Tapas & Pinchos week BENIDORM HOSTS its 4th Tapas and Pinchos competition - a week long event starting on Monday 31st March and finishing on Sunday 6th April. All the participating restaurants and bars will have a poster “Concurso Tapas y Pinchos” in the window so that you know which ones are taking part – many will be in and around Calle Santo Domingo, otherwise known as Tapas Alley. The idea is for people to sample a vast range of traditional as well as modern tapas for a fixed price then vote for your favorite. Technically pinchos are thin slices of bread with a variety of toppings whereas tapas are served, either hot or cold, in a terracotta dish and require a folk to eat it. The winning establishment receives a plaque, which will no doubt be prominently displayed for all to see.

Benidorm firmly on track as top tourist destination BENIDORM HOTELS recorded an average occupancy of 75.1% in the second half of February representing an increase of 5.1 points over the same period last year, the highest percentage since the crisis began in 2008. by Jan Gamm
More importantly, the statistics show an increasing and positive confidence in a major domestic market. An encouraging 205,000 overnight stays of tourists in Benidorm hotels throughout the second half of February equate to a prominent rise of 6%, according to data provided by hotel association Hosbec on Tuesday. The recovery heralds a turning point in the downward trend recorded in the harshest years of economic crisis. Recent unfortunate weather conditions in the UK throughout the winter augurs blockbuster forward bookings from British holidaymakers ahead of what is tipped to be the most successful summer season ever for Benidorm, the Mediterranean’s most popular vacation resort.
SICTED distinction award programme underway
35 BENIDORM tourism establishments took part in the first SICTED training sessions on Tuesday in preparation for earning SICTED hospitality and service distinctions. The aim of the project is to promote excellence in the quality of services and products offered in the resort.

Benidorm on fire! FALLAS ARE a traditional Valencian celebration in honour of St Joseph. The term “fallas” refers to both the celebration and the monuments created during this time. by Irena Bodnarec THE BIGGEST and best celebrations occur in Valencia, the birthplace but many towns in the Valencian community have their own parties. Las Fallas is a 5 day celebration marked in the province of Valencia every March (15th -19th), culminating in the grand climax on the night of the 19th. The true origins of the Fallas is unknown and there are many versions, depending on who you speak to but it is thought to originate from a Pagan ritual to celebrate the onset of Spring. What started as a feast day for St Joseph (patron saint of carpenters) is now a vast 5 day fiesta. The festival started in the Middle Ages during which the carpenters had to suspend wood planks for supporting their candles in Winter while at work, which at the beginning of Spring they burnt. This marked the end of dark Winter working days. The focus of the fiesta is the creation and destruction of the “ninots” which are HUGE paper-mache models. They cost tens of thousands of euros and take almost the entire year to construct by the various penya’s and groups. It is similar to the Rio carnival, as soon as one has finished they are already planning and making costumes for the following year! The biggest and probably best Fallas take place in Valencia, but all towns in
A typical falla
the province will have them. Each year Benidorm has 3 main ones but in Valencia there are hundreds - located at almost every crossroad in the city, it becomes a no-go zone for cars! Many of the models are several stories tall and need to be moved into position by crane. The themes are varied and satirical and reminiscent of the 80’s British comedy Spitting Image, where many of the models are caricatures poking fun of Spanish politicians and celebrities. The ninots, or models remain in place until the 19th, which this year falls on Wednesday and is known as “La Crema” - the burning and highlight of the fiesta. During the early evening men with axes chop out chunks around the base and stuff them with fireworks and nearer to the burning, will pour over
with lighter accelerant. They wrap strings of fire crackers around the models trailing it a safe distance away and this will be the starting point of the lighting. The Bomberos, or fire brigade are out in force on this night and kept very busy. The boys are all set with hoses in hand and wet down any stay sparks and embers as the spectators are in extremely close proximity. One thing you could guarantee - a risk assessment back in the UK would have outlawed the entire event immediately, but it´s amazing to watch! The childrens Fallas are burnt first - starting at 10pm then at midnight the main adult ones are set alight. But be warned - the heat coming off is really intense. As much as you’ll want to be at the front, once they set light you will be edging backwards quickly!
Fallas Calendar FOR THOSE that plan on joining in for the Benidorm Fallas the highlights of the programme are follows: SATURDAY
15th
16th 17th 18th 19th
The Fallas are erected into position - this is known as the “Planta”. There are 3 - at the Plaza de la Hispanidad (Plaza Triangular where the huge rubber tree is); Rincon de Loix - opposite Burger King and Calle Tomas Ortuno in the Old Town.
SUNDAY
At 7pm there is a parade of the fiesta queens followed by mass in the San Jaime church.
MONDAY The music band parades in the streets around all 3 Fallas starting at 10.30am in the Rincon.
TUESDAY
At 6pm there is the “Flower Offering to the Virgin of the Suffrage” going along the Avd Mediterraneo and ending at the Plaza de San Jaime.
WEDNESDAY
The main and final day. At 6pm there is a big parade of floats along the Avd Mediterraneo ending at the Plaza Triangular - by the Madeira Hotel. At 11pm it is the burning of the Childrens Fallas: 12 Midnight burning of the Falla in the Ricon: 12.30am burning of the Falla on the Plaza Triangular and lastly at 1am buring on Calle Tomas Ortuno. Wrap up warm if you plan to go and remember that the 19th is a public holiday here so most shops will be closed (don’t forget to do your shopping on Tuesday!)
* These times were correct at time of going to press but are subject to change at short notice.

