Waiting for a Starr to fall

BRITISH COMEDIAN Freddie Starr has moved into his new Marbella apartment leaving a £1 million legal bill back in the UK.

by Jeanette Rice THE STAR lost a libel court case filed by Karin Ward who claimed Freddie Starr had put his hand up her skirt when she was a teenager, just 15 years old. This has left him with the huge legal bill that it would appear still remains unpaid.

Fleeing to his new apartment the comedian is reported to be suicidal by some of the British media and hadn’t been seen out in public for at least two months until this week.

Freddie Starr, aged 72, brought his new apartment just six weeks ago having sold his house in Warwickshire two weeks previously but hadn’t been seen in public since the sale of his house.

It would appear that instead of paying around £1million to cover the legal fees and court costs as he was ordered to by the judge, Mr Starr liquidated his assets and left the country.

His disappearance was only discovered last month after he failed to make the first payment of £334,000 and court officials tried to serve a statutory demand order to his home. This is

when details that he had sold his home in Studley, Warwickshire, for £695,000 two months ago became public.

The comedian was finally spotted at the beginning of this week sitting in a bar in Marbella with an unknown female friend.

Other customers at the bar reported that they heard Freddie Starr saying to his friend that he was having trouble sleeping and then he spoke with another customer saying “I just feel tired all the time.”

Freddie Starr was originally arrested during Operation Yewtree, which was instigated following the Jimmy Saville revelations, but following a police investigation no charges were made.

Miss Ward then took legal action against the comedian who claimed that when she was a 15 year old pupil at Duncroft Approved School he behaved inappropriately with her.

Mr Starr did not wish to be interviewed by any of the press and sped off in his Mercedes convertible with his friend in silence.

Ombudsman criticises Marina Alta health services THE VALENCIAN Ombudsman, Jose Cholbi, has criticised the health services in the Marina Alta area of the Costa Blanca stating that improvements must be made.

by Jeanette Rice SNR CHOLBi has called upon the Department of Health to ensure that the “organisational and budgetary effort to allow a dignified treatment of patients be maintained”, particularly during the summer months where there is a “lack of equal access to health benefits.”

The Ombudsman’s conclusions were that despite complaints that were filed in January 2014 being resolved last July the Platform for the Defence of Public Health of the Marina Alta were still finding that major breaches were being made in the law for supplying equal health services.

In particular Snr Cholbi highlighted that there had been and still appear to be “a series of failures” that the company Marina Salud, who hold the licence for health in the Marina Alta, had repeatedly made.

Amongst the many violations that the company has been accused of breaching is the free choice of hospital where the law states that the population of Marina Alta have the right to use the hospital network but there was evidence of a systematic blockade by the concessionaire.

The Platform also complained that preferential treatment had not been given to residents of the area saying Marina Salud “continually violated” this law along with a failure to build the promised second health centre in Denia and Calpe, instead choosing to reform and make an integrated health centre.

One of the major issues that the Platform raised with the Ombudsman was the overall quality of the health care, saying that since the privatisation of the management the “quality of healthcare delivery has dropped dramatically”.

The claim against the company is that many of the basic services have been reduced or removed with the elimination of the Child Mental Health Unit, the removal of security in the health centres, the closure of hospital beds therefore saturating the emergency department, a limitation on the home care services and the reduction in the number of specialist available. All of which they say is “putting economic criteria above clinical.”

Be careful where you park in Denia

VISITORS TO the local beach of Les Rotes in Denia couldn’t believe what they were seeing when they looked down to the waters edge. In an area specifically approached only by foot at the water edge was a lovely white Mini, near the micro reserve of plants next to the Helios.

The car, which had three young male passengers, had been parked next to the micro reserve minus the handbrake being applied. The car then rolled towards the beach area finally stopping at the waters edge.

It became clear that a standard Grua was not going to be able to help recover the mini and so a crane was despatched to lift the car back into the parking area next to the beach.

British man convicted for red head terror plot

IN WHAT can only be described as extreme, a British man has been convicted for plotting to murder around 2,500 non red headed people including members of the royal family.

MARK COLBORNE, aged 37, from Southampton intended to kill his victims with the deadly poison Cyanide after constantly being belittled by society for his red hair.

Mr Colborne was originally arrested last year following the discovery, by his mother and half brother, of a stockpile of chemicals and equipment under his bed that could be used to make cyanide, however at that time the jury failed to reach a verdict. But following a retrial at the Old Bailey last week, Mr Colborne was found guilty by a majority of preparing terrorist acts before his arrest on 3rd June last year.

The family reported the find to their local police who conducted a search of the room and found chemicals, charcoal, metal pipes and tubes, latex gloves and several manuals detailing how to make poisons and the quantities required to kill a substantial amount of people.

Mr Colborne was convicted last week on crimes of terrorism as police described to the court the contents of his diary and their descriptions of animosity towards what he deemed non Aryan races.

In the diary he spoke of his desire to rid the country of Prince Charles and Prince William, which would then mean red headed Prince Harry would become the future King.

One disturbing statement written was that “he is protected, but not too protected. I would sacrifice my life for that one shot. Kill Charles and William, Harry for King, kill the tyrants�.

Further details from the diary stated that he felt he was similar to the Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik, who attacked a youth camp in 2011, in that he was not a serial killer but merely readdressing what he considered to be the wrongs of society.

Sentencing will take place on November 3rd.

EU rule in favour of passengers THE EU court has ruled that airlines must compensate their customers when a delay has been caused by technical problems, giving the airlines less chances to wriggle out of paying passengers when problems arise.

by Jeanette Rice CONSUMER GROUPS and lawyers who have been fighting the airlines for some time have welcomed the decision by the European Court of Justice of one particular case where a Dutch woman had sought compensation from KLM after being delayed for 29 hours.

The reason the airline gave for the delay was because of “extraordinary” technical problems and they had refused to pay her.

In this case KLM argued that spontaneous technical problems did not entitle passengers to cash however the court ruled that “problems may be classified as extraordinary only if they relate to an event which is not inherent in the normal exercise of the activity of the air carrier concerned”.

In simple terms this means that the airline must compensate passengers unless the delay has been caused by incidents like a terrorist attack, a hidden manufacturing default or an act of sabotage.

Technical faults discovered during routine maintenance checks do not count as

extraordinary.

The ruling, which applies EU wide is the same as a judgement made by the UK’s Supreme Court last year, but clarifies the position for both airlines and consumers Europe wide.

Each passenger on an EU flight is able to claim up to €600 (£437) should their flight be delayed by at least three hours or even cancelled.

The international media has reported that one law firm, specialising in flight delay claims, believe that approximately 15,000 of their clients will now be entitled to compensation following this ruling.

