Alteaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Portosenso project goes bust by Jeanette Rice THE ALTEA local government have removed the licence for the company running the commercial development as they have gone bankrupt. Portosenso was predicted to be one of the most impressive residential projects for the area with the company Zontoga SA being awarded the contract to transform it from plans on paper into an exclusive urbanisation with 300 houses, a hotel and an additional 100 berths in the marina area. The project has been fraught with claims of misconduct, as in January the previous town hall ruling party had to suspend the licence for the project after landowners complained that the building infringed certain laws. The first phase of Portosenso, called Sea and Mountain II, was designed by a renowned Valencian architect, Jean Nouvel, and created much excitement for the area. However, ten years on this phase has only just been finished. The removal of the licence was approved at last Thursdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council meeting with all parties in agreement although the developer had warned the council back in January that they were experiencing problems and again in April when they were unable to carry out the works still pending on the project. The councillor for Urbanism stated that the company

1.11 million euros bill for Benidorm

BENIDORM HAS agreed to pay its outstanding debt to the company that operates the refuge plant in El Campello a debt which has remained unpaid from 2012. The town council voted on Monday to make the payment which had been delayed for the past two terms, partly due to economic difficulties. The company responsible for the waste treatment being sent to the El Campello plant, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) have been waiting for this payment since their 12% increase in dumping fees was accepted in 2012 by the then town council members. A spokesperson for the local government said that although the whole amount has not been budgeted for in its entirety there is a proportion of the 1.1 billion euros set to one side and no loan will be necessary to pay the remainder.

THE SPANISH press have begun defending Benidorm following the recent British media’s “anti Benidorm campaign”.

ONE NATIONAL newspaper in the UK seems to have taken it upon themselves to constantly have a go at the popular resort and now ABC, a Spanish national daily newspaper which is the third largest in Spain and very well respected, since it was first published in 1903, has included Benidorm in its society pages as a town constantly reinventing itself with huge success.

The popular Spanish newspaper takes you through a journey from the 1950’s when the town first became popular with overseas visitors when it was just a small fishing village. Promoting the fact that the resort is open 365 days a year it states that Benidorm is “the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca and possibly the entire Mediterranean”. A complete contrast to what the British media are trying to portray with heaving beaches and expensive hotels and poor services. Those that live here know that the area is blessed with a privileged climate due to its geographical position and that the area caters for not only tourists but also residents with nationalities including Spanish, English, Norwegian, Russian, German and Dutch being served well. ABC are keen to point out that Benidorm has something for all budgets and ages from water parks and theme parks for the younger ones to mini gyms and garden areas for the more senior visitors, as well as accommodations that can cater for all requirements. The newspaper said “it is precisely this, the facilities, that underpin the success of the town, with establishments not only being the most modern in Europe but also worldwide”. Benidorm has been allocated in recent years 600 million euros for restructuring and by the end of this year 95% of that will have been completed. The president of Hosbec (the Hotel Association of Benidorm and the Costa Blanca), Toni Mayor said “the results of the funding is that we have brand new facilities and have adapted to modern needs whereas other towns have not”. A completely different story has recently been portrayed to readers back in the UK and around the world whilst ABC are taking a positive approach to the resort and its amazing capacity to accept an increase in population during the summer months of up to 500%, the UK report that service is “sloppy”. Calling it “swell ability” the Spanish paper said that although there were many skyscrapers the town had maintained a feeling of space and was very able to cope with such increased numbers whilst also ensuring that it’s visitors did not experience a drop in services.

George Cole 1925 – 2015

ANOTHER WELL loved actor, George Cole, died on Wednesday at the age of 90. George who was welcomed into millions of homes on the television was best known for playing Arthur Daley in the programme Minder from 1979 through until 1994. He died at the Royal Berkshire hospital following a short illness. His agent said “it is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad death of one of our most loved and respected actors”. Cole, who was made an OBE in 1992, married his second wife Penny in 1967, both Penny and his son, Toby, were at his bedside until the end.

Bungee death manslaughter investigation by Jeanette Rice FOLLOWING THE death of British Kleyo De Abreu, aged 23 in Granada a few weeks ago an investigation has found that the company was negligent. The conclusion of the investigation was that Kleyo was allowed to jump from the bridge before her ropes had been properly tightened. The Guardia Civil informed a court that the monitor responsible for checking the ropes and the owner of ActivitiSport should be investigated for manslaughter following their findings. It was discovered that only one monitor was present with 14 jumpers that day and that insufficient care was taken to ensure everyone was aware of the safety procedures. A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said that the incident showed “recklessness firstly for their only being one monitor and secondly that all the jumpers should have been informed in a clearer fashion of the safety measures”.

Spanish jihadist suspect arrested A MOROCCAN national, who lived in Spain has been arrested in Germany following a Spanish court issuing an arrest warrant. The man, who was detained in Stuttgart on Tuesday, had been active in illegal activities relating to terrorism. In a statement the Spanish ministry said “he has been very active on social networking sites, promoting the recruitment and benefits of joining Islamic State fighters, as well as expressing his intentions to travel to Syria and join the group”. Spanish police originally raided properties on the island of Lanzarote but the man managed to escape the officers. A woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of recruiting young women and teenagers to travel to Syria. Spain has been extremely active in recent months following the increase of the terror alert in June of this year, carrying out numerous raids on suspected jihadists and their supporters. The Spanish government figures show that at least 116 nationals have left the country to join the fighters, which is lower than other European countries but as all European governments fear that these people may return to mount attacks on their home soil a combined information sharing system seems to have been effective in this case.

Brawl arrests

FOUR MEN were arrested in the early hours of Saturday following a fight in the nightclub area of the town. The National Police attended the scene where they found an 18 year old who had been assaulted and had sustained two wounds to their head. The attack broke out after the 18 year old collided with one of the men inside a popular nightclub. The four men were found to have metal knuckle dusters, wooden sticks and a knife in their possession although they had tried to hide the items under a parked car. The victim was treated at the Foietes health centre as the detainees, who had no criminal records in Spain, were charged at the police station.

A game of musical chairs in Benidorm LOCAL CAFES and bars in Benidorm began receiving inspections at the beginning of the week, where council employees counted tables and chairs.

by Jeanette Rice Each establishment has certain seating limits that it must comply with and the Department of Trade and Urban scene began an information campaign last Wednesday to remind businesses of the importance of the rules and standards, prior to the upcoming inspections. Calle Alameda was the first to receive the official visitors followed by Calle Gerona and Calle Lepanto. On Calle Alameda, one of the bigger areas for visitors to sit and enjoy the outside whilst using one of the many cafés or bars, the inspectors counted every table and chair for each establishment. The councillor for Commerce, Ana Pellicar and Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, councillor for Urban Scene instigated the municipal inspections stating that it was to “ensure all were abiding by the rules”. It is a complex procedure as each business can use the street but it is dependant on the metres available and if another similar establishment is opposite them. One affected businesses found that although this was their busiest period they had be forced to reduce their three lines of tables down to two. The owner stated “this is counterproductive for all the traders and as a result of my inspection yesterday I have had to lay six staff members off, because I now have less tables to serve”. As with everything there are always two sides to a situation and the town hall has recently received complaints from its citizens that as the summer had arrived it was becoming increasingly difficult to move around the streets because of the number of tables and chairs. Although the inspections will be ongoing some bar owners have complained that not everyone is sticking to the rules and the inspectors cannot be everywhere at all times. For the first week of the enforcement establishments have been cautioned where they were found to have excessive seating areas, with Snr Zarate saying ”we have been looking for dialogue and consensus, but will enforce fines where necessary”. Fines vary between 1,200 and 1,500 euros, something that many bar/cafe owners would struggle to pay and as councillors walk the streets in the evenings checking Snr Zante hopes that no fines will be necessary.

