Fight goes to No.10 PENSIONER ALBERT Fereday has called on Prime Minister David Cameron to restore the winter fuel allowance to all pensioners living in Europe. by Jack Troughton
See page 19
HE DESCRIBED the controversial decision to axe the cold weather payment to people living in Spain as “illegal” and said it was unfair to discriminate against people who had paid taxes all their lives. In his letter, the 87-year-old wrote: “Thousands of British pensioners come here and to other places in winter and still claim the heating allowance. Do you think this is fair Mr Cameron? “And thousands of people go to live in Britain and they claim for everything and they have not paid a penny into the system – I think you and your party are afraid to tackle the problem.” Albert, who lives in Benidorm, said he worked and paid taxes from the age of 14. His letter, sent by registered mail to Downing Street, concludes by saying: “I am not being greedy Mr Cameron, as I am only asking for what I believe I am entitled to.” Iain Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for the Department of Work and Pensions, introduced a temperature test for the winter fuel allowance and announced the payment would halt in September for those living in warm countries, including Spain and France. Mr Duncan Smith provoked anger by saying it was “absurd and offensive” that taxpayers should fund payments to people who had retired to “warmer countries”.

Road safety warning
By Jack Troughton PEDESTRIANS RISK their lives crossing the road outside a popular Benidorm camping site, residents warned this week. The entrance to Camping Villasol is on a dangerous blind bend and there is no formal pedestrian crossing for people walking into the resort. And RTN was told how drivers frequently ignore the speed limit as they negotiate the bend – increasing the risk of a tragic accident. Richard Manger said: “You take your life in your hands when you cross the road – there is nowhere to cross in safety at all. “It is really getting stupid; it is supposed to be a 40kph speed limit but no one takes any notice of the restriction.” He said anyone walking into Benidorm was forced to cross the road or to walk in a cycle lane. “There is absolutely nowhere to cross in safety at all.”
Albert Fereday
Continued from front page SACK However, Albert believes the politician step down if it is shown scrapping the payment was illegal. “He has made a mistake – if you make a mistake like that it should be the sack with no pension and no pay outs. “I am not happy about this situation and all I want is fair play. I paid into the system all my life and everyone should be treated the same.” Albert, originally from the Black Country, understands that Chancellor George Osborne needed to make cuts. “Mr Osborne is thinking about pruning, cutting costs. If you prune a tree you start at the top – you never start at the bottom but this is what Mr Osborne is doing.” He said politicians at Westminster did not realise just how cold countries like Spain and France could be in winter – and pensioners could not afford air-conditioning to keep cool in summer. “Our pension is one of the lowest in Europe. We have to keep warm in winter and cool in summer – pensioners have air-conditioning but cannot afford to have it on despite it being red hot in the summer with sky high temperatures – perhaps we should get a subsidy for electricity prices!” Albert, who has lived in Spain for 12 years, added: “I believe I have a good argument and I am glad RTN is doing its bit to support pensioners.”
PROTEST It is understood the European Union will examine the legality of the alleged discrimination over winter fuel payments later this year and campaigners hope more people will follow Albert’s example and make a personal protest. Margaret Hales, MBE, is one of the leading figures protesting on the Costa Blanca. She believes the new regulations for the winter fuel payment were “riddled with prejudice and ignorance”. She said: “We are still British citizens and should receive our pensions and other benefits. Of course some of us are not in need of extra money to pay fuel bills and some of us are very grateful for those few hundred Pounds. “Parts of Spain, France and Greece are perishingly cold in winter. Mr Iain Duncan Smith has manufactured a regulation based on myth so that it affects us who are not able to protest in front of Parliament. “And he saves such a relatively small amount of his DWP budget that he must be doing it out of prejudice.” Margaret acknowledged that fighting a myth was extremely difficult but a determined campaign was in the process of raising the issue of winter fuel payments with the Select committee on Work and Pensions. “I commend those who take the trouble and effort to write to the Prime Minister. The battle is not yet lost.”

French farmers disrupt Spanish goods FRENCH FARMERS have been causing havoc all week over complaints of foreign competition. by Jeanette Rice THE FRENCH farmers are complaining that a fall in prices due to foreign competition and a squeeze in margins by food processors and retailers has put many livestock farmers close to bankruptcy. French farmers say that the have also been hit by lower meat consumption, with a reduced demand from China and a Russian ban on EU food imports. It has been estimated that around ten per cent of farmers face bankruptcy. However the European Commission has called on France to ensure that goods flow freely through Europe after several incidents occurred on Tuesday. French livestock and dairy farmers blocked imports from German and Spanish producers, stopping lorries wherever possible and checking their loads. In retaliation Spanish farmers warned they would push for a boycott of French food and farm products. The Spanish farmers union, UPA, said “we Spaniards want the same as the French, fair prices for our products”. In a bid to calm the farmers the French president, Francois Hollande announced plans to raise the price of beef, pork and milk, with a promise of up to 1.1 billion euros in tax rebates, delayed payments and loan guarantees. Although this decision was made on Tuesday it seemed to have little effect on the protesting farmers who have continued to hijack foreign lorries carrying competing goods and erected blockages on the border with Germany. In an escalation of activity on Wednesday, farmers took to their tractors and blocked a main route into the country. They then began to spray the cars with manure. The convoy of tractors then continued to the supermarkets, spreading liquid waste in front of the stores. One French union leader, Franck Sander said “the measures that the government have announced do not deal with the competition nor the long term, they are merely postponing contributions”. There are fears that Spanish and German farmers may retaliate as they see their goods being destroyed by the French farmers.

Changes in Airport procedures
BARCELONA’S EL-PRAT airport had new passport control systems operational on Monday, with the Alicante-Elche airport next on the list. The Interior Ministry inaugurated the new intelligent border control systems which are part of an ongoing programme where high levels of cross border transfers take place. The new system is designed to streamline the process for passengers with digitalised documents, using facial recognition and fingerprint detectors as well as reading the information on the passport. Jorge Fernandez Diaz, the Interiror Minister said “this will help people gain access to Spain without compromising on safety, with better controls using fewer people”.

Ongoing troubles for Gibraltar
Queues at the border
by Jeanette Rice LONG QUEUES formed again last week at the border crossing between Gibraltar and Spain for both vehicles and those travelling on foot. Gibraltar has again made an official complaint to the European Union after the Spanish government was “testing new security measures” at the frontier between the British territory and Spain which resulted in traffic queuing for hours. Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, said that they have made a report to present to the European Union “in order to draw attention to the manner in which the Spanish government is implementing the recommendation made by the commission”. Dr Garcia went on to say that “the effect of this seems to be designed to cause as much disruption as possible”. In the Gibraltar parliament the issue was discussed as fears over the impact of such actions by the Spanish would have for tourism, with expenditure on the rock dropping by over £111 million since 2011. Whilst it was accepted that other factors had been involved, such as a weak Euro
against the pound, the parliament felt that the drop in spending was predominantly due to the border issues. The queues started as the Spanish authorities began using new passport e-gates at a time in the day where border crossings were at their busiest. Some waited over an hour to cross with reports of the problems lasting late into the evening. The Gibraltar government sends reports to the EU periodically together with photographic evidence of such events however no resolution has been found to help those who need to travel to work on the rock and are constantly finding themselves delayed. Spanish Interior Minister, Jorge Fernandez Diaz, visited the port of Algeciras to see at first hand the new passport system in place. Stating that the system was operating normally and at 100% Snr Diaz said “we have installed the new system following the recommendations of the European Union to facilitate the transit of people and vehicles to Gibraltar, we are pleased to have done this earlier than we had promised”.
Fire fighters strike during forest fires
AS NORTHEN Spain burns, with forest fires ripping through the Catalonia area, the forest fire reinforcement service have been striking since Monday. Members of the BRIF, the forest fire fighting reinforcement service, started their indefinite strike in protest of unfair wages and working conditions. On average the fire fighters earn €16,000 a year for performing their dangerous job, however they are also asking for official recognition as fire fighters rather than being called reinforcements. This will be the first time in history that any fire prevention or containment service have taken industrial action during active fires, with 570 workers across ten bases not attending the wildfires. The association of forest fire fighters, Atbrif said in a statement “is it fair that we make such a ridiculously paltry amount while we put our lives at risk”. The association is due to meet with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment in Madrid on Monday.