El Cisne Rastro ONE OF the many delights of being in the Benidorm area at the weekend is the rastro at El Cisne – probably most similar to a flea market or car boot but without the cars! By Irena Bodnarec Things start getting really busy around late morning but apparently the real bargain hunters are there before 9am while the stall holders are already setting up between 7.30 and 8.00am. There is certainly something for everyone, with items ranging from rare antiques, clothing, a coin dealer, collectables, electrical items to general junk - you can easily spend an entire morning riffling through all the stalls. There is a real cross section of people too - from well dressed local Spanish to
casual short & t-shirt British and Dutch holiday makers, everyone effortlessly mingles side by side. Security men patrol the aisles regularly, but it´s no excuse to be lax about personal security. With so many people at the rastro pushing and shoving it is a pick pockets ideal scenario - so be on your guard! As you spend the morning browsing you can pop by to one of the bars located at the front and to the side of the rastro for a much needed drink and snack. There you can even sample a plate of
Some of the stalls
The entrance to El Cisne hides a world of offers
traditional Spanish paella with bread – a specialty every Thursday, when the rastro is also open. To add to the festive atmosphere there is even free entertainment laid on every weekend and many go just for that. On Sunday, from noon till 1pm there is the very popular and multi talented Pablo Bloom – dubbed the one man Benidorm jukebox! His love is 50’s music and he wows the audience with renditions of Jersey Boys, Beatles, Chuck Berry as well as current hits in the charts - his range is huge. Those in the audience sing along and even get up to dance as he throws out one toe tapping number after another. Located on the N332 – the main road out of Benidorm, it is very easy to find. The number 10 bus stops right outside (just watch when everyone else gets off) or if you are driving head in the direction of Alfaz/Altea and you will find a huge FREE car-park next door.

Mon
NEVER TO do things by half party-wise, the celebrations will start early in the heart of Benidorm. Not content with just celebrating on the actual day, it has now become a weekend long event with Brits arriving specially to take advantage of the good weather and cheap booze! Many of the bars make a great effort, decorating the outside with Irish bunting and
shamrock flags - it looks like a mini Ireland and many of the revelers dress up too. You will be able to soak up the atmosphere along Calle Gerona and surrounding streets, with the Irish bars such as The Shamrock and Scruffy Murphys in particular going all out on the entertainment front. Age is certainly no barrier to dress up and have fun in this party capital.

