Raising the roof by Jack Troughton
HOUSEHOLDERS ARE being warned to be on their guard over the latest scam to hit the Marina Alta – a conman offering to repair loose tiles on a roof. The trickster claims he has noticed a problem and offers to fix it before lifting tiles himself and demanding an inflated fee to put them right. Angry couple Irene and Geoff Posket were alerted by the noise; discovered the fraud and ordered the builder to leave their home in Valle de Portet, Benitachell – but still face a large to repair the damage to a warren of holes. “This was daylight robbery and sheer vandalism,” said Irene. “Our builder says the tiles have been deliberately pulled out, breaking tiles and the cement. He said you would have to really tug hard to lift them.” The conman did not give his name or leave a card with the pensioners. They believe he spoke with a German accent and drove a dark blue or black Mercedes. They described him as a short man, heavily built and wearing a white t-shirt. “First of all he said he had been working at the top of the road and noticed we had some tiles off,” said Irene. “I know tiles do slide sometimes and didn’t think much of it. “He said he had his ladder and went up to have a look. Rather than call my own builder just to put a few tiles back, I agreed.” Irene and Geoff said the man was on the roof for over 20 minutes and they could hear loud noises. “He came down and said he had taking some pictures and said the roof was in a terrible state.”