Turtle rescue
LOCAL POLICE rescued a turtle in La Cala de Benidorm. Workers that manage the glider ride spotted the turtle on Tuesday entangled in a plastic bag and notified the Local Police. Attending the scene the officers managed to catch the distressed turtle who had minor injuries. At the veterinary clinic it was found that the turtle had eaten part of the plastic bag in an attempt to free itself so treatment for cleaning the stomach was given. The turtle has now been moved to the Centre for Wildlife Recovery in El Saler, Valencia, where it will remain under observation for a few day. Once recovered the turtle will be returned to the La Cala de Benidorm waters.
Heritage status? Really? Benidorm? THE INDEPENDENT newspaper sent Alistair Dawber, their Spainish correspondent, to investigate the application for Benidorm to receive the Unesco World Heritage status.
Great Wall of China, a Unesco heritage site
by Jeanette Rice FIRST STOP for the reporter was a meeting with the mayor for Benidorm, Toni Perez, who is leading the bid which may take another three years before a decision is made. Toni Perez told Alistair “it is a story about human creation, we are well aware that we are not a monument like the Great Wall of China but we do meet most of the Unesco criteria”. Whilst the town hall officials are convinced that the status is achievable out on the street it is a different story. Known world wide as an inexpensive holiday destination popular with British stag and hen parties Mr Dawber took a walk through the town to see for himself what it was that Benidorm offered. As he travelled along Avenida de Mallorca at midnight music was booming out from the bars and clubs and he reported that “the British were queuing outside a kebab shop whilst watching a tabletop dancer, no doubt a holidaymaker, in just her underwear, although one man was missing the impromptu show as he appeared to have passed out on a bench”. Local businesses who benefit from the somewhat “lively” British holidaymakers include the many bars along Calle Gerona, and with the Unesco bid submitted it is probable that they may have to reassess what they offer to their customers. Already, as reported here in the RTN, measures are being taken to stop short breaks by the hotels in the town, offering only 7 day minimum bookings and plans to re evaluate the all inclusive hotel growth in the resort are under way. Snr Perez said that they were not trying to discourage the British from visiting Benidorm but need to show that the resort has more to offer, “the bid is not a joke” he said, “often the media in Britain does not take Benidorm seriously but we offer theme parks for families, have stunning countryside and clean beaches. No doubt the Independent reporter for Spain probably left just as confused as when he arrived with the conflicting views of what Benidorm does actually offer, however, he summarised his visit by stating that although many may laugh at the Unesco bid and are quick to point out the town’s flaws – as most of the southern part of the town is almost entirely Spanish or owned by Spaniards you could say it has rich heritage.

Why some expats couldn’t vote

Britian’s most wanted – arrest in Algeciras
by Jeanette Rice AN OFFICIAL report has been released detailing why many expats couldn’t vote in the UK May 2015 elections. Unbelievably the reason behind the scandal was simply that returning officers did not have enough money to put the right stamps on postal ballot papers sent overseas, using UK stamp rates only. Many expats did not received their ballot papers before the May 7th poll and a flood of complaints headed in the direction of the Electoral Commission. More than 400 people filed a complaint to the commission but figures are likely to have been much higher with many not registering officially the “no show” of their ballot papers. The report stated that “within the UK, returning officers (ROs) are required to include sufficient pre-paid postage on return envelopes for voters to send their completed postal ballot papers back. They are not, however, required or funded to provide the additional postage necessary to enable packs to be returned to the UK from other countries”. The Electoral Commission also pointed out
Friday July 31 - Thursday August 6 2015
in the report that “the UK return postage is normally printed onto the return envelopes, and it appears that in some cases it was also included on return envelopes in postal ballot packs sent to overseas addresses. This led to confusion for some overseas voters who may have mistakenly assumed that the prepaid postage on the envelope would be sufficient for them to return their postal ballot pack to the UK”. In a mishmash of ballot issues the report also found that expats who had registered to vote by the deadline of April 20th were unlikely to have received their postal ballot packs in time to complete and return it them to the UK, with some recommended latest posting dates from overseas being April 13! The report has made several recommendations, including that all Returning Officers ensure that overseas packs have the correct

Water in short supply
Tarbena
by Jeanette Rice TARBENA HAS become the latest town to have water restrictions imposed during what seems to be a never ending heatwave. Last week the council in Tarbena set restrictions on the water supply to the town where between the hours of 10pm and 8am the residents had to be reliant on water that they had stored during the day. The measures were intended to be temporary but now the council are in talks about lengthening the restrictions through into August when the towns population multiplies. The first cuts in the Marina Baixa area were in Orcheta, who also had their supplies cut overnight to try and ensure and ongoing supply, Altea also has had a similar problem
with some of the urbanisations.. Councillor for the environment in Tarbena, Juan Carlos Catalan, said “this is simply to allow the well to recover overnight so that we can cater for our 700 residents”. Snr Catalan went on to say that the measures were working and that “it is preferable to cut the water for a few hours a day and allow the well to recover, because if the flow gets too low the water cannot be used”. The council of Alicante is urgently building a new well to increase the flow of water to help the current situation. Last year the luxury developments of Altea Hills and El Mascarat went weeks without drinking water because the supply wells were salinated.

El Campello Blood Donations
TODAY, Friday, between 5pm and 9pm residents are being asked to pop along to Muchavista beach in the area opposite Liceo Francés to donate blood. A spokesperson for the local donor clinic said “on behalf of all the patients, we would like to thank all those who donate in El Campello, because without your blood we could not perform operations or organ transplants.”
Commission to investigate “all inclusive” BENIDORM COUNCIL voted on Monday to establish a commission which will study the impact of the all inclusive hotels in the town. Socialist spokesperson, Ruben Martinez, said “I am very satisfied with the outcome of the vote and would like to thank all the political parties for supporting this, which I hope will benefit all businesses and workers in our town”. The proposal received 22 votes in favour of the commission and 3 abstentions. Ximo Puig, councillor for tourism is required to obtain all relevant information by 30th October.
The commission will be composed of a member from Hosbec, a member from of a hotel establishment, a technical representative of the Foundation Visit Benidorm, Aico, ABRECA-COBRECA, Ociobal, UGT, CCOO, APTUR, Jovempa, Avive, Neighbourhood Council, theme parks, Benidorm Palace, Camping Association, Association of Golf Courses and the Casino Mediterraneo. Snr Martinez hopes that this will be a “healthy, positive and crucial” debate between the commission members and preserve the tourism model.

Battle over iconic building
Do you have a story? Email rtnmail@roundtownnews.com
MADRID is bracing itself for a battle to save the iconic España Building in the heart of the city, which is now threatened with demolition. by Jeanette Rice MOST WHO have visited the city will have passed by the building, either on a tour bus, by car or on foot. The building, which occupies an entire city block has become a landmark since being built in 1953. The 25 floor building was Europe’s tallest when it opened and has become part of the city’s cultural heritage. The building was sold in June 2014 by the Santander Group to a Chinese property giant, Dalian Wanda for 265 million euros with the condition that the facade and the side walls of the property remained intact. Angry politicians and the general public have begun a strong campaign to save the building, since Dalian Wanda made its plans clear, which has been empty since 2006 due to its poor condition and also the very high maintenance costs. Dalian Wanda plan to turn the whole building into rub-
ble and then build a luxury hotel, shopping centre and exclusive residential properties on the land, saying that the for safety reasons the facade will need to come down. A Spanish architect, Cristina Guardia, has said “it is a very complicated building but I do not think total demolition is needed, restructuring from inside could be enough to keep the facade”. Meetings are ongoing between the Chinese company and the Madrid council to try and find a resolution to the problem, with the city council emphasising that the general public will be consulted and allowed to have substantial input. In China it is common practice to tear down old buildings and it is a learning curve for the investors who are now finding that the treatment of protected sites is much stricter under European legislation.

More trouble for “Ibiza Shores”
FOLLOWING THE article in the RTN last week, where we reported that the islanders and politicians of Ibiza were uniting to stop the making of the MTV reality show in August, an Ibiza businessman has joined in the battle by registering the name “Ibiza Shore”. Jaume Torres discovered that the name had not been registered and so started legal proceedings to have the commercial name as his. Jaume said “I was amazed that the name was still free so acted immediately. The registry process takes months, so technically the brand belongs to no one, but according to the patent and brand law, the first to apply for it has priority”. Jaume went on to say “I am fully supporting the initiative to say ‘no’ to this programme which will tarnish Ibiza’s image”. MTV applied for the name just one day after Jaume as the islands council said it will block all licences required to produce the programme. Let’s just hope MTV don’t decide to focus on making “Benidorm Shores” instead. Incidentally the name is still available!

Water Shortage I CANNOT understand how people here on the Costa Blanca can still not understand how grave our water shortage is. The water companies should change tariffs to reflect usage. The first m2 per house should be charged at the current price, the second should be expensive, and subsequently at the price of petrol. Perhaps then people would not leave their taps running when they clean their teeth, or keep topping up their pools ...... John Fletcher
Watch your shopping! WE WERE shopping at a well known supermarket on the N332 in Orihuela Costa. It is quite something how we have to be on guard so as not to be over charged. It sometimes feels like we are entering this supermarket at our own risk. The couple in front of us bought numerous items, and paid with their debt card. The cashier waited until they paid, then asked them if they wanted bags which they needed, this started the confusion. As they were putting their items in the bags, she hastily started ringing in our items, and instead of putting our things separate, she pushed them onto the items in front with the other customer. We had to try get our things and try to keep watching the till as she was hastily putting things through. We have experienced this behaviour before to distract customers, and overcharge in amongst the confusion. During the summer and so many people shopping, be careful to see the cashiers do not overcharge. It is not that I am paranoid, it is just that I do not trust anyone. John Brundell, Punta Prima
Big fish in a small fish bowl HAVING LIVED in Spain for eight years I am learning about life in urbanizations. With urbanizations there has to be a president. Some people want to be President, whilst others avoid it. Some act like a king, a legend in their own minds, or one could say, a big fish in a small fish bowl. Whatever motivates people we can debate another day, but the important thing is to have a representative committee which has the power to make decisions along with the president, and also oblige him, or her, to respect decisions made beforehand by the Assembly of owners. The president’s function is one of legal representation of the community, not arbitrary dictatorship! Much behaviour on communities is group clannishness and virtual thuggery and the victims are often minorities who just want to pay their dues and lead a quiet life. Dave Davenish, Villajoyosa