The total amount of compensation in outstanding claims is estimated to be around 4.5 million pounds as the airlines prepare themselves for further claims to be made now that the rules have been clarified.

One money watch programme presenter in England said “this can only be good news for the consumers, who for too long have felt that the airlines could get out of paying for travel disruption due to technical issues”.

That sinking feeling in Denia THE PORT of Denia became the scene of fire engines and water pumps last week as a luxury yacht sank whilst moored in the harbour.

THE BOAT apparently tipped for some reason and rapidly began filling up with water, pulling it further down because of the weight.

Waiting for the fire services the staff at the dockyard attempted to bail out the water using four small electric pumps but found that they were fighting a losing battle and the flow continued and threatened to completely sink the yacht.

It took six fire fighters and an additional four pumps to keep the boat afloat, taking over three and a half hours.

Luckily for the environment there was no fuel spillage but sources at the dockyard said they believed it was the Sea Falcon II which had recently had an extensive refit in July of this year.

The Sea Falcon is a 23 year old super yacht and was upgraded to bring it into the 21st century with major engine overhauls and new generators fitted together with a substantial internal remodelling.

The new owners had intended to take the boat around the world, which will obviously now be on hold until investigations are complete as to the cause of the incident.

Red Cross joins forces with the British Embassy AN AGREEMENT has been signed between the Red Cross (Cruz Roja) and the British Embassy to help expats gain easier access to the services and support that the Red Cross offers.

by Jeanette Rice IN THE nationwide cooperation agreement the aims are to help improved the quality of life for the most vulnerable expats and it was signed by the British Ambassador, Simon Manley, and the national vice president of the Spanish Red Cross, Javier Gimeno.

The agreement has been established to benefit not just the community but also the Red Cross as it is hoped that more British people will volunteer for Red Cross activities and therefore promote better collaboration with British community associations.

Signed on Monday, 21st September, at the headquarters of the Red Cross the initiative will be piloted in the Alicante province first, focusing on its large British community. It is hoped that following this there will a nationwide expansion aiding not just the Costa Blanca communities but those throughout Spain.

In a statement Simon Manley said “people in the British communities have a wealth of experience and skills, I really hope that this new partnership will encourage more volunteers to help support and benefit others. It will also help to ensure that British expats in the Alicante region have easier access to the wide range of Red Cross resources.”

Javier Gimeno added: “We have identified a large number of British people in our province who, because of their age and health, may require Red Cross services such as adapted transport, accompaniment and home care. Our aims are to inspire members of the British community to volunteer for the Red Cross and to encourage those who require assistance to take advantage of our services.”

Others who attended the signing ceremony were Pamela Twissel-Cross, the welfare officer for the Royal British Legion, representatives from Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur, the Samaritans, the Royal Air force Association, Help at Home, International Residents Daya Nueva, AFA Torrevieja, MABS Cancer Support, Help at Home Mar Menor, and the HELP groups in Denia, Benidorm, Jalón Valley, Vega Baja and Mar Menor.

Teulada & Moraira mayor meets with British Ambassador IN A bid to improve British integration into the towns the mayor of Teulada and Moraira met this week with the British Ambassador in Alicante.

by Jeanette Rice The meeting was organised to discuss the promotion of joint activities to assist the residents in the area.

The mayor, Carlos Linares, along with the towns councillor for international residents, Laura Hillstead met with Simon Manley, the Ambassador and Sarah-Jane Morris, the British Consul.

Teulada and Moraira are within the top ten towns in the province of Alicante that have more British residents than other nationalities and therefore the parties met to discuss ena-

bling the smooth integration of the British into the towns.

The importance of ensuring that everyone registered on the padron to enable funding for facilities was discussed as well as the benefits of being able to write to those residents to include them in local events, customs and legal requirements that may arise.

The mayor highlighted that the towns have an exclusive Department of International Resident Care to keep British residents within the municipality informed.

Ondara set to take refugees

THE MAYOR of Ondara met with other councillors yesterday to announce the proposals and plans for receiving refugees from Syria.

Zeus Serrano, the mayor, expressed the towns solidarity with the rest of the Valencian community in wishing to help offer a safe haven for those suffering in what he described as a “humanitarian crisis�.

The council will set up a centre to coordinate any actions necessary and promote a campaign of awareness to ensure that the residents of the town understand the reality of the refugees plight and help in whatever way they can.

Pool improvements in Calpe THE MUNICIPAL pool “Fernado Delgado” in Calpe underwent improvements in August in a bid to become more environmentally and energy friendly.

by Jeanette Rice CESAR SANCHEZ, mayor for Calpe, visited the pool to see for himself the improvements that had been made with the new installations that will reduce energy consumption and make the facility more efficient.

Other changes include new boilers, with thermal blankets for overnight to retain any heat ready for the following day as well as new flooring.

Previously the flooring was wood and caused many problems, this has been replaced with ceramic tiles which are specifically non slip, antibacterial and moisture resistant.

Jaime Ivars, the president of the swimming club said “the changes in the flooring was very important, it caused problems for moving about.

The new tiling is comfortable to walk on and easier to maintain and it is also easier to retain the heat as before it was being lost between the wooden slats.”

The work, which was carried out through the summer, was completed and when the mayor with his councillors carried out their inspection they were pleased to see that everything was in perfect condition.

Quality worked throughout the summer on various projects including many improvements for the local schools.

This work included general painting, plumbing, carpentry, gardening and upgrading electricity.

They also cleaned the classrooms and playgrounds to eliminate any insect infestations.

The school, Azorin, had new toilets fitted following constant repairs during the school term, Olta school had a lightning rod fitted, Paternina school saw repairs to the play area and in Gargasinidi school fences were repaired.

Flight prices affect hotel occupancy WITH THE SUMMER period over hoteliers in the region say that bookings are down and they are attributing this to the rise in flight costs particularly from the UK.

by Jeanette Rice ALTHOUGH FIGURES for September showed a rise of 3% in British visitors, bookings have now slowed down even though the average accommodation cost is 0.2% lower than the same time last year.

This, the hoteliers say, is due to an increase of nearly 50% in flight costs.

Anton Luti, President of the Association Business Travel Agencies in Benidorm (Avibe) said “the problem is many clients from England are paying up to 400€ to fly to Alicante. For that price some prefer to pay just a little more and go to resorts in the Caribbean for example”.

The association say that flight costs have risen between 40 and 50% which has affected the occupancy figures for September, with the President of Hosbec, Antonio Mayor, also commenting on the lower than expected bookings for the rest of the month.

Antonio Mayor stated that ticket prices have risen so much due to several factors including the price of oil and the high demand for popular routes.

Whilst oil prices are currently low the airline buy their fuel in advance and at a fixed cost so reductions in the overall oil price may not be reflected in flights until the new year.

