Alfaz del Pi launches emergency services app THE TOWN of Alfaz del Pi has launched a new application (app) for mobile phones to connect to the emergency services.

by Jeanette Rice 112 Fress, the new app, has been created to improve the communications between the town’s residents and the emergency services and is supported by Microsoft technology.

This has made Alfaz del Pi one of the first towns in the area to offer such a service, which is free to users.

by Jeanette Rice IN THE past couple of weeks there have been two reports of attempted child abductions in the vicinity of Benidorm, and police are asking parents to be extra vigilant now that the schools have broken up for the summer.

The first incident, reported on 11th of June, occurred when the family of a 12 year old student from a school in La Cala reported to the police that two men and a woman had tried to kidnap her as she left her school.

The girl was able to tell the police that the gang were using a medium sized white van with sliding doors. She was given a medical examination and authorities confirmed that she had not suffered any physi-

cal injuries.

The second incident occurred only days later near the schools located in the Foietes area of Benidorm, also just as school had finished.

The family of a 13 year old boy reported to the police that their son had been approached by a man and encouraged to leave with him.

On social media his parents posted that he was about ten minutes from the school when the incident happened and that he ran as soon as he realised all was not well.

Police reported that this second incident also involved two men and a woman with a similar vehicle and that they believe the two cases may be linked.

Bernabe Cano presents the gifts

BERNABÉ CANO, mayor of La Nucia, met with the family of a house fire on Wednesday to present them with gifts from the town.

The family, whose house caught fire on 7th June, lost nearly all their belongings and the impact of this fell heavily on the children of the household.

Paula Perales, the 10 year old daughter, had been due to go to summer camp with the La Nucia Scout Group but unfortunately all her camping equipment and clothing perished in the fire, and it looked like her trip would have to be cancelled.

Bernabé Cano presented Paula with camping equipment, footwear and clothing, a gift from the town of La Nuica, and she is now able to go on the summer camp with her friends on the 18th July to Castellon.

As reported in RTN two weeks ago, the family house caught fire at around 9.45am on the Sunday morning in the town of La Nucia.

The parents and their four children were lucky to escape with their lives thanks to the quick thinking of some of the neighbours, although the 15 year old daughter suffered second degree burns from helping her father try to extinguish the fire.

THE MINISTRY for the Interior has promised Benidorm authorities that they will have 20-25 additional national police officers for the summer.

In addition to the 10 extra local police that have already started in Benidorm, the town will greatly benefit from this announcement, which has been welcomed by Toni Perez, mayor for Benidorm.

The extra officers will be in place for the summer months of July and August, and is double the amount that the town received last year.

Juan Carlos Valderrama, the government delegate in Valencia, said “we are committed to strengthening the staff of the national police in Benidorm for the two main summer months”.

Last year the town gained 10 additional officers but for only the month of August, and none in the previous year, 2013, even though the population of Benidorm quadruples during the summer.

It is hoped that with the increased law enforcement visitors to Benidorm will feel more secure, the extra beach patrols and vehicles on the streets presenting a high visibility campaign over the summer.

Woman caught with liquid cocaine in her breast implants ON SATURDAY a woman travelling from Colombia to Barcelona was arrested attempting to smuggle cocaine in Spain.

The implants had been filled with 3.3lbs of liquid cocaine.

by Jeanette Rice PAOLA DEYANIRA Sabillon, aged 22, was en route to Barcelona, Spain when customs officers at the Bogota airport in Colombia stopped her for further checks.

Diego Rosero, the airport police colonel, said “officers noticed her looking obviously nervous whilst she stood in the secuirty line, and decided to detain her for further questioning�.

Ms Sabillon, from Honduras, was then taken to the x-ray machine where the officers could clearly see the breast implants had been tampered with. In fact, they had been filled with 3.3lbs of liquid cocaine.

Ms Sabillon told the officers that although she had recently undergone breast surgery she had taken instructions to deliver the contents in Barcelona without knowing what she was carrying.

Although under arrest, she was taken to Bogota hospital to have the implants removed and was admitted for treatment due to an infection resulting from the surgery.

The procedure had been carried out in a back street clinic in Pereira, western Colombia, and clearly not to the hygienic standards that would normally accompany such an operation.

Colombia produces around 300 tonnes of the class A drug each year, with the smugglers seeking new ways to try and dupe the authorities with their human mules.

Birth rate rises in Spain for the first time in five years

FIGURES JUST released show that for the first time in five years the birth rate has risen in Spain.

With a total of 426,303 babies being born in Spain last year, 588 more than the previous year, the National Statistics Institute published that this amounted to a rise of 0.1%.

Of the total births 17.8% were non-Spanish mothers, a drop from the previous years 18.6%.

The study of Natural Population Movement, which was released on Monday also stated that for the first time in history, life expectancy of those born here in the country was 83 years.

New trafďŹ c controls at Alicante-Elche airport

by Jeanette Rice ALICANTE AIRPORT is currently installing new barriers for the parking area in departures. Amidst complaints from the Elche taxi drivers that illegal taxis are still operating at the airport and that some of the legal taxis are not operating by the same rules, the airport authorities are now installing barriers to allow the monitoring of vehicles passing through the terminal parking.

Last year a new regulation came into force where taxis from outside of the Elche area such as Torrevieja, Cartagena and Murcia could only have 6 fares per month to or from the airport. However, as the Guardia Civil no longer have control of policing the parking area, the local police from Elche are now responsible for handling complaints and many seem to be caught up in the usual red tape.

The official taxi drivers have continued with their claims that even though there are automatic licence plate readers, these only

control the area where taxis are supposed to pick up passengers and not the area on the 2nd floor, departures, or in the lower floor where the parking is situated.

The new barriers, which are currently being installed, will be controlled with cameras and automatically record the licence plate of any vehicle. Drivers will collect a ticket at the barrier and be allowed 15 minutes free to either drop off or collect their passengers.

Should a vehicle be recorded as staying longer than this time, upon exit, they will be required to pay an additional amount.

Airport authorities state that the need for the barriers is to offer a better service for those wishing to pick up or collect passengers, encouraging drivers to only park in the area for a shorter period of time so that others can also benefit from the spaces.

It is anticipated that the new barriers will be fully operational in July.

Hoax phone call forces plane to make emergency landing A RYANAIR flight, travelling from Oslo to Warsaw yesterday morning, Thursday, was forced to make an emergency landing after authorities received what they believed to be a hoax call saying that explosives were on board.

The plane landed safely and all the passengers disembarked, shaken but unharmed, and at the time of going to press explosive experts had began their search of the plane.

Missing woman found safe

JOCELYNE CARCOUET, who was reported missing last week, has been found safe and well and has already been in contact with her relatives in Altea and France to assure them that she is fine.

Francisco Rojo, spokesperson for the Fress Foundation said “Fress 112 allows the services to know the location of the incident immediately as the touch of one button sends the coordination centre the geo localisation, which improves the speed at which the emergency services can response, particularly as some callers can be confused with their exact whereabouts”.

The app has four options - the traditional voice channel for direct conversation, sending pictures, sending videos in real time and finally the ability to keep a written emergency centre conversation record.

In addition, the app allows the user to set a profile containing personal data which can included any relevant medical information that may be forgotten at the time of the emergency.

Vicente Arques, mayor for Alfaz del Pi said “this is a project that fits perfectly for our town where neighbours are often of different nationalities, the benefit that this service can offer for better communications between citizens and emergency services, particularly where 30% of the population is over 60 years old is tremendous”.

The new emergency app is available to any phone that runs on Android and iOS (Apple) systems and will be available for Blackberry and Windows phones.