TRAM delays
THE DENIA to Benidorm route began experiencing delays at the beginning of the week as reduced speed limits were put in place.
by Jeanette Rice Readers may remember a few months ago that RTN reported on the poor state of the sleepers between the two towns and now FGV have applied a speed restriction of 40 km per hour for safety reasons. This means that the 50 km journey now takes 107 minutes, previously 77 minutes, with customers wishing to transfer at Benidorm to an Alicante TRAM finding the additional 15-30 minute delay had meant they had missed their connection. For travellers along the line where connections are also made, such as Villajoyosa and Alicante there is also no guarantee that the TRAM links, so well timed in the past, will be effective with many passengers having to wait an additional fifteen or more minutes. This is not only causing problems for the many tourists using the service but also those who rely on the TRAM to
get to work, with many workers having to make alternative travel arrangements. The trade union representing the FGV workers has spoken out in regard to the effect that this speed restriction will have on their drivers and platform staff, pointing out that their rest periods will now be non existent as the delayed trains will not be able to sit in the stations as they have previously, needing to leave as soon as they load their passengers. Although the ruling for a reduction in speed was made on 17th July it is only this week that the speed restrictions have been implemented. This follows the recent studies which confirmed the dangers on the tracks, with sleepers in disrepair and poor maintenance with a possibility of causing a derailment. In the area of Denia, the conditions are so poor that the TRAM is limited to 15 km per hour.

Summer Parking - made easy
By Irena Bodnarec BENIDORM TOWN Hall have recently extended the blue Pay & Display zones in the centre of Benidorm – making parking even more difficult for holidaymakers. Previously, many would drive into the centre and park on the free white bays for the entire day, but those are now few and far between. However, what is probably unknown by many motorists is that you can in fact display three pay and display tickets on your dashboard beside each other, which will cover you for the morning period, between 9am and 2pm. Parking between 2pm and 4pm is free, then charges resume again between 4pm and 9pm. The expiry times will be the same on each – if you arrive at 9am and feed €1 into the metre, that will give you two hours of parking. Repeat once more then another hour for 50 cents, thus for €2.50 you can park from 9am until 4pm. The ORA parking attendants have confirmed that at present this is legal – however, as with all thing Spanish, “at present” could last for several years!

Benidorm on Breakfast Television
ITV´s POPULAR breakfast programme, Good Morning Britain was broadcast live from Benidorm on Monday morning. by Irena Bodnarec LAST WEEK the UK press all jumped on the bandwagon and published a photo of a jam packed Levante beach. A former Director of Benidorm Tourism Foundation said “What should have been a positive piece turned into a negative one, implying that the beaches were so packed there was no more room for any more holidaymakers. Current Director, Leire Bilbao pointed out that an article in Saturdays Independent Newspaper was a huge disappointment to all those involved in promoting Benidorm. The reporter was taken around the resort and even had an interview with the new Mayor, Toni Perez on the pretext of writing about Benidorm´s bid to apply for Unesco World Heritage Status. Instead there was one small paragraph in reference and the rest of the article was a “typical gutter press appraisal – very disheartening after all our work and effort”. Fortunately for Benidorm, Nick Dixon´s report portrayed the positive aspects of the resort and all it has to offer. He spent Sunday pre-recording footage on the Levante beach and spoke to a number of British holidaymakers about their experiences – all of
which were very positive. Of the two that were broadcast, it was their very first time to Benidorm and they both stated how nice it was, with plenty to do – and in the light of security issues in other holiday destinations, felt very safe here. He also spoke to Ann-Marie Fry – owner of Scoobys Café and Bar, often referred to as Benidorm´s hidden gem as it is tucked away just behind Burger King on the Levante promenade. In her interview she said how busy it was and the recent Tunisia tragedy had certainly had an impact on visitor numbers here. The café was full to bursting as Nick whisked her away for the recording on the beachfront, with many Brits enjoying a freshly made traditional Sunday roast. In the live linkups on Monday morning – which were broadcast at 7:30am and 9.20am, Nick also mentioned factors such as the extra beach police, which the town had employed for the summer. By co-incidence, it was also Nick´s first visit to Benidorm and he said that he would most certainly return with his family having witnessed first hand what the resort had to offer.

A SHUTTLE bus service between Alicante AVE train station and Benidorm has finally been agreed. Toni Perez, mayor of Benidorm, met with the mayor of Alicante to discuss the finer details of the service to be offered. In the meeting it was agreed that Benidorm and Torrevieja would have the long awaited service and both towns were asked to prepare a report to detail the re-
quirements for a regular service as well as companies interested in supplying the service. For Benidorm the link is being viewed as a temporary solution as it was agreed that in the long term a connection between the Luceros TRAM line and the AVE station in Alicante was preferable. Although the meeting discussed the impact that this may have on the local taxi drivers it concluded that the shuttles would not unduly hurt their business as those wanting to use a taxi will still do so.

Dehydrated driving as dangerous as drunk driving DEHYDRATED DRIVING can be just as dangerous as drunk driving, with studies finding that drivers who were mildly dehydrated made as many errors as a drunk driver. by Jeanette Rice WE WOULDN’T think of getting behind the wheel if we had drunk a couple of glasses of wine but we do get behind the wheel when we haven’t had sufficient non-alcoholic fluids. With many of us suffering from the heat and being very aware of the dangers of drink driving this may come as a shock to some readers. In a recent study errors by dehydrated drivers included lane drifting, late braking, crossing the rumble strips and generally struggling to focus. In one survey Loughborough University in the UK put a group of ten men in a driving simulator under various conditions. The men were tested when they were hydrated, mildly dehydrated and when they had consumed alcohol. Phil Watson, responsible for the study said ”we wanted to simulate real
world conditions, such as when you have had a particularly busy day and were unable to take drink breaks”. The results were significantly different under each simulated situation, with twice as many driving mistakes being made when the men had not had sufficient water. In fact when alcohol had been consumed the drivers made very similar mistakes. Phil Watson said “just like alcohol, mild dehydration has been shown to reduce concentration, slow reaction times, impair memory recall, and produce negative effects on mood, all of these factors can impact our ability to safely drive a motor vehicle.” Other findings of this particular research found that at the end of the two hour test the drivers made more errors, adding to the dangers
of dehydration. Although most cars have air conditioning the research found that driving in a car that is too warm can also lead to significant losses of water, this combined with drivers trying to drink less to avoid toilet stops can be a lethal combination. The lesson for anyone, but particularly drivers, is ensure you are hydrated before you drive and ensure that you drink throughout a long journey. Water is obviously the best choice but also tea, juice, milk and coffee can help. Coffee, commonly thought to be a de hydrant can actually give you a caffeine kick which makes you more alert and evidence from previous research has shown that if the coffee is not extremely strong the body retains the fluids from the drink.

Red Cross appeals for Volunteers
THE ALICANTE Red Cross desperately need English speaking volunteers. In a recent visit to the centre the British Consul, SarahJane Morris, discussed how they could make British nationals more aware of the services on offer and how they could attract more Britons to volunteer. Meeting with Ms Morris were the national vice president of the Red Cross, Francisco Javier Gimeno, and area coordi-
nator Miguel Angel Rodriguez. The Red Cross works locally with vulnerable British nationals, giving advice and support and accessing social services. Their services range from helping those with Alzheimer and dementia to offering practical help for those suffering financial difficulties. The Consul said “there is a lot of support offered by the Red Cross that maybe the British community are not aware
of, we want to work closely with the organisation and help build links between English speaking associations”. Sarah-Jane went on to say “we hope that this will also encourage more to volunteer, helping their fellow countrymen with any support that they may need”. If you think that you can offer some of your time to help the Red Cross you can find out more information on www.cruzroja.es.

Moors and Christians battle it out!
19
VILLAJOYOSA YET again hosted its Moors and Christians fiesta over the weekend with amazing authenticity. by Jeanette Rice OVER 3,000 people participated in the re-enactment, where Christian troops defend the town from the Saracen (Moors) attack as happened in 1538. This was one of the most important fiesta’s for the town and just before dawn the guns and shotguns filled the sky with light and fire, which could be heard by residents as far as Finestrat and La Nucia. The Christians travelled through the town to the beach area where Moorish boats, which had sailed from the harbour earlier, headed towards the coastline to perform the re-enactment. The event, which is now officially of “International Tourist Interest”, used music and fireworks throughout the battles to create an ambience of being back in 1538.

New stroke diagnosis equipment NEW EQUIPMENT has been installed that can help diagnose strokes at the Marina Baixa Hospital. The hospital, in Villajoyosa, will now be a leading centre for the detection of cryptogenic strokes, and diagnose the cause. Cryptogenic strokes occur in people who are usually less than 55 years old without an identifiable cause. The Holter device continuously records the patients heart rhythm, recording information when an abnormality is detected, and will enable qualified staff to better improve diagnoses and hopefully prevent the patient suffering from prolonged investigations and instigate quicker treatment.