Jet2 report that they have sold 30% more flights to Alicante for the summer period compared to 2014 but acknowledge that there could have been price increases due to the high demand.

Antonio Mayor is still upbeat and has predicted that the British tourists will search out inexpensive flights before Christmas and is predicting a 20% rise when the final figures come in for the rest of the year.

Help of Denia & Marina Alta at La Pedrera Hospital

ON 16TH September Candida Wright, President of HELP of DAMA along with other representatives from the Charity visited La Pedrera Hospital to present the Rehabilitation Unit and Director Sr Jaume Morera with a Walk Aide which is designed to assist patients regain the use of their legs and feet that have been affected after a stroke or brain tumour. The Aide is attached to the patient’s leg and then programmed by the Rehabilitation Staff to suit each patient’s unique needs. This piece of equipment which employs state of the art technology sends signals via the brain to the affected limb stimulating it to move normally. The visitors from HELP were able to watch a demonstration of the Walk Aide on two separate patients whose mobility was less than perfect.

Once attached the patients were able to walk with much more ease, one of them totally unaided. The effects were amazing and everyone agreed that this piece of equipment will be of great benefit to those who use it. Totally absorbed

Recently I heard of an EU directive for more Internet protection for children. But it is not a big surprise considering how so many children are totally absorbed by the Internet.

It appears the EU is keen to usurp parental responsibilities and make them the prerogative of Brussels. This might be welcomed by parents who are too lazy or too self absorbed to want to sit with their children and explore the Web, but it is nevertheless a sad indictment of modern families. Such parents will deny their children are totally absorbed in the Internet.

It appears that age seven is the average age of an Internet beginner which means there are many a lot younger who are being given unrestricted access. I fear that the Internet has become for many parents just another toy to keep little Johnny quiet while Mum and Dad do their own thing. For many families the Internet has absorbed the children where their whole interaction with other children is through social media.

Some parents argue that they are simply satisfying their child’s insatiable curiosity but that they are really doing is abrogating their responsibilities as parents for their children’s development.

The last few weeks has really been quite something. The Queen has become the longest reigning Monarch in British history, and we celebrate her accomplishments.

Then as well Mr. Jeremy Corbyn winning the leadership of the Labour Party. Of course there is plenty to celebrate about Queen Elizabeth, but what is quite astounding are the people most excited about Mr. Corbyn’s win.

There is considerable congratulations pouring in for Mr. Corbyn winning the Labour leadership, but why are they from Conservative supporters?

Gas bottle prices

I READ in the local free papers last week that the price of the small butane gas bottles was 12.76€ and this price is set by the government and reviewed every two months. Why is it then I had to pay 14.10€ in Moraira for a bottle only yesterday??

Plague of beetles found in Javea

AN AREA ravaged by fire a year ago is now being plagued by beetles which are ravaging the Montgo pines weakened in the fire.

by Jeanette Rice The Department for the Environment and the town hall of Javea have begun tackling the infestation which has affected hundreds of pines.

The plague has come about due to several factors. The weakening of the pines from the fire combined with the lack of rain has created an idea environment for the “Orthotomicus” beetle with a rapid spread of infestation in the last twenty days causing the trees to go a yellow colour.

The area affected mostly is the Sant Antoni which was also the hardest area hit by the fire just over a year ago where 444 hectares of Montgo Natural Park were destroyed.

Local biologist, Jaume Soler, has been to the area to inspect the trees and assisted the council in formatting a plan of action.

The affected pines are being felled and stripped of their bark. Then an insecticide is being used prior to locals being able to take away the wood to store for the winter.

Calpe receives award for cycle paths THE MAYOR of Calpe, Cesar Sanchez, was in Madrid on Tuesday to receive an award on behalf of the town for there implementation of cycle lanes and promoting bicycle use.

The mayor received the bronze award in the category of towns with 3,000 to 50,000 residents which is awarded annually by the Ministry of Environment for towns and cities that make the areas more sustainable whilst promoting mobility.

Cesar Sanchez said he believed in “an open and sustainable town, with good public transportation and good cycle paths designed for tourism as well as for the residents of the area”.

The council has a project where 24.5 kilometres of additional cycle paths will be implemented with 16.3 kilometres already being completed.

Pedreguer Toca-la Sam Festival 15 music festival THE CULTURAL association Toca-la Sam has announced the line up for their second music festival which will be held on October 17th in the Pedreguer Rockodrom room.

by Jeanette Rice THE MUSIC festival doesn’t only include pop rock bands this year as the line up has DJ’s, theatre performances, cinema type screenings and various other activities.

Following on from last years success the organisers have committed themselves to promoting emerging bands and decided that in the promotional material there would be no headline band, giving equal importance to all who perform.

Amongst the bands booked to play are a young trio from Santiago de Compostela called New Carminha, La Bien Querida from Bilbao who play a romantic style of pop and Passenger from Madrid who have caused a stir on social media as being a new and upcoming band for 2015.

Ensuring that the event is inclusive, the organisers have also invited bands from “underground” who are mostly considered non commercial, giving them a chance to showcase their music to a larger audience.

Autumn arrives WITH THE temperature gauge still sitting the mid 30s or high 80’s in old money, Autumn quietly arrived on at 10:21am on Wednesday, September 23rd marking the beginning of ‘Fall’ or Autumn in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere.

by Keith Nicol IT WAS at exactly this time that the Earth passed through the point marked as the Fall. Autumn equinox thus starts one of the changing seasons. Ahead of us, if you can believe it, we had 89 days and 20 hours until 22 December, the day on which Winter officially begins, and doing the maths, less than 90 days until Christmas...

For several weeks now it’s been much more noticeable that the days have been shortening with us losing around two hours of sunshine compared to the beginning of the summer. Over the past couple of weeks we have been losing approximately three minutes of daylight each day. In a month’s time it’s also time to wind the clocks back... Spring Forward: Fall Back... so on the night of 24th and into 25th October at 3am clocks should be set back to 2.00am, but you don’t have to wait up, you can do it before you go to bed.

The day of the autumn equinox, and in the spring, are the only ones where the sun is exactly at the cardinal points east and west. In summer, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, while in winter it appears to rise in the southeast and sets in the west, but in doing so

it travels less through our sky thus leaving us with fewer hours of sunlight in the Northern hemisphere. During the autumn of 2015 we will have the chance to enjoy a total lunar eclipse will be visible throughout Spain. It will take place this weekend on the evening of Sunday 27th to Monday 28th September. The eclipse will begin at 2:12am of Monday morning, with the moon entering the shadow of the Earth from 3:07am, reaching its maximum at 4:48am and ending at 7:22am. This astronomical phenomenon will not be repeated as a total eclipse until 2018.