Man dies falling from plane ONE MAN has died, and another is fighting for his life in a London hospital after stowing away on a flight from South Africa.

by Jeanette Rice THE MAN died, following an 8,000 mile flight from Johannesburg, South Africa to London’s Heathrow airport, when he fell from the plane and landed on a busy high street shop. He was found with his feet sticking out of an air conditioning unit by emergency services.

It is believed, although not yet confirmed, that the man had hidden in the wheel well area of the Boeing 747.

David Learmount, a consulting editor of Flight International magazine said “the conditions at 35,000 feet meant that it would be highly unlikely for anyone to have survived, with temperatures getting to minus 50 degrees and the lack of oxygen, you are either going to be frozen or unable to breath”.

Experts believe that the man fell to his death when the plane lowered its undercarriage in preparation for the landing.

The other man, aged 24, who at the time of going to press was still fighting for his life in hospital with multiple injuries, is believed to have managed to have somehow got inside the plane in order to have survived the journey, with some aviation experts suggesting that maybe his body had gone into a state of hibernation.

An investigation is under way as to how the two men avoided security in Johannesburg and were able to get so close to the plane, whilst the Metropolitan Police have stated that they were still investigating if the two men were stowaways on the same flight.

An inquest into the death of the young man from Mozambique heard that medical reports showed it was more than likely that he had survived for most of the 12 hour flight.

Caver trapped overnight as emergency teams battle to free him

IT TOOK 40 specialist emergency crew to free an injured caver at the weekend in Catalonia.

The 45 year old man was with his friends in the Cuberes cave in Catalonia when he fell approximately 20ft into a crevice, which was a three hour walk from the cave entrance.

Unable to reach him his four friends called the emergency services who attended the scene but could not immediately free the man.

After hours of the specialist team, including 19 special rescue workers, a doctor, nurse, underground cavers from the Catalan Speleology Federation and 12 police officers managed to free the man and used special tools to chip away at sections of the cave to make it wide enough for a stretcher to fit through.

The injured man was evacuated by helicopter to Lleida hospital where he was reported to have back injuries.

New vocational training centre to open in Alfaz del Pi Alfaz mayor meets with APSA

by Jeanette Rice ON MONDAY the mayor of Alfaz del Pi, Vicente Arques announced a new training centre for people with learning disabilities.

In association with APSA the mayor explained the final details of the centre, which will open in October of this year.

The aim of the centre is to help those that struggle with mainstream education and training and will provide young people with the opportunity to gain qualifications in administration, gardening, tourism and child care.

Mayte Garcia, head of finance for Alfaz del Pi town, said “we have been working on this project for more than one year, wanting a regional centre that could help young people with disabilities seek employment�.

The centre plans to give assistance to between 12 and 15 young people in the area, with only two other centres in the region, one in Alicante and the other in Elche, the authorities in Alfaz del Pi hope that the new centre will become a beacon for many similar centres.

The centre will also help the young people deal with the day to day life necessities, helping them become more independent and able to cope with life and the work environment.

APSA is a non profit organisation that has, for over 50 years, sought to improve the quality of life of those with disabilities. The organisation has worked closely with Alfaz del Pi town hall since 2010 to help provide social and work integration in a safe and pleasant environment.

Benidorm mayor defends World Heritage Site claim to BBC

ON MONDAY the mayor of Benidorm gave an interview with the BBC defending the claim that the town should be granted the title of a World Heritage Site.

Sitting on the balcony of the Torrejo building looking down onto the Levante beach Toni Perez, mayor of Benidorm, told the BBC presenter Ade Adepitan, from “The Travel Show” that he firmly believed Benidorm should be awarded the title by UNESCO. Passionate about Benidorm Mr Perez explained to Ade Adepitan that the town was nestled in a natural setting which highlighted its beaches, climate, shoreline and was an urban model that had triumphed as one of the

most sustainable.

Toni Perez said that “Benidorm is an example of the welfare state, it has become a holiday destination for all people from all walks of life, and that is why we cannot compete with others that are World Heritage by historic value, but for being a human city”.

The BBC’s “The Travel Show” were visiting Benidorm for two days of filming, the popular television programme will be airing two shows on the town. One show will be dedicated to the high residential tourism on the Costa Blanca and the other will focus purely on the aspirations of Benidorm to achieve the UNESCO World Heritage Site

accolade.

When the programme is aired viewers will be able to see the beautiful beaches and surroundings, in particular the filming crew recorded the Paseo de Levante, Mirador del Castillo and Elche Park as well as visiting many of the restaurants and bars in the Old Town area.

A World Heritage Site can be a place (such as a building, city, desert, forest, monument or mountain) that is listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as being of special cultural or physical significance, and as of May 2015 1007 sites were listed. 779 cultural, 197 natural and 31 mixed.

International Press Institute members fear for freedom of the press JOURNALISTS IN Spain have spoken out about their fear for the future of the freedom of the press in the country.

by Jeanette Rice THE INTERNATIONAL Press Institute (IPI) members have begun to express their concerns publicly about their fears of a clamp down on the freedom of expression ahead of the national elections in November of this year.

A report out in this months edition of IPI written by Stephen Whittle argues that the freedom of expression, which has been in place since the end of Franco’s dictatorship, is under threat.

The report detailed five factors that were felt to be infringements on this freedom and that the journalist felt impelled to speak out about.

Of these five factors the group of journalist point to the politicisation of RTVE, Spain’s public broadcaster. Six new broadcasting licences are going to be granted by the government rather than an independent broadcasting regulator. This is due to a new public security law which will come into effect next week.

The report also points out that the new chairman of RTVE had publicly boasted of his support for the PP party, and when the issue was raised in parliament the spokesperson for the PP stated that the appointment had been necessary as RTVE’s reporting had previously been anti government.

The new law will fine those taking “unauthorised images” of the police and security forces, change the way in which institutional advertising is allocated and will also put a private pressure on media owners and editors to comply with the general consensus.

demics, Mr Whittle discusses in the report that the four political parties are all fighting to win power, and as each party holds about 20% of support in the polls the first casualty in such a war would be the truth.

The president of PDLI, Virginia Perez Alonso, said that “Spain’s economic crisis and claims about terrorist threats are being used as a smokescreen to introduce reforms that would restrict press freedom”.

Ms Alonso went on to say that “many of the reforms have a common denominator, to reduce methods of sharing information, putting barriers on the internet, a space of free ex-

pression, and penalising new forms of protest”.

The PDLI stated that the new public security law, which they are calling the “gag law” has already been criticised by the United Nations human rights delegates.

The IPI delegation, along with representatives from the European Federation of Journalists and the Committee to Protect Journalists met with political parties in Madrid over a period of three days to plead for the benefits of accurate and impartial political media coverage.

Benidorm - Not A Relaxing Time!

I HAVE just returned from a ten-day holiday in Benidorm, where I had hoped to get some rest and relaxation on the beach. No chance! For a start the price of the sun-beds and parasols is exorbitant .With two of us the daily cost of a day on the beach is 13.50€, making a total of 135€ for the10 days.

We could have had an extra flight for that price! Once on the beach you pay an attendant and then, just as you are about to relax, a ticket inspector hovers over you until you wake up( if you are lucky to be sleeping) so as to punch your ticket. Then you discover the powers that be have decided that frontline sun-beds have to be facing south at all times.

Even though the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the sun-beds must not follow the sun. This is bureaucracy gone mad!

Next thing, the peace is shattered by the loud screams of illegal sellers of everything from mojitos, sangria, sunglasses, beach dresses, to lollies and even massages.

Benidorm could learn a thing or two from Fuengirola, where each restaurant is in charge of their own little stretch of beach, sells their own drinks and snacks and even provides toilet facilities, something which Benidorm’s beach totally lacks. Benidorm Council needs to get their act together as this treatment will cause people to boycott the beach and stay around their respective pools.