Chris Froome may be in Spain for La Vuelta CHRIS FROOME became the first Briton to win the Tour de France twice and has not ruled out coming to Spain next month to mount an assault on La Vuelta. by Keith Nicol CHRIS IS taking a well-earned break for a couple of days and Team Sky’s Sir Dave Brailsford says it too early to make a decision but don’t rule him out being in Torrevieja on Sunday 30th August. “I think Spain could be on the cards” said Froome about having a go at Vuelta a España ’15 which starts in Puerto Banus on 22nd August. It’s one of the races that has frustrated him, having been runner up twice, in 2011 and 2014 while finishing fourth in 2012. The other temptation is that only two riders have managed the double of the Tour de France followed by La Vuelta; Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault so this could be one of his few opportunities to pull off the double. The 70th Vuelta a España consists of 21 stages, starting on 22nd August and finishing on 13th September. Torrevieja will be
front and centre on 30th August as the ninth stage, will start from in front of the Old Man of the Sea Monument, although the exact street route has yet to released to the general public. From Torrevieja the race runs along the coastm through Alicante, Benidorm and finishes 168.3 kilometres later in Cumbre del Sol, in the municipality of Benitaxell. We are still awaiting word from Torrevieja’s department of Tourism as to when the stage will start and what the route will be through the city but this is certainly going to be a historic day marked by a great atmosphere. It’s expected to possibly start at 1.20pm and follow a route of 8.5km along the N332 before heading onto the back roads, past the airport and towards Benidorm, following a route that will also see the centre of Alfaz de Pi closed as the cyclists transit

through. August 30th is also the final day of the main summer holidays in Spain so although many Spanish visitors will be leaving the city, thousands more will be arriving specifically for this special event. Torrevieja has been featured as one of the cities that the tour has passed through on route,
many times before, but this is the first time that a Stage has started from the city. Should Chris Froome decide that he will contest this year’s race, even more British cycling enthusiasts will be headed to the City of Salt. Froome says he will make a decision about whether he will be coming to Spain or not in the next few days.

Hospital up for UN award
by Jack Troughton HOSPITAL CLINICA Benidorm and partners at the Polytechnic University of Valencia have been nominated for a top award for work on technology to aid early diagnosis of diseases affecting the brain. The BRAIM project has developed software to help doctors identify the onset of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s, as well as monitoring and treating brain tumours. And the work has earned a nomination for a World Summit Award – a United Nations backed scheme to mark innovation in digital technology. The award scheme recognises tools that make a “positive social impact” and is contested by 178 countries around the world, the hospital as ‘Inscanner’ and the university representing Spain in the category ‘e-Health and Environment’.
Technology developed under BRAIM “stands out for the ease of its use and its ability to help clinicians make better decisions on diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases” said a hospital spokesman. The software produces a 3D image of the brain and identifies regions of the organ needing the attention of medical teams and compares the results against a data base prepared by researchers. It is also invaluable in oncology, identifying tumours and allows doctors to build an objective picture of the effect of treatment of cancer. A second programme developed by Inscanner and the university allows doctors to analyse a series of tests performed on the same patient – combining structural, metabolic and functional information in a single image of the brain.

Donating your body to medical science in Spain Many UK citizens now living in Spain have made the decision of donating their bodies to medical science. They have contacted one of the universities’, Alicante for example, and received an acceptance document called an “Acta De Donacio´n Del Cuerpo” The document is usually in Spanish and the recipient will then think that when they have passed away everything will be taken care of and there will be no cost or stress for their loved ones. Unfortunately that is not always the case. Increasingly UK citizens are not being accepted when the inevitable event happens. The reasons for non-acceptance are included in the terms and conditions on the document they receive once their donation has been accepted. The conditions are in Spanish and are generally as follows:1. If the death happens out of the province of the university. (e.g. Alicante) 2. In the case of accident or any other cause of death which makes a post-mortem examination necessary. 3. When death occurs after surgery and the wound has not yet healed. 4. In the case of death due to an infectious or contagious disease. 5. In those cases where the Professor of Anatomy judges that a correct conservation cannot be undertaken. It is understandable that people now living here in Spain put plans in place for when life´s final event occurs. The system here is so much quicker than the UK, traditionally 24 hours, and very expensive. In addition the arrangements can be further
complicated by language difficulties and the fact that the funeral is required to be paid in full, prior to going ahead. Most people living in Spain, who make the decision to donate their body to medical science, have done so for the purest of reasons. Saving their family and estate some money or to avoid distress at a difficult time for their loved ones. When one of the five reasons for not accepting the donated body are given, the cost and stress at a difficult time for friends and family will be enhanced considerably. It is advisable for those that have donated their body to medical science to also have a funeral plan in place. They will then have ensured that their motive to be totally organised for their final journey will be fulfilled. For further information contact Robert Kirkhope on 685 733 278.

doesn’t disappoint THE CLEAR up after the Low Festival in Benidorm began in the early hours of Monday morning, with the organisers overwhelmed with the success of the event.
by Jeanette Rice FOR THREE nights the festival welcomed over 70,000 music lovers and for miles around bands such as Kasabian, The Libertines and Foals could be heard performing their hearts out for the excited audience. To the amazement of the crowds the British band Foals performed a single from their new album “What Went Down”, which isn’t due to be released until August 28th of this year. The festival, which started last Friday night, hosted not just many big musical names, both here in Spain and in the UK, but also organised various activities for the three days. Temporary tattoo’s were available in the Jack Jones studio, and Pepsi Max had created an area for revellers to use “ultimate ears” a 360 degree blue tooth enabled speaker sound system which is new to the market. There was something for everyone with wine tasting, a special pool area for VIP pass holders and some promoters offering a meet and greet opportunity with the bands. For those who were unable to attend the festival, broadcasts were streamed live on the radio and many of the television stations had substantial coverage. With the clean up now complete organisers are already planning Low Festival2016.

Take care with Facebook
I WAS very distressed when a friend advised me that there was a rather nasty comment on Facebook regarding my charity, Paul Cunningham Nurses. However there were also many wonderful and supportive comments from so many people. Thank you. I understand a very upset and frightened lady enquired about help for her husband who was terminally ill and being discharged from hospital. She wanted advice about what help was available and what to do next. The first reply she received must have added to her distress. It was totally unhelpful and incorrect, with false information, which I found very unpleasant to read. Fortunately, this post has now been deleted. I find it amazing when people want to hurt those who give so much of their time to the community, in this instance offering a service, although limited by the area covered, which otherwise is not available here in Spain. In the UK there are usually three options for palliative care - to remain in hospital, to go to a hospice, or return home with the support of your GP and various charities, including MacMillan Nurses. After my son had died of cancer in a Sue Ryder hospice, on my return to Spain, I realised that there was an enormous need for hospice care, as the Spanish hospitals discharge the patient when diagnosed terminal, which of course, for Spanish nationals is not quite so daunting as they have extended families. But for the Expat, they can find themselves very alone, which was why the lady went onto Facebook to try and find help. During this period, I was spending much of my
time in the Torrevieja area, building up the offices for my company Jennifer Cunningham Consultants. I put out some feelers about trying to start a charity offering hospice care in the home. The reaction from both individuals and organisations was tremendous and still is. Unfortunately, we have not been able to extend this service further along the coast, as I had always planned to do, for a number of reasons, one of them being the demands on my time. To be able to offer hospice care in the home, obviously we need continual funds. Funding is achieved by three charity shops, a fourth one to be opened in the autumn, a fund raiser and many wonderful volunteers in creating functions and events to support the charity. The commitment shown by PCN nurses as many have already discovered, is tremendous. Not only do the nurses attend the patient, they are also there for the whole family and the only thing we ask is that a funeral plan is arranged, because death is inevitable and this eases the stress, not only on the family but the nurses as well. Obviously to arrange a pre-paid funeral plan for a terminal patient is not easy, but the nurses will be able to help you through the procedure. Taking responsibility before death happens is a very loving and supportive gesture. It also saves calling a nurse out in the middle of the night requesting help with making arrangements for the funeral. This is not the UK and the culture and language is very different here, which is difficult for the families in the UK to comprehend. With such excellence from the nurses, there have
25
been many requests, over the last few years for a general nursing service. An assessment is always carried out prior to any treatment by a PCN nurse, and subject to their recommendations, either palliative care is available, along with any necessary equipment, which will all be offered free of charge, or the patient is referred to The Angels Nurses, for general nursing care, for which obviously, there will be a charge. Without this service, which sadly is only in one area, it must be very frightening for the family when they are advised that there is nothing more the hospitals can do for them. However, the two local hospitals, especially Torrevieja Hospital, often contact the charity directly requesting our help. Much to the relief of the hospitals, patients and families, PCN are able to offer support and help after they are discharged. Despite all the hurdles that Spanish bureaucracy and rules have placed in front of the charity, we are managing to survive and I would love to be able to extend the service along the coast. You can therefore understand how the unjust accusations are both hurtful and unacceptable. I just hope that the person who made these derogatory remarks realises how important the charity is for so many people. Perhaps he should spend some time helping to raise funds for the charity rather than condemning it, without knowing the full facts. For anyone who would like to support, organise a fund raising event, or receive assistance from Paul Cunningham Nurses, please contact Diane on 96 679 0363 between 10am and 1pm.

