if you have eaten a large meal. Finally, you should dine lightly with low fat and calories. The intake should contain vegetables (rich in tryptophan, amino acid precursor of serotonin and melatonin), few proteins and dairy. Avoid cakes and moderate alcohol consumption. Although dinner should be light you should not go hungry. Conditioning the sleeping environment. Avoid excessive heat and noise in the room. The room must have a temperature of 20-22 C. Use a firm mattress with washable and breathable sheets and avoid sleeping with drafts. If ambient noises bothers you use earplugs. Finally, if it light bothers you or your partner usually sleeps watching TV use a mask it will also eliminate the bright light of the mornings. Finally, take a hot shower to relax and wear comfortable cotton clothes for sleeping these are guidelines that will help us sleep better.