This was definitely not the relaxing holiday I had anticipated.

Rule breakers

IN REPLY to Toms letter last week, I was intrigued by Toms tales of the felonious goings on at the Finestrat pool and I agree. It is indeed discouraging to see people do what they shouldn’t do and not do what they should.

What a pickle we’d be in if all of society did that. Rules are rules for a reason.

Dalai Lama XIV may have said “Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively”, but when was the last time you saw him at the Finestrat swimming pool?

However, now I’m beguiled: What were these rules that these “transgressors” were breaking, and who made them?

Were they noisy, naked, smoking, plot-

ting, cooking, dancing, praying, murdering, organising a meeting of more than 5 people, feeding their dog, coveting, chanting, displaying avarice, singing, running wildly or maybe blaspheming? We need to know! In addition, for showing disapprobation to an elderly president, I’d throw the book at them (assuming book throwing is indeed allowed according to the list on the gate).

This story has legs. You’ve whetted our appetite. We need more details. I shall eagerly scan next week’s RTN to get the full story. Rule breakers eh? Makes you ashamed to be British!

An act of kindness

I WOULD be grateful if you would allow me to use your “readers’ letters” page to acknowledge an act of kindness and honesty. Last Tuesday, 16th June, I lost my wallet in the Boulevard. It contained all my bank cards, driving license, health cards, etc. and a small amount of money. However, it was found by some kind soul and handed in to security personnel and I was able to collect from the Boulevard Information Desk the following day. The contents of the wallet were fully intact; the money was of little importance but words cannot describe my relief at getting the other items back.

The finder did not leave a name and address and this is the only way I can thank him or her for this considerable act of kindness and honesty. I would also like to thank the staff at the Boulevard for their help in this matter.

Thank you for the opportunity for me to use your paper to express my appreciation to everyone involved.

Sleepy town changes their “kill Jews” name A TOWN near Burgos called Castrillo Matajudios (translated into English meaning “kill Jews”) has legally changed its name.

by Jeanette Rice THE TOWN will now be called Castrillo Mota de Judíos meaning “Hill of Jews” and the official state bulletin now reflects this change. Historians are still debating when exactly the “Kill Jews” name was first widely known for the town, some saying it dates back to 1627 when anti-Semitism was high during the Spanish Inquisition between 1478 and 1834, whilst others believes it goes back as far as 1492 when a royal order was put in place banishing Jews from Spanish lands if they did not convert to Catholicism.

Prior to this the town was believed to have been called Mota de Judíos, in reference to the Jewish pioneers who settled there. The town’s 56 residents voted on the name change with the full support of the mayor and are reported to be excited about the future with a new outlook towards their town, although the practicalities of changing all relevant deeds and documents may take some time.

The Board which agreed the name change said that the aim was “to recognise the Jewish origin of the town, and remove the racist implications that the town had endured with the previous name”. It is hoped that by September all the new signs will be in place.

Mercadona to create 4,000 new jobs

THE SPANISH supermarket chain, Mercadona, has announced that they will been seeking 4,000 new employees.

The Valencian registered company has 1,536 stores throughout Spain and is looking to employ the additional staff mainly to cover the summer period where the stores experience a sudden influx of tourists particularly in the coastal areas.

The jobs will be offered on temporary contracts running from June to September and will pay a net monthly salary of €1,100.

Finestrat launches a summer cleaning team THE TOWN of Finestrat gears up for summer with a special cleaning team.

by Jeanette Rice THE DEPARTMENT of Work and Technical Services for Finestrat has announced that they have put into place a new cleaning team to ensure that the town and surrounding areas are presented in their best light.

The new cleaning teams started on Tuesday, in preparation for the night of San Juan, and will operate from Monday to Sunday in the evenings until September.

“The usual street cleaning and waste disposal will continue, but the additional support for the peak season is imperative”, said Thomas Selles, mayor for Finestrat. He went on to say “we have been concerned about the cleanliness of the town and know that in the summer there is a need to redouble our efforts, this reinforcement schedule will ensure that all visitors leave with a positive impression”.

Toni Perez, mayor of Benidorm, said “the lights have deteriorated and are all different colours, it is time to make the entire network the same and unified”.

San Juan celebrations go through the night Thousands celebrated on the beaches for San Juan

by Jeanette Rice TUESDAY EVENING saw the Costa Blanca beaches packed with thousands celebrating “Nit de Sant Joan”.

Across the region many families began gathering on the beaches late afternoon to take advantage of getting a good spot as well as the entertainment that most of the coastal towns were providing.

Finestrat celebrated at the La Cala beach with entertainment to keep the masses occupied. There was a Zumba dancing workshop during the afternoon and then through the evening DJ’s played music from the stage area erected at the entrance of the beach.

In Albir the crowds were entertained by a Norwegian band and choir as a special bar served drinks and snacks for those who

hadn’t taken their own, which proved popular as everything was priced for those on a budget.

The traditional bonfire was permitted this year, despite the current high risk alert that the area is on but was suitably supervised by the fire department.

Villajoyosa saw hundreds of people gather on the beach area as onlookers watched children throwing wreaths into the sea to honour those that had died in the waters. The town hall organised various activities to keep even the smallest child occupied.

In Benidorm thousands gathered on the beaches and around the Elche park area from late afternoon, soon filling up any vacant spaces on the sand.

The extra police taken on for the summer in Benidorm were patrolling the beach areas to ensure that public safety was a priority and the authorities had made arrangements for the lifeguards to remain on duty to ensure that those wishing to swim in the sea throughout the evening and into the early hours of the morning were able to do so. Only at 3 am did the security teams begin requesting visitors to leave so that the clean up could start.

Every beach saw families, complete with picnic tables, chairs, and cool boxes taking advantage of the evening to have a family gathering and meal together, whilst the chil-

dren played in the sea on what was a lovely warm night.

When midnight arrived many gathered along the shoreline and performed the ritual of walking backwards into the sea, believing that it will give then a fresh start for the future.

Earlier in the day there had been concerns about a weather front heading towards the coast which, in inland areas, had been producing storm like winds. Although through the afternoon the coast was mainly cloudy the weather did not disrupt the celebrations for the thousands of visitors.

International Gay Pride Day this weekend AROUND THE world this weekend there will be celebrations and parties to mark International Gay Pride Day, 28th June.

Bars and other venues will be flying their rainbow flags with extra pride and although the town of Benidorm does not hold their annual gay pride event until September there is no doubt that the local businesses will celebrate this weekend also.

Madrid Pride Parade, know as “Orgullo Gay� is always held on the first Saturday after June 28th. The event, organised by COGAM (Madrid GLTB Collective) and FELGTB (Spanish Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals) and supported by other national and international LGTB groups.

The first gay parade in Madrid was held after the death of Franco and is now the biggest pride event in Europe with more than 1.5 million attending.

Other European cities holding a similar event are Paris, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Vienna, Amsterdam and the list goes on.

Emiliano Casal still number one EMILIANO CASAL, Spain’s three time undefeated lightweight boxing champion is preparing himself for an assault on the European Belt later in 2015 or early 2016.

by Jack Troughton THE TEAMS of both boxers are presently in negotiations, primarily over were the fight will be in Torrevieja or Belgium, with the winner moving up to a whole new level of completion and being eligible for a World Title fight. Emiliano said; “We are presently in negotiation over where and when we shall fight for the European belt. It will take me about three months to reach my Lightweight weight and be in fighting shape.”