Renunciation of inheritance in Spain. Who, how, why ...? IN SPANISH Law when an heir accepts the inheritance in an ordinary way, they are accepting everything, both good and bad, that means not only all the deceased’s property and assets, but also the deceased’s debts. THUS, IT is possible for the heir, when debts are higher than the value of the assets or inheritance/ estate, to renounce or reject the inheritance, (I think it is also known in English as disclaimer of interest). Unfortunately, this is becoming more common as a result of the economic crisis. According to the General Council of Spanish Notaries, waivers and renunciations of inheritance in Spain have doubled since 2007. If you want to renounce an inheritance in Spain, you should know that according to Spanish Law, the waiver must be total, it cannot be partial, i.e. you cannot renounce only part of the inheritance. Furthermore, according to Article 1008 of the Spanish Civil Code, the repudiation of the inheritance shall be in a public or authenticated
document (instrument) or in an application submitted to the competent court to decide on the succession. Therefore, if you want to renounce or repudiate an inheritance, you must do it expressly and usually in a public document granted before a public notary. If you do not live in Spain and you want to repudiate a Spanish inheritance, you can do it before a Public Notary in your country, or in front of the Spanish Consulate in your country, because the consul or authorized person has notarial faculties. It is very important that you know that the renunciation is irrevocable as per Spanish Law, therefore, once it is done, you cannot change your mind, unless there is an error, or a new Will appears, etc. From a fiscal or tax point of view, it is very important to note that if a person
renounces an inheritance in a pure and simple way, in principle, they will not have inheritance tax to be paid. But if you renounce in favor of a person, it would be taxed twice, first, it would be the inheritance tax which corresponds to the person who renounces, and second, the beneficiary of the waiver will pay Gift Tax for the value of what they are receiving. Therefore, before giving up an inheritance in favor of someone else, the tax implications must be considered. Sometimes a renunciation could be

tax convenient. For example, if the testator in a will leaves everything to the spouse, and indicates in the will that if the spouse is not able to inherit for whatever reason, such as if the spouse wants the property to go directly to the children, they could renounce said inheritance and probate rights in a pure and simple way, meaning that the children would inherit directly. Mine was consumed, how about yours? A COUPLE of years ago my Bank was taken over by La Caixa. To be honest, this was one of the easiest changes I have had to deal with in Spain and therefore, in this regard I was lucky.
ESPECIALLY AS the previous bank took 6 months to assess a loan application I had made, to finally arrive at a negative answer. By the time I’d got that answer I’d already made 5 repayments to an obliging bank. ‘Opeless. We have seen many banks be swallowed up here in Spain since the crisis and I will remind you, the Spanish banking industry was seen as a fine example at the beginning of the crisis in 2008, because its purposeful structure should have prevented contagion (spreading or transfer of problems of a systemic nature). Instead, individual institutions took the risk rather than having it spread throughout the industry and that is why some 7 years later we are still seeing takeovers of failed
banking businesses. Time has dictated that may be it wasn’t such a shining light. DO WHAT? This week it was announced that Barclays Banks across Europe have decided that unless a customer has at least £100,000 in their account they will be asked to close it. My thoughts are this: How disgusting to get you on board initially and then change the criteria so that you must leave. What a cheek and what an inconvenience ! Who would put such a large amount of cash with one institution with such a patchy reputation, anyway? BAD This week I have taken on an 80 year old client
who had an investment in a Spanish bank and they were told that they could release their invested funds with out charge. Not only were they invested 50% equities for a very cautious client (this is far too volatile), but that were charged Euro 3K in various forms to release it on just a Sterling 20,000 investment. To be fair, the name of the bank does have the word “bad” in it. The Clients are now safely under Blacktower’s wing. The pain in Spain falls mainly on... the British Spanish government begins paying out after thousands of Britons with holiday homes were wrongly hit by “discriminatory” Inheritance Tax charge British holiday homeowners were taxed up to a third of their property’s value when inheriting, yet residents paid almost nothing Spanish authorities now forced to reimburse millions in overpaid tax following a landmark ruling by the European Court of Justice Barcelona, 25th July 2015 – The Spanish government has started to repay millions of Euros to British holiday homeowners who were hit with punitive Inheritance Tax charges. The tax charge – which in many cases was as much as a third of the property’s value – has been levied on up to 30,000 Britons inheriting a holiday home in Spain, according to research by the Spanish solicitors Spanish Legal Reclaims. The Spanish government has now hastily changed its Inheritance Tax law after the European Court of Justice ruled the legislation which exempted residents from the charge - was discriminatory. Under the law, Spanish residents were exempted from up to 99% of the tax charge, while homeowners living abroad had to pay the full amount within six months of inheriting. With more Britons owning holiday homes in Spain than any other nationality, UK citizens were disproportionately affected. The average repayment is €25,000, according to Spanish Legal Reclaims, a Barcelona-based law firm which specialises in helping non-residents to reclaim overpaid tax.
Luis Cuervo, CEO of Spanish Legal Reclaims, comments: “Losing a loved one is hard enough, but to then receive an unfair tax bill rubs salt in the wound. Yet for years this is what happened to thousands of Britons inheriting holiday homes in Spain. “Spain’s authorities have agreed that non-residents who inherited a Spanish property during the past four and a half years can claim back the tax they paid – but doing so is a complex and daunting task, as there is no single form to fill in. “Inheritors can only claim once and there are time limits for claiming, so it’s essential they seek expert legal advice to ensure they get it right first time. “Spanish Legal Reclaims is representing hundreds of families from across the EU who find themselves in this position, and since the ECJ’s landmark ruling our firm has had a 100% success rate, securing a full refund of tax in every case.” For more information about claiming back your inheritance tax contact Donna Knight, Spanish Legal Reclaims. Tel Spain: (0034) 936 804 563, UK: 0845 680 3849 Email: info@spanishlegalreclaims.com www.spanishlegalreclaims.com Sources A study of Spanish Government data by Spanish Legal Reclaims shows that between 2011 and 2014, almost 30,000 UK citizens paid Inheritance Tax on Spanish property. The tax was levied on all non-residents, which Spanish law defines as those who live in Spain for less that half the year. The tax can only be reclaimed by EU citizens.
About Spanish Legal Reclaims Spanish Legal Reclaims S.L. is a law firm specialising in legal reclaims from the Spanish tax authorities. Founded in 2011, its legal team are experts in Spanish and European tax law, and act on behalf of clients from across the EU. It offers its services on a “no win, no fee” basis to nonresidents of Spain who have paid Inheritance Tax on a Spanish property. It currently has a 100% success rate, with all clients receiving a tax refund (plus interest) within six to eight months of making a claim.

Save water for the garden! by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
TWO WEEKS ago the front page headline of RTN was SAVE WATER! THIS ARTICLE was timely and interesting but it only just touched on what we can all do to save more water for helping our precious gardens not only survive but thrive during the hottest days and weeks. Two years ago I wrote the inexpensive small book entitled ‘ HOW TO USE LESS WATER IN YOUR GARDEN’ in English and ‘ COMO USAR MENOS AQUA EN TU JARDIN’ in Spanish. Costing less than five euros from Amazon Books they are currently selling well. The books include some 300 practical ideas for gardens and houses of all sizes ranging from a consideration of the types of garden design that are thirsty and those that can withstand droughts well, to practical day to day gardening practices and if about to build a new house or swimming pool the building of rainwater storage tanks under the house or terraces including tanks as extensions of the pool covered with attractive wooden decking. Since local councils have as great a problem as persons living in their areas I have sent copies to a number of majors who might be interested in new ideas.
TEN IMMEDIATE ACTIONS FOR REDUCING WATERING NEEDS Clear calcium blockages from poorly dripping jets on irrigation systems. If just a few plants are suffering give them extra water by hand rather than turning up the whole irrigation system and overwatering many plants. Water during the last hour of the day or first hours of darkness. Mulch hard baked soil areas after first loosening the soil with a high quality compost. Mulch containers with two centimetres of ground volcanic ash, grit or pea shingle. Shade vegetable plants. If watering by hose do so deeply every two or three days rather than shallowly every day or twice a day. Use washing up water and the rinse water from washing machines. Blow clean drives and paths instead of washing them down. Don’t do any pruning. Let plants and shrubs widen to give greater shade to surrounding plants and bare soil.
CAN YOU IDENTIFY AN UNUSUAL PLANTS? By the way I have had an unknown plant in the garden for the last two summers. This is illustrated above. It has attractive flowers but the best thing about the plant is the large exotic seed pod shown in the photograph. The plant first appeared on a friend’s farm probably dropped by migratory birds from Africa. If any reader can name the plant please let me know. Three copies of the book mentioned earlier will be sent to the first three readers sending in a correct identification. Please email your ideas to yourgardeninspain@hotmail.com.

Holiday romance My daughter is 18, and has recently come back from a holiday to Turkey. She immediately announced that she has met a Turkish boy, and plans to move there in three months time. She says she can get a job with a holiday company as a representative, and she will live with his parents. Her Dad and I are quite shocked at this, and worried as she hasn’t known this boy longer than a fortnight. We don’t want to come down hard on her and say she cannot go - she is 18 after all, but we don’t know anything about this new life she is planning. Rather than raising objections - you could suggest that you all plan a short trip to Turkey, so that you can meet her boyfriend and his family. Then at least you will know where she is going, and who she is living with. There are many cultural differences in settling down with partners from a different country, and you will need to be reassured that she is prepared for that.