Something for the golfers… BENIDORM IS renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches but tucked away among the high rise skyscrapers is an amazing oasis of green and a golfers paradise.
Golfers paradise
The resort has a selection of courses on its doorstep, all easily accessible and within easy reach. Six months of the year are classified as high season; March through to May then September till November, and when green fees are obviously more expensive. July and August are low season as it is too hot – but as the saying goes, only mad dogs and Englishmen… You may think that golfing is the preserve of the rich – but you´d be surprised at how reasonable it is to play here in Benidorm. The Villaitana golf course, has 2 amazing greens to choose from – the ´Poniente´ Executive PAR 62 course and the ´Levante´ Championship PAR 72 course, which both
overlook the breathtaking Benidorm skyline. There is also the Sierra Cortina ´Pitch & Putt´ - a short 18 hole course ideal for beginners or those wanting a quick game and easily achieved in under 2 hours. The green fee here is 15€ - trolley and/or buggy rental is extra. As with golfing etiquette all around the world, a polo shirt is compulsory as are either tailored shorts or trousers for both ladies and gentlemen. Our mystery man on the street ENJOYS A sneaky look at the very popular MELIA HOTEL a quality 4* from a trusted brand
REGARDED AS one of the best hotels in Benidorm, the Melia certainly lives up to the name in terms of facilities on offer. The vast lagoon style pools and they are vast, are a probably one of the number one reasons for booking this smart hotel, together of course with the fact that the hotel is operated by one of the most recognised hotel brands. THE HOTEL A big modern hotel with stunning hanging gardens in one of the largest reception areas in Benidorm! A fantastic guest lounge, cafÊ bar and the hotel restaurant are reached from this area as are those fabulous pools and gardens. In summer guests can enjoy three additional bars including the poolside Palapa bar. THE ROOMS Offering 524 rooms including 30 deluxe and 6 junior suites over 23 floors. Rooms here are not the usual tourist type found in so many resort based hotels. Furnishings and in room facilities here are more a kin to a city business hotel. All standard rooms have balconies with deluxe rooms and suites offering the best pool and garden views, bigger terraces and much more space. Facilities include 32 LCD TV, wifi, mini-bar a full bathroom, furnished terrace and large room safe which will take a laptop. In the event you may feel peckish at 3am, rooms service is 24 hours.
THE FOOD Served buffet style in the large bright El Curt restaurant which also overlooks the pool. A massive breakfast is served until a rather civilised 10.30am with lunch until 3.30pm and evening meals until 10pm. There is of course plenty of choice, with show cooking (lots cooked to order) and different theme nights too. Above average quality as you would except from Melia. THE POOL Set amongst lavish tropical gardens the two lagoon pools are quite fantastic. Loads of sunbeds and secluded areas making it easy to find some me space! In winter there is a bigger than average heated pool which is on the same level as the gardens. Without doubt the outside spaces are a real asset to the hotel and immaculate too. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel is located in the Rincon de Loix a little over 600m from the main Levante beach with no hills along the way. A vast hotel with lots of space to relax both inside and outside. Loads of guests seemed to be regulars a good review in itself. Rooms are nicely kept with good housekeeping and offer very comfy beds. Tends to attract more couples over 40 rather than a young crowd and is not on the stag or hen circuit, gladly! The Melia is a known brand and this one delivers all you expect. Book this and over 400 Benidorm and Costa Blanca hotels by visiting realbenidorm.net

Venus takes on much in a busy month of planetary action. After soothing a warring Mars, Venus brings on actions with calming Aquarius and lucky Jupiter. This is a time to follow your dreams and to be sure of your innermost abilities as you show your versatility and determination in a positive and inspiring leap forward. Balanced by the energies of the Full Moon and inspired by Mercury in Pisces this month you seem to be making plans for the future as you sensitively deal with all aspects of what has held you back. Be decisive and sure that what you ask for is what you really want since, for once, there is no doubt you are to be suitably rewarded! Bowled over from the infinite energy of the midmonth Full Moon you are also making waves that show others that you are now putting the past behind you and taking a step in the right direction at long last. You have experienced both sides of the coin just lately but this has led to you showing a positive and resourceful stature. Sun energy has brought you ups and downs just lately, but whilst your inspiring planetary leader has interacted twice with lucky Jupiter and given wily Saturn and scheming Ceres a run for their money. You are closer than ever to making the big time, and just a little more concerted effort and you can finally cross the winning line.
Sudoku
Since Mercury Directs in the first few days of the month, your mood should be lifted and purposeful. Midmonth trysts see Mercury take on Saturn and Mars, but it is actions with the great timekeeper Ceres, just after, that shows you plainly that there are to be significant changes to your plans and that there is coming a higher calling! Ceres installs a discipline into your life as a challenge has been made, and you would be crazy not to take up the gauntlet. Time and motion has allowed you to slip back into past glories, but it is what you are now about to do that shows others what you are made of, and that, above all, you are not to be messed with anyway anytime. Both of your planetary rulers, Mars and Pluto are kept on their toes this month, which heralds a busy time. Mars is retrograde from the very first day, but serves to energise a cunning Pluto throughout a wonderful month ahead. It is significant that Mercury ends this eventful month in cahoots with Pluto in sextile on the 28th! Jupiter Directs at the end of the first week, dallying courteously with Venus just after. Love enters into your heart this month and it is a wonderful moment to behold when you realise that an acquaintance has become a good friend. Your inner energies are focused on someone special who desperately needs your tender love and care. Fearless and enterprising you may very well leave no stone unturned looking for the solution as to what went wrong. This month shows you that what happened was inevitable, and that also it happened for good reason which you are about to find out. Stop any self blame and instead plough energies into new and inspiring challenges.

