Hospital feels the heat VILLAJOYOSA HOSPITAL patients were literally melting over the weekend as the air conditioning systems failed for four days. by Jeanette Rice THE ONLY areas in the hospital that escaped the soaring temperatures were the critical departments of ER, ICU and the operating theatres which have a separate emergency system. Patients and their visitors were forced to use fans in a bid to try and keep cool as engineers worked frantically to repair the three refrigeration machines that supply the hospital which failed last Friday. The union which represents the hospital workers, CCOO, stated that the situation would not have occurred if an investment plan had been put into place to buy a new air conditioning system. The spokesperson said “the system has been working flat out because of the sustained temperatures and the current sys-
tem is old and insufficient with the small pores in the ducts failing”. Patients had windows and doors open all day to try and take advantage of any moving air with their relatives bring electric fans to them from home. Hospital staff were only able to offer showers and bed baths in an attempt to try and keep their patients cool. As temperatures on the wards exceeded 30C one patient, Sandra, who had just given birth said “we have newborn babies and no air conditioning yet in radiology there is, the nights have been unbearable”. Other patients complained that the situation was like “living in a third world country” as the engineers managed to get one of the three systems working fairly quickly but required new parts for the other two systems.