In the meantime, Emiliano has been keeping himself very busy. His wife is expecting their second child, he has been appearing in two local films, making appearances at local prize giving ceremonies, running two taxis and has still found the time to help design and open a brand new beach restaurant, Velero. On the acting front, Emiliano has been working on the good side of the law with Siesta Productions ‘The Cucarcha Club’, and a nastier piece of work as a mafia gang boss, in Bill Little’s ‘Trained to Kill’ with offers to appear in both films follow up, should they happen. Bill Little has also earmarked a part for Emiliano in his new film, ‘Realm of Darkness’, which should start production on the Costa Blanca this Autumn. Although he is first a boxer and will continue boxing until he retires from the ring, reviews of his work as an actor have been very positive and so possibly yet another career will open it’s doors for Emiliano in the mid 2020’s, after boxing, as a thespian.

Apart from his family, Emiliano’s new pride and joy is his family restaurant that he opened last month called; Velero.

something a little different. Emiliano added; “My wife and I wanted to offer something just a little different for the people of and visitors to, Torrevieja. During the Bonfire celebrations this week, Velero was packed, with the new ‘chill out’ zone proving to be extremely

popular. Emiliano believes in the hands on approach, is there most evenings to meet and greet everyone and to ensure the service visitors receive is first class. Being a first class act himself, Emiliano is also very approachable and speaks fluent Spanish, English and Norwegian, plus has a working knowledge of a number of other languages. So feel free to say hello if you are passing before he goes into training mode for his European Belt bout after the summer season.

Benidorm Series 8 celebrates “its a wrap”

by Jeanette Rice THIS WEEK the Benidorm television programme finished filming series 8 and celebrated in their usual style by hosting a wrap party for cast and crew, before they all have to pack their bags and return to their other jobs and projects, with Derren Litten, writer of the programme, tweeting pictures of the amazing chocolate fountain that they were all dipping into at their themed dress in white wrap party.

You may still see the odd member of the cast around Benidorm and Albir as they enjoy a few days off before returning to the UK, and some will be back throughout the year to perform some promotional activity.

Members of the public who have supported the programme when visiting Benidorm, have waited patiently to see their favourite characters outside places such as Morgans (Neptunes Bar), The Sol Pelicanos (The pool area for Solana) and the Pink House (Solana Reception), and their patience was often rewarded with the actors taking time from their busy schedule to sign autographs or have pictures taken.

The eager fans will have noticed that there are some surprises in store, with the return of some characters as well as new cast members who will soon become familiar to them when the programme is aired at the beginning of next year.

Combined with some very special guests series 8 promises to be as good, if not better, than the previous 7.

By Irena Bodnarec THE BBC Travel Show team were in Benidorm at the beginning of the week, filming for a forthcoming programme due to be aired on BBC 1 and BBC World - which is broadcast to over 200 countries. On Sunday the team spent the day with Benidorm´s best loved drag queen – Miss Jordan Rivers, aka Gary Brown from the Rich Bitch Show Bar. Paralympian athlete Ade Adepitan is presenting the show and surprised customers at Sunday evening’s performance by introducing Miss Jordan River and Miss Shape onto the stage. Producer Greg McKenzie and the film crew spent the day with Gary and chose the Rich Bitch in the Old Town as it is one of the town’s longest standing bars – now in its 17th year. Look out for the episode, which is due to be broadcast within the next couple of weeks.

It’s not just a wine named after Benidorm, now there is a beer BENIDORM IS fast becoming the name that everyone wants to be associated with, and now the town has a beer named after it.

by Jeanette Rice BBB – BLUE Beer Benidorm was an idea formed six months ago by two entrepreneurs, Marc Agliata and Juan Carlos. Both were already involved in the industry when they came together and agreed to join forces on what they describe as “a fun and quality project”.

The beer, which has a citrus taste, is currently produced using two breweries in Valencia but there are already plans to bring production to Benidorm. The new beer gained its name from what the creators called the three B’s. “Benidorm” is a town of friendly people, the sky is “blue” and the sea is “blue”, so the beer honours all of these things.

The new beer was recently presented in Madrid at the Salon de Gourmets Ifema alongside premium liquors and other beers.

Iceland celebrates

By Irena Bodnarec ICELAND SUPERMARKET in Benidorm celebrated its first anniversary on Wednesday since moving to the current location in the Rincon de Loix – previously they were opposite Carrefour. To mark the occasion they offered customers a free bbq tasting of their products, which was cooked outside the store and all staff were dressed up for the Hawaiian themed day. They also held a raffle, with the opportunity to win a hamper full of Iceland goodies – the winning ticket number was 336. All proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to MABS and over €200 was raised. Maria Killer, a volunteer from the MABS support centre in La Cala was there along with Winnie the Pooh and Peppa Pig, who were giving out balloons and sweets to the children.

AFTER A hectic few months of casting, rehearsing, building sets and selling tickets, it all worked out worthwhile for Studio 32, who delighted their audience, with three sell out performances of Oklahoma.

by Keith Nicol THE LEAD roles of Curly and Laurey were accomplishedly portrayed by Rae Daniel and Verity Jo Spencer Hall with exceptional supporting roles from Jenni Hardy –Rooney as the feisty Aunt Eller, the flirtatious Ado Annie played by Bev McEwan, along with the talented Mark Lord as Will Parker. The casting was even more of a surprise when one realises that it was the first time for Rae and Verity to take lead roles in a musical, along with many other members of the talented cast.

Special credit also goes to the gifted Mike Oates, who played peddler Ali Hakim and to Dan Ullah, who played the mysterious and sinister Jud Fry. The lead actors were well supported by a host of dancing girls, cowboys, farmers wives and girlfriends, all of whom added their personal touch to make this a truly authentic and fantastic show. Oklahoma was produced and directed by Susan Zillah Wilson, backed by a dedicated back stage crew and Studio 32 members.

Having just got their breath back and after their end of show dinner, the group are already planning their next production, the popular Pantomime Dick Whittington. This will be staged once again in the Cardinal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio and be one of the first pantos of the winter season, taking place in November. They are both hoping for another sell out show, as it’s anticipated that another large donation will be made to local charities to add to the 2,000€ presented this time, to the Alzheimer’s Association and San Fulgencio town hall.

The society are just two years old and always on the lookout for new talent, of any age, sex or nationality. If you are interested in becoming a member of Studio 32 in any capacity, just stop by one of their rehearsals at Casa Ventura, San Luis, Torrevieja on Wednesday 17th June between 4pm and 6pm.

Broadway Performance Academy 60’s show huge success

by Jeanette Rice THE CASA de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi went back to the sixties on Saturday night with a show for all the family in aid of EMAUS. The performance, written and directed by Matt King, was an opportunity for the audience, young and old, to see how life has changed over the past 50 years.

Opening with a sketch of a typical working family the evening revisited the family throughout, showing how times changed and technologies such as colour televisions were introduced into households.

The audience were treated to tap dancing, “Sonny and

Cher”, “Ike and Tina Turner” as well as a young “Elvis” (performed by Kieron Wilkinson).

The upcoming group, for the era, “The Beetles” featured with the cast singing “imagine” and “yellow submarine”.

During the show there was a fitting tribute to Ron Moody, who played Fagin in the 1968 film Oliver, and who died earlier this month, with Tia Pickering singing “as long as he needs me” followed by the cast singing the ever popular “consider yourself”.

Throughout the show the audience clapped with the music

and laughed at the sketches, many, no doubt, remembering how hula hoops, roller skating, mods, and teddy suits were cutting edge.

The choreography, by Rebecca Troch, Alison Eaves and Chloe Troch was performed by the cast with much enthusiasm, with even the very young being included.

At the end of the show Matt King said “this has been an education for most of the Broadway members who discovered that in the 60’s it was a case of entertain yourselves, respecting your elders and that no, they did not have mobile phones!!”

How to get a Spanish Criminal Record Certificate in Spain DEAR LAWYERS, I am a teacher moving back to my home country.

I am currently finalising preparations for my move for the next school year.