Mercury is monitoring your progress with an eye to see that your creativity is acknowledged and that you are fully rewarded for a job done well, against all odds. Look to your opposing sign of Leo to see best a way forward, since you are not running away but you do need to move on to a better situation that acknowledges you and which benefits from all that positive energy that you have to give right now. Under the influence of Mercury channels of communication are now open to you, since much of what you have said of late seems to have fallen on deaf ears. You have a message to send and others should be ready to listen or should move on because they may not like what they hear, as you work with the truth. Let bygones be bygones but have your say since the truth now needs to be told to all.

PARC DE ELCHE
Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town: a lovely, shady park area with plenty of palm trees. Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.
FOR THOSE who like to discover a little local history whilst also keeping fit there is plenty to keep you occupied on a visit to Benidorm.
PEACOCK ISLAND
The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.
JUST A short Bus journey (No.3) from Park Elx (Bus Stop below Hotel Mar Blau) by the harbour will take you to the lovely bay of Cala de Finestrat, where high above the bay is a gem of walk up to the watchtower of Agulió on the peak of the hill. You cannot miss it! Part of the old coastal defences since the XVI century built to look out for invaders and latterly as part of a series of towers looking out for Smugglers avoiding the payment of taxes. The walk is easy to medium difficulty and is reached by taking the path behind the restaurant on the beach. The walk should take just 25 minutes from the beach. Once on the peak you can see almost a ¼ of the entire Land of Valencia toward Benidorm and Calpe in the north to Alicante and Villajoyosa in the south. This is one of the best kept secrets in the area with rarely another soul sharing the views and tranquillity with you. The phrase “Breath Taking” often misused by holiday brochures really does seem apt here, the scenery and views truly are breath taking.
BALCON DEL MEDITERRANEO
Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

View from ‘the hill’
THE AREA often referred to as The Rincon is part of what is deemed the ‘New Town’, probably the most popular location with British holidaymakers. IT IS certainly the life and soul of the resort and where you will find all the nightlife. The vast, sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants which are lively to say the least. You will definitely find all your home comforts here such as all day British breakfasts, UK television in most bars and fantastic value food and drink. During the day you are spoilt for choice of activities. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest waterpark in Spain and Mundomar, a marine animal park, both at the far end and next door to each other. For the adventurous there is the cable water ski which is found at the beginning of the Levante beach – great for adrenalin junkies. One of the most breath taking views to be had of resort must be from the top of the Sierra Helada, often referred to as ‘The Hill’. Many holidaymakers trek up to the top, where you will find a Benidorm landmark: The Cross… just be aware
that it’s a good 45-minute trek to the top! Terra Mitica theme park is a great day trip with its exciting rides and shows, suitable for the entire family and not far away you will find Wildlife Park Terra Natura and beside it Aqua Natura, a smaller waterpark more suited for younger children. For golfers, the magnificent Villaitana golf course offers two 18-hole courses with a view of the Benidorm skyline. Every Saturday night and held all year round is The Circus. Starting at 6pm and located behind Benidorm Palace, you will be captivated for over two hours (children are not compulsory to attend!) And for a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace – probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm and you are guaranteed a night to remember with its magnificent show. The Rincon is where you will find all the