The changing seasons bring with it the transition from warm to colder weather and carries with it a very changeable situation that can bring with it the heaviest rains the Costa Blanca usually receives throughout the year. With the arrival of autumn and the possibility of heavy rain, comes the often overused and incorrect use of the atmospheric condition known as “gota frías”. Torrevieja’s smooth cruise AFTER MONTHS of anticipation, as was first announced in the RTN before any other media, the elegant MS Amadea entered local History books, as the first cruise ship to visit the City of Salt.

ANCHORING JUST outside the Harbour Zone, a constant flow of guests from the cruise ship were tendered ashore from around 4.30pm to 9.00pm in the evening.

The sight of the cruise ship anchored at the port makes for a classic image. Hundreds of local residents and visitors made their way down to the harbour area, to see the cruise ship for themselves and somewhat to the bemusement of arriving passengers, the first couple of tenders full of guests were greeted with applause of appreciation as they stepped ashore. Almost 400 passengers came ashore to browse around Torrevieja’s downtown area, with specially prepared maps from the Costa Blanca Tourist Board being handed out to passengers by members of Torrevieja’s small and medium business association, APYMECO, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the visit of the ship was a success for passengers.

Some passengers stayed onboard until they had finished their dinner and so a second wave of guests arrived ashore from around 7.30pm to savour the sunny and warm evening in Torrevieja, enjoying the Mediterranean breeze and 28C temperatures as they browsed through the city centre, guided by their special maps that highlighted 35 shops and services and the city’s other

main points of interest.

While the ship’s visit was somewhat of a novelty for the primarily German guests, it should be overlooked that this initiative in Torrevieja is a “pioneer” among the municipalities in the area. It’s hoped that the feedback from the guests and cruise line will be positive and that Phoenix Reisen Cruises will continue with their proposed visit of one of their larger cruise ships, the Albatros, in October 2016. This is a planned full day visit to Torrevieja, which would allow more scope for local tour organisers to put together a more complete plan of action for visiting cruise ship passengers.

Looking ahead, some of the catalog of activities include water sports, gastronomy, beaches, excursions to natural parks, the Salinas salt production company, with its history and relationship with the city, traditional fishing, museums, culture, music and shopping plus excursions slightly further away to Cartagena, Licor 43, Alicante, Turon and Valor factories and many others.

The MS Amadea arrived with almost 600 passengers and 292 crew onboard. The ship is a small, self-contained miniature city with eight passenger decks, seven bars, two restaurants, a library, internet cafe, cinema, hospital, show room, laundry, beauty salon,

gym, massage room and sauna, Jacuzzi, photo gallery, cigar room and mini-golf.

The Costa Blanca Tourism Board have introduced a new Cruise Department within its remit with a view to promoting more cruise offers to the area and trying to attract more cruise ships to visit the region, with the MS Amadea being the first to open up eyes to the possibilities that cruise tourism can bring the region.

Although representation from Torrevieja was sadly lacking when I visited Seatrade Mediterranean in Barcelona last September, hopefully the arrival of this first ship will provide the impetuous needed for the region to look more closely at the possibilities in this special tourism sector. The data speaks for

itself: Spain received 4.29 million cruise passengers in the first seven months of 2015, representing a 11.18% increase over the same period last year. In fact, the sector generates more than 26,000 jobs. These figures confirm the forecasts made ??by the Port Authorities who predict a record high for the year end. Fingers crossed that the MS Amadea is the first cruise ship of many and now that more focus will be placed upon the fairly easy construction of a cruise ship docking area beside Marina Salinas. Local authorities and business send their thanks to Phoenix Reisen cruise line for showing their faith in Torrevieja by bringing the MS Amadea to the city. Abandoned pony rescued in joint operation A TINY pony found abandoned and wandering the streets has been saved by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in a joint operation with San Javier police.

by Patricia Thompson Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said she was called by police after they found the pony last Monday (September 7th).

Sue said if the Rojales rescue centre had refused to take the pony, police would have had no choice but to put it down.

“This is why we must always respond to police. There is no other suitable facility to take horses, ponies and donkeys in our area – we are their only option. If we did not take them, they would be destroyed. That’s why we never refuse to take these animals,” Sue said.

“In the past, there wasn’t anywhere to take these animals so police knew intervening was pointless and often didn’t respond to these cases. Now they know they can call us and we’ll take the animal, so they’re going in and seizing more mistreated and abused horses and ponies. Things are moving forward.”

The pony is the 122nd rescue brought to the Rescue Centre since it was opened eight years ago. Sue said the pony was about nine years old and in reasonable condition though quite shy and nervous.

“He doesn’t appear to have been used to a lot of handling so we don’t think he came from a very nice place,”

she said. “He’s very small, about the size of a large dog, and couldn’t be ridden so they obviously just turfed him out on the street.”

The centre, which relies solely on donations to fund its work, now houses 96 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from terrible situations of abuse and neglect.

Have you bought a very cheap property in Spain, and now been asked to pay more taxes?

DEAR LAWYER, A few months ago I bought an apartment and a villa in Spain, both resales, in the province of Alicante (Costa Blanca), for a very good price, both were real bargains.

NOW A few months after, I have received a letter from the tax authorities, Hacienda, saying they believe that the value of the purchased property is higher than the declared price, and are asking me to pay more tax. Is this legal? Can I do something?.

Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry.

It is common in this time of crisis find a real estate “bargain”, but is also very common that after purchase and signing the relevant deeds, the buyer receives a notice from the Taxman of the region where the property is located, indicating that the declared value is less than the real value, and therefore they request an additional amount of transfer tax, on top of the that already paid, since the declared value is lower than the real value, and theoretically the tax to be paid must be on the highest value.

As explained in a previous article, in connection with the revised values in Valencian Region by the Oficinas Liquidadoras, there is a very important court decision granted on the 1st of October 2013, judgment number 1336/2013 from the Superior Court of Justice of Valencia, where it was stated that the methods used so far by the administration to check and review the declared values were not adequate, since they were based on cadastral details of the property, and the properties were not visited,

so no individual assessments were carried out, etc.

Despite this judgment, the tax authorities continue issuing such Tax Liquidations and Penalties for Transfer Tax (TPO) on second-hand property purchases, as a result of these checks and revision of the “real values”, but after the indicated court decision, the administration has changed its strategy, and now: 1) They make visits to properties (although not in all cases).

2) The set the Extra Tax and the Property Value according to a legal rule (order) which is approved annually We understand that even though the tax authorities have changed the way they act, there are still many possibilities of successfully appealing this new tax revision. Although their valuations are consequences of administration surveyors visits, they do not respect what was stated in the mentioned judgment, because these valuations are not based on the state and condition of the property, rather they fix the value according to the coefficients and values set out in the annual order. Also we understand that this order, on which the valuation is based, has several formal defects that could even result in its invalidity.