I have been told that I will need, among other requirements, a certificate of my criminal record in Spain. Is this correct and if so can you can help with the paperwork?

CERTAIN JOBS and / or activities require a certificate attesting that one does not have a criminal record, particularly those jobs related to the health sector, teaching and caring for children, elderly, etc.

In order to be able to get such a certificate you should be registered officially in your country of origin or the country where you have lived in, which in your case is Spain, and they are the country that could grant this kind of certificate.

In Spain you can apply for a criminal record Certificate from the Regional Offices of the Ministry of Justice of the corresponding Autonomous Community.

The application could be made either by yourself in person, or you can appoint an authorized

representative, who will be able to act on your behalf.

If you apply personally, it would be necessary to present the following documentation: Original identity document in force like ID card, passport, etc. It is very convenient if you are a foreigner to provide your NIE. Form number 790 completed, and proof of the payment of the application fees.

You can ask someone to represent you and apply for it on your behalf, in which case the following would be needed: Power of Attorney (POA) granted by you in favor of the person who will represent you before the competent authority. It is essential to note that if the POA is granted abroad, it must be duly Apostilled to

be valid in Spain.

Original or certified copy of the identity document in force of you and your representative.

You should know that the Spanish authorities will seek information about your criminal records in your home country before issuing a certificate of criminal record in Spain, and also, the Spanish Criminal Record Certificate must be duly apostilled, to be valid in your country.

What happened to the bees in your garden by

INCREASINGLY READERS are noticing that year by year there are less and less bees around.

NOT JUST of the common honey bees that live in colonies of 50,000 plus worker bees but also the rarer species of bumble bees that build up colonies of just 100-200 bees and the large black wild digger bees that live in small colonies of just ten or 20 and bury into the ground to make their natural hives. Unfortunately the problem is not confined to Spain.

Moving hundreds of hives from one orchard are to another according to the pollinating seasons has become a major business in the US. Close to home our local honey farmer moved his hives from various parts of our Costa Blanca valley to Leon to rebuild his bee colonies in a healthier environment and obtain greater yields of honey.

Doing some research indicates that there are several causes of the serious decline in bee populations .

40% of Spain’s 700,000 million bees are thought to have died as a result of a mysterious disease during the period 2004 and 2005. The deaths were 70% in some regions but apparently only 10% in some northerly regions.

The March 2005 big freeze killed some active bees and in some areas decimated that years blossom season on fruit trees and seriously damaged and even killed off many old fruit orchards, including citrus plantations.

The aerial spraying of fruit trees and in some areas gardens as well.

An increase of spraying in the countryside around and

between villages and towns as fruit and vegetable growers upped their spraying with insecticides and fungicides as abandoned trees and piles of fallen fruit stimulated an increase in unwanted insects and fungi spores.

The increased use of insecticides ,fungicides and weed killers in industrial vegetable growing and animal rearing.

An increase of spraying in gardens especially where large new urbanisations were allowed to be built on agricultural land previously used to grow fruit and vegetables.

The removal of old mixed hedgerows, which included wild plum, sloe, hawthorn, and wild rose trees which attracted and sustained pollinators, including bees.

Exposure to aluminium from the pollen of flowers which naturally high in aluminium. This is thought to cause something approaching Alzheimer’s in bees which lose their ability to orientate and home in on hives.

Mountainside fires that destroyed acres of rosemary where hives were previously located.

A major reduction in the number of hives and beekeepers as the importation of low cost Chinese honey bites into the local market.

A reduction in the number of birds, bats and beneficial insects that used to control unwanted insects naturally.

The spraying to tackle new garden pests such as the geranium moth, a series of new citrus pests, new vegetable

pests attacking crops such as tomatoes and artichokes and of course the biggest current problem the palm weevil, plus the new weevil killing off agaves. Depending on the product used the fog created by treating palm trees with copious amounts of chemicals in water cannot be healthy for humans, pets, birds, butterflies and beneficial insects as well as bees.

Against that background it is unlikely that bee populations recover to the numbers of two decades ago and gardeners can expect to see far fewer if their neighbours continue to use chemical sprays on the first appearance of any bug and protect doomed palms with obnoxious chemical compounds rather than seeking out less harmful natural solutions.

Incidentally enormous sums have been quoted for the labour costs of hand pollination in the fruit and vegetable industries if bees died out completely. One quote for the US was 265 billion euros which would probably kill off large sections of the industries because of the extra costs.

Artist’s dream PHOTOGRAPHER JOSE Ferrer’s work mixing the past with ‘today’ is at the centre of July’s exhibition at the Artefactus gallery in Javea Old Town.

And also on show are works by film director Wolfgang Burmann, currently living in Brussels, and Dutch artist Marijke de Vries.

The Artefactus shop is also stocked with the jewellery by Viko, which incorporates glass with other materials such as silver, leather and fabrics.

The exhibition runs from Thursday 2nd July to Saturday 25th July.

Checkmate outdoors

THE FIRST Oriheula Costa outdoor chess tournament, organised by the DTOC will take place on Saturday 18th July from 10.00am to 8.00pm in La Zenia Park. Tis is the first ever outdoor chess tournament on the Orihuela Costa. Everyone is welcome and as an added attraction, there is free beer for all, while stocks last.

Continued from page 33 In March this year, Gala Bingo in the UK launched a special bingo game with the ultimate prize for the winners of a holiday in the resort of Benidorm combined with a meet and greet with some of the stars of the popular “Benidorm” programme. All players had to do was opt in at the beginning of their bingo game and each day a holiday for two would be awarded via a draw, 14 draws in total.

Last week the winners arrived in the resort to enjoy their prize and got the opportunity to meet and greet with Tim Healy who plays Lesley, Jake Canuso the charismatic waiter and Sherrie Hewson who plays Joyce Temple-Savage.

Elizabeth and John Reddy, from Preston, enjoyed meeting the cast and had quite a chat with Sherrie Hewson who is a Gala Bingo fan, Elizabeth, a Coronation Street fan was clearly enjoying every moment of this very special holiday.

Benidorm was chosen as the destination by Gala following a survey that they conducted of 1,000 of their members.

The survey revealed that 47% felt that Benidorm gave value for money and 26% said that the resort had been recommended by either a friend or a family member.

20% expressed that they had been influenced by the TV show although 4% said that they had been at least 6 times before, such was their love for the town. The survey also found that at least A picture by Jose Ferrer 23% who responded would love to live in Benidorm, the attraction being the weather and lifestyle, some of them even chose the resort over options such as New York, Las Vegas and Australia.

I AM often asked about magic, and particularly if it exists and why doesn’t it come along more often. Well, you see it has to be special to make it magic, and so it could never be anything but spontaneous, and therefore it is infrequent too. Sheer magic is often a reflection because we didn’t value it at the time. We take a look back on something that was rather wonderful at the time, but that in time has become very special, taking on a real touch of magic? This could be because nothing else better has happened to eclipse it, so too it can mean that we have much magic to anticipate into the future. Photo album perusal is never, ever a quick glance, even at a page of aging faded cellophane wrapped moments from the past. These treasured snaps bring back the happiest of memories and somehow act as a trigger as we remember a special time or a specific occasion that brought us happiness back there in the past, that is to be enjoyed now in the present. Maybe those times, way back when, were magical after all?

Maybe they were portents in this our Spiritual life here on Earth or they have unleashed, especially for us, the power of evocative actions that were a part of the skilful magic that is a truly highly prized element of our very being. Magic moments? Truly they are, and just like the words of the song...filled with love. So often the gift of love has come to us. There was somewhere back then the very first love, that brought with it that gnawing feeling in our stomachs.