cabaret bars and nightclubs, open well into the early hours. With the bars brimming over every night you will be spoilt for choice as to where to head. Most of the bars offer free entertainment and you can hear and watch a huge variety of very talented people ranging from singers, tribute groups and comedians catering to all tastes. And last but not least, the legend - Sticky Vicky!
The Old Town
THE OLD Town is located between the Levante and Poniente beaches, a far cry from the ‘British Square’ in the Rincon, that people associate with Benidorm. This area is like stepping back in time – full of narrow, cobbled streets adorned with white washed houses and an abundance of boutiques, bars and restaurants. Head toward the blue-domed church and at the top you will arrive at the lookout point, or Mirador as the locals would say. The climb up to the top is certainly worth it for the wonderful view of both bays. On your way back down, stop off at the famous Tapas Alley – which as the name suggests is a street full of tapas bars. If you are fed up with pie and chips and fancy a real taste of Spain, this is where you should go. The Old Town is also where you will find the Gay quarter – hugely popular for an alternative night out. A visit to the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kaffe Klee are a must if you appreciate drag humour and the many gay bars make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Mal Pas beach is located in the Old Town and it is from this harbour that you can catch a boat to both Tabarca Island and Calpe, great days out.
STARTING AT Parc del Elche in the Old Town, generally referred to as Dove Park due to the hundreds of white doves, is Poniente beach, which runs for more than 3km and finishes at La Cala. The promenade, which runs along the entire length of the beach, won an architectural award for its innovative multi-coloured wave design and is certainly worth seeing. This side of Benidorm is much quieter, so great if you just want to relax and unwind. At the far end of Poniente you will find La Cala – which technically belongs to the town of Finestrat but everyone refers to it as Benidorm. The skyline is dominated by two buildings – the Gran Hotel Bali and the newly constructed ‘Intempo’ twin towers, with its gold clad frontage, rumoured to be the tallest residential building in Europe. Away from the beach you will find the La Marina indoor shopping centre – a great way to while away a few hours to enjoy some retail therapy whilst on the top floor there is a 10-pin bowling alley to keep the men and kids amused. If you fancy a bit of a thrill head to Karting Finestrat – located behind the shopping centre on the mountain side with beautiful views over Benidorm.

Reduce travel time within the city and increase the likelihood of punctual arrival Remove the stress connected with motorised traffic WHAT IS BICIDORM NOT? For bicycle tours in and around Benidorm or weekend jaunts with friends there are plenty of stores dedicated to
bicycle rental in the city.

You pass the mesh covered mountain sides where they grow on route to the Fonts DÁlgar waterfalls, a natural beauty spot and great day out. Just a little further up are the Botanical Cactus Gardens where you will find over 650 species of cacti. The town is home to the famous Valor chocolate factory , which offers tours and tastings – a must for chocolate lovers. Finestrat has a beautiful coved sandy beach – called La Cala and away from the coast the large indoor shopping centre, La Marina with plenty of outlets to keep you busy. ONE OF The things that remain unchanged in Spain are the weekly street markets. If you are a bargain hunter then you have certainly come to the right place as every day is market day.
Head towards the Hotel Pueblo and give yourself plenty of time if you want to see everything! There is also a market in the Old Town, located just behind the tram station.
The bus service to Villa Joyosa is rather limited but it is worth visiting this beautiful town. Alternatively, El Cisne is a very popular flea market if you like to rummage and the bus stops right outside.
Alfaz has a great fruit and veg section at the far end and conveniently, the trusty number 10 will drop you off right at the start of the market. La Cala market is located not far from the Carrefour hypermarket in Finestrat and you can catch the number 2 bus from the centre of Benidorm to get there.
LA CALA & EL CISNE La Cala market is next to the beach. El Cisne rastro is a flea market and has free live music to keep you entertained whilst you enjoy a drink and snack at the bar.
BENIDORM, LA CALA, EL CISNE & ALBIR And also car boot type markets in La Nucia and Polop… you are really spoilt for choice on Sunday!
THERE ARE a great deal of street markets on the Costa Blanca, but one of the biggest has to be Benidorm which is held twice a week due to its popularity - every Wednesday and Sunday in the Rincon de Loix and another one by the tram station in the Old Town. You will find everything there - from fruit and veg to clothes, bags, nik naks, jewellery, counterfeit designer goods .... but the golden rule is barter - especially with the “look alike products”! Whatever the price quoted knock them down by half then start from there. Don’t be shy - haggling is half the fun. Other street markets held in towns surrounding Benidorm you may wish to visit during your stay include the following, most of which are easily got to
on the number 10 bus from the centre of Benidorm. INDOOR MARKET In addition to the weekly street markets don´t forget that the Indoor Market in the Rincon de Loix is also open every day except Sunday until 6pm - Saturday until 3pm. You will find plenty of independent shops, stalls, money exchange bureaus and beauty salons where you can go and get thoroughly pampered, so you don´t have to worry about the weather outside – if it´s raining you can still shop without getting wet. The majority are British owned and ran so no language barriers either! There are 3 separate entrances and each is wheelchair/ mobility scooter friendly, with specially installed ramps.
Av.Ametlla Del Mar 9, Ed.Mercaloix Benidorm, The Indoor Market is open from: 8am till 6pm Mon – Friday, 8am till 3pm Saturday.