It is important to know, that it is possible to appeal against these tax liquidations without the need to pay the fine or guarantee the money asked for by the taxman. The way to achieve this is by stating on the appeal claim that we reserve the right to ask for a contradictory expert valuation. By doing so, we can appeal without paying in advance, only paying at the end of the appeal if we lose it.

If the tax authorities claim against you for an extra payment of transfer tax because they understand that the real value of the property is higher than declared one, do not pay, contact us and we will inform you about your rights.

ALREADY THIS week we have had Cameron telling porkies and then the Chief Executive of Volkswagen coming out telling everyone he had lied to the public and the authorities all over the world about the emissions of their diesel cars.

VOLKSWAGENS SHARE price had fallen 40% in two days and other car companies and car manufacturing related companies share prices also tumbled all adding to the FTSE crashing towards 5900 and world markets also heading in the same downward direction.

What The Markets are desperate for is truth and honesty so when the establishment continues to let the public down the uncertainty can only have a negative effect. Winning trust back always takes much longer than losing it in the first place.

This leaves people wanting to invest their retirement nest eggs and pension funds in a huge quandary. Equities/Shares/Bonds have always been the main constituent of portfolios for long term growth and income but with markets how they are who knows where to put their hard earned savings.

The number one rule is always DIVERSIFICATION. Mixtures of shares, bonds, gilts, cash, property as well as currency will always help prevent disasters. Even putting large amounts with a single supposed blue chip can be dangerous. Just look at Volkswagen this week!

by Patricia Thompson THE AIRCREW Association Costa Blanca celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a formal Lunch at the Parador Hotel in Javea on Wednesday 16th September 2015.

Members and their guests were welcomed with a Cava Reception in the grounds of the Parador by the Chairman, Max Maxwell before adjourning to the banqueting suite for lunch.

Having been welcomed formally by the Chairman, a grace, appropriate for the occasion and written by Life Vice President Peter Langley, was said by the Association Honorary

Chaplain, Father Marcus Ronchetti.

After the meal, ‘A Dedication to the Comradeship of Aircrew’ was given by Father Marcus and this was followed by two toasts; to King Felipe, proposed by Peter Langley and to The Queen, by the Chairman.

Squadron Leader David Tucker, a serving RAF Officer who is based near Madrid, then gave a superb ‘Perspective of The Battle of Britain’ and proposed the toast ‘To Those Who Gave So Much’.

The proceedings were then drawn to a close by the President, Brian Weskett who proposed The Aircrew toast, ‘To Absent Friends and Fellow Aircrew’.

THE BASIC NEEDS To ensure the maximum yields each year, subject to seasonal by season weather conditions, you will need to prune, feed and take precautions against potential pest attacks. I suggest that you use ecological methods and products in order to end up with high quality ecological olive oil.

PRUNING There are four important types of pruning.

Remedial pruning of neglected olive trees When I took over a long abandoned olive grove we needed to do a 80 to 90 percent pruning the first year.

Regular winter pruning In the eight weeks after harvesting it is normal to cut out vertical growth which cannot be trained to grow horizontally or weeping, plus weak, deseased and dead growth. This will help channel sap to last year’s growth on which that years olives will form and stimulate new side shoots on which the following years flowers

and fruit will form.

Regular spring pruning Once the new flower buds can be seen a thinning of crowned branches and none flowering growth is made to stimulate larger olives. Depending on the health of the tree this can be a 5 to 20 % pruning.

Removal of suckers Suckers often sprout up from the lower trunk and shallow roots surrounding the base of the tree. These need to be removed to ensure all sap flows upwards to productive branches.

The main cutting off is in the winter but they are best trimmed off throughout the year when they first appear.

Having cut these off some producers cover the base of the tree to stimulate any further shoots to develop as new roots.

FEEDING Two types of feeding are beneficial. Firstly a late winter root feed using well rotted animal manures, powdered dried manures or proprietary ecological manures. Secondly ecological foliar feeds in early spring summer and autumn.

IRRIGATION Although olive trees are one of the most drought resistant trees. Yields of olives can be low if the trees experience long periods of drought. So in gardens water once a month and young trees for the first two or three years until a spreading network of roots has started to develop.

If you have a grove that can be irrigated do so. If not pray for autumn rains to swell the fruit.

SPRAYING There are number of pests that can affect yields and the quality of fruit. The most common are as follows.

The olive moth – feeds on flowers, eats kernels and bore into leaves - spray in spring.

The olive fly – infests olives during spring, summer and mostly in autumn – spray three times for greatest effect or use a trap with a bait on every or every other tree.

Sooty moulds and scales on leaves and twigs – Spray with a fungicide in winter and early spring.

Olive knot – small tumours on branches and twigs caused by bacteria entering wounds caused by beating olives off the trees, using hand rakes, poor pruning and hail and frosts – prune out badly damaged growth and stop using canes to knock off olives. Spray with a fungicide if a big problem.

Ecological products are available for each and the most convenient can be mixed together to reduce the number of sprayings required.

People may say that you have entered into a stubborn phase, but you are merely taking stock of what is really on offer right now, with a view of making some pretty sweeping changes. Rather then wait for the right time to come just make a play for what seems appropriate, what is good for the goose is going to have to be good for the gander.

Mercury’s midweek tryst with Neptune forces you to take control of a financial problem that seems to be more then just a storm in a teacup. Somebody isn’t paying their way and though you are well able to tighten your belt if you need to, why should you? A confrontation finally brings things amicably to a head midweek and problem solved!

The dreamy aspects of Moon energy this week is high contagious, and you will have a very chilled week in which a lot of things get done. Though not someone who usually procrastinates, the time has had to be right, and a lot of emotional clutter can be cast away, allowing you to focus better, and enabling you to love yourself more for a change.

At the end of a frenetic week the Sun nudges Neptune into touch and a clear signal is out there. Actions with Venus back affairs of the heart and you should wake up and smell the coffee. Somebody who would be close to you is too nervous to try to attract your attention, whilst you are too preoccupied to see exactly what this could mean to you!

Mercury opens channels and allows for effective communication in something which was veering out of control.

Whilst you are in pole position to take charge you have to better understand just why others have reacted in such a negative way. It may not be plain sailing but without a compromise nothing goes nowhere and what’s the point?

Whilst the Cosmos enjoys the harmonic convergence of a myriad of planets the result is energising and refreshing and should be inspiring to you. Whilst admittedly you do need something to get your teeth into, the delicate balance of the body is your trigger, and it is important that you maintain your innermost self and listen to what it is telling you.