Moroccan dies trying to get to Spain

by Jeanette Rice A MOROCCAN man died over the weekend trying to get into Spain in a suitcase the same day as four immigrants drowned trying to swim to Ceuta, a Spanish territory. Whilst the British media is focused on the troubles that are ongoing in Calais as migrants desperately try to get into the UK, Spain is experiencing its own border issues, although most that get through will probably continue their journey up to Calais. The Moroccan man, aged 27, suffocated in a suitcase that was found in the boot of a car that his brother was driving on a ferry crossing from the Spanish

enclave of Melilla heading for Almeria. A spokesperson for the Interior ministry, Francisco Jerez, said “a 27 year old man was found on Sunday after his brother sought medical help for him just before the ferry arrived in the southern Spanish port”. The brother, also Moroccan but with a French passport was arrested by the Guardia Civil and detained. As thousands of migrants from Morocco try to get into the European Union illegally through Spain the two Spanish enclaves, Melilla and Ceuta have a heavy Guardia presence.

Morocco’s Interior Ministry said that on the same day four migrants from subSaharan Africa had drowned attempting to swim around a fence erected from the mainland to Ceuta. The Moroccan navy rescued three others as the Spanish authorities came under increasing pressure from human rights groups who denounce the heavy handedness of the Spanish police at the two enclaves. Last year 15 migrants died trying to reach Ceuta by sea and the Spanish authorities rescued 3,500 migrants sailing in home made boats, an increase of 55 % from 2013.

80% of moscatel lost in drought FARMERS of moscatel in the area have lost 80% of their wine grapes because of the heatwave. The farmers in Teulada, Benissa and other local towns have requested that the municipality declare a drought disaster area. The damage to particularly the moscatel grape has resulted in the local farmers suffering losses in their crops with no prospect of an income to help cover their costs and the costs of their workers. Some farmers are talking of having to abandon their plantations if their financial situation continues to decline. The president of ASAJA Alicante-Young Farmers Eladio Aniorte said “producers need urgent help with this the third consecutive year of drought, many of the dry muscat grapes are in danger of disappearing unless urgent measures are taken, this is one of our most valued and important grapes used in white and sparkling wines throughout the region”. Farmers who have insurance to cover the costs of their businesses are finding that the agricultural cover does not allow for payments due to drought. The group of producers from Teulada, Benissa and surrounding towns are asking for specific help, with the support of ASAJA, including exemption from real property tax for the year 2015, reduced income tax rates, 50% payment of social security contributions for the year and subsidised interest rates for those requiring loans. Teulada currently has 705 hectares of the moscatel grape, Benissa has 597 hectares with the region as a whole having 2,272 hectares.

Front line of Poniente

Benidorm appeal front line building changes by Jeanette Rice THE LEVANTE and Poniente front line properties face having to make changes if the Benidorm council do not win their appeal. Lourdes Caselles, councillor for planning in Benidorm, announced on Tuesday that the town intends to file an administrative appeal against the proposals by the Directorate General of Coasts where boundary lines are set for change. The new demarcation line that the Directorate want to impose affects over 3,000 properties (apartments, hotels, and businesses) as well as some of the front line roads and the promenade. The councillor pointed out that the new boundary changes under “the concept of maritime shore,” where the receding shoreline meant that distances from the measured points would change and that the Directorate had also changed where they took their measurements from, had put the threatened buildings into the Di-

rectorate General of Coasts jurisdiction but that this was impractical. Hosbec, the hotel employer is supporting the council all the way, with some of the changes being required totally impractical and obviously having serve financial implications for all those involved. Lourdes Caselles said “there are buildings that cannot possibly change their balconies, not only because aesthetically it would look poor but also there would be major safety issues. The changes would also affect the streets of Alcoy and Madrid where if approved the council would have to ask permission from the Directorate should they need to change a street light bulb. Part of Benidorm’s appeal will be presented in a meeting between the Directorate, the Ministry of Environment and the towns representatives to show the “reality” of the situation.

Altea road restructuring

ALTEA COUNCIL is removing a section of their cycle path for safety reasons. The cycle path that runs by the old slaughter house to the intersection of the Algar River bridge is being removed to ensure the safety of pedestrians using the area. The councillor for Traffic and Public Safety said “we want to give free access to those who want to go to the beach, bar or homes in the area without them having to leave the N332”. Other changes will include a reduction in the speed limit to 20km and restrictions to make parts of the Algar River area for residents access only.

Excalibur evacuation ON SATURDAY a fire broke out at the Magic Excalibur camping site causing 200 visitors to be evacuated. by Jeanette Rice AT APPROXIMATELY 1.30pm on Saturday black smoke began billowing into the clear blue sky and could be seen for miles as emergency services rushed to the scene at the Excalibur camping site on the old N332 between Albir and Benidorm. The fire, which had started in the reception area is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in the cooling tower, although this has yet to be confirmed, as an official investigation was launched by the fire service. Two people were slightly injured, a fire fighter and one of the guests, although the local police were keen to point out that these were very minor injuries. The fire fighter having a cut to his hand and the guest suffering minor cuts from falling during the evacuation process. The thick black smoke, which was dramatic in its appearance, was caused because the towers were made of fibreglass and as one of the two towers caught fire the second tower was caught by the flames from the first which also included an unoccupied room underneath.

The quick response by the emergency services, both in attending the fire and blocking traffic from Albir and Benidorm, meant that none of the cabins where the holiday makers were staying had been affected and as soon as it had been extinguished visitors were able to return to their accommodation. The fire, which occurred on one of the most busiest days for checking in and out, was extinguished in less than two hours. The owners of the popular site reported that the evacuation plan went well and everyone was assembled quickly and safely from the pool area, cabins and general open spaces. Initial thoughts are that there may have been a power surge as a spokesperson for Magic Costa Blanca Group said “the cooling system was installed this year and meets with all the safety measures and quality requirements”. The spokesperson went on to say that “they apologised for any inconvenience that had been caused for the guests and thanked them for their patience and quick responses in a scary situation”.

Last surviving Dambuster pilot dies aged 96 LES MUNRO, who was the final surviving pilot from RAF 617 Squadron has died aged 96 at a hospital in New Zealand. by Jeanette Rice THE 96 year old veteran, who passed away at a hospital in Auckland from heart problems, was the last pilot survivor from the famous raids against Germany’s Ruhr dams in Operation Chastise, but more commonly know as the Dambuster raids. John Leslie Munro, who preferred to be called Les, piloted one of the Lancaster bombers in 1943 but shied away from the attention that he often received because of his involvement in the raids, feeling “a little bit embarrassed”. Peter Wheeler, a representative from the New Zealand Bomber Command Association said “Les didn’t see himself as a hero, he didn’t do it for himself or personal glory, it was just for the greater good of others”. Flying 58 sorties al over Europe, Les was forced to turn back before completing the attack on the dam having been hit by an anti-aircraft shell. The prime minister for New Zealand, John Key, said “we have lost a remarkable man, who contributed to his country and his generosity will never be forgotten”. Les Munro made a lasting impression on everyone that he met, having visited the Bomber Command Memorial in London’s Green Park in 2013 he offered to sell his medals to raise funds to maintain the memorial, wanting the 55,573 airmen killed to have the recognition that they deserved. Les said at the time “my war service moulded me as a man,

gave me confidence in my own abilities and taught me to get on with my fellow man and value comradeship”. Such was the power of his message, Lord Ashcroft, the former Conservative Party Treasurer donated £75,000 to the fund so that Les could donate his medals to a museum in New Zealand. It is believed that only two other people from the raids still survive, Fred Sutherland a Canadian who was a front gunner and British George Johnson who was a bomb aimer.