o Say Hell Duckie!
Our Quacking reporter takes a flying visit to Cala Ti Ximo.
Shop ‘til you drop OLD TOWN The Old Town is a great place to start. Calle Gambo, the pedestrianised street that begins at the Plaza Triangular, where the huge rubber tree is, has a great selection of popular boutiques such as Masimo Dutti – a must for fashion-savvy customers, and Zara, which is now everyone’s favourite High Street fashion hit: even the Duchess of Cambridge and Coleen Rooney want to be seen in this leading Spanish fashion brand. The prices tend to work out cheaper here in Spain even taking into account the exchange rate, so it is certainly worth a visit. One well-known English name here and one you will be familiar with is Specsavers - the UK’s most popular opticians, run by Phillip, a British ex-pat. Paseo de la Carretera is another must-do street and will take you all the way to Elche Park.
INDOOR MARKET The Indoor Market in the Rincon de Loix offers a huge variety of independent shops and beauty salons. Don’t bother bringing heavy toiletries with you, pop along to Super Drogeria where you can purchase all the UK High Street brands with which you are familiar.
LA MARINA
THIS MONTH Duckie our intrepid explorer took a Sunday morning waddle high above and over the cliffs at the far end of the Playa Levante to the beautiful little cove that is Cala del Ti Ximo. A bit of a steep climb, but well worth the effort especially if you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the very busy Levante beach. Taking the road left by café Casbah at the very far end of Avenida Madrid opposite the Cable Ski. Head toward the Benikaktus Hotel which will take you on a 6km walk up and away from Benidorm into unspoilt rugged cliffs where you will see few cars, not many people out of season and even fewer Ducks (usually). Cala del Ti Ximo is well sign posted along the way with plenty of places to stop and take photos of the views along the coast as far as Alicante. Generally the shore is inaccessible along this stretch of coast due to the
steep and dangerous cliffs. However, between Punta de La Escaleta and Punta Pinet you will find three rocky coves the middle one being Xi Timo, also the only one you can access by road. You will even find sunbeds to hire (summer only) and a superb rocky creek with safe swimming perfect for snorkelling due to the shallow water and rocky seabed. Fancy an all over tan? No problem, you may get your kit off here too! If you are still feeling adventurous you can follow the old road further along the coast to the last little cove of Punta de la Escaleta and enjoy the amazing views and watch the sun go down before heading back to Benidorm for a nap before dinner. See more of Duckie´s adventures on facebook search “RTN Duckie” or see www.facebook.com/duckiertn then click like.
Tea Dance in Benidorm FOR THOSE of you that hark back to the old times and fancy some old fashioned waltzing or a quick step, you´ll be delighted to know that you can do so right here in the Rincon de Loix. Head to the “Cafeteria Roman”- located next to the Hotel Brisa and opposite McDonalds at the end of the Levante beach. Every day between 5-9pm you will find a live band playing and a room packed full of like minded people – it´s an absolute delight to watch. Better still, there is no charge – just the cost of your drinks and any snacks you may wish to order. It is a very popular afternoon activity, so dust down those dancing shoes and head down to the Cafeteria Roman and give it a go!