Mars and Saturn herald a productive phase as things are turning out right for you for a change. There has been a process of adaption and elimination and you have happily learned from recent mistakes. With time to tune into your highly psychic energies much can be garnered if you stick to your guns and show you are not to be messed with!

Bittersweet energies see progress in one direction but not in another. As the Sun sets on the clear and concise energies of an ebullient Mercury, you have to put your trust where it belongs and take a stab at something you seem to think isn’t right. Time changes things and you may have to step off your high horse to see something through.

Pressure has made you make a decision you are already regretting. In hindsight you would never have got involved in all this, but now you are unfairly implicated you have to see that now the truth be told no matter who is hurt in the process, even if is you. Walk away holding your head high knowing that it was good while it lasted but no is no.

It is swings and roundabouts as Mars squares Saturn and the Sun conjuncts in Mercury. You have more then enough to deal with on your plate right now so do not allow anybody to complicate an already complex situation. Somebody does not want to hear the nitty gritty, but you are right to question that they do not seem to be thinking of you.

With actions this week from both Mercury and the Sun it would seem that the way is cleared for you to take some much needed time for yourself for a change. Allow work to pile up because you have to be in the right mood to do a good job, and now is a good time to focus on your own specific needs; as you prioritise and tune into your energies.

When negative issues burden us we are are calibrating luck to come to the rescue and make things right...and it doesn’t always happen like that. However so too does luck have a habit of running out of the door just when it would be more welcome to be inside and safely lying on the mat. We have various symbols that signify our luck. In exams it was lucky pens and pencils and the odd teddy bear that brought good luck to us by association but what was chiefly needed was always a good night’s sleep, a quick jog to the memory and adequate revision. In Vegas the gamblers are sensitive to people around them, and are conscious of luck coming their way in terms of individual personal energies which put them on a roll to scooping the many jackpots the city offers them. Luck be a lady tonight!

Thus we are really aware of the sensation of luck, hoping that it works well for us, but kind of enjoying that ultimately fate will decide; and if it is good for us then we are at least in there with a chance. Feeling the positive energy of an audience is an inspiration for me. Standing there on a stage I need the interaction of the audience above all, since without them there would be no show. As I pass on messages of survival and eternal love it’s good to be the messenger, but the energy of the audience is vital. When we are charged and energised then things start to go very well for us on the good days. So too are we all geared up for having a wonderful time and everything and anything can go wrong and spoil things for us. You make a reservation and that day in the restaurant the chef had the day off and the soup really was cold.

We can, and we do plan tomorrow to the most infinite detail and everything can go pear shaped, but so too can we do something in spontaneity that works with an amazing synchronicity as if we had lovingly planned each careful detail.

Superstitions are put in place because they stand in the absolute way of good luck and bring us supposed bad luck, since it is always either something or nothing, and that is how we compensate. Do not walk under a ladder or eat any shellfish if there is no, “r” in the month. Throw salt over your shoulder if you ever spill any of it and an apple a day keeps the Doctor away. Spend your life hoping that a black cat never crosses your path and do not open up an umbrella in the house. Airlines seldom have a row 13 for that matter and brides wear a blue garter as, “ something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue! “ Washed cars bring rain and that’s a fact.

Are we a trigger for our own emotions? Do we act according to superstition for good reason? The good fact is that we are able to connect with energies, and that we can learn to use the information in many ways. Just remember the very next time that you say you never win on the lottery that you do have to buy a ticket first. Very often we bring on bad luck just by dealing with things in such a negative way....”I’ll never get the hang of this” “That train is always late!”

“Things will get worse before they get better!” The list can go on and on, but the sentiment basks in really low levels of expectation, and sometimes the slice of bread and jam does really land jam side upwards. If we suppose the negative then when the positive does come along and it doesn’t. bite us on the backside we can be pleasantly surprised.

Remember it is true that dogs bite those who are frightened of them and that the apple can fall far from the tree and it might just have a worm in it too....beware of windfalls. My Mother, as an actress, had a morbid fear of dead flowers and hurled blooms out in anticipation that they may wither and die before they were seen again. She thrived on being told to, “break a leg” and always spoke of that “Scottish Play” as well as never wearing blue on the stage or seeing three lit candles burning together. Where does it all come from? Why can’t you have peacock feathers indoors? Being told that you should break a leg rather then a simple wish of good luck was because initially in Elizabethan theatres money would be thrown by the audience onto the stage in appreciation of a good show and the actors knelt down to retrieve the coins thus breaking the line of the leg. as they did so. I must try that one the next time I am on stage!

There are no real qualifications needed by anyone who attends a Séance, except possibly a love of Spirit, a belief that communication is possible, the enthusiasm to take part and witness, and no fear. This is no tall order and I have happily hosted many a Parlour Seance It may not be the spooky Hollywood version with the curtains billowing from side to side, intermittent thunder and lightening and flickering candles; but the taking part needs no experience whatsoever. Every Séance is an experiment between the living and the dead and I would be happy to list you for a future Séance and will send you a few tips to prepare you. Looking forward to working with you!

I worry that a separation would have a damaging affect. My eldest is now getting in to trouble, my 4 year old has always stuttered, and the 9 year old is having trouble making friends at school.

Choosing to stay in this toxic environment just because you fear you will all be financially poorer, isn’t love and it’s misguided sacrifice. If you live separately from your wife, everyone will adjust in time, and more importantly, they will be far better off having two happy parents living apart. Material things give short term happiness. Whereas family harmony can last forever, and is priceless.

Surprise!

I want to arrange a surprise party for my husband’s 40th birthday this year. He has lots of friends and work colleagues, and the guest list could run to hundreds of people. The problem is, he doesn’t like any fuss, and is quite conservative. I love attention and would like to do this for him, but his sister thinks he would hate it. I am wondering whether to just do it anyway.

You should know your husband after all these years, and if he isn’t an extravert, and his family think he might hate being the centre of attention, I would take heed and not arrange a big surprise party for him. You can still celebrate his birthday with a dinner party and make it a surprise, but just limit the number to a small group of family and close friends that he would be comfortable with.

Grimshaw is the Grim Speaker!

Music Notes Netflix have produced a documentary of Keith Richards that, from what I can glean, will show us exactly what life has truly been like rock´s ultimate ruffian. “To 99.9 per cent of people, its Keith Richards smoking a joint, a bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand, walking down the road, cursing the fact that the liquor store is closed,” he said “Image is like a ball and chain … when the sun goes down it doesn’t disappear.” The film is called ´Under the Influence. ´Don‘t miss it!

As reported Peep Show have filmed one more series, and last week saw the final wrap of the award winning show, and Mark and Jez, David Mitchell and Robert Webb, got quite weepie along with Matt King who plays Super Hans. Mitchell recently leaked a pic of Olivia Colman (Sophie) in the show also looking tearful after she wrapped her final scenes. Peep Show is expected to be broadcast on Channel 4 later this year. Hurrah!!