Flying high for holiday season

FIGURES SHOWED that on Monday the Spanish airport network had its busiest day of the year so far. No doubt records will continue to be broken throughout the month but with travellers choosing to book their own flights rather than the traditional package deals, the airports can expect high numbers 7 days a week. A total of 882,347 seats on 5,544 aircraft’s kept the air traffic controllers busy on Monday as the first week of the month saw many long term visitors of Spain return to their countries for the summer combined with the beginning of summer holiday makers arriving. The Alicante-Elche airport had 277 flights in the one day making it the sixth busiest for AENA.

Summer invasion

HORDES OF holidaymakers invade our urbanization each summer. The usual noise of screaming children, loud music, dogs running and, of course, how could I ever forget to mention the unwashed masses in the communal swimming pool. It will be packed. The large plastic “rules” board firmly attached to the metal gate to the pool has a massive list of do’s and don’ts for conduct within the communal pool and garden. We can be sure whatever the sign says not to do, many will do, and whatever the sign says to do, many will not do. From our urbanization to everyone on RTN and fellow readers, have a wonderful sunny summer. Craig Pero, Altea

Dengue fever myth

I REFER to your article about the possibility of a Dengue Fever outbreak and, while not wishing to detract from the seriousness an outbreak would cause, and while agreeing that the tiger mosquito is the main carrier of this horrible disease, please can I dispel the myth that they breed in the salt lakes. They do not! The Mosquito belongs to the order diptera, ie two-winged flies, and, as such, can only breed in still or very sluggish “fresh water”. Any stagnant or slow water, for instance the river Segura or even the embalse Pedrera, would be an ideal breeding ground for them. Just take a walk round the margins of either to see the larvae wriggling about. Unfortunately, in Torrevieja, some of the main breeding grounds are neglected swimming pools where either the chlorine has evaporated or the pools contain only stagnant rainwater. Action needed now!

Scamming problem sorted RE YOUR letter recently about phone calls from people purporting to be from Microsoft, my friend and I have an answer. When these people ring, we say “Oh thank you very much. I didn’t realise I had a problem, but my son works for Windows so I will let him know then he can sort it. Thanks again for your call”. Then I put the phone down! FOR SEVERAL years now I have been writing to Orihuela Town Hall, complaining of the poor road markings around Los Altos. In particular the pedestrian crossings in and around Calli Escorpoines. These crossings present a high danger to any person trying to cross the roads, as drivers do not recognise the poorly marked crossings. My concerns have always been acknowledged, however, no action has been taken. Now it appears I have to restart the complete process as the previous persons I dealt with are no longer in power. Surely once a problem has been highlighted, it is irrelevant who is in power there should be some action taken to provide safety for persons using the roads. Terry Badham, Los Altos

Cilla Black 1943-2015 RIP ONE OF Britain’s greatest entertainers, Cilla Black, died on Saturday following a fall at her Spanish home in Estepona. by Jeanette Rice THE 72 year old had been sunbathing at her villa when she stood up, lost her balance and fell, hitting her head which knocked her unconscious the coroner explained, she then suffered a fatal stroke but would not have been aware of this or suffered. Following the conclusive results the celebrities three sons were able to make the arrangements to fly their mother home to the UK, which happened on Wednesday. In a statement Robert, Ben and Jack Willis said “we are devastated by the sad loss of our mother but are deeply touched by all the kind messages from her friends, fans and the media”. Cilla Black was born Priscilla Maria Veronica White in Liverpool in 1943 and shot to fame I the 1960s with a number of top ten hits including “Anyone Who Had a Heart”. Later in the 60’s Cilla moved to television and eventually hosted Blind Date and Surprise Surprise for ITV. As new broke on Sunday of the tragic accident the entertainment world gathered their thoughts and the tributes began pouring in. Sir Paul McCartney said “she was a lovely girl who infected everyone with her great spirit”. Due to visit Cilla at her Spanish villa next week Sir Cliff Richard said “her passing away is particularly shocking, because despite the

aches and pains we all suffer Cilla was always so upbeat”. Cilla hadn’t been in the public eye so much in recent years as friends said her health had been failing with arthritis and problems with both her hearing and eyesight. Barbara Windsor said “I saw her a couple of times in the last few weeks, she looked immaculate as always but I knew she wasn’t very well”. In a recent interview Cilla was told that “Anyone Who Had a Heart” was the UK’s biggest selling single by a female in the 1960s to which Cilla replied “I am 72 years old and didn’t know that until now, well I never, I can die happy now” she chuckled. `Sheridan Smith, who portrayed Cilla in the ITV biopic series “Cilla” tweeted “I am absolutely devastated to hear the tragic news about Cilla. She was the most remarkable woman, a true legend. She was so kind and helpful to me and it was a privilege to play her”. In 2010 Cilla was here in Benidorm to make a special appearance in the Television series “Benidorm” which was first aired in February 2011 (Series 4). 1,484 marijuana plants seized in La Nucia and Alfaz del Pi THE NATIONAL Police have released information pertaining to arrests that they have made in the towns of La Nucia and Alfaz del Pi, where 1,484 marijuana plants were seized. by Jeanette Rice THE NATIONAL Police began their investigations into the two properties on July 20th when reports were made of a strong odour in the vicinity. Officers discretely checked out the two villas to confirm the presence of the drugs before making plans to catch the perpetrators. Both of the properties contained plantations with sophisticated ventilation systems, lighting, irrigation and drying areas. This indicated to the officers that the cultivation was being done for distribution purposes. The villa in La Nucia, registered to a Spanish man contained a greenhouse in the basement which housed 406 plants and 72 cannabis stalks. The Spanish man aged 42 was arrested at the scene. The villa in Alfaz del Pi had 1078 plants and 200 grams of marijuana buds in a greenhouse that had been fitted in a ground floor room of the property. The occupier, a Belgian man of 49 was arrested at the scene. Both men, who have no criminal records, were arrested under the criminal act of

“crimes against public health”, and once they were questioned they were released on bail pending a court date. The National Police welcomes the participation of local citizens reporting anything that they felt was suspicious and have an email address that members of the general public can confidentially send information to. Alfaz del Pi sports facilities improving

THE IMPROVEMENTS being made at the Alfaz de Pi sports centre are nearly completed. After works were halted due to financial issues, the town hall of Alfaz del Pi took on the project which includes artificial turf for the football field and facilities for both the home teams and visiting teams. On Tuesday the mayor of the town, Vicente Arques together with the councillor for planning Vicente Soler, councillor for sports Luis Miguel Morant and councillor for safety Genoveva Tent, visited the facility to see the progress and announce that they expected the work to be completed by September. Luis Miguel Morant said “the building will house four locker rooms for football teams, two dressing rooms for referees and toilets for the public to use”. Costing 350,000€ the project has been funded by a grant from the Provincial Council of Alicante.

Tourist offices win Q awards

Palau d’Esports L’Illa

Palau d’Esports L’Illa controversy by Jeanette Rice LAST FRIDAY the concessionaire of the pool and fitness centre gave one days notice of its intention to cease supporting the facilities at Palau d’Esports L’Illa in Benidorm. In a letter sent to the Benidorm town council Levantina Aquatic Services Limited, the company running the facility, said that it was their intention to cease providing any services as from August 1st, which was only the following day! It has been a turbulent relationship between the two parties with the town hall opening an investigation into ways of terminating the contract, following what they felt were various and repeat-

ed breaches of the agreement. It seems that in anticipation of having their contract annulled Aquatic Services Levantina Ltd took the decision to end it themselves. Amongst the several violations that the town hall felt were of note was that the company had been failing to pay their workers, not ensuring that maintenance works were carried out as agreed and a general disregard for agreed terms in the contract. In a statement issued by the company, Juan Carlos Hernandez, manager, said “we have not been making a profit and have suffered large financial losses

but are prepared to stay until a replacement provider can be found”. A government spokesperson, Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate together with Ana Pellicar, councillor for sport, said that they were “working on finding a permanent replacement for Levantina. Levantina were awarded the contract for 10 years and, despite their letter terminating the contract, continued to provide services on the following day. The town hall stated that “if the company decided to unilaterally leave before the end of the contract then they were willing to maintain and ensure the services to the public”.