This may or may not have been accompanied by not being able to eat or sleep. Then there were the endless days of childhood, before we became a product of the system, and time took over us. Our first kitten or puppy and the first cakes and jelly party with laughing clowns, or a summer picnic. Each of us has our own trigger for the magic of the past, and we are all governed by the level of happiness that it brought us. So too is the great impact brought about by anticipation of magic. Knowing something is going to happen can be predictable, but if it is special and if it releases something within us; then the greatest thrill can come from pleasures that are yet to come, and which will be the next photo album on the shelf, harnessing yet another magical time, just for us. Nostalgia is a great gift, so do not relegate it in favour of what may come along. We are born into a World, thankfully, without a sell by date. Thus we are free to live the life we can have. Every day can be a part of the magic as we inspire others and indeed allow this to form a part of the greatest delight of our lives. Here the not knowing is the joy, the very greatest joy as we examine our own magic moments. Doubt that magic can come and you are blocking the true treasures of the future and what it can bring Being a part of what can be might just be enough magic to spur us on. As I get older I find myself doing the maths just in case I really am younger than I think I am. Sadly, although I was away when they did adding at school, I always end up with the same sixty one years I have been given. I cannot regret anything whatsoever, but the longer that I live the more I see the magic of life and the great result that my Mediumship has brought me and continues to bring me.

New magic is a joy to behold. Recently the young son of a friend in Norway taught me that the, “high five” is out and the touch of the knuckles together with someone very hip. This knuckle action is followed by a V sign spread horizontally across the forehead. I questioned this V action, whereby my friend’s son looked at me, and told me it was a hippy sign from the 1960’s.

So it was. Sadly he was very good at the maths and knew that, for me, it was for the second time around. Now that’s magic for you!

Days out in Benidorm WITH 5 separate theme parks, it’s easy to understand why Benidorm is a great destination for family holidays. Now that they are all open daily for the season, here is a summary of what each has to offer.

TERRA MITICA

Theme park divided into 5 zones – Egypt, Rome, Greece, Iberia and the Islands with stunning architecture and a multitude of rides in each, including a 360degree rollercoaster for the adventurous thrill seekers.

Beautifully landscaped grounds with plenty of shady areas and a new swimming section with Jacuzzi and plenty of water rides throughout the park. Some good shows throughout the day but dialogue is in Spanish – however it is easy to follow.

Be aware you are not allowed to take your own food and drink into the park.

AQUALANDIA

MUNDOMAR

Marine animal park directly next door to Aqualandia which also has many exotic animals. A particular favourite with children, offering plenty of shows throughout the day, including parrot, sea lion and dolphin spectaculars. There is also an opportunity to book a unique ´swimming with the sea lions´ or ´encounter with dolphins´ experience – however both need to be pre-booked.

The largest waterpark in Europe and a favourite throughout the hot months with everyone, regardless of age. The coloured water slides are quite an iconic sight on the Benidorm skyline and Aqualandia has the worlds highest capsule slide – Verti-Go, measuring 33 metres. Open from 10am, you can purchase all days tickets or half day – valid after 3pm.

AQUA NATURA

Water park located next to Terra Natura. Smaller than Aqualandia but there is certainly no shortage of slides, plumes and activities to keep you amused which has the added bonus of a free Sea Lion show twice daily. There is a man made beach with sand and this park is probably better suited than the other water park for younger children.

TERRA NATURA

Wildlife park divided into 3 zones – America, Asia and Europe where you get to see animals of those continents living within their natural environment. The park has over 1500 animals of 200 different species – 50 of which are classified as endangered and they run a very successful breeding program. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day, such as feeding the animals and for the brave you can fly across the elephant plain on the 400 metre ´Zipwire´!

THIRTY YEARS, four months and one week ago BBC1 brought a brand new show to the screen that was designed to make inroads into the pulling power of Coronation Street, and with gritty groundbreaking tales of folks in the London Borough of Walford, EastEnders took off with a bang, and the soap loving armchair millions were beside themselves. In case you’re a big fan of the show, I suggest you consider not reading on as you might well lose it … big time!

Phil Daniels, the actor who popped up in February 2006 as Pat Butchers cheekie chappie wheeler dealer nephew Kevin Wicks said in an interview last week that the show has ´run its course and should be axed by the BBC´ were his actual words, easy with that coffee cup there!

Mostly because of my lifestyle, I ´ve long since left watching EastEnders off of my things to do of an evening, and with Daniels adding “how have we allowed this moribund dirge of a soap opera to carry on for so long,” I´ve now got to realising that my decision to give EastEnders a wide berth was very much along those lines.

Phil Daniels (Kevin Wicks) was offered a new contract to remain in the show 18 months on in August 2007, but decided to decline the offer and was duly killed off in a car crash, yet another example of how the morbid has continually been route one for the producers of the show. Why not have him winning some lottery dosh and moving to the Seychelles!

I decided to include this story after I found out that an internet survey produced a sizeable 57% of peeps who agreed with Phil Daniels, that apart, I will be wearing a crash helmet every time I leave the house!

Yet more confirmation that the pop business is completely nuts comes in the shape of a promo item from Helsinki that includes 1000 cardboard cutouts of Nicki Minaj and her famous buttocks! I have to say it must be comforting for Nicki to know her buttocks are just as famous as she is. Oh yes, and the buttock cut-outs were placed outside a cathedral in the city! Honest!

I genuinely hope the rumours that The Crystal Maze is returning is not just idle gossip. The original shows ran on Channel 4 in the 90´s, and at its peak was the most watched on the station regularly attracting 4- 6 million viewers. It’s also said that legendary host Richard O’Brien will be part the project, so cross your eyes, ears, nose and throat it’s not twaddle talk.

Art Trail in the Old Town Of Altea has opened!

VISIT ART Trail in Altea, a collaboration between Restaurante Casa Vital, Fundaci贸n Eberhard Schlotter Altea and Alte Arte Mojito & Art Lounge. We present seven artists from Spain, Sweden, Germany and Norway, all with a special attachment to the artist town of Altea, which has for many years attracted artists from all over the world due to its special light, beautiful scenery and rich cultural life. In addition to viewing the art enjoy good food and wine at Casa Vital or experience the mojito and art bar concept of Alte Arte Mojiteria.

The artists will exhibit their works, made in various techniques ranging from classic oil paintings to photography and collage, throughout the summer.

Benissa celebrates Moors and Christians

THIS WEEKEND the town of Benissa host their celebrations for the Moors and Christians in honour of St Pere.

The celebrations in the town started yesterday with a music concert in the evening, and tonight, Friday, at 11 pm there will be a parade in the castle grounds followed by a firework display.

Having problems backing up HI AUNTY: Recently I’ve noticed that backing up my Asus Windows 8.1 pc to my Toshiba external hard drive via File History is not working. It appears to back up in a few seconds (!) but the up-to-date files do not appear on the Toshiba.

There is plenty of free disc space on the Toshiba. It used to back up okay, and the older files from my two PC’s are still there.

Can you help please? Thanks, David.

Aunty says: One possibility is that the amount of disk space you have allocated for back up is now too small...? In the Options, perhaps increasing the size of space for back-up will help... There is the ‘offline cache’ option’ that allows you to set a limit on the amount of disk space used for back-ups.

It may also be that there is a single folder that it causing a problem.

To find out which folder is causing the problem requires a bit of trial and error. I think there is an option in File History to exclude certain folders from back up. So it will be a case of doing a back-up excluding one folder at a time, to see if the back-up functions or not. You will then be able to find which folder the back-up is failing on, and do a manual back-up of that folder instead...