FRESHLY SQUEEZED went out on E4 in the UK in 2007 at 7am weekday mornings, and the five mix ´n match presenters were right up to speed on what was good or bad in video releases, all except one that is. His name: Nick Grimshaw. Three years ago, yer man got the Radio1 Breakfast show amid considerable ´Reallys? ´ ´Surely Nots!´ and other similar totally dismayed reactions.

One of the possible reasons behind these responses could well have come from how Nick was the butt of all the jokes at E4, the fall guy if you like, based mainly in his unfortunate ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time, and he´s only gone and proved that he still has this worrying affliction.

It’s been well documented that Nick and Harry Styles are bezzie mates, and it’s also well documented that One Direction are about to have a major break from the music business. On this serious tinderbox of a subject sadly Nick blurted out on Twitter “poor Harry Styles had been left ‘exhausted’ by One Direction,” and immediately the site went nuts sparking allegations that Styles was “sick ‘n’ tired of being in the band, and this is why the boys had decided to go on a year-long break.” What a toss-pot! The tweet was then linked out to MTV which in turn brought up countless “Uh-oh - Nick Grimshaw says Harry Styles is ‘exhausted” tweets … oh dear oh dear! Speaking to Guardian’s Weekend magazine Grimmers wriggled a lot saying “I was defending the boys’ decision to take a well-earned break, not blasting the band for tiring out his pal.” Too little too late foot ´n mouth boy!

Justin Bieber could well have turned the corner in his relationship with the media after saying on an Australian radio show, “I haven’t been in a relationship for a while now, I’m hanging out with myself, but I’m a relationship type of guy, I love to be in love, and I love cuddling, I love all that stuff, but I got my heart broken so I’m just trying to let that heal up.” Ahhh double bless!

Bryan Cranston (Walter White in hugely successful Breaking Bad), surprises all when asked what role he would like to return to “Right now it would be Malcolm In the Middle, it’d be fun to pick up that guy’s clothes again, be sweet and adorable and hapless and clueless and afraid of everything.” ´Scream Queens´ aired last Tuesday on Fox in America, and Jamie Lee Curtis will be playing a scary shower scene in Episode 15. Jamie, whose mother Janet Leigh was in that frightening shower scene in Psycho said “My entire life I´ve refused to step into the shower because it belongs to my mother, but this chance has suddenly appeared in my life, it’s unexpected and delightful! The time was finally right!” Excellent!

Tim Wannacott has charmed millions for 15 years with his weird and wonderful delivery as the presenter of Bargain Hunt. However, at the time of writing Tim and the producers were in the middle of a major fallout. “Tim said “I´m not doing Bargain Hunt at the moment for personal reasons.”

The furore is being likened to Clarkson´s Top Gear saga with the beeb saying “We don’t comment on individual staff matters.”

Be the Anniversary Guest of Honour Way back in 1976, Janet Philips, well known for her work with the English Library, became so tired of being starved of live theatre that she advertised a meeting to explore the idea of starting an amateur drama group.

by Patricia Thompson Only twelve people turned up but such was the enthusiasm of the twelve that only four months later, in May 1976, the Javea Players took to the stage at the Javea Secondary School with the double-bill, Murder by Request and Meet The Family.

So, next year the longest established drama group on the Costa Blanca will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary and they would like you to be their guest of honour.

Of course, there is a price to pay. To be, with a partner, their guests of honour at all

Javea Players’ shows and events throughout their anniversary year you have to design for them their 40th Anniversary logo.

Finished artwork is not required to enter this competition, just a colour design sketch, which should be emailed to king.bernardo@gmail.com to arrive not later than October 16, is all that is required. Well-known and highly regarded theatre journalists, Benny Davis and Jack Troughton will be helping the Chairman of Javea Players, Mike Harvey choose the

winning design.

As they reach their 40th anniversary, the Players can look back on thirty-nine years of hugely rewarding achievement.

They have succeeded in staging numerous ambitious productions to very considerable local acclaim. These have included Oh What a Lovely War, Toad of Toad Hall, Fiddler on the Roof, Lock-up Your Daughters, the European premiers of Below Stairs and Alan Bennett’s adaptation of The Wind in the Willows, Amadeus, The Dresser and The 39

Steps. They have grown from camping out in a near derelict Casa de la Falange and a nearer derelict cinema to making a home for themselves at the Union Musical, Gata and having a very well equipped Studio Theatre. of their own in Javea’s Old Town. They feel that they have a lot to celebrate and want you to celebrate with them – just design them that 40th Anniversary logo they are looking for and r ember to email it to king.bernardo@gmail.com to arrive no later than Friday 16th October.

Automatic translation HI AUNTY. I have a problem with my emails recently. All was fine until a few weeks ago, when I had to send an email in Spanish. I went on google translate, had my message in English, translated this to Spanish, copied and pasted the Spanish translation onto email, and sent. Since then, whenever I try to write an email, it either deletes part of sentence (when I don’t want it to), transfers lower case letters to capitals (again when I don’t want it to), or, jumbles the words up as if speaking Spanish, although keeping wording in English (changing sentence around, putting them in the wrong order).

Many thanks in advance. David Aunty says: Looking at the screen shot you sent, the problem that you have got is that you have turned on automatic translate on your internet browser.

So everything you type the browser is trying to translate it - which is why things go missing and get misplaced.

Click on “options” or even “show original” and this should stop the browse from trying to translate and changing the words around.

Windows XP Problems

HELLO AUNTY, I have a pay as you go dongle which has worked ok with my XP computer until hotmail changed to outlook at the beginning of the month.

At first nothing except read my inbox, then after a week I was able to send pictures and email, now I have gone to do the same today and it will not let me - I have tried reply, new message and contact list and get the same message (which I will have to send you in minute). Can you help perhaps there is something I am missing along the way as I am not computer minded - just do what I know and that’s it. Sandy Aunty says: It looks like you are using Internet Explorer and Windows XP. Well XP is no longer supported, and neither is that version of Internet Explorer.

So many website will start to be unusable to you, as they use more modern software, which your browser cannot use.

Changing to another web browser like Chrome or Firefox, which will continue to support XP and be updated, should correct the issue you are having.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Reflexive verbs: Some basic uses I hope you’re all enjoying the heat of summer and having a relaxing time, but not so relaxing that you can’t dedicate a little bit of thought to Spanish reflexive verbs. Here is the verb we looked at last week, but this time I’ll put the main meanings in as well.