BENIDORMS TOURIST information offices have received the Q of quality awards in accordance with the new ISO -14785 standard. The towns tourist offices are the first in the Valencian region to receive the award with both the Rincon de Loix and Torrejo centres sucessfully passing the audit. The Q award lets people know that the centres offer a good service, have good communication links with the local businesses and commitment to the tourism industry. Although the Torrejo office has received a Q award in the past, the International Organisation for Standardisation had changed some of the criteria so they performed well to achieve the award again with the Rincon de Loix office also joining them. Benidorm Tourist information has a team of 11 staff, who on average help 200,000 users a year.

And as consul of Alicante and Madrid, Mrs Morris said: “I am delighted to offer my support to the International Charities Fair as it takes place once again in Benidorm this September. “Many of you will have experienced the help and support that local Englishspeaking charities can give in times of need. “I know that without their support, the Consulate would not be able to help as many British nationals as we currently do.” She added: “If anyone reading this has a bit of free time, I urge them to go along to the fair and see how they can get involved. Villajoyosa clean up THE DEPARTMENT of Environment, Parks and Gardens in Villajoyosa has applied for permission to clear the dry river bed Amadorio of all vegetation. The council has made the application as it feels that should the area experience heavy rain the river bed would be able to cope better with the vegetation removed. A council spokesperson said “it is not only because of the long anticipated rain that we need to do this but also because of the increasing number of mosquitoes in the area”. The river bed is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes as there is some standing water and dense vegetation, a perfect environment for them to breed.

Copa del Rey breaks all records

THE 34th EDITION of the Copa del Rey de Vela, Spain’s most prestigious sailing event, started on Monday and finishes Sunday August 8th. This year the Mapfre sponsored event has attracted record number of boats and participants to La Palma, with 1,500 sailors aboard 135 boats representing 23 countries this year. The King of Spain, King Philip VI, is personally competing in the Corel 45 “Aifos”, the same boat that he sailed in nearly two decades ago. The president of the Real Club Nautico de Palma, Javier Sanz, thanked the Monarch for his participation saying: “the King is a seaman, closely linked to Palma, whose participation gives us an added sense of pride for our race.” The competition is divided into eight classes with the 135 yachts representing 23 countries: Malta, United States, France, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Switzerland, Peru, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Latvia, British Virgin Islands, Argentina, Ecuador, Belgium, Portugal, Chile, Sweden, the Netherlands and Great Britain. The run up to the competition was not without incident as the owner and skipper of “Duende 52” had to be rescued on Satur-

day, after being ‘lost’ at sea and spending more than four hours in the water. Jacinto Rodriguez, who is still sailing and skippering his boat at the fantastic age of 84, said “I feel I have recovered’ and found the strength to participate in his first race on Monday. Citizens of Torrevieja should also have a sense of pride because this year, the award winning yacht MAVERTA is competing for both Spain and Torrevieja. The yachts Patron is Don Pedro Gil Rebollo, who for the first time will be competing in the Copa del Rey. At RTN we wish both him and the whole crew the best of luck in this new journey. The 34th Copa del Rey MAPFRE started off in spectacular fashion with a fleet of 135 boats filling the Bay of Palma on Monday. The debut of the Super Series TP52 and Soto 40 Singular Kitchen has brought in water to 135 boats, the largest fleet in the history of the race. The wind has gone from strength to strength, with intensities between 7 and 15 knots. The classes being competed for are: Gaastra IRC 0, Rias Baixas IRC 1, TP52 Super Series, BMW ORC 1, BMW ORC 2, Singular Kitchen SOTO 40, Air Europa X-35 and Herbalife J80. “Lifeline 4 Lynsey” afternoon emotional by Jeanette Rice

FOR THE second time over the weekend the expats and holidaymakers gathered to raise funds for the Lifeline 4 Lynsey, with this fund raiser being held on Sunday. Although temperatures were still high hundreds of people gathered at the “Talk of the Coast” bar to help local performer Emma Louise, from “One Vision”, raise funds to get her sister Lynsey the cancer treatment that she so urgently needs. Whilst the family themselves have put everything they have into helping fund the treatment more is needed to ensure that Lynsey has the best possible chance of beating the dreadful disease. The afternoon was packed with entertainment hosted by Chunky B, who did some amazing improvisations when performers needed to do quick costume changes, and the many performances included Michael Jackson vs Lady Gaga, Meat Loaf, The Rat Pack, Sister Act, Timeless, Chess, One Vision and the Abba girls. Emma Louise, who was understandably emotional, along with her many helpers put on an afternoon that just flew by with the audience rocking in their seats as the Chess lead singer Charlie Joss encouraged us to get our raffle tickets from the “bucket people”. Local businesses surpassed themselves with donations for the raffle and an auction was held at the end of the afternoon for a vast array of music memorabilia which included a drum skin signed by the original Take That. Emma Louise said “I cannot thank everyone enough for your amazing support for me and my family, you have all been absolutely amazing”. The total raised during the afternoon was 2,700€. Tony told RTN he is training four days a week. “I set off around quarter to six in the morning because it is so hot during the day. It’s going very well; I’m up to 15km or 20km. “I’ve done a few marathons before so I know all about it – and my daughter has always wanted to do one with her dad! “It’s our home town and the Dublin Marathon has always been known as the friendly marathon because of the very enthusiastic support along the route for everyone taking part.

“I have been involved with the charity for quite a while and do a lot of gigs

for them,” said Tony. “We have lost people to cancer in our family and it is a very good cause. “There are a lot of them out there and I have run other marathons in aid of charities. I know it’s hard times for everyone and there are plenty of good causes to support.” Tony hopes people will sponsor him or just give a small donation. “I don’t want to pressure people – they can just give 50 cents or a euro – every bit helps.” They can also donated money at one of his gigs or call him on 678 029 919 to make a pledge. Regan’s rainbow shines brighter THE CHARITY event held in Benidorm last Saturday for Regan’s rainbow was a resounding success with 667 euros being raised.

by Jeanette Rice IN WHAT was an emotional afternoon for Regan’s mother Julie, as featured on “benefit street” the expat community gathered together to raise funds for the ”Regan rainbow charity” at Sandra’s bar. Regan, who died early this year, touched many peoples hearts and as many of the entertainment community donated their time to help entertain the audience helpers were selling raffle tickets to help boost the total. Julie Young, Regan’s mum, said “a community is not built on bricks and mortar alone, it is built on people and how they act and support each other, today has been an amazing example of that community”. Organisers of the event were overwhelmed with the help that they received from local businesses donating prizes and that so many entertainers wanted to be involved.