Removing Adbysaleplus Hello Aunty Virus, Hope you can help again. I have that adsbysaleplus on my PC. There are lots of programs on Google, but do not trust them. Can you point me in the right direction, and also how to avoid getting it again? Regards, Brian Aunty says: First of all you need to uninstall Saleplus, and all the other programs that were installed at the same time. Do this by using the Uninstall service from Control Panel. Scroll through the list of currently installed programs and remove the following: SalePlus, GoSave, deals4me, SaveNewaAppz, and any others that were installed at the same date and time. Check to make sure the folders have been deleted. Go to the Start menu and search for “SalePlus”. Delete found “salesplus” items You then need to go to your internet browsers, and in each of them you will need to go to the add ons / extensions section of the settings and remove the salesplus add on (and any others that you think may be related) You may also have to go into your search engine providers list, and check for any unwanted search engines. After that, check that your web browser’s “home page” is set to the home page you want.

Then download, install, update and run Antimalware Bytes to check for any more traces.

To avoid getting it again, be careful of what websites you go to, and what you click on those pages. Also, when installing “free” software, make sure you do the advanced install options, as “default” install options can install such unwanted items.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Prefixes –

CON and CONTRA AS YOU may have noticed by now, I find words themselves fascinating. I am not an expert in the origins of words, more like an enthusiastic amateur, which means that I simply enjoy looking at words and working out how they are made up, or how they connect with others. If by doing this I can make the language more memorable and useful for others, so much the better. There are different types of language enthusiasts, and the ones who I think win hands down are those who are so desperate to communicate that they will get their message over one way or another just through sheer force of personality. However, just enjoying words is a good start!

At the moment we’re looking at prefixes, which are bits tacked on to the front of words, and there are enough of these to keep us going for a very long time. Sometimes the connections between the prefix and the root word are quite obvious, but in many cases they have evolved to create a completely new meaning and become more obscure. Today we’re going to look at a few of the more obvious examples, the idea being that if you are

interested you can explore and discover other similar connections for yourself.

“Con” as you no doubt know means “with”, and when it appears at the front of a word it sometimes carries this sense of “with” “together” or “joining”.

A few fascinating examples spring to mind: the first for some reason, being “cónyuge” which means “spouse”.

The “yuge” part comes from “yugo” meaning “yoke” (as in oxen, not eggs) so a “cónyuge” is the one you are yoked together with. Many comments spring to mind but I will refrain.

A word I like a lot and is quite trendy amongst progressive Spaniards is “convivencia”. This comes from “vivir” to live, so means “living together”. School children are taken away for weekends of “convivencia” and the word is also used when talking about subjects like immigration and integration, which sound a lot more serious.

“Convocar” is frequently used word, amongst other things for calling meetings. Its root “voc” is connected to the word “voz” (voice) and “vocal” which exists in English

It only occurred to me the other day that the grammatical word “conjugar” is a combination of “con” and the word “jugar” meaning to play. As well as meaning the way we have to change the endings of verbs, the dictionary says that “conjugar” means “to blend”. I rather like the root idea of “playing together” though and am looking forward to announcing this to the next lot of mystified students which we are tackling verb changes in the present tense!

Similar to “con” but a bit longer is “contra” which means “against”. Many of the examples of this are similar in English.

We have “decir” to say “contradecir” to “contradict”. “Mandar” is to order “contramandar” is to “countermand”.

“Contranatural” means “against nature” that is “unnatural” whilst “contrario” means “opposite”, reminding us of “contrary” in English, which was problem with “Mary, Mary” as we all know.

Adjusting to a better life with hearing instruments CHOOSING A hearing device is just the beginning of the journey to better hearing. How quickly you adjust to wearing hearing aids depends on how often you wear them.

INITIALLY YOU will notice an increase in the noise levels around you. This background noise has always been there but with your hearing loss you might not have noticed these sounds. As with anything that is new, it will take time and patience to adapt to this new way of hearing.

Hearing is only part of how we exchange thoughts ideas and feelings. Reading lips, facial expressions and gestures can help.

The following steps make communicating easier when you are adjusting to a new hearing system: Look at the person who is speaking and sitting face to face in a quiet room Minimise distractions: for example, washing dishes at the sink and trying to have a conversation is difficult even for those with normal hearing Move closer to the speaker and within sight Try different locations in a room with poor acoustics

When you use your instruments for the first time, you will notice that the hearing process feels different. That’s because your brain has to relearn how to hear soundsespecially the complex range of frequencies in speech.

The following are observations that first-time hearing aid wearers have made: It takes time to adjust to wearing hearing aids Your voice may sound different at first Hearing situations with background noise should improve, but probably not as much as in quiet places This period of adjustment is completely normal but before long you will begin to hear sounds that you have been missing as well as some you didn’t realise were gone - such as the hum of household appliances.

Research suggests that speech comprehension increases over time and also the more the instruments are worn.

Enjoying rural landscapes

by Jack Troughton THE SUNDAY Strollers group of U3A Marina Baixa enjoyed stunning views as they explored the village of Xirles, north of Polop.

A group of 16 – 13 members, two associate members and a two-year-old – set off from the village car park. Five of the braver men took a rocky path, the remainder found a steep Tarmac route easier underfoot.

Reunited above the village, they enjoyed the stunning views back across the valley overlooking Callosa, and the route took them back into the other end of Xirles.

The party was glad to find evening shade as they rounded off the adventure with cold drinks at Polop on the return journey.

U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz Del Pi. The next meeting is Monday 27th July – doors open at 10am and the desks close at 10.50am to insure a prompt 11am start.

20th birthday celebrations for the Shamrock Bar Benidorm

THE WEEKEND saw hundreds of people join the staff at the Shamrock bar to help celebrate their 20th anniversary.

The party started on Friday 19th June and ran right through the weekend, with live music and dancing throughout the three days and going on into the early hours of the mornings.

A large stage area was set up outside for the live entertainment which included traditional Irish dancing and live bands, including the Galway Boys “The Rattlers”.

Entertainment was also inside the bar area creating a real party atmosphere.

Many of the customers dressed in the traditional green but you could also spot the hen and stag parties that had joined the celebrations with their own, unique, outfits.

It was a long weekend for the staff with copious amounts of alcohol being served, but then it isn’t every day a bar celebrates it’s 20th anniversary.

IT HARDLY seems as if the football season has ended and yet next week CD Torrevieja will be back on the training ground.

by Keith Nicol Half a dozen players have already been signed for the 2015/16 with a few more expected to be announced this weekend and early next week.

While the world of local football is in a spot of turmoil, with Elche being relegated one minute and then back in La Liga the next, Cartagena facing relegation, Real Murcia facing closure and many more items of intrigue to be dealt with before August and the kick off of the new season, CD Torrevieja are busy fundraising for. For those interested in supporting the club while at the same time enjoying one of the cheapest from of advertising possible, the club are producing 2,000 posters to publicise home games, starting in mid-July with the friendly matches.

It costs just 25€ to take out an advert.

Built in 1971, the Vicente Garcia Stadium is showing her age, although thanks to President Vicente, the pitch is in great shape.

But the entrance and may of the areas around the club could do with a splash of new paint and so on July 18th, the club are having an ‘open to all ‘ painting party. They are still looking for volunteers on the morning and early afternoon of July 18th. If you are able to support them with either, please let Chris Dawin, Club PR man, know.

This week the board started their new “200

Club”, looking to find 50 companies that are happy to buy two season tickets (you can use them, raffle them, give them to someone deserving). They will then be entered into the Grand Draw and the winner will become the official club sponsor for the 2015/16 season, having their name on the front of both the home and away shirts. A 50/1 chance of winning 20,000€ of shirt advertising, not bad at all.

Those that have been following the club website www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com will know that they have confirmed the signings of some key players for next season, while some players from the UK arriving in Torrevieja during July for a trial.

If anyone in the Torrevieja area would consider playing host to some of these young men, please let Chris know.

On July 18th CD Torrevieja will welcome Cordobra, who have just been relegated.