Known as ‘Centro Comercial La Marina’, it has shops and restaurants and even an entertainment complex on the top floor. Horror Sisters are a must FOR THOSE that enjoy a good drag show the Horror Sisters, exclusive to Klee Kafee in the Old Town certainly shouldn´t be missed.
By Irena Bodnarec NO VISIT to Benidorm would be complete without a visit to see the outrageously funny pair. They have been pulling in the crowds for the last 20 years – and look no nearer to slowing down either! The boys, Alan and Mike have certainly notched up a few records – they have been life partners for over 50 years and were the very first British couple to get married at Benidorm Town Hall when Gay marriage was legalized here. This year will mark 40 years of living in Spain for them both – Alan is originally from Leeds and Mike from Wolverhampton, but neither would swap Benidorm for anywhere else in the world. The pair arrived in Spain in May 1974 to a very different country which it is now – Franco was in power and things were not easy for same sex couples. Gay bars were often raided but thankfully it is a different and more tolerant world now. They originally planned to sit back, relax and enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle – but quickly got bored and set to work, Mike back to hairdressing and Alan in the tourism sector. The Horror Sisters were born in the early 1990´s when they made their debut at a bar called Stage Door, opened by two young Brits from Birmingham. The pair performed a few ad hoc shows over the course of the year, which went down so well that they ended up putting together a show and taking it around the bars and hotels in Benidorm for a number of years. Then in 2004 everything was to change as Dutch couple Paula and Monique asked them to do a regular Sunday afternoon show at their recently opened bar – Klee Kafee. The show was greeted with rapturous applause every time they took to the stage and they quickly became exclusive to what is often referred to as KK, 3 nights a week. Twenty years on they are still one of the most popular comedy drag shows on the Costa Blanca and the pair derive as much pleasure from entertaining the crowds now as they did back then. They have seen the Show Bar through three different owners over their time and currently perform twice a week, every Sunday and Wednesday night. They would like to thank all the thousands of people who have supported them over the years and hope that they will continue to do Alan and Mike so for many more.
The Horror Sisters, exclusive to Klee Kafee
Sheila Blige at Kafee Klee! SHEILA BLIGE was born in Shrewsbury, UK, named Martyn at birth (he soon realised that was a mistake!) Moving to Blackpool with his partner, at 23 Martyn became Sheila and opened two hairdressing salons, styling names like Joe Longthorn, Dana, Roy Walker and Danny La Rue… 1993 saw a move to Benidorm where they opened The Terrace Bar in Egg & Bacon Alley, where they remained for five years – and where Sheila Blige was well and truly born, becoming an all-time customer favourite. The bar was reluctantly left behind to seek the dizzy heights of fame and fortune on the cabaret circuit. And at the same time Sheila and partner also opening another hair dressing salon called M&Ms. BATTLING ON Sheila continued to perform at Benidorm’s cabaret bars over the next 16 years. Sadly, in 2006 Sheila’s partner of 20 years passed away after losing his battle with cancer. Ever the old battle axe, Sheila picked herself up, dusted off her frocks and battled on. She has since met someone new, the lovely Paul (aka Bunny), and in 2012 they eloped to Gretna Green! Back in Benidorm, Sheila had another wedding at Klee Kafee, the ceremony performed by the one and only Miss Jordan Rivers, captured and put on to DVD and the proceeds of 1,000€ generously donated to The Christie Cancer Research Unit in Manchester. SHEILA THE STAR Over the years Sheila has entertained delighted audiences in Kafee Klee; Bar La Rue’s; Rich Bitch; Sandra’s, Gigolos; Tommy’s; Valentines and loads more. She has also been seen on TV’s Escape to the Sun; Benidorm Unpacked and in the ITV series Benidorm as bridesmaid at Madge and Mel’s wedding. She also took a speaking part in the manhole scene. These days Sheila is still very much a star on the Benidorm circuit. You can catch her and her everchanging show every Monday & Thursday from 10.15pm at Klee Kafee in the old town.

Magnificent opening night at
Mardi Gras
MONDAY 3rd March was the grand opening of the coolest and hippest place in town – the Mardi Gras Showbar in the Old Town.
A SHOW stopping flame thrower greeted guests as they arrived and the magnificent “Austin Powers” worked the crowds, in full character with literally everyone wanting a picture taken with him. Doors officially opened at 9pm – but the place was already packed by then and continually saw more and more people arriving throughout the course of the evening. Guests were served champagne on arrival and an extensive selection of finger foods was served on platters for all to enjoy. International drag DJ Miss Orry started the party and a host of top entertainers kept the party mood in full swing until well into the early hours. Hostess Soraya Vivian and Manager Kevin Raywood were astounded and delighted with the turnout and many local bar owners came to show their support too. The opening night was also filmed by a local television company such is the hype of this exclusive hideaway. Open to all, it offers a unique late night experience with an electric atmosphere in the heart of the Old Town – entry is free and the club opens from 10pm until 4am 7 nights per week.

Entertainer of the month
Jenny Renn ONE LADY who stands out on the Benidorm entertainment circuit is Jenny Renn – in the main because she is a female comedienne, which is rather unusual in the profession. Originally from Liverpool, she has been keeping the masses laughing here for over 15 years. She has always been in show business and worked on the cruise lines when she was younger. One of her first jobs on arriving here was working alongside Miss Jordan Rivers at the Rich Bitch Show Bar in the Old Town, but now you more likely to catch her at one of the big hotels – she performs at Levante Club, Ambassador and Magic Rock regularly. Jenny is also heavily involved with many local charities and fundraising events, in particular MABS, a Cancer Support Group. Every Wednesday morning she volunteers at the newly opened drop in centre in La Cala, helping to bring a smile to the faces of those affected, and if only temporary, makes them laugh and forget their illness.