Compare and performer, Will Sparkle, chose a poignant outfit for the afternoon wearing a long rainbow dress as everyone gathered on the dance floor for Regan’s favourite song “reach for the stars”. Steve Glimmer, one of the organisers said “I hope that in some small way we in Benidorm have helped make a difference and promoted awareness of what Julie and her wonderful neighbours are trying to achieve”. Amongst the performers were Jenny Renn, Cheryle Louise and Jesse Brooke plus many more and as the afternoon came to a close everyone danced to the UB40 classic “Kingston Town” which turned into “Kingston Road” where Regan had lived. MS Amadea just six weeks away HISTORY WILL be made in six weeks and four days, when on September 22nd, the City of Torrevieja will welcome her first cruise ship. by Keith Nicol THE PHOENIX Reisen flagship, the MS Amadea pays a short afternoon and evening stop in the city on route to Palma with the cruise ending in Nice. Phoenix Reisen is a Germany-based travel agency that also operates a fleet of cruise ships and caters to a discerning German clientele. They guarantee a fascinating and individual cruise experience and are proud of the fact that the MS Amadea sets standards in terms of space per passenger and with a maximum 600 guests onboard, they can offer superb hospitality coupled with culinary delights from their gourmet cuisine. The MS Amadea will weigh anchor mid afternoon close to the Marina Salinas off the Dique de Levante and guests will be tendered ashore from around 4pm onwards, with the ship setting sail for Palma at 11.00pm. Although the Department of Tourism have yet to receive any updates from the Town Hall as to what to expect when the ship arrives on September 22nd, Torrevieja’s Small and Medium Business Association, APYMECO, are busy working on a plan of action to ensure that guests have plenty to see and do, on a normally quiet Tuesday evening. The MS Amadea was originally built as Japan’s top cruise

ship the MS Asuka in 1991 and has been the flagship of the Phoenix Reisen fleet since 2006. The other two ships in the fleet are the MS Albatross and their largest ship, the MV Artania. Some Torrevieja residents ay have cruised on her previously as she previously the Royal Princess. She was christened by Diana, Princess of Wales, in Southampton, on 15th November 1984. In April 2005, she was transferred to the P&O Cruises fleet and was renamed Artemis. In 2011, she moved to Phoenix Reisen’s fleet, under the modified name Artania. In October 2016, Torrevieja will welcome a second ship from their fleet, the MS Albatros, also from Phoenix Reisen. She was built in 1973 for Royal Viking Line as Royal Viking Sea, and has also sailed under the names Royal Odyssey, Norwegian Star, and Crown. The ship is slightly smaller than the MS Amadea at 28,518 GRT but has a Capacity of 812 passengers, due to a different ship layout. It’s hoped by many that these two ships will start a new cruise ship revolution in Torrevieja and as the Phoenix Reisen brochure states; “A vessel to dream, a dream to travel”.

La Nucia queen presented to the town ANGELA CANO Lloret was presented to the town of La Nucia as the homecoming queen for August 2015 with her 6 bridesmaids. by Jeanette Rice THE CEREMONY of “La Presentacio” took place at the Les Nits Auditorium where over 1,000 people attended the event at the weekend. As with every year, the announcement and presentation of the queen takes place prior to the August fiestas, which this year will be held on 14th - 18th of the month. Video’s and music played throughout the event which also included the queen from 2014 attending and as a traditional end to the ceremony there was a waltz where the queens from 2014 and 2015 along with their companions danced together. The official coronation will take place this Saturday 8th at the Placa Major where Angela will become the 45th queen of the Fiestas de Agosto.

LA CALA beach was busier than usual last Friday as Zumba took to the sand. The Zumba class was the first of several classes that will take place throughout August on the beach area of La Cala and have been organised by the Finestrat town hall in conjunction with Fitness Corpore Company who supply the qualified instructors. David Alarcon, councillor for sport said “this has been very successful in the past and we are committed to offering exciting opportunities to those who wish to visit the beach area”. Giving a Spanish property to children or family. QUESTION: DEAR lawyer, I’m English, I have a house in Spain between Javea and Denia, valued about 195,000 euros. I want to transfer this property to my 2 sons who live in the UK. I have been told that the best way is to gift it to them. Is that correct? What would be the tax to be paid?

DEAR READER, thank you for your legal advice request. As per the recent changes, it is true that the donation and gift is often the most tax efficient way to transfer a property in Spain to our family. Mainly because now the benefits of inheritance and gift tax, previously reserved for tax residents in Spain now apply to citizen’s tax resident in the European Union or the European Economic Area also. But it is not always the case, as certain information that must be obtained and studied prior to making a gift, to see the real consequences of it. 1. Determine the value of the property to be donated. Donations and Gift tax to be paid depends on the value of the property. It is essential to calculate what is known as the minimum tax value, i.e. the minimum value that the tax authorities will consider acceptable. 2. Gift / donation Tax: As your children are living in a country of the European Union, they will benefit from the tax reductions foreseen in the Gift Tax Law of the Valencian Region, where the property is. These benefits are: a reduction of - 100,000€ (for each of them) on the value of asset donated, and a discount of -75% on

the Gift Tax to be paid. In your case, as each child will receive half of the house, worth about 97,500€, there would not be Gift or Donations Tax to be paid. 3. Municipal Plusvalia: You must pay this local tax to the corresponding Town Hall, the amount of which will depend on the land value of the property donated, how long you have owned the property, etc. 4. Capital Gains Tax: This may be the most problematic tax. You should know that when there is a donation, the person who donates, although they are not receiving any money in return, must still pay capital gains tax, calculated by the difference between the purchase price (the price for which you bought, plus expenses) and the transfer value (the value given to the property in the donation - gift). Although it is possible that you should not pay this tax, if you are over 65 and you donate your habitual residency, etc. Therefore, it is possible that a donation is the best way to transfer your property to your children, but you should make a study of the rest of tax payable, and the legal implications before making a decision .

Do I need a gardener?

THE END of a long hot summer is a good time to review whether a gardener would be helpful to you to reduce the work load in the garden and enable you to enjoy the benefits of living in Spain to the full. This is a very personal question and it needs to be considered objectively against the background of your own situation. However what follows will help you review your situation and make a sensible decision. There are five general types of expatriates moving to or already living in Spain. Retirees with plenty of time and an interest in a variety of activities. Which may include gardening ,but only on a restricted time basis. Retirees whose main hobby is gardening and who are fit enough to do all now and for years to come. Retirees and younger persons who are no longer physically fit enough to do all the gardening and would like some help rather than buying a smaller property. Younger persons who come to work, and whether interested or not in gardening have a limited time available. Anyone who has no interest whatsoever in gardening, now or in the future.

Naturally each have genuine ambitions for a new life style in Spain and many will need a gardener now or at some time in the future. Perhaps just to get the garden established or also for ongoing maintenance as well. It is very easy to let your enthusiasm for creating a wonderful garden run away with itself and assume that everything can be done in a year or that your dream ‘garden of Eden’ won’t require much maintenance. It can happen of course, if you take on a garden landscaper to do the whole job for you. But at a cost. Not just for the construction and planting up but for the ongoing maintenance and high water bill if thirsty

plants are planted. Do recognise that some landscape gardeners look for their profit from the initial construction phase and others from the ongoing maintenance contract. For some such costs will be beyond their resources at any time of life and they will continue to prefer the fun and satisfaction of creating a new garden from nothing or improving and existing one until death parts them from the most satisfying part of their lives. The wise thing is to be honest with yourself. Always first analyse the lifestyle yourself and family members want before deciding one what a gardener could do for you. Decide which of the following is for you - now and for the next few years - and what could be delegated to: A landscape company. A garden maintenance company. A local jobbing gardener. In each case recognise that the experience of each may have been gained in environments very different to Spain. Design of garden. Landscaping, including paths, terraces and walls. Development of special features. Selection of plants. Purchasing of plants. Planting of plants. Watering and feeding of plants. Raising of new plants from seeds or cuttings. Ongoing maintenance of flower, fruit and vegetable gardens. Care of greenhouse and garden frame. Winter cut back. Ongoing maintenance – lawn mowing, flower garden, vegetable garden, fruit garden, naya pots, pond, pool/jacussi etc. Based on this analysis decide whether you need :

No gardener. A gardener to help do an initial clean up of an existing neglected garden. A gardener to design and develop a garden that you will then maintain. A gardener to design, develop and maintain your garden. If proposing to be an absentee gardener decide whether you want a gardener; to tend the garden 52 days a year, whether you are in Spain or not. This may be essential if you plan to let or want to be able to fly in at a moments notice at any convenient time of the year and enjoy a tidy flourishing garden, or to only do a major tidy up just before each of your visits and during your stay. You may be in the situation that a gardener already existed when you purchased your property. In this case consider whether he/she has the knowledge, experience, physique, physical fitness, motivation and time to create and maintain the garden you want or do you need to make a change. If the latter we suggest that you make the change as early as possible. On the other hand if you are lucky enough to inherit a really good gardener make sure you don’t loose him or her. In some areas they are like gold dust.