I lost my father a few years ago. He was 91. I was an only child, and we were not close. In fact in later years, we did not see each other much. He never treated me well - constantly criticizing every aspect of my life, and when I was small, always ruled with a rod of iron. When I talk to other people, they seem to have had mostly good experiences with their parents. There was absolutely no affection between me and my father, and a lot of mental torture. So why am I suffering after his death? If anything I think I should feel relieved at his passing. It is possible that you have mixed feelings, and are mourning for the loss of the parent you never had. Whilst you did not get on with your father, you will undoubtedly look back and ask questions about why he was the way he was. I think some counselling sessions could help you come to terms with your situation. Talking to a professional can help you to move past this.

Haunted?
It is the actions of others that are at fault right now, but you would be right in surmising that there is more in this than meets the eye. You’ll get no thanks for interfering but there are limits as to what you have to do to secure you own interests. Blame this fallout on Mercury in trine with Uranus, making mountains out of mere molehills again. Venus conjuncts with Jupiter midweek, and you can truly have it all right now since success, love and luck are only a heartbeat away. This is a time to tune into your innermost soul energy and to balance your desires with the faith and belief that anything is possible; when the Cosmos opens up to you in this very special and inspiring way! Mercury attracts the attention of Kora, dwarf planet of peace and serenity, this week. This is time for something new, and the end of the many conflicts that have bugged you of late. As the bad memories simply fade away you are rewarded with time to work with yourself establishing ground rules that calmly act to prepare you. Someone will have the last word this week, but in time they will realise that they have made a grave mistake in trying to mess with your emotions. That which has hurt you will serve to make you stronger, and you should have no regrets in being yourself. Somebody needs your tender loving care right now but is afraid to approach you. The Sun in Neptune is balancing and rewarding. The strong message is to try again, because times have changed and you are now in a far better place. Looking back you were not yourself when some major decisions were made, and thankfully, this week you will see that despite this things are about to change for the better. You haven’t seen the writing on the wall, or maybe you have but think that being stubborn right now is the resolute way forward. It does you no favours whatsoever, but all is not lost if you learn from the current experience and use it to your advantage. Look for the loophole whilst Mercury guides you and Uranus protects your interests. It takes the love of Planet Venus and the analysis of Pluto to make you see reason. Things aren’t what they used to be, but they could be better if you plough your energies into a project that demands your intelligence to steer it through. Licking your wounds just tells others, above all, that they should give you a wide berth right now There are so many versions of the truth around. If you knew then what you know now then things would never have got this way; but since they have take stock of the situation and walk away with your head held high. You are not running away, but hopefully, since you have learned the hard way this time, you are finally moving on. With Jupiter ensconced with Venus, love is truly in the air, and a recent disconnection thankfully becomes something of the past. You have to love yourself, above all, and this isn’t selfish, it’s self preserving, and it puts you back where you belong this week. Ensure that a future plan really has your backing and full attention too. Ceres connects at the start of a hectic week. Above all check your timings and be prepared for some synchronicity, as your schedule goes to pot but everything seems to work out well regardless. Energies around you should inspire you to ring the many changes you would wish for, and right now they start to become a reality. Mercury seems to be constantly there to make sure that a message is received by you. Quite why somebody is so nervous they are unable to speak to you face to face is uncertain, because they certainly have good news for you. What they have on offer will greatly change your routine and your way of working, if you just say, yes! Finances take a tumble, but as Neptune is bathed in the highest energies of the Sun this week the solution is there for you, somehow, some way. Nevertheless check statements and monitor expenditure, turning your attention towards simple ways of making economies that will help to balance the books and see you safely through.
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
There is something that begs for completion right now, and once this has received your immediate attention you can focus on the pressing imminent wants and needs. This astrological year sees you fine tuning your innermost energies and learning to use them in different and inspiring ways!
IT HAS been a long while since I wrote about psychic energies experienced in the home. There are a great number of haunted homes here on the Costa, and scarcely does a week go by without somebody has a good story to tell me. There are many types of hauntings, and many classifications of lingering Earthbound spirits, who have for a variety of reasons wrongly chosen to inhabit a property. These lingering, grey spectres and wraiths have no business whatsoever to be here on Earth. They are entities, and really do need to be asked to move on, and often it is my business to aid in the process of telling them to sling their hooks! There are three distinct stages in the process of asking entities to go. The first stage is a polite one as the truth must be told to them, and they should be given the option of moving on with the suggestion that if they make their final journey to the Other Side they will be in a far, far better place. Just sometimes this polite and motivated coaxing can and does work. It works especially well with those entities who do not realise that they are dead; but there are those too who are wilfully stubborn and claim utterly that they do know of their demise, but won’t accept it in any way. Such undead as resolute as this need to be asked to move on, but it is obvious that they need to feel that there would be benefits in moving on, or over to the Spirit World, where they truly belong. At this stage it is important to explain that all ghosts live in a different dimension to us here in the present year of 2015. However this means that they move around ( always diagonally!) as if they were still living in older properties from the past. A call from a client earlier this year took me to the the second floor of a very modern block of apartments. In this habitat the errant ghost was repeatedly drowning in the water tank that was on top of the barn that previously occupied the space that was now a chic apartment. In this particular case the drowning was because one of four brothers refused to agree to the sale of his family farm, and he was mysteriously drowned by the remaining three. An old lady living close by was able to substantiate that there was, previously, a farm on the hillside directly on the site of the patio of my client. Unfortunately on this occasion the entity refused to leave politely, sidestepped the more forceful solution to the problem as well, and finally had to be banished by the third stage of exorcism. Such exorcism has been performed by me eight times on the Costa Blanca. Exorcisms are rare but effective, and today I hope to help anyone who needs to take that first step in removing the unwanted. Generally the entities experienced are simple and low grade. They can be cajoled amazingly easily. It is always best if the home owner takes steps themselves to rid their home of the unwanted. It takes faith and a sincere love for spirit, also the reason for the removal of any of the undead has to be for mutual reasons as you will both benefit from it happening. Above all you have to eliminate any fear because, if this is transmitted to the entity, it will stop them believing in your seemingly good intentions and they will not comply with your wishes for them. A malicious spirit, and I have experienced many, will use that element of any fear to dig their heels in and entrench themselves further, making things worse. Cleansing homes is always a good experience, and a chance to uplift the energies of any property. Though the tools of the trade are relatively simple they can bring such success. Re- enforcing domestic energies allows for love and harmony to come back to bless the true heart of such a happy home, bringing resolve and peace from any unwarranted disturbances or interruptions. TO BE CONTINUED...............

KENNY, MY husband has had so many psychic moments in his life, but he still doesn’t understand spiritual matters. What will it take to help him to see how he could use his gift? Keren T. Hi Keren. Your guess here is as good as mine! If he is not ready then we have to wonder why? Possibly he fears his powers, as sadly many people do, or maybe he doesn’t want to be seen as being different? For whatever reason he decides not to explore his talent, tuning into Spirit is not for everyone. I have to accept, and never forget, that most of the World does not believe in the Spirit World; though thankfully, by sheer numbers, opinion is changing. You cannot make anyone believe in something that they choose not to. Hopefully soon, something special will start to steer him in the right direction, and if he asks for help then, at that point, I will do what I can!

Xena: Warrior Princess for me was not one of the better shows from the 90´s. However, once it took on a comic bent, and the suggestion of love interest between the two lead females, viewing figures went on the increase. Xena (Linda Lawless) has been talking-up a re-boot saying “I think the holdup´s about who´s got the rights, but that’s a p*ss-poor excuse, find who´s got the rights, and freakin’ pay it! Don’t you just love her?

50 Cent aint got 50 Cents to rub together
A 40 year old guy called Curtis Jackson, who was born in New York´s South Jamaica neighbourhood, had a colourful life that included, selling crack cocaine when he was 12, having 9 bullets pumped into him in 2000, before wisely changing his name to 50 Cent and taking up a career in music. I said last week how he´d filed for bankruptcy, and he´s here again after some remarkable information was printed by the New York Daily News about his appearance at the Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday 21st July. Filing for bankruptcy is all about establishing you´re outgoings are far in excess of your incomings, and with the Forbes list estimating the rappers fortune to be around $155 million in May, Curtis, I mean 50 Cent, needed to do some slick talking. Oh yes, and as if that’s not enough, he also faces a lawsuit for having posted a sex tape online, for which he is being sued for $5 million. TILT!! Jackson´s lawyer stood up and explained that his man was only worth $4.4 million, meaning the sex tape lawsuit could never be met, and this was followed by 50 Cent himself standing up and saying “although the social-media is filled with flashy photos and stuff in my videos, I take the jewellery and the cars I use back to the stores!” well bless my old cotton socks, would you credit that! All sorts of numbers were then bandied around the courtroom about how much Curtis Jackson is actually worth, but with him saying afterwards “Now I´ve filed for bankruptcy, I’m not as cool as I was last week,” he´s kinda hit the nail in the head.
Quote of “the Week
“
Pippa Middleton has admitted she is a serious fitness freak writing in Waitrose magazine “Exercise can easily be incorporated into your life; all it requires is a change of mentality,” before adding “try indoor climbing, boxing, or letting your inner child out by jumping on a trampoline!” Do what? Indoor climbing? Boxing? She´s having a laugh isn´t she! Won’t the Waitrose magazine show pictures of cream cakes and the like as well?
Looking stunning at 61, Christie Brinkley said on her family yachting holiday “These natural wonders will make you want to protect our ocean waters on this magnificent planet, and inspire dreamers!” The Jeremy Kyle Show has now descended into being the programme everyone loves to mock. Like last week when a guest came on accusing one of her cousins of stealing a personal locket containing a lock of her mum’s hair, but the Twitter trolls were not as interested in the lie detector results as they were in the surprisingly furry jumper the guest was wearing. The Jezza Fights and Furry Jumpers Show!
New book ‘Peter O’Toole: Hellraiser, Sexual Outlaw, Irish Rebel’, is now available, but if you fancy having a read, I suggest you check your pulse rate and sugar levels beforehand. For example the author’s claim O’Toole accepted a $150 bet that he couldn’t sleep with top stars of the time - Jayne Mansfield, Anita Ekberg and Diana Dors, but succeed he did. “There were also week-long binges and sex orgies of near-biblical proportions! “ Quote – Unquote. Holy Moly!
Music Notes
Ed Sheeran is a man who can pop up anywhere anytime! One of his favs is to do impromptu gigs and has done so in several pubs and clubs. He was at it again last Friday when he appeared at the Latitude Festival and sung a few toons. Also last week he helped friend Jake Roche propose to his girlfriend Jesy Nelson. He´s my new hero! Proud of her dad, Seattle teenager Maggie Poukkala decided to send all her Twitter friends see some pics of him when he was younger playing in a band. She knew her dad was playing with Kurt Cobain, but she had no idea the pics were from Nirvana´s first ever gig. Magazine Rolling Stone called, and Maggie had her 15 minutes of fame.