Having faced the likes of Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar and Bale it will interesting to see how they cope against the likes of Jorge, Vicente and Oscar. On July 24th, Steve Bruce will be bringing his “relegated from the Premier League” side Hull City to play in Torrevieja.

Kick off times and ticket prices will be confirmed next week. Season tickets will be going on sale later this week. Tribuna tickets will be 125€ and General tickets 100€.

Sucina Golf Society Match Report A WARM and sunny day greeted 40 players at Saurines de La Torre (IRM Course) on Tuesday16th June, so nearly all players opted for a buggy. A breeze did pick up which gave the players some much needed respite from the heat. This month we decided on a team game and individual Stableford format, chosing a ´best 2 scores´ option. As the results show, some good scores were recorded, with John Lester scoring a massive 42 points as winner of Division 3. Our handicap secretary will have his scissors out this month!

The course was in good condition but the greens were recently hollow tined which made putting difficult. The Pro Shop, now in the bar, is a long way from the first tee, and quite a distance from where the buggies are kept, so players had to walk back and forth to pick up keys, collect and return buggies and keys.

However, the general feeling was that it was a very enjoyable and social day.

The prizes were presented at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina. We were delighted to welcome our sponsors, Avalon Europe and also that Graeme Wilson was able to join us at Saurines.

The overall results were:Winning team - Gordon Hutchinson, Peter Robinson, Geoff Hallet and Len Stevens with 87 points ( on count back) Runners up - Graeme Wilson (S), Phil Edwards, Trevor Cooling & John Lester with 87 points.

Individual Stableford Division winners - Division 1 - Gordon Hutchinson: 39 points, Division 2 - Richard Davenport: 33 points (on count back) and Division 3 - John Lester with 42 points.

Nearest the pins went to: Hole 6 - Geoff Hallet, Hole 10 - John Storey, Hole 14 - John Lester and Hole 18 - Mike Harding Our next meeting is at Hacienda Riquelme on Tuesday 21st July. The format will be an individual Stableford with a team game. In addition, players will be competing for the Franc y Louise Cup .

THE LAS Salinas Summer Petanca League is now in its 12th week. In division 1 there is no change to the top 3 teams, as Amigos Belgas 1 won away at Guardamar 5-3. Los Bandidos remain 2nd with a hard fought away win at Amigos Belgas 2 6-2.

Pirates 1 stay 3rd with a good home win over Mirador Blue 7-1. Pumas move up to 4th place with a good home win against Dominos Red 7-1. In divsion 2 Dominos Mc Coys consolidated the top spot with a very good home win over Laguna Rosa 7-1. El Rancho, with a good away win at Daja Vieja Hillbillies 8-0 move into second place. Mirador White are now in 3rd place after losing at home to Pirates 2 6-2.

TODAY WE had forty two members and four guests for our Presidents Cup. The course again was in wonderful condition and the weather was excellent but on the hot side. Our guests today were Terry Oram, Wolfgang Shuster, Richard Vass and Ray Clark, who won the visitors prize. There were three match plays today, all keenly fought with the following results: Mike Holloway bt Bill Pyke 1 up, Stella Fox bt Paul Singh 3&1, Colin Foster bt Peter Brown 3&1 Nearest the pin today were hole 5 Alan Simpson and hole 16 Bill Sykes. Twos today were Ray Clark and Bill Sykes.

Campbell’s Costa Blanca International Cup Roda Golf Resort in Mar Menor

By Tony Myles One of Campbell’s recent events took place at the delightful Roda Golf Resort in Mar Menor. The competitors arrived from various parts of Spain and from other European countries and they were all in agreement that Roda Golf is exceptional.

Costa Blanca International Cup Friday was a Pairs Better Ball event and the winners were, Lewys Staple and Adam Stamenkovic, both in their early twenties. Two father and son teams came second and third respectively. Steve and Callum Hitcham was second and third place went to Steve and Lloyd Stock. Both first and third places were from Criegau Golf Club in Wales on their annual away trip and they are already looking forward to returning next year to defend their title.

Celebrations obviously marred the Friday winners as none of them featured in the Saturday results. The standard of golf remained high with the top two players on 42 points and third place with 41pts. The winner was John Gibson who scored an incredible 24 points on his back nine. Commiserations must go to James Woodham, who also scored 42 points but couldn’t match John on the back 9. A solid 40pts was scored by Wolfgang Niedemark to

come third.

Such very positive feedback has motivated Campbell to negotiate special rates for green fees at Roda and for rooms at two local hotels. A versatile people carrier SLIDING DOORS are a great benefit. I’ve never considered this until now. But as we’re crammed onto a cross channel ferry where unless you’re really scrawny you are unable to access your vehicle, such doors are a distinct advantage. While others have to patiently wait for other cars to move so that they may gain entry to theirs we simply pull the rear doors of the Mazda 5 and smile.

We’ve already had a long difficult journey with our two young daughters, who are understandably fed up so late at night, especially after they have had to endure unexpected delays. But thankfully they can get into the back of the car and soon they are fast asleep.

With two young children it does become clear how awkward life can be just parking the car in a car park. Unless there is a parent and toddlers space available at your local Tesco car parks are not user-friendly at all for most vehicles especially if

car seats need removing. Again this is not a problem in the Mazda 5 and it is a joy to park in such situations. As is the side of the road or indeed any other awkward situation.

The drawback though is that if Harriett decides to be awkward, and believe it or not the little cherub can be at times, she can actually open the sliding door from inside and there’s nothing we can do about it. Here’s the scenario: Harriett is tired and irritable. Caroline puts her in her child seat and shuts the sliding door. As Caroline gets into the front seat, Harriett opens the sliding door. Yes, I can lock all the doors from the driver’s seat but then Caroline is left locked outside! The only way round this that we can find is to restrain Harriett! The folding rear picnic tables help entertain her, though and she does enjoy putting her apple on hers.

It’s certainly a capable vehicle with a cavernous boot, large enough for our tandem pushchair and luggage. It is also possible to transport seven passengers thanks to a third row of seats tucked under the floor in the boot.

Although the diesel engine is audible from inside especially under pressure it is a good driver’s car, too with a reasonable amount of torque making it a capable over-taker.

Cruise control is always helpful when travelling down the motorway, especially at night when there’s less traffic about. Over the course of the test in Jersey it returns around 38mpg. Other bonuses are the folding armrests in the front and the power folding wing mirrors, again ideal for tight spots.

“Never before has there been so much choice and while the Mazda 5 may not be the first to spring to mind it is worth considering,” says Parkers, the car experts. “It has been seating seven

since 2005 and has done a decent job of it too. This time it gets the full design overhaul with the look inspired by water, wind and nature. Basically, it’s got some flowing lines along the side of the car. The styling is an opinion-splitter but Mazda’s ‘family face’, also found on models like the 6 and the 3, is an improvement giving the 5 a sharper front end. While the manufacturer claims it will seat seven, squashing someone into the middle seat of the second row is not recommended and is best reserved for small children making this more of a 6+1 rather than a bona fide seven-seater. However, don’t let this put you off. The clever folding seats make the interior incredibly functional and practical, while you get the usual Mazda build quality and reliability.

“Engine options are limited to three - a 1.8-litre petrol with 113bhp was dropped during the car’s life cycle and in the end just the 2.0-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel were left in the range. The former has 148bhp for a sprint to 62mph in 11 seconds, while the latter means CO2 emissions as low as 138g/km and claimed average fuel economy of 54.3mpg. Not too shabby for a seven-seater people-carrier.

Available in both petrol and diesel guises, the new specification includes rear parking sensors, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an automatic dimming rear-view mirror, Sat-nav, Bluetooth connectivity, climate control, cruise control and a six-speaker stereo system.”