I met a man on a dating website. He told me he was separated and getting a divorce. I found out after six months that he was still living with his wife. This would be a good time to make plans, or to schedule a long awaited event because time is of the essence and you are out there in pole position poised to make a difference just where it is needed. Time will tell and serve you well. Mercury conjuncts Venus midweek backing something you have put off but which begs for completion right now. Clearly this connection ensures that all levels of communication are opening to you, and you can rest assured that you will use this wisely; since the decisions are yours alone to make, and you have to move on. Jupiter, planetary leader of your opposing sign of Sagittarius, takes on Virgo and this changes things somewhat. What may be seen as a negativity will bring you to your senses and help you to avoid future calamity by your own persuasive ways and means. You do not know what you can do, but, by good result, you will find out. Ceres sextiles Saturn, and this gives you the green light you have long awaited. Saturn is bristling after a recent connection with Mercury, and it would seem that you cannot wait to get your teeth into something that needs your tender love and care right now. Beware of those who say they will back you, andjust work on things alone. Mars gets a very poor reception from you this week as you feel that things just aren’t going your way. This is a reveal, and although the effects won’t shed any light on a current thorn in your side, it will certainly make a difference, when and where it is needed. Healing the home

I PROMISED to continue my article about spiritually cleaning the home. I can say that I got so much mail from people this weekend who are experiencing the supernatural presences in their homes all across the Costa Blanca, the UK and even from a regular reader from New Mexico. It’s the same rule all over the World. The householder is the best person to ask the unwanted to move on out, and this article is written to enable you to be safe and effective, since these are the two most important keynotes in the entire process. I, or any other enabled person, could come to your home to practise both the second and the third and final stage of spirit removal. Such banishments are best in the hands of a true professional. But the initial asking of an entity to depart is generally best in the hands of the permanent resident of the house. A good way to spot the negative energies in your home is to clap your hands together at each corner of each room. The response should be a sharp echo, but if you repeatedly get a dull sounding response then this is indicative that something more should be done. Talking out loud helps to pass a message on to anything that is threatening to invade the peace and stability of your home. In this primary stage I would recommend talking to the presence as you would to a runaway child, with mixed reactions of anger and love. Suggest at this crucial stage that there is somewhere more important for them to live than in your home. Re enforce that this wayward spirit does not know of their demise and so tell them that because of their death they can no longer inhabit this home. Be firm that they know full well that this home is yours, that they are not welcome, and that you initially feel sorry for them. It can help to show compassion and understanding, only at this stage. Tell them that there has to be somewhere they should be, but that it isn’t here in your home, or now in this present time. Wait for results. Say your goodbye, because if spirit linger after this very straight forward and polite request to leave, you know very well that you may have a little more of a struggle on your hands. It is vitally important that you insist politely that as any unwanted guest, it is time to go. Give them time, but not too long. A little spell here is called for. You will need a bucket, some water and a few bunches of fresh mint, freely available in supermarkets or open air markets. Steep the mint in a bucket filled with fresh water, and leave it overnight. Next day squeeze out the mint and discard it, and use this water to mop the floors of the house wherever you can. You can wash down surfaces with this water too. Such a cleansing with mint greatly raises the energy of your home. It acts as a sign you are going to live in a spirit free house whatever it takes, as the action of washing with fresh mint takes on a spiritual meaning of freshness and helps you to establish that you mean business. Generally I light a candle too and dedicate it to the spirits in transit. It is important that you show that these unwanted ones have your pity, but that it is time for them to go. The candle burns to show your support and lights them the way to their new and more suitable surroundings. Say goodbye and tell them to follow the light to the Spirit World which is where the undead generally belong, after all. Throughout this ridding process talk openly and kindly to spirits. You do not hate them, but you are concerned that they are getting the roughest of deals here on Earth, and that their happiness in finding new surroundings is of your concern. You should be closer to having a happy peaceful and silent home restored. Your home is important to you, and greater harmony will be achieved if you follow these simple but empowering steps! Let me know how you do, and if any specific help is needed; as each situation is unique, after all!

Jupiter conjuncts with Mercury and takes on Ceres this week. Both these actions are enabled to allow anyone who cares, to know that you did what you could under difficult circumstances; and that for sure nobody else could have done anything better. You warned and correctly predicted the consequences of denial. There are moments when you feel that you are up for the challenge, and your adrenaline flows, but just lately it is your innermost self that has learned the hardest lesson the most difficult way. Just sitting back isn’t a cop out, not when you know the full implications of just what it would take to make everybody happy right now! Mercury’s opposition to Neptune truly chills you to the bone as you can see that something just isn’t right, but that you are powerless to do anything about it. Nobody who has your interests at heart would ever wish to treat you like this, and before further hurt is done have your say, as those who criticise you have lost their tongue. Helping a good friend back on the tracks is very draining this week, especially since they appear not to be responding to your tender love and care. Your gut actions are to take all this on the chin, but anyone who bites the hand that feeds them has to come back to their senses pretty soon, and this is the progress you are long awaiting!

We had a family visit and my two year old grandson was sitting in front of the same space, clapping his hands and laughing. There has to be something there surely? Kim de V. Hi Kim. Children are born psychic and whilst a minority develop their powers others sadly are in part of a process that allows them to be in touch only with reality and the norm. Animals are very highly psychically in tuned too.....they do not develop strategies that allow them to disbelieve in anything that they can see hence they will always respond, and usually in the same prescribed way. Together you now have the evidence you need to investigate this phenomena more fully...if indeed you wish to learn more about your wall!

Russian television visits the Costa Blanca A RUSSIAN Television crew are visiting the northern Costa Blanca to produce a holiday TV programme with the focus on family holidays. by Keith Nicol THE CREW will be touring the main sights around the northern part of Alicante until 20th August, with scheduled visits to Benidorm, Altea, Calpe and El Castell de Guadalest. Although Russian TV crews have visited this part of Spain before, this particular programme is about travelling with children for a major Russian television network, the channel ‘Mama’. The team is visiting many sights and attractions along the coast as well as looking at different types of holidays and options for family vacations that exist in the province. Their brief is to produce five episodes of 44 minutes duration, which then will be presented on the state television VGTRK channels. The shows run along the lines of what we would expect from the UK ‘Holiday Show’ from yesteryear, explaining and showing viewers the various experiences and entertainment that families travelling with children can be found on the Costa Blanca. The concept is based around the experiences of a Russian family that travels the province to visit friends already living in the Alicante area.