Tablet problems
Hi aunty, l have recently had to replace the memory card in my Samsung tablet so lost all my photos. Can you tell me how I back such things up on a tablet? Secondly I keep getting messages saying I need to update my browser especially on my online banking sites. I have Internet Explorer at the moment which is what was installed when I got it. So what do you recommend I do? Thanks, Margaret Aunty says: A few ways to back up documents and images on a tablet. One is to have a “back up” SD memory card. Simply back up your documents and images onto another SD memory card and keep it safe. Alternatively you can use a “cloud” base storage system. With Dropbox you can upload documents and images to your Dropbox account for storage. The best thing about this is you can then access them on any device where you can access Dropbox. Re internet browser. If you are using Windows XP, and Internet Explorer, well Microsoft no longer support this operating system or browser. And as part of your banks security, they are warning you of this, and that it may not be totally secure. But you can always use other internet browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox or Opera.
Skype history Hi Aunty, to clear history on Skype I used to (when on Skype) go to tools, then click options, then privacy, then advanced then clear history then click delete. Now when I click on advanced there is no heading clear history. Your advice please, Many thanks, Ray Aunty says: Your process is correct. But perhaps you have missed where it is. And on my screen (and a few others that I have tried) i see a bold “keep history for” in the middle of the screen. It has a drop down box for you to choose how long you want to keep history for, and just to the right is a “Clear History” button.

Introduction to past continuous tense
AFTER A long digression away from verbs whilst we investigated all sorts of other aspects of the Spanish language, I’ve decided it’s time to come back to that wonderful subject again. In previous articles we investigated the use of the infinitive of the verb in sentences, (e.g. comer - “voy a comer” – I’m going to eat) and also looked at the gerund or present participle (e.g. comiendo – “estoy comiendo” – I am eating), and the past participle (e.g. comido - “he comido” – I have eaten). We then went on to spend quite a long time looking at what happens to verbs in the present simple tense (e.g. “como, comes, come” – I eat, you eat, he eats etc.) This latter present tense is the one that a lot of people find themselves learning first of all, and yet it is quite a bit more difficult and also to some extent less immediately useful than the first three tense we have learnt. What we are now going to do is take a look at one of the past tenses, and in true Cronin style we’ll make sure it’s the easiest one, and also we’ll see exactly when we are supposed to use it. No point in rushing ahead, and especially not rushing head-long in the things that can get
us into a muddle. So, the tense we are going to look at is called the “past continuous tense”, some people call it the “imperfect tense” and in Spanish it is called the “imperfecto”. It is a tense that we use when we want to express a state or an action that lasts for a period of time in the past. Sometimes, (but far from always) we can translate it with “used to”, and this might give us a clue as its basic meaning. “When I was a child I played (or I used to play) in the park every day” – “Cuando yo era niña, jugaba en el parque todos los días”. The other main use of this tense is express descriptions in the past – that is background scenes, situations or people. For example: “Mi tío era un hombre alto y tenía el pelo canoso y corto” (My uncle was a tall man and he had short grey hair) “El día de mi cumpleaños el sol brillaba todo el día” (On my birthday the sun shone (or was shining) all

day”. For this reason we could also (if we wished) call it the “past descriptive tense” and as these description in the past account for a large proportion of its use. Looking back at these sentences, here are the past continuous verbs we have used: “era” from the verb “ser”, “jugaba” from the verb “jugar”, “tenía” from the verb “tener”, “brillaba” from the verb “brillar” to shine. In all of the sentences we are focusing on a period of state rather than a single or completed action. For us as English speakers the main difficulty of this tense lies in the translation, in that there is not always just one way to express same idea in English. The actual concept behind the tense is pretty straightforward and, best of all, the way the tense is formed is really very easy; in fact it’s about the easiest tense of the whole lot. You’ll have to take my word for all of that though until next week. I hope you can wait that long.

Charity begins at home ONE OF Benidorm’s well known performers, Emma Louise, who most will know from “One Vision” has appealed for help from the community that she herself has often helped. by Jeanette Rice EMMA’S SISTER, Lynsey aged 38, was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer which was treated well but she has now been told that she has secondary cancer and has been advised that it is unlikely that traditional treatment will have any affect, giving her months not years to live. There are alternative treatments that have worked for people all over the world but these are not available on the NHS due to cost. So, in true Benidorm style many of Emma’s friends who are also Benidorm performers are gathering together on Sunday 2nd August to raise funds for Lynsey’s treatment. From 2pm at the Talk of the Coast guests will be able to see Benidorm at its best with tribute acts including Sister Act, One Vision, The Rat Pack, Queen, Meat Loaf, Lady Gaga, Abba, Timeless and many more performing for just a 3€ entrance fee. Throughout the afternoon there will be a raffle, with prizes donated from the very generous local businesses and the compere for the four hours will be Chunky B. Emma said “It is a line up of the top entertainment in Benidorm, under one roof for one show, entertaining the guests whilst raising money for Lynsey”. Anyone who is unable to attend on the day but would like to donate can do so via Paypal, the address is lifeline4lynsey@gmail.com.
The Virgen del Rocio festival FOR SOMETHING very Spanish to do in Torrevieja, starting tomorrow, Saturday 1st August and future Saturdays through August, the festival of the Hermitage of the Virgen del Rocio starts. On Saturday 1st August, the Virgen del Rocio Brotherhood will hold an open day for the people of Torrevieja and also for those interested in White Doves, who will be coming to see the development of what will be the future Ermita. This is gradually being built in the Park of Europe and will soon be a reality Throughout the afternoon and evening, you can visit the site and see for yourself the improvements made over the last year. From 8.30pm they will also hold a dinner with snacks, sandwiches, soft drinks, etc. at reasonable prices. There are many other activities taking place for everyone who wishes to attend, spending a day together and enjoying the festivity among all the friends and devotees of the Virgin del Rocio, ending with the singing of the Salve Rociera. Last year these activities were extended to every Saturday in August which this year expands one day, from four to five. It’s a fun evening out and an opportunity for International residents to get a feeling of another side of Spanish life.

Craic on!
By Jack Troughton EVERGREEN CELTIC band The ShamRockers promise a night to remember this evening (31st July) at Bar Emilio in La Llosa – the village between Pedregeur and Alcalali. The band is on stage from 9pm at the refurbished bar that enjoys a reputation for great live music. The popular ShamRockers operate a simple ‘scientific’ formula – the band’s mix of rock, pop, and Celtic music equals the mysterious ‘craic’. And frontman Irish Des said: “This is always a great venue and it will be great to catch up with all our friends from this area – a warm welcome awaits everyone, so come along and enjoy the fun.”