Me levanto – I get up Te levantas – you get up Se levanta - s/he gets up Nos levantamos – we get up Os levantáis – you get up (plu) Se levantan – they get up Before moving on to other examples I’ll just mention that although we are looking at these verbs in the present tense at the moment, they of course work in all tenses. From what we have studied so far we can say, for example: “Me he levantado” (I have got up), “nos levantábamos” (we used to get up), “se están levantando” (they are getting up). Some people find these changes

of person and tense rather hard to come to terms with, which is why I’ve mentioned them now so they don’t come as a shock later on. The fact is that the more you learn the more you can apply to previous knowledge to extend the range of things you can say.

Back to the present tense though, and let’s think about other things we do for, or to, ourselves which are therefore reflexive in Spanish. Morning is the time we prepare ourselves to face the outside world, and therefore is rich in reflexive verbs. First things first, before we get up, we usually wake up, although that might not always be the case.

First let’s look at the verb “to wake up” in its non-reflexive form. “To wake up” another person is “despertar”. To say that I wake up my children in the morning is: “Despierto a mis hijos por la mañana”. Let’s look at this sentence for a moment. The subject is “I”, which would be “yo”, but here we have missed it out. The verb is “despertar”

Now we notice something else – it is a root changing verb! Remember them?

Despertar is an E to IE verb, so the first person singular is “despierto” (and NOT desperto). The object of the verb is “mis hijos” (my children). They are the ones who receive the action of the verb. The word “a” is added in front of objects of verbs when they are people rather than things, “por la mañana” is the additional information that is tacked on to the end of the main part of the sentence.

However, before I wake my children up, I have to wake myself up. When I wake up on my own, rather than waking up someone else, this is expressed by a reflexive verb “despertarse”. Therefore “I wake up in the morning” is “Me despierto por la mañana”, or in full “Yo me despierto por la mañana”. The fact that I wake up with the aid of an alarm clock or a hungry cat is irrelevant here!

Torrevieja Triumph against meek Muro AFTER PICKING up just two points from a possible 15, the promising pre-season performances of CD Torrevieja have turned into more of a ‘what will we do next’ scenario rather than thoughts of fighting for promotion at the end of the season. On Sunday CD Torrevieja needed a win and they got it. How they got it will remain irrelevant, all that mattered was the three points. It was a curious game, with curious moments but Torrevieja are out of the relegation places and on their way up he league with a number of games against other top teams and promotion contenders out of the way.

There was also a change of shape, Torrevieja lining up with a back four and a midfield diamond. Martin was at the base and Carrasco playing at the tip in a formation that required a lot from Luis Carlos and Vicente at full back.

Muro were unimpressive from the first whistle, and Oscar will most likely not have an easier ninety minutes this season. From the first whistle, despite not playing superbly themselves, Torrevieja were clearly the better side and went ahead after just 9 minutes. Luis Carlos hit a channel ball in behind Muro, on to which raced Cesar. His cross was fumbled by the goalkeeper Edu Samblas and Lewis was gifted a tap-in from two yards. It was the young English striker’s first goal for the club and will hopefully give him a great lift. Lewis was in the action again 15 minutes later, racing on to a header from Burguillos. Edu Samblas charged out of his goal somewhat foolishly, and Lewis’ attempt to lift the ball

Five minutes later and Muro were punished further. Luis Carlos, always keen to get forward from left back, crossed and Carrasco arrived unmarked to tuck home his first goal of the season. The captain for the day was in fine form, and does look more dangerous when played in an advanced position.

Muro were in disarray, and their behaviour on the pitch became more frustrated. Niggly little fouls were coupled with some blatant foul play and the referee struggled to keep the game under control. The second half was scrappy, and Muro made their life even more

difficult when they were reduced to nine men.

However Torrevieja struggled to make the extra numbers count. Only in injury time did they force one final save, a close range header from Juanfran being tipped wide.

The result was more important than the performance. Next week brings a tougher challenge in Novelda, currently 6th but smarting from a 1-0 defeat at home to Crevillente. Torrevieja then face Crevillente at the Vicente Garcia on Sunday 4th October.”

Sucina Golf Society, Annual Captains Day Event, 15th September The annual event being held at the IRM course Saurines de la Torre, near Roldan, choosing a Match Play format. Although it was not as hot as the last two games, it was still quite warm and the course was in a great condition as usual. The Match Play format seemed to be very interesting for those players that haven’t played it before. On an individual basis, some very good scores were returned. In addition, they were raising funds for the 2015 Charity - Casa Cuna Sucina, and to make the event more interesting, they also had additional competitions which players could enter for a nominal price. On the day funds raised for the chosen charity totalled 163€ through various competitions. The Members & Guests being very generous. The Captains Team romping home with a 7-3 win! Well done everyone.

The nearest the pin prizes went to: Hole 6 Sharon Seed, Hole 10 Granham Platts & Hole 18 Ann Dyos. No winner on Hole 14. Following this event on Saturday, 19th September, they held our Captains Dinner/Dance. This was held at La Mario’s in Sucina. A fantastic evening and an auction was held which raised a further 140€ for the Charity.

THERE’S NO denying it, it’s a great design (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) that from a distance looks like a three-door but thanks to cleverly concealed rear door handles it is actually a five door.

It represents extremely good value for money, too.

It seems to appeal to all generations, too, from the young girl who cycles past and tells her dad how she likes it through to the middle aged man who simply stands and stares. And the gentleman of senior years I spot driving his in Weymouth…

Arguably the brown finish of the test vehicle lends itself to the design and my wife and I feel that cream leather upholstery would complement this particularly well. As it is the black cloth seats are comfortable even over a fairly long journey that we take from Hampshire to Dorset.

The raised ride height is always a welcome bonus for me because it gives greater command of the road. It also allows the driver to spot parking spaces that others do not in packed car parks. I find the 1.5 diesel unit pleasantly poky at speeds under 60mph with third gear being very receptive between 30mph and 60mph. Over that speed and it proves slower than expected and at times struggles to hold its own while in the outside lane of the motorway.

Hills slow it up a bit requiring a change down to fourth gear but it is only a 1.5 litre and a diesel and so overall it does a good job and with hard driving will return over 40mpg. The best recorded was around 47mpg. Perhaps surprisingly the Juke holds the road and feels like it’s on rails when cornering, meaning that it can be driven with gusto even round bends. Rather than simply being an attractive head-turner it is also pleasingly a ‘driver’s car’, helped by the fairly hard suspension.

The n-tec model tested also comes fitted with cruise control which is useful for motorway cruising.

Bear in mind that the test takes place just after the UK has been badly battered by storms and the Juke copes with the floods admirably. Just down the road from my parents in law there is an enormous flood that has previously shut the road but the Juke makes light work of it. Reversing the Juke is made easier by the camera display on the dashboard.