The vice president and deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, highlighted the importance of this initiative that allows; “The Costa Blanca to promote the region in a slightly different manner; in an original and engaging way; showing our wide range of family tourism options around the province that are relevant and important to the Russian market.” The group will also be visiting theme parks such as Terra Mitica, Terra Natura and Aqualandia in Benidorm, the Aitana Safari in Penàguila and the Fountains of Algar in Callosa d’En Sarria. The Russian ‘family’ will also be visiting the Castell de L’Olla de Altea and the ‘Medieval Challenge’ show, in L’Alfàs del Pi. Naturally, the cameras will also be recording the beaches, local events and happenings, the typical infrastructure and discovering the gastronomy of the region among many other options. “The provincial government of Alicante thus maintains its commitment to publicise the different alternatives offered by the province at the Russian tourist market, in this case to promote the different option

Relleu fiesta’s By Jeanette Rice RELLEU FIESTA’S begin today, Friday 7th August and promise to entertain visitors until Tuesday 11th when they end with a grand firework display. Relleu, a small rural town on the Costa Blanca is located inland from Benidorm and Villajoyosa and accessed via the CV775. Surrounded by mountains the small town celebrates every year the Festival of Sant Albert. This takes place for 5 days over the weekend closest to 7 August. It is celebrated by making a pilgrimage to the shrine of the saint. There are also sardines, paella, cucanyes (games), costume parade, orchestras and banyà (swimming). Each day of the fiesta has something different for visitors with residents from the town, irrespective of age, being involved. Charities come to The Club

THE CLUB in Quesada, whilst always open to charity events has recently had no less than three events in four days. Starting with a Fashion Show and Ladies Pamper Day and then an evening performance by Stevie Spit followed by a fun day on Friday organised by Nicola Etheridge and Suzi Cooper with a Free to Enter Draw sponsored by local estate agent Spanish Life Properties and Blacktower Financial Management Group. The Club has always been well known for entertainment and attracting very popular artists. They will now be hosting even more daytime events, with the first of these coming up on Tuesday 18th August. It’s a fun Afternoon of Clairvoyance with Alison Wynne-Ryder the Quirky Medium from 12.00 midday until 6.00pm. Cuenca Region WE ALL enjoy the traditional Spain. You know! Sun, sea, and sand. But even in the summer months there is a lot more to Spain than that. At the top of a mountain we see water from a river oozing from the rocks, and sparkle in the sun for the first time. Gentle breezes stir fields of golden corn which sway gently in the light breeze. The turquoise waters of the Toba reservoir sparkle in the warm summer sunshine In the city of Cuenca an impressive medieval cathedral fills one side of the quaint town square. Houses built on the side of the rock hang precariously over the heights of the gorge. The gorge is spanned by a narrow bridge not meant for the faint of heart, but which leads to an old monastery which now serves as a “Parador” ( a state run chain of fine hotels). TAYLOR SWIFT might have trouble sleeping at night as she´s gathering ´haters´ by the hour. Her latest is Edward Droste lead singer with New York group Grizzly Bear who said “Met a celebrity I always speculated was terribly calculated and mean, and she exceeded all my expectations of rudeness and arrogance. HATE” It seems it’s all to do with Swift´s power in the business … and her abuse of it! Goodness!

EVERY TIME Snoop Dog pops up in the press the word ´drugs´ will always feature. His latest exploit happened in Uppsala Sweden last week after his show with him explaining “I´m a victim of racial profiling, they made me pee in a cup – didn’t find s**t! No case! No nothing!” Snoop, who apologised to his Swedish fans, posted a series of clips charting the entire incident.

HAVE YOU ever, like me, uttered the immortal words “What’s Up Doc?” This infamous phrase was first said during 1940 Disney cartoon ´A Wild Hare´ when Bugs Bunny outwitted Elmer Fudd for the very first time on his ‘wabbit’ hunt. The ´What’s up Doc?’ line proved so popular with audiences that it went on to become his legendary catchphrase, and remains so 75 years later. LAST WEEK the X Factory screwed up again, and of all things they should mess with it’s the very meat and drink of the programme, the contestants. What´s one of the worst things you can do with your pet? Get out a packet of treats, shake it in their face a few times then put it back in the cupboard; yep! that’s pretty nasty! Well the contestants were treated similarly, as after they were told they´d won a place at boot camp, they were then sent a correspondence that, according to The Daily Star, read “As there are ‘limited places’ at boot camp, getting yeses from Simon, Cheryl, Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora doesn’t necessarily mean you are through!” Well now isn´t that nice!! The report went on to spew out all sorts of yuk like “The standard of auditions has been very high this year and sadly we cannot offer everyone who received a “yes” in their audition a place in the next stage of the competition,” is this pathetic or what? This sorrowful communication ended with “We are writing to inform you now to make sure you don´t book any travel for next week!” I have continually said that the show has always been about the judges and that the contestants are really only there to further the panel member’s careers and this latest boot campgate debacle serves to confirm that I´m right on the money! To add some serious weight to this argument, one of the receivers of the aforementioned communication, who preferred to remain nameless, said to The Daily Star, “I feel The X Factor needs to be shamed for this shocking incident! They are playing with people’s lives!” They certainly are oh nameless one, but it’s all about the judges you see!

AFTER SO many rumours about Chris Evans taking over Top Gear, we are now being courted with the rumour that Jenson Button is to be in the new show. Jenson is a very popular guy who was named the ´Best Bloke in UK´ a few years back, and few would disagree. Having been nicknamed ´Mr Smoothie´ because of his driving style in F1, should he get the nod he´ll be a worthy addition to the show.

L’Olla firework extravaganza

by Jeanette Rice TOMORROW, SATURDAY is the very famous L’Olla firework display which attracts spectators from all over Spain. The event, the Castell de L’Olla is held every year on the Saturday night that falls closest to the 10th August to celebrate the saints day of San Lorenzo, hence this year the display taking place on the 8th August. Costing approximately € 70,000 the pyrotechnic extravaganza, which has been held for the past 28 years, attracts crowds of over 50,000. People watch from wherever they can find space with the Albir beach being packed as well as Altea and Calpe, all offering good viewing spots. The display is free and is set on the 1.4 km pebbled beach on the outskirts of Altea and with most of the spectators arriving early with their tables, chairs and a picnic basket, ready to spend the evening chatting and drinking, parking spaces are premium. The display starts at midnight and lasts approximately 30-40 minutes as the fireworks are set off from floating platforms whilst a live orchestra plays to the sky lighting up in a sea of colours. The local police close many of the roads into the area mid evening, around 89pm, so unless you are travelling by TRAM it is advisable to get there in plenty of time.

Fancy a jam session? A JAM session, of the musical variety, will be starting up at the L’Estacion bar in Alfaz del Pi as from Sunday August 16th. The event is open to anyone be they budding musicians or just like to hear live music and will start at 5pm on the Sunday afternoon. A house band will be there to get the music started and if you are taking your own instruments you can just “plug in and play” as the PA system will be there for all to utilise. The bar will be serving food at special prices so it promises to be a good afternoon. If you can’t make the first Sunday don’t worry, the event is planned for every Sunday at 5pm until further notice.

Battery issues

HI AUNTY: I’m running an Acer Aspire laptop with Windows 7 and the time keeps changing when I switch off. When I first switch on and try to load Firefox I get an error message ‘unable to confirm page security’- however, once I correct the time it all works fine. I am linked to “time.windows.com” but I understand that it only synchronises weekly. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Regards, Jim. Aunty says: The issue of your PC’s time reverting back to a default time, will be down to your PC’s internal battery running low and not able to power the memory when the PC is switched off. If you are on “default time” and you try to access webpage, they may be blocked for security reasons. For example if your PCs time is “01 01 2001”, then it will think something is up if it tried to access a web page of today’s date...how can it trust a website that has a date stamp of 15 years in the future! So you will need to disconnect the pc from the power, open the case, locate the battery, carefully remove it, find and carefully insert a replacement battery of the same specification. Response: Thanks - I thought there was a backup battery but it never mentioned it when I used help.