The Blues Brothers Experience THE BLUES Brothers Experience - Benidorm, are fast becoming Benidorm’s most popular act. Indeed they are accumulating a fan base throughout the Costa Blanca. The Blues Brothers are, Derek Blevins (55) (who performs solo as Dickie Ray), and David Young (28) plus Tracy from Essex who is the third member of the team. She works tirelessly in the background, not only managing and promoting the show, but also on occasions makes an appearance on stage in the role of Sister Mary. All the rules governing a traditional Blues Brothers tribute have been thrown out. The idea was to capture the essence of the much loved characters Jake and Elwood Blues and apply their “couldn´t care less” attitude to create a completely new show. Yes the old favourites such as Rawhide and Everybody Needs Somebody are still there, but there are always surprises, as the audience are encouraged to be part of the show. Not just watch it. It’s not a show, it’s a party. The show is loved by all ages from very young kids to grandparents. Match Trio
“MATCH” ARE a trio with: Job Netten, (guitar/vocals), Jolande Siffels, (lead vocals) and Paul van Velzen (drums). Their repertoire consists of songs from now and then, in the style of pop and easy-jazz. The history of Match goes back to 1977, when a band called “Lucifer”, who had hits and a golden album, split up because the leading-lady-singer went solo. The rest of the band continued under the name “Match” and played for many years in Holland, Belgium and Germany.
Job Netten immigrated in 2010 with his wife Jolande Siffels to Benissa. This is where they met drummer Paul van Velzen and now they’re playing as a trio. Itching And Scratching?
ITCHY SKIN can drive you crazy! We all have an occasional itch but regular itching needs to be investigated. Most causes of itching (pruritis) are not serious and easily treated, but, sometimes itching can be caused by more serious conditions such as liver disease or even cancers. Itchy skin may appear normal or it may be red and raised, bumpy, rough or have visible spots or blisters. Resisting the temptation to scratch is very hard but it should be avoided as Scratching can make you end up in an itch-scratch cycle, damage your skin and cause infection and scarring. When to see a doctor: Itching skin that lasts for more than 2 weeks Itching that affects the whole body Other symptoms accompany the rash, such as fever, weight loss. bowel or bladder problems or fatigue and tiredness Severe itching that keeps you awake or makes daily life like work or school difficult Rash covering the whole body Causes of itching may include: Dry skin, medically known as xerosis. Often dry skin is a result of excessive bathing or showering, Air conditioning/central heating, or a dry atmosphere Pregnancy. The abdomen, breasts, arms and thighs can become itchy during pregnancy and existing skin conditions may become worse Many common skin conditions such as eczema, shingles, dermatitis, chickenpox etc. Allergies and irritants. Food, chemicals, cosmetics, soap, wool and many other items can cause irritation or allergies Drug reactions. Medications may cause skin itching and rashes
Other illnesses. Itching can be a result of other diseases such as thyroid disorders,. anaemia, coeliac disease, multiple sclerosis, liver and kidney disorders or leukaemia and lymphomas It is obviously important to see your family doctor to find out the cause of your itch but here are some tips that may help with some cases of pruritis: Keep skin well moisturised using good quality unscented products Ask your pharmacist about creams to help stop itching. These products are often steroid based and for short term use only. Other products are calamine, menthol and camphor Try local anaesthetics such as lidocaine or benzocaine. NOTE: These can have serious side effects so do not use on small children and make sure you are fully informed by a pharmacist or doctor before using such products Try not to scratch. (Easy to say I know!) Wear pyjamas, keep fingernails short and to avoid scratching in your sleep, consider wearing cotton gloves, even if you do look silly! Take cool baths and apply a cold compress such as a clean cloth soaked in cool water Use oatmeal or baking soda in a lukewarm bath. There are oatmeal products available specifically for bathing Use mild detergents to wash laundry and make sure laundry is thoroughly rinsed Use mild un-perfumed soap, shower gels etc. Wear loose fitting clothing and avoid synthetic fabrics Avoid allergens. Avoid anything that irritates you skin or causes allergic reactions!

Torrevieja CC 120 for 6 Sporting Alfas 2nd 87 for 10 SPORTING ALFAS travelled down the N332 to meet Torrevieja in an attempt to strengthen their chance of being league champions. HAVING WON the toss they put Torrevieja in to bat. After 10 overs, and an unpredictable wicket, Torrevieja had reached 34 without loss. Alfas changed the bowling and Basrat Ali came on to take a wicket with his first ball, Grant Meekins going for 7. Runs then became difficult to come by with Basrat Ali taking 3 wickets for 11 runs and Andy Dell taking 1 for 5. For Torrevieja Chris Darwen scored 34 not out, Kieren Wood 25, Mike Wareing 16 and captain Leigh Blann 13 enabling a total of 120 of their allocated 40 overs. Torrevieja then came on to field and their enthusiasm resulted in Alfas losing their first wicket with only 4 runs on the board. No-one really got going with the bat , only Wadjit Abdul (18 )and captain Mark Perman ( 29 not out ) reaching double figures. With some excellent fielding and again the unpredictable wicket, Alfas were all out for 87. Pick of the bowlers, Ciaran Guichard ( 4 for 21) Hasan Ullah ( 3 for 10 ) and Michael Wareing ( 1 for 9 ) .Torrevieja 24 points, Alfas 4 points should move Torrevieja up the table. Sucina Golf Society
33 PLAYERS turned out for the annual event of competing for the ´Franc y Louise´ Cup (the society home base in Sucina), which was held at Hacienda Riquelme. Again this month, another very hot & humid day, with nearly all players opting for a buggy. An individual stableford competition with additional team prizes, choosing ´best 2 scores to count¨ Steve James picked up the trophy for winning the F & L Cup with a fantastic 44 points ( Steve can be seen receiving his trophy from our Captain & Handicap Secretary). Everything went well for Steve on the day - scissors will be out by our Handicap Secretary! On the whole some good scores were returned, despite the heat of the day. The course was in excellent condition but the bunkers could have been better. The Captain experiencing several of them! Presentation of the prizes was held back at home base in Sucina, and there was a good turn out of Members to congratulate the winners on the day, plus enjoying the sandwiches laid on for the players by Maureen Harris. Very much appreciated by all. Winner of the F & L Cup & Division One - Steve James with 44 points Division 2 - Geoff Hallett (on count back)- 34 points and Division 3 - Gary Smith (on count back)- 35 points. life&leisure focus on golf
Don’t look at the ball! ARE YOU kidding me? This flies in the face of everything I have learned about playing golf.
By Tony Myles IF YOU cast your mind back to the early days of your golfing endeavours you will recall the often irresistible urge to lift your head as the club comes through and look for the ball as it sails towards the target, only to find that your ball has remained close to where you placed it. “Ah you lifted your head!” is the cry from your colleagues. So it became the main tenet of golf. The Golden Rule. Keep your head still otherwise you are doomed to failure. Now along comes this whippersnapper, who just happens to be a child genius, and he is moving his head every time he lines up a putt. He looks at the hole - looks at his ball looks back at the hole and sinks the putt. And it works consistently. So this is not just some attention seeking ex-pro trying to be a bit controversial, it is a young man who has a string of victories to his credit and he is not yet 21. Jordan Spieth has turned the world of golf on its head. If the concept of ignoring the ball and looking at the hole as you putt had been proposed by anyone other than Jordan, it would have been met with scepticism and possibly derision. But how can you argue with success? And furthermore he is not preaching this as the way forward or even suggesting that it is better than the more regular method, he is simply employing it and to extremely good effect. He is now collecting advocates who have found that this method does actually improve their putting statistics. Including our Campbell Lamont. According to Campbell the weakest part of his game has always been on the green and over the years he has been influenced by Sergio Garcia and by a regular visitor to La Sella, Jose Maria Olazabal. The result was Campbell’s adoption of the Claw Grip which produced a significant improvement and now, with the Jordan Spieth method, Campbell is sinking them from all over the green. WHY DOES IT WORK? The guys who should know the answer to that question are less than clear about it. There is a general feeling that by releasing the eyes from staring fixedly at the ball the pressure is also taken away from adhering to a strict routine. There is less tension in the grip. The club flows more evenly through the ball, largely because you can’t see it. Because it works there are now legions of golfers who are struggling to move their eyes away from the ball and trust to their instincts. I wonder if this means that darts players who always look at the target, would be good putters?
head 2 head
Mood Tony M - Do you have any mascots that you take with you when playing golf? Campbell - You mean like good luck tokens? Tony M - Yes that kind of thing. Campbell - No, but I know some golfers who do. Tony M - Me too. I used to know a chap who had one of those mood rings until he lost it. I asked him how he felt about that. Campbell - I know I am going to regret this but, what did he say? Tony M - He said he didn’t know.

Volvo V40 D3 R-Design LASER RADAR: It sounds like something from a sci-fi thriller but we’re actually talking about technology fitted to Volvo cars, those traditionally staid and dull vehicles, favoured by the ‘flat cap brigade’. Today’s hip and trendy Volvos are anything but and are packed with sophisticated technology that keeps the brand at the forefront of car design and manufacture. Its laser radar systems are a key ingredient. I’m testing the V40 D3 R-Design, a performance five door hatchback. And it’s fitted with an intelligent yet simple to operate cruise control. As you might expect this keeps the car travelling at the desired speed but unlike most systems it also measures the distance of the car in front. This ensures that it keeps the Volvo at a safe distance behind. It does this by automatically braking and accelerating thanks to the information relayed by its clever laser radar. This distance can be changed from reasonably close to quite far away depending on driving conditions. In theory this is a valuable tool that should mean that the driver can relax. Not so though. My test takes place in torrential downpours and high winds and I discover that the radar is not infallible. This becomes particularly noticeable while at 70mph round a bend on a dual carriageway. The Volvo is in the outside lane but on approaching the bend there is a car on the inside and the radar picks this up and brakes abruptly despite there being no cars in front of me. This annoys me and I cancel the function. On another occasion we are on a straight road and high winds cause a flashing red warning bar on the driver’s side of the dashboard to light up – accompanied by a really loud beep for absolutely no reason whatsoever. My sleeping children wake up. High side winds seem to completely throw the radar and despite there being no traffic in front the Volvo brakes sharply from 70mph to 50mph. That said this cruise control is quite impressive when you bear in mind that it can be set at say 50mph and if a sharp incline appears the resulting gear change does not cancel out the cruise control. Often this is the case in many other vehicles. Another safety feature is the Blind Spot Information System. There’s a little light on the inside of the wing mirror that glows red whenever a vehicle appears in the blind spot. This is useful because the design is prone to blind spots especially at the rear making it a little awkward to reverse but there are helpful sensors fitted that bleep to alert the driver of nearby obstacles.