60’s revival BENIDORM PALACE will come alive with the sound of the 60´s on Sunday 23rd March when the iconic Merseybeat group ´The Swinging Blue Jeans´ take to the stage for a special one night only performance.
The stage of Benidorm Palace has seen some legendary Sixties groups over the last year and this is another triumph for them. You will be taken back in time as you hear classics such as ´Hippy Hippy Shake´, ´Good Golly Miss Molly´ and ´You´re No Good´ being belted out. As if that wasn´t enough for one night, the evening is a double billed extravaganza, with the unforgettable comedian Stan ¨The Fokker´ Boardman entertaining the audience with his gags and funny stories. The Liverpudlian comic rose to prominence when he was banned from the BBC for 3 years after telling a joke about the German Focke-Wulf plane in the mid 1980´s – a hero to many at the time. It will be an incredible night, with a rare opportunity to see two British greats in one show. Tickets cost 25€ and are now available from the Palace box office – doors open at 7pm on the night and the show starts at 9pm, giving you time to relax, enjoy a drink or special gala night meal and soak up the atmosphere.

restaurant review
Deja Vu
THE DEJA Vu is a small intimate restaurant nestled just off the popular walking street in the Old Town, at the Dove Park end – a Venetician mask shop is on the corner of the street. THE INTERIOR is reminiscent of the Belle Epoque era – formal but rich and colourful with deep red walls and ornate mirrors and paintings adorning the walls. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere make it an ideal choice to taste some first class cuisine, which is all freshly prepared to order. The 22 seater restaurant is open Monday to Saturday from 6pm and on Sunday´s from 1pm. The legendary 4 course Sunday lunch menu, which includes half a bottle of wine per person is an unbelievable 9.50€. You are offered a full choice of roasts - beef, pork, lamb (1€ supplement) and chicken in
addition to soup, starter and dessert. You really need to book if you want to be sure of sampling this delicious feast on a Sunday afternoon as many regulars re-book for the following week. During the week Deja Vu offer a 3 course early bird menu with half a bottle of wine for 9.50€, which is available until 7pm. The regular 4 course set menu offers an extensive selection to choose from and is phenomenal value at 12.95€, which again includes half a bottle of quality wine per person. For those not wanting a set meal they also have a substantial a la carte menu. The restaurant makes an ideal venue for private parties and celebrations – contact Elaine on 672 532 592 to discuss your requirements. Please note that they do not accept any credit cards – cash only. If you are after a very good meal at a decent price then head to Deja Vu – you won´t be disappointed. There is also another Deja Vu restaurant in Alfaz del Pi – about half way down on the main road. They open from 9am daily for breakfast and also offer snacks throughout the day in addition to lunch and evening meals. The fish and chips, a specialty every Friday lunchtime, has gained something of a cult status locally and attracts visitors from miles around. There is also additional seating on the sunny outside terrace, especially suitable for smokers.
Coffee lovers guide... HOLIDAYMAKERS OR even those fortunate enough to live in beautiful Benidorm may be baffled as to the vast choice and selections of coffee available at bars and cafes. THE SPANISH drink a lot of coffee but not much tea - this is especially evident if you ever go into an electrical store to purchase an electric kettle. There will be row upon row of coffee machines but probably a choice of two kettles. Still, as the saying goes, when in Rome... Here are the most common choices of coffee: Cafe Solo - Equivalent to an Espresso: a small, very strong black coffee Cafe con Leche - Half cafe solo and half hot milk Cafe Bombon - A small glass containing condensed milk with cafe solo: very sweet! Cafe Americano - Large black coffee Cafe Cortado - Cafe solo with a drop of milk Cafe con Hielo - Pronounced ‘yello’ and mostly drunk in the Summer time, this is cold, iced coffee. You will be served a normal coffee and be bought a separate glass with ice - then you pour the coffee over it Cafe Sombra - (or Cafe Manchado) is mostly milk with a few drops of coffee Cafe Carajillo - A cafe solo served with a shot of brandy... obviously a very popular choice! You will witness most builders having one for breakfast and the price is far cheaper than a Starbucks frothy milk concoction in the UK! If you want de-caffeinated then ask for ‘descafeinado’ - most places will have it. So off you go and enjoy with a slice of cake!