Windows 10 Hi Aunty, Think you are going to get inundated with questions re the free issue. Mine is a follow up to your answer to Les. I have a Lenovo Laptop, which came with Windows 8 preloaded,and no installation discs. What does one do, to ensure nothing is lost, i.e... Windows 8, when new installation of 10 goes ahead. Regards, Tony Aunty says: In recent years Windows does not come with installation disks. It relies on a “secret” area on your hard drive for the installation. However, you are often given the option (in control panel) to create your own set of installation disks or recovery drive should you need them. But the key thing, before installing W10, is to make a back up onto a external HD drive , usb drive, or usb pendrive, of your personal files, images and documents. Hopefully the installation of W10 should be smooth, but you never know, which is why I would advise backing up personal files. But if you are unsure, perhaps take it to your local PC store to help on the installation process. And note that if you like W7 or W8, you do not HAVE to upgrade to W10... you can continue to use W7 and 8 if you want,as Microsft will continue to support these for a while yet.

Past Continuous tense: “ar” verbs

LAST WEEK we started looking at the “past continuous” “past descriptive” or “imperfect” tense and we finished off by saying that the main difficulty of this tense for us is finding the right translation into English, as it varies a little depending on the context. APART FROM that, we saw that the actual meaning of it is pretty straightforward and putting it together is extremely easy. I think I’ll start today by proving that last point first! We have learnt many times before that all verbs are made up of two parts, the root and the ending. Whenever we make changes to verbs we have to keep these two parts firmly in mind and treat them differently as they carry different information. The root gives us the main meaning of the word, such as eat, drink, play etc. The ending tells us who is doing these things and when they are doing them. In infinitive verbs the endings are –ar, -er, and –ir and the roots are whatever is left, be it made up of one letter or ten. So, let’s take an –ar verb, such as mirar. Our root is “mir” giving us the idea of “look” and our ending is –ar. To form this “past continuous tense” we change the –ar ending as follow: -aba -ábamos - abas -abais - aba -aban This gives us: miraba (I was looking)

mirábamos (we were looking) mirabas (you were looking) mirabais (you were looking – plural) miraba (he/she was looking) miraban (they were looking) The translations could also be “I looked” or “I used to look”, depending on the context, but the idea is always focused on an action that lasts some period of time. Another thing to notice is that the first person singular and third person singular are identical, so sometimes we need to put in the word “yo”, “él” or “ella” or the name of a person, to clarify which one is being used. Remember as well that the third person form also includes the formal “usted” version. Although it is rather difficult to get this over in print, we also need to be aware of where the word stress goes on each word. I will illustrate this here with the use of capital letters, as follows: mirAba, mirAbas, mirAba, mirÁbamos, mirAbais, mirAban. As ever it is very important to get the beat of the word right as this will affect whether we are understood or not when we are speaking. It is the rhythm or beat of the word that gives it its shape and makes it meaningful to the

ear, especially when linked with other words in a quickly spoken sentence. Now here’s the good news – every single “–ar” verb changes in exactly the same way, there are no irregular verbs whatsoever. Even “Estar” goes “estaba, estabas” etc. and all those horrible “root changing” ones in the present tense, keep their roots exactly as they are in this one. As my students know I am particularly averse to using the words “always” or “never” about language, but this is one of those rare moments! So, now you can confidently talk about things that happened habitually or continuously in the past, provided you stick to –ar verbs! For example – “En Inglaterra me levantaba a las 7. Viajaba al trabajo en autobús. Tomaba té a todas horas. Trabajaba cinco días a la semana. Jugaba al golf los domingos. Compraba ropa en el centro de la ciudad. Cenaba en casa a las 7. Me acostaba a las 11.” As you can see, the possibilities are endless! Next week we will look at what happens to –er and –ir verbs (which are exactly the same as each other) and after that we will see the irregular verbs, if which there is a grand total of three: SER, VER and IR.

5th International Charities Fair THE POPULAR annual International Charities Fair returns to the Costa Blanca for the fifth time on Sunday 20th September. by Jack Troughton It is a chance for good causes and their teams of volunteers to show solidarity and meet the public in an area adjoining the El Cisne Antique and Rastro Centre at Benidorm. The unique and fun occasion is open between 10am and 3pm and charities and support associations from across the region can meet the public together – and also to have fun with entertainment and refreshments; including a visit by Vince Tracy. The fair is organised by Pamela Dawson Tasker of Spanish cancer charity AECC and Paula Chinchilla of the Lifestyle Care Group. Dozens of charities and associations take part every year and this September there will be new faces anxious to reach a greater audience.

It is a chance for the exhibitors to network and also for the public to meet individuals behind the charities and access information first hand. Naturally, each stall will also have a huge variety of items to sell to help raise money to fund their work. And they hope they can recruit new members to help them do their job – volunteers are needed to help adults in need, children, and animals – and for anyone interested in doing charity work, it is the perfect opportunity to find out more. The antique and rastro centre will also be open next to the fair, giving the opportunity for an interesting day out. Juice and soup

Medals for Masters in the Spanish National Championships

◄ Club Natacion Torrevieja Masters TORREVIEJA MASTERS came back from Zaragoza this week with 12 medals in the XXVI Summer Spanish National Masters Swimming Championships. Over 800 swimmers from 126 clubs participated over the 4 days of the championships and 39 Spanish and European Masters records were broke during the event. The event was sponsored by Speedo and hosted by the sports complex “Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar”, in Zaragoza situated on the banks of the River Ebro. Combined with the championships,

new awards were presented to swimmers winning first place in their age categories as a result of this years “1st Circuito Nacional Isostar Octatlon Open masters”. This award acknowledges achievements of swimmers throughout the years competitions amalgamating swimmers 8 best times in different races across the year. Local swimmer Beth Altabas won 1st place in the 70+ category and 2nd in the overall national “Supermasters” competition. Beth was presented with a selection of gifts from the sponsors Isostar. To compliment this

award Beth also won gold medals in each of her 5 races, 800m,400m,200m,100m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke races across the four days. Other Masters from Torrevieja achieved similar rewards, Paul Matthews won gold in his 50m Butterfly, silver in the 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle and bronze in his 50m Breaststroke and 200m Freestyle events (65+ category). Team mate Vicki Connolly won silver in her 400m and 100m Freestyle races and got 4th place in her 800m and 200m Freestyle events (45+

TO ALL those interested in Walking Football, The Player Flamenca Walking football has suspended its training games until Monday 7th September and will resume K.O. at 6pm. If you think you would like to play next season the only restrictions are that you must be over 55 and able to walk, and willing to play. There were two “two’s” and they went to John Guest and Alan Barwick. Nearest the pin on hole 5 was Alan Barwick and on hole 16 Paul Singh. In a league of its own BENTLEY AND Maserati had experienced a double digit growth during 2012 and so it was no better a time to test a Maserati GranTurismo, as owned by pop star Britney Spears. Other owners include Manchester City star Mario Balotelli, who famously gave his a matt finish while Arsenal defender Andre Santos was arrested on suspicion of driving his dangerously following a 140mph police chase. That is a lesson to us all because the unique selling point of a Maserati is that it is a road going racing car at a pretty reasonable price (between £83,000 and a £111,000) when you consider the cost of a typical racing car. Any vehicle is a lethal weapon but the Maserati GTS is in a league of its own meaning that its pilot carries with them tremendous responsibility. The temptation to floor this beast (and that grille does literally make it look like a monster as you can see at testdrives.biz) at every opportunity is immense and therefore young owners such as the aforementioned need to be particularly careful when behind the wheel. “There’s little skill required in driving such a car,” says a longin-the-tooth motoring hack, eyeing the six-speed automatic gearbox. “You don’t even need to think about changing gear, which is why it appeals to mindless footballers…” That’s perhaps a little unfair and I detect a hint of jealousy as I show him round the pearlescent white GTS. The fact of the matter is that it is possible to drive it as a manual thanks to the paddle

shifts either side of the steering wheel.
